Janneau VSOP Grand Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCE$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%"Very superior quality, old and pale" is the precise translation for this category, a term hailing from traditional Anglo-Saxon traders. Armagnac regulations stipulate that a VSOP brandy is made from a blend of eaux-de-vie aged for at least four years in oak. In practice, the Armagnac houses often use much older stocks as they make for a richer experience. In this case, spirits up to 20 years old were drawn from French oak casks stored in Janneau's ancient cellars. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Sweet aromas of vanilla bean and oak tinged with orange peel lead the nose. Oak also leads the palate, balancing between tannic dryness and richer vanilla, winding into a spiced finish dusted with cocoa powder. 91 points - winenethusiast.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Fig and honey aromas, oaky and tannic. Hints of leather and caramel. Palate: Persistent impression of toasted golden raisins and spices. Notes of fruit jelly.

Janneau XO Grand Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCEReduced from $125.00$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, recognised since the Middle Ages for its therapeutic properties. It came into its own in the 15th century, with trade peaking in the 1800s. The region's vineyards were subsequently destroyed by phylloxera, only to be replanted at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1909 a decree was issued under the presidency of a local boy, President Fallières, delimiting the region permitted to produce the brandy, finally defining the Armagnac Appellation Contrôlée and its three regions in 1936.
At Janneau, the oldest of the great Armagnac houses, the spirit is distilled in two different ways: "Armagnacais" (single, continuous distillation) and "Double Distillation" which involves pot stills. In the latter, wine flows from a vat to the first still acting as the cooling agent and allowing the vapours to condense. This first product is called "brouillis" and is distilled again, however the liquid at the very beginning and end of the process (called the "head & tail") is left out as it contains some impurities. Only the heart – that part which achieves the desired quality – is kept. The freshly distilled Armagnac is clear, decidedly fruity with occasional plum, green apple and vanilla notes.
The XO is the brand's flagship expression, blending Baco and Ugni Blanc eaux-de-vie from Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze. While the youngest liquid in the composition is ten years old, others have been resting in oak for more than three decades. Expect aromas of candied plum, reine-claude plum, oak and red fruits and intense but well-balanced flavours hinting at oak, quince and sour cherries with a spicy finish. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Rich, comforting caramel and toffee aromas warm the nose. The palate is a bit lighter than the aromas suggest but still rewards with rounded vanilla, cocoa and espresso, fading into nutmeg and mouthwatering lemon peel brightness. 94 points - wineenthusiast.com

Janneau 18 Year Old Grand Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCE$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 43%Distilled from Ugni Blanc grapes sourced from Ténarèze. The youngest eaux-de-vie in the blend is at least 18 years old.
Other reviews... This baby was integrally double-distilled in one set of stills. It’s 100% ugni blanc. Oh and it’s got a nice age statement instead of some very woolly name. Like Grand Prestige Of The Mousquetaires Du Roy. Whatever… Colour: deep gold. Nose: another category for sure. Lovely tropical fruits (papayas covered with honey and nectars) plus ripe peaches and fresh liquorice, then a little custard, tobacco, and sandalwood. Lovely freshness. Mouth: it’s still got young Armagnac’s grittiness, but that’s totally an asset here. Liquorice, black chocolate, orange blossom water, baklavas, more tinned peaches, and quite curiously, a spoonful of smoked tea. Finish: this is where it loses points, it’s a tad too grassy and drying. Lack a little, shall we say vibrancy? A wee touch of sugar, don’t know where that’s coming from. Comments: not perfect but I think it’s very good, very solid middle-aged Armagnac. And hey, it comes with an age statement (in general, and just like in Scotland, NAS-ers always try to make you believe that their make is older than it actually is). 80 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Colour: Beautiful brown copper reflections. Nose: Aromas of dry fruits with a dominance of walnuts and hazelnuts, balanced by floral aromas. Palate: Frank attack, rich and supple tannins. Persistent flavour of liquorice.

Janneau 25 Year Old Grand Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCE$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 43%Yet another offer from Janneau that's likely to incite equal degrees of temptation and anticipation. This time it opens a door to access the kind of well-aged spirits associated with high rollers, cigar aficionados and otherwise certified brandy hedonists. Different from the younger Janneau expressions, the heavier oak input is counterpointed by dense dried fruit characteristics and wrapped up in softer textures, approaching an almost seamless spirit/wood/fruit balance. The youngest element in the blend is 25 years old, with all of the eaux de vie being Ugni Blanc based, sourced from Tenereze.
Gold Medal – 96 points. IWSC – International Wine & Spirits Competition 2021
Notes from the producers... Colour: Clear copper hues. Nose: Delicious combination of dry fruits and resinous-tree fruits. Palate: Unique sensory experience, complex woody and spicy while still sweet, velvety and never aggressive. Exceptionally long finale.

2024 Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock ShirazHeathcote, Victoria, AUSTRALIAReduced from $95.00$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 15 Years (2025-2040)ABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkBold, rich and sumptuous with classic Jasper Hill structure and a long energetic finish.
Georgia’s Paddock contains twelve hectares of Shiraz resulting in an average yield of about three tonnes per hectare. Planted on its own roots in 1975/76 on basaltic rock from the Cambrian period at an altitude of 320 meters. The dry-grown vines here have to rely on natural rainfall only, producing fruit with the immense concentration that the winery is known for.
Magnificent depth of colour featuring a saturated inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Wafting through the nostrils with great authority are aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum followed by spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Bold, rich and sumptuous, the sizeable palate manages to retain remarkable underlying freshness. Opulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and ripe blueberry fruits engage every corner of the mouth, showing outstanding concentration and drive. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth, fennel and pepper elements the undercard. Firmly built yet perfectly integrated tannin structure. Concludes exceptionally long and energetic with lashings of ripe fruit.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

Here is a first-rate lesson on soils and what they contribute to wine. Georgia hails from red, iron-oxide–rich, ancient Cambrian soils that have brought the most astonishing natural balance in '24. The boldness we associate with Georgia is there, but so too a well-delivered fineness of expression that seems to belie the 15.5% abv. The fruit is black and ripe, the spices soar, the oak is well integrated and a ferrous minerality adds a brightness and spark to everything. The tannins are firm but still welcoming, and it just gels so beautifully, so resoundingly. Drink by 2042.

Jeni Port – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThis is a great bottling of this famed central Victorian icon. Layers of black and blue fruits intertwine with a mineral-edged undertone, showing aromas of graphite, ferric earth, spices, violets, blackberries and licorice. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a fine backbone of acidity and almost silken tannins. An excellent wine that balances fruit, earth and vineyard character, all pulled together with a high level of polish. Excellent. Drink or hold.

In 2003 he launched John Duval Wines and wasted no time sourcing some of South Australia's finest fruit. “After 35 years in the business, I know who the best growers are,” comments Duval. Today, John is joined by his son Tim who assists with both winemaking and marketing.
2022 was a standout season in Barossa vintage with mild harvest conditions allowing for even flavour accumulation and vibrant aromatics and acidity. Fruit was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley districts, the final blend being made from 85% Barossa Valley and 15% Eden Valley fruit. Maturation took place in French oak (28% new) for a period of 15 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas engulf the nostrils complimented by vanillin oak, dark chocolate, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich and seductive yet terrifically refined, the medium to full bodied palate has a gorgeous layer of blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruit flowing across it. Plush in its feel it has seamlessly integrated, velvety tannins and possesses an understated power. Spicy vanillin oak, earthy mocha and pepper elements ensue. Velvety opulence speaks from the moment this hits your tongue until the last drop disappears. It’s a luxurious take on the grandeur of fit, medium-bodied Shiraz, putting plush red berry characteristics on a pedestal, encasing them gently in oak and fine-gain tannin, then allowing them to saunter gracefully down the long catwalk before sashaying out the exit curtain. Bravo! Further ageing will only enhance its beauty. Drink 2024-2038.

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Colleccion Extra Anejo 100% Agave Tequila (700ml) - 38%Jalisco, MEXICO$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 38%First released in 1995 to celebrate the company's 200th birthday, José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia pioneered the category of extended age Tequila. Matured for a minimum of two years in a combination of American and French oak barrels, some of the reserve components are up to thirty years old. The tequila itself which has been described as "rich and brandy-like" doesn't change much from year to year. And just as consistency has become its hallmark, so too has been its high praise. What does change annually is the packaging, with a different Mexican artist making each release a collector’s item.
In 2023 the box has been designed by artists Rolando Flores and Gabriel Cázares of the Mexico-based Tercerunquinto Collective. The custom art titled “Structuring a Landscape”, features a geometric abstraction of the landscape of Jalisco.
[2017 edition tasted from a 20ml sample] Pale copper gold. The bouquet combines blanco-like vibrancy with the kind of depth you'd expect from XO cognac - brine, charred capsicum, smoldering eucalyptus, beeswax, vanilla and menthol... with air contact, it also presents a drier, woody aspect including cigar box, cedar and white pepper. Likewise the silky delivery matches sappy agave and butter menthol lozenge-like flavours against drying astringency. It's delicate and somewhat fleeting through the finish, trailing off with black tea, potpourri, white pepper, hints of grilled pineapple, vanilla and trace beeswax. The overall effect strikes a fine balance between young and old. [40% Alc./Vol. tasted]

Isle of Jura 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Isle of Jura, SCOTLANDReduced from $169.99$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 44%Other reviews... There is an outlandish outbreak of massive flavour on delivery, both the malt and fruit almost shrill in their proclamations of intent. This is high juiciness in excelsis, the sugars crisp and full of grist and Dmaerara. And on the finish a slight chocolate note hovers, but then a degree of sulphur drifts in... as threatened by the nose.... This has so many beautiful moments. But... 85.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2014
Jura has introduced a new house style of ‘sweetness and smoke,’ and this spent 18 years in bourbon barrels, with a finish in red wine casks. Malt, peach blossom, raspberries, vanilla, and dark chocolate on the nose. The palate offers red berries, more chocolate, cloves, and peat. Dry red wine notes in the finish, with fruity spices and black pepper. 44% Alc./Vol. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Fall 2018)
Imagine I haven’t tried the 18 since… Oh my, 2007! But Jura was weak back then, really. Some nasty bottlings, not all of them, but there. Now this newer expression was finished in some Bordeaux red, most sadly (not STR), but you never know, this little juice may have escaped the mighty cabernety army. Which, by the way, I just love – In my wine glass. Colour: golden amber. Nose: some earth, peonies, blood oranges marmalade, heather honey, candied cherries, leather and ginger, more earth, wallflowers, pecan pie… I have to say this is a fine, rather rich and yet pretty elegant nose. But don’t we all know that silly wine finishings usually rather fail… on the palate? Mouth: nah, they know what they’re doing. This is not my preferred style at all, and we’re rather finding more café latte plus these dusty and honeyed sides (both at the same time), but otherwise except a drying cardboard and coffee combo in the back, this would rather kind of work, relatively. Well no, I’m having trouble liking it a lot, honestly. Finish: medium, dry and a little burnt and bitter. Burnt molasses, heavy cinnamon, some sour cardboard in the aftertaste. Comments: love the distillery, the people, the master blender, the settings and some of their whiskies, but frankly, I find this one rather too difficult. Tough love. 75 points - whiskyfun.com

Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 12 months.Rich, dense and luxuriously silky in its flow, this is Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.
Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep black dark purple hue. Rich and sumptuous, layered across the full bodied palate is a luxurious flow of opulent dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits. Vanillin oak, earthy dark chocolate and spicy fennel elements extend across the back half. Dense and plush yet fresh it boasts terrific power and concentration. Kentucky Owl Confiscated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATESReduced from $230.00$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 48.2%"...the balance of maturity on the nose and verve on the palate work to excellent effect. " - whiskyadvocate.com
A brand that dates back to 1879 under the stewardship of Master Blender, C.M. Dedman, with the modern company revived in 2014, then acquired by Stoli in 2017 with plans to open up a new distillery using the brand name. According to Kentucky Owl, “Confiscated pays tribute to the barrels the government seized from Dixon's great-great grandfather, C.M. Dedman, just ahead of Prohibition. Those barrels were never seen or tasted again. More than a century later, Confiscated is the first offering from Kentucky Owl that will be available in all 50 U.S. states.”
Sourced from undisclosed distillery[ies] in Kentucky, the bottle comes beautifully presented with an old school label, sub titled "The Wise Man's Bourbon". More recent acclaim includes 96 points by Tasting Panel magazine and 96 points from the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2023.Other reviews... The nose is spiced—cinnamon, allspice, clove, pepper—and rich with cooked fruit—blueberry jam, stewed plums, pomegranate molasses—as well as roasted peanuts, vanilla, and oak. In the mouth, there’s more liveliness, with Big Red gum, cherry pie, blackberry cobbler, peanuts, and cinnamon-apple coffee cake. It wraps up beautifully, with chili-chocolate, roasted nuts, and cigar end. Kentucky Owl doesn’t disclose the ages of the bourbons used in this bottling, but the balance of maturity on the nose and verve on the palate work to excellent effect. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton 2019
...Mystery or no, it’s solid stuff: Bright and fruity on the nose, it evokes mint and citrus peel, plus more natural, expected cocoa powder and vanilla elements. The palate is subtle and balanced — really quite gentle. More mint up front, then chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, vanilla sauce. Lots of sauce — in the best way. Here and there: Notes of Maraska cherry, a pinch of spice. A hint of barrel char only serves to balance things out on the back end, lending a light touch of savoriness to an otherwise silky, cocoa-heavy finish. I greatly enjoyed this whiskey from start to finish — and wish I’d tasted it back on release in 2019. As for the Prohibition part, I am reasonably certain those hepcats didn’t have it nearly this good. - drinkhacker.com

Kilchoman Machir Bay 2025 Edition Cask Strength Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$164. 99Bottle$1979.88 DozenABV: 58.1%The first Machir Bay cask strength release in over three years!
For those who've been hanging for a new cask strength Machir Bay, the wait is over. Bottled at a natural strength, it employs the same cask regime as the standard Machir Bay, capturing the wonderfully intense, vibrant zesty character the distillery is known for. On the nose, there's baked citrus, brine, white pepper and savoury peat galore, soaked into a sponge of vanilla oak. Whiffs of liquorice and menthol continue the fresh Islay theme. Creamy and intense on entry; completely mouth filling with early vanillas and an oily, off-dry ashiness coming to the fore. Menthol cigarettes, spent cigars... the finish finds a touch of grassiness and a citric acidity, with a complexing minerality competing with the sweet oak. Very fine and emphatically maritime malt, as you would expect. Think Bruichladdich meets cask strength Lagavulin - and probably one of the best values from Islay in its category. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Machir Bay Cask Strength shows a deep golden colour, richer than the standard expression. The nose is bold and smoky, with sweet vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels, layered with citrus and tropical fruit, and hints of floral and mineral complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and warming, with creamy malt sweetness balancing maritime peat smoke, fresh and candied citrus, toffee, and subtle spice. The finish is long and lingering, with smoke gradually giving way to vanilla, toasted coconut, and a soft saline note. This dram is perfect for those seeking a powerful and prolonged Machir Bay experience.

2014 Kilchoman Single Cask #14/1007 Australian Exclusive Sauternes Cask Finish Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 56.3%The Australian importer's single cask selection was aged in fresh Bourbon wood for just over six and a half years, then spent a further eighteen months finishing in an x-Sauternes Hogshead (sweet white wine from Bordeaux). While Kilchoman have previously released bottlings that were fully matured in Sauternes casks, this nevertheless ranks as an extended secondary maturation, compared to 5-6 months that many might consider the 'norm'. Consequently, if you're used to the style of core releases like Machir Bay or Sanaig, this offers a different Kilchoman experience. On the nose, the usually effusive maritime character is offset by notes of bush honey, dried apricots and jaffas with just a little iodine/menthol lift contributing freshness. Flavour wise, it's quite an attack - mouthfilling, textural and oily with a malty mid-palate followed by a tang of tangerine peel and a spike of heat. The Sauternes cask almost gets the better of the peat, leaving you with residual notes of sweet tobacco, chimney soot, menthol rub and dark chocolate. An after dinner treat. 56.3% Alc./Vol. 50ppm. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the importers... Nose: Driven by notes of vanilla and rich apricot with an elegant underlying peat smoke. Palate: Opening rich honey-sweetness makes way for an intense influence of almond followed by a classic Kilchoman peat smoke combined with toasted oak. Finish: Dried fruit, lemon zest and rich spice balanced with a long-lasting malty sweetness.

La Gritona Reposado Tequila (700ml)Jalisco, MEXICO$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 40%Premium Tequila scoop buy. Get ready for Spring / Summer Margaritas.
‘La Gritona’ is Spanish for ‘The Screamer’ - an appropriate name seeing that one of the people behind this outstanding tequila is LA-based punk guitarist Andy Coronado. The other significant player is the renowned tequilero Melly Cárdenas, who fashions La Gritona at her small distillery in Valle de Guadalupe in the highlands of Jalisco. One of Mexico’s few female master distillers, the fiercely independent Cárdenas—who has 20 years of quality tequila production under her belt—shares Coronado’s love of the exceptional and unconventional, and leads a team staffed by only local women.
In a market dominated by major companies like Herradura, Patrón and Fortaleza, the duo set out to create a rocking, pared-down Reposado that would stand out by staying true to the region’s heritage. For a Reposado, La Gritona is light on colour and sweetness—Coronado and Cárdenas want none of the flavours that mask many commercial Reposados like vanilla, chocolate and dulce de leche. Instead this is packed with delicious, honest and savoury, roasted agave flavor, reminiscent of the old-style ‘rested’ tequila, before the mass market took hold: “It’s tequila like our grandparents drank,” says Cárdenas.
Working with 9- to 10-year-old, mature Blue Weber agave grown in the iron-rich red soil of the Jalisco highlands, every step of production after harvest takes place under Cárdenas’ own roof and with an attention to detail that the big boys, or those outsourcing distillation, cannot hope to replicate. The agave is steam-cooked in a single, thick-walled earthen oven for 24 hours and then allowed to rest for another 24 hours before crushing. The collected liquid is naturally fermented (no additives are used to push things along) in open steel vats at a rate dictated by the ambient air temperature and the wild yeasts, usually lasting between six to nine days. The double distillation takes place in small steel stills. Those bespoke bottles by the way are made from recycled Mexican glass, hand-blown just an hour’s drive from the distillery. Coronado uses any recycled clear glass he can find (mostly old Coke bottles) then chips in a few Dos Equis bottles for the green tint!
The distilled blanco is then rested in reused American whiskey barrels for eight months before bottling. These low-impact second- or third-fill barrels are given only the lightest char which allows for the refreshing, sappy notes of the agave to shine through, resulting in a tequila that sips and mixes perfectly in equal measure - it’s crisp, clean and elegant and kills it in a Tommy’s Margarita. Tasted uncut, the bouquet offers stunningly pure and keenly fresh scents of brine, dill pickles, capsicum, black pepper and pine sap; Five minutes stirs up sweeter scents of grilled pineapple, vanilla and coconut butter. The silky, medium bodied delivery is gently sweet and wonderfully elegant; Capsicum, green pine and white pepper feature while sappy agave flavours finish the profile with admirable balance. Seamless from start to finish, this stands out from Reposado pack. Highest recommendation. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Look for a pale straw hue and fruity/funky aromas. The palate offers distinct tropical fruit notes, opening with lychee and a faint floral hint, plus a faint waft of ripe-banana funk midpalate. The finish is long and drying, showing grapefruit peel and pink peppercorn. Sip or mix into Palomas. 95 points — wineenthusiast.com

It's similar in age to the Glenrothes except this time matured in an Oloroso American oak butt instead of European oak. The result is a softer wine input that pairs with MacDuff's slightly lighter spirit. Rich and malty on the nose, a lovely nutty sherry influence here, too, of the Amontillado kind (even though it's oloroso finished). Full bodied, unpretentious, leaning towards fruit'n'nut dark chocolate on the palate, thick with chewy choc-malt presence supported by balanced heat, slow burn oak and a flurry of spices. This one was originally matured in a hogshead then 'finished' for six long years in a first fill Amontillado sherry cask sourced from Josafer cooperage. It needs time to blow off the intense bittersweet cocoa nose and sharp citrus edge, giving way to poached Summer fruits. Settles into a gargantuan malt-drive. A tongue blasting malt-fest. Few will have tasted Glen Elgin as bold and feisty as this. You'll need water to get past the over-the-top experience uncut, which turns the profile to orange-filled milk chocolates. 236 bottles. 57.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Telling a palo cortado from an amontillado in a finishing is nothing short of wizardry, and we’ll freely admit we are quite unable to do so. Colour: full gold. Nose: the profile is naturally quite close but it’s even less marked by American oak, consequently showing more lemon and green apple, and naturally more power as well. At this stage, it also seems a little more mineral than maritime, or so it seems to me. With water: we’re extremely close to the wee ‘Harbour’, only leaning more clearly towards minerality and even greenness. Mouth (neat): powerful, cutting, extremely sharp, all on lemon and soluble aspirin tablets. Lemon-flavoured tablets, for example. This minimalist side is very lovely indeed, we sometimes call these babies ‘Bauhaus’ whiskies. With water: it becomes very chalky. As luck would have it, we do like that. Finish: very long, ultra-precise, dominated by a maritime lemon. Perhaps there are lemon trees in Wick? There are some on the other side, near Ullapool… Comments: a superb creature, taut as a competition bow (and the first to mention Agincourt/Azincourt again will answer to me). 87 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... the maritime character of this malt shines through... The distillate is a heavy bodied spirit with spicy and fruity notes of lemon sherbet, salt and black pepper and liquorice.

1998 Lady of the Glen Ben Nevis Single Cask #176 26 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 43.2%Rare to find nowadays and especially from this vintage: Unpeated Ben Nevis in distinctive form. Soft and winey, like Pinot Gris. Pears, apples, and a low-key spent candle wax note to the nose, hovering below sweet citrus blossoms. Chewy yet rounded, the flavours skew towards a playful tropical-fruit side of Nevis; Nectarine, passionfruit, subtle elderflower and a succulence that's pure joy. Add 5ml of water and those notes persist. Perhaps the only distillery that routinely matches this for grace and style is decades-old Jura. At a naturally low ABV, savour it straight or with no more than a single ice cube or you're probably wasting your money. 276 bottles from a refill hogshead. 43.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... An interesting bottling strength, which might hint at a more complex and tertiary profile than some other releases from the same vintage… Colour: white wine. Nose: oh yes, this is spot on – clearer than expected but also more precise, on beeswax, lemon, seawater and a few hints of dill, before shifting into the realm of top-tier Burgundian chardonnays, with that distinctly chalky terroir. Though perhaps the robe of the malt already pointed us in that direction. Mouth: a little more fragile on the palate, with a more pronounced herbal infusion side, but I still find it excellent. Perfect salinity and lovely, mildly sweet pepper. Finish: not especially long, but the waxiness returns, and that’s always welcome. Very ripe banana and pear. Comments: one of its lesser qualities is that you could sip it in outrageous quantities without blinking. Not that we’re recommending that, naturally. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Lagavulin 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $220.00$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%Lagavulin, pronounced 'Lagga-voolin' (meaning 'the hollow where the mill is') is distinctive and powerful. Once described as 'liquid bandaid' for its strong medicinal character, it is perhaps the most assertive, complex and intensely dry of all the Islay malts. The palate overwhelms like an ocean wave with powerful peaty, salty overtones that re-emerge on the finish. The taste sensation lingers long in the mouth. On a cold wet winters night, there is perhaps no finer tonic than a dram of Lagavulin.
Other reviews… If anyone has noticed a slight change in Lagavulin, they would be right. The peat remains profound but much more delicate than before, while the oils appear to have receded. A different shape and weight dispersal for sure. But the sky high quality remains just the same. 95 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2022.
...This has been Lagavulin’s principal expression for more than 30 years. Iodine, rich peat, and caramel on the early nose, with sherry, sea salt, and charcuterie. The oily, briny palate offers peat and a medicinal note, along with black tea, Seville orange, toffee, cinnamon, and a hint of smoked fish. Peat embers and hot tar in the lengthy, spicy finish. Deeply satisfying! 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith 2020
...Nose: Massive peat. Ultra-intense iodine carries a shade more spice than of old. The fruity-sherry notes are clean, vanilla is much deeper. Beautifully layered. Palate: Peat so thick you could stand a spoon in it. Chewy iodine bolstered by sherry and big oak. Finish: A little spice lightens the grip of the peat and vanilla. Dries off with malt, dried dates... and iodine. Comment: A true classic in every sense that offers breathtaking depth. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2006
...Nose: Lapsang Souchong and fruity sherry. Palate: The dryness is at first offset by the sweetness of the sherry character. As the palate develops, oily, grassy, and, in particular, salty notes emerge in a long, sustained, aggressive, attack. Finish: A huge, powerful, bear-hug of peat. Comment: The driest of Islay malts, and an established classic. 9.5 /10 - Michael Jackson, whiskymag.com
More about the Distillery... Lagavulin legitimately claims to being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. From here 1,000 Islaymen set sail to fight alongside Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, and in this bay the Macdonalds maintained their power base as Lords of the Isles until finally driven out by the Campbells three centuries later. Distilling on the site is thought to date from as early as 1742. In the late 1700s it is believed that there were up to ten illicit stills operating in the district. The Lagavulin distillery officially became legal in 1816 and by the 1830s only two distilleries remained in the bay. In 1837 these distilleries unified under the Lagavulin title, coming under the ownership of the Graham brothers and James Logan Mackie. By 1875 the distillery was producing 75,000 gallons of whisky annually. The distillery's water is sourced from a nearby stream. The maturation warehouses are by the sea and when the seas are high, Lagavulin's outer walls are knee-high in salt water. Lagavulin uses Larch wood washbacks and individual onion-shaped stills with unique steep swan-necked lye pipes which the distillers claim profoundly affect the taste and refuse to change in any way.

The assemblage contains 40% of reserve wines that have been aged in barrel. Finally, the wine spends 6 months maturing on fine lees in bottle before disgorgement for release.
Showing ample buoyancy over a pale straw coloured base is a lacy white mousse. A delicate yet very persistent bead finely threading its way through the wines core. Captivating aromatics of yeast lees and baked bread are followed by some citrus, oily toast like notes and hints of almond. Vividly sculptured the palate combines tension with intensity and richness delivering citrusy yeast lees and toasty baked bread flavours over a stimulating finish of subtle cashew and a chalky minerality. The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs marries power with energy to a degree I have not seen before here. In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Laphroaig Quarter Casks Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $159.99$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 48%"Layer upon layer of sexed up peatiness. Hits mega malt status" - Jim Murray Whisky Bible
Two hundred years ago, when the Scotts began moving whisky around the country in smaller barrels (aka quarter casks) they were improving more than methods of logistics. The smaller vessels made it easier for mules to carry and for the distillers to smuggle (what better way to inspire innovation than a ploy against the tax man!). In more recent times, with the rise of the micro distiller, smaller casks have played an important part by rapidly speeding-up the maturation process, increasing the whisky to oak contact ratio, in theory making it more palatable, at a faster rate.
For this release, after an initial period in x-bourbon barrels, the liquid was transferred into new, specially produced quarter casks for a final seven-to eight-month period. It's also bottled at a higher ABV to keep in line with older traditions. There's a serious complexity to the bouquet, with the first passing reeking of choc fudge and vanilla-laced peat. After a few minutes in the glass, the nose loses a little punch, but becomes more maritime; A subtle peppermint note combines with hints of bandaid and seaweed. In the mouth, this is a robust, oily, mouth-filling Laphroaig experience with waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla delivered in a creamy, warming mouthfeel with a mild prickle. The finish is refreshingly dry with cocoa, more peat and subtle baked citrus note lingering. Quarter Cask is not a gentle Laphroaig, but it’s much more compelling than the standard issue 10. If you can score a bottle close to one hundred dollars, don't hesitate. 48% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... “Nose: Burning embers of peat in a crofter’s fireplace; sweet intense malt and lovely, refreshing citrus as well; Taste: mouthwatering, mouth-filling and mouth-astounding: the perfect weight of the smoke has no problems filling every crevice of the palate; builds towards a sensationally sweet maltiness in the middle; Finish: really long and dries appropriately with smoke and spice. Classic Laphroaig. Balance: a great distillery back to its awesome, if a little sweet, self. Layer upon layer of sexed up peatiness. The previous bottling just needed an extra complexity on the nose for this to hit mega malt status. Now it has been achieved” 96 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2015
The whisky begins sweet and creamy, with notes of vanilla, honey, and ripe malt (reminiscent of a malting floor). Then the Laphroaig signature peat smoke, seaweed, tar, and medicinal notes emerge. Bottling at 48% and without chill-filtering keeps the whisky from being dulled down. A whisky that is very dynamic. Nicely done. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $128.99$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%"So consistent is the Laphroaig 10, that this is one of the whiskies I test myself each day with to check that my nose and palate are on song". - Jim Murray
From the remote island of Islay in the Western Isles of Scotland. Laphroaig, pronounced 'La-froyg', is a Gaelic word meaning 'the beautiful hollow by the broad bay'. The full history of Laphroaig seems to be lost in the mists of time. It's clear that the Irish had been distilling on Islay for many years and that the locals picked up the skills when they left, but because it was illegal the small stills on the farms were rarely discussed - just a nod and a wink in the right direction! What is known, is that the family called the Johnstons started farming there around 1800, and that soon after messers Charles and Willie Doig were asked to do some 'work on a distillery' at Laphroaig. By 1815 Laphroaig's reputation had spread and the tax man was getting suspicious so they 'officially' established 'Johnston & Johnston' - the legend of Laphroaig had begun.
Laphroaig is a malt to either love or hate. Full of the smoke and iodine, seaweed character Islay has become famous for, it has spurred some commentators to describe it as 'mouthwash', 'hospital gauze' or at best, 'medicinal'. Suffice to say, this is not a whisky for the faint hearted. Take Laphroaig neat like a stalwart, or with a splash of soft water. Roll it around on your tongue, release the pungent earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's stream and either swallow or spit. The final judgment on Laphroaig must always be left to the individual. 40% Alc./Vol.
Re-tasted 2019... Tamer than previous incarnations, earthier too with a farmyard edge. Less iodine / elastoplast than before, more peppermint, baked citrus, kipper and lanolin, creaming up towards the finish, trailling off with hints of Fisherman’s Friend.
Other reviews... "...as timeless and awe-inspiring as the Oa on Islay..." 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26
...An essay in voluptuousness. The oils speak volumes here, gathering the two-toned phenols and gathering them in all corners of the palate and ensuring they stick there... The finish is not so much enormous as controlled and long, with a sublime bit of mocha moving in for the last blissful moments. Glorious still, after all these years. 40% alc./vol. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019
...This expression offers an uncompromising note of brine-laden peat and iodine, with charcoal and sweeter fruit notes also present. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smouldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic! 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Fall 2018)
...I know this bottle is from 2024, because I bought it in the supermarket last Christmas and then forgot about it, until now… Colour: gold (still some caramel deployed no doubt). Nose: hey, Bonfanti rotation 76! I’m kidding. But it is fruitier than some other recent batches to my mind, some pineapple in syrup, some mango chunks, then damp hessian and cooling wort. Behind that a, softer than usual I would say, waft of TCP and iodine. I have to say, this generally softer and fruitier profile is really great. Mouth: a more typical modern arrival, with a little more weight towards the vanilla, the oak spice, but still balanced well enough by banana chips, some wood smoke and peat, some lanolin and camphor and then a bit of pine wood and wet rope. It feels less peaty overall than recent years, but at the same time the palate is still a tad too driven by the wood influence for my taste. In time those underlying DNA building blocks of peat smoke, iodine and seawater come through. Finish: medium, some charming herbal peat smoke and smoked teas, camphor, pine resin and cedar. Comments: same as usual 40% etc, blah blah blah. However, I really enjoyed the nose on this particular occasion, it felt surprisingly fruity for a change, whereas the palate a little more in line with what you would expect from present era 10yo. As ever, contradictions, frustrations and fascinations in equal measure. Pour one dram in a copita to nose, and one larger measure in a tumbler to sip. Last time I properly recoded notes was in 2016 and back then it was WF84, I think we can go one notch higher today thanks to that lovely nose… 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Larmandier-Bernier Longitude Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra BrutChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $155.00$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Diam CorkOther Reviews....
The Larmandier-Bernier wines are marked by a feeling of textural intensity and vinous resonance that is quite distinctive. The wines are fermented in wood, mostly larger format foudre with some smaller barrels, with spontaneous fermentations and generally minimal handling. Dosage is on the low side. In recent years, the style here has shifted towards a greater focus on energy and tension than in the past, likely a reflection of a generational change being led by Pierre and Sophie Larmandier’s sons Arthur and Georges. The wines remain compelling.
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Longitude 1er Cru is a powerful, ample wine. The Longitude builds beautifully in the glass, creamy and textured, with tons of resonance. Pear, white pepper, dried flowers, mint and chalk are all delineated in a Champagne that blends power and tension. This is all class. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2023.

Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra BrutChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $135.00$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Diam CorkLarmandier-Bernier’s Latitude is a 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These are vineyards on roughly the same latitude and the name also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these sites (having more clay in the soil) tend to offer up. In the cellar Larmandier uses mostly large format casks (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria) and less and less steel tanks. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place without inoculation, and there is no fining or filtration. Bottle maturation takes place in the underground cellars over a period of more than two years, and each bottle is disgorged manually, six months before being released and dosed at low, Extra Brut levels.
Once dissipated, the creamy white mousse leaves behind a pale straw coloured base that has a glimmer of gold to the edges. Nibble and exceptionally fine bubbles rising to the surface. On the nose, aromas of pear intermingle with citrus, yeast lees, light baked bread and hints of sherbet. Long, dry and virile, the refreshing palate consists of baked pear, citrus and yeast lees characters over subtle oily toast nuances and faint remanets of biscuit and cashew. The finish is very dry with crisp, mouth watering acidity and a long refined aftertaste.

This Blanc de Blancs champagne is anything but flashy and it might take a moment switch onto its wavelength. However, it has excellent depth and finely etched contours on the medium-bodied palate, the Amalfi-lemon character building as it aerates in the glass. Beautiful balance at the very long, rather rich but very dry finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThe 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended. Sealed under screw cap. Drink 2030-2047.

This iconic Australian Chardonnay never allows standards to drop and this is yet another stellar effort from the great Chardonnay production line. A shimmering pale lemon, we have notes of spices, lemon curd, ginger, pink grapefruit, lemongrass, florals, peaches, nectarines, jasmine and stone fruits. There is a whiff of smoky oak as well and integration is proceeding well. There is complete balance here, with focus and energy. The wine is still very young and it will certainly be better if you can wait for two or three years before opening. Then enjoy it for a further ten to fifteen years. Juicy, with a supple texture and a long and lingering finish, along which the intensity is maintained for the full journey. A cracker. Drink 2025-2040.

Named after an earlier distillery in Campbeltown, Longrow's creation was prompted by a whisky shortage. According to Serge Valentin, it shares parallels with Tobermory’s Ledaig and Clynelish’s Brora. All were created because Islay whisky was in short supply after severe droughts in the late 1960s, and because of the temporary closure of Caol Ila. Expect a peaty punch. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Complex, youthful, varietal and enticing bouquet. Aromas of grapefruit and sweet peach, lemon and vanilla, raw cashew nut butter and layers of lees complexities. Near full-bodied on the palate with fruit, oak and lees flavours reflecting the bouquet. The key with this wine is the acid line accentuating the citrus with grapefruit peel, then complexities from lees and development. The minerality is also a feature with a clay, stone and baking spice qualities. Lengthy, dry on the finish and delicious with best drinking from 2024 through 2030+.

Maxime Trijol Selection XO Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%A super buy in XO Cognac with the presentation to match.
A 'sister' bottling to our biggest selling XO cognac, Maxime Trijol's 'XO Selection' is composed of slightly younger eaux de vie, drawing on a higher proportion of Ugni Blanc from the Fins Bois appellation. The value looks to be just as exceptional as their signature XO, with no big brand house coming close to the price being offered here. 40% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Amber-mahogany dress with golden and coppery highlights. Brilliant colour. The first nose is floral (iris, jasmine) and spicy (hazelnut, vanilla wood). The attack is silky and voluptuous. The aromatic notes are intense and round (floral, fruity marmalade, woody). Very beautiful, noble and well-balanced Cognac.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.comGrand Vintage 2016 sums up the year's strong suits very neatly – beautiful ripeness without heaviness, compact build and fine ageworthiness. It's a characteristically clean-cut, snappy vintage from Moët, with aromas of fresh baguette, satsuma, sweet red apple and strawberry, all framed with the toasty sourdough aromas typical of the house. There's some concentration and vinosity lurking here, even with the house's delicate style and pinpoint, meringue-soft mousse. This seems destined to be one of the top Moët vintages of late. Totally opaque sienna brown black colour with a deep walnut brown olive green hue. Such is its viscosity that it clings to the side of the glass like paint. The colour is an astounding density. A myriad of dried fruit panettone, lapsang, five-spice, hoisin and roasted walnut doused in espresso and bitter chocolate, reel from a core of thoroughbred intensity. Almost incomprehensible concentration here. This has a deeply aged, toasty and dark nutty edge on the nose. Roasted honey, dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt, too. Here’s a wine that expresses all that we love about this region which has produced consistently some of the finest Rieslings we make in this country. This one’s quite a delicate wine, and yet there’s an intensity that opens on the nose with a limey, zesty, floral note, and then catapults into the palate, which is finely held with a delicate acidity supporting the lovely crisp fruit characters. It has a powdery, tense feel on the palate, and yet there is fruit sweetness. Drink 2025-2035.

From a warm and dry vintage when the balance of ripe flavour and natural grape acidity was a critical decision point come harvest. This has got it bang on with a delicate feel – aromas in a familiar yellow and green citrus fruit and blossom mode, the palate more towards lime flesh with on the mark, get set tanginess supportive rather than dominating, offering a fine pith finishing texture. A lovely Clare Riesling with all its elements clear and harmonious.

From two premium vineyards on the estate that are a combination of terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the sites are located at the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks that deliver lower yields but excellent concentration. Picked on different days and from different blocks to allow for optimum ripening and multiple blending options, parcels of fruit for this Cabernet were separately fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel to complete fermentation in a 30% new French and 5% American oak combination.

Here we have an importer's selection that leans away from the extremes of Billy Walker’s official bottlings, straddling a line between older Glendronachs or Glengoynes, making for something more sophisticated in the genre. At first taste, leather and bitter peel lead into biscuity malt followed by juicy oloroso; time in the glass develops hints of honeyed cereals, curaçao, cinnamon buns, cafe cremes, walnuts and dark chocolate. It takes water well, but on its own this is perfectly approachable and worthy of the attention of fans of complex, drier-styled malts.
