Hugues Godme Reserve Champagne Premier CruChampagne, FRANCE$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2017-2022)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkOver the course of a year we're fortunate to taste numerous Champagnes from both large houses and small grower producers, and they're often very good. And yet every so often a producer presents a collection of wines that not only get our attention, they command it, and it's hard not to get excited by them. The wines of Hugues Godmé have appeared in Australia before while under the Godme Pere et Fils label, but following recent disagreements over wine making philosophy with his sister, Hugues is going it alone and the results to date are exceptional.
Based in the grand cru village of Verzenay, Hugues Godmé now tends 40 plots of vines totalling 7.6 hectares in Verzenay and Verzy (grand cru), and Villers Marmery and Villedommange (premier cru). Wine making ticks all the boxes of the new wave of Champagne producers, being certified biodynamic (since 2014), using only native yeasts, no fining or filtration, vinification in wood and ageing on lees, parcel selections, low sulfur, and low dosage levels.
With all the extra care and attention that comes with being organic and biodynamic, the resultant wines are extremely well defined examples that express a unique sense of place. Each wine is intense in flavour, but they're best described as being tightly coiled rather than austere, and will age very well. The non-vintage wines also have a remarkable depth and complexity owing to the unusually high percentage of reserve wines in the blend, often between 40-70%, including up to six vintages in the final wine. Why buy the Non Vintage Cuvees of the big Champagne houses when you can drink this Superb Grower Champagne for the same price.

2008 Hugues Godme Les Champs Saint Martin Champagne Grand CruChampagne, FRANCE$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkChampagne Hugues Godmé are based in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay in the northern Montagne de Reims, where they farm a total of 7.6 hectares of vines spread across four villages. Their Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru village pair of Verzenay and Verzy, while much of their Chardonnay is in Villers Marmery, and the Pinot Meunier a touch west in Ville-Dommange. Hugues has long been concerned with the health of his vineyards (along with himself), and made the transition to organic farming in 2006 with certification coming in 2013, followed a year later with biodynamic certification in 2014. Each parcel is vinified separately and dependant on the terroir will have fermentation occur in neutral oak or enamel lined cement tanks, all using native yeasts. Across the range dosage is kept very low, with many wines now bottled as brut nature (zero dosage). As to be expected with wines from Verzenay and Verzy, these Champagnes are sleek and structured, tightly coiled in their youth but with fantastic concentration of fruit.
A bottling of 100% Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit Les Champs St. Martin near the base of the slope in Verzenay. The single vineyard 1.09ha parcel consists of 30 year-old vines planted on a chalky base soil. Maturation of the base wine takes place 100% in 225L oak barrels, and has no dosage added.

Hure Freres Invitation Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenCellar: 4 - 5 Years (2018-2019)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkThe exceptional quality of growers Champagne is often reason enough to celebrate by popping a cork! Hure Freres (Hure brothers) are located in Ludes, a Premier Cru village from the Montagne de Reims where Pinot is king. When Francois Hure and his brother Matthieu took over the estate in 2005, they brought with them a wealth of knowledge acquired working with the who’s who of Terroir wines in estates such as Domaine de Montille and Chapoutier but also here in Australia, where Francois spent time at Coldstream Hills under the watch of James Halliday.
The Invitation, as the name suggests, is where one should start to discover their wide range of Champagnes. The blend is composed of 50% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay sourced exclusively from family vineyards located in the Montagne de Reims , Vallee de l’Ardre and Vitry le Francois, where they have complete control over grape growing.
It is often said Champagne is made at the press and Hure Freres still use a traditional vertical basket press to obtain the best juice to turn into the base wines ready for the Champagnisation (Methode Champenoise). The Invitation will spend a minimum of 24 months and sometimes up to 36 months on lees after tirage, to gain and enhance complexity. Released as brut with a dosage at 9g/l, lower than the big negoce houses, the results of their careful approach to detail, can certainly be tasted in the Invitation, with a very well defined and precise style , balancing power and elegance with a very fine bead, which is probably the trademark of the brothers as this is a consistent trait throughout their range of strikingly good wines.
Pours well with a creamy white mousse and a pale straw base wine colour. Exceptionally fine and very persistent bead. Nosing reveals aromas of baked bread and yeast lees over some citrus and light toast. Light and lively across the palate but with plenty of richness the palate features flavours of brioche, yeast lees and citrus followed by a hint of grapefruit and subtle cashew. Clean crisp dry finish. Excellent length with a long yeast lees, brioche and citrus aftertaste.

Emmanuel Lassaigne is one of Champagne's most thoughtful and exciting grower producers, working with the chalky south and southeast-facing sloped vineyards of Montgueux in the Aube department. Lassaigne's extraordinary Champagnes are pushing the qualitative boundaries not just of the Aube but of the entire region. Farming in his vineyards is organic with cultivated soils and harvesting at full maturity. In the cellar, the wines ferment in wood and stainless steel, and they're disgorged by hand without dosage. The style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric.
Lassaigne's vintage Blanc de Blancs is perhaps the sweet spot in the range. As a cuvee of 100% Chardonnay from the Le Cotet (35%) and Les Paluets (65%) vineyards, the wine was raised in tank before 8 years in bottle and disgorgement in late 2021. Given the extended lees contact this wine shows an enormous level of depth and complexity.

This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. There is immense ageing potential here and you’ll be rewarded for keeping it. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Clos Saint-Sophie was owned by Marcel Dupont, a friend of the French botanist Charles Baltet, author of an important 19th-century treatise on grafting, and Baltet used the Clos for experiments. Rather than having any kind of ecclesiastical origin, the vineyard in fact takes its name from Dupont's wife. Thus, the first plantings in history of vitas vinifera in Japan—on Mount Fuji—are inextricably linked with this small corner of the Aube. Today, the Clos is owned by the Valton family—better known as the proprietor of children’s' clothing brand Petit Batteau—and Lassaigne makes the wine. Notes of citrus oil and crisp yellow orchard fruit mingle with nuances of saffron, anise, dried white flowers and warm bread in a complex bouquet, introducing Lassaigne's 2012 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Clos Sainte-Sophie, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's deep and muscular, with racy acids and a finish that's simultaneously intensely saline and searingly chalky. The new disgorgement of Lassaigne's emblematic NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is a blend of the 2020, 2019 and 2018 vintages, from vines that range between 45 and 70 years old growing on the slopes of Montgueux. The 2007 Dizy-Corne Bautray is soft, silky and quite open. Lemon peel, mint, white flowers and white pepper are some of the notes that give the 2007 its distinctive brightness and energy. Equally polished on the palate, the 2007 is exceptionally silky and finessed in its tactile impression. A wine of classiness and total understatement, the 2007 should drink well for at least another 5-10 years, perhaps more. There is good brightness in the glass, but the wine’s structure is very much medium in body. One of the things that stands out most is the silkiness and nearly imperceptible feel of the bubbles, especially as the wine opens up in the glass. Disgorged January, 2016. No Dosage. Disgorged in April 2018 with 2.5 grams per liter dosage, Jacquesson's 2008 Extra Brut Grand Cru Avize - Champ Caïn is showing brilliantly, soaring from the glass with a lively bouquet of waxy lemon rind, green apple, walnuts, marzipan and subtle hints of drawn butter and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, mid-palate volume and structural tension, with a deeper, broader profile than the 2008 Core Bautray tasted alongside. The finish is long, saline and chalky. While Hervé Chiquet observes that Jacquesson has made considerable progress—especially in the vineyards—in the last decade that the 2008 necessarily doesn't reflect, this is nonetheless a brilliant Champagne. Drink 2020 - 2040.

The 2008 Extra Brut Premier Cru Dizy - Corne Bautray is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with a youthful bouquet of citrus oil, clear honey, preserved rhubarb and subtle hints of fresh pastry. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with an incisive spine of acidity, considerable concentration and a long, reverberating finish. This is an unusually tensile, racy rendition of this cuvée, and Jean-Hervé Chiquet observes that, in the 2008 vintage, this typically rich wine has embraced its Chardonnay origins more wholeheartedly than usual. It's a terrific wine that will delight Champagne purists. All 5,488 bottles and 304 magnums were disgorged without dosage in April 2018. As readers may know, the Corne Bautray is a southwest-facing parcel planted in 1960 that's characterized by gravel and marl soils over a base of Campanian chalk. Drink 2020 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)The 2008 Extra-Brut Corne Bautray, 100% Chardonnay, is a wine of real class and sophistication. Lemon confit, white pepper, chalk and floral notes all open up in the glass, but more than anything else, the Corne Bautray is a wine of total harmony. The finesse of the mousse alone is truly remarkable. Beautifully textured and vinous, with terrific freshness, the 2008 is a regal, impeccably balanced Champagne with tons of pure personality. No dosage. Disgorged: April, 2018. Drink 2019 - 2029.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis is a phenomenal Champagne of such purity. It delivers immense power with such refinement. There’s a very precise feel with a super fine, sliced-brioche nose and white-peach, fine-lemon and chalky-mineral notes. So fresh. There’s such intensity, focus and delicacy to the palate. So focused and so detailed with seamless, fluid, ripe-chardonnay flavor and layers of savory baked biscuits, building on the finish. Wonderfully complete structure and texture. The power here is considerable and the acidity drive is simply wild. Wow! Drink or hold.

Intense baked bread, oily toast like scents and yeast lees aromatics flow out of the glass complexed by roasted almonds, brioche and hints of ginger. A rich full palate is backed by nervy, crisp acidity that gives the wine an energetic feel. The NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 742 (2014 base) has really opened up since I last tasted it about a year ago. The Pinot is so expressive in the No. 742, a Champagne built on texture and resonance. Dried pear, dried flowers, plum and spice fill out the wine's frame effortlessly, but the 742 truly shines with a bit of air, which seems to accent its freshness. Readers looking for a fine grower Champagne to drink now will find much to like. The blend is 59% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers) and 41% Chardonnay (from Avize and Oiry). Disgorged January 2019. Dosage is 1.5 grams per liter. Drink 2020-2030.

Very fine perfume incorporating warm bread aromas, citrus pith and mixed candied citrus peel, dried apple, wet slate-mineral-like wafts. It’s got velocity in the palate, chalky, edgy, crystalline, more ‘mineral-like’ flavour and feel, set within the frisky tang of fruit and whoosh of firm bubbles. Really easy to drink, has a succulence in all the mix of things. Great.

From the 2012 harvest and five locations in Champagne. The farming is now biological/organic, the winemaking decidedly low intervention. Indeed, the wines sit on lees in barrel for their life outside bottle, unfined and unfiltered. Sulphur addition would be on the very lower side for Champagne at 20ppm added and less than 40ppm total. Effectively, as natural-leaning as Champagne gets these days. All the info is on the label too. This is a super-dooper release too.
It’s a marriage of toasty-richness and bristling freshness here. Compact in the palate with undertones of brioche, marzipan, ginger biscuit, with a coursing vein of green apply, tangy fruit character and lively oyster-shell-like minerality. The bouquet is attractive, a mesh of patisserie, honey and apple/citrus character. It pulses through the mouth with refreshment factor and light, palate sticking fruit-yeast sweetness. It’s gulpable and yet fine. It’s stunning stuff. Drink 2017-2023.

This is the third release of Prévost’s négociant-manipulant cuvée, which was born during the frost-ravaged 2017 season. Where the first two releases were 100% Pinot Meunier sourced from Prévost’s neighbours in Gueux, 2021 was sourced from a number of vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, including a good share from the Cramant Grand Cru. Readers will be aware that when Prévost does work with purchased fruit, he only works with growers that emphasise cultivated soils, low yields and full ripeness. He always works in close collaboration with them, i.e. both harvest date and sorting of the grapes are in Jérôme’s hands.
The winemaking for this label remains exactly the same as the estate label, using indigenous yeasts and fermenting and raising in a mix of used barrels of all sizes from 225 to 600 litres. He neither racks, filters nor stabilises the wine. He uses 23 g/L for the secondary fermentation, then gives the wine up to 18 months of bottle age before disgorging by hand, with around 2 g/L. Please note that Jérôme told us that in 2022, this label will return to its original sourcing. So there you have it, another Prévost collector’s item!

Denser and more compact than its 2019 counterpart, the NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 20 reveals inviting aromas of pear, confit citrus, mirabelle plum and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's vinous and sapid, built around chalky structure and concluding with a penetrating finish. While it can be approached now, a few years' patience will pay dividends. Drink 2023-2040.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)The NV Extra Brut Les Beguines is spicy, savory and full of Meunier character. All it needs is time to soften and fully come together, as it has just been disgorged. Today, it is the raw energy that impresses most. Dried pear, ginger, spice, dried herbs, anise and chamomile open gradually. Time in the glass fills out the mid-palate and finish nicely, giving a good idea of what is to come. This looks to be a medium-bodied, distinctly savory, vintage for Les Beguines. This release is based on 2020, with 20% reserve wines from 2019. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. The NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 18 is a wine of immense charm and generosity of spirit. Mingling aromas of walnuts, fenugreek, pear, yellow orchard fruit, licorice, white flowers and buttery pastry with evocations of peach and apricot, it's full-bodied, fleshy and voluptuous, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, enveloping core, concluding with a sapid finish. "These were the nicest grapes I've ever seen when assessed simply as fruit," Prévost remarks, contrasting the 2018 crop with the smaller berries and thicker skins of, for instance, 2015 "which were great grapes from which to make wine."

Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines (LC16) ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$185. 00Bottle$2220.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkPrévost’s 2.2 hectare vineyard, Les Béguines, is in Gueux, 10km west of Reims in the north of the region. Inherited from Jérôme’s grandmother, the site was planted in the 1960s with an old, slow growing, rootstock that descends deeply. Les Béguines is close to 100% Pinot Meunier, although there is a small amount of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc, that was planted about a decade ago. The soil of Les Béguines is a layer cake of calcareous sand (Thanetian sand), and clay. The vineyard management is of course organic, with the soils cultivated and yields kept at balanced levels. Nothing is forced. The fruit is picked ripe and the wine is vinified without any additions in large format, used barrels for ten months. Bottled unfiltered, Prévost disgorges the wine after roughly 17 months on lees and adds approximately 2g/L dosage, (so extra brut). These are wines that always show better after time in bottle, five + years is ideal, but even a year or two makes a great difference. Frustrating but true. That’s not to say these wines won’t give pleasure when young and the striking 2016 is a case in point!
- Notes sourced from the importerOther Reviews....
The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Les Beguines is endowed with all the tension, energy and resonance readers have come to expect from these highly singular Champagnes. Lemon confit, mint, white flowers and crushed rocks all race out of the glass in an explosive, beautifully expressive Champagne that dazzles from the very first taste. In fact, 2016 is a rare vintage where I prefer the Blanc to the Rosé. In 2016, Jérôme Prévost blended in 10-15% reserve wines from 2015 along with drops of still red Meunier. More importantly, the 2016 is a Champagne readers will not want to miss, as it is absolutely compelling.

Inherited from Jérôme’s grandmother, the site was planted in the 1960s with an old, slow-growing, rootstock that descends deeply. Les Béguines is close to 100% Pinot Meunier, although there is now a small amount of 10-year-old Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc that has been planted next to the Pinot Meunier parcel. As these vines are still young, they are currently blended into the Les Béguines cuvée, representing roughly 6% of the blend. With time they may produce a stand-alone wine. The soil of Les Béguines is a layer cake of calcareous (Thanetian) sand over clay over calcareous sand. The vineyard management is of course organic, with the soils cultivated and yields kept at balanced levels.
To recover some of the volumes lost to the frost of 2017 (some 80%!) Prévost sourced fruit from a neighbour’s vineyard in Les Béguines. This makes 2017 the first vintage of this wine to be bottled under the Domaine’s new Négociant Manipulant (NM) status.
As always the wine was vinified without any additions in large-format, used barrels for ten months and bottled unfiltered. Prévost disgorged the wine after 17 months on lees and added approximately 2g/L dosage, so the wine is Extra Brut.

Prévost's NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 17 is showing even better than it did a year ago, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of honeycomb, walnuts, confit lemon, spices and warm bread. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's racy and incisive, with a deep and sapid core, bright acids and chalky structuring extract. While it is drinking very well young, it will evidently only go from strength to strength over the next decade.

Krug Grande Cuvee 171eme Edition ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $525.00$425. 00Bottle$5100.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSince their inception in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has been their signature wine, and the most important wine they produce each year. Crafting Grande Cuvée only once a year, Krug now distinguish each release numerically, and provide great insight into the detailed composition via their Krug iD site. While these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend, normally over 120 base wines spanning 10+ vintages. The 171eme Edition is a staggering blend of 131 wines from 12 vintages back to 2000, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2015 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 58% of the blend, while 42% of reserve wines are used from 11 older vintages stretching back to 2000.

Alison Napjus - Wine SpectatorAn intense clarity of fresh red berries from the start, which builds anticipation on the magnificent and magnifying nose. On the palate there’s counter-balancing mature buttery fruit crumble and a savoury note here, delicious and grown-up – the result of a high contribution of 50% reserve wines in the blend perhaps? There’s a smidgen of grippy texture at the end like drinking a light red wine and it does not detract. Less strikingly obvious and glamorous than the 26th edition. This will keep well and develop. 1989 Krug Collection Vintage Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$4999. 00Bottle$59988.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkVintage Krug holds a special place among the landscape of prestige cuvée Champagne, over the years having produced some of the most mesmerising and memorable wines of the region. Appearing only when conditions allow, and never at the sacrifice of their number one wine Grande Cuvée, Vintage Krug is cherished and chased by collectors the world over. Knowing that Champagne displays a range of experiences as bottles evolve over time, Krug also holds back a small amount of these vintage wines to be released as they reach a new peak of expression, naming them Krug Collection. These impossibly rare releases of Krug Collection are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars, and after regular tasting and appraisal are finally disgorged to reveal their new personality.
Krug Collection 1989 is part of Krug’s trilogy of three exceptional years (1988, 1989, 1990) with completely different conditions that resulted in Champagnes that are unique. Comprised of 47% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Meunier, Krug Collection 1989 was kept on lees for 25 years before finally receiving its cork in spring 2014. This 1989 magnum was then allowed to rest further before release.

Krug’s 1989 Brut Krug Collection represents their most recent in a long-running series of late-releases that feature a vintage they have decided is especially expressive after entering what they refer to as its “second life.” In theory, if you have ideal cellar conditions and bought Krug’s initial disgorgement of the 1989 vintage when it came on the market around a decade ago, then you have essentially the same wine today, though I have never been lucky enough to make the relevant direct comparison. Given the relative infrequency with which a vintage is “declared” by Krug, their “Collection” bottlings represent the remnants of an already elite band. But this 1989 represents the first re-release from the only series of three consecutive vintage bottlings – 1988-1990 – in Krug’s history. The mingling of saline, nutty, and caramelized notes in the nose – adumbrating this wine’s entire performance – is gorgeous. Butter-toasted hazelnuts, dried wild mushrooms, kelp, and cocoa mingle in a silken, mouthwateringly saline and savory matrix reminiscent of oyster liquor laced with fresh lemon juice (because, there is still a youthfully citric store of energy here). This finishes with correspondingly pronounced umami and with tangy vibrancy of citrus and salt. After a day open, the nutty elements become more piquant and walnut-like, but the smoky hints of oxidation remain balanced by citric and mineral elements and positively integrated into a mysteriously diverse show. The palate becomes plusher (perhaps in part due to diminishing mousse) and creamy in an almost whipped-cream fashion, yet the long finish continues to offer uncanny refreshment. Certainly this can be safely held for at least a few more years and perhaps in an ideal cellar will “plateau” (or continue to).

David Schildknecht - Wine Advocate (Nov 2013)It’s Friday, and that can only mean one thing. Champagne. This bottle of the 1989 Krug Collection is one of the very best I have had. The 1989 Collection is variable in quality, and quite a few examples have been on the mature side. Not this bottle. Its flavors are bright, focused and fresh for a Champagne of this age, with the classic super-fine Krug texture that invites a second glass and then a third as we look over the menu.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (April 2015)Shows a lovely interplay between the creamy bead and rich notes of almond financier, apricot preserves, treacle and cardamom, with finely cut, persistent acidity and flavors of pastis, raspberry puree, fennel seed and fleur de sel. Offers a refined, lasting finish, with a push of saline-tinged minerality. Drink now through 2029.

1998 Krug Vintage ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 12%Other reviews….
Krug's 1998 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the classic Krug style is rich, alive and totally vivid. Honey, almonds, smoke, graphite and dried apricots are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this rich, enveloping Champagne. A wine of texture and depth, the 1998 impresses for its vinous personality and terrific balance. Lively veins of underlying acidity suggest the 1998 will drink well for many years to follow. This is one of the best bottles of the 1998 I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2038.

The 1995 Krug is gorgeous. I chose it because one of my guests loves Krug and I thought the 1995 would have the right amount of complexity to pair beautifully with the smokiness in Saison’s caviar. Although the 1995 Krug is not a truly epic wine, it is in a sweet spot right now. Drink 2018-2023.

Antonio Galloni – VinousA very youthful '95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. It's all underscored by a precise structure and creamy texture. Its structure keeps it persistent through the long finish. A picture of precision and intensity. Drink now through 2025.

Bruce Sanderson – Wine Spectator(from magnum) The grand finale to Olivier Krug’s awe-inspiring masterclass was the fabulous 1995 vintage, poured from magnum. It is one of four Krug vintages from the 1990s and it was one of the last wines which Olivier tasted with his father and grandfather. Today it is still going strong, with a primary and savoury nose of apricot and toast. On the palate this remains vigorous but mature, with oxidative notes of walnut oil, nougat and umami, as well as gingerbread, cappuccino, toast and candied fruits. There's lots of finesse and freshness and great length – a joy to drink now and for another 15 years at least. Drink 2017 - 2034.

Krug Grande Cuvee 170eme Edition ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$385. 00Bottle$4620.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSince their inception in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has been their signature wine, and the most important wine they produce each year. The 170eme Edition is a staggering blend of 195 wines from 12 vintages back to 1998, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2014 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 55% of the blend, while 45% of reserve wines are used from 11 older vintages stretching back to 1998.
Graceful and satiny the mousse slowly recedes into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. An exceptional fine bead flowing through to the top of the glass with ample persistence. Sophisticated aromatics of citrus, roasted almonds and yeast lees meld into some oily toast like notes and cashew. Vivid and sculptured yet airy and also relatively open, well meshed flavours of citrus, oily toast characters, yeast lees, almond and subtle ginger evolve across the palate into a dry tense finish. There’s a subtle creaminess to the mouthfeel. Mouth watering acidity with a racy, tightly wound aftertaste.

Wonderful precision and depth right away on the nose, with dried pineapple, light apricot and hints of flint and slate. Medium-bodied palate that’s firm, bright and linear. Vivid, driven acidity adds focus and perfection. Dried lemon and a wonderful, creamy texture with a mineral undertone. Extremely long, almost endless. Sophistication here. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.com (July 2022)Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition is based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by some 45% reserve wines dating back to 1998, with the house drawing on, among many others, 2013 for structure and 2012 and 2003 for generosity. Opening in the glass with aromas of pastry cream, dried fruits, pear, warm spices, freshly baked bread and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fine-boned, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a precise, chiseled profile. But if the latter adjective could be applied to the 2013-base 169ème édition equally felicitously, the 2014-base 170ème is more giving and less tightly wound out of the gates and will offer more demonstrative drinking young. Drink 2021 - 2041.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (July 2022)A lovely ferny nose and breezy seaside raciness. Bright yellow fruit on entry, a flicker of preserved lemon and cooked quince adding vibrancy. Then comes the Krug richness which spreads over the palate. The balance hovers tantalisingly between tactile precision and soft warm fruit and the finish reveals layers of cinnamon-tinctured blancmange, and the creaminess goes on. Rich but light on its feet. A definite buy and a keeper. The 2014 base harvest was hit by sour rot and mildew in mid-summer. Intense selection meant Krug had to reduce the amount of Meunier to half its Grande Cuvée average, and reserve wines (representing 45% of the final wine) back to 1998 buttress the balance and complexity; a triumph of blending. It also relies heavily on 2013 to add life and structure. Main harvest: 2014. 45% reserves. Aged for six years on lees. Disgorged: Spring 2021. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Tim Hall - Decanter (April 2022)Lots of acidity! Extremely lively and brisk. But it’s actually readier than most young Grandes Cuvées I have tasted at this relatively early stage with sumptuous texture actually. Very clean and fresh. Bone dry but broachable and quite charming within the Krug ethos. Really quite friendly. One of my favourites of this line-up! Drink 2022 – 2036.

Jancis Robinson MW (April 2022)From vintages spanning from 1998 to 2014, the NV Champagne Grande Cuvee 170eme Edition is decadent and nuanced, with a rounded perfume of toasted brioche, lemon curd, and honeydew melon. Ripe yellow orchard fruits fill the palate with nectarine, fresh grapefruit pith, and a core of acidity. This is showing wonderfully now, although it still has the tension to go for the next 20 years. Drink 2022-2042.

French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.
The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
