Pale salmon pink in colour, alluring scents of peach, raspberry and pomegranate drift from the glass followed by some musk and wet stone notes. Slippery textured, delicious peach, raspberry and strawberry fruits make a beautifully rounded entrance onto the palate. Notions of musk and wet stone ensue. Dry and brisk it finishes long, silky smooth and ultra moreish.

Château Fontis is located in the town of Ordonnac. The vineyard has an elevation of up to 38 metres on the highest ridge of the Médoc, offering a beautiful view of the Gironde estuary. About twenty years old, it has 10 ha of vines planted with equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon resting on soils made up of Pyrenean gravel and limestone. The wine is aged in vats and new barrels.
Made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Charming the olfactory senses are delightful red to black currant aromas which are trailed by hints of tobacco, dusty cedar, black olive and spicy dried herb notes. Rich yet elegant and finessed, the mid weighted palate is blessed with delicious red to black currant and red cherry fruits which overlay vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco characters, dried herbs and spice. Fine grained yet structural tannins make their presence felt yet remain in perfect balance. Concludes long, savoury and refined.

Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 2020 Haut-Bergeron, which incidentally comes with a special label to celebrate its bicentenary, has a very pure and perfumed nose with dried honey, white peach, saffron and Japanese yuzu. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with impactful concentration, pretty spicy with stem ginger and lemongrass. Very fine. Drink 2024-2040.

The 2018 Haut-Bergeron is pale to medium lemon-gold colored and has a seriously citrusy nose of key lime pie, baked lemons and pink grapefruit with touches of allspice, beeswax, Manuka honey and coriander seed. The palate is rich, spicy and decadent with a pleasant oiliness to the texture and a seducing finish.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from the satellite Saint-Emilion commune of Lussac on Bordeaux's right bank. From vines with an average age of 45 years old this wine sees no oak and is aged in concrete tanks for a period of 12 months.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Lifted red to black currant aromas mix with hints of red liquorice, earth, black olive and spice. Mid weighted, nicely fleshed and possessing good richness, a mix of red to black currant and liquorice fruits are featured over an earth, dried herb, spice and faint leather back drop. Nicely integrated fine grained tannins. The savoury finish showing good depth.

I loved the nose on the 2018 Château Jamard Belcour, including its classic Right Bank red and black fruits, chalky minerality, chocolate, and cedar pencil aromatics. These carry to a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant, seamless red that shines on all accounts. I'd be thrilled with a bottle on the dinner table, and while it's drinking great today, I see no reason it shouldn't keep for at least 7-8 years. Drink 2022-2030.

Certified organic this is blend of 99% Grenache and 1% Syrah is only produced in exceptional years and comes from the two best plots of Grenache on the estate with vines aged between 50 to 70 years old.
A liquid dynamite, pleasure bent Grenache.
Deep black dark red core with black tinged edges and a red to dark red hue. Intense red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and dark cherry aromas flood the nostrils followed by notes of fresh herbs, subtle incense and peppered earth. Rich, exuberant and succulent the lavish palate is awash with a super concentrate of dark to black raspberries, dark cherries and liquorice that possess incredible torque and dynamite like power. Infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth and peppered dried meats are largely obscured by the gobs of gorgeous, seductive fruit. Silky yet structured tannins concluding exceptionally long and juicy yet slightly chewy in its feel.

A rich, voluptuous Ventoux that concludes with a blockbuster finish.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Pronounced black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils with notions of cassis, provincial herbs, scorched earth and spice also evident. Rich and lush the full bodied palate is a concentrate of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits interspersed with infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth, spice and pepper. Voluptuous texture with ripe chewy tannins and a long blockbuster finish that’s full of succulence.

Launched in 1992, this is one of Poland's super premium brands made exclusively from Stobrawa potatoes, mostly sourced from nearby the distillery to maximise freshness. The vodka is distilled four times following a six century old tradition. Founder and CEO, Tadeusz Dorda sums up the brand's philosophy: "We believe that the definition of vodka – “a flavorless, odorless, neutral spirit without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” – is simply incorrect. We also reject the popular notion that all vodkas are the same. The flavor profile of our marquee product, Chopin Potato Vodka, is distinctively creamy with earthy notes and sets the standard in its category."
Master Distiller, Waldemar Durakiewicz, has worked with the Dorda family (who still own and run the company) since he graduated from university in 1978. Named after Poland's favourite son, the vodka is packaged in a frosted, cork-finished bottle which has since been copied by the likes of Belvedere Vodka and others.

“Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. Rich, silky and super intense, the seductive palate is saturated with voluptuous waves of aniseed, blackberry and dark plum which gradually evolve into a leather, dusty vanillin cedar, black olive and pepper back drop. Exceptionally powerful and expansive it possesses cashmere like tannins and finishes tremendously long and plush. Tasted from a 750ml bottle we expect the magnums to look even more impressive and show less development.

It’s hard to believe the 2003 Syrah Astralis Vineyard could be better, but it offers riveting richness, intensity, purity, and equilibrium. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. Another 50% ABV flavour hit. Despite the provenance, the peat is dialled down allowing the soft stone fruits to get a showing. The texture is mouthwatering and comes with a keen sense of cured meats; Rich cereals are the keynote. Oily peat rises through the finish, but never asserts first place. The overall effect is very pleasing - perfect for drinkers who don't mind a wisp of smoke in their whisky. Bourbon cask matured. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Currants with samphire. Very coastal – smoked mackerel. Brazil nuts. PALATE: More samphire/seaweed notes with a salty-sweet kick (sweet peppers). FINISH: Salty-tingly finish. Smoked meats on the finish.

This will be new to most whisky lovers. Given the recent boom in both blends and single malts, companies like Pernod Ricard have been challenged to invest in expanding existing capacity or in building new projects, like Dalmunach. Established in 2015 on the site of the now closed 'Imperial Distillery' and named for a nearby pool in the River Spey, Dalmunach is one of the industry's babies but with a nod to the past - several of Imperial’s key design features have been adapted into the design. Pernod Ricard is the parent company of Chivas, so no doubt the majority of Dalmunach's output will be making its way into leading blends like Chivas, Ballantine’s and Royal Salute. From a 2015 distillation, Claxton's have bottled up a youngster, with an added twist of been matured in a red wine barrique. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Right, a red wine finish, so I doubt we'll manage to get to the core of Chivas's Dalmunach today. Colour: salmon/blush wine. Thighs of a moved nymph, as 18th century painters would have said. Nose: fun. Burnt strawberry cake, natural rubber, Lambrusco and stewed peaches. Whiffs of peonies. With water: a little smoke, hints of bay leaves, Timut pepper, leaven, baker's yeast…Mouth (neat): but-this-is-good. Strawberry cake, touch of rubber once more, vine peaches and now wham-bam raspberries and cassis. Phew. With water: pretty good! No deviant berries, rather more malt, kriek, maraschino and just one goji berry. For glory. Finish: medium, perhaps more on blood oranges, with some terry pepper and some discreet cloves. Comments: this has been done with restraint. Extremely far from the disaster I was expecting, even more so after I had checked the colour. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Third generation winemakers Tom and Sam Barry of Jim Barry fame run the Clos Clare operation. This is their sixteenth vintage from Clos Clare's Riesling patch of 53 year old dry grown vines which adjoins the historic Jim Barry 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale.
Brilliant water like core with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts. Intense lemon and lime scents leap from the glass followed by orange rind, chalky talc, wet steel and mineral notes. A pure concentrate of Riesling, the palate is awash with mouth filling lime, citrus and orange rind flavours. Possessing outstanding power and drive the back half sees chalky talc and steely mineral elements race across it. Crunchy acidity finishing exceptionally long and scrumptious.

The Clos Clare patch is comprised of 53-year-old riesling vines, for this wine. It's such a pristine, bony and tense expression, refreshing and moreish as it comes. Scents of lime and green apple, chamomile, ozone and flinty mineral qualities, the palate a reflection of these descriptions through and through. A chalky pucker to texture, light on – let's say delicate – but packed with fruit and mineral qualities. Beautiful poise and precision. Lots of words to say 'this is a ripper drink', and wonderful in the prime of its youth. Drink by 2035.

Am I right in thinking 2023 was a good vintage for Clare Valley Riesling? On the back of 2021 and 2022.
A whole lot of flint and crunch and energy here. It’s bony but has flavour, there’s lime zest, lemongrass and spice, bath salts, a grapefruit and lemon sherbet zing, and a smattering of green herbs. Acidity is pure and firm, and the finish is very long and tight, with white pepper to close. No shortage of texture. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036+

From an 18-hectare estate planted at a density of around 10,000 vines per hectare, the 2019 Clos Manou is a serious wine. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, cigar wrapper, licorice and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with terrific concentration, lively acids and plenty of ripe, powdery tannin that will reward a bit of bottle age. It's closed with an Ardeaseal technical cork as used by Burgundy's Domaine Ponsot among others. This estate merits a mention in any list of Bordeaux's finest under-the-radar producers. Delightful red currant and mulberry scents stream out of the glass with some earth, subtle dried herb, light tobacco and spicy cedar notes also chiming in. Mid weighted, elegant and showing classic Bordeaux structure, the palate is layered with delicious red currant fruits which meld into a spicy cedar, dusty earth, tobacco and dried herb background. Sturdy in it’s feel with fine, graphite like tannins, it shows ample freshness and has an appealingly firm, spicy red fruited conclusion. Great everyday drinking Bordeaux.

...Two of my favourite things in life, Clynelish and jazz, connected in a bottle of whisky! The label seems to show a young Sonny Rollins playing the trumpet in a rather 'Miles' stance (trumpet heavily pointing downwards), an unusual sight indeed but why not? One day I'll tell you about the time I almost had an argument with Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry at a Miles Davis concert at the Nice festival, but that's a story for another time… Yes, I know, I've already promised I'd tell it. Colour: pale gold. Nose: quite an unusual nose, initially on adhesives and varnishes, then on dough, cut grass, and apple peel. Water should awaken all this (in lieu of using a trumpet). With water: the proverbial wax, absent at cask strength, suddenly comes out of the woodwork, so to speak. It becomes both simple and beautiful at once. Old apples, beeswax, tangerine peel. Palate (neat): it's very tense, very lemony and on green apple, with a bit of cane sugar and quite a bit of green tea. Citrus liqueur but no wax so far. With water: water works miracles, here is a pure Clynelish, taut, without frills. Finish: long, fresh, and, you guessed it, on wax, citrus, and apple. Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple and lime aromas engulf the nostrils with some wet stone and fresh herb notes also evident. Delicious juicy ripe pear and red apple fruits flood every corner of the mouth with some lime and wet stone characters lingering underneath. Boasting terrific concentration, volume and brisk acidity it finishes long, textured and incredibly moreish. A fantastic example of Soave.

These BIB releases are what Australian Bourbon lovers really miss out on. Even if you can find them, the prices are often prohibitive. Score one as good as this and the deal gets sweeter. From a fresh bottle, it's a little prickly and smells like varnish, leather and hazelnuts, but later goes deeply caramelly, nutty, dried fruit and Bounty Bar-like after additional exposure. Spirity and warm, though not without a serious injection of sugars; by mid palate it turns buttery, maple-like, rounded, even soft. The finish offers toasted tea biscuits, bitter chocolate, crushed mint and a gentle, oaky astringency. The reigned-in spirit is nicely harmonised and the quality of the wood really shines. You have to love the evolving character of this ballsy, compelling, and at moments, luscious Bourbon that demands patience to show its very best. 50% Alc./Vol. No mash bill stated.

Overall fantastic in terms of being not too heavy, not too light, just the perfect balance that allows you to hold it in your mouth and really chew on it. It’s not overly complex, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable... E.H. Taylor Small Batch is really a contrasting bourbon. On one hand you have a really full-flavored bourbon that can almost go head to head with it’s bigger brother E.H. Taylor Single Barrel and holds it’s own. On the other hand you're paying slightly more for the presentation of the packaging for the bourbon it contains. While I wish this sold for [a little] less, there’s no denying that it’s a really solid bourbon that most individuals will enjoy. The palate is delectable and sans the heavy alcohol upfront, the overall flavor profile is enjoyable. For 124 years, five generations of the Bujanda family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavasa and over the years the estate has expanded to include vineyards across the region.

First released in 2014, Craigellachie's 13 year old is a perfect introduction to the distillery's heavy distillate, partly the result of short fermentations but also due to enormous stills with straight lyne arms adding reflux. Even from a 30ml sample, it's a whisky with terrific depth. Fruity, almost floral aromas hint at lucerne mulch and new leather, slowly giving way to ripe orchard fruits - especially green apples. The palate sports delicious, buttery-malt and spicy pear flavours with more pepper, late fruitiness and lingering spices. Some tasters also note a slightly sulphury / smokey edge (think spent matches). This style won't be for everyone, but it is undeniably one of the more distinctive malts in its price bracket. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Light amber. The initial impression is one of bulk. There are heavy florals — think lilies and stewed white fruit, and just-overripe banana — but this is given a mysterious extra heft by an underpinning of a light meatiness, accompanied by a tiny lift of (good) sulfur. The palate is, unsurprisingly, thick and creamy with huge fruit that fills the mouth. A highly physical, old-style Speyside dram with classic distillery character. ...You couldn’t make a label look more ‘retro’, could you! Unless you start using hieroglyphs or cuneiform alphabet. Colour: straw. Nose: it is a milder, rounder and sweeter version of the 2003, but the background is similar. Wee touches of mezcal again, a little earth, a little sulphur (spirit sulphur) that borders almondiness (what?), plenty of apples and then a few raisins and a touch of vanilla. It’s got a style, and that’s just great, even if it does nose a little young, almost as much so as the DL. Mouth: a few burnt notes in the attack, notes of distillation, cooked sugar and herbs… But it gets then cleaner, maltier and slightly smoky, with a bitterish edge. May lack a part of the DL’s vibrancy (as the pros say.) Finish: rather long, between candy sugar and this bitter side. Grapefruit skin. Comments: mixed feelings here. On the one hand, I find the honesty and the nakedness fantastic, it’s not botoxed whisky at all. On the other hand, I find it a little raw and bitter. Craiglee is one of the most important historic vineyards in Australia, with vines originally planted there in 1863 by one of Melbourne’s founding fathers, James Johnston. Energy was injected back into Craiglee when enthusiastic agricultural science graduate, Pat Carmody replanted it in 1976.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with subtle flashes of green around the edges and a watery hue. Nosing offers up ripe peach and honeycomb aromas followed by hints of bacon fat, butterscotch, crème brulee and spicy nougat. Rich fleshy ripe peach, apricot and honeycomb flavours carry a silky feel with notions of crème brulee, subtle bacon fat and spicy nougat sitting underneath. Nicely measured acidity finishing long, full and creamy textured yet fresh.

Another chance to snap up the World's Best Whisky for 2016 in a one litre format.
The Gimli Distillery situated on the shores of Lake Winnipeg in central Canada is one of the world’s most remote distilleries, as well as being home to the Crown Royal brand. Although Canadian whisky is commonly known as rye, this new CR edition is one of only a handful which is actually made from near 100% rye grain. Most others are distilled from corn or wheat with rye and other flavourings added. Jim Murray gave the Northern Harvest Rye a record-qualifying 97.5 out of 100 points in his 2016 Whisky Bible commenting: “Rye, that most eloquent of grains, not just turning up to charm and enthral but to also take us through a routine which reaches new heights of beauty and complexity. To say this is a masterpiece is barely doing it justice.”

Tasting note: Brilliant amber gold. Fabulous purity with whiffs of apple/peach tart and fresh-picked mint over vanilla wafer biscuit, pencil shavings, hints of gum and green banana. Crisp and spicy in the mouth. The rye is assertive, oily, dense. An almost brittle mouthfeel. Finish offers buttered ryvita biscuit, vanilla custard, cocoa, pepper and sustained mint freshness. Crown Royal Black is a more robust and intensely flavoured take on traditional Canadian whiskies, which often place emphasis on 'mellowness'. This expression is not only extra-oaked, but also bottled at 45% abv, which is unconventional given that high-proof bottlings fell out of common practise in Canada around the 1950s. It pours a deep bright copper / mahogany colour and follows with sweet, heavy scents of dilute maple syrup, vanilla wafer and cocoa. A soft, light entry leads into a semi sweet burst of vanillan oak, light maple syrup and lively spices with a touch of rye kicking in the finish. It's finally medium dry and gently peppery with fresh cut wood emerging late into the aftertaste. All-round a richer offering than your standard CR, and with zipped up spiciness, bourbon drinkers should enjoy this as an alternative, as should lovers of PX matured malts. 45% Alc./Vol.

...Not exactly black. (More like russet, but Crown Royal Russet isn't as catchy.) It's nice to see the higher strength, and there's definitely more flavor here than the standard Crown Royal or Crown Royal Reserve. But it's missing the smoothness and elegance I cherish in other Crown Royal whiskies. Notes of molasses and maple syrup, accentuated by burnt fig, hints of pedro ximenez sherry, and raisin. Crown Royal Black is, as you may expect, an added-oak version of the venerable Crown Royal Canadian whisky. In this case, “black” is no joke. It may very well be the darkest color whiskey I’ve ever encountered, a deep hazelnut color in the glass. The spirit in a full bottle is nearly opaque. This concerned me. Over-oaking is a serious risk in whiskey, and the worry of a ruined whisky was on the top of my mind. The good news is that Crown Royal Black isn’t too far gone. Yes, it is oaked to within an inch of its life, but Crown has taken it just to the edge — and brought it back again. The body is sweet like standard Crown Royal, but laced with intense oily wood notes, cinnamon, black pepper, and dried figs. Surprisingly mild for 90 proof, that wood character even overpowers the alcohol out of the spirit. Long and smoldering finish, like a campfire turning to ash. That, of course, has good and bad connotations. I expect CR Black may be too much whisky for many. Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exceptionally perfumed the nose features a wonderful array of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise aromas followed by some forest floor, fresh herb and delicate spicy cedar notes. Seductive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are sprawled across the palate with great power and intensity. Notions of forest floor, delicate anise, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar linger through the finish. Supple in its texture with silky smooth tannins and a complimentary freshness it concludes long and expansive.

Matured in some new but predominantly older French and American oak barriques for 18 months. Magnificent colour saturation featuring an inky black heart along with a very deep black dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are aromas of dark plum and liquorice infused with smoky cedar and graphite followed by some dried meat and blackpepper notes. Rich, plush and youthfully energetic the generously weighted palate is swamped with luscious, freshly crushed blackberry, liquorice and blueberry fruits. Fine grained tannin structure with inky earth, spicy vanillin cedar and pepper characters lingering through the back half. Chris Bendle’s entry level Pinot Noir is a blend of two vineyards in Kangaroo Ground and Woori Yallock, from the Northern and Southernmost points of the Yarra Valley. With a similar ripening period, but distinctly different soils, MV6 pinot noir from both vineyards was picked within a period of 1 week and treated in a near identical manner whilst being kept entirely separate.
Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red to dark red hue. Pretty and fragrantly expressive out of the glass the nose is grabbed by scents of dark cherries, strawberries and violets which are flanked by some fresh herb, subtle forest floor and delicate spicy cedar notes. Light and elegant yet richly fruited, red to dark cherry and winter strawberry flavours overlay a violet infused back drop of fresh herbs, forest floor and spice. Possessing excellent freshness, depth and drive it has polished tannins and a long persistent finish.

Winemaker Chris Bendle’s day job is at Hoddles Creek Estate but he still finds time to work on his own venture, DCB wine, sourcing fruit from a vineyard in Gladysdale in the picturesque Upper Yarra. The 28 year old vines are planted on an east facing slope and maturation takes place in a mixture of barrique and demi muid barrels.
Rich yet wonderfully refined, this delightful Yarra Valley Chardonnay possesses a degree of sophistication rarely seen at this price.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a greenish tone to the edges and a watery hue. Drifting out of the glass are aromas of white peach and nectarine which are complexed by hints of dried honey, cashew, nougat and spice. Rich yet wonderfully refined, the mid weighted palate is greeted with a flavour profile of white peaches, nectarine, dried honey, cashew, nougat and spice that are delivered with more than ample concentration. PHI is the 21st letter of the Ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. The Lusatia Park vineyard was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2016 having been previously the source of some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in the Yarra Valley. Fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches the resulting wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak barriques for a period of 7 months.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and hints of clove blossoming out of the glass. Lending further complexity are forest floor, brambly cedar and spice notes. Gorgeously fruited and supple in its feel, a power wave of dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb are layered across the palate with superb depth. Silky smooth tannins with notions of brambly dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also chiming in. Expansive with a long peacocks tail like finish that’s incredibly moreish. Winner of 4 trophies at the Victorian Wine Show.

This has good weight and depth without being heavy. A touch savoury, too, and the tannins are silky and long. Already a joy to drink, this will still be looking good four to six years from now. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec that was matured in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 18 months. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Attractive scents or red to black currant and mulberry show excellent intensity out of the glass as they morph into vanillin cedar, tobacco, earthy black olive and bay leaf notes along the way. Richly fruited, the mid weighted palate features supplely textured blackcurrant and mulberry fruits over a cedary tobacco, earthy black olive and spicy bay leaf back drop. A fine grained tannin structure lends polish to the long, refined finish that’s brimming with sublime red and black fruit.

If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. The rum market in Australia has increased exponentially and the overall quality is superb. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad.
Aside from the familiar Caribbean island groups, more and more people are becoming aware of a ‘mainland’ rum tradition. Think Nicaragua, Gautemala, Panama or Venezuela. The latter, already famous as the spiritual home of the rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, is now finding its rums eclipsing that legacy. The country has a number of highly regarded offerings, but those from the Distilerias Unidas in La Miel on the northern slopes of the Andes lift the bar highest.
Their Diplomatico label is the international reference.
We prefer to let what’s inside the bottle do the talking, but it is impossible to overlook this venture’s remarkable accumulation of twenty plus international awards since 2007 (54 medals in contests worldwide), including the SIP Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Miami Rum XP, Monde Selection and other big guns. Even if the show circuit is irrelevant to you, a different kind of achievement came in October 2011 when the company’s Maestro, Tito Cordero, was honoured at the Golden Rum Barrels Awards as the World’s Best Master Blender. He was the first Venezuelan to receive the award. Given that so much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product, this was the rum world's supreme commendation of Cordero's skill and outright quality fanaticism.
A reinvigorated project that stemmed from an early Seagrams investment in the 1950s, passed on to Diageo, and is now in the custody of the Ballesteros family, the distillery is adjacent to the Hacienda Saruro, where much of the sugar cane is grown. Average daytime temperatures of 30-31C drop by 6-7C at night, a differential which when coupled with high humidity benefits cane growth: it concentrates the sugars and favours the ageing process. Different varieties are grown to make sugar honey and molasses. Molasses is preferred for the light rums, sugar cane honey for the heavy. While many producers are struggling to get molasses with a sugar content above 45%, Diplomatico are ahead of the pack before they even begin. Venezuela regularly achieves upwards of 60%.
Not unlike other distilleries, here pot stills are for richness and weight, column stills for adding freshness and elegance. Between the two are batch kettles that carry out secondary distillations of semi-heavy rums. Varying proportions of each create a hierarchy of styles. Barrel regimes vary, including ex-bourbon with some re-filled single malt whisky casks. Sherry casks are now being experimented with to great effect, as the 2000 Vintage release bears testimony. Finishing departs from the mainstream, as most Diplomatico rums are given only a delicate filtration prior to bottling - gentle enough to maintain fatty acids and maximum mouthfeel - then filtered using 3 micron-thick filter pads. It is minimal interference by world standards, Cordero considering it a formality to ensure the rums retain their clarity and brilliance when exported to cooler climates.
Diplomatico's flagship cuvee is aged for up to twelve years and typically blended from around 80% pot still rums; the remaining 20% are lighter styles from column stills. Cordero mixes a little cane sugar prior to blending which is another reason why the flavour seems amplified compared to some others in the stable. Stylistically this edges Ron Zacapa 23 for satisfaction and sheer saturation and is the one that many of our customers measure other rums by. Those whose taste preferences tend towards the savory may misunderstand what is an unashamedly dessert / quasi- liqueur styled effort that falls into a sub-category of its own. Almost as decadent as a rum can get without cloying the mouth and falling out of balance - there are more complex rums around, but not near this price, nor do they have the same uncanny ability to incite superlatives. The packaging depicts Don Juancho Nieto Melendez, who was a noted rum enthusiast in the town close to the distillery. It's reported that, being something of a globe trotter, over many years "...he amassed a large collection of rums which he took great pleasure in offering his guests at the lavish dinner parties he held at his house."
Tasting note: Brilliant copper with a gold hue. Heady and decadent scents of creme caramel, fresh coffee, chocolate fudge, vanilla and spice. A silky, creamy mouthfeel yields a plush array of dried fruits, raisins and coffee-caramel, counterpointed by a gently warming spirit heat. Perfect balance, seamless integration. Very long, mouth coating aftertaste of vanilla and liquorice strap with a subtle dark chocolate finale. Avoids the too sweet trap. A stunning rum that will instantly convert many a Muscat or PX Sherry drinker. This remains one of the most re-purchased spirits on our shelves. 40% Alc./Vol.

The appellation Jurançon is well-loved by sommeliers and found in all the best restaurants of France and around the world, yet sadly it remains off the radar for many wine lovers. Nearly 500 years ago the future King of France Henry IV, was baptised in Pau with the traditional garlic and a spoonful of Jurançon wine. That year was 1553 and just five years later in 1558 a small rural property was entered into the register of lands under the name Caussapé. And it was on this property in 1980, then his parents’ farm, that Henri Ramonteau established Domaine Cauhapé. Since those beginnings on just one hectare, Henri has built up the estate to today’s area of 47ha and become the most renowned producer of Jurançon wines, both dry and sweet.
A blend of 30% Gros Manseng, 30% Petit Manseng, 30% Camaralet, 5% Lauzet and 5% Courbu Blanc fermented in stainless steel and matured on lees for 5 months.
Bright straw colour with a faint glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Exotic aromas of pineapple and guava mix with ripe yellow peach, citrus and distinct honeysuckle notes. Bursting with energy the palate features an exceptionally concentrated flavour profile of pineapple and guava fruits that show plenty of textural volume. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Ripe peach, honeycomb and crème brulee aromas flood the nostrils trailed by hints of bacon fat, citrus, nougat and spice. Gently creamy in its texture yet fresh the palate is decorated with white peach, dried honey and subtle cashew favours which linger over a back drop of citrus, biscuit and spice. Bright, lemony acidity with a river stone like feel to the long, detailed and elegant finish.

Agreeably cool and pretty aromas combine notes of pear and apple with those of citrus confit and anise. There is excellent density to the very punchy and nicely delineated flavors that also culminate in a very dry, clean and focused finale. This isn't exactly rustic though neither is it particularly refined. Drink to 2024+.
