    Kentucky, UNITED STATES

    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Other reviews... The first permanent addition to the Basil Hayden's portfolio mingles Kentucky straight rye with Canadian rye, plus a splash of Port-style wine from California. All this yields a warming whiskey that leads with caramel and spice on nose and palate, finishing with a hint of cocoa and a distinctly juicy, almost tart cherry note. Sip or mix. 90 points - wineenthusiast.com

...Simple and sweet up front, it feels thin, like fake maple syrup, with more sweet vanilla carried on a rather light body, almost resembling some rice whiskies. 84 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...A blend of Kentucky straight rye, Canadian rye from Alberta Distillery, and California port. Dark Rye was the first permanent line extension in the Basil Hayden lineup, initially released in 2017. Now four years later, the brand has experienced a bottle design refresh consistent with other bottles in the portfolio. Notably, Basil Hayden’s label has changed from “Basil Hayden’s” to simply “Basil Hayden” on all bottles as part of the redesign... A full-flavored fruit-forward affair that continues to deliver four years after its initial release. Not every whiskey is for everyone, and Dark Rye is certainly a good example of this. Its fruit-forward almost to a fault, with maybe a bit too much focus on the maraschino cherry flavor note which will undoubtedly be off-putting for some. Is Beam cheating time by blending with port instead of finishing in port barrels? Sure they are. But a heavy port-forward, readily-accessible, and fairly-priced whiskey is the result, and my guess is most of Basil Hayden’s fan base doesn’t really care if the port is added directly to the blend so long as they enjoy the end result. If you enjoy both red wine and whiskey, Dark Rye will probably be something you’ll enjoy as well. - breakingbourbon.com

What will be a new American whiskey brand for many, Black Maple Hill is neither a distillery nor a place, rather it's an independent label owned by Paul Joseph in San Carlos, California. David Driscoll, from K&L wine merchants in the US knows Joseph well and is better placed to tell the story than ourselves. (See klwines.com for full details.)

"Paul pays Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (Willett, Vintage 17, Pure Kentucky, Noah's Mill, Rowan's Creek, etc.) to make this blend for him and then he slaps the label on it. So, in reality, Black Maple Hill is a [whiskey] that's blended in Kentucky, but owned by a nice man on the San Francisco peninsula.

There have been some other BMH bottles besides the standard Bourbon formula. Older ryes and older Bourbons were once available, but lately it's been tough just getting the regular expression – which is all that exists at the moment. Because Paul gets his Bourbon from KBD, he has no control over his own supply. Worse yet, KBD doesn't control their own supply either because they don't make any whiskey (although they did just recently begin production). The reason the Black Maple Hill is in short supply right now is because Bourbon is in short supply, and when you're third on the totem pole, you just have to wait your turn. It's an independent label purchased from another independent label."

Note: there is a (barely visible) crack in the perspex sliding front beneath the word 'rye'. The bottles were originally glued into the box for transport which has led to a tiny rip on one label. Otherwise excellent condition. One only to sell.

If you've already had the pleasure of tasting Thomas Handy, Van Winkle Family Reserve and Sazerac 18 and are looking for a new rye sensation, here it is. Aged for 13 years, one month and twelve days, this limited edition Bookers has received rave reviews from the likes of Jim Murray, declaring, "If this is not world whisky of the year for 2017, it will be only fragments of molecules away." Rating it a whopping 97.5 points Murray added, "for a big well matured rye it simply doesn't come better than this...brain draining and mind blowing..."

Other reviews... Is this perfect? From the look and nose, yes. Rich caramel and campfire smoke early on; it’s robust, but balanced. Crème brûlée with a sultry smokiness, raw honey with a dusting of nutmeg and a Scotch ale malt profile that’s creamy and mouth-coating. Alas, a heavy bite hides much, needing water to open up. A drop adds complexity, spice, vanilla, chocolate, and licorice.

"the rye here really is deliciously on song!" - Jim Murray

92 Proof is considered Catoctin Creek's "distiller's reserve", made by selecting about one barrel in ten: "Because all of our spirits are single barrel expressions, we noticed that some of the barrels were taking on a more complex taste, and more spice and hints of citrus. These we began setting aside as our "distillers reserve" and we bottle it at 92 proof. The 92 proof is our most popular product internationally and in New York City."

Tasting note: Bright polished copper. Complex and expressive with choc-peppermint, dark rye and light pepper followed by sponge cake, vanilla and candied citrus peel. Oaky and slightly acidic on entry and spicier than the nose suggests. More creamy and soft textured in the mid palate stage with flavours of tea biscuits, vanilla and a late surge of spicy warmth. Suggestions of peppermint chocolate in the aftertaste adding freshness and balance. A broad appeal 'Bou-Rye' style with plenty of character. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

"Chewy & profound... so much flavour." - Jim Murray

Founded by Becky and Scott Harris in 2009 as the first legal distillery in Loudoun County, Virginia since Prohibition, "Catoctin" (pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin), derives its name from the Indian tribal word "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer".

There's a conscientious pursuit of high quality food and spirits at the distillery where preference is given to organic grain and fruit, sourced locally when possible. Beck Harris heads the team as chief distiller.

While many craft distilleries claim the title of 'handmade,' or 'small batch', Catoctin walks the walk. The venture is going from strength to strength with an ever-growing number of significant awards.

Catoctin's "Cask Proof" rye results from an "impulsive" selection of used Chardonnay casks, Bordeaux casks and x peach brandy barrels which are used to finish the whisky.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper / thick legs. A five minute bouquet that's relatively closed in the early stages. Peppery spirit recedes with exposure slowly upping the intensity and introducing notes of rice pudding, leather handbag and mint choc-chip cookie. Creamy, soft entry preludes and intense, bittersweet, peppered rye, vanilla and mint chocolate attack. Well balanced, with the mid palate flavours carrying through to a cough lozenge fade. Generous and sweeter styled. 58% Alc./Vol

A 100% Rye, aged in new Minnesota white oak casks for a period of approximately two years (depending on the weather of the season). This is the distillery's most popular product.

Tasting note: Brilliant brassy gold. Presents an aromatic amalgam of cinnamon apple, dark rye bread, peppermint and vanilla; follows through to a medium dry, lighter bodied vanilla / almond pastry and subtle orange zest profile with a velour mouthfeel and moderate length. Ends with a soft flurry of sweet spice and a subtle mint choc-chip cookie / white pepper fade. Well rounded and accessible, but the rye isn't jumping out here. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Quint family has farmed and distilled spirits for generations. In 2005, Jeff Quint founded Cedar Ridge in the beleif that it was time for Iowa – the number one corn producing state in the U.S. - to share its homegrown Bourbon with the world. It became the first licensed distillery in Iowa since Prohibition. After releasing their debut whiskey in 2010, Cedar Ridge became a recognized player in the American craft spirits movement, winning multiple awards such as the American Distilling Institute’s “2017 Distiller of the Year” or “Best American Craft Whiskey” at the 2016 New York World Spirits Competition. Cedar Ridge use malted rye in the mash bill. The rye grains are soaked in water to germinate, then given a blast of hot air. Malting the rye generates an enzyme that's naturally helpful in the mashing process and adds weight and complex flavours of toast and biscuit to the whiskey. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sharp, even a bit of a sour edge, and some stemmy grass. Sweet and chewy grain in the mouth, with a nice touch of oily rye bitterness, some hot oak that quirks the tongue a bit, then a finish that melts into creaminess. 85 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Lew Bryson 2015

...Nose: Lots of corn, grain, and new oak. There’s a tingling of ethanol that makes its presence known, but not enough to be to unpleasant. While this is aged for a minimum of four years, it comes off as a whiskey that hasn’t spent a ton of time in the barrel due to the lack of depth displayed in its weak nose.

Palate. Corn, light vanilla, fruit jam, a hint of pear, and oak. The palate is more interesting than the nose, however all of the flavors present are very light and you really have to hunt them out. The ethanol that was clearly present in the nose isn’t present, and this bourbon ends up drinking lower than the 100 proof it clocks in at. Finish: White pepper, light fruits, vanilla, and fresh wood are all present at the start of the finish. These notes then fade away to just the white pepper and fresh wood, which linger for a short period. It’s simple, short, and leaves an unmemorable impression. - breakingbourbon.com

Rye has experienced a strong resurgence in the American whiskey landscape. This small batch, bottled-in-bond 100 proof straight rye pays tribute to the former distillery owner. According to producers, Buffalo Trace, it is “An altogether different recipe and profile than Sazerac Rye, containing just rye and malted barley, no corn. The result is an aroma full of dried fruit, black pepper, and touch of fresh dill.”

Other reviews... Very different than other straight rye whiskeys you might be familiar with: there's no corn in the recipe, just a large percentage of rye and a small amount of malted barley. It's youthful, with spice as the defining character (cinnamon, mint, allspice, freshly ground pepper), balanced by blackberry preserve, caramel, butterscotch, and a hint of cotton candy. Lingering dried spice and polished oak on the finish provide balance to the sweeter notes. 50% Alc./Vol. 85 points

Another fascinating departure from the mainstream comes in this 15 month aged craft "whisky" from Virginia produced from a mash bill of 2/3 rye and 1/3 hand malted barley. (The grain has also been kiln dried using 60% applewood and 40% cherry wood). Technically, this is not permitted to be labelled as whisky in the USA as it's not been matured in new charred American oak casks. Instead, aging took place in first and second fill bourbon casks along with the inclusion of new and used apple wood and oak chips. Double pot distilled and bottled in January 2015 at 45% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [14 month old tasted / bottled 2013] crisp meaningful rye with bells on....purely from a tasting perspective: beautiful! Probably as good a rye type yet to come out of Sperryville. Just need to work on the label. 91 points 45% Alc./Vol. - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

[Previous batch tasted] A 2:1 blend of rye and “hand-malted barley” lightly smoked with fruitwood, aged with apple and oak wood chips in used bourbon barrels, finished in another used bourbon barrel, aged 12 months total. Was it worth it? A good rye smell, with fruit notes; quite appealing. Relatively smooth, and the smoke comes through quickly, with sweet pepper spice and vanilla. Not overly complex, but well-made and pleasant.

Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $125. 00

    ABV: 45%
For early German immigrants to America, rye had been the primary grain used in the production of Schnapps and Vodka back in Europe. Consequently, Scotch-Irish immigrant distillers had some exposure to using rye in whiskey production . They continued this distilling practice, particularly in Pennsylvania and Maryland, where Rye whiskey, with its distinctive ''hard-edged'', grainy palate, remained the dominant whiskey type well into the 20th century. The genre largely disappeared after Prohibition, with only a few remaining producers. In the last few decades we've witnessed a significant resurgence in Rye - and not only in the States.

Using high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients and a grain bill of 80% rye, 15% barley malt and 5% rye malt, the team at Dad's Hat have committed themselves to creating traditional Pennsylvanian rye. Their recipe was formulated by working with the Artisan Distilling Program at Michigan State University over a two year period. The mash undergoes a week long fermentation before double distillation in a traditional 500-gallon pot still with a modern side column that can tailor the process to craft a flavourful, but clean spirit.

Tasting note: Brassy gold. A little shy with dark rye bread, peppermint tea and whitepepper evident on the nose. Light entry builds to a medium bodied , gently peppery mid palate with drier styled flavours of apple mint, rye cracker and restrained vanilla sweetness. Concludes fresh, lightly peppered, delicate, minty and impressively long. Elegant for the genre, but rings true in every other respect. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Going back to colonial days, Pennsylvania had a long tradition of distilling sweeter, more robust Monongahela rye—also called Pennsylvania rye. Dad’s Hat is giving that style a resurgence. The bright and fruity scent mixes vanilla and tropical fruit. The flavor also has a funky edge, like overripe bananas and honey, finishing with sparks of spicy ginger. Silky texture.

Aged 6 to 7 months in quarter barrels. Sharpish, oaky nose with a sweet grain/golden syrup backing. Spirity in the mouth, with a big slap of young oak up front that quickly subsides, yielding sweet corn muffin, white pepper, and dry cocoa that linger into the finish. Hot, but worth the burn. Some nice components here; age and a bigger barrel could do a better job on integration. 81 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Winter 2012) Reviewed by: Lew Bryson

Another new batch to FEWs line up is a majority-rye married with the sweetness of corn for a 'softer' interpretation. First encountered back in 2015, this is now pretty seamless as far as ryes go: All the signatures of the grain are clearly expressed, from the wisps of apple and mint through the nose, to the juicy mouthfeel and pepper streak through the finish. The texture is fabulous, the length sustained by oily rye and peppermint chocolate. It's an impressive new batch, and a seriously solid rye by any measure. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2015: Pale gold colour is slightly turbid. Offers up scents of beeswax over stewed apple and cinnamon. Time in the glass yields hints of white pepper and cut grass however the focus remains on the mouth watering, apple strudel like qualities. Light, supple entry develops into a concentrated, juicy, beeswax profile framed by firm rye spices accentuating towards the finish which is momentarily rye bread-like, trailing off beeswaxy, dry and closing a little short. Quite compelling. 91 points

Other reviews... The cleanest FEW whiskey I have tasted to date, the grain positively sparkles. And the way this whiskey has panned out... regrets? Too few to mention. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...Reviewing craft-distilled American whiskeys is still a matter of degrees, especially when the craft distillers venture into the stylistic territory staked out so strongly by the established traditional distillers. The benchmarks of bourbon and rye are well-known, and to openly declare your competition with them is to invite direct comparison. I call it the “Evan Williams Test”: is this craft whiskey good enough that I’d buy a bottle of it instead of yet another $14 bottle of the reliably well-made Evan Williams Black? Only the very best craft whiskeys can stand up to that. By that test, Few Spirits Rye is clearly in the top tier of current craft whiskeys. Although it’s young, the whiskey is well-made and clean in character, not funky and flawed, which still counts for a lot these days. As I said in my review (an 89 score), “Straightforward rye crisps out of the glass in no-nonsense style; dry grain, sweet grass, and light but insistent anise almost wholly drown out the barrel character.” It’s backed up on the palate, where you’ll get more rye, some tarragon and dry mint spice, and then some oak in the warming finish. That light barrel character is hardly surprising in a young rye, and we’re not going to see much but young whiskey out of craft distillers for a while yet. So high marks to Few Spirits for making a very good young rye, one I’ve been using as a benchmark ever since I tasted it. 89 points - Lew Bryson, whiskyadvocate.com

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.4%

Whiskey Hunt Australia's first barrel pick for 2023 has just landed. This time round it's a blend of straight ryes finished in an Oloroso sherry cask for nine months, selected by Master Distiller, Brendan Coyle. Since making tracks in Australia over the last decade, High West has become highly regarded for their distinctive rye bottlings. It was founded in 2006 by David Perkins and his wife, Jane. David, a former biochemist, was inspired to open his own distillery after seeing the parallels between the fermentation and distilling process and his own work in biochemistry during a trip to Kentucky. In 2004, David and his family relocated to Utah and distilling kickstarted in 2007. What was once a small operation in downtown Park City has grown to be an internationally-recognized, award-winning brand. This special bottling offers a novel, engaging, pepper-studded rye experience for fans of the category, starting out dry and savoury with layers of nutty complexity before finishing on a sweeter thread of dried fruits and apply-rye that resonates for over a minute. It's great stuff for drinkers, and collectors will love the 'antique' glass presentation that reflects David Perkin's lifelong passion for all things 'Wild West'. 313 bottles are on offer for Australia only at 49.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Cherry tart, chocolate covered pomegranate seeds, balsamic glaze, vanilla custard, Brazil nuts. Taste: Caramel drizzled figs, spiced banana bread, cinnamon sticks, toasted walnuts. Finish: Cola, clove spice, worn leather.

Batch No.1 of a now incredibly rare High West bottling. One only.
Produced from a mash bill of 53% Rye, 37% Corn and 10% Malted Barley, this sourced whiskey (rumoured to be from Barton or LDI) was aged for over two decades in second fill (used) barrels, so technically it's not legally a “Rye.” (Almost all American-made whiskies are aged exclusively in new oak). Old oak as opposed to new oak means less wood influence allowing rye's peppery spice to shine through. Even better, it's non chill filtered.

Other reviews... If there was a dessert whiskey this would be it - smooth and sweet with a hint of spice. Smooth. So smooth. I can’t say it enough. It’s hard to believe this is 92 proof. It’s also hard to believe it’s even a rye and aged for 21 years in a barrel. It’s light in color and low on spice. I could drink this all day every day - I’d stock my shelves with this if it was available and more reasonably priced. This is an impeccably balanced whiskey with a delicious flavor profile. I find the Sazerac 18 to be subtle - this is like an even more subtle version of that. Don’t get me wrong, this is a phenomenal whiskey. However, the 21 years are not absolutely obvious, and it has less spice than I typically want in a rye. 53% Alc./Vol.

This was later changed to 6YO and 16YO material in subsequent batches. One only.

High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller, David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah. A now discontinued bottling that's a marriage of two straight rye whiskies: A two year old with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% barley malt from LDI (now MGP) combined with an older rye with a mashbill of 53% rye and 37% corn from Barton Distillery. Both are finished for an unspecified amount of time in x Californian Shiraz barrels and x vermouth barrels. All reports suggest it's another excellent release from High West.

The nostalgic front label is from a historic poster at the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody, Wyoming.

Other reviews... [Batch 1 tasted]. High West Double Rye is transferred into vermouth and Syrah barrels, making for an interesting limited release. Herbs, blackberries, black currant, and black pepper are vibrant, followed by a medicinal hint of mint. The vermouth comes alive, with earthy notes meeting the rye’s traditional spices, a welcome back and forth with hints of black fruits. The warm, medium-length finish offers another hint of mint. If you like vermouth, you’ll love this.

One of the last whiskeys produced and selected by distilling legend, Dave Pickerell.

Before his untimely death in November of 2018, Dave Pickerell had established himself as a towering figure in the American whiskey industry. Fourteen years Master Distiller for Maker’s Mark, a luminary of whiskey knowledge and one of the nation’s pre-eminent distillers, he famously helped start WhistlePig and went on to consult to over one hundred distilleries. His final post was as Master Distiller for Hillrock Estate. Here in the Hudson Valley he was working to perfect what he’d started at WhistlePig: a true grain-to-glass estate rye: Grown, distilled, aged and bottled in the northeast, where rye whiskey originated with the founding fathers.

This is a rare opportunity to own not only a truly great rye, but one of the last whiskies produced and selected by the now legendary MD. The mash bill for this specially dedicated edition consists of 70% rye and 30% corn. Labelled as ‘Dave’s Pick #1’, it's a 6.5 year old whiskey aged first in a #3 char American oak barrel before moving to a #4 char barrel. While it needs a few minutes to dissipate the overwhelming dry, woody notes, the nose develops aromas of old books, leather, oak shavings, walnuts, cocoa, pepper and distant peppermint. It’s a fabulously robust, tactile, chewy rye that's expansive towards the finish, climaxing in a flood of coffee cake, vanilla cream and wood spices. The aftertaste adds flashes of rancio, caramel fudge and old fortified wine, checked by late tannins. As a single cask, it's difficult to compare with any mainstream rye. It comes bottled at high proof and limited to 623 hand-numbered decanters which are sure to be on collector's radars. 57.5% Alc./Vol.

Beautifully oily and bitter rye character slides across the tongue on a wave of sweet caramel and vanilla. Young, but in the eager intensity of rye, not the clumsy heat of bourbon. Rye shines here, from the first whiff to the last bitter curl on the tongue, and the wood deftly sweetens and soothes. Nicely done.

Rye has always been a part of the Jack Daniel's mash bill, but it's never taken the lead. Until now. First offered around 2013, the Rested Rye release continues on from the Unaged (white) Rye offering (batch 1). Produced from a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley, it was aged for two years in new barrels with a combination of toasting levels. At the time of release, it was first new mash bill to be used at the distillery in over a century. Now quite collectable. One only. 40% Alc./Vol.

There are varying strengths in the James E.Pepper releases: Cask strength, 100 Proof, and now this 46% edition. The slightly lower ABV keeps it affordable, without compromising too much of the flavour intensity.

The Pepper family brand is a Kentucky icon, initially produced during the American Revolution and through to 1967. The family built and operated two main distilleries: first founding the site that today hosts the Woodford Reserve Distillery, and later the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. In the late 1960s the bourbon industry hit hard times, and both the label and distillery in Lexington were abandoned for over half a century. In 2008, James E.Pepper was relaunched by whiskey entrepreneur Amir Peay. A decade-long campaign of thorough historical research and collection of historic materials was used to retell the lost story of the brand and to distill new stocks of "Pepper" whiskey (visit the History Page to learn more). To initiate the relaunch , partnerships with the Lawrenceburg Distillery in Indiana and the Bardstown Bourbon Co. in Kentucky were formed.  Today some of their whiskies contain spirits distilled at those distilleries. After a multi-year construction effort, the historic James E. Pepper Distillery—which after fifty years of neglect had fallen into a terrible state of disrepair—was completely rebuilt and restored. In December 2017, the distillery once again began distilling whiskey using the same historic recipe as when it shut down in 1967.

A solid addition to the James E. Pepper Bourbon is this Rye whiskey made from a majority rye mash bill (over 90%) and bottled non chill-filtered.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Attractive toffee apple and pepper aromas show restrained sweetness. Air contact accents the vibrant peppery qualities along with suggestions of apple strudel, becoming more rye bread like in the final pass. A gentle entry builds to a generous, mouth filling profile of punchy baked apple, orange cake and spicy rye flavours; the heat is kept in check. Dries towards the finish with hints of peppermint lozenge emerging. Aftertaste is more rye bread-like with subtle dried apple notes persisting into a lengthy peppery fade. Maintains terrific vibrancy to the very last. 50% Alc./Vol.

Rye whisky was the traditional American saddlebag whisky. It is, as its name suggests, simply made using a larger proportion of Rye as opposed to corn. Rye whisky must be produced at no more than 160 proof and be aged in new, charred oak barrels for at least two years to be designated 'straight'.

The older "yellow label" bottling from Jim Beam is reported to be very similar to the current "Pre-Prohibition Style" release. Albeit at a lower ABV. Scoop this up for an easy nostalgia hit.

Tastes wonderfully mature, yet full of vigor.

Despite this, its age, and presumably expert selection and blending of barrels, are what has made Kentucky Owl’s rye batches stand out. I might not have been blown away by Batch 1 when I first had it last year, but it is one that I haven't gotten out of my head and something I return to whenever I can. That says a lot about Kentucky Owl’s rye batches. They’re really good and very drinkable. That was what Kentucky Owl set out for with Batch 2, and they certainly succeeded. Add to that the fact that 11 year old ryes aren’t easy to come by, and just maybe you can overlook its high price point. With a lack of readily available competitors, Kentucky Owl Batch 2 might win just by showing up. - breakingbourbon.com

The American craft distilling movement continues apace with several upstart producers now treading their wood aged wares on Australian shores. We sampled a number of white spirits last year (gins, vodkas) as well as a few young whiskies and liqueurs. The quality was generally very commendable, with one or two complete surprises. Repeat customers are vital if these ventures are to thrive and with a dearth of big marketing dollars, the standard of their product is their most viable avenue for promotion.

The buzz surrounding micro distillers both in Australia and in other parts of the world gives pause to consider exactly what should be classified as a ‘micro’ / ‘small batch’ / ‘craft’ operation. Call it what you will, as they continue to multiply, how do we differentiate them from other distilleries? Noted American spirits writer, F.Paul Pacult, offers one approach: “Craft distilling is difficult to define, much like “Small Batch Bourbon”, which likewise has no legal definition. Here’s our stab at it: Small, independent and aligned (meaning supported by large, mainstream distilling companies) distillers who produce distillates in less than 10,000 cases quantities per year should be considered authentic craft distillers. Any distillery that produces more than 10,000 cases, whether independent or aligned, is, in our view, a mid-range distillery.”

Independence and tiny output seem to be key criteria. The former provides the conditions for innovation, while it’s the latter (in part) that makes this possible. Upstart, small scale operations will (almost always) be inherently experimental via the process of ‘discovering their soul’. Do-it-yourself stills, single barrel trials, unusual wood finishes, grains from all corners of the earth - these are just some of the ingredients that make craft distilling so exciting right now. Our coverage of the American movement continues with new arrivals from the Koval and Few distilleries.

Founders of Koval (est.2008), Robert and Sonat Birnecker, gave up academic careers to bring the distilling traditions of Robert's Austrian grandfather to America. Five organically grown grains (Rye, Oat, Wheat, Millet, and Spelt) are harvested locally for distillation into single grain whiskies. These unfiltered single cask offerings are classified both organic and kosher.

Tasting note: Pale brass / gold appearance. Crunchie bar. All shortbread and honeycombe; the sweetness drops a notch as oak and spice overlap the initial aroma. Light to medium bodied, exceptionally soft textured. Mildly spicy, dilute toffee apple burst at mid palate fades into a delicate, clean, drying aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Michter’s has previously released a ‘toasted barrel Bourbon” in which second aging occurs inside a barrel made from 18-month air dried wood that’s toasted but not charred. Now comes this cask strength rye, also finished in a custom barrel “specifically designed to enhance the spice character in the rye while adding hints of dark toast and smoke.” The ABV will vary slightly from batch to batch.

[Batch L17D682 tasted] Deep polished copper with thick legs. A dense bouquet; momentarily Bourbnesque with resiny, oaky sweetness before the rye completely overwhelms with fresh mint, stewed apple, dustings of cocoa and vanilla icing. Soft on entry, then tannic and bittersweet followed by an intense attack of oaky sugars and peppered rye; Finish is fresh, mint-like, vibrant, spicy; gradually sweeter as the sugars return. Ends long, elegantly poised, with hints of dried banana and cocoa lingering through the final stages. The flavour lasts for minutes. Fabulous rye. 54.1% Alc./Vol.

Unmissable. A shame so little was produced!

First offered in May 2015, this was the second limited edition from Michter's and one of a few in the range to be labelled as a 'barrel strength' release and received huge praise including 99 points from The Tasting Panel. The whiskey is matured in flame-charred new American oak barrels, typically yielding ABVs between 54-56%. Very small allocation.

[54% bottling tasted] Bright brassy-amber with considerable legs. A sensational rye bouquet. Densely packed with fruit and grain; poached apple, clove and cinnamon meld with peppery rye and mint freshness. Enormous, crunchy rye in the mouth with a surging, oily, peppery, mildly bittersweet attack that hints at apple pie, ryvita biscuit and peppermint. Beautifully integrated. Follows through with late barrel sweetness and the mid palate stage repeating in the aftertaste. A robust and compelling statement whiskey that's unmissable for fans of the genre.

Other reviews... Michter's appear to prefer a black cherry countenance. And there are no complaints here, not least because we are up there with the truly great rye whiskeys. [55.6% bottling tasted] 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...A bold and dark tasting rye that stands out for its unique flavor profile. Michter’s has a knack for taking sourced whiskey, offering it with next to no fanfare, and managing to reach an respectable quality bar all while making the whiskey their own. I’ve been continually impressed by the company’s releases, notably their Sour Mash Whiskey and Single Barrel Rye. That continues with Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Rye. With a forcefulness spotlighting its rich and darker tasting flavor profile, it does well to differentiate itself from the market. With the amount of sourced products available it can be hard to get excited for yet another one. Michter’s is an old company that has gone through drastic changes and the company from 40 years ago or the company from 10 years ago, isn’t the company it is today. But perhaps from their longstanding tenure they’re able to pick and choose great barrels that exhibit a bit more than you’d expect. So far, that is the case with every Mitcher’s product I’ve tasted. - breakingbourbon.com

...Nose: Rich might be the easiest way to describe this release. The nose is full of butterscotch sweetness, vanilla and cocoa powder. Its nose is almost as rich and fragrant as the Michter’s older releases, like their 10 Yr Old Bourbon (a personal favorite). Palate: This release reminds me of honey cinnamon graham crackers with hints of apple poking through. It is a beautiful release that is full of flavor, and fulfills the promise of the nose. In many ways this reminds me of their older releases (like the 10 Yr Old Rye and the 10 Yr Old Bourbon) so for that alone it must be applauded. The texture is silky smooth for a good while before it gets spicy and the oak appears at the finish Finish: Long, sweet and spicy. It’s definitely a rye but still holds true to Michter’s established house style The addition of water rolls back the smoothness of the release, bringing on a sweet menthol burn in its place. The rye makes more of an appearance and cuts through the candy sweetness that is a Michter’s trademark. This is an amazing whiskey. It definitely became something I wanted to stock up on (especially as it is a limited release). It gives you a lot of what you’d expect from an older release. As good as the Toasted Barrel was, this is even better.

There are three tiers in the Michter's range - which is a little confusing at first. The "US*1" expressions are the entry level expressions, so named to honor Michter’s heritage harkening back to America’s first whiskey company. Washington and his troops drank Michter’s while they were hunkered down in Valley Forge. Then come the age statements, 10-20 years, and finally, there's a selection of ultra-aged 25 year old+ super limited bottlings. Those who have followed this brand for longer than we have should also note one further clarification with regard to the provenance of the current bottlings. Joshua Feldman from www.cooperedtot.com explains:-

"I love Michter's. But which Michter's? There are two. There is what we'll call "old Michter's" the Pennsylvania distillery in Schaefferstown that people known as Michter's - and which marketed itself as Michter's but was actually named Pennco for most of the recent past and Bomberger's Distillery before that. That distillery has been closed since 1990. It is most famous for one particular 1974 contract run of Bourbon made for a guy named Hirsch and aged for a heck of a long time.

Meanwhile, there is a brand of Bourbon, whiskey, and rye sold in many stores called Michter's which is made by an unrelated company... We'll call that "new Michter's". New Michter's has extensive distribution for a company producing small quantities - and an excellent reputation for quality offerings at the high end of their line. You frequently see particular issues highly sought after in the Bourbon enthusiast community".

Tasting note: [Lot L14B96 tasted] Deep polished copper colour. Heavy and compelling opening aromas of apple strudel and vanilla with a ginger and herbal tea edge. Unravels slowly over 3-4 minutes, coaxing out rock lolly and hints of menthol, followed by rye bread and dilute honey in the final pass. All the elements of its younger sibling are here, only extra time has mellowed the spices in a beautiful way. Unfolding dried apple and cinnamon flavours with a honey accent on the finish carried by mild tannins in the fade, this goes long. A rye classic that's delivered with a soft touch. Bound to impress. 46.4% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Doesn't possess the obvious rye-rich traits of their barrel 19H1321, but the whole works far, far better. 96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...The first aromas are strong, nutty, and mocha-like; further sniffings pick up deep-seeded scents of walnut, new leather, flax-fiber and soft cheese. The sweet and honeyed flavor profile bursts onto the tongue in the entry stage, then turns drier, grape seed-like, and woodier at midpalate. Ends up incredibly honeyed. A tour-de-force rye whiskey that delivers at every level. — (6/1/2005) 96-100 points

First offered in 2017, this has become an ongoing release from Limestone Branch Distillery Co. It's young whiskey (around two years old) sourced from MGP in Indiana and produced from a mash bill of 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% malted barley. Casks from Meier’s Winery which previously held cream sherry were employed for the finishing period which will vary from batch to batch.

Other reviews... The sherry cask finish asserts itself right up front, with orange oil, sweet figs, cloves, and cedar; aromas of grape candy, peonies, spearmint, and allspice appear as well. While this is unabashedly a rye, with flavors of cinnamon, black pepper, and oak, the sherry comes to the fore again in the guise of grape soda, sweet cherries, and chocolate. The finish is sweet and oak-driven, with good length. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton (Spring 2019)

Another star in the American craft-distilling firmament is the Mississippi River Distilling Company. Started in 2010 by the Burchett brothers, Ryan and Garrett, what began as a crazy idea grew into an opportunity to create something that Iowa hadn't seen since prohibition - a chance to create truly home grown, handmade spirits. The brothers were fortunate enough to spend time in Germany training with some of Europe's finest to get the most out of their copper still, and in keeping with a micro distillery approach, 100% of the grains used to make their spirits come from within 25 miles of the distillery.

The boys offer the following introduction to their rye: "In 1846, William “Buffalo Bill” Cody was born in LeClaire, Iowa. During his storied life, he was regarded as a regular purveyor of whiskey. Legend has it that rye whiskey was his spirit of choice. So we had to make a rye!

Handmade from 100% local rye purchased from Dave and Jim Wherry in Fulton, Illinois. Our rye is a unique spirit that showcases the wonderful spiciness of this one-of-a-kind grain along with the delicate fruitiness that is often lost in rye whiskies. Rye is known for being a bold and spicy grain. We distill it very cleanly so you can experience a sweet fruitiness that is unexpected from rye."

Tasting note: [No batch noted on the sample] Bright gold. Initially subdued with unusual opening scents of newspaper replaced by attractive cut grass and subtle ryvita biscuit notes; suggestions of dried fruit too. A soft, supple delivery offers light bodied rye biscuit and fruit bread-like flavours with traces of vanillan oak in the aftertaste. Easy drinking and accessible. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [BATCH 5 tasted] A 100% rye whiskey, made from rye grown about 30 miles from Mississippi River Distilling. Strongly spicy and oily rye character reaching out of the glass and grabbing my nose; some surprising pastry and molasses notes hiding in there. On the sweet side, would prefer it drier. 83 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Winter 2013) Reviewed by: Lew Bryson

Six years old, single cask 95% rye (the remainder malted barley) chosen by WHA as this year's Halloween bottling, and despite the high rye content, there's ample sweetness for Bourbon lovers. Vanilla, ripe peaches and busy rye spices on the nose, then buttery-yet-fresh through the mid-palate with cocoa, muddled mint, lingering orange oils and superb staying power. If you like a bit of grunt and prickle, you get that too, but it doesn't demand water. Akin to a super-charged Sazerac, this exemplary, melt-in-your-mouth rye should have broad appeal while the price of admission remains reasonable. Barrel #714 is limited to 150 bottles for Australia. It offers the sharp, fruity nose and spicy, full-bodied palate so treasured by connoisseurs of American Rye which is now winning over converts in international markets. The original recipe for Pikesville dates back to 1890. Andrew W. Merle began bottling it in 1936. His son, Andrew Jr., distilled Pikesville until 1972. Ten years later, bowing to high costs and low demand, the brand was sold to Heaven Hill Distilleries of Bardstown, Ky. Mercifully, they continued the tradition.

Tasting note: Nose: A curious and delicious mixture of traditional British scrumpy cider and new car interior: this is traditional straight rye at its freshest and fruitiest. Taste: much lighter arrival than the nose suggests, even a hint of corn in there. The fruit slowly starts to return, but only after a sprinkling of brown sugar then a thumping measure of rye. Finish: that usual Heaven Hill rye bitterness on the ending plus some caramel-vanilla to sweeten things a little. Balance: not quite as in your face with the rye as was once the case. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 87

Moving beyond Bourbon and into rye, the Rebel Yell portfolio continues to expand thanks to Lux Row's efforts to re-invigorate the brand which dates back to 1849. The Small Batch rye is described by diffordsguide.com "...as spicy but approachable and also unusually fruity with dried fruit and burnt fruit cake flavours." 4.5 stars. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... “Aged 24 months.” In these debased times, they should be applauded for the correct labeling of this 2 year old. Somewhat hot nose of grass, cinnamon, Pixy Stix powder candy, and oak. Simple, sweet on the palate with a crisping of rye bitterness and oak. Easy-drinking and not overly young. Color me surprised: it’s well-made for inexpensive young rye. 84 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Lew Bryson 2015

...Way too young in that the grain and the tannin are barely on speaking terms. Negligible balance, though the light liquorice note on early delivery and late spices do salvage something. 83.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2021

    ABV: 46%

A straight rye from Indiana, aged no less than three years and composed from a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.

Other reviews... At first the nose is dominated by wood—pencil shavings and Popsicle sticks—but it soon reveals violets, blueberries, grape Kool-Aid, and peppery spice. The palate is dry, with nuts, herbs and spices, mocha, and semi-sweet chocolate; a few drops of water help with integration and bring out more fruit, including lemon meringue pie. It finishes nutty and dry, with coffee beans and a touch of lemon. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton 2020

...The tobacco nose is a bit of a poser: how did that get there? Or the spearmint, which helps as you try to chew things over in your mind. The big rye wave on delivery is supported by mixed dark sugars, yet something ashy about the finish. 85.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...A delightful rye whiskey that shows delicious aromas of graham cracker, roasted barley, aged honey, and vanilla cream. The mouthfeel is lifted and bright bringing forward seductive flavors of roasted pecan, black tea, and butterscotch. 92 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021

This is the last release of the Oldest Rittenhouse Rye series and a new benchmark for age (previous versions were 21 and 23 year old). If you can find any I suggest you grab it now it will probably be a collectors item. Bottling was very limited and this is the last there is in existence. This whiskey is produced at the scenic Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky home of numerous other whiskies- mostly bourbons - but also the Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond Rye (for 1/6 - 1/8 the money and much more available) along with a 80 proof version, and the Pikesville and Stephen Foster Ryes. This whiskey hails from the 1st floor of Rickhouse 00 which is quite a bit cooler than other floors, allowing this whisky to age without becoming overly done (as in too tired, too oaky or just old). This is a single barrel not a small batch from the mixing of a small group of barrels (which is a less distinctive product), so each barrel will be somewhat different from each other....

Exceptionally well made, unique and probably never to be seen again. A must have for a Rye Whiskey drinker and a benchmark whiskey to judge all the others. ... A testament to the skills of the distiller and the aging and selection . Sublime and wonderful.

Rossville Union Master Crafted Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Lawrenceburg, Indiana, UNITED STATES
    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47%
Midwest Grain Products of Indiana (aka MGP) are responsible for a large number of American whiskeys, providing high quality bourbon and rye to brands for years, but never releasing a label of their own. That changed in 2015 when they purchased the George Remus Bourbon brand and more recently launched a rye under the Rossville Union name. The entry level rye is a blend of 51% and 95% rye mashbills made from whiskies aged 5-6 years.

Tasting note: Brilliant deep gold. Pepper and varnish in the opening passes before this finds better ground; toasted rye, apple tart, peppermint rock lollies and fresh cut cedar emerge. A full bodied, medium-sweet whiskey with lively rye and grilled corn flavours dovetailing into a richer, more oily finish. Gentle spice and mint chocolate mingle with the wood. The aftertaste is tangy, chewy and textural. Solid. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… The nose smells wonderfully chewy, with buttery toffee, candied nuts, charred oak, cracked pepper, and a hint of fresh dill. The palate sings with electric spice and rolls along nicely with stone fruit, peppercorn, sweet vanilla, and leathery oak, each taking their turn before the slightly hot finish of oak tannins.

...Great stuff. In creating this brand, MGP had the heady challenge of making a rye that didn’t taste the rye they make for everyone else, but at the same time, showing off the rye they make…which of course is usually made for everyone else. I think they’ve risen to the challenge. That familiar 95% rye recipe does come through but it’s subtle and nicely integrated. Their newer, more traditional 51% rye recipe seems to serve as the sturdy backbone here, tying together the mashbills and the oak, and providing an unexpected sweetness. Thanks to its relatively high ABV, it works great on its own, over ice, or in a cocktail. It’s great to see MGP finally bottling up their own rye, it’s no surprise that it’s very good, hell, that’s pretty much expected at this point, but nonetheless, it’s very good. Definitely recommended.

The Rossville Union ryes take their name from one of the original distilleries that was founded in or around Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Most sources state that the Rossville distillery began in 1847, but casual research doesn’t show who actually opened the business. In 1875, whoever owned it sold it to Cincinnati distillers James Walsh & Co., who expanded and successfully ran the plant until Prohibition. After being damaged by fire a year earlier, The Rossville distillery was sold to Seagram in 1933. Seagram in turn, expanded it even further. When Seagram finally imploded around 1999-2000, the distillery was sold off to Pernod Ricard, who ran it for a few years until 2007, selling it to CL Financial who renamed it LDI. CL Financial collapsed in 2009, but the distillery just kept working away. In 2011, it was sold yet again to Kansas-based, industrial distillers MGP Ingredients and I think that brings us up to date.

    Lawrenceburg, Indiana, UNITED STATES
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 56.3%

Drawn from eighty three 5-6 year old barrel reserves and bottled at natural strength, this sourced whiskey is reported to be a blend of MGP’s relatively ubiquitous 95% rye recipe. At barrel proof, Rossville delivers a full yet balanced expression.

Tasting note: Bright amber. The grain presents with dustings of cocoa and honey followed by an applemint / chocolate note... later distant aniseed, scents of pipe tobacco and chocolate box. A huge rye attack. The oily, buttery mid-palate stage is superb, while the finish unfurls in a flurry of spice, muddled mint and gently bittersweet oak. Great length and balance. Impressive. 56.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… The aroma is a mélange of sweet goodness, with violet candies, figgy dried fruits, and molasses cake that almost evoke a cane-like rum sweetness, as tobacco leaf, leather, and sassafras notes add depth. It’s a real roof burner on the palate, broad and mouth coating, offering a big blast of spices, cocoa powder, tropical fruits, and vanilla before the wood and minty herbs drive it to the finish line. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jeffery Lindenmuth (Fall 2018)

...The nose is a luscious mint-accented, rum-drenched, raisin bread pudding. On the palate, a juicy explosion of more mint and cherry cola, as semi-sweet chocolate-covered almonds unfolds and finishes with what can only be described as a movie-theater mashup of Junior Mints and Raisinettes. The references may suggest a confectionary level of sweetness to the experience, but the right touch of oak throughout the palate and finish keeps the drink from becoming oversweet and brings some gravitas to the spice level. On reflection between the 2018 and 2022 releases, Rossville Union Rye Whiskeys are showing themselves to be an exceptional and formidable collection of ryes, with consistency in the richness of its baking spice and vanilla characteristics, while offering different dials of the component sweet and spice base notes to make it an engaging pour from start to finish, and certainly one to watch out for annually. All told, it’s a really delightful and masterfully blended pour all around, and an incredible value. - drinkhacker.com

...As with the Straight Rye…great stuff.... The jump up in proof of course gives it a different feel, but their flavor profiles are fairly similar. Whereas I loved the winey-ness of the Straight Rye’s nose, here I loved the deep and vibrant palate – especially with a bit of water. The Straight Rye is the better one to use in cocktails, this one shines as a more rugged slow, neat sipper, or even over a large chunk of ice. The quandary comes with the price. This is a very, very good whiskey, perhaps a step up over the Straight Rye, but enough of a step up to justify the jump in price? That’s a tougher call. Still, definitely recommended. - thecasks.com

Ry3 Private Reserve Batch 004 Cask Strength Rye Whiskey (700ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    UNITED STATES
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.9%

Here's another first from the Whiskey Hunt Australia crew: Phenomenal Spirits is a blending house located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Master Blender, Matt Witzig, formerly of Joseph A. Magnus, brings his expertise and palate to the creation of RY3. Composed of three mash bills and three whiskeys chosen by three whiskey mates, it includes a 3 year old MGP 95% rye with 5% malted barley, a 4 year old Canadian 100% rye and a 14 year old MGP corn whiskey with 1% malted barley. The composition was blended and finished in a rum cask before bottling uncut. On the nose, the sharpness of the grain feels softened by the rum, which comes through like plantain and semi-ripe papaya over vanilla, rye mint and pepper. It takes a few tastes to adjust to the palate, which offers more intensity and typical rye spiciness, at first lean and oaky, filling out with vanilla and suggestions of dried peach or unripe pineapple. The aftertaste picks up the heat and prickle, turning astringent with oak shavings, peppermint, rye crackers and more plantain. One of only a handful of ryes to be finished in rum barrels, Phenomenal Spirits Founder and CEO, Karthik Sudhir comments “We developed RY3 Whiskey with curious consumers in mind, offering drinkers a contemporary and exciting Rye drinking experience.” Batch PR#004 comes with an outturn of around 250 bottles and is exclusive to Australia. 58.9% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [100 proof bottling] The blend of three whiskies (American and Canadian rye), three mash bills and three age statements add up to RY3, a sumptuous and heavenly honeycombed mouthful of peach nectar and maple bran. White pepper punctuates an otherwise seamless coat of orange peel, vanilla musk, and cigar leaf. At 100 proof, it shines. 95 points - tastingpanelmag.com (The Tasting Panel Magazine)

...Ah, the pleasant aroma of warm rye rolls nails its opening, but so much more awaits. Balsam, peppercorn, almond butter, arrowroot pie crust, pine nuts, pumpkin pie, brown sugar, and savory toasted rye bread tingle, as slight hints of pear, tobacco, and citrus develop. Then, it’s earth, from sautéed mushrooms to soil. The long, strong finish presents baking spices. Lovely sipping rye!

American Rye whiskies tend to be much more flavourful than their corn heavy counterparts, with peppery flavours including rye bread, peppermint and sometimes dried herbal notes. They must be produced from a minimum of 51% rye, the remainder usually made up of corn or malted barley. Like Bourbon, the law requires maturation in new oak barrels for a minimum of two years for the whisky to be designated 'Straight Rye". Some famous examples include Rittenhouse, Sazerac and Pikesville.
