2018 Adrien Renoir Les Epinettes Extra Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$340. 00Bottle$4080.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkAdrien Renoir is one the brightest new talents to emerge from Champagne in recent years. Working with his father Vincent for several years at their 7 hectare domaine in Verzy, in 2019 the wines were re-launched under his name, and in quick time has caught the attention of educated Champagne drinkers the world over. One of the first changes he insisted on was abandoning herbicides completely, and the estate vineyards are certified organic as of 2020. Oak use too has increased, along with more focus on specific parcels for his lieu-dits bottlings. In the cellar fermentations occur with native yeasts, lees stirring is practiced, and there is no sulphur used at bottling.
Les Epinettes is 100% Pinot Noir from a vineyard planted selection massale in 1971 where the soils are primarily clay-limestone with some chalk. Raised 100% in older barrels, the wine spends 36 months on lees before disgorged at very low Extra Brut levels around 1g/L.
Other Reviews....
Entirely Pinot Noir, the 2018 Champagne Les Epinettes has a rich straw hue and a seductive cologne of bergamot, clove, currants, and kirsch. Continuing to the palate, it is saturated and full-bodied, with its pillowing mousse creating a weightless feel before it becomes more savory, with notable salinity, a glycerol-rich texture, and notes of citrus oils. A serious wine, it will hold up over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

Fred Savart is one of the most engaging and energetic vignerons currently in Champagne. Based in the village of Ecueil where most of his holdings are located, Fred also farms a handful of vines across into Villiers-aux-Noeuds, along with most recently accessing plots in Le Mesnil and Oger. His wines are largely based on Pinot Noir, with a smaller amount of Chardonnay, and while initially there was a focus on fermentation in stainless steel, more increasingly his wines are raised in barriques and demi-muids. Each of his wines are born out of inspiration and intuition rather than any sort of set formula, and are routinely some of the best expressions of terroir viewed through the vagaries of vintage.
Les Pinots is a one-off Champagne, belding 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Pinot Meunier from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. Disgorged in July 2021 with 1gr/l of dosage, only 4,000 bottles were made.

Aromas of peach, sweet red berries, peonies and buttery pastry introduce Savart's 2018 Extra Brut Premier Cru Les Noues, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with a sweet core of fruit and a pretty, pillowy mousse. 2020 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf Du Pape Reserve Des Deux FreresChateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenABV: 16%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres raises the quality bar higher, offering scents of cedar, dried spices and black cherries. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Serine (Syrah), aged in new barrels, it's full-bodied, rich and plush in feel, finishing long and velvety. I've said this before, but it bears repeating—I'm not usually a fan of maturing Grenache in small-format new oak vessels, but it seems to work in this case, resulting in a wine that's somehow dessert-rich, yet savory and not overbearing, with a soft, almost pillowy impression on the palate. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 2022)The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Réserve Des Deux Freres is almost all Grenache but includes a tiny parcel of very old vine Serine Syrah from Charbonniere. This deep purple-hued effort boasts a killer nose of blackberries, cassis, spicy wood, graphite, and ground pepper, among other Provençal nuances. Pure, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it has building yet perfectly ripe tannins, the vintage’s more elegant, streamlined style, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and keep for 15 to 20 years. Drink 2022 - 2042.

2019 Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley VolnayBurgundy, FRANCE$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkThomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.
Other Reviews....
Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. 2018 Giacomo Conterno Francia BaroloPiedmont, ITALY$720. 00Bottle$8640.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d'Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. Drink 2027 - 2055.
94-97 points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. Drink 2024-2043.

93/6/1% cabernet sauvignon/malbec/cabernet franc. Hand picked, 50% wild ferment, 21 days on skins, matured for 19 months in French oak (100% new). If you haven't had the pleasure of drinking one of these cabernets as an older wine, you may not get the full scope of the young wine on release. Here, today, it is tightly coiled, spicy and concentrated. The savoury, biscuity oak we often associate with good quality Bordeaux is here in spades, and it encases the kaleidoscopic flavours that lie possible beyond. However, in 10 years, this wine transforms into a powerful and expansive wine of depth, grace and evocation. From one of Margaret River's greatest all-time vintages, this is a wine for the ages. 2013 Bruichladdich Islay Barley Unpeated Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 50%"...a truly memorable dram." - whiskyadvocate.com
The eighth release in the Islay Barley series was produced using barley grown on Islay in 2012 by farmers from seven island farms, dried, malted and distilled in 2013. Left unpeated and matured in a mix of first-fill American whiskey casks and x-European casks for a minimum of eight years, it's described as having aromas and flavours of honeyed porridge and lemon meringue pie. Like the earlier releases, each expression from the individual growing season is subtly nuanced; each a variation on the signature maritime-citrus, barley forward style that makes these bottlings popular year in year out. Non chill filtered. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This expression, now in its eighth edition, showcases Bruichladdich’s commitment to Islay terroir. It’s an 8 year old in a world of double-digit age stated scotch, but you’ll never accuse this delightful whisky of being too young. Sweet biscuity aromas along with ripe peaches and pears lead to a creamy palate of lemon cake, candied orange, nougat and vanilla, all balanced by the wood influence and hints of salinity. Water brings out sweet nectar and honey. The finish is graceful, long, and lively, making this a truly memorable dram. 94 points —David Savona, whiskyadvocate.com
...Same set-up. Colour: a notch darker. Nose: fruitier, rootier, more expressive. Celeriac and fennel, sweet beets, gentian (hurray!) and whiffs of wee white pineapples. Hold on, viognier? With water: back to breads, grist and oats, plus white pepper. An unexpected turn of events. Mouth (neat): once again, a fruitier version after the 2012, with more jelly babies after the ginger mints and cinnamon. With water: same as the 2012. Finish: same, with some hot spices coming to the front. Comments: not much to add. This one's very marginally fruitier, but it'll all depend on the amount and type of water you'll be using. Let's make this clear though, I think they are great drops! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundTwo plots, both at the top. That which came from the Confuron family is trained in gobelet fashion to reduce vigour, while the Noëllat plot has a much better selection of pinot plant material and old vines. Glowing red purple. Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

A highly spiced nose features notes of cassis, plum, hoisin and a hint of sandalwood. The ripe, mouth coating and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent length on the well-balanced if youthfully austere finish that also really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is definitely a "buy and forget you own it" wine as I would advise not touching a bottle for at least 10 years and 15 to 20 would likely be better. Drink from 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe vines date back to 1926. Rich dense black purple, the nose immediately gives a sense of weight and of distinction. Quite muscular but in addition to, rather than at the expense of, finesse. There is a fine succulent fruit and a sense of harmony. I can see the wood a touch though at the back, though Louis says this is a recent and passing phenomenon.

This is notably ripe but not roasted with its combination of cassis and liqueur-like aromas of plum, black cherry and sauvage hints. A top note of herbal tea is present on the earthy and markedly sauvage-inflected aromas of red and dark currant with a smoky nuance. The denser if less refined medium weight plus flavors exhibit a taut muscularity along with focused powerful on the sappy, serious, youthfully austere and impressively long finish where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is always one of Taupenot's best wines, certainly among the 1ers, and 2019 is no different. Drink from 2031+.

The Nervi estate is the oldest in the DOCG of Gattinara, north of Piedmont, founded in 1906 by original owner Luigi Nervi. A long time admirer of the wines and friends of the owners at the time, Roberto Conterno (of Giacomo Conterno fame) purchased a 90% stake in the winery in 2018, renaming it Conterno Nervi. A relatively new designation, Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, and while the wines show similarities to those of Piedmont, generally Gattinara reds have a more elevated feel, savoury and structured, with plenty of acidity and fine tannins allowing for great longevity.
Effectively the ‘Classico’, this is comprised of four key plots, Casacce, Garavoglie, Molsino and Valferana. Nervi's Gattinara is fermented and macerated in steel at controlled temperatures for 25–30 days, followed by 30 months in large Stockinger Austrian botti.

There are 20 cru vineyards in the Gattinara DOCG appellation, with Valferana sitting near the geographical centre of the commune at a height of 370 metres. Although it sits a little lower than Molsino, Valferana doesn’t get as much sunlight or warmth, facing predominantly west, and it is one of the steepest crus. Most vintages, the wine has a tight, focused frame. ‘Valferana’ is the more austere of the two crus, with a tightly wound core gifted by Gattinara’ s porphyry-gravel soil; the wine is disciplined with myriad mineral nuances. The wine is fermented and macerated in tini (large conical wooden vats) for 3–4 weeks, then aged for another 40 months in various large wood formats.
Other Reviews....
As all Nebbiolo lovers know well, this mighty Piedmont grape is especially sensitive to place. That's the main takeaway with the Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Valferana. This is a west-facing vineyard at 300 to 350 meters in altitude that is characterized by volcanic soils and slightly cooler conditions, resulting in an etched and very focused expression of Nebbiolo (as opposed to Molsino that tends to be open-knit and more concentrated). Valferana is tightly chiseled and crisp, with blue flower, sour cherry, tobacco smoke, underbrush and candied orange peel. The wine offers a complete picture of the grape from Gattinara with some extra tannic edge to carry it through the years. Drink 2024 - 2042.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.
Along with Rugiens, Les Grands Epenots is considered the best Premier Cru in Pommard and the soil here is slightly richer than Petits Epenots, with high levels of iron. Average vine age in these plots is over 50 years old, and the wine is fermented with 100% whole cluster before aging in barrel (30% new) for 12 months plus four months in stainless steel.
Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

Each of these producers were inspired by the natural wine growing and wine making methods of local hero Jules Chauvet. Their aim is to help the unique Beaujolais terroir express itself with minimal intervention, harnessing old vines farmed with organic practices, fermentation with natural yeasts, along with limited use of sulphur. Together they have raised not only the profile of the region, but demonstrated that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.
Also known as "Petit Max" by his friends, Guy Breton produces wines that are easy to drink, and his are typically the lightest in colour, the lowest in alcohol, and the least tannic of the Gang of Four. Breton’s domaine is comprised of just over four hectares, most of which are located in Morgon, and are supplemented with purchased grapes from surrounding appellations enabling him to vinify a diverse portfolio of Beaujolais crus. These are dangerously drinkable wines, but if you can resist the urge also age with grace for many years.
P'tit Max is sourced from a selection of the domaine’s oldest vines averaging over 90+ years old in the Les Charmes lieu-dit of Morgon. Vinification is similar to the Morgon “Vieilles Vignes” bottling, however sees longer aging at 12 months élevage, and in slightly newer barrels.

First produced in 2008, the Regnie is sourced from the hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Py of Morgon, around the village of Régnié-Durette. Guy’s grandfather handed down the two parcels that go into this wine: one with 100-year-old and the other with 35-year-old vines. The shallow soil of sand and decomposing stones gives the vines easy access to the bedrock, creating firm wines with more grip and acidity than in Morgon.

Delord XO Bas Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%Since 2018, the minimum for XO is ten years old (it was previously just six) and while the exact age isn't stated, this is probably a blend that includes some much older brandies. Typical for Armagnac are the scents of ripe plums, dried apricots, dark chocolate and gingerbread, complexed by hints of tobacco and hazelnut. They're repeated in a medium bodied palate where vanilla, cedary oak, liquorice bullets, cinnamon and pepper warmth carry the finish. The persistence is good, and being neither too fiery, nor too dry or sweet, Delord have created a better than average point of entry for newcomers to the category. It's also a friendly all-rounder, so apart from being enjoyed over ice, after a meal or matched with chocolate, nuts or dried fruits, this has enough body to work in cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

The aftertaste is dry, nutty, warming and medium long. Bottled in May 2022. 40% Alc./Vol.
Situated in Bas-Armagnac, Delord's distillery is to be found in the village of Lannepax, the ancestral home of the Delord family. They comment, "Our old Sier Armagnac alambics, that we wouldn't part with for all the gold in the world, produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie an hour. Our cellars contain our old treasured vintages and include more than 700 oak barrels that protect and age the Armagnac eau-de-vie dating from the 20th Century to the present day".
