Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$5499. 00Bottle$65988.00 DozenABV: 47.8%Home to one of the highest rated whiskeys in the world, and now released bi-annually, the 23 year old began as a semi-annual bottling in 2005 that would quickly sell out upon release. That changed in 2010 when it was made a permanent member on the portfolio. Distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the various age statements on offer are regarded by many as some of the finest bourbons in the world. As the oldest of the Pappy Van Winkle line up, the 23 year old is also the woodiest of the range with a slightly diminished sweetness. However bourbons of this ilk always need ample air contact to show their finer points, which was precisely Jim Murray's experience upon re-tasting it for his 2020 Whisky Bible (95 points review below). Almost unobtainable, it routinely commands big dollars.
Other reviews... The corn oils kiss and caress, the tannins barge and batter in a good cop / bad cop delivery... one of the holy grails of bourbon is to produce a consistently a 23-25 year old bourbon which is still sweet and not tannin dominated: no easy task. [this is] unquestionably drier... there are still sugars enough to give some fabulous moments on the palate. The tannins do though, still have the biggest say. In a blind taste test of whiskey labels from around the world, the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago gave the 20-year old Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve a 99 out of 100 rating... the highest mark ever awarded. It began as a rye-heavy style but it's now a wheated bourbon, making the whiskey softer, sweeter, mellower and more rounded. It remains the most-awarded of the Pappys, and is sometimes compared with top shelf cognac, helped by its slightly younger age and slightly lower proof.

An ancient Bourbon, so should be a flavour powerhouse. But this is all about understatement and complexity. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020...Amber mahogany. Rich, mature aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, leather, tea berry, coconut, and dark fruit-very complex indeed. Big, coating, soothing texture. Flavors are very mature, rounded and nicely balanced, with notes of molasses, dried fruit, cinnamon, and teaberry. It finishes long, with a very soothing demeanor.... ...This has always been my favorite Van Winkle bourbon and after this recent tasting, it remains that way. It has aspects of all of the other Van Winkle bourbons in a single package. It’s nose is by far the best out of the bunch. It proves how important a bourbon’s nose really is to the entire tasting experience. The palate features the rich fruit flavors of the 12 Year, the cinnamon of the 15 Year, and a touch less oak than the 23 Year. Incredible colour density featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Freshly crushed blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and blueberry scents are delivered with ample intensity. Notes of vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth ensue. Rich, youthfully bright and juicy, the concentrated palate is laden with blackberry, liquorice and fresh ripe blueberry fruits. Fennel, vanillin cedar and delicate peppered earth elements engage the back half. Fresh, energetic and succulent, it has a sturdy yet polished tannin structure which provides some underlying muscle. Finishes long and vividly fruited yet slightly inky in its feel.

From '75 and '98 plantings on the Springs Hill vineyard. The '24 Paralian suite, for me, is the finest to date. All killer, as they say … The quiet power in this is something to behold – a wine of gravitas and grace. It comes in a little darker of fruit this year, though not heavy with it. Dried olive, black cherry, violet, blueberry, ground coffee, a certain sultry floral and spicy feel, with an undercurrent of nori and iodine. This is a marvellous expression, with finely tooled tannins and exceptional length. Simply brilliant. Drink by 2038.

The Contours Riesling is crafted from old vines grown on the coolest slope within the Pewsey Vale Contours vineyard. Bottle aged for six years before release delivers a Riesling that’s rich and complex.
Brilliant very pale straw core with a distinct shimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Intense aromas of lime and green apple are intertwined with oily toast and wet steel notes. Hints of lemon butter and bees wax are also evident. Vivid lime, lemon and green apple fruits infused with oily toast like characters are layered across the palate with terrific concentration, drive and textural volume. Lying underneath are traces of bees wax, lemon butter and a steely minerality. Crisp acidity is delivered with pinpoint accuracy. The long, dry finish carrying a gentle waxy feel.

Another museum release riesling from the excellent Contours block of the Pewsey Vale vineyard, way up around 500m in the High Eden. A gentle mid-straw in the glass with aromas beginning to take on the complexity that we love from aged riesling. Bickford's lime cordial, citrus blossom and Christmas lily are joined by buttered brioche, washed rind cheese, pressed wildflowers, almond paste, petrichor and stone. Porcelain acidity provides clarity and cadence, and it is clear that this wine is in a great place, possibly heading to a greater one. Drink by 2040.

Ah, the wonders of Eden Valley Riesling as it just starts to enter its secondary phase. This one is beginning to show some toasty character, which you might expect with a wine that is seven years old. But it is hardly going to flip in the short term and it retains a youthful, vibrant edge highlighted by that strong mineral and lemony character that you might expect with a little bit of Eden Valley bath salts and dry talciness. Already a high degree of richness, but it’s held tight with control. Outstanding. Drink 2025-2035.

Walk into a bath house and you’ll be met with trickling water, essential oils and the feeling of calm, this too has the same effect. Lemon myrtle, lemongrass, bath salts and rainforest greens. Just like the cool sloping site. The Contours is a supreme wine from a rugged site, this brings together the poignancy of aged Riesling into a holistic white wine experience. Grilled chestnuts preserved citrus and slinky lines of thirst quenching acidity. It’s complex, textural and hella moreish. What a pleasure to sip and contemplate, and a total steal at that price. Drink now or allow it to gain even more detail with another 6-8 years in the cellar. Drink 2025-2033.

Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines.Classic Pewsey Vale Riesling at the top of it’s game.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with green tinted edges. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromas jump out of the glass trailed by distinct chalky talc, green apple and mineral notes. Scrumptious lime and citrus fruits fill the mouth carrying with them plenty of textural volume. Crunchy acidity with orange rind, green apple, chalky talc and subtle steely mineral elements lining the back half. The finish, long and racy.

What a beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling is this estate Pewsey Vale wine. The nose is intense lemon with a minerally bath salts character, while the palate has that lemon rind edginess, balancing the deeply intense, linear and focused fruit that emerges from this high-altitude block. It retains a degree of tension with a slightly talcy character, and the finish is long and fine. Excellent wine. Drink 2025-2037.

The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and red apple skin show plenty of elevation out of the glass with hints of lime, fresh herbs and wet stone also evident. Delicious pear, lime and red apple skin flavours are delivered with ample concentration over a back drop of fresh herb infusions and slatey mineral elements. Crisp acidity with a river stone like feel to the long dry finish.

Owner and manager of Pierro Estate, Dr Mike Peterkin, has a viticultural pedigree second to none. Besides making one of Margaret River's and Australia’s best Chardonnays, Mike also produced the first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend in Australia.
Fermented in French barriques, the wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Both complex and captivating, the nose features an elevated aromatic profile of white peach, nectarine and citrus infused with gun flint married to biscuity oak, faint nougat, delicate dried honey and spice. Rich and incredibly powerful yet possessing wonderful finesse, the medium weighted palate is layered with mouth filling white peach, pear and nectarine fruits. Infusions of gun flint, citrusy nougat, subtle dried honey, mealy roasted almond like characters, traces of crème brulee and spice lend further sophistication to what is a kaleidoscopic flavour experience. Generous creamy like textural feel counterpointed by a delightful underlying freshness. Finishes exceptionally long with a Burgundian like refinement.

From one of Margaret River’s great chardonnay producers, this is yet another brilliant example of the style that has made Pierro so admired. You wouldn’t guess it came from a warm year—it’s delicate and fine, with a pristine brightness. The nose shows light grapefruit, citrus, a touch of butterscotch, and a subtle mealy note in the background. The palate has real zing, with lively, pristine acidity driving through to a sustained finish. A chalky, minerally edge adds to the linear feel and precision. Another outstanding Pierro chardonnay.

Plantation Grande Reserve Rum (700ml)BARBADOSReduced from $74.99$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40%Other reviews... part of the Signature blends which include the Barbados 5, the XO, Grand Anejo and Xaymaca — these are what one might infer are entry level rums for the curious (to call them ‘premium’ would be a stretch). They are neither bartenders’ mixing staples like the Three Star, OFTD or Original Dark, nor expensive limited editions like the upscale Extreme, Single Cask or Vintage series, and exist in a kind of everyman’s universe where “reasonableness” is the watchword. It goes down easy without reaching and that may be the key observation. Overall, it’s a relatively simple rum compared to others I’ve had (including some from Plantation themselves), yet a rum one can, with care and lowered expectations, have neat without too many issues. To be honest, I thought the rum was better than it had a right to be considering the sweetening Plantation is known for... For someone now getting into rum, it’s serviceable and they could use it as a stepping stone to get more into the field, though for getting into the Barbados style it’s useless, so forget that aspect. Those with more experience can use it as a bellwether for what to look for in Plantation’s successively more upscale (and expensive) offerings; and for those who’re really into rums, well, there’s not much to say to them, since they already know all there is to know. - thelonecaner.com
... From just before Plantation became Planteray, for reasons that remain a little unclear to us—though seemingly a bit on the ‘woke’ side. We’ve nothing against wokism, of course, but we do rather like balance in all things and tend to think anything excessive becomes trivial. ‘Does ‘habitation’ still work by the way? Right then, shall we have a taste?... This must be from W.I.R.D., owned by the same fine folks. Colour: white wine. Nose: cooked sugar verging on ‘petit boulé’, sugarcane syrup and a generous splash of orgeat, with a few fluttering florals hovering about—white clover in particular, adding a faint pastoral lift. Mouth: pleasant at first, but the sweetness does rather take over. Think Malibu laced with molasses honey and sweet woodruff cordial. Finish: medium in length, gentle and sugary, with no real parting bite. Comments: clearly meant to be served over a good handful of ice, ideally dragged down to 8°C or so. Notes from the producers... Color : Gold. Nose : Intense, it starts on molasses, pear and varnish. It then becomes fruitier and spicier on apple, banana and gooseberry, also nutmeg and vanilla with a hint of smoke. Palate : Rich and round, it follows the nose with vanilla fudge, honey, ginger and fruity notes of prune and coconut. Finish : Very long on dried banana, bourbon and allspice. Empty glass : Molasses, oak and allspice.

Rich, intensely flavoured and possessing an expansive peacocks tail and power wave, the highly moreish palate is supplely decorated with red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours. Infusions of fresh herbs, rhubarb, forest floor and spicy cedar like characters lie underneath. Possessing ample freshness and polished tannins it finishes exceptionally long and uber delicious.

Coal River Valley pinot noir made by Samantha Connew. A very pretty bright ruby in the glass with aromas of amaro and blossom-flecked red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits underscored with hints of spice, Peking duck, leaf litter, dried citrus rind, struck flint and earth. It smells gorgeous, and the palate follows up with smallgoods and undergrowth and mountain herb tones, finishing long with detail, sapid acidity and powdery tannins – it's a wonderful release. The family behind Villa Le Corti, the Corsini Family, has an amazing history as winemakers that dates back to the 13th century making it one of the oldest Estates in Tuscany. Current custodian of the Corsini Empire is 22nd generation Duccio Corsini.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Delightful aromatics of red currant and red cherry infused with rose petals show wonderful intensity out of the glass complimented by some red liquorice, Mediterranean herb, spicy cedar and earth notes. A rich chorus of ripe red currant, red liquorice and red cherry fruits unravel across the mid weighted palate. Finessed and polished it has seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins and a beautiful underlying freshness. Terrific length with infusions of fresh Mediterranean herbs, earth and spicy cedar extending through what is a long sweeping finish.

Cherry, blueberry and cassis are presented in clear tones, as promised by this excellent vintage. There are lighter background notes of grilled rosemary and blue flower. This Riserva knocks it out of the park with fresh acidity and general brightness. Drink 2024-2036.

Made as a "Rose de presse" (juice straight off the press), the grapes are pressed rather than macerated (as is the case in a "Rose de Saignee").
Chateau Puech Haut employ Grenache and Cinsault for this wine, which is fermented in thermo regulated stainless steel over twenty days to increase flavour intensity.Gorgeously textured and wonderfully intense with a long super moreish finish.
Very pale salmon pink tinged colour. Delighting the olfactory senses are fragrant aromas of peach, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate which mix with whiffs of musk and wet stone. Gorgeously textured with a supple feel, and wonderfully intense, the palate is layered with peach, raspberry, strawberry and musk flavours. Stony back drop with flashes of pomegranate also making an appearance. Fresh acidity with a long slippery finish that makes a second glass impossible to resist. Blissful Summer drinking.

The competition awarded Redbreast 12 an impressive 98 points, narrowly beating other competitors from Australia, South Africa, Denmark, India, Taiwan and Switzerland, among many others.
The judges said: “It starts with a gorgeous nose, a fantastic composition of aromas all complementing each other. Think of roasted coffee, toffee apples, malt and warm Christmas spices. The palate is bold but very elegant with a nice balance and all in order to a great finale with dried fruits, candied oranges and sweet spices.”
For decades, serious whiskey drinkers drank Irish "blended" whiskey, mixing it with cola or adding a dash to coffee. But, John Hansell, editor and publisher of Malt Advocate magazine, says that's changing. "The line between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky has become blurred," says Hansell, since Irish whiskey companies like Bushmills and Jameson have expanded their range to include deluxe whiskies from aged blends to pure pot stills and their own brand of single malts. "The top Irish whiskeys are just as good as many single-malt scotches. It's too bad more people aren't aware of how complex some of these whiskeys have become."
Here's a case in point. From Irish Distillers Ltd, Redbreast is a 'Single' unblended, pure pot still Irish whiskey made with malted and unmalted barley which has been triple distilled. Our tasting found powerful, sensuous aromatics, at first reminiscent of creaming soda then vanilla wafer and sweet cereals enter giving this a Bourbon slant. The entry is soft and light. Mid palate turns deliciously creamy with semi-sweet, toasty cereals and brandy cream sauce flavours superbly counterpointed by spicy, drying oak. Finishes crisp and dry with terrific length as the vanilla wafer biscuit again emerges followed by a late creme-caramel fade. An Irish with soul and distinctive style, this also offers a mouthfeel that’s uncommon. Its lightness of body combined with depth of flavour make for a terrific aperitif. 40% Alc./Vol.

Since it’s establishment in 2009, winemaker John Hughes has in a very short period of time established RieslingFreak as one of the country's preeminent producers of the variety. Wine critic Mike Bennie describing it as ‘the definitive Riesling project in Australia.’ The 2025 vintage was one of meagre yields due to frost and lack of rainfall, however, the quality was remarkable delivering wines with terrific intensity of flavour and electric acidity.
Brilliant water like colour with green tinged edges. Intense lime and citrus scents burst out of the glass followed by some green apple, orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated and powerful yet tightly wound, the zippy palate is flooded with lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which are sculptured by crisp, steely acidity. Subtle green apple, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements linger through the long, tense and zingy finish.

Produced with a 17% whole bunch component and matured in French oak hogsheads (17% new) for 6 months, this is a great value Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Semi translucent red to dark red colour with a light red hue. Sailing through the nostrils with a perfumed like intensity are violet, red cherry and winter strawberry aromas followed by hints of fresh herbs, anise and forest floor. Delicious cherry and strawberry fruits decorate the palate and carry with them a supple textural feel. Some delicate anise, spicy dried herb and forest floor elements lie underneath. Excellent power and concentration with polished tannins and a long moreish finish.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the bottle was a ripe, confectionery-like aroma that filled the room. After a bit of breathing, red cherry, strawberry, plum and black tea came forth to round out the delightful nose, with some stemminess obvious once you inspected the wine a bit closer. It had a juicy, salivating quality to it that made it very easy to drink up the bright, silky liquid, and it was even a touch better on the second night. Like the Chardonnay, it’s just as nice as a sipper or with food.

The long finish includes flavors of caramel, pipe tobacco, cedar and roasted nuts."

Today the 'La Nacional' company has an extensive range of products which account for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. Their rums marketed under the Ron Zacapa label stand out for two reasons: Instead of molasses, they're produced using sugarcane honey (fresh sugarcane juice condensed and filtered). Secondly, the rums are distilled at sea-level but aged in the town of Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 2300 metres.
Zacapa's top shelf blend of 6-25 year old rums is an exemplary example of the spirit that goes through a similar solera aging process to the popular Solera 23 with one notable exception: after a spell in ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the final blend is finished in French oak casks previously used to age cognac (befitting of the XO moniker, but relatively meaningless in the rum world). It feels like a very old cognac or brandy on the nose with an almost ethereal lift of sticky date, dark chocolate, coffee bean and light golden syrup. The palate delights the senses with a fabulous rush of dates, molasses cake, mocha, honey, super-aged muscat and perfectly balanced spirit. The finish is drying and XO cognac-like. Tasting like a good proportion of seriously old material is in the mix, this is the epitome of elegance in rum with luxe presentation to match. 40% Alc./Vol.

...This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. The production process is a slow and careful one that can take six to eight weeks. Made in the pure Ruinart tradition exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs reflects perfect harmony. Its striking luminosity is further enhanced by the clear glass bottle, a replica from an 18th Century model.
Good white creamy mousse with pale gold base wine colour and a very fine bead displaying excellent persistence. The nose delivers a superb complex sniff with a distinct yeasty top note followed by aromas of baked bread, brioche, cashew and toast. The palate is quite rich for a Blanc de Blancs displaying very refined flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and cashew with a light toast overlay. Creamy texture with excellent length. Clean crisp dry finish with long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast less and cashew.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Delightful nose with aromas of white peach, nectarine, dried honey and biscuity nougat sailing from the glass with impressive intensity. Spicy cashew and faint struck match stick notes also chime in. The terrifically concentrated and gorgeously shaped palate features fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits over a back drop of dried honey, cashew, biscuity nougat and spice. Superb drive with pin point fresh acidity lending energy to the long texturally expansive finish.

It's charming in its glide and gloss to texture, a little bite of freshness through the finish. The perfume and palate match well in green pear, light passionfruit and guava notes, pretty citrus lift and a faint riff of green herbs. A good intensity and concentration of flavour. It's pretty and pitch perfect; nails the variety and has a sense of upfront charm. Drink by 2027.

Winemaking is undertaken by the talented Mark Hunter from Sanguine Estate and maturation takes place in French oak barriques for a period of 18 months.
Dense, powerful Heathcote Shiraz with lashings of black fruit framed by muscular tannins.
Opens with spectacular colour density featuring a super saturated pitch black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate fill the nostrils with spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and dense the full bodied palate is engulfed with succulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which are framed by a muscular tannin structure. Relatively stern yet opulent in it’s feel, earth, spicy vanillin cedar, subtle dark chocolate and blackpepper elements lend further nuance. Deep and powerful it finishes long and juicy yet robust.

Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, as with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit. This edition was matured in a first-fill sherry butt. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Always these very affordable series from Signatory, with that heavily worked sherry that perhaps doesn’t always let the character of the distillate shine through, but does its job very, very well. Colour: full gold. Nose: ah this is pretty, there's a touch of exhaust fumes (not pleasant in the street but sometimes rather charming in your glass), then green walnuts, cherry stalks, and peach leaves. A few hints of satay sauce, followed by pear cake. With water: marked saponification but it fades quickly, then comes a mix of Indian spices, think tandoori seasoning. Mouth (neat): surprising, on mustard, pepper, tar and dark chocolate, quite the unusual trio. With water: this time, beyond the Indian spices, there's candied ginger and fir bud. Really very unusual. Finish: long, and there's even a flavour of poppadums at the end. Comments: very hard to categorise, this isn't your typical sherry cask. A dedicated blend filler, North British never bottle whisky under their own label, so few would have had the opportunity to taste it on its own. This one's apparently not as extreme as many others in the 100 Proof series and pretty young for a grain, but does its job well - no doubt due to the injection of added flavour from the first and second fill oloroso sherry butts. Some bourbon barrels are also in the mix. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A mix of heavy Wedderburn and medium bodied Plummer pot-still distillates, aged for up to 3 years and bottled at a potent strength. The Smith & Cross brand is steeped in tradition, both in terms of history and character. The name goes back to 1788, referencing an English trading company that was importing vast quantities of rum and sugar from Jamaica to the UK. The rum itself is described as "old fashioned", pre-dating the trend for sweetened styles that's so prevalent today. Hampden Estate's stills are famous for delivering funky notes like caramelised banana, tropical fruit and a complexing earthiness. Their rums are typically absent of chill filtration, excess dilution or added sugar. Hence, this is what you might call 'old-school' rum. It's exotic flavour profile and punchy strength have made it a bartender's favourite for Tiki cocktails, but you can also showcase its high esters in a classic Daiquiri or Mai Tai. The Kingston Negroni is a contemporary alternative, where Smith & Cross' baking spice notes mingle with red vermouth, while the rum's sweet molasses is balanced by the gentian-forward red bitters. In a similar vein, stir Cocchi Vermouth di Torino with Smith & Cross, a little maraschino and orange bitters and you have a Martinez with a genuine reggae beat!

...Smith & Cross is definitely not the sweeter newer style of rum which have been more prevalent since the 50’s and 60’s. It is no Ron Zacapa or Diplomatico. It is a million miles away from that. It is in many ways like Ronseal – it does exactly what it say on the tin (bottle). Smith & Cross make no allusions or false claims about their product. As a rum to recommend it's a difficult one you either like dunder heavy Jamaican rum or you don’t! I’ve had around 100ml of the stuff during this review and I can certainly feel it! The ABV obviously attributes to this! This is a good rum – well made and constructed and has no pretences about being anything other than an old fashioned hard hitting Jamaican pot still. The vineyards of the Barossa are regularly buffeted by cooling Westerly winds creating an ideal temperature range in which to slowly ripen Shiraz.
The 2022 Zephyrus is a blend of 10 different Shiraz parcels located throughout a wide range of vineyard sites within the cooler climate Eden Valley (44%) and warmer Barossa Valley (56%) regions. The vines are aged between 25-60 years old. Each parcel of fruit was fermented with varying levels of whole-bunch fruit clusters (between 10% to 35%). Maturation took place in a mix of new (35%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads for a period of 12 months.Rich, sumptuous and undeniably powerful with lavish layers of fruit carrying a luxurious feel.

Intoxicating scents of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum waft out of the glass complimented by some subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, mocha and peppered earth notes. Rich, plush and concentrated, the moreish palate has an opulent coating of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Vanillin cedar, spicy fennel, subtle earthy mocha and pepper characters lend further interest. Boasting magnificent power and depth it has a velvety yet underlying sturdy tannin structure. Concludes exceptionally long and sumptuously rich yet retains a sense of refinement.

Fruit was sourced from the Nuriootpa, Light Pass and Moppa sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged 80 plus years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 45% were new for a period of 18 months.Dense, concentrated and velvety, this is top line Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.

The all-Bourbon matured 18 year old makes a return to our shelves with the annual 2024 edition just landed. The last time Serge Valentin from whiskyfun tasted this expression was back in 2020. As noted from his most recent tasting below, these bottlings seem to be getting better and better. The producers note honeyed granola, fruit gums, pear drops and tropical fruits. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A freshly bottled edition, August 2024. A sign of the times, you’ll currently find Springbank 18 priced anywhere between €350 and €750 from online retailers, or from €250 on eBay. Of course, this doesn’t change the quality of the liquid one bit. The last one we tasted was the 2020 edition, very good (WF 86) but a far cry from our favourite, the 10-year-old (WF 91 last time) or the younger Local Barleys (also 91). And it's far superior to the ‘Red’, about which we’ll remain silent. Colour: straw. Nose: surprising, heading in the direction of the 10-year-old, with plenty of wet chalk, raw wool, sourdough, aspirin tablets, even bandages, followed by lemon zest, paraffin, a hint of seawater, and traces of tar. This is riiiight up my alley. Mouth: oilier and saltier on the palate, with peat, ashes, a touch of green apple liqueur, and that persistent wet chalk that’s a bit reminiscent of ‘natural’ champagnes. A lovely green pepper then appears, accompanied by small bits of candied lemon, which I find particularly ‘Springbank’. Finish: long, saline, peppery, with fine bitterness and ash, and then paraffined lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: well, either Springbank 18 is evolving, or it’s me. On the nose very much determined by the bourbon barrel: Ripe yellow fruit, vanilla and flower meadow. Accompanied by very subtle smoke. A wonderfully complex nose. Lots of bright yellow fruits are again present on the tongue. There is also a spicy eucalyptus note and plenty of complexity. A wonderful whisky. Springbank and 100% bourbon simply work brilliantly. Notes from the producers... Nose: Tropical fruits are at the forefront in notes of papaya and pineapple. There is a malty, dried barley note, with vanilla and custard creams. Palate: Notes of golden syrup and honeyed granola emerge on the palate, along with fruit gums, pear drops and butter icing. Finish: The tropical fruits carry through to the finish, with the addition of a herbaceous, gorse note and a touch of sea salt.

Quite simply, the distillery has always had a relatively low output. Patchy supply has been an issue for quite a number of years, but that's slowly changing. Production has increased marginally, but it will be quite some time before there's sufficient age stated stock is available to meet year-round global demand. In the meantime, allocations from the official Australian importer remain negligible. Just landed is another tiny instalment of the 15 year old, this time matured in Oloroso sherry casks. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... The issue for me remains the same: it’s nearly impossible to beat the 10-year-old, even more so in terms of quality/price ratio. In short, the 15 is sold at twice the price of the 10. This is the 2024 release in our glass—I imagine the 2025 version is already in the pipeline. Colour: gold. Nose: a restrained sherry greets us, with the distillate in full command of itself, brimming with Springbankness. Damp plaster, fresh concrete, low tide, paint pot, lemon, menthol, old ointments, and not the slightest trace of sulphur this time. We found a bit in an earlier version, but that was back in 2017. Mouth: less luminous than the 10 OB, with more leather and simply more sherry (old walnuts) as well as tobacco, yet the brininess is spot-on, before things shift more towards bitter oranges rather than lemons. Finish: long, oily, with a touch of curry and very peppery olive oil. Comments: excellent, as expected, but as the old ad used to say, I wouldn’t trade two bottles of the 15 for one of the 10. Made in Latvia according to traditional Russian methods following the original 1938 wheat and rye-based recipe, the distillery triple filters the spirit through birch charcoal and quartz sands before blending it with pure spring water. Popular for its quality and slightly sweeter, oily taste and texture, after nearly eighty years of success, the brand introduced this new contemporary presentation in 2023, dropping the Soviet style label which featured Moscow's famous Moscova Hotel.

An intriguing NAS whisky from the ever-consistent Hakushu distillery. The Distiller's Reserve combines young, lightly peated and older, heavily peated malts rumoured to be up to eighteen years in age. Like it or not, these NAS releases have been crucial for the ongoing presence of Japanese distilleries on the shelves, allowing continued market access by marrying dwindling older barrels with younger stock coming online. Executed by expert blenders, the results can be distinctive and sometimes outstanding. If mixing is more your thing, this is said to make a fantastic Highball.
Other reviews... On smelling the whisky, I found it had a grassy scent that struck me as different to other Japanese whiskies I’ve tasted in the past. After tasting the drink, I picked up flavours of mint, cucumber and fruit. Each flavour unfurled on my tongue, building up slowly over time. I also enjoyed the fact that the Distiller’s Reserve was so easy to drink. It had a smooth quality that chimed well with the ice in my glass. Whereas some whiskies leave behind a fiery aftertaste, the Hakushu went down as easily as a bottle of Peroni. Another important note was the clean sensation. I found the drink gave my palate a sense of freshness that I’ve not experienced before with whisky. Retasted Nov 2016... Subtle, with light wafts of fresh sawn American oak, gobstopper and stewed pear. Air contact draws out hints of granita biscuit. More presence in the mouth than the nose suggests with a nicely rounded, fresh delivery that's peppermint lozenge-like followed by cool mint confectionery melting in the aftertaste. First tasted 2013 Pale straw gold colour. Moderately intense, grassy and mildly fruity aromatics combine with a malty-vanilla base and a soft, round, light to medium weighted delivery with cereal and vanilla flavours, nicely balanced alongside the gently buzzing spices that carry well into the aftertaste. Established in 1860 and purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk has the world’s largest single holding of Marsanne, a grape that plays a major role in some of the worlds most famed white wines, those of Hermitage in Northern Rhone.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Fresh peach and lime aromas jump out of the glass complimented by some floral honeysuckle, apple skin and subtle spicy bees wax notes. On the palate delicious peach and red apple skin flavours meld into a back drop of lime, delicate honeysuckle and stony mineral elements. Supple in its feel it possesses solid concentration and vibrant underlying acidity. Dry, refreshing finish.

Campbell Mattinson – The Wine Front
One of the top value Aussie whites going – year in, year out. It is unwooded and so the purity of varietal expression is keen, with the prettiest of spring florals on display and a brightness of citrus that sparks the palate. Honeysuckle, citrus blossom and acacia work with citrus, quince, green apple and a lemon sorbet tang to ignite the tastebuds, hand in hand with juicy acidity. A mid-palate creaminess opens up the food-matching possibilities. I'm thinking lobster meunière. As for ageing? It's up for a decade or more. Drink by 2038.

Attractive pear and strawberry aromas intermingle with raspberry, brioche and subtle lees notes. Crisp and stimulating, the palate has a savoury, flavour packed profile of pear, strawberry and raspberry fruits which meld into a brioche, yeast lees and baked bread background. Lively acidity with a long, very dry finish that has a slightly chalky feel to it.

Teusner’s Bilmore Shiraz is sourced from vineyards along the western ridge of the valley floor, an area stretching south of Seppeltsfield Road, around the back of the golf club at Rowland Flat and then on through the parish of Gomersal that overlooks the southern township of Lyndoch. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft and round textures that are dangerously drinkable. For the Bilmore Shiraz Kym Teusner puts the emphasis on Barossa’s trademark luxurious fruit using only older, seasoned barrels to mature the wine for a period of around 12 months.

'The Irishman' is a brand from the same company behind the award winning 'Writer's Tears' Irish whiskeys. This is a triple-distilled expression aged in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks for a minimum of ten years. An attractive spicy fruit-cake integration into what is otherwise, a typical pot still profile. Air contact draws out a spirity, brittle edge to the malt. Third pass finds the intensity drop, revealing light orchard fruits, vanilla cream biscuits and slight caramel. Light-weighted, but the oils add body to what is a distinctive Irish: Sherried-vanilla meets a chocolate box of fruity cocoa in the aftertaste. Quaffable straight, but adding ice makes a noticeable difference to the texture. 40% Alc./Vol. [Batch 1916/2016]

Each bottling is a combination of triple distilled whiskey matured in oloroso sherry and bourbon casks. The nose is bright with vanilla icing, butterscotch, and dried peach. The taste is quite active, with honey, cinnamon, gingerbread, ground almond, and dark chocolate. It went on to become the world’s number one selling single malt brand, now with a triune of labels (the others being Glen Ord and Dufftown). A typically a soft and creamy whiskey – hence this year’s title - here you also get to experience Glendullan at full cask strength, with part of the maturation in French oak casks that previously contained White Burgundy (Chardonnay). Tasting from a 20ml sample yielded notes of digestif biscuits, delicate orchard fruit juiciness and drying oak - a simple yet effective combination that equates to a broad appeal sipper. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Green apple flesh and light honey on the nose, but it’s mild and delicate and takes time to open up, adding gentle floral notes, Bartlett pear, and white pepper. Caramel apple slices, pepper, white chocolate, grapefruit, white grape, and hints of dried banana and caramel chocolate round out a smooth tasting experience, but this one is at its best with a little water. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

After visiting the Alsace region in the late 1990’s where Riesling and Pinot Gris grow side by side, it seemed logical to Tim Adams that if Clare Valley had the conditions to produce world class Rieslings, it could also make quality Pinot Gris. The first vines were subsequently planted in the Tim Adams Ladera vineyard and today their Pinot Gris is one of the country's most popular.
Brilliant pear skin tinged colour with a watery hue. Showing intense aromatics, the nose is filled with pear, red apple skin, quince and rose water scents. Some musk and spice notes are also evident. Mouth filling flavours of pear, red apple, lychee and musk carry excellent shape. Crisp acidity with a dash of spice shining through the long, concentrated and energetic finish.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
