This old vine Grenache was crafted from two blocks on Yalumba’s Tri-Centenary Vineyard, planted in 1949 and 1929 located in the tiny Barossa Valley sub region of Vine Vale. The two blocks were wild fermented separately - the first 40% whole bunch, the second 33% whole bunch fruit. Maturation took place in older French oak puncheons for a period of 6 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Alluring red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice aromas infused with hints of dried clove and graphite sail through the nostrils followed by some peppered earth end notes. Juicy red to dark raspberry, cherry and liquorice fruits overlay a dried herb and peppered earth back drop. Polished tannins finishing long, fresh and succulent.

Of all the wines in the Yalumba Grenache collection, for me, this is the value pick. A cracking wine which is seriously good buying. The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale. The two blocks were harvested for the wine, with the first seeing 40% whole bunch fermentation and the second 33%. A garnet/crimson colour, the nose is utterly gorgeous. This is Grenache on steroids. Strawberries and cream, florals, bergamot, spices and cherries. Take everything that is good about Grenache and it is jam-packed into this wine. It also offers that typical Grenache tannin mix of silky and sandy. Showing good balance and length, this is a superb example of a top-notch Barossa Grenache. Drink now and for the next eight years. Drink 2024-2032.

Elements of Islay Cask Edit Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $114. 99

    $1379.88 Dozen

"...I’m having a hard time putting this bottle down and I would wager that you would as well." - dramface.com

Elements of Islay Cask Edit is part of the new core range trilogy alongside Sherry Cask and Bourbon Cask. It's a composition of refill, bourbon and sherry casks bottled at 46% for the perfect balance of drinkability and personality. Rich, smoky single malt from Islay’s south coast marries together with a fresher, fruitier style from the north. Sip and savour, or experiment in cocktails.

Other reviews... The 46% ABV strength is perfect for an easy-drinking but richly flavoured experience. The sherry casks are not over-bearing, providing some delicate nuances under these well-matured bourbon malts. I’m having a hard time putting this bottle down and I would wager that you would as well. If you like peated whiskies, and balanced ones at that, then this should be sitting on your shelf. I’m very much intrigued to get my hands on the Bourbon cask and Sherry cask releases from Elements of Islay now. Well played Elements of Islay team.... If this is priced below other Islay malts in your market, it’s a steal and get it on your shelf ASAP. If it’s in the same price range as Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte 10, Ardbeg Corrie/Oogie/An Oa, then use your discretion.  However, depending on your preferences, this blended malt can stand toe-to-toe with any of these single malts. - dramface.com

A classically elegant and exquisitely presented cabernet from a vintage that combined fruit intensity and stylishness. The aroma has a distinctive lift of blackcurrant and slightly savoury olive tapenade with a deep dark chocolate character. Hint of bay leaf and oyster shell minerality. It’s finely balanced with fine-grained oak and firm fine tannins.

2022 Pyramid Valley Field of Fire Chardonnay
    North Canterbury, NEW ZEALAND
    $175. 00
    Bottle
    $2100.00 Dozen
    Closure: Stelvin

Driven to create one of the new world’s great cool-climate vineyards, it took Mike and Claudia Weersing 15 years and a quixotic global journey that included a lengthy stopover in Burgundy before they found their perfect site. Inspired by the climate and soils of that region, the duo finally found their special place in the limestone-rich soils of Waikari in North Canterbury. From here Mike and Claudia established Pyramid Valley and emerged as NZ pioneers of both biodynamic practices and high-density viticulture. For almost 20 years they inspired and/or challenged all those who came into their orbit. Their minute scale and exceptional dedication to their soils and vines led to some incredible wines being produced. First visiting the vineyard in 2007, Steve Smith MW (then of Craggy Range) was one of many affected by what he describes as one the most compelling and unique vineyards he has ever visited. When Mike’s health went into decline, the Weersings were forced to sell and Smith and his partner Brian Sheth acquired the estate in late 2017. The spectre of Burgundy is writ large over the foundation and ethos of Pyramid Valley, yet we should not expect imitations in terms of the style of the wines. Rather they have their own very distinctive style and energy, and this is precisely as it should be with terroir-driven wines; uniqueness is the point.
Named after the type of grass growing in the vineyard, this densely planted Chardonnay site sits on a southeast-facing, clay-limestone slope, which has been farmed biodynamically from the beginning. Although recently expanded by one hectare, the original plantings cover only a quarter of a hectare. Like its three sibling vineyards, it’s a vineyard farmed to Grand Cru Burgundy standards or higher. Fire is a cooler, rockier site than the Lions Tooth vineyard, and the wine typically shows a tighter, mineral core cloaked by layered, complex and fleshy fruit.

    Other reviews...
If the Field of Fire were a person, it wouldn't suffer fools gladly. The 2022 Chardonnay is a concentrated, direct and firm wine that knows where it's going and does so with a firm grip on your mouth. Focused, full of drive, it has sinew and sapidity. It is richly fruited - reminiscent of apricots alongside juicy lemon as well as toasted pine nuts, oats and flint. However, its quality is not in its flavors but its texture and power. Where I'm from, we say, 'Shy brains got nowt' and this isn't shy. Drink: 2025 - 2035.

Expansive, succulent white of depth and concentration with pretty lift and complexity from jasmine florals, warm straw, hazelnut and button mushroom savouriness amongst the mandarin, ginger, lime, green apple going on. The supple flow stretches luxuriously through the palate and finishes with a light, building chalky pucker. It’s such a chilled out white, but so much is going on. And gosh it drinks beautifully.

From a scant 0.3ha southeast-facing high-density planting of chardonnay on limestone/clay soils of the home estate. Wonderfully detailed white peach and citrus fruit with wisps of struck flint, soft spice, clotted cream, oyster shell, toasted hazelnuts, white flowers and crushed stone. Plenty of depth and flow on the palate but there's a real sense of sapidity and mouth-watering mineral drive, finishing chalky and uber pure.

Light-mid yellow colour; complex bouquet with smoky struck-flint overlying beeswax, buttery croissant and stone fruits. The wine is refined and subtle, intense and light on its feet and yet has a core of richness enlivened by refreshing acidity that helps draw the finish out to great length. An outstanding, high-energy chardonnay of great finesse.

Both of Pyramid Valley’s Pinot Noir vineyards are densely planted on clay/limestone slopes. Earth Smoke sits on the richer soils of the two: an expansive, east-facing slope with strong, beautifully structured soils that are comparatively high in limestone. The name here comes from the nickname given to fumitory, a plant of the poppy family that can be found thriving in this 0.85-hectare plot. Although both wines share a familial DNA, the later-picked Earth Smoke is typically the more structured and darker of the two, with more fruit weight to go with its tender, fine tannins.

    Other reviews...
Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented - full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Drink : 2025 - 2033.

A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character.

Sourced from a 0.8ha block of biodynamically farmed pinot noir on the Pyramid Valley Waikari estate. A beautiful, complex-smelling wine with brooding dark plum and cherry fruits, cut with spice, blood orange, amaro herbs, raked leaves, pressed wildflowers, twiggy nuance and crushed stone. So calm and composed on the palate with a sapid calcareous cadence, fine, chalky tannin grip and a long, gamey retreat.

Closed at first but soon opens up with an opulently perfumed nose, layered red/black fruits, florals and spice; a lot of earth and vinosity here, too. Hard to tease it all apart, both on nose and palate. Textural and compact with wonderfully integrated fruit/oak tannins and a spine of bright acidity. Clearly built for the long haul while offering a lot of joy already. Biodynamic. Drink: 2024 - 2032.

Angel Flower is a cooler, more exposed block than Earth Smoke. The shallow soils and north-facing aspect here result in a more floral and aromatic wine, although the weight and shape of the palate have much in common with Pyramid’s other single-site Pinot. The team have also recently planted a little Chardonnay on these soils, recognising its potential as a great white wine terroir.

It feels open weave and pretty with rose hip tea, alpine herbal elements, faint game meat, undergrowth and toasty spice strewn around the place. It slips into every corner of the palate, an attractive, sour-sweet flow of tart cherry dressed up with those savoury elements all sheathed in a web of ultra fine, silty, lacy tannin. It finishes with black tea and truffle and a building, drying, refreshing pucker. Fine, elegant, vibrant and energetic. A triumph for the variety.

From a 0.7ha limestone/clay, north-facing, biodynamically farmed slice of the Pyramid Valley estate in Waikari. A beautifully perfumed, ethereal wine that shows delicate redcurrant, red cherry and raspberry fruits with hints of crushed stone, red flowers, blood orange, clover blossom, sous bois and red apple pastries. There is a lot of light in this wine, all detail and shimmering clarity with a spacious mouthfeel, sapidity to burn and the most graceful of exits. Beautiful drinking.

Nose a little shy at first, then lots of perfumed red fruit emerges - tamarillo and plum, a dash of spice, a lift of blue flowers. The delicate, dancing palate has a surprising intensity of ripe, flowing red fruits, lovely fine, chalky tannins and bright, saline/minerally acidity. Very good length. This is smartly made, with no rough edges but isn’t overly polished. Drink: 2024 - 2032.

In 2018, Pyramid Valley became a two-property estate when it purchased the Manata vineyard in Central Otago’s Lowburn sub-region. The team quickly applied their precise viticultural standards to what was already considered one of the greatest sites in the region. In just three years, Paulin and his team have doubled the organic matter in the soil and achieved organic certification through BioGro NZ. They also immediately recognised the potential of the block they now call Snake’s Tongue—a nod to one of the many common names used for blue borage: Viper’s (snake’s) bugloss (ox-tongue). Fermented in an open-top concrete tulip, with 25% whole bunches and as much whole berry as possible, the wine matured in 25% new 500-litre puncheons for 12 months, followed by a further six months in neutral oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Other reviews...
It’s a fleshy, deeply flavoured pinot noir with an elegant bent under its more muscular frame. Dark choc-raspberry, liquorice, cranberry, aniseed, some garam masala spice elements, a bit of warm game meat and some rosy, rose hip tea elements. The wine quite grippy and drying in tannin, a little new leather-meets-river-pebble feel here. Bold and savoury hand-in-hand, though the dryer frame may challenge some for expectations.

Lowburn Terrace pinot noir from the Mānatu vineyard. Mid-crimson with red plum and dark cherry fruits cut with spice, citrus blossom, dried orange peel, amaro herbs, pressed wildflowers and crushed rocks. Sleek, savoury and red-fruited on the palate with layers of fine spice and some distant game and amaro tones; tannins super-fine and chalky and a bright, minerally cadence.

The 2022 Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir won't be released until October 2024, so this is definitely a pre-release tasting, but it’s a wonderful insight into what is to come. There’s petrichor, asphalt, graphite, black tea, satsuma plum, cherry flesh and red apple skins. This has the tannic density of the 2021, but there is far more restraint and delicacy in the fruit profile. I love the way this performs in the mouth, with dried ginger, blood orange, red pepper, a hint of sesame seed and orchard fruit. A superb wine of presence and delicacy. Drink: 2024 - 2036.

     "A totally non-coastal peat, it's a welcome variation for us." - whiskyfun.com

The second in the Meikle Toir series gets some of its complexity from casks made of Chinquapin oak (Quercus Muehlenbergii) sourced from the Northern Ozark region in Missouri. A subspecies of Quercus Alba, Chinquapin delivers spicy flavours and aromas, so it's probably closer to French oak than American oak when it comes to flavour influence. Or, as The GlenAllachie's Warehouse Manager Lindsay Cormie explains, "The Chinquapin cask itself has the aroma of old leather and cigar smoke, which works wonderfully well with the sweetness derived from the Bourbon casks – the combination of both casks complements our beautifully sweet peat character."

Other reviews... That's right, Glenallachie's own peater, in this case peated to 35ppm peat IN THE DISTILLATE (I've heard). This is how you should pronounce it: 'Mee-Kuhl Tor', Sounds like the name of a Norwegian doom-hard-black-metal band, does it not. Colour: gold. Nose: very modern, very cool, with lots of bacon, sauna oils, and new rubber. It's almost like visiting a car dealership with all these new tyres and all the spent motor oil gathered in the trays. There are many Speyside distilleries that have recently tried peat, including some previously managed by Billy Waller (Benriach), and most have achieved slightly average results in my opinion. That is not the case here, I really like this very... automotive profile. Cars and bacon, nice combination! Mouth: in keeping with this, but with new flavours like burnt lemon tart and worn-out dragster tyre. It's really quite fun; it's far from the first 'Chinkapin oak' from Glenmorangie, do you remember it? A totally non-coastal peat, it's a welcome variation for us. Finish: long and more lemony and spicy, that's the American barrel responding to the peat. Comments: It's a bit like the Fight Club, but indeed, it's fun. I think we're going to stop before we see who won, we don't have all night (nor a good litre of this crazy Meikle Toir) ahead of us. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

... Smooth, soft, and a little bit of fruit, crisp malt, smoky sawdust, iodine and liquorice, cashew nut butter, bonfire, freshly rolled tobacco, charred lemons, wood fired oven bread. Despite being slightly confused about how similar this sounded to the original, there are some really distinct notes, and this has a good value in the lineup. - malt-review.com

Meikle Tòir (pronounced MEE-kuhl tor) is The GlenAllachie’s peated project. The peating levels (PPMs) are pretty high and were taken from the mature 5-year-old whisky. The Original comes matured in 1st Fill Bourbon, Rye and American virgin oak casks, with a spirit PPM level of 35ppm (that's close to something like Lagavulin or Ardbeg). Notably, these whiskies employ mainland peat from St. Fergus (like Ardmore), a flavour which is generally sweeter than that of coastal peat. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews...  Warming buttery peat, malt drink, coconut Laska, salted caramel cream, a little zest, oily texture, shortbread rounds with smoked sugar rim, green apple skin good cigar smoke with a good lick of salt. Very tasty, a good alternative to Caol Ila now the prices are going daft. Very competent whisky at a fair price. - malt-review.com

...There’s a sweetness to The Original that works well with the rather elegant peat. It might just be the combination of long fermentations and Walker’s wood wizardry that elevates this to a more mature level than many other young peaters. - wordsofwhisky.com

    1800 Cristalino 100% Agave Anejo Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

Matured in French and American oak barrels, finished in x-port casks, then charcoal filtered to restore its clear appearance, 1800's Cristalino falls somewhere between an Anejo and a Blanco. Bottling at just 35% ABV makes for a featherweight tequila, smooth and accessible with a delicacy and lightness that approaches vodka. Warming peppers and a low-definition waxy-agave character shine through the finish. Use it as a shooter or in Summer cocktails.

Other reviews... Clear color. Aromas and flavors of apple cider vinegar, brown butter, pastry dough, and toasted sesame with a round, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a warming, interesting, medium-length finish with impressions of tart green apple, sweet cream, lemon curd, almond cookie, and fresh cut grass. A light, citrusy Cristalino Tequila to be enjoyed in the sun. 92 points - tastings.com

Morris Rutherglen 36 South Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Rutherglen, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Morris enter the massive blended whisky market with an Australian take. Crafted in the famous Rutherglen wine region and matured in the family's x-red wine casks, it employs both malted barley and wheat in the mashbill. Clearly designed for approachability, from the malty nose to the medium-bodied 'blend feel', this bridges a gap between entry level bourbon and single malt, kissing the mouth with a soft lick of vanillan oak, lighter grains playing second fiddle while a delicate peachy fruitiness rounds out with balancing spices. Enjoyed over ice it's a success, but it flattens out with minimal dilution. At the asking price, well worth considering over big brand Scottish blends. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Morris's new blended whisky is one of the least expensive on the Australian market, priced to compete with domestic blends. There’s good grain density on the nose with none of that vodka-like smell apparent in some inexpensive blends, showing good cask influence and excellent integration backed up by nice fruit and a whiff of rubbery smoke. Easy-drinking on the palate but still with plenty of grip, this is absolutely interesting enough to sip on. But in a mixed drink, this whisky would shine, pairing perfectly with dry ginger ale or cola for an Aussie answer to Johnny Double Black. It's wonderful to see more whiskies like this on the market that can challenge imported brands and keep those dollars local. 88 points - Fred Siggins, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Notes from the producers... Nose: Aromas of toffee, vanilla, and oak, with subtle notes of dried fruit and spice. Palate: Smooth and creamy, featuring a blend of caramel, oak, and soft orchard fruit flavors with a hint of spice. Finish: Medium-length finish with lingering notes of sweet vanilla and toasted oak.

    IRELAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

The talented independents 'Gleann Mor Spirits' have got their hands on a mix of Irish whiskeys. Blended and bottled without chill filtration, the grain component was aged in Virgin oak and re-char Bourbon casks. The triple distilled malt was aged in an x-Bourbon barrel, then finished in an Oloroso octave. What you get is an elegant, lightly fruited Irish with slight sherry input and an oily malt character beaming through the vanilla-laced finish. Easy drinking. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 43% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Toffee apples, honey, vanilla and fleshy fruits with a dry toasted oak finish.

Notes from the importers... The palate is full, with oak spice, raisin sweetness and more biscuity malt. A long, broad and clean finish with slowly increasing oak spice.

    ABV: 45.2%

Whiskey Hunt Australia's debut with Woodford Reserve comes courtesy of the distillery's owners, Brown Forman. Guided by Woodford's Brand Ambassador, Andy Tsai, in December 2023 the group were invited to choose from three Woodford select profiles. Unlike most WHA releases which have been single cask picks, the Woodford Personal Selection Program asks customers to preference a bourbon that matches their palate, typically based on three distinct distillery 'profiles'. Jack Daniels (also owned by Brown Forman) have a similar approach. No.2 was judged the winner, showcasing aromas of oak shavings, cherry-dark-chocolate and dried peach, complemented by medium bodied flavours of burnt caramel, subtle smoke, orange spice cake and drying oak. True to the Woodford house style, the whiskey was distilled from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley with 180 one-litre bottles imported to Australia. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

A power of fruit and a power of spices. This is an excellent release. Sweet plums, smoked meats, black peppers and an array of cedar, bunchy herbs, stalk and toast characters. Tannin curls impressively through the back half of the wine; it feels both plush and fresh throughout; and while it’s definitely peppery (and floral) it’s the plummy, boysenberried fruit flavours that drive it. The Stellenbosch wine region in South Africa's Western Cape is renowned for its diverse terroir, featuring ancient granite and shale soils that provide a strong foundation for viticulture. Its Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cooling breezes from False Bay, helps moderate temperatures and preserve grape acidity. This unique combination of soils and climate enables Stellenbosch to produce high-quality wines known for their depth and elegance. Dedicated to the region, the Cravens focus exclusively on single-vineyard wines from Stellenbosch, working closely with growers to craft wines that reflect their unique origins and sense of place.
In 2015 the Cravens discovered a beautiful bush vine Chenin Blanc vineyard in the Polkadraai Hills, previously farmed for sweet wine production. With some care, the block was transformed for dry wine production.. The fruit is whole-bunch pressed to a concrete tank for natural fermentation and malolactic conversion. The wine rests on lees for four months before its first racking, spending a total of nine months in concrete before bottling.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc comes from a parcel next to Reyneke in the Karibib Vineyard and was aged entirely in concrete. This has a more complex and vibrant nose than the Chardonnay, revealing yellow fruit mixed with a nutty, slightly smoky scent. The palate is very well balanced with a citrus-fresh entry and a very subtle flor-like finish that comes through more clearly on the aftertaste. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2032.

Chardonnay, long enjoyed by the Cravens, inspired a decision to craft their own version, with fruit sourced from the Polkadraai Hills, known for adding salinity and freshness to white wines. In the cellar, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight, and transferred to neutral 500L French oak barrels for fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Poli Marconi Vaca Mora Amaro Veneto (700ml)
    Veneto, ITALY
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 32%

One of the finest Amaros to hit the market in recent years, Poli's Vaca Mora is a tribute to the region's original steam train - the Vaca Mora, or Black Cow - which started to make regular trips to Schiavon in the late 1800s. Stopping in front of GioBatta Poli's tavern, the 'Osteria Al Cappello', waiting passengers could tipple at a glass of wine or local bitters prepared from an infusion of herbs, fruit peels and roots. Poli's distillery took over the tavern premises in 1898, completing the association. The contemporary sienna-brown elixir is based on plants, herbs and flowers with digestive properties, however, unlike most Amaros, it tastes properly bitter with minimal sugar intruding on the freshness. Garden herbs, especially mint leaves feature, the sweet, silky entry giving way to earthy root-like notes, then more mint and herbal character before bitter peel, gentian and cinchona grip the palate. Simple soda works beautifully, making for a fabulous refresher. As for cocktails, we'd expect a little should go a long way. While there's considerable diversity in this category, from the citrus accents of Armacardo or the sweetness of Averna, this expression is closer to Alpine Amaros like Braulio. It should satisfy those looking for a digestif with pitch-perfect bittersweet balance and maximum freshness. 32% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... a wooden box full of officinal herbs and mint leaves...balmy like a herbal shop.

Domaine Christian Moreau is one of the most respected names in Chablis blessed with magnificent vineyard holdings in the best areas of Chablis. The highlights are undoubtedly the amazing range of Grand cru vineyards including one single holding of approximately 3 hectares in Les Clos as well as 0.41 hectares of Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos plus slightly smaller holdings in Valmur, Blanchots and Vaudesir. The wines are gaining in even clearer expression with the vineyards having been certified organic since 2013 and together with some new tanks and other investments the results are showing clearly in the wines with each vintage. These are wines of precision, crystal clear typicity, and elegance that will age classically while enabling tremendous enjoyment throughout their lives.

The Petit Chablis vines are located at the top of the hill of Grand Crus only metres from the Grand cru Valmur, with another very small 0.4 hectare planting also at the crest of the hill of Grand Crus (just above Vaudesir) that the Moreau family have planted more recently.

Burgess' "Mountain gin" is his Tassie riff on the classic London Dry. This full bodied juniper-bomb gives a starring role to native pepper berries harvested from the foothills of the Blue Tier, as well as herbs found on the way to Cradle Mountain. It's a fragrant shot of alpine freshness, with deep, lingering zingy coriander and earthy liquorice latching expertly onto the musky, piney juniper, and topped off by the zing of the mountain pepper. Our tasting from a small sample found a ripe, juniper-forward bouquet, menthol-fresh with aromas of crushed eucalyptus, pine needle, pepper and sea spray following through to a concentrated, medium dry burst of fresh juniper, black pepper, liquorice root and a coriander accented finish. The aftertaste is pleasingly spicy, balanced and long. A versatile gin to be enjoyed on its own or in classic cocktails. 43.5% Alc./Vol.

Australia is lucky to receive anything at all. The remarkably high standard and limited nature of official Willetts means they will be on collector's radars more than ever before. Followers of this brand know that Willett are more than a little fanatical about wood selection, so you can be sure the barrels used here have been selected by a producer at the very top of their game. The only downside is that prices have gone up in the last few years and we expect they'll continue to increase.

The inaugural release of Cobaw Ridge's "Negociant Wines" is sourced from M. Chapoutier's certified organic vineyards in the Pyrenees. These vineyards are cultivated with skill and care, fitting seamlessly with Cobaw Ridge's vision and objectives of honest wines produced from Organic Fruit. Crafted from fruit harvested from the outstanding "Landsborough" vineyard, this Grenache reflects the distinct qualities of the mudstone, quartz, and shale soil, which are wonderfully expressed in the wine. The grapes are delicately destemmed, with approximately 10% of whole bunches included in the process. After basket pressing, the wine is matured for 12 months in large oak barrels and bottled with a minimal addition of sulphur.

From the Landsborough Vineyard which feels somewhat put in lights by Owen Latta of Latta wines but of course there’s others who have been there before and around and done well. Just my compass. Now, Cobaw Ridge has a crack, and it’s exciting to see the family extending their reach and interpreting sites that a reel of others do now, to see their take on things. This has around 15% whole bunches in wild ferment, with the wine pressed off and then chills out in larger format oak after.
It’s a sweeter, riper fruit profile but not rich, indeed, just a few rungs up the ladder from fuller, bold rose wines and frisky as all get out. That being said, lots of flavour, sense of sweet fruit, raspberry, red cherry, sweet cranberry, blood orange and a swirl of sweet spices and minty, herbal elements. A touch of chocolate in there too. It flows well, it feels smooth with just a faint grip. That ripeness perhaps gets away a little in the wine, but charm here for sure. Some malt and gentle grip of tannin comes in late but appreciated. Easy. Drink 2024 - 2028

    2023 Cobaw Ridge Pyrenees Syrah
    Pyrenees, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Diam Cork

The inaugural release of Cobaw Ridge's "Negociant Wines" is sourced from M. Chapoutier's certified organic vineyards in the Pyrenees. These vineyards are cultivated with skill and care, fitting seamlessly with Cobaw Ridge's vision and objectives of honest wines produced from Organic Fruit. Crafted from fruit harvested from the outstanding "Landsborough" vineyard, this Syrah reflects the distinct qualities of the mudstone, quartz, and shale soil, which are wonderfully expressed in the wine. The grapes are delicately destemmed to small open vats for fermentation where the must is pumped over and gently hand plunged until dry. After basket pressing, the wine is matured for 12 months in a mix of 25% new French oak and old, small oak barrels, and then bottled with a minimal addition of sulphur.

    Other Reviews....
From the Chapoutier organic vineyard in Pyrenees. This off-site exploration for Cobaw Ridge a worthy project diversifying the interest in that wonderful estate and winery. It sort of suggests that things are good for sales of the estate wines and that this is interesting gravy – a good thing in an industry where woe is often a byword. The wines of course made with same care, attention, vessels and concern as per the estate wines. There is 25% new French oak employed here, though you couldn’t tell.
It’s one of those somewhat lighter weight wines yet distinguished by savoury, game meat characters and distinct crushed-rock minerality. It soars with perfume, dark fruited, stony, herbal, meaty, the palate an echo of this with streaks of pulverised pumice tannin and gently sweet fruit tempered by alpine herb and lavish black pepper. It’s a serious syrah, yet has refreshment factor and lift too. It has an edge, a cockeye and hip thrust, it is the wink of Alan Cooper and the laugh of Nelly Cooper and wholly Cobaw in derring-do and distinction. It invokes difference and charisma and charm. I’m so in. Drink 2024 - 2032.

Francois Voyer Cristal Grande Champagne Cognac Carafe (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $2499. 00
    Bottle
    $29988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Taking cognac packaging to another level is this stand-out Hors d’Age expression from Francois Voyer presented in a striking art deco-inspired case. Inside is housed a Sèvre crystal bottle, the gentle curves of the glass leading to a neck ribbon holding a gold-toned metal tag bearing the François Voyer name. A tall crystal stopper completes the decanter. The liquid inside is an appropriate match. A 15ml sample revealed a gorgeous, floral-soft bouquet, conjuring scents of mango and honey, dovetailing into vanilla and rancio. Despite being a minimum of 50 years old, the palate remains fresh, impeccably balanced yet surprisingly full-bodied with beautifully rounded flavours of passionfruit sorbet, quince paste, nectarine and Perique tobacco in a finish that fans out like a peacock's tail. The length and rebound are as expected, while the slightly higher abv helps to drive it all home. A pinnacle in Voyer's pantheon. 43% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... refined and lusty aromas of coffee cocoa, spices (cloves, cinnamon) with delicate dried fruits, followed by incomparable notes of grand cru chocolate with light humus scents, delicate pepper and cedar wood rounded out by an incredibly rich and prolonged finish.

Francois Voyer XO 1er Cru de Cognac Carafe (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Although it looks similar to Voyer's XO 'Gold', this 100% Ugni Blanc edition from Grande Champagne is a blend of slightly younger material (10-25 years old as opposed to 25-30). It's also designed as a choice for gifting, having a more embellished presentation. The nose evokes classic aromas of dried figs and apricots with hints of raisins, rancio, vanilla and cinnamon, following through with succulent dried fruits on the palate; there are nuances of sweet tobacco and triple sec too, trailing off with powdery tannins. Supple, confident and elegant as Grande Champagne should be. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... AROMAS: Wild peach, plum and quince paste, balanced between fruits and wood with notes of vanilla. MOUTH: Great elegance with wood and fruit notes that are supple, yet powerful.

Showing how wonderful Pinot Bianco can be in Alto Adige, this has aromas of white spring blossom, green apple and Alpine herb. On the polished, savory palate, fresh acidity accompanies green melon, Bartlett pear and Alpine herb before a tangy mineral close suggesting oyster shell.

Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Maison Ferrand has announced that its famous rum brand "Plantation" has changed its name to "Planteray Rum" with immediate effect. The company initially vowed to change the brand’s name in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd which sparked widespread conversations about systemic racism and protests in more than sixty countries in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The new name is a portmanteau with Plant referencing the sugar cane origin of rum and Ray referring to “the sun, being open to people, the heritage and savoir-faire of rum”.

To coincide with the announcement, Planteray has announced the release of Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut Rum, the first release to bear the new brand name. Using rum sourced from The West Indies Rum Distillery, the spirit drink is made in Barbados using locally sourced coconuts. Around one coconut is required to make one litre of the rum, each handpicked at peak maturity, the flesh hand-cut and sun-dried before being infused into the distillate. Four years of tinkering with recipes has resulted in a relatively limited product, intended to grow in sync with the increase of coconut agriculture on the island. In the meantime grab a bottle. It's an obvious choice for your next Pina Colada!
