Set in the rugged hills of central Sicily's Caltanissetta province, Lamoresca is the home and passion project of Filippo Rizzo, whose organically farmed vineyards sit on ancient clay-limestone soils at around 450 metres altitude. The wines capture the raw, untamed beauty of inland Sicily, balancing generosity with freshness and a striking sense of place. Rizzo's thoughtful, low-intervention approach has made Lamoresca one of the island's most characterful and expressive small estates.
A blend of 70% Nero d’Avola, 25% Frappato and 5% Moscato, the 2024 Rosato continues to bridge the gap between serious structure and easy drinkability. The mix of red and white grapes brings both depth and lift; the Nero d’Avola providing grip and savour, Frappato lending bright, red-fruited energy, and Moscato adding a gentle aromatic twist. It's a vivid and textural rosato that perfectly captures Lamoresca's earthy, vibrant personality.

Terrifically concentrated and texturally voluminous yet tense and dry with an exceptionally long zesty finish.
From a single vineyard planted in 1975. Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, citrus and orange rind flood the nostrils followed by some chalky talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. The mouth watering palate is bristling with lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which are both terrifically concentrated and texturally voluminous. Chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral elements express themselves across the back half. Tense and dry it has a spine of crisp, laser edged acidity which leans into the long zesty finish that shows exceptional drive.

The 2025 Block 2 Riesling is softer and plusher than the Block 1 Riesling tasted next to it, and this shows in lime flesh, brine, green apple and crushed rocks. The Rieslings of the Great Southern carry the mineral drive of those from Eden Valley and, in some cases, the flesh of Clare, which we see here. This region in the southwest of Western Australia is quite unique in Australia in that it is incredibly remote, almost harsh in its landscape, vast and diverse, given its size. The soils around the Mt. Barker area are largely composed of ironstone gravel soils and lateritic gravelly sandy loams derived from granite and gneissic bedrocks. These soils are particularly well-suited to Shiraz and Riesling, which we can see here. This is a magnificent wine, and while I often prefer the Block 1 over the Block 2, it is not so this year. Is there a touch of residual here? If so, I like it. The vineyard block was planted in 1975. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2046.

Although now a single malt with its own brand, the majority of the whisky made at Balblair still goes towards the Blended Scotch industry. Clear worts, long fermentation in wooden washbacks, and distillation in small, stumpy stills produces a richly fruity new make character alongside a sulphury/meaty note. The outturn for this indie release was 350 bottles from a first-fill bourbon barrel. The label features a character from Boutique-y's original Balblair label that took inspiration from the film 'The Angel's Share', which was shot at the distillery. 45.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Overall, a very nice whisky. Definitely on the ripe, fruity side and very pleasing. This one has a fruit basket from the garden, with the fruit already fallen from the tree and the bees feasting on it. You won't find much more, but it's perfectly adequate and enriches my whisky heaven greatly. A few percent more would suit it well. The nose is its great strength. Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Fruity, tropical notes of banana bread, foam banana sweeties, vanilla custard, Tarte Tatin. Palate: Sweet, creamy malt, white chocolate buttons, vanilla cream and sweet cinnamon with a touch of green banana beneath. Finish: Creamy vanilla and soft, sweet fruits linger, with a touch of herbaceous barley and a pinch of peppercorn heat.

Blended malts from Campbeltown are trending. The style and quality of the distillates means they're invariably very tasty drams (Springbank's own Campbeltown Loch is a case in point). Adorned with the ominous spectacle of a meteor strike on its label, this edition was bottled for the End of the World series by the reputable indie, That Boutique-y Whisky Company. 454 bottles were drawn from a first-fill bourbon barrel at 52.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The first nose is a smooth pleasant bourbon. More like Lowland than Campbelltown. Grass, hay, lemon, a little lime honey. The more one breathes, the more alcohol spices. Breathing in a bit of cork + cellar dampness + oak. The taste is sweet, very drinkable hay-grass, The finish is medium - short. It's surprising for this strength. Although there is wax in the taste on the back of the tongue, rounded by oak. Quite a nice blend, but definitely not Campbelltown style. - whiskybase.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Crisp apple and biscuity malt cushion soft waves of oily, coastal smoke. Preserved lemon and black pepper follow, with hints of floral garden herbs. Palate: Big rich layers of roasted barley and toasted oats join cider apples and subtly tarry smoke. Finish: Charred oak, barky cinnamon, a touch of clove, stewed tea, and dried herbs.

Other reviews... Taste is bready, salty and a bit hot (but not annoyingly so), with gentle subtle notes of salty lime. Salted crust sourdough. That quite literal barley huskiness reminds me of The Glenlivet. Faint orangey note. Just hinting at starting to pick up some complexity. It’s a decent whisky. A couple more years and some good casks and we’d have a solid Speyside whisky on our hands. Very promising. - whiskybase.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Roasted malt, soft stone fruits, and overripe orchard fruits open the way for trickles of honey, lemon and lime marmalade, and peppercorns. Palate: The zesty citrus from the nose carries through, joined by prunes, salted papaya, and toasted coconut, with waves of creamy oaken vanilla throughout. Finish: Toasted oak, vanilla, a smidge of dried chilli flake heat.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Ripe pear, Jonathan apple and honeysuckle aromas flood the nostrils followed by hints of musk, Turkish delight and ginger. Rich, luscious pear, red apple and honeysuckle flavours carry a viscous feel across the palate. Subtle musk, Turkish delight and spice elements lie underneath. Off dry it has a lick of brisk acidity to freshen things up. Finishes long, exotic and juicy.

A flinty number with struck stone at the forefront. Poire William pear, grappa and pickled ginger. There is character and a strong sense of palate value here, with swirls of candied lemon, pomelo and pith. Some earthy oyster mushroom and white pepper. Plenty to ponder on. Ben Riggs sourced the fruit for this excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Coonawarra’s top growers - Michael Wetherall’s, Wetherall Estate. From two premium vineyards on the estate that are a combination of terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the sites are located at the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks that deliver lower yields but excellent concentration. Picked on different days and from different blocks to allow for optimum ripening and multiple blending options, parcels of fruit for this Cabernet were separately fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel to complete fermentation in a 30% new French and 5% American oak combination.
A beautifully balanced Coonawarra Cabernet that’s deeply concentrated and amply fleshed yet wonderfully refined.
Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Sailing out of the glass with plenty of intensity are enticing blackcurrant, mulberry and choc mint aromas which intermingle with vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry fruits caress the mid weighted palate with ample flesh and concentration. Lending further interest are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf. Beautifully balanced and structured it has fine grained tannins and a finish that’s long and deep yet refined.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

A classic regional statement here, again sourcing the variety from outside Riggs’s home base – and unsurprisingly Coonawarra, showcasing its best-known features. Starts with a fragrant crush of black berries, bay leaf and mint providing their herbal aromatics, before easing into the palate with a certain grace and elegance, juicy, superfine tannin feels with just a delicate grab to finish, oak supportive and balanced – impressive given a decent amount is new French. In the American Oak Second Fill range, Sullivans Cove offer whiskies of maturity and finesse, drawn from casks seasoned by earlier spirit. Decades of slow ageing in these gentler barrels creates a delicate balance between vibrant fruit and malt character, soft vanilla, and mellow oak spice. In this example the nose needs coaxing to release a fruity aspect, in particular, dried pears, perfectly integrated with the oaky vanillas. The crisp, warming delivery shows a bit of that pickled ginger note that characterised early bottlings, but it's offset by a soft orchard fruitiness, almost like a young Calvados. The finish is subtle, medium-long, with gentle spices. Reveals the distillery's elegant side. 15ml sample.

TD0101 was filled into a cask in May 2006 and bottled in June 2023 at 47.5% Alc./Vol. 384 bottles produced.

While the ABV varies from cask to cask—typically falling between 47% and 50%—all expressions are non-chill filtered and free from added colour. As one of the foundational expressions in the Sullivans Cove core range, the American Oak Single Cask highlights the purity of distillation and the consistency of house character when matured in a controlled, familiar cask type, offering notes of vanilla, stone fruit and soft oak spice.

The whiskey was aged 11 years and 5 months before bottling at 62.1% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... fresher than its years...Quite waxy in part with tannins building almost surreptitously . The sweetened vanillas are pretty full on; light coffee/mocha trace; though that coffee is a bit heavy on the high roast bitternesss late on. Named after the company’s 1100-acre farm that surrounds the distillery, Star Hill Farm marks a shift in focus for the brand, being Maker’s first ever wheat whiskey, composed of 51% Soft Red Winter Wheat, 27% Malted Soft Red Winter Wheat and 22% Malted Barley. Zero corn is used. There's no age statement, however the label indicates it was distilled around 7-8 years ago, so expect something within that range. It's also high-proof and priced as an artisan product. Eric Hasman at breakingbourbon.com got a chance to taste the new premium release, summing up his thoughts as follows: "While it shares some similarities with the standard Maker’s Mark Bourbon, it is also refreshingly adventurous and contemporary... The majority of the sip is an invigorating change of pace, offering robust flavors, but using so much wheat in its mashbill has its drawbacks. That is evident in the whiskey’s finish, which features much more astringent oak than desired despite including so much malted wheat grain in its mashbill. Though it hampers what is otherwise a great pour, it’s not detrimental to the point of derailing the whole sip." 57.4% Alc./Vol.

There’s a bitter, tannic side to the pour that works in tandem with the sweetness to spectacular effect at times but at other moments takes a bit too much focus off the sweet, rich notes. The tannic profile adds some complexity; I just wish it were dialed down a notch or two — minor complaint about an altogether spectacular whiskey. At the time of writing, this is the oldest Australian spirit ever released, the majority distilled between 1970 and 1972 from Doradillo, Pedro Ximenez, Palomino and sultana grapes. Aromatics match the age statement; profound and superbly integrated, laden with rancio, buttered date cake, traces of old muscat, fig paste and fruit'n'nut dark chocolate with no loss of intensity after ample air contact. At five decades, the spirit warmth remains surprisingly present; It's brandy, no question, yet like its 30-year-old sibling, the profile draws comparison with high-end sherried single malt - it could be a single cask Glendronach or Macallan, for example, out of PX - especially at the finish where sticky date is more salient, checked by hints of orange zest. Pulsing persistence confirms this is seriously old material, and the complex fruit and nut interplay has to compete with some venerable oak. Sweet spices slowly retreat, leaving a glaze of rancio and ancient fortified wine through the aftertaste. Exceptional, and a brandy for lovers of single malt or Armagnac, more so than Cognac. 46% Alc./Vol. 50ml sample.
Other reviews... The mahogany colour indicates plenty of oak, which pays off on the nose – this is far woodier than the younger releases. Forest floor and an attic full of antique furniture creep out of the glass, and perhaps monsters lurk here. Please don't approach unless you like oak. But there’s Cherry Ripe, too, and that St Agnes creaminess I love. On the palate, it turns out the monster wants to hug you. Sure, it smells of sandalwood and leaf litter, but it’s a soft hug nonetheless, and the tannin on the finish is incredibly creamy, like an excellent cup of black tea rather than a dusty old bit of wood. Notes from the producers... The mahogany colour hints at the flavour in the glass. It smells of decades old tawny, Persian dates, marmalade and snow-white pebbles. It smells of old oiled cricket bats, rocky road chocolate and rose water. It fans out like a peacock’s tail on the palate. Viscous and luscious, bitter candied orange and caramelised apricot. It’s like inhaling the Barrel Halls, as the nutty rancio characters emerge and it just doesn’t stop, as hints of leather, cardamon, prunes and spice-rack linger. There’s light and shade, bright corners and dark corners. It’s hard not to get carried away when tasting an aged spirit with this level of depth and heritage. St.Agnes debuted this line several years ago, marking their first single cask release in over a century. Distilled from a Doradillo base wine, the bouquet is decadent, thick with oaky vanillas, cafe cremes, salted caramel chocolate, sticky date pudding and Rare Port, all sprinkled with cinnamon. At natural strength, it fulfils expectations; the flavour drive is impressive, the profile repeating the promise of the nose with an initial burst of juicy spiced-raisins, dried figs and apricots, tempered by tingling acidity and sweet oak. The tannins are fine-grained, the alcohol warms the heart and the overall balance near perfect. It's the beast of the collection, and arguably the most 'brandy-like', but the similarities to cask strength sherried single malts are also undeniable. Malt lovers take note! 50.5% Alc./Vol. 1995 distillation tasted.
Other reviews... At 55% alcohol, the Centenary Reserve has a lot more punch than St Agnes’ other brandies. Still, they’ve chosen less active casks here as the orange peel sweetness is far more apparent than oak on the nose, which is super cool for a spirit so old, especially when so many Aussie spirits are over-oaked at a 10th of this age. Whisky makers take note! The alcohol does present a bit of a barrier to nuance on the nose, but there’s still toasted almond and mint ice cream to be found. The entry on the palate is incredible, with big, warm, marmalade sweetness. Where the high alcohol hides some things on the nose, it explodes them across the tongue. This is my favourite palate of any St Agnes I’ve tried. The finish is still gentle with that hallmark St Agnes creaminess, and the fact that they can bottle at 55% without any burn is awe-inspiring. Notes from the producers... , it’s instantly floral and fruity, with a bright freshness that’s hard to believe considering the age. Highly concentrated and fragrant, with poached pear, dried fig and crushed mint leaves. Delicious as it progresses, creamy and moreish, with a slightly leathery, linseed character. Minimal wood extraction allowing the distillate to shine. As complex and refined as Australian brandy gets, and what an invocation of the doradillo grape where it all started in 1925.

Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first vineyards planted in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to shiraz - the great tradition of McLaren Vale - and has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.
Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Intense dark cherry and ripe red currant aromas jump out of the glass followed by some dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco notes. Juicy red currant and ripe cherry fruits flood the mid weighted palate overlaying a red liquorice, dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco back drop. Excellent fruit intensity and flesh with slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity. Long, generously fruited, spice laden finish.

'The Irishman' is a brand from the same company behind the award winning 'Writer's Tears' Irish whiskeys. This is a triple-distilled expression aged in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks for a minimum of ten years. An attractive spicy fruit-cake integration into what is otherwise, a typical pot still profile. Air contact draws out a spirity, brittle edge to the malt. Third pass finds the intensity drop, revealing light orchard fruits, vanilla cream biscuits and slight caramel. Light-weighted, but the oils add body to what is a distinctive Irish: Sherried-vanilla meets a chocolate box of fruity cocoa in the aftertaste. Quaffable straight, but adding ice makes a noticeable difference to the texture. 40% Alc./Vol. [Batch 1916/2016]
Other reviews... [Batch 1703/2013] The Walsh Family releases 6,000 bottles in every small batch of their single malt. Each bottling is a combination of triple distilled whiskey matured in oloroso sherry and bourbon casks. The nose is bright with vanilla icing, butterscotch, and dried peach. The taste is quite active, with honey, cinnamon, gingerbread, ground almond, and dark chocolate. At the time of writing, this is the oldest Glenfarclas ever released.
Distilled on 20 November 1953, the 70-Year-Old marks a pinnacle in Glenfarclas's legacy, embodying over seven decades of meticulous expertise. It was fully matured in the distillery's traditional dunnage warehouses in a single 1st Fill Sherry Butt. The original contents equated to approximately 500 litres. Of what was left, 262 bottles were filled in June 2025 at a natural strength of 42.9% Alc./Vol., and just 15 of those were allocated to Australia.
It's very rare for any distillery to be able to hold onto stocks for a period of 70 years. Most often distilleries will sell their whisky at a much younger age, but being one of the last family owned and managed distilleries in Scotland, Glenfarclas maintain the option of keeping casks for a longer, then releasing them when the time is right. Of course, it doesn't mean that you can just sit and wait 70 years and you'll have an amazing whisky. Casks will mature at different rates, so for any older casks you must monitor them for alcohol strength, aroma, character and flavour profiles. Needless to say, Glenfarclas are very proud to be able to offer their oldest ever product to date.
Notes from the producers... Colour - Polished dark teak. Aroma - Stewed fruits and traditional Scottish dumpling. Flavour - Dark chocolate laced with sherry-soaked dried fruits gives way to a refreshingly spicy tingle on the palate leading to a bold thread of rich, roasted coffee. Finish - Delicate peat resurfaces, rolling gently across the tongue with a green, grassy echo of Speyside origins.

Delicate perfumes introduce a wine of presence. This release is as good as it always is. Lemon oil, lemongrass, nashi pear, woodsmoke, gravel and whispers of both passionfruit and snow peas. The nose on this wine is exquisite; the palate is perfectly composed. There’s just-enough texture and good carry through the finish. This release had me at hello but every step thereafter it sealed the deal. Drink 2026-2031+.

They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.

Firm reduction overshadows the fruit today though there is good freshness to the sleek, racy and delineated middle weight flavors that possess slightly better complexity on the super-refreshing, clean and bracingly dry finale. Alongside Longeroies and Champ Perdix, the Clos du Roy is one of Marsannay’s largest and most revered vineyards. Some consider it the appellation’s finest terroir, which makes sense when you consider the name: Roy is the ancient French spelling of roi, meaning king. It’s a steep, east-facing slope above the village of Chenôve, on the same line as the Gevrey Premiers Crus to the south. It has lightish red soil, including some sand, over a bed of Comblanchien limestone. When Marsannay finally gets its first Premier Cru (expected 2024), Clos du Roy will likely be at the front of the queue.
Pataille farms a serious 2.25 hectares in the clos, from vines planted in 1952, 1965, 1978 and 2001. As for the winemaking, ‘the king’s vineyard’ gets the royal treatment in the cellar, with 18 months in barrel and six months in tank before being bottled unfiltered. It ferments almost entirely as whole bunches.

The Marsannay Clos du Roy from Pataille is consistently among the top wines of the northern Côte de Nuits. The 2022 features soulful, super-ripe cassis and bramble fruit aromas with a savoury, smoky edge. The texture is dense and concentrated, with abundant tannin and enough freshness to drive this to an impressively long finish. The grapes are from Pataille's parcel of more than two hectares of mature vines planted in this south-east facing site's limestone pebbles and clay soil. Once again there is a highly attractive floral quality to the softly spicy if distinctly earthy nose that features mostly notes of dark currant and exotic tea. There is good underlying tension to the well-detailed medium weight flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the chiseled and sneaky long finish that is akin to rolling tiny pebbles around in the mouth. This decidedly firm effort is an excellent example of the vineyard though one that will need all of a decade to arrive at its apogee. Drink through 2032+.

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a very well-defined bouquet with black cherries and wild strawberries, hints of inkwell and brine joining the chorus line with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, with a very elegant, poised finish. About as good a Marsannay as you will find in this vintage. Drink 2025-2038.

This is a big and powerful wine, particularly by the usual standards of En Remilly and one that should age effortlessly. Well worth investigating. Drink through 2033+.

The palate impression of the middle weight flavors is not nearly as dense or powerful but it is markedly finer and more mineral-driven as well before terminating in an almost delicate yet punchy, long and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is a Truffière of finesse in 2023 but one that should also amply repay extended keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Juicy dark to black cherry, wild strawberry and anise flavours flood the mouth with spicy cedar, earth and infusions of fresh herbs sitting in the background.
