Other reviews... Tasted at the Whisky Exchange tasting with Angus Macraild. What a phenomenal example of old style Springbank. If you like minerality and dunnage taste, you will love this. Seems more strongly peated than usual for a Springbank...Smoke lingers nicely. Turf and earth notes. Mulch scraps. Don't drink any other whisky after this, you won't taste it. - whiskybase.com
"Beautifully expressive distillate driven pure Springbank." - whiskybase.com
Decadent Drinks started as a conversation between its founders, Angus MacRaild and Iain McClune. Iain asked Angus if he would be interested to collaborate with some indy bottling, with the intention that it was very much a side project for both of them. Angus, at that time, had been writing a popular satirical blog called 'Whiskysponge' for a number of years and had been separately thinking it might be fun to use it as a label for an indy bottling of some sort, but this was never more than a notional idea. As it turned out: Iain had some casks, Angus had some ideas, and the first 'Whisky Sponge' bottlings emerged from these discussions in January 2019. From there the range has continued to expand.

2012 Domaine Clarendon Syrah Museum ReleaseClarendon, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$26. 99Bottle$323.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2024-2030)ABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Clarendon is the ambitious project of Clarendon Hills winemaker Roman Bratasiuk and his son Alex. Planted in 2006 using Astralis cuttings the vineyard is dry grown with yields at less than 1 tonne per acre. The vineyards soil structure is solid rock (the vineyard cultivator broke two 'industrial-as' Caterpillar row rippers on rocks the size of houses) and it is located 315 metres above sea level - the highest altitude vineyard in Clarendon and also McLaren Vale.
A superb Syrah that boasts formidable concentration, power and structure.
Sourced directly from the winery this museum release delivers outstanding value when one considers the bottle age behind it and the fact that the current vintage (2020) is selling for $32.99. A no brainer buy if you like rich, robust reds.
Exceptional colour for a Syrah with 12 years bottle age behind it displaying an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are potent aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry which intermix with some vanillin cedar, traces of dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Boasting magnificent density, power and depth of fruit along with a firm structure, the bold, weighty palate is well and truly alive and kicking. Rich, opulent blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are backed by muscular tannins which assert their presence, imparting a grippy feel onto the back half. Vanillin cedar, earth and blackpepper characters linger through the long, densely fruited yet robust finish.

Concentrated and powerful, waves of rich, super succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp every corner of the mouth. Infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered meats lie underneath. Ripe chewy tannins lend some muscle to what is otherwise a lavish feel. Concludes very long and seductive.

All Grenache from very old vines and the clay soils of the Les Fouquesses lieu-dit, the 2020 Rasteau Héritage 1924 reveals a vivid purple/ruby hue to go with perfumed aromatics of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, and flowery incense. It's medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and has a seamless mouthfeel. Raised all in concrete tank, this naked expression of Grenache is going to drink beautifully for a decade. Drink 2023-2033.

2023 Groiss Gruner VeltlinerWeinviertel, AUSTRIA$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 1 Years (2024-2025)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinAfter a high flying career in marketing Ingrid Groiss returned to her family origins, enrolling in viticulture, oenology and wine marketing at the University of Vienna. During those studies she gained experience with producers such as Domäne Wachau, Birgit Braunstein and Birgit Eichinger. She had to play second fiddle to her chief winemaker dad until in 2010 when she went head-to-head with him in a blind taste-off of their own wines, with the victor being handed the winemaker's reins. Needless to say Ingrid came out on top.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple skin and musk aromas flood the nostrils followed by some quince and delicate spice notes. Delicious pear and red apple fruits glide across the palate imparting a slippery feel along the course of their journey. Juicy, crisp acidity lifts the intensity of flavour even further. Quince, lime, infusions of fresh herbs and wet stone elements also chime in. Excellent concentration finishing with an energized zing on the long moreish finish. A wonderful entry level example of Gruner Veltliner.

Eden Valley riesling from Flaxman Valley. Pale with green flashes in the glass and aromas of wonderfully perfumed, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit tones with hints of mineral salts, Christmas lily, frangipani, crushed quartz, lavender and distant hints of marzipan and fennel tops. Pure and true with just a touch of textural pith, sapid mineral-rich acidity and a long draw on the finish. Good cellaring potential here. Drink by 2035.

Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionFlaxman’s Valley is a high altitude sub-region of the Eden Valley and one of our most highly regarded districts for growing great Riesling. Combine that with the stellar 2023 vintage and we are in for something special. Cold fermentation took place in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. A shining pale yellow colour. This is beautifully perfumed with talc, bath salts, lavender, florals and citrus, notably intense limes with fine balance and a lingering finish. There is a fine line of crisp acidity with good intensity. Love this and best at ten to twelve years, with potentially a lot more, ahead of it. Drink 2023-2035.

2023 Hentley Farm Eden Valley RieslingEden Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$22. 99Bottle$275.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2023-2031)ABV: 11%Closure: StelvinSourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks of varying aspects, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2023 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and gradual flavour accumulation. This resulted in wines that possess a combination of high natural acidity, intense flavours and amazing power.
A super scrumptious Eden Valley Riesling that delivers mouth watering flavours with terrific drive and force.
Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green around the outskirts. Soaring out of the glass with fantastic intensity are aromatics of lime, citrus and orange rind followed by talc and chalky mineral like notes. A concentrate of mouth watering lime, citrus and orange rind fruits engulfs every corner of the mouth, overlaying a chalky talc, subtle wet steel and mineral back drop. Le Brun de Neuville Cote Blanche ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Diam CorkLe Brun de Neuville is one of the leading producers in the limestone slopes of the Côte de Sézanne, one the southern sub-regions of Champagne. Their vineyards are predominantly Chardonnay and they are committed to encouraging a sustainable approach to viticulture by adopting increasingly environmentally friendly practices and the resulting wines are certified 'Haute Valeur Environnementale'. The vineyards are fascinating with only a thin layer of soil covering the intensely chalky soil.
Their Côte Blanche is 100% Chardonnay from the 45 year old vines. The harvest base is 2016 with 52% reserve wines spending 60 months on lees before disgorgement and release.
Pours with a fine satiny mousse that shows good hold over a pale straw pale gold coloured base. The bead is very persistent and fine. Nosing offers up a classic Champagne sniff of baked bread, dried honey, yeast lees, brioche and cashew that’s quite intoxicating. Rich and expressive with a cream tinged mouth feel and dry chalky finish, baked bread, pear, yeast lees and brioche flavours are quite full across the palate. Barrel fermented and matured in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for a period of 11 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tint of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey delicately infused with gun flint engulf the nostrils. Biscuity oak, subtle cashew, citrusy nougat and spice notes add a further dimension of complexity. Beautifully shaped, expansive and refined the palate is layered with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits which overlay a biscuity nougat, subtle dried honey, ginger spice, roast almond and gun flint back drop. Tremendously powerful yet relatively light on its feet it has a fresh silken like feel. Finishes with exceptional length and finesse.

Alc. 13.5%Other Reviews…..
The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom. The season was a challenging one in Margaret River, defined by the rainfall, which was constant. The temperatures were modest (not cool, as plenty of rain might suggest),and given that the region is so diverse in terms of distances between vineyard areas, this created quite a patchwork of outcomes for producers. On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory—it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Sealed under screw cap.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThere’s always an anticipation when a new vintage arrives. This doesn’t disappoint – it’s archetypal Art Series: powerful, rich and layered with flavour from stone fruit, pink grapefruit and Meyer lemon to a touch of mandarin. The palate builds with creamy lees, oak spice and some phenolics – the oak is superbly integrated, and pure acidity leads this to a persistent finish. Impressive as always. Drink by 2034.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionI seem to have missed tasting the 2020 LEAS Chardonnay, which is kind of disappointing. It’s a blip in my Leeuwin radar, given I’ve tasted every one of them on release since the 1992 vintage. Anyway, teeth gnashing aside, the bottle seems to be lighter these days, which is very good.
Pear, lime, grapefruit, floral too, with a distinct mint/aniseed top note, backed with discreet spicy cinnamon/ginger oak. It’s fresh and lively, quite saline too, flinty and chalky, a honey ginger drink character in the mix, along with a cucumber coolness and biscuit spices, a whole lot of presence and power here, delivered in a kind of understated, but confident way. The finish is very long, and refreshing. Gee, this is good wine. It ripples through the mouth like a flat white stone pitched across a cool lake. That’s an image for you, and I’ll leave you with that. Drink 2025-2040+

Very complete and made for the ages. Excellent. Drink or hold. Crown cap.

It was there that his love of Montepulciano began, and those memories have inspired him to make this Aussie version from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills. Montepulciano is the name of both a grape variety and a town in Tuscany, Italy, which causes confusion as the two are not actually connected in any way.
Dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Dark to black cherry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils followed by some dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar and scorched earth notes. Rich and full in body, the juicy palate is flush with morello and black cherry, liquorice as well as dark plum fruits. An absolute cracker. Deep blood red in colour, this is ripe and alluring. The nose gives up aromas of chocolate, plums, cherries, licorice, soy, beef stock and miso. There really is so much packed in here and yet, everything remains in balance. The wine is seamless with good intensity and silky tannins. Very good length here too, which persists impressively. Other reviews... Nose: Bottled was left to evolve after opening it for 2+ months. Nice & Rounded. Fresh green cardamoms, aniseed & bonfire. Dried lemon peels, bay leaves & sage. Iodine & some sea spray. Reminds me of a young Kilchoman, the nose. Fresh. Some white pepper, kafir lime, white asparagus. Palate: A good sting. Pepper. Lime. Peat. Luscious. A bit of cool mint. Honestly I tried this whisky 5-6 times and every time I feel its a bit cooler when it touches the palate. Wonderful this. Sooty, ashy, and quite farmy. Lot of freshness. A bit of poor man’s Port Ellen. Rhubarb. Rock salt. Beautiful. A proper Laphroaig bourbon cask. Heavy. Not elegant. Not sophisticated. But enjoyable Laphroaig. 88-89 should be the score but this is of the good modern Laphroaig I have tried. Some yellow fruits but not too much. Finish: Sweet peat, salty, rhubarb, rock salt and kafir lime all the way but with a stinging pepperish note. A big, bold, but clean Laphroaig. - whiskybase.com
[Sister cask #3372 tasted / notes indicative only] This one's very dark for an ex-BB malt, but as we used to say in math (and malt) class, there are more exceptions than rules. Colour: full gold with copper hues. Nose: charcoal at first, old fireplace, guns, then meats and dried fish. Beef jerky, soot, coal dust, waxed papers, cigars, Aperol Spritz (apologies), eucalyptus wood… I find it curiously thick and 'sherried' for a bourbon hogshead, but we shan't complain as this one too is 'vastly superior'. With water: this kind of nutty and salty style that's rather to be found in deep-sherried Laphroaigs. Cherry liqueur, kirschwasser… Seriously, loving this, but what happened? Mouth (neat): beautifully weird, with some 7-up, lemonade, even Schweppes, then seawater, oysters, tobacco, liquorice wood… It is certainly not your average ex-bourbon Laphroaig. With water: no, this cannot be. If this was indeed a 'simple' bourbon cask, I'll eat a whole family-size Hawaiian pizza from Domino's, but I'll need proof. Finish: long, extremely good, with black raisins and loads of smoke. Comments: am I losing my mind? Or is someone gently pulling my leg? Ex-bourbon, really? 90 points - whiskyfun.com

Two casks combined, (2nd fill Oloroso sherry butts) were bottled at 46% without chill filtration. Reportedly, the sherry influence doesn't overpower the grain. The price has never been this good. This will go fast.
"...it's amazing. Quaffable and drinkable and simple great! Bang for your buck." - whiskybase.com
"Very enjoyable, and while these casks have likely been used extensively, they still add to the overall experience. At this price point, I believe it offers good value, particularly for those on a tight budget." - whiskybase.com

2012 Signatory Vintage Longmorn 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 58.3%Why would you consider Longmorn's official 16 year old when you can score this beauty at a bargain price? We have cask #914, however Signatory have released a number of sister barrels. It seems the flawless bourbon casks consistently bring out notes of coconut, green orchard fruits, honey and cereals - a profile that's admittedly "middle-of-the-road" for Scottish Highlanders, but none the worse for that. This cask yielded 229 bottles. Non chill filtered. 58.3% Alc./vol.
Other reviews... Nice bourbon moped! Urgently needs water, once the bliss point is found, pure enjoyment is the reward! Nose: First citric acid, slightly burnt caramel, then local orchard with surrounding flower meadow, some wood spice. Taste: Repetition of the nose. The wood spice is a little bitter, over time the bitterness decreases and the fruit notes and the caramel sweetness increase, additionally developing herbal notes. Nice, oily mouthfeel. Finish: Medium length, slightly dry. Apples (Grannie Smith) and wood spice. - whiskybase.com

1995 Signatory Vintage Port Dundas 28 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 59.7%A decade ago, there was a steady flow of Port Dundas coming to market, which made it seem like the barrels would never run out. Times have changed. Nowadays we're lucky to see more than a handful of releases each year, and few with impressive age statements like this. It is, of course, firmly in the realm of collectors since the distillery forever closed in 2009, with Diageo moving its primary grain whisky supply to Cameronbridge. Priced at well under $10/year of maturation, this represents a super-buy in the category. Grab it while you can! 215 bottles from a single Bourbon hogshead. 59.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

However, you can occasionally taste a single cask that stands out from the pack. In our experience they invariably succeed when matured in Sherry casks - it doesn't matter what type. - 1997 Signatory Vintage Linkwood 26 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 Dozen
Linkwood fans, don't hesitate! This is one of the smaller volume Cask Strength Signatorys to land, and it's all Bourbon matured which (in our opinion) shows Linkwood at its fruitiest and finest. Further endorsement from reviews on whiskybase.com below... 333 bottles at 53% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... There is something special about Linkwood, but I can't quite put my finger on it. A tropical fruit cocktail awaits, think of mango, pineapple and hints of coconut, followed by soft wood spices, orange peel and spearmint. What a lovely nose! Fruity-sweet in the arrival, the palate gravitates towards ripe peaches, ginger candies and eucalyptus. It's surprisingly delicate and silky at first, growing firmer as the age starts to shine through. The slightly grassy finish evolves with apricot jam, cloves and papaya. 2013 Signatory Vintage The Un-Chillfiltered Collection Edradour 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%In their price bracket, these delicious Edradours are considered the best old-school sherry whiskies money can buy. Typically the culmination of 3-4 carefully selected first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, they stand as proof positive that very tasty sherry bombs are achievable at 46% ABV. And of course, the additional mouthfeel that comes from not chill filtering is the icing on the cake. If you revel in whiskies that offer classic notes like dark chocolate, red fruits, orange peel, dried plums, Christmas compote, cinnamon and cloves without paying $200+, these little gems from one of Scotland's smallest distilleries are the way to go. 2012 Signatory Vintage Glenallachie 11 Year Old Small Batch Edition #8 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 48.2%Considering the official 12-year-old cask strength edition sells for around $200, at the asking price, this deeply coloured, high ABV Glenallachie should be a brilliant value. Matured for eleven years in Oloroso sherry casks before being bottled in 2024, it's summed up as "Nice sherried whisky at a fair price... a classic Glenallachie". (whiskybase.com). Expect a full-bodied dram with notes of raisin, fruitcake, dark chocolate and toasted baking spice. 48.2% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered.

The 2025 edition of Springbank's oldest official bottling was matured in 85% Bourbon and 15% Sherry casks. The outturn was higher than previous years, with 1900 bottles released. 46% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Nose: A rich and honeyed introduction to this dram, there are notes of ripe peaches, honeycomb and creamy chocolate. Palate: There is a vibrancy on the palate, with familiar tropical fruit and fresh tangerine notes, and a leathery note reminiscent of old library books developing over time. Finish: Tart and syrupy in the finish, with notes of brambles, maraschino cherries and a dunnage warehouse note to round off this dram.

1988 St Bridget's Kirk Cask #2 35 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 41.5%A remarkable value in the blended category.
Gregor Hannah has managed to 'rescue' a cask that was destined to be lost in a big brand blend. You'll be thanking him for bottling it. This is a beautiful, medium-bodied example of the kind of blend rarely found on the market today. Malt drinkers will find pleasure in the depth and seamless integration of flavours that conjure leather, honey, dried coconut and milk chocolate coupled with hints of cigar box, Bounty Bar, light pepper and rancio in a long, mature finish. Over ten to fifteen minutes in the glass this continues to open up and reward. Gentle and effortless uncut, so best consumed neat or with a single ice cube or you'll lose its nuances. 248 bottles were drawn from a refill butt at 41.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... We’d already tasted another cask of this ‘blended when young’ style (ex-Edrington in theory) by Hannah Whisky Merchants, which had been very, very good (WF 87). Colour: full gold. Nose: tricky to pin down, but that’s not the point—here there’s glue, smoke, bitter almonds, maraschino, lanolin, pistachio cream (we’ve just come back from Sicily), and rich, black potting soil. All of it is rather lovely. Mouth: almonds and pistachios take the lead, though a pronounced salinity and a good helping of black tobacco add a fine contradiction, rounded off with a bit of coconut (grain component?) It’s an intriguing profile, certainly unusual. Finish: medium length, but saltier still. A faint tequila-like touch. Comments: these are very unusual whiskies, the sort that no master blender could ever hope to replicate. That sense of rarity adds undeniable charm to the whole affair. 88 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... This exceptional blended scotch whisky is created in our unique and special way by blending malt and grain whiskies from different distilleries and differing spirit styles. Each batch is small, bespoke and distinctly different from the last. Bottled and hand labelled in our own warehouse where you'll be glad to know, no artificial colouring or chill-filtration takes place. The latest edition to our blended Scotch brand family is a 'classic blend'. By this we mean a mix of malt and grain whiskies blended in the tradition style. The taste offered - Blood orange, custard creams, furniture polish, black pepper, hazelnut and dried coconut.

Suntory Hakushu 12 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)Hokuto, Yamanashi, JAPANReduced from $380.00$289. 00Bottle$3468.00 DozenABV: 43%"A unique composition and a quintessential Japanese whisky experience." - whiskyadvocate.com
At the 2010 World Whisky Awards, whiskies from Japan won prizes in two of the top three categories for Scottish-styles. It was a turning point of sorts, yet those in the know weren't surprised; Japanese whiskies have been snapping up awards at international competitions for decades. The problem has been keeping up with international demand (the majority has traditionally been consumed within Japan). The situation has now changed with Suntory significantly increasing exports. A key role is played by their Hakushu distillery (pronounced "Hack-shoo"), one of the largest malt whisky distilleries not only in Japan, but in the world. Built in 1973 coinciding with Suntory's 50th anniversary, it's set amidst spectacular pine forests close to the Japanese Alps. Suntory also purchased the distillery surrounds to protect water quality and conserve the local environment. In fact, water from the district is considered the best in Japan, something Suntory have capitalised on by bottling and selling it throughout the country. Barley required for single malt production is reportedly imported from Scotland or elsewhere (including countries like France, England and Australia). Due to the height above sea level (700m), low pressure distillation occurs naturally, said to contribute to the light, fruity style. The latest renovations mean a variety of stills with different shapes, sizes, lyne arm orientations, heating methods and condenser types are geared towards diversity and quality rather than quantity. The resulting whiskies make a significant contribution to Suntory's large number of malts and blends.
The 12 year old Hakushu is considered a fine introduction to Japanese styles for those who enjoy smokey malts, though the degree of smokiness is said to vary from batch to batch. Our tasting from 2014 found a bright gold coloured whisky with restrained aromatics yielding faint suggestions of toast and honey. Several minutes adds muted scents of sponge cake without budging the intensity. The whisky tastes semi-sweet with a juicy feel and a lipsmacking, biscuity mid-palate hollowing towards the finish with some late sweetness and delicate oils entering. It's clean and crisp making for a nice aperitif; you could also describe it as youthful and vibrant, but not peaty. See Whisky Advocate's notes below for notes on a more recent bottling.
Other reviews... Fragrant and herbal aromas, with pine needles, basil, green bell pepper, pea pod, black truffle, peppercorn, and smoke from smoldering dry mosses and wood shavings. It’s very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. A unique composition and a quintessential Japanese whisky experience. [2023 tasting] 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com
A floral nose, slightly smoky, with some brine. Huge flavour in the mouth, toffee, fruit and peat smoke. This could almost be Caol Ila. The finish is medium, smoky, with drying notes of oak. An extremely well structured, traditional malt whisky. - www.whisky-pages.com
...Light amber/marigold color; excellent purity. Smells of sawdust and pecans in the opening sniffs, plus a bit of summer flower garden (carnation) and spice (nutmeg); there’s an acute nuttiness to the aerated bouquet that becomes more like candle wax with further exposure to air; intriguing and unique. Entry taste is cocoa-like, bittersweet and nicely textured, almost oily (a plus); midpalate stage reveals an intensely grainy core flavor that’s both astringent, slightly sweet and caramel-like. Concludes in a stately manner that’s bittersweet, honeyed and refreshing. A superb blended whisky. Highly Recommended www.spiritjournal.com

2013 The Ultimate Edradour 9 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Cask #276Highlands, SCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 58.7%We've imported a number of these incredibly dark Edradours over the last few years, however, at least in terms of colour, cask #276 probably tops the lot. Edradours in this series are reported to be of consistently high quality with sweet, sultry notes of wood, honey, dates, tobacco and liquorice typical of the flavour profiles. A rep for the bottler, Van Wees, mentioned that they're having an increasingly hard time procuring top casks, so don't be surprised if we see much less of these in the future. Matured in a first-fill sherry butt for nine years, the yield for this edition was 672 bottles at 58.7% Alc./Vol. And yes, the colour is all natural! Non chill filtered. Extremely limited stocks.
Since 1994 The Ultimate Spirits Company has been bottling gems from the likes of Port Ellen, Springbank, Ardbeg and Bowmore. The company's primary objective remains the seeking out of interesting (and foremost) very tasty casks, some old, some younger but always worth the spend. Founded in 1921 as tobacco merchants and currently in the capable hands of Maurice van Wees, who started working in the whisky business in 1987, he follows in the footsteps of his father, Han van Wees - the first man to import Single Malt into the Netherlands in the 1960s (before then, only blends were available). It has been quipped that Han ‘taught the Netherlands how to drink whisky’. He was appointed with the Master of the Quaich in 2018.
Nowadays, a key characteristic Van Wees looks for when reviewing casks is that the wood influence should not be overpowering. "For example", explains Maurice "we have bottled many casks of Rosebank from straight bourbon barrels, the vanilla only complemented the Rosebank character. Others like our Longmorn bottlings from oloroso sherry butt stood out for their complexity and dark sherry influences... We have bottled over a thousand casks now and all of them are my babies. Bottled for enjoying life and bringing pleasure to people all over the globe." When asked if he has any personal favourites, Van Wees adds, "I believe every distillery can make great whisky as long as it is matured in a good cask. Too many bottlers rely on a distillery name to raise interest but we believe only a good cask can bring you good single malt which in it’s turn will make people notice it. Lately I was personally amazed again by the taste of one of our Glen Spey bottlings. Around the same time I was offered a cask of Ardbeg which I declined because the spirit was not good enough. So it differs every time but bottom line is that an independent bottling should bring you that bit extra."

Deep dark red purple core with black toned edges and a bright purple red hue. The delicious, deeply fruited palate features an abundance of dark cherry, raspberry and red liquorice flavours over an earthy incense, clove and spice back drop. If you didn't already know, Watt Whisky are Campeltown based, so it's appropriate that they chose a local blend to commemorate their 100th cask. They've pumped up an already very good malt with more than a teaspoon of something quite special (we're informed that it's a Glen Scotia that's had a good “ladling” of 28-year-old Springbank). Fun, different and apparently, it doesn't taste immature. The yield was 246 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Attention, this was the 100th bottling from Watt Whisky aka Campbeltown Whisky Company Ltd.! That’s worth celebrating! As usual, we’re a bit late to the party, but bravo Kate and Mark! Colour: light gold. Nose: well now, this is more engaging – there’s a touch of engine oil, linseed oil, amaretti, pumpernickel spread with fresh butter, even a few tiny oysters, all layered atop the classic apple and pear base. With water: a brand-new Harris Tweed jacket. I swear. Mouth (neat): we’re back on oil, oyster shells, a few drops of petrol, a dab of light peat, and even hints of diesel and acetone, Jamaican style. Truly. With water: right, at heart it’s still apple, beer and barley. Finish: same again – apple, beer and barley – though there’s a persistent saline tang hanging in the background. Comments: absolutely lovely! Bravo! 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Xanadu’s Reserve range of wines represent the very best that the estate is capable of producing in a given vintage. The 2020 vintage is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot with maturation taking place in French oak (40% new) for a period of 14 months.
Exceptionally deep in colour it features a pitch black heart and deep dark red black tinged hue. The highly sophisticated and intensely perfumed nose features a classy aromatic profile of red to black currants, violets and mulberry intermeshed with some dusty cedar, tobacco, subtle black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich and concentrated yet possessing Bordeaux like refinement the palate is embellished with delicious red to black currant and mulberry fruits. Traces of red liquorice, vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco characters and delicate infusions of bay leaf play a supporting role. Beautifully framed with a fine grained tannin structure it has an expansive feel across the palate. Finishes very long and aristocratic.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

What’s the point of writing anything about this wine? Really. But you’ve come this far so I’ll add the reason: It’s complete, exceptional and beguiling. The best Margaret River cabernet exemplifies those alluring characters. OK, you want to know more. It’s heady with mulberries, cassis and damson plum, wakame and squid ink. Medium bodied, plush and velvety across the palate thanks to sublime tannins with an outrageously long finish. This is irresistible. Drink by 2048.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThere have been some wonderful 2020 cabernets from Margaret River but none better than this. What a glorious statement of the region and a great vintage. Highly perfumed aromas of mulberry, dark chocolate and blackcurrant with a little plum and dried herb edging in. The palate is full-bodied with immense power. Black fruit, dark plum and some wild berry action with oak that has been almost lyrically laid. Bright and vital with a lithe expressiveness that is pure joy. Cellar 20 years.

There was so much to love in this Pinot, from its complexity to its sapidity to its long length. With a ruby hue and a slight tinge of purple, it is bright in colour but also aroma, showing bountiful red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, confectionery, forest floor and musk. The palate is full of flavour yet it’s refined and not over the top, with the brightness of fruit carrying from the first sip to the last. A highly enjoyable wine.
