While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

There seems to be a gentle touch this vintage, with wonderful fruit expression. A pinot with all the fine aromas and flavours the variety can muster, yet it’s restrained with mouth-watering raspberry-like acidity and silky tannins. There’s a savoury edge to this, lighter framed yet highly enjoyable. Drink by 2029.

Estate-grown MV6 planted '97, eight picking days 4-25 Mar, the majority destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 15% fermented with 30% whole bunches to allow some carbonic maceration, matured in new and used French oak, bottled unfiltered. This complex vinification has resulted in a very complex pinot, with red and purple fruits, abundant spices and savoury/earthy fine-grained tannins. This in turn leads to good length and texture. Drink by 2023.

A combination of finesse and richness, the elegantly built palate is decorated with densely structured red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits which are underpinned by rugged yet finely balanced tannins and energetic acidity. In the last 10 years Virgile Lignier has modified his wine-making using whole-bunch vinification ranging from 30-100% depending on the vintage and the vineyard, and he has also reduced the percentage of new oak for maturation with most wines seeing around 30% making its effect seamless in the final wines. Once again there is a vaguely liqueur-like character to the aromas of dark currant, spice and abundant floral elements, especially violet and lilac. Lignier's Bourgogne Rouge is drawn from vines situated mainly in the lieu-dits of Au Pelson and Bons Batons, close to Morey Saint Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, giving the wine a strong Cote de Nuits imprint. It provides a clear introduction to the domaine's approach, with careful whole-bunch use and moderate new oak.

Drawn from a 0.33 ha parcel planted in 1991 just beyond the Morey‐Saint-Denis appellation, Cuvee 823 is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown on clay-limestone soils. Vinified with ambient yeasts, de-stemmed, the wine sees about 13 months in oak (5-10% new), followed by a brief period in stainless steel. The designation "823" follows the pattern of "Tank No. 8" + the vintage year (e.g. "822" = 2022, "823" = 2023).

A cooler and more elegant nose combines notes of kirsch, dark currant, spice and a plethora of floral nuances. There is terrific intensity to the tautly muscular middle weight flavors that display evident power on the mineral-driven, super-sleek and impressively well-balanced, indeed harmonious finale. As is usually the case with this wine, it's sufficiently compact when young to need at least some patience but it will need 12 to 15 years to reach its peak. Drink from 2032+.

An ultra-spicy and markedly floral nose combines notes of red cherry, wild currant and earth with those of exotic tea and leather nuances. The polished but concentrated and intense middle weight flavors display a lovely sense of verve that carries over to the mineral-driven and well-balanced finale. This almost creamy and mildly warm effort is perhaps not quite as fresh as the Clos de la Roche, but I suspect that the nose will recover once it receives a thorough aeration and my projected range accords the benefit of the doubt that it will. 2019 Lignier-Michelot Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles VignesBurgundy, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 13.2%Closure: CorkThe Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own 10.5 hectares of some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, along with plots in the two neighbouring villages of Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. They are wines which are often very seductive at a young age which also clearly have the potential for ageing superbly. This very young domaine is now regarded among the very best in the Cotes de Nuits.
Lignier's Chambolle-Musigny hails from two parcels in Les Drazey and Les Gamaires below Bonnes Mares that were planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s and total 1.48 hectares.
Other Reviews....
A much less expressive nose reluctantly offers up pretty floral and ripe aromas of plum liqueur and various dark berries. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a caressing, indeed almost creamy mid-palate, that is highly seductive, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and refreshing finale. This is lovely and worth considering. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes contains 80% whole bunches this year. It shows a little sur-maturité on the nose with touches of tinned prune and California raisin tincturing the black fruit. The palate is more balanced with a sweet core of candied black cherry fruit intermixed with cracked black pepper and clove. That nose just needs to forage a little more restraint by the time it is bottled and then it will merit a higher score. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Neal Martin - Vinous70% whole bunch. The grapes come from Les Drazey and Gamaires. Complete ripe purple. The nose is not giving much, dense tight dark fruit with good acidity. The tannins are present but in balance with the fruit, dark red fruit, decent length.

Virgile makes his Gevrey villages cuvee mostly from a parcel of .53 ha of vines planted in 1969 in Les Seuvrees which borders on to Grand cru Charmes Chambertin close to the Morey St Denis border.
Other Reviews....
Mild reduction reduces the expressiveness and blurs the distinction of what are clearly ripe fruit aromas. The delicious and attractively vibrant flavors are not as dense as those of the old vines Morey though they do offer sneaky good length on the youthfully austere and moderately rustic finale. This is good but not as good as the best of these villages. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Bertin" contains around 80% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet with powerful black cherry and cassis fruit. It manages to retain fine delineation but leans more towards the hedonistic side of the pleasure spectrum. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit laced with marmalade and allspice on the entry. Fine grip, quite irony towards the finish with a gamey aftertaste, this will deserve a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Neal Martin - VinousFrom Seuvreys, Creux Billard, Es Murots, vinified with 100% whole bunches. There is a huge density of fruit on the nose after a very dark colour. Sweetly ripe, perhaps a little exaggerated here, very dark fruit, just short of raisiny. Length and abundant flavour. Saved by the whole bunch.

2018 Lignier-Michelot Clos Saint Denis Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$699. 00Bottle$8388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 100% whole bunch and no new barrels this year. It has a very intense bouquet of strong undergrowth and bay leaf/rose petal aromas, very well defined and showing more complexity than the Clos de la Roche. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, layers of black-tea-infused black fruit and a slightly grainy-textured finish that is extremely well balanced. This is a class act.

Neal Martin - VinousHere too the expressive and more elegant nose is markedly ripe but it's also much fresher with its perfumed combination of very spicy red and dark currant aromas. The exceptionally rich, even opulent, larger-scaled and seductive flavors brim with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm but not really austere finale. This is a classic and seriously good CSD.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru, 100% whole bunch, has a floral bouquet with wilted violets and iris infusing the black cherry and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a sorbet-fresh, vivacious finish that has real charm. This is an excellent 2018 from Lignier-Michelot.

Neal Martin - VinousDiscreet wood sets off an ultra-floral suffused nose that present notes of cassis, baked plum and soft earth. There is evident minerality to the relatively refined, intense and well-detailed flavors that display excellent complexity on the lingering, youthfully austere and sauvage finish. This is really quite good though at least some patience advised.

This comes from a block of younger vines planted in 2009. "I developed the property with the owners, and in exchange for my soil work, they let me pick my block." Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E has a very concentrated nose of warm crushed blackberries and black cherries, dried rose petal, saline, smoke, sweet strawberry and raspberry preserves with notions of amaro, dusty earth and old leather. The palate is light to medium-bodied and youthfully coiled with a firm frame of lightly chalky tannins and good freshness, finishing long on a citrus peel note.

Erin Brooks - Wine Advocate (Dec 2019)One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E is an outrageously beautiful, vivid wine. Deep, unctuous and resonant in the glass, the 2017 possesses tremendous richness and intensity. Inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha infuse the 2017 with character and personality. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2017 has more than enough structure to develop in bottle for years to come.

Philip Rich – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionIt’s remarkable what can be achieved at 12.5% alcohol. This Upper Yarra Pinot Noir is certainly light, in both colour and flavour-depth, but it has such a keen insistence through the back palate and beyond, and such an array of flavours. Herbs of various description, woodsy spice notes, forest berries and the tang of cranberry and strawberry. It’s an inherently interesting wine, and highly engaging as a result. Drink 2024-2028+

Moderate wood combines with cool aromas spice, violet, lilac, red currant and just enough sauvage character to be interesting. The exceptionally rich and generously proportioned flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the solidly powerful yet suave bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This is an atypical 2021 as it is more like a 2020 on the palate though without the higher ripeness levels. Excellent development potential here. Drink through 2033+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThere are only seven barrels of the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot), an attractively sensual wine evocative of cherries, plums, orange zest, smoke and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a sweet core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish, its quality is some compensation for the lack of quantity.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows just a tiny reduction on the nose, reluctantly opening with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and Earl Grey aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's quite "racy" in the mouth and a little tarry toward the finish. Presents good depth and length, though I find myself drawn more towards the Gevrey 1er Cru. Just needs to find its "groove". Drink 2026 - 2040.

Neal Martin - VinousAlthough initially restrained on the nose, this opens nicely with time. It shows a medium-deep colour and ripe, lush cherry fruit with a floral edge on the palate. The tannins are firm but not overly so. As it is nearly every year, this is a reliable, rewarding example of this premier cru. It comes from the one hectare the domaine owns in the centre of the Clos. The grapes are destemmed and carefully fermented to achieve this subtle elegance. Drink 2025 - 2040.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru shows more reduction than the Les Baudes, and consequently, I find this warm and more difficult to read. A wonderfully pure and equally cool nose grudgingly offers up its combination of red cherry, kirsch, crushed fennel, spice and a smoky hint. There is notably better volume and mid-palate density to the larger-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the tautly muscular, youthfully austere and more complex finale. As is usually the case, this is a combination of refinement and focused power that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years. Drink through 2033+.

Once again a moderate but not generous wood treatment stops short of overshadowing the slightly more elegant nose of black raspberry coulis, spice and warm earth scents. By contrast, the mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is notably finer compared to the Clos du Roi or Grèves while retaining excellent punch, detail and persistence on the balanced finale. Despite the greater refinement, this too is clearly built-to-age and extended patience will be required even though this might well be approachable after 8 to 10 years has passed. Drink from 2035+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru is often one of Jadot’s strongest cards amongst the Côte de Beaune reds and this is no different. It has a captivating bouquet with earthy red fruit, graphite, just a faint hint of menthol that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with a dash of white pepper towards the sustained finish. It will require several years in bottle to show its best, but it will be worth waiting for. Drink 2027-2050.

2019 Domaine des Heritiers (Louis Jadot) Corton Pougets Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
This is actually quite aromatically similar to the Corton-Grèves though with a bit more elegance. The elegance continues onto the sleekly muscular middle weight flavors that also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere finale that offers both very fine depth and length. This also possess excellent development potential and is a wine that's going to need at least a decade first. Drink 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) is excellent, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, dark chocolate, sweet spices and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with broad shoulders and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, this is a fine proposition for the medium- to long-haul.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru was ever so slightly reduced on the nose, but opens with time to reveal quite intense black fruit laced with vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very good weight and a fine bead of acidity. This conveys the most energy of the three Corton Grand Crus from Jadot that I tasted. Velvety texture on the finish. Lovely. Just one used barrel produced. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Neal Martin - VinousAttractive mid crimson. A fuller plumper bouquet than the Grèves, as the fruit appears riper. Still shows up with some tannins at the back. At the moment the fruit is showing a little bit too much ripeness for classical tastes, but this is still a good wine.

Pinot noir sourced from the Woodlands vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Bright cherry fruit studded with spice, pomegranate, pressed flowers, cranberry, mountain herbs and subtle undergrowth at the core. There is a pleasing depth to the dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits with fine powdery tannins, a bright mineral-laden line and a composed, savoury swish of the tail on the exit. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2023 La Maison is Lowestoft’s flagship Pinot Noir and a benchmark of Tasmanian winemaking. Crafted from whole bunches and matured in 500L French oak (25% new), it builds on the legacy of last year’s Jimmy Watson-winning release. Expect a layered nose of raspberry, pomegranate and cherry blossom, followed by a palate of dense red fruits, dried herbs and subtle spice, framed by fine tannins and elegant length.

The 2023 La Maison Pinot Noir is complex and savory, textural and fine. The vineyard is positioned in an urban setting on the banks of the River Derwent overlooking the MONA museum, and the vines were close-planted (8,300 vines per hectare) in 1986 with an interesting trellis arrangement. The wine is layered with rose petals and cherries, fennel seeds and tapenade. It's lovely. The 2023 season was the last of three La Niña years, and here the wine shows ethereal delicacy, which works so nicely with the conditions of the season. Or perhaps because of the season. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateMade with 100% whole cluster, pressed directly to 500L French oak puncheons (15% new) for 13 months. There's a lot going on here – all of it good. Bright red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip tones with hints of cocoa powder, pomegranate, Chinese barbecue joint, amaro, souk-like spice, leaf litter, struck flint, XO sauce, shiitake broth and earth. Pure and spicy red fruits, fine, powdery tannins and a mineral-laden acidity that seems to pull the flavours forward on the palate, finishing long, savoury and true with everything plumb and tickety boo. Just lovely. Drink 2024-2036.

2022 Lowestoft La Maison Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIA$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: StelvinThe 2022 Tasmanian vintage saw one of the coolest and wettest Octobers on record, reducing yields by 30-40%. A cooler ripening season led to wines with intense fruit concentration, higher acidity, and greater elegance. Hand-picked fruit was de-stemmed into 1.5T open-top fermenters, with up to 100% whole clusters added. Natural fermentation occurred with no additives, and gentle pump-overs twice daily were used to avoid over-extraction. After 21 days on skins, the wine was pressed into 500L French oak puncheons (15% new) and aged for 13 months with minimal intervention before bottling.

Boom! You'll probably have to scurry around to secure some bottles of this, as it won the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 2023 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, but it is worth the hunt. It's a beautiful wine with a brilliant ruby hue in the glass and aromas of ripe dark cherry, dried cranberry and raspberry coulis underlined by hints of souk-like spice, amaro herbs from the whole-bunch component, pomegranate, tea leaves, char siu, dried citrus rind, sage and Peking duck. Wonderfully composed and silken on the palate with pitch-perfect fruit expression and bunch tannins; textural and complex with a lacy, mineral acid cadence and a finish that lingers for a long time with exotic spice and pure red and dark fruits. Such a beauty. Drink 2023 - 2043.

2021 Lowestoft Estate Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIA$67. 99Bottle$815.88 DozenABV: 14%Closure: StelvinSpring winds during budburst led to low vine yields, while cooler temperatures extended the ripening period, this combined with the dry conditions produced some excellent quality fruit. The 2021 Pinot Noir was made from hand-picked parcels from the Lowestoft estate vineyard in the Derwent Valley (74%), the East Coast (24%), and the Huon Valley (2%). Batches were fermented separately in open-top fermenters, with up to 25% whole bunches included. Gentle hand plunging and occasional pump-overs resulted in a vibrant color and lifted aroma. The wine was matured in large-format French oak (30% new) for 10 months before being blended and bottled with minimal fining and filtration.

A bright, complex pinot noir sourced from a number of vineyards, predominately the Lowestoft site overlooking the Derwent River. Pure red and dark cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits with hints of Chinese barbecue shop, five-spice, teacake, mushroom, purple floral and subtle leaf litter tones. There is a nice sense of space and clarity in this wine, fine acidity providing the pulse and a sustained red-fruited finish studded with game, amaro and spice. Drink 2023 - 2030.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
