The 2008 Brut Vintage from Champagne Pol Roger is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 20 Grands and Premier crus vineyards located in the Montagne de Reims and the Cotes de Blancs. It is aged for 8 years before being disgorged and released.

A sublime vintage Pol Roger that every Champagne lover should have in their cellar.

Pol Roger rate 2008 as one of their great vintages and after tasting this Champagne it’s easy to see why. Showing excellent buoyancy a lacy white mousse eventually dissipates to reveal a base of pale straw colour with trimmings of pale gold. The bead is an exceptionally fine stream of tiny bubbles that are incredibly persistent. The nose alone of this superb Champagne sends you into heavenly spin. Heady, complex and rich, scents of oily baked bread, yeast lees, subtlety toasted brioche and citrus lead a merry dance through the olfactory senses with faint notions of cashew and dried honey also chiming in. Rich and refined the divine, creamy textured palate has a light airy feel to it yet is intensely flavoured. A crescendo of yeasty baked bread characters, subtlety toasted brioche, citrus, oily cashew and faint infusions of dried honey engulfing the mouth. Outstanding length and breadth finishing dry and crisp. Very long conclusion of baked bread, yeast lees, brioche, toast and oily cashew.

I have always loved Pol for its luminous, polished flavours and mouthfeel. Add the glorious ’08 vintage, its usual blend of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay seems reversed. It’s full of beautifully balanced stone fruit and citrus, achieved with a modest 7g/l of dosage after seven years on lees.

Fragrant winter strawberry and ripe cherry aromas dominate the nose with bready yeast lees, toast and light sherbet notes also apparent. The palate has a leanish mouthfeel and is relatively simple in terms of its complexity with flavours of red cherries and peach merging into some yeast lees, faint toast and sherbet characters. Excellent purple tinged frothy mousse that holds very well to eventually reveal an opaque dark purple black base colour. Super fine bead that shows excellent persistence. The nose offers up ripe blackberry and dark plum top notes over a touch of liquorice and vanillin oak. Full bodied and rich the palate is filled with flavours of ripe blackberries, dark chocolate and liquorice over a background of vanillin oak. Creamy mouthfeel with an aftertaste of dark chocolate, ripe blackberries, liquorice and vanillin oak.

Canelli, the home of Riccadonna Asti Spumante, is a 600 hectare area in the heart of the Asti province in Italy’s North West, not too far from the French border. Riccadonna is one of the three largest producers of Spumante in Italy and its Asti Spumante is typical of the fine sparkling wine for which that region is world renown.

The grape growing area of Asti is predominantly hilly. The production of this unique product is based on a technique that was invented and perfected in Piedmont, and is best remembered for its preservation of the characteristic aroma of the Moscato or muscat grape from which the wine is made. This light, sweet, white sparkling wine has 8 percent alcohol and is produced under strict regional controls so that it retains the fruit and floral aromas and honey spice characteristics.

Riccadonna Asti Spumante is pale gold in colour with a persistent bead and fine mousse. The bouquet is fragrant and inviting with floral muscat fruit and subtle yeast aromas. The palate is dominated by fresh, rich and flavoursome fruit complemented by a touch of sweetness and yeast characters. The sweetness is not cloying and contributes to the roundness and attractive mouthfeel whilst sufficient cleansing acidity is present to balance the wine, which finishes with lingering soft fruit flavours and excellent length.Fresh and easy to drink, Riccadonna is a classic sparkling wine in the Italian tradition, and owing to its moderate alcohol content, is the perfect sparkling wine for all occasions. The nose is not quite as exuberant as the first two McLaren Vale Sparkling Shiraz tasted in the line up exhibiting more subtle aromas of blackberry, plum, spice and a touch of earth. Rich and full bodied the palate is filled with sweet ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruit followed by some confectionary. Creamy like mouthfeel. Excellent length with long blackberry, liquorice and confectionary aftertaste.

Martin Fontaine is a steep parcel of Chardonnay planted at the top of the hill with a south/southwestern exposure located in the town of Noé-les-Mallets. The name appears to refer to an old water source at the bottom of the hill that no longer exists. The alternate name “Mort Fontaine” (the dead fountain) has been changed here to the more agreeable Martin Fontaine.

Fosse-Grely is a sélection massale planting of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at the bottom of the hill in Essoyes. Fosse means ditch, and Grely is an old local word that means gravel. Fosse-Grely is the largest parcel at the domaine, and was the first one planted by Bénédicte's father, Gérard, in the 1980s.

Fred Savart is one of the most engaging and energetic vignerons currently in Champagne. His wines are largely based on Pinot Noir, with a smaller amount of Chardonnay, and while initially there was a focus on fermentation in stainless steel, more increasingly his wines are raised in barriques and demi-muids. Each of his wines are born out of inspiration and intuition rather than any sort of set formula, and are routinely some of the best expressions of terroir viewed through the vagaries of vintage.
Le Mont Benoit is a 50-year-old single parcel vineyard in Villers-aux-Noeuds co-planted to 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay, which are picked and pressed together.

The 2017 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil/Oger is wonderfully extroverted from the very first taste. A rush of lemon confit, tangerine oil, white flowers and spice races across the palate, framed by sweet French oak that adds an exotic, flamboyant touch. I can’t decide if this is more wine or Champagne, but it is gorgeous. The style leans very much in the realm of exuberance, and yet all the elements are so skillfully balanced. Dried apricot, chamomile, crushed flowers, sage, mint and white pepper give this weightless, translucent Champagne tons of nuance. All the elements are so nicely delineated. Produced exclusively from Chardonnay in an Ecueil lieu-dit better-known for Pinot Noir is the 2015 Extra-Brut Premier Cru Le Mont des Chrétiens, a small cuvée that's vinified in 500-liter barrels, without malolactic, and it was disgorged a few months ago with only two grams per liter dosage—one gram less than Savart's usual three for this bottling. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of lemon curd, white flowers, fresh melon, pastry cream and mandarin, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and chalky, with a tensile profile despite the warm vintage, concluding with a mineral finish. Note that this bottling used to be named Dame de Coeur.

Due to be disgorged four weeks after my visit was the 2015 Extra Brut Premier Cru Les Noues, a new bottling from a parcel of Pinot Noir vines that used to go into Savart's l'Ouverture cuvée. Unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet that mingles waxy citrus rind, red apples, berries and blanched almonds with hints of oyster shell and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied and ample but incisive, with excellent depth at the core, a lovely spice of acidity and a long, precise finish.

It was showing especially well during my spring visit to the domaine, bursting with aromas of orange rind, crisp green apple, white flowers and almond paste, the prelude to a medium to full-bodied, layered and racy palate that's long, penetrating and saline on the finish.

Hints of white pepper, chalk and mint add expressive overtones to this super-expressive old-vine Blanc de Noirs. This edition was disgorged in January 2018.

The 2013 L’Année is 60% Pinot Noir from the lower slopes of Le Mont Benoît Villers-aux-Noeuds and 40% Chardonnay from Eceuil, pressed together. This is quite open for the vintage, most likely the result of relatively high maturity in the Chardonnay that reached 12% alcohol. Savart compensated for that to some degree by picking the Pinot less ripe, around 10.7%. Nevertheless, this is a decidedly soft, open-knit style. Dried apricot, chamomile, wild flowers, honey and tangerine peel are some of the many notes that fill out the wine’s frame. Disgorged January 2018.

The 2013 Le Mont Benoit is 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay vinified in a 600-liter oak cask. Vertical structure and a sense of gravitas are two of the signatures. Lemon peel, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many notes that fill out the wine's broad frame. There is no shortage of power, but the Annee has a bit less finesse than the very best wines in the range. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged February 2017.

This Sparkling red opens well pouring with a frothy dark red tinged mousse that shows very good hold. Deep dark red base wine colour with an exceptionally fine bead that shows good persistence. French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.

The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
