Other Brandy & Eau de Vie

Many think of France and Cognac exclusively when it comes to brandy, however any country that produces wine (or fruit) typically makes brandy too. The genre has as many permutations as any spirits category, starting with classic wood aged expressions from the French regions of Calvados and Armagnac as well traditional European fruit eaux de vies, fine Italian grappas, Slivovitz, Arak, Marc and high end Spanish and Australian brandies - not to forget exotic unaged Piscos from South America. Everything brandy you'll find right here.

The palate is full bodied, plush and round with medium dry flavours of dates, cocoa and soft spice perfectly counterpointed by drying and slightly grippy tannins. ABV: 40%
In the 1990s, four brothers visited the Ica Valley in the southern central zone of Peru seeking land to grow products such as avocados, pecans and grapes. They came across a beautiful estate – Bodega Don Luis – located in the Juan Baustica district. This bodega, with the oldest Quebranta vines in valley, was noted for the outstanding quality of fruit they produced. Originally sold to other bodegas in the area, demand for the grapes grew to the point where the four brothers decided to reserve their own small production of pisco for family and close friends. The demand for their pisco grew. In 2002 the brothers founded Cuatro Gallos (Four Roosters) and increased their output. Their pisco has since been recognised nationally, obtaining the prestigious Gran Medalla de Oro in Concurso Nacional del Pisco in 2006.

Tasting note: Clear. Engages with fragrant raisin / white pepper opening sniffs followed by suggestions of oxidised grape / pomace. Light to medium bodied; builds towards the finish with moist raisin cake richness and gentle spices. Hints of green olive and mustard seed add further interest. Super clean and delicate, bordering on floral. 40% Alc./Vol.

Francois and Marc Darroze are the watchful and patient custodians of 250 different Armagnacs, including more than 50 vintages (spanning a century), sourced from the western portion of the Bas-Armagnac region, historically referred to as Grand Bas-Armagnac. Little surprise then that uber critic Robert Parker named Marc’s father, Francois, “the Pope of Armagnac”.

Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars. These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

Notes from Darroze... Nice golden and brilliant colour. Some fruit notes )quince, orange peels, apricot) are dominant in the nose. The further you go back in Delord's vintage series, the richer they get. Given ample air contact, the 1983 develops buttery aromas and flavours also hinting at baked pears, dried red fruits, pastry and nutty rancio. Its depth and texture make for a plump, soft Armagnac; polished, well proportioned, perfect to enjoy on its own and with enough acid to balance the dense core of dried fruits. 40% Alc./Vol. Bottled in June 2022.

The oldest Delord from a recent vertical is this flamboyant, chestnut coloured 1973, a once-off vintage dated expression. Benefiting from 5-10 minutes of air contact, it develops into a buttery, creamy-textured brandy boasting impressive depth including layers of sticky date, raisins and fruit cake as well as hints of dried flowers, backed up by vibrant spices. Oak is encroaching, but enough fruit character is retained - even if you have to roll it around your mouth to extract it. Showing off a feminine and refined side not often experienced in Armagnac, this will make for a sumptuous, end-of-the-night alternative to XO Cognac or sherried Single Malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 40%

Since 2018, the minimum for XO is ten years old (it was previously just six) and while the exact age isn't stated, this is probably a blend that includes some much older brandies. Typical for Armagnac are the scents of ripe plums, dried apricots, dark chocolate and gingerbread, complexed by hints of tobacco and hazelnut. They're repeated in a medium bodied palate where vanilla, cedary oak, liquorice bullets, cinnamon and pepper warmth carry the finish. The persistence is good, and being neither too fiery, nor too dry or sweet, Delord have created a better than average point of entry for newcomers to the category. It's also a friendly all-rounder, so apart from being enjoyed over ice, after a meal or matched with chocolate, nuts or dried fruits, this has enough body to work in cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Step away from Delord's core range and you get to explore their vintage dated series. These bottlings frequently deliver greater individuality and texture. A fine food Armagnac, the 1996 opens with a lifted, vibrant bouquet but loses intensity and definition after a short time in the glass. Residual notes of vanilla and rancio return on the palate where a thread of acidity cuts through flavours of prunes and cinnamon, adding freshness. The aftertaste is dry, nutty, warming and medium long. Bottled in May 2022. 40% Alc./Vol.

Bas Armagnac, lying to the sandier west of the Armagnac region, is where the Armagnacs are fuller but more supple with a scent of prunes or plums when a little of the spirit is rubbed in the hands. It is named for its lower altitude, rather than lower quality. In the Western part, Sablo-Limoneux is mostly sand, and makes acidic wine. Sablo-Fauves is rich in ferrous minerals that contribute to both colour and flavour in the wines. The Eastern part of Bas-Armagnac has boulbène, a heavy topsoil that covers subsoil of clay and sand. Bas Armagnac is one of the very few places where sandy soil is considered desirable. In fact, Armagnac from the Bas region is considered to have the most finesse, also tending to yield spirits that are very supple in their youth. Here is a case in point. The plump bouquet offers notes of toffee apple, dates, liquorice all-sorts, vanilla and cocoa, while the silky entry builds into a semi sweet, softly spiced, medium bodied brandy that’s very raisiny and fruit cake-like; a little broad at mid palate, though pleasantly spicy and balanced, it finishes with a long vanilla, raisin and cinnamon aftertaste. At 4-5 years old, fruity, youthful styles like this lend themselves to cocktails as well as offering the perfect introduction to Armagnac on a budget. 40% Alc./Vol.

Generous aromas of almond biscotti, vanilla bean and light cigar box; secondary nosings shift the emphasis to fruit cake, prune and hints of quince. Full bodied and well rounded with an early oak drive; flavours of walnuts and cigar box are followed by a sweeter, peppery burst of dried fig and fruit cake. Concludes warm, satisfying, finely tannic with vanilla, marzipan and drying oak in the fade. A classic big-boned Bas-Armagnac with plenty of personality. 40% Alc./Vol.

Like most of Delord's vintage dated releases, only a tiny volume of the 1989 has made it to Australia. The brilliant copper penny colour shines from the glass and follows in a soft, well-rounded bouquet, balancing fruit and wood: Figs, dried apricot, prunes, vanilla…a touch of shellac, while more air contact accents pepper heat and increased oakiness, becoming mildly sappy, green-wood like. The style here is medium bodied with dried fruit flavours and a thrust of pepper. Muted clove, vanilla and cigar box through the finish. In a word, robust. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Imagine you can get these old armagnacs for a song and a dance. Say around 100 Euros. Colour: deep amber. Nose: this old baby is struggling a bit after the last 1973 but it's making quite a creditable job. It's a more traditional style once again, rounder and softer, more on raisins and chocolate (you may add prunes as usual) with a kind of small earthy/minty side that only comes with great age. I mean, in spirits. Mouth: really good, but nothing really special and I wouldn't say the great age of this armagnac brought much more complexity. It's even a notch drying after a few seconds (cocoa), other than that it's all raisins. Finish: short, raisiny, with some tea (tannins). Comments: it's actually very very good, it's just that it lacks character. A smooth and easy old one, not much to add. No real malternative, in fact, just very good armagnac. 82 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

In Italy, Grappa production historically centered in the North above a line going from Venezia to Genoa. There were good reasons for this. Here, in the cooler wine regions relatively close to the Alps, unspoiled, fresh pomace, integral to quality Grappa was easier to source. Today, thanks to enological advances allowing pomace to be kept under inert conditions during transport, it's produced in every Italian wine region. Grappa's increasing popularity has also been driven by technological advances in distillation, specifically from the 19th century onwards, during which the term 'Grappa' became associated with specific production methods. The rise in quality led to the setting up of protected designations of origin, with Italy counting ten.

Not surprisingly, Grappa is produced in many guises, with regional specifity often associated with particular grape varietals, like Nebbiolo or Brachetto. They may be aged in glass only, when a fresher, more vibrant style is desired, but they can also undergo a maturation process in different types of wood.

In this case, 'Grappa Invecchiata' or Vecchia refers to spirits aged between 12 and 18 months in oak, bestowing a deep golden colour. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%
A 16 year old Bas Armagnac which has been matured in casks that previously held "Black Noble", a dessert wine produced by De Bortoli made from botrytis affected grapes. The juice is fortified and aged for several years in old oak resulting in a wine with aromas and flavours redolent of coffee, anise and toffee.

Tasting note: The pretty topaz colour is perfectly clear. Aromas of balsamic and oak shavings blow off to reveal restrained notes of apricot, dates, raw honey, liquorice bullets and spent oak barrel. Vibrant off-dry entry; flavours of prunes, cinnamon and clove; thins out at the finish which also accents warming spices and bitter cocoa. Finally almost rum-like as this rebounds with hints of dried banana, raw sugar and marzipan in the aftertaste. 47.5% Alc./Vol. 320 bottles.

With a focus on Bas Armagnac and La Ténarèze, the house of Gelas is today led by Philippe Gelas, representing the fourth generation of the family to take the reins. He has been running the firm since late 2001, carrying on in the innovative spirit of his forebears by introducing single varietal Armagnacs, emphasising alternative styles, as well as vintage dated bottlings, exclusively from the year of harvest stated on the label. The exceptionally old 1959 is one from the archives, with Australia receiving a miniscule allocation,

Distilled in 1959 and bottled in 2018, this remarkable wood-aged spirit promises a sublime brandy experience. At around 50-60 years of age, the wood has infused its full quota of tannins and aromas to the liquid. At this stage, explains Gelas, the Armagnac is typically decanted into glass demijohns where it will continue to age in storehouses built by Baptiste GĂ©las in 1875. The period in glass continues to develop the brandy, helping to harmonize the aromas and preserve the characteristic rancio notes. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The highly regarded Jacopo Poli distillery is an artisan operation solely owned by the Poli family, founded in 1898 in Schiavon, near Bassano del Grappa, in the hearth of Veneto, the most typical region for Grappa production. The grapes and pomace for this grappa (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc) were sourced from Tuscany’s famed Sassicaia vineyard. Soon after the pomace arrives at the distillery (still dripping with wine) distillation takes place in copper pot stills after which the product is aged for at least four years in Allier oak barrels, and another three years in bottle.

Tasting note: Very pale straw colour. Appealing, lifted aromas are salty, herbal and biscuity at first becoming sweeter and dried apple like (more peel than pulp) with aeration. After five minutes the aromas reduce rather than accentuate. Entry is silky. Mid palate shows good concentration and is at the sweeter end of the grappa spectrum with buttery, mildly nutty flavours followed by a creamy, vanilla custard finish. Aftertaste is clean and dry with a faint butterscotch / vanilla fade that’s a little short, however this seduces with its textural qualities and beautiful poise. 40% Alc./Vol.

Aeration intensifies the aromas as they take on an unexpectedly tropical fruit edge that’s one part lychee and one part passionfruit / feijoa with a slice of banana thrown in. Wow! Entry is soft and semi sweet, mildly glycerous. The mid palate develops with terrific length, as pear tart, lychee and feijoa flavours are accompanied by a spicy flourish. Finishes exceptionally clean, dry and fantastically long. Poli hits the jackpot here. 40% Alc./Vol

    Laird's Applejack (700ml)
    Virginia, UNITED STATES
    $91. 99

    $1103.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Laird's Applejack is a spirit new to Australia, but was first made in 1686 by Scotsman William Laird. Applejack was traditionally produced using 'freeze' distillation. A process that involved putting a barrel of cider outside to allow the bulk of the liquid to freeze, then collecting the unfrozen material. Considering most alcohols freeze at temperatures far lower than water, this process works very well in theory. The unfortunate flaw in the method was the collection fusel oils and alcohols other than ethanol, almost guaranteeing a rotten hangover for the early drinkers of Laird's. Still, this didn't stop George Washington, who himself was a distiller of renown. In fact, he personally requested the recipe after receiving the Laird family, and subsequently introduced Applejack to the rest of the Virginia colony.

Today, Laird's Applejack is made by blending 35% apple brandy with 65% grain neutral spirit. Rest assured, the distilling methods have evolved considerably since the late 1600s, though the immunity from the hangover cannot be guaranteed, especially if Applejack is consumed in the traditional "stonewall" cocktail, one that combines 1 part dark rum, 1 part Applejack and 4 parts hard cider.
