Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Somber and inexpressive aromas of various dark berries, earth, the sauvage and pretty floral wisps introduce the acceptably dense but attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess unusually good refinement for a young Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that flashes impressive depth and persistence. While this quality effort will need 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee, it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed at around 7 to 8 years of age. Drink from 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundRich deep crimson to purple colour, again with a quieter nose, but it is balanced and not over ripe. Indeed, there is a crispness to the raspberry fruit at the front end, opening out to a fleshier finish as the oak adds its two bits worth. Well organised wine which will need time to develop personality.

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced and in need of aeration. There is good verve and detail to the lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors that possess good flavor authority while delivering reasonably good length on the moderately rustic finale. Note that my rating assumes that the nose will gradually clean up with aging. Drink from 2026+.

An intricately layered nose combines notes of red and dark cherry and plum with those of earth and underbrush. The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundTwo plots, both at the top. That which came from the Confuron family is trained in gobelet fashion to reduce vigour, while the Noëllat plot has a much better selection of pinot plant material and old vines. Glowing red purple. Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

A highly spiced nose features notes of cassis, plum, hoisin and a hint of sandalwood. The ripe, mouth coating and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent length on the well-balanced if youthfully austere finish that also really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is definitely a "buy and forget you own it" wine as I would advise not touching a bottle for at least 10 years and 15 to 20 would likely be better. Drink from 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe vines date back to 1926. Rich dense black purple, the nose immediately gives a sense of weight and of distinction. Quite muscular but in addition to, rather than at the expense of, finesse. There is a fine succulent fruit and a sense of harmony. I can see the wood a touch though at the back, though Louis says this is a recent and passing phenomenon.

2019 Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley VolnayBurgundy, FRANCE$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkThomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. Drink 2025 - 2045.

A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. Reduction dominates the fruit today. There is a bit more volume and richness with more evident minerality to the medium weight, fleshy and caressing flavors that culminate in a highly refreshing and balanced finish. This is a really lovely combination of power and refinement that should age beautifully. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThere are three barrels of the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a pretty wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, dried flowers and rock salt, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and pure, with tangy acids, chalky tannins and good length on the finish. It's an ethereal, delicate Caillerets this year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2019)The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a terse, mineral-scented bouquet that is easily the most complex of the four Volnays from Boillot. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp black fruit laced with orange peel, bay leaf and clove. I like the focus and density here. A very fine, complex Volnay that should age with style. Drink 2020 - 2038.

Neal Martin - VinousHigh up, on the rock with almost no topsoil, so this vineyard was picked very early along with Les Angles. Fine dense purple and a certain sense of nobility. Gorgeous weight of fruit here, just on the red side of black, mouth-filling especially at the back, good thread of acidity woven in, fine long finish. I get no feeling that this been picked too early.

Reduction dominates the fruit day. By contrast the rich and naturally sweet medium weight flavors possess good if not distinguished density as well as fine length on the mildly rustic and austere finish. This refreshing effort is also quite firmly structured and will need at least a few years of cellaring. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe insider's choice chez Boillot is the 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Croix Noires, a delightful wine that reveals aromas of cherries, grilled meats, licorice and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with good depth and dimension, juicy acids and a pleasing sense of completeness.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2019)The 2017 Pommard Les Croix Noires 1er Cru has a pretty, quite mineral-driven bouquet with hints of wild heather and pressed flowers tincturing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, perhaps just missing a little complexity toward the second half, although there is good length. I just want more terroir to come through once in bottle. Drink 2020 - 2030.

Neal Martin - VinousPure vibrant red purple. The nose is refined rather than restrained, and a gorgeous fresh yet ripe red fruit suffuses the palate. A natural elegance to this wine, building towards the more typical Pommard structure at the back – but the fruit transcends. It’s the backbone which does it. Only three barrels unfortunately.

This is notably fresh and expressive for a young Clos de Vougeot with intensely earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas complementing extremely rich and full-bodied flavors that are quite ripe in the context of the 2007 vintage and very serious while offering good depth and length on the moderately austere and dusty finish. This is really quite good with ample character that should also reward 10 to 15 years of cellar time. Drink 2019+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (2010)
Medium red. Reticent aromas of medicinal black cherry, redcurrant, menthol and nutty oak. Distinctly clenched today and dominated by its structure. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and little in the way of easy sweetness. With 48 hours in the recorked bottle, a strong note of licorice emerged. This will require at least five or six years of cellaring.

Very generous wood and menthol nuances still allow the liqueur-like aromas of red currant, violet and range of spice elements to be appreciated. There is first-rate power and punch to the moderately dense and beautifully textured flavors that display superb length on the sappy finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. Drink from 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundA wine with huge potential is the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot). Unwinding in the glass with notes of raspberries, red cherries, vanilla pod, exotic spices and raw cocoa, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an immensely concentrated core, powdery tannins and a tightly wound profile. This will be among the slowest to evolve of all the wines in the cellar, and also among the most long-lived.
94-96+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. This is very impressive and bloomin’ delicious (already!) Drink 2026-2065.
96-98 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe wine is massive, with grippy tannins, full body and an interminable finish. 'A great vintage to taste in 20 years,' according to winemaker Frédéric Barnier. The 0.27ha Jadot parcel (owned by the house itself) is in a strip that goes from the top of the vineyard to the bottom, and thus includes both terres blanches (white marl) and terres rouges (red clay). The fruit character is black plum and cassis, with a firm, mineral and earthy element. Drink 2025 - 2040.

If every Chambertin was like this, we could give up our job. So much spice, earthy and meaty character, but in the end it's the amarena-cherry fruit that wins out. Enormous concentration and finesse. Staggering purity of flavor. Then comes the spectacularly uplifting finish that just doesn't want to stop. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThis is also firmly reduced so if you're for some reason tempted to open a bottle, be sure to give it a thorough aeration. There is again excellent volume to the mouth coating and powerful larger-scaled flavors that exude both hints of minerality and bitter pit fruit on the lingering, focused and balanced finale. This firmly structured effort will need to add depth over time, but the underlying material appears up to the task. Drink from 2032+.

The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.
The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. ‘La Justice’ cuvée – named after its climat that Alexandrine bought in 2010 – produced its first vintage as recently as 2011. La Justice is located in the northeast part of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard.

An interesting and equally fresh and ripe nose combines notes of black fruit coulis, kirsch, violet and a floral whiff. The delicious, vibrant and more refined medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the slightly more complex and sneaky long finale. This too offers very fine quality for its level. Drink from 2026+.

The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. The cuvée “Alexandrine” was created in 2005 to showcase Alexandrine’s talent. She selects the grapes over six of her favourite plots of vineyards. She is only taking the grapes that are “millerandées” meaning the grapes that are naturally smaller and concentrated. It requires a doubly long selection process and twice as many locations to create this cuvée with Grand Cru complexity, sans the Grand Cru price tag.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine derives, as usual, from vines within Roy's six favorite parcels that produce tiny, shot berries. Unwinding to reveal aromas of sweet berries, orange rind, peonies and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and perfumed, with ultra-fine tannins, lively acids and a deep, seamless profile. While it's approachable young in this charming vintage, it has more than enough substance to age. Drink 2021 - 2039.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is expressive and overtly floral on the nose…just how you want a Vosne to be. It discretely gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with quite structured red fruit, symmetrical, nothing powerful yet almost "athletic" on the finish. I suspect this will gain weight throughout its second winter. Drink 2025-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousOne of the fuller red purple colours. A most engaging expansive deep cherry fruit. This is close to its magical best, with a volume of fruit which for me sits just right. Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis is ripe and smoky up front, with a black cherry and mulberry fruit aromas and mineral and earth notes. The texture of the wine is dense and firm but enlivened by the fresh acidity of the 2021 vintage that carries it to a marvelous, lingering finish. The grapes come from Méo’s 0.72-hectare parcel planted in the 1930s. The grapes are destemmed and fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (half new). A joy to taste now, as it is perfectly balanced and refined, but it will become more complex in the next five years. Better after 2027.

2022 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1250. 00Bottle$15000.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkDomaine Mongeard-Mugneret farms an impressive 75 acres of vineyards across much of the Cote d'Or in Burgundy, covering 35 separate appellations. While this leads to many different styles of wines to be produced, their house style leans towards rich and supple wines, with impressive concentration that show well in their youth yet age with ease. Other than a portion of their Richebourg, all grapes are fully destemmed before a cool soak of 4-5 days prior to alcoholic fermentation. As a guide no more than 50% new oak is used in their premier cru wines, while up to 70% is used in their top grand cru plots. The wines are bottled after 18-22 months with no filtration.

Incredible depth for a pinot that’s so expressive yet delicate. There is mineral depth to the aromas of red berries, dark fruit, bergamot, dried roses, stones, wet forest floor and sweet spices. The tension on the palate creates fullness, but without any heaviness in the middle. Rather ethereal, well structured and super long, lasting over a minute. One for the cellar. Already great now, but this will be stunning in three to five years.

2023 Domaine Pernot Pere et Fils Bourgogne Cote d'Or Pinot NoirBurgundy, FRANCE$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkDomaine Pernot Pere et Fils is rising producer in the Côte de Nuits, historically rooted in the village of Brochon, just north of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate, formally established in 1900, is now led by the ambitious fourth-generation winemaker, Pascal Pernot. Since taking over in 2018, Pascal has quickly elevated the domaine's reputation by championing a philosophy of vineyard purity, working hard to progress the vineyards to a sustainable viticulture while slowly implementing aspects of biodynamics. A key point of difference is his commitment to early picking to ensure the wines retain freshness and natural acidity, providing structural elegance and longevity. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the elevage is handled judiciously with a mix of traditional barrels and larger demi-muids.

The fruit in Les Prielles, on the stones, suffered a bit so Pascal started picking there. A delicious bouquet with ripe but not excessive raspberry fruit. Attractive crunchy fruit with some depth and length. Half has been aged in barrel and half in tank. Drink from 2026-2028.

From the northern end of the appellation, Champerrier, En Derée, En Croisotte. Intense purple in colour, all destemmed. 20% new wood. The aromatics are on the cusp of strawberry and raspberry. A bit more extraction but this has worked really well. In the mouth, the raspberry side dominates while the acidity and tannins provide structure. Drink from 2027-2032.

Pascal pulled out half after 2023 so as to be able to replant in a better organised fashion. All destemmed, and aged in wood from the forest of Jupille. Deep dark purple. The nose has a little stewed plum, Rich sultry fruit, very dark raspberry, but opens out a little more at the back. Quite a powerful expression. Black cherries to finish, though not overdone. In the end, the juicier of the two single vineyard wines. Drink from 2028-2033.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy - 2020 Domaine Pierre Boisson Monthelie RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
Fruit for this Monthelie Rouge has an average vine age of 40 years sourced from three different parcels, Les Plantes, Les Longenes, and Les Sous Court. Vinification includes a 5 hours cold maceration before fermentaiton in stainless steel, before being pressed to barrel for 18 months in oak, 20% of which are new.

Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.
An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
