Nine generations of Muzards precede Claude and Hervé, who today control Domaine Lucien Muzard across 16 ha of vineyards in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny Montrachet and Pommard. The family can trace its roots back to 1645, but it was not until the two sons, Claude and Herve took over the domaine from Lucien in 1995 that it began bottling at the estate rather than selling to négociants.
Fruit is sourced from parcels in Maranges and in Santenay, plus a one hectare parcel in the Hautes Côtes with ageing taking place in tank (30%) and the balance in barrel (of which 15% is new). Deep dark red colour with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Spicy red cherry aromas are followed by dried herb, earth, dried meat and subtle black olive notes. Light and fresh across the palate with crunchy like red cherry and winter strawberry fruits to the fore. Lying underneath are earthy graphite like characters, a touch of meatiness and spicy dried herbs. Bright acidity with slightly gritty tannins and an elegant aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
