Still with the meat fat and spice on the nose, the 2018 Domaine Clarendon Syrah is supple, elegant, midnight dark and pure. There is clarity here, without weight through the finish. It is more polished and less meaty/complex than the 2017 tasted beside it. Drink 2022-2032.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateAttractive Rhône-like aromas that belie the heady alcohol. Blue fruits, smoked meats, dried seaweed and a molten core of kirsch smeared with black olive paste. A big mouthful. The tannic kit and finish bit too drying to merit a higher score. Drink by 2024.

Ned Goodwin – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion - 2017 Dumangin Balcones Batch 023 Single Cask 6 Year Old Single Malt American Whisky (700ml)Waco, Texas, UNITED STATES$260. 00Bottle$3120.00 DozenABV: 46.7%
The Dumangin whiskies follow in the footsteps of French pioneers like Michel Couvreur - only there's another layer of expertise bought to the table. While Gilles Dumangin clearly has a 'magic touch' when it comes to selecting and maturing world class singles and grains, he isn't just a buyer and bottler. He's an acclaimed winemaker applying his know-how. Whiskies arrive in Champagne to complete their maturation in 228 litre barriques in the cellars at Chigny-les-Roses. The Ratafia finishing gives them a distinctive signature: a subtle yet delicious, creamy, fruity twist unique to Champagne.
Balcones was discovered by Gilles during one of his sales trips. Waco, the town hosting the distillery is subject to an extreme climate. During Gilles’ August visit, the outside temperature was 48°C. As a result, the ageing of whiskies is dramatically sped up compared to cooler climes (five years here is like twelve or fifteen in Scotland). Finished for 21 months in a Ratafia Champenois barrel, batch 023 is a limited run of 265 bottles. 46.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Full mouthfeel with sweet tea, burnt marshmallow, cinnamon candies and marmalade with a very long finish with oak and pepper notes, followed by cardamom and roasted sweet corn.

2022 Paul Osicka Heathcote Shiraz - Last StocksHeathcote, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$36. 99Bottle$443.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2024-2034)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinEstablished in 1955 by former Czech vigneron Paul Osicka, this is Heathcote’s oldest producer, 2022 marking the 67th anniversary of the planting of the vineyard. Today, grandson Simon tends the 10 hectares of Shiraz vineyard producing a rich, highly revered Shiraz that always disappears quickly off the shelves.
After the dry hot spell of 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages, Heathcote had two good winters and a consistently warm (as distinct from hot) lead into the 2022 harvest. Simon Osicka ranks it alongside the 2010 and 2015 vintages and comments “The 2022 season looks to be very special for red wine from our vineyard.”
In recent years there has been a significant investment in processing and sorting equipment at Paul Osicka. The fruit now undergoes gentle processing, sorting and movement by gravity (no pumping) which results in just pure, perfectly ripened berries in the small open top fermenters. The fruit spends about 28 days on skins prior to pressing and maturation in French oak vessels. 60% of these are large oak vats (2000 litres plus) with the new oak component about 20%. The wine was racked once prior to blending and bottling in June 2023.Rich and powerful yet possessing sublime refinement, this is a stunning example of Heathcote Shiraz.
Impenetrable inky black dark purple colour with a dark purple black tinged hue. Very expressive and fragrant on the nose, it offers up a kaleidoscope of liquorice, violet, red to dark plum, blackberry and blueberry scents which are interwoven with vanillin cedar, hints of choc mint, fennel and pepper. Rich, sleek and powerful, the perfectly proportioned palate is totally gorgeous to drink. Expansive and plush in its feel, blackberry, liquorice, red to dark plum and blueberry fruits are laden across it with spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earth, choc mint and peppered fennel elements echoing through the back half. Seamlessly integrated, velvet smooth tannins provide the framework. Possessing magical balance, it’s graceful and fresh, and finishes exceptionally long and polished.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

The 2023 Malartic Lagravière Blanc, a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon matured for 50% in new oak barrels, reveals a lemony, citrusy bouquet with aromas of lime tree leaves, pear and herbs. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, textural and layered, it’s framed by bright acids and a long, elegant and mouthwatering finish. Drink 2025-2035.
90-92 points
Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 27, 2024)The 2023 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc has a taut, correct and, in some ways, conservative bouquet that takes time to unfold in the glass. But, I appreciate the tension and mineralité. Hints of petrichor and Granny Smiths eventually take control. The palate is very well balanced with a fresh lemon sherbet-, orange pith- and lemongrass-tinged opening. There's a very appealing texture and impressive weight on the finish. Overall, this is a superb white Malartic to drink over the next 20 years. Drink 2026-2046.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe 2023 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc is a seriously beautiful wine. Explosive aromatics meld into a core of orchard and citrus fruits. Bright acids pull it all together. I especially admire the wine's inner perfume and balance. This is one of the better dry whites of the year. A kiss of French oak lingers. Tasted two times. Drink 2025-2033.
92-94 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousA beautifully structured and complex white with pristine, bright citrus fruit and an exotic touch. There’s a mineral character to it, too, with oyster-shell and crushed-stone notes. It’s medium- to full-bodied with racy acidity that adds energy and tension. Very long finish with fine tannins that frame it nicely.

James SucklingMulled pears, subtle tropical fruits, classy oak, and subtle charcoal notes all shine in the 2023 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc, a gorgeously textured, medium-bodied white that has flawless overall balance, notable depth, and outstanding length.

2013 Charles Heidsieck Vintage Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$210. 00Bottle$2520.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A very striking nose with Reine Claude plums, old-fashioned apple varieties and some Nordic herbs. Structured and crisp with a very firm core, the finish driving and full of energy. Rich long finish with a chalky core. 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, the make up of the blend very unconventional for this house. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comThe bouquet of the 2013 Brut Millésimé is compellingly fresh and minty, complicated by notes of white fruit—notably pear and apple—citrus and gentle spices, as well as a light touch of smoke. With aeration, elegant pastry notes come to the fore. On the palate, this is a structured, tension-filled but airborne Champagne with racy acidity, fleshy and charming texture and a long, penetrating finish. It should age well over the next eight to 10 years. Disgorged in 2022 with nine grams per liter, this is a blend of 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay. Drink 2023 - 2038.
93 Points
Yohan Castaing - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateAn alluring, detailed aroma that is reserved and layered rather than hugely outgoing at present. There’s some maturity though, a measured weight of light apricot, ripe pear and pale strawberry fruit. Delicacy is the main theme, with touches of blossom, white peach, and only a quiet praline and caramelised apple richness. Less austere than the 2008, more focused than the 2012 and already quietly harmonious, this superb 2013 closes with chalkiness and verve. This could well prove the most finely tuned of the recent Charles Heidsieck vintage releases. 57% Pinot Noir, 43% Chardonnay with nine years on lees. Drink 2023 - 2040.
95 Points
Tom Hewson - DecanterDisgorged in January of 2023, the 2013 Champagne Millésime Brut was the last vintage from the cellar master for Heidsieck prior to Cyril Brun. The 2013 Champagne Millésime Brut is a bright straw yellow color and is based on the crus of Les Mesnil, Avize, Averney, and Aÿ. It’s fresh with aromas of wet stones, fresh quince, and fresh jasmine flowers. It has a chalky and focused texture, with ripeness to balance it out, and a long, graceful finish. At this stage, it feels more forward with 57% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay. A more mineral-tinged expression, it has a lot of charm and the promise of longevity over the coming two decades. It will be interesting to see how the Pinot shows itself over time. 8 grams per liter dosage. Drink 2024-2044

Audrey Frick - JebDunnuck.comAged for eight years on the lees before disgorgement, the Champagne is deliciously toasty with acidity and fine dryness. Balanced and now finely mature, this great wine is ready to drink.
96 Points
Roger Voss - Wine Enthusiast MagazineIntense aroma that combines ripe fruit – both citrus and pear – and also a touch of jasmine, as well as a deep, inviting yeasty autolytic character. Extremely complex and rewarding. On the palate, that same depth of yeasty/toasty character and the intense freshness of youthful fruit. An endless stream of very fine bubbles rising from the centre of the glass with bigger bubbles clinging to the sides – looks quite unusual. A powerful, long and vibrant wine that seems younger than its years. Extreme but balanced freshness with a slightly chewy finish as it warms up, as well as a suggestion of non-sweet honey. Excellent depth. Drink 2023 – 2032.

We all know the French love an archway. This one, in particular, was designed in celebration of such archways, by renowned French designer Serge Mansau. Now discontinued, the design exudes a creative and innovative ideal that reflects those very natures embodied in Jean Martell, who founded house Martell in 1715. A powerful expression, some of Martells oldest Eau-De-Vie was used to create this unique bottling. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 27, 2024)The 2023 Haut-Marbuzet is terrific. Dark, vibrant and quite virile in its expression, the 2023 Haut-Marbuzet has so much to offer. Plum, blood orange, pomegranate, spice and new leather are some of the notes that leap from the glass. Laphroaig 25 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2020 ReleaseIslay, SCOTLAND$1199. 00Bottle$14388.00 DozenABV: 49.8%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
Other reviews... A cask strength whisky, but don't expect a rambunctious blisterer. Age has given this one a mellowed beauty. It offers a deep, rich, soft peat influence on a thick and creamy palate, with dried seaweed, seashells, salinity, brine, charcoal, and muted medicinal notes—all imbued with sweet oak, lime, chocolate-covered marshmallows, and light pepper. Cooked pears, chocolate, and vanilla cream complete the finish. The peat has settled in, and a marvelous, mature whisky rises. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com -

Stauning Smoke Danish Single Malt Whisky (700ml)DENMARK$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 47%Made using barley smoked over heather and local peat, this is a nice addition to Stauning's core range. The style echoes Ardmore or peated Arran's with more sweet wood smoke or Highland peat than maritime character; the whisky glides across the tongue with a creamy, malty middle that gets lightly fruity and finely tannic towards the finish. Spices build, the smokiness persisting like a silky glaze over the malt, adding texture and length, ending with a delicious warming tang. Matured for 5-6 years in a mix of first-fill Bourbon, Madeira, Jamaica Rum and Virgin American oak casks. 47% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 1-2022 tasted from a 50ml sample.
Other reviews... Gold color. Grainy aromas and flavors of whole grain bread dough, roasted sesame, cedar, arugula, incense, and wet barrel with a round, crisp, medium body and a tingling, medium-length finish displaying accents of green peppercorns. A young, zesty Whisky with a flashy, oaky style. Gold Medal - tastings.com
...You cannot not love a Distillery that would name some of its whiskies 'Kaos' or 'Bastard'. Now 'Smoke' is a little more civilised, I'm wondering why they haven't used 'b**** smoke' or even 'f**** smoke' instead. Colour: gold. Nose: mega-LOL. Sauna oils, burning rubber (dragster after a race), bicycle inner tube, teak oil, glues and greases, gun oil, brand new Harley dealership, new Tesla… I'm sure you're following me. Love this. Mouth: huge fun. Wondering if they haven't used smoked water, or if they haven't kind of barbecued some unsmoked rye whisky of theirs, or used any other unmentionable processes. Who cares, I'm a fan of this 'whisky' that got off the beaten tracks long ago. Salty rubber? Snuff? Chewing tobacco? All-purpose industrial grease? Finish: long. Chewing salted tyres. I know. Comments: what's the price of fun? How many b*** 'points'? The question is, would I buy a bottle? Certainly not, I would buy a 6-case and present my five best friends with a bottle. Each. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Stauning Floor Malted Danish Rye Whisky (700ml)DENMARK$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 48%Stauning's first official product remains one of their best. Direct-fire distilled from floor malted rye and matured for 3-4 years in new American oak, this big yet balanced Danish whisky offers generous rye character from start to finish. Dense, toasty grains on the nose follow through to a full bodied, rounded, spiced-up delivery that pulls through flavours of crusty rye fruit bread as well as hints of caraway, vanilla bean and dark chocolate, ending tactile, oily and intense. Slightly restrained in terms of overall length, but lots of oomph for rye lovers to enjoy and experiment with. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 4-2022 tasted from a 50ml sample.
Other reviews... The best [malted ryes] I have encountered is from Alberta. Stauning has a different persona, retaining some of the sharper elements of unmalted rye, too. And from this evidence it is taking a quite and now magnificent shape. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
Distilled predominantly from floor-malted locally grown rye, the first impression is one of spiciness, with peppercorn, clove, cardamom, dark rye bread, dried apple rings, cinnamon bark, and pear. It's like a country kitchen in the fall. The taste is initially light and creamy, like malted milk, though the body fattens up with red apple, cranberry, clove, and pepper, ending with Bramley apples and a pleasant spiciness. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...A captivating whisky full of intriguing complexity. Broad flavours of bacon and smoky peat balance beautifully with the zesty tang of citrus fruit, sweet corn and pepper. A hint of tea gives an extra level of deliciousness. Incredibly drinkable. 96 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition
Complex and delicious, this deep-flavored rye opens with espresso, dark chocolate, and hints of campfire smoke and barrel char. The finish long, toasty and warming, spiced with allspice, clove and caraway. It's a bit like a s'more made on slices of dark-toasted rye bread. 97 points - wineenthusiast.com

Imbue Distillery Citrus Agave Spirit (700ml)Victoria, AUSTRALIA$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 37%You can't call it Tequila because it's made outside the designated production zone, but this novel spirit is actually created using Mexican Blue Agaves, fermented and distilled by Imbue right here in Melbourne. It tastes nothing like Tequila, instead the flavour focus is on ripe blood orange and pink grapefruit. That's because it's blended with Imbue's citrus liqueur which employs a mix of seasonal off-cuts (oranges, lemons and limes are also included). The production process not only minimises wastage but also results in a very convincing alternative to Triple Sec - silky, sweet and juicy, though perhaps slightly lighter than most European equivalents. Super easy for your Summer Margaritas, Palomas and Sunrises - just grab your shaker and mix up the joy! 37% Alc./Vol.

Speyburn 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%A big seller in the US, but almost unkown in Australia, since 1991 Speyburn has been a part of the Inverhouse group with their fifteen year old debuting in 2017. The set up is slightly unusual, including steam driven stills and worm tubs. The result has been described as "...a deliberately sulphury new make [think Knockdhu, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie] which changes in cask to reveal the singular delicate, fragrant character which lies underneath." 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Well done: Not an off sherry butt in sight, helping to make this an enjoyably rich and fulsome malt. One of the most inventive and sympathetic Speyburns of all time. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
...A mix of American and Spanish oak casks was used to mature this addition to the core range. A big blast of orchard and tropical fruits characterizes the early nose, along with honey, vanilla, and toffee. The palate also majors in fruit, this time principally oranges, plus caramel, cinnamon, milk chocolate, and lots of vanilla. The finish is quite short, with banana and ginger. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
... Colour: pale gold. Nose: leafier than the official 10, grassier, with even more raw barley, green tea leaves, grapeseed oil, some kind of greener plasticine, clay… Something clearly musty as well, the potato pit… etc. I find it really austere, but this rusticity’s pretty interesting. Unusual for sure. Mouth: rather sweeter and rounder, but all the leafy elements are still sitting there in the shadows. Vanilla-ed porridge, leather, bitter oranges, green tea, hints of spinach and sorrel… Good body at a good strength. Finish: rather long, rather on spices. Green spices, naturally, cardamom, a touch of mustard… Comments: serious whisky, perhaps a tad unsexy at times but at least it feels very honest, which I like. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

Kozuru Mellowed Excellence Shochu (700ml)JAPAN$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 41%Produced from 100% rice and matured in American oak puncheons for three to six years, this Japanese specialty blurs the lines between whisky and shochu bearing a resemblance to middle-aged Lowland grain or blended Scotch. Vanilla wafers, rice crackers and sweet cereals on the nose follow in a light, silky delivery with malty, biscuity flavours, frail vanilla, budding citrus oils and a spicy, finely tannic, dried grass and vanilla finish. This spirit's delicate character is easily lost with too much dilution. A few ice cubes are sufficient, or use it as a base for Summer long drinks. 41% Alc.Vol.
Other reviews... Gentle aromas of baked apples, plums and sweet vanilla with a complex and well-integrated palate. A powerful creamy texture and a soft oaky finish with dried fruits giving a balanced touch of sweetness. 98 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition
...Colour me (pleasantly) surprised! I found the Mellowed Kozuru really fantastic! It was incredibly vibrant and flavor forward but at the same time mellow and rounded, with a great flavour palette of florals and honey. This would be comparable to a hybrid of a sweet Sauternes white wine meeting a slightly dry Sake, moving from one profile to the latter. It’s got a really delightful creamy texture, depth and richness too - bright flavours surrounded by spices over an almost syrupy texture. It really striked me as elegant. The cask aging really did a great job of mellowing it out - and to that end, I couldn’t tease out any sense of the cask. There was no tannins or oakiness to be had, which I found really interesting as well. It’s as if the aging took place sans the woodiness of the cask. This was really approachable and friendly, very enjoyable to drink and definitely a stunner, quite unlike any other Shochu I’ve had in terms of depth, elegance and complexity. Top tier stuff! - 88bamboo.co

The 2023 Bastor-Lamontagne is terrific. In fact, this is one of the best vintages I have tasted. Passion fruit, pineapple, tangerine peel and mint are all beautifully lifted. Bastor-Lamontagne is always on the lighter, more airy side of Sauternes. The 2023 offers plenty of that finesse, but with a bit more mid-palate creaminess than in recent years. This is very fine effort. Drink 2026-2043.

The 2023 Sigalas Rabaud is still taking shape in barrel, yet it possesses notable depth and textural richness, even in this somewhat unsettled state. Wolfcraig 14 Year Old Triple Sherry Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)SCOTLAND$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 46.1%There are few more decorated whisky veterans than Richard “The Nose” Paterson. His latest project is a collaboration with Ian Macmillan, a four-decade Master Distiller who's spent time at Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston. Together they've created three premium blends. Famously claiming to have “rejected more than they selected”, the result is a series which marries the rich heritage of whisky in Scotland with a sense of modern innovation. Sub-titled 'triple cask', the 14 year old is matured in freshly emptied bourbon barrels and finished in three types of sherry casks - Amontillado, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel, all from Bodega San Andrés, Spain.
Far from your everyday blend, this skillfully composed whisky is geared towards single malt drinkers, or will be a bridge for beginners. In terms of aromatics, mouthfeel and taste, it carries the same gravitas as late middle-aged bottlings of Glenallachie, Glenfarclas or Macallan in a full bodied, sweetly malty, structured arrangement that conjures poached fruits, vanilla bean, cocoa and whiffs of dunnage warehouses. Spiced chutney and hints of peel marmalade complete the profile with oomph and freshness, extending the mid palate length. The impression you're left with is that Wolfcraig is here to make a statement - just how good blends can be when the right creative forces get involved. That goes for the presentation too. The 'cut glass' decanter evokes mid century modern design and adds a sense of refinement appropriate to the liquid, a fair portion of which you'd expect to be considerably older than the label suggests. Wolfcraig's 14 year old is set to remain limited to relatively small batches of around 4500 bottles in order maintain consistency of style and quality control. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Warm and appealing. Enchanting and exhilarating as gentle hints of sunkissed raisins, fresh peaches, tangerines and lemon grass evoke a sense of tranquility as they pleasingly drift in perfect harmony. Exciting aromas quickly follow on with nuances of creamy caramel and vanilla delicately dance in the background to complete this portrait of beauty. Taste: Generous and satisfying. There is true elegance in its muscle as succulent figs, sweet sultanas and Napoleon cake reward the palate, with a hint of demerara sugar and molasses. Rich and intense at first but like all good things you must wait; after all it has taken many years to consummate this loving union of different seasoning from the selected casks. The aftertaste of glazed tangerines, marzipan and chocolate mousse with fresh hints of spicy ginger and nutmeg provide the perfect finish to this luxurious blended whisky.

Original Island Gin (700ml)NEW ZEALAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 43.2%PLEASE NOTE: Glass colour may change from batch to batch
Located five hours by boat east of Auckland on the wild and remote Great Barrier Island, the suitably named Island Gin Distillery is a female-owned and run operation. “Madame Distiller” (aka Andi Ross) creates gins using solar power and local Manuka Bush honey, as well as more traditional botanicals like angelica root, ginger, Macedonian juniper and coriander. In line with classic London Drys, the freshness of the nose is captured in a whiff of white pepper, pine needles, liquorice root and woody juniper that's mirrored on the palate; Creamy then crisp, a flurry of peppery warmth gives way to juniper and citrus oils; Peel tang rounds off the finish followed by a perfect sprinkling of tingling spice. Easy to like and beautifully integrated, this is a pure, fresh, well-structured, all-purpose gin that works as a mixer but is just as satisfying in Martinis. The distinctive bottle is inspired by the indigenous Kina found in the surrounding waters of New Zealand and is made from recycled glass. 43.2% Alc.Vol.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkNot far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.
Other Reviews...
Polished and loaded with finesse, the Produttori’s 2019 Rio Sordo Riserva is a dazzling wine. It opens with heady aromas of new leather, perfumed berry, cedar and spice. On the savory, elegant yet structured palate, a backbone of polished, silky tannins seamlessly supports ripe Morello cherry, white pepper, black tea and star anise. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and intense. This needs a few more years to fully develop and promises great aging potential. Drink 2028–2039.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is quite deep in this vintage, with notable depth in its dark-toned fruit. This is an especially powerful Rio Sordo that is still coming together. Kerin O'KeefeVivid medium ruby color. The wine is finely tuned, with sweet violets, leafy lightness and red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate with violet notes, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, crisp finish. There is sternness here but personality. Will need time to evolve.

James SucklingThis wine is a vintage car. Elegant and sleek, a design that fits the modern world, thought its a classic. A power that lurks underneath the hood that when let lose, cannot be bottled again. This is a wine of beauty, depth and power. Dark cherries and plums laced with sweet and tangy spices evolve into blue violets and wild herbs. The palate is rich and giving, with warmed fruit compotes that are hemmed in by vibrant acidity and the most elegant tannins that feel like the perfect leather seat as you prepare to start the engine. Drink Now until there is no more.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Paje Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkPajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.

Pine forest, cedar, new leather and ripe red berry are just some of the intense aromas you’ll find on the fragrant 2019 Pajè Riserva from Produttori del Barbaresco. Youthfully austere and linear, the structured palate displays ripe Morello cherry, black raspberry, star anise and crushed mint alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity imparts fantastic energy and serious aging potential. What a fantastic expression of this site.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is full of character. Strong mineral, savory and floral notes jump out of the glass, before veins of tannin make themselves felt on the palate. A powerful, young Barbaresco, the Pajè is going to need a number of years to come into its own. That said, all of its signatures are very much present. Drink: 2026-2039.

Antonio Galloni - VinousPajé always represents the lifted, spritely like wine within the Riserva lineup of Produttori. This vintage holds true to that but with a slight darker note on the nose. Aroma of crushed raspberries mixed with black cherries, fresh bay leaf and sweet spice. The first sip causes the head to spin with glee as wild berries, dried roses and sage leap forward quickly tamed by fine tannins and vibrant acidity, acting more as headmasters, telling everyone to wait a bit more to show their goods. Drink 2026 - 2050.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOvello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.

The 2019 Ovello Riserva is succulent and enveloping, offering scents of dark-skinned berry, forest floor, violet and new leather. Full-bodied with impressive structure and fruit, it boasts ripe raspberry, black cherry and licorice supported by firm, close-grained tannins that provide the backbone. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is powerful, savory and intensely linear, in classico Ovello style, and yet it appears to have enough fruit behind its imposing tannins to develop well over the coming years. In this tasting, the Ovello feels pretty closed post bottling, but its inherent balance and qualities are there. Clean saline notes extend the finish in promising fashion. Drink: 2026-2041.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello displays a similar youthful red color but is riper and more seductive in its floral perfume of violets, black raspberries, tea leaf, and sweet herbs. It is broader and rounder on the palate, with ripe tannins, a bit more of an expansive feel, and a touch of warmth on the finish. It’s going to drink well over the next 15-20 years. Drink: 2024-2044.

Audrey Frick - JebDunnuck.comA perfect mixed garden, with aromas of turned soil, blackberries ready to be picked, herbs fragrantly filling the air and warmed raspberries sitting in their basked weave their way into and out of the glass. Savory flavors of mixed herbs, tobacco and licorice root open the palate as flavors of cherry and marionberries pop with fresh acidity against a frame of elegant and taut tannins. Drink 2026 - 2050.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkThe Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.

Rose, menthol, forest floor and leather aromas come to the forefront along with the barest whiff of asphalt. Full-bodied and structured, the palate delivers raspberry, blood orange, licorice and a minty note alongside firm, fine-grained tannins.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is shaping up to be gorgeous. The 2019 is marked by a very evident brightness that is not always present. Medium in body and gracious, with terrific balance, the Muncagota is very impressive in this early tasting of the 2019 Riservas. It could turn out to be one of the surprises in this range. Keep an eye on this. Drink: 2026-2039.

Antonio Galloni - VinousAromas of raspberries and forest berries with hints of graphite, tea leaves and cocoa. Medium-bodied with a polished and silky mid-palate, ending with a firm and chewy aftertaste. It’s fresh and vibrant overall. Try after three to four years.

James SucklingA youthful ripe red color, the bright and lifted 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is fantastic on the nose, with notes of bright pomegranate and orange zest. It also has fantastic energy and vibrancy on the palate, with a vertical and nervous feel, balanced ripeness, finely coiled tannins, and a long finish. Drink 2024-2036.

Audrey Frick - JebDunnuck.comThe nose opens with aromas of dried cranberries and red currant all mixed in a bowl with anise, clove and freshly cut herbs. Firm and structured with a lifted freshness that cuts across the palate. The palate transcribes the aromas perfectly with the addition of a touch of crushed stone that adds another layer to this wine that needs a spell in the cellar. Drink 2027 onward.

2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkMontestefano is one of the vineyards with higher concentrations of calcium in the soil; this gives the wine a powerful tannic structure. The extra warmth of the South facing slope is responsible for the full body and meaty texture, resulting in a deep flavoured wine with ripe fruit and tannins. In a wetter season it is usually the last to be picked among the Barbaresco vineyards. This is probably the Barbaresco that reminds more of Barolo where flavours of tar and roses prevail. A truly wonderful Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate with a classy finish that lingers without overwhelming the senses.
Other Reviews...
Combining power, intensity, class and great fruit, Produttori’s 2019 Montestefano Riserva is a phenomenal wine and a quintessential expression of this fantastic cru. It opens with heady aromas of new leather, Alpine herb, pressed rose, ripe dark-skinned berry and forest floor. It has the most Barolo-like structure of all the firm’s crus, delivering ripe Morello cherry, succulent raspberry, licorice and tobacco alongside a network of firm tannins that are more reminiscent of Serralunga than Barbaresco. A magnificent wine, with incredible aging potential.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup. Drink: 2028-2039.

Antonio Galloni - VinousHeady aromas that opens with black raspberries, cherry compote, and mixed sweet and savory spices. Subtle floral and herbal notes bolt in to add to the depth of the nose. Broad and rich across the palate with a generous dollop of mixed berry preserves with cracked pepper and dried herbs. The tannins are masterful with a refined nature that calls out the soul of Nebbiolo and shows how well this wine will age. Drink 2027 onward.
