Rich, silky and beautifully proportioned across the medium to full bodied palate are sleek layers of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits. Earthy fennel, smoky vanillin cedar, pepper and earthy dark chocolate elements form the underbelly. Velvet smooth tannins concluding long and plush yet refined and structured.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Aromas of rich blackberries, cocoa powder, rust, dark chocolate, red and dark plums and tar. This has a very deep, almost chasmic shape on the palate with some long tannins that wind out deep into the finish. Rich dark-plum, berry and chocolate flavors. Ironstone and clay soils of Moppa here. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

From a Shiraz vineyard planted on top of Moppa Hill, sitting at 380m above sea level, which makes it the highest elevation on the western ridge of the Barossa. 40% new barrique.
Very spicy and exotic, lapsang souchong tea, vanilla and perfume, ovaltine, crisp blackberry. Medium-bodied, earthy and savoury, tea and spice, tightly knit tannin, distinctly non-fruity, though has flavour including a sort of blackcurrant intensity. Dry and pulsing through the finish. Distinct personality and interest here. Drink 2022-2033+

Gary Walsh – The Wine Front

It's bold and opulent, offering gorgeously lifted aromas of dark fruit richness combined with smoky bacon, tapenade and vanillin oak characters on the nose. The powerful concentrated palate displays multi-layered mouthfeel and terrific complexity backed by chalky tannins, making it sturdy and gratifyingly delicious. At its best: now to 2038.

Very deep, dark red/purple colour, with a floral aroma overlying red and dark berries and plums. The wine is intense and powerful, elegant and very long, the aftertaste persisting for a very long time. A really stylish shiraz that combines power with elegance.

Le Gin de Christian Drouin Pira Gin (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Pira is made according to the same principles as the original version of Guillaume Drouin's Le Gin; each botanical is macerated and re-distilled separately in order to optimise the extraction of aromas. The Perry pear takes centre stage in this edition, along with juniper, vanilla, lemon, black pepper and Iris root. A small pear with a subtle aroma combining acidity and tannins, it is the other emblematic fruit of Normandy. In the Pays d'Auge, pear trees are generally planted on the edge of apple orchards. These long-lived and quite large trees can reach more than 15 metres high, with deep roots, forming excellent windbreaks for more fragile apple orchards.

Pira gin offers aromas and flavours of white fruits, black pepper and iris and can be enjoyed neat or as a gin and tonic, with a thin slice of pear or elderflower as a garnish. 42% Alc./Vol.

Papalin Haiti 4 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)
    HAITI
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 53.1%

Conceived by Velier's Luca Gargano, the Papalin project is dedicated to Caribbean styles of yesteryear, though specifically to rums of the late 1800s when Jamaican traders began to create blends from different distilleries. Myers’s and John Wray Nephew are two famous historical examples. In addition to exporting rums to Europe, they also produced their own blends, never specifying their origins. In the last seventy years an increasing number of European brands surfaced, then in the 1970s, distilleries began selling their own products. In light of all these changes, Papalin marks a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, now with a transparency that will be welcomed by rum purists.

The label's first release was dedicated to Jamaica. The spotlight now shifts to Haiti, with a rum distilled from sugar cane juice, sourced from five different distilleries: Sajous, Vaval, Casimir, Distillerie de Port-au-Prince and Le Rocher. A total of 32 selected casks made the cut, all entirely aged in the tropical climate, with maturations taking place in ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-whisky barrels. Technically, this is classified as a vatted rum. It's considered a versatile, accessible introduction to Clairin. 6000 bottles are available globally, and despite being young, its intriguing character has surprised many seasoned tasters. 53.1% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "Wow, a complex clairin that is really fun! Great, soft nose. The 4 years of tropical maturation bring a great creaminess. Pear and fresh sugar cane are added. Alcohol very well integrated. A real insider tip!" - Rum-x.com

2019 Providence Ex-Caroni Casks 3 Year Old Haitian Pure Single Rum (700ml)
    HAITI
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

Reported to be a collaboration between the Linge family of Berling, direct descendants of a famous Haitian rum dynasty (Barbancourt), and La Maison & Velier, Providence represents the first aged rum of the Distillerie de Port-au-Prince. Based on traditional methods, it's produced using syrup from an ancestral Cristalline sugar cane variety from the fields of Michel Sajous, located in Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, 150 kilometers north of the capital. Fermentation is carried out using selected yeasts and dunder from previous distillations, allowing for the development of impressive aromatic complexity. The must obtained after fermentation is distilled in two stages in a copper still, heated in a bain-marie, designed by German boilermaker Muller. The final distillate was matured exclusively in ex-Caroni rum casks for three years and then reduced to 52% before bottling. Summed up as "exotic and expressive" and declared "Robot free" on the label.

Other reviews... This was the odd one out and also a huge surprise. Considering the price tag you get a lot for your money. I found out that it needed to rest for at least 15 minutes and at 30 minutes the flavours just come at you. Intense and fruity with nice spices and cane. I really like the floral note from nose to finish and even the empty glass was wonderful after a while. - Kevin Sorensen, Rum-x.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich and concentrated. Camphor, powdery, mimosa, cane sugar, vanilla, lime blossom and flambeed banana. Palate: Lively and distinguished. Fresh cane juice, lemon, resin, roasted pineapple, ginger and cinnamon. Finish: Long and silky. Rose petals, oriental notes, pastry cream, praline, tobacco, coffee and medicinal notes.

Both the famous Moulin Rouge - best known as the birthplace of the can-can dance - and Maison Jean Fillioux were founded around the same time (1890). Notes from the producers... A tremendously dark and fully flavoured Cognac. The nose provides wonderful aromas of woodspice, vanilla bean, citrus rind, honeysuckle, tropical fruit and old sweet wine. The palate is rich in mouthfeel, with a thick vanilla custard note, a touch of sweet bananas, dense oak paneling and toasted spices. The finish lingers with exquisite dried fruits and sweet grapes that last and last. An ideal after dinner dram.

Rum chasers on the hunt for hard-to-find libations will be excited to get their hands on Haitian “Clairin” (artisanal rhum). Like village Mezcal, these heirloom spirits have been produced by farmers, catering for their local communities before other markets. Almost unknown outside of Haiti where they're generally dismissed by the upper class as a peasant's drink, Clairins deliver the distinctive aromas and flavours of Agricole rum or Brazillian Cachaca – and more. Once you taste them, you'll realise other white rums aren't worth worrying about.

Small craft distilleries known as 'guildives' are scattered throughout the country, often in the middle of the sugar cane fields. Villages like Cavaillon, Saint Michel De L'Attalaye and Barraderes each have their own version of Clairin emphasising their own 'terroir'. “The person with the most money in the neighborhood [often owns] the guildive, producing clairin with a donkey pressing the cane juice” explains Garcelle Menos, account manager for Boukman Clairin. “Most of the time, they’re a combination of column and pot stills, very small columns and very small pots.”

Un-hybridised sugar cane varieties with names like “Cristalline”, “Hawaii” and “Madam Meuze” are grown for their amazing intensity of flavour, despite being low yielding and so ignored by large-scale rum producers. Spontaneous fermentations are long, creating complex spirits, with every batch different from the last. Clairins are unaged, and unlike most rums which have no regulations regarding ‘flavour enhancements’, they have absolutely nothing added.

This rare, barrel-aged expression from the Vaval farm distillery is a landmark having been exclusively bottled for Australia (to our knowledge, the first of its kind). Distilled in 2016 by Fritz Vaval in Cavailon, 49 months in an ex-Caroni rum barrel has imbued a sublime secondary smokiness that sings alongside the natural intense, grassy and fruity flavours of the Clairin. Barreled on the 28th of May 2018 and bottled in June 2022, more than one taster has stated "It's hard to believe that's agricole!" 47.1% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Upon tasting, the vibrant aroma likely greets you first, where fresh, grassy notes of sugar cane blend seamlessly with the richer, deeper scents of oak and tropical fruits. The palate is likely to offer a delightful complexity, featuring a balance of earthy sweetness from the cane, intertwined with smoky whispers and spicy, oaky nuances. The finish is expected to be long and satisfying, leaving a warm impression that invites further sipping and contemplation.

Looking like a heavily sherried Highlander, this whisky comes matured in a range of casks, including x-Shiraz and Serbian oak. The nose sets dusty cocoa and dry wood against biscuity malt and vanilla; the palate richer and more giving with the sweetness of American oak threading through the creamy mouthfeel. Finished by lively spices and alcohol warmth, there are gently grippy tannins with hints of toffee and late vanilla in the rebound. A tiny dash of water is all that's needed to soften and further fuse the flavours. Batch #166 lands at 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Review Summary: Intensely aromatic, this a rich, highly seductive Syrah that powers through to a long plush yet refined finish.

The Detailed review: From the same winery as the 2021 Nicks Secret AC Blewitt Springs Syrah, this is from the esteemed Clarendon sub region of McLaren Vale which has the highest altitude vineyards in the district. First tasted around 18 months ago this has filled out beautifully and now at nearly 50% off delivers brilliant value.

    Pure seduction in a glass.

Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are intense blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas which are complimented by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, generously weighted and highly seductive, the palate features a plush textural feel with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits rolling over a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel back drop. Concentrated and powerful yet relatively refined in its feel, it boasts velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Combining power and refinement, it's beautifully lifted on the nose with dark fruit intensity, cured meat, cedar and cake spice aromas. The palate delivers terrific concentration and depth, splendidly framed by rich texture and layers of polished tannins. This is bold and sturdy, yet with finesse and balance, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2036.

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Gift Pack with 2 Glasses
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Comes with two Glenfarclas branded Glencairn whisky glasses.

Famous as one of Speyside’s most masculine whiskies, Glenfarclas 15 is matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the sherry. Bottled at 46%, the result is one of most full-bodied in the Glenfarclas stable. It's also one that tasters tend to notice the most batch variation in. Re-tasted in early 2022, the latest bottling takes some time to develop and blow off minor sulphur blemishes. Aromas pick up speed, echoed in attractively sherried flavours of raisin cake, fruit mince pie and digestif biscuits. The finish adds suggestions of pickled ginger and baking spices. Though not long, the flavours are surprisingly intense, well-proportioned and approachable without dilution. Give a freshly opened bottle thirty minutes to begin to show its best. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Some classic sherried Speysider that everyone should have tried. WF 84 last time I had, but that was in… 2006 (feeling shame here at WF Towers). Colour: gold. Nose: not that different from the 10, just cake-ier, more sherried, and rather more complex, with small herbs, a mossy side, and a large chocolate cake. Touches of yeasty porridge in the background. Fresh pumpernickel bread. Mouth: really very cake-y, malty, with raisins and some very lovely touches of spearmint. I’m also finding a delicate wood smoke, as well as the usual walnuts when we’re having a sherried malt such as this one. Goody good. Finish: rather long, and shall I dare mention Christmas cakes? And yet it’s not heavy. Comments: I just couldn’t tell you which one I like best, between the 10 and the 15. Both are top class in their categories. 46% Alc.Vol. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

...Energetic, heady, rich. Wakes up the palate and demands to be heard. The marshmallow note is uncanny and overpowers the rest of the dram at points, but overall this regains its footing, albeit with a somewhat abbreviated finish. All in, a step up from the 12 year old expression and solid value for money. - malt-review.com

An intensely flavoured and texturally gorgeous Rose that delivers fantastic value.

Drawing on Tahbilk estate plantings of Grenache and Mourvèdre the fruit for this moreish Rose is picked early to retain freshness and delicacy, with the grapes crushed and pressed with as little oxygen contact as possible to preserve the fresh fruit characters. A technique favoured in Provence is then used to increase texture and mouthfeel, by mixing the cold juice (including the pulp and solids) with nitrogen gas briefly each day over four days. The wine is then racked to produce clear juice and fermented with a specific Rosé yeast.

Produced from a blend of 68% Grenache and 32% Mourvedre it features a translucent salmon pink tinged colour and an enchanting nose that offers up delightful aromatics of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate followed by a faint whiff of wet stone. Intensely flavoured and gorgeously shaped, the palate is layered with delicious raspberry, pomegranate and musk flavours which sit over a strawberry and wet stone back drop. Showing brisk underlying acidity it finishes dry, supple and long. Fantastic value.
    Drink over the next year.

    Other Reviews…..
Vibrant musk pink hues. Nails the yin and yang brilliance that the two grapes bring to rosé - mourvèdre the black fruits, high tannin and acidity and grenache the red fruits and lively spice. Cherry, strawberry, bramble, loganberry, spice mingle easily, offset with musky florals. Plenty of dry, crisp refreshment on offer. An all-rounder at the table. Drink by 2027.

The first Yarra Valley Pinot from Munda comes from a mix of red-brown clay, deep red volcanic soils, and granite. It is a wine with an alluring and well-composed nose: crunchy cranberries, polished red cherries, wild violets and some lovely vanilla, musk stick, a touch of cardamom, and cedar. The palate is juicy and, once again, well composed on its fruit and oak profile. More apparent is that the blood orange and earthy character, with elegant, granular tannins, giving a texture that reminds me of a chestnut. Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).

Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.

Semi translucent dark red core with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exhibiting a perfumed like intensity, the nose is engulfed with dark cherry, violet, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents. Anise, brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice notes also chime in to lend further interest. Expansive, concentrated and supplely textured, rich dark cherry and strawberry fruits unfold across the palate with terrific power. Extending through the back half are complexing notions of subtle rhubarb, traces of anise, brambly cedar, dried herbs, delicate forest floor and spice. Velvet smooth tannins impart a silken feel which carries right through to a long, incredibly moreish finish. This is Rob Hall in top form.

A super-fresh if somewhat brooding nose is comprised by notes of essence of red pinot fruit, spice and lavender that really helped from being in a decanter for 30 minutes first. The succulent and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before concluding in a compact, powerful, complex and impressively persistent finish. This seems to have put on weight since I last reviewed it and I like the overall sense of harmony and balance. In sum, this is evolving nicely though I underscore that it still needs at least another 5 or so years. In a word, lovely. Try from 2027+.

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu confirms its strong showing from barrel, soaring from the glass with scents of ripe cherries, red berries, rose petals, orange rind and a deft touch of toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a charming, supple profile that makes it hard to resist. Drink 2022-2040.

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle. Drink 2023-2040.

Dominique thinks this may be THE vintage of the recent past, even at 55 hl/ha. This view may be conditioned by having just lived through making the third hot dry vintage in a row. The 2017 may be a fraction lighter in colour, but it is really haunting in its fruit, superbly balanced, medium density, a crisp tannin or two right at the back and now here comes the fruit again. I see what Dominique means – certainly if you want to drink in the medium-term future.

A markedly riper yet agreeably fresh and spicy nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its aromas of cool and pure black currant and dark cherry that are trimmed in pretty floral nuances. The middle weight flavors exhibit excellent energy and concentration while retaining a lovely sense of refinement on the powerful, focused and impressively long and slightly warm finish that is shaped by firm but fine tannins. This excellent effort should age gracefully for years. Drink through 2033+.

Lafon's finest red this year is, as usual, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu, a wine that combines the finesse of the Clos des Chênes with the power and depth of the Champans. Exhibiting a complex bouquet of cherries, smoky wild berries, rich soil tones, violets and dark chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with refined tannins and a sense of controlled power.

The 2018 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has the most intense bouquet of Dominique Lafon’s Volnays this year, intense black cherry scents intermingling with boysenberry and light cassis aromas, all delivered with the utmost detail. The palate offers black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with violets, very fine tannins and gentle grip. The silky-smooth finish fans out gloriously. Stunning. Drink 2023-2050.

Fine depth of colour. The nose from the start suggests that this is a complete wine. Plums as much as dark raspberries, with its clay based weight, a few tannins but in proportion to the fruit, just the right thread of acidity, a fabulous weighty but balanced Volnay Santenots.

From a total of 4800 bottles produced - 1440 of which were allocated to Italy - 'Raconteur' is Foursquare’s longest-aged rum from Velier to date.  The name of the new release is a tribute to two great rum raconteurs: Luca Gargano (the man behind Velier) and the late Stephen Remsberg, a great collector who passed away in December 2022. It's a Single Blended Rum assembled from a blend of rum from copper double retort pot stills and traditional twin column coffey stills. The result are two single and double-matured rums, the first was aged for 17 years in ex-bourbon barrels, while the second was initially aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon barrels, then for a further 12 years in an ex-Oloroso sherry barrel. Bottled in 2023, allocations are tiny. Act sooner than later if you are keen on continuing your collection. 61% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Review Summary: Gently spritzy and airy in it’s feel this a Prosecco with no shortage of flavour.

The Detailed review: During the 1950’s, Remigio and Amedio Boron purchased a moderate size plot of land near the commune of Pramaggiore, which in the late 1960’s became known as the ‘Lison’ DOC – one of the more unique DOCs as it crosses over both the Veneto (to the west) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (to the southeast) and in turn, as a region, grows a wide gamut of grape varieties. In their early years the winery, like many in the region, produced their Lison Classico DOCG made from the Friulano grape, along with typical styles of sparkling wines. These days, 3rd generation family members, Sabrina, Andrea, and Roberto, combined new technology with their wine making experience and grow a careful selection of grapes that work in harmony with their land such as Lison Classico (Friulano), Refosco del Peduncolo and Prosecco. As a category, it will come as no surprise that Prosecco is the most widely consumed sparkling wine on the planet. Many styles these days are made in the ‘spumante’ style offering heavily carbonated bubbles, whereas Familia Boron’s Prosecco is made in the more traditional frizzante style. Made entirely from Glera, this semi-sparkling wine carries a finer bead (due to its lower atmospheric pressure).
A light frothy mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has a delicate fine bead flowing through it. Aromas of pear and ripe apples mix with some lees and subtle lemon sherbet like notes. Delicious pear and apple fruits are delivered with ample concentration and carry an airy feel. Some sherbet and citrus characters linger underneath. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a nicely formed conclusion that shows no shortage of flavour.

Rich fruits carry a refined opulence across a medium to full bodied palate that finishes long and understated.

Awarded an MW of wine in 2020, winemaker Duane Coates is by his own admission, a 'heart over head' winemaker. Inclined to make wine from almost any interesting parcel of fruit made available to him, he tends to make accountants wince. For Duane, making great wine is not about business decisions; it’s about curiosity, passion, and a little bit of folly. His wines marry Australia’s richness of fruit with the savouriness and complexity of the old world.
Matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Flooding the nostrils are intense ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas followed by hints of dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, scorched earth, dried meat and peppered herb notes. Rich blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits carry a refined opulence across the medium to full bodied palate. Spicy vanillin cedar, traces of earth, dark chocolate and pepper elements extend across the back half. Excellent concentration with tightly knit, fine grained tannins providing a sturdy structure. A low-yielding vintage and not the finest for reds but it’s not all bad news – chardonnay is stealing the limelight. So many excellent ones, and here, another. It oscillates between flinty and fine, then builds, offering flavour and detail via winemaking (as in the creamy, nutty lees, the barrel ferment funk); it’s all here. Plenty of citrus, too. Mouth-watering acidity throughout and finishes convincingly.

This is a stunning Riesling and amazing value. It might sound like the proverbial broken record but anyone claiming to like Riesling who is not buying, drinking and cellaring these is not serious. Rob Diletti sees this as his flagship. The fruit is all from the estate, from six different blocks, aged between two and four decades. Only the first press of 450 litres/tonne is used here. A bright lemon hue, it is leaner and more elegant than the Skywalk, as expected, with notes of florals, oystershells, citrus including fresh lime and grapefruit pith, and a line of saline acidity. Focus and length are present. This is easily a ten to twenty year proposition. A wonderful Riesling and one which is must-have value. Drink 2024-2044.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2023 Chardonnay hails from a mild to cool (and dry) season in Margaret River, one that, by all accounts, will be a superb vintage for Chardonnay. On the nose here, the wine leads with lemon butter and white peach, nashi pear and green apple, with brine, cashew nuts and spring flowers. The acidity in the mouth is typically intense in young Xanadu Chardonnay—part of the legacy of the house style that eschews malolactic fermentation—and so it presents as I would expect it to, in a season already imbued with zesty natural acids. There is plenty of race and pace in this wine, but there is some creaminess, too. It will be better in a few years, I believe, although much of this cuvée will be purchased and consumed early. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2035.

The nose is very focused and mineral-driven, with aromas of lemon peel, gun smoke, white peaches and sea spray. The Detailed review: Matured for 18 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques and puncheons. Dense pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Potent black cherry and liquorice aromas are interwoven with smoked dried meat, spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Rich, densely concentrated and powerful, the full bodied palate is swamped with lush black cherry and liquorice fruits which are framed by a sturdy tannin structure. Scorched earth, black olive, dried meat, vanillin cedar and blackpepper characters lurk in the background. Slightly chewy in it’s feel, it concludes long, deeply fruited and peppery.

Review Summary: A generously fruited light to mid weight Pinot that has a fleshy feel.

The Detailed review: Moorooduc Estate, planted in 1982, was one of the first to be established on the Mornington Peninsula by Richard and Jill McIntyre. With yields of less than 2 tons per acre and the fruit 100% destemmed the resultant wine was matured in French oak with 22% being new for a period of 10 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Expressive dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb scents sail out of the glass trailed by some anise, dried herb, bramble, forest floor and spice notes. Light to medium bodied, generous dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours possess a fleshy feel. Some anise, brambly cedar, forest floor and spicy dried herb elements lie underneath. Polished yet sturdy tannins with a moderately powered conclusion.

2013 Velier Beenleigh Tropical Ageing 10 Year Old Cask Strength Australian Rum (700ml)
    Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 59%

Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Palate : Vanilla, dried apricot, kaffir lime, orange zest, cardamom, and lavender. Finish : Long and assertive. Guava, camphor, pine resin, black cherry, dark chocolate, and almond.

Kilchoman Sanaig 2024 Edition Cask Strength Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.8%

Sanaig and Machir Bay are Kilchoman’s two core products, but only the latter has had the honour of an occasional cask strength release. Prospective samples of Sanaig were floated during a 2021 Feis Isle virtual tasting. No release date was ever suggested and the label had to wait until November 2024 to finally get its own natural-strength iteration. Looking at the colour, you might think they've mistakenly filled the bottle with Loch Gorm. That's down to a high proportion of x-Oloroso sherry casks (the remaining 30% are x-Bourbon). Essentially, this release uses the same recipe as the regular Sanaig, however, we can assume casks have been cherry-picked, then bottled uncut as opposed to the regular release strength of 46% ABV. It should be a blast for Islay fans, delivering an intense combination of rich peat smoke, cinnamon sweetness and stone fruits with waves of citrus, mixed spices and dark chocolate. No outturn is stated, but the Australian allocations are likely in the hundreds, rather than the thousands. 57.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews...  the entry is bold and spicy, with an explosive mix of black pepper, chilli, nutmeg and aniseed, anticipating a palate of dark pastry, chocolate, red fruit (sour cherries, plums, blackberries), sweet liquorice, blood orange juice, pink grapefruit and carob. Fleshy and iodised smoke that envelops the flavours like Linus’ blanket. The addition of water accentuates the marine aspect, bringing sulphurous notes to the surface. The long finish is coastal and full, with a tingle of spices that accompany red fruits and citrus, liquorice, chocolate, coffee and a vegetal, sulphurous vein. This is closer to a Loch Gorm on steroids than the original, which could be seen as either a distortion of the classic Sanaig or a liberation of its nature. A matter of opinion, mine appreciates the fullness of a slightly rambunctious but sincere dram. - Lamberto Lamarina, whiskyart.blog

    Other Reviews....
Here too whiffs of petrol and phenolic character add breadth to the aromas of essence of pear, orange peel and acacia blossom. The dense, sappy and beautifully textured medium weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale. This offers excellent quality for its level and is warmly recommended. Drink through 2029+.

Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.
