Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

I was wrong. This hasn’t been released at the same time as the 2017; it’s slated for release in October 2019.
Forewarned.
It’s an out-and-out ripper. Smoky, bunchy, well-fruited, dense, finessed, so many things. Powerful lines delivered with grace. It’s excellent throughout but the finish has that extra something. Drink 2020-2027+

Handpicked and destemmed before stalks were added back to selected parcels to generate complexity. These Estate pinots from Levantine emanate the prettiest perfume of purple flowers. Deeply enticing with dried orange rind, souk-like spices, raspberry and alpine berries. Tannins are finely woven, binding both savoury and fruit elements together. The steady thrum of turned earth and leaf litter, maitake mushroom and the gentle buzz of white pepper make for studious lessons in graceful tension. Drink by 2034.

The Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own 10.5 hectares of some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, along with plots in the two neighbouring villages of Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. In the last 10 years Virgile Lignier has modified his wine-making using whole-bunch vinification ranging from 30-100% depending on the vintage and the vineyard, and he has also reduced the percentage of new oak for maturation with most wines seeing around 30% making its effect seamless in the final wines. They are wines which are often very seductive at a young age which also clearly have the potential for ageing superbly. This very young domaine is now regarded among the very best in the Cotes de Nuits.
Lignier's Bourgogne Rouge is drawn from vines situated mainly in the lieu-dits of Au Pelson and Bons Batons, close to Morey Saint Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, giving the wine a strong Cote de Nuits imprint. It provides a clear introduction to the domaine's approach, with careful whole-bunch use and moderate new oak.

Drawn from a 0.33 ha parcel planted in 1991 just beyond the Morey‐Saint-Denis appellation, Cuvee 823 is made from 100% Pinot Noir grown on clay-limestone soils. Vinified with ambient yeasts, de-stemmed, the wine sees about 13 months in oak (5-10% new), followed by a brief period in stainless steel. The designation "823" follows the pattern of "Tank No. 8" + the vintage year (e.g. "822" = 2022, "823" = 2023).

A cooler and more elegant nose combines notes of kirsch, dark currant, spice and a plethora of floral nuances. There is terrific intensity to the tautly muscular middle weight flavors that display evident power on the mineral-driven, super-sleek and impressively well-balanced, indeed harmonious finale. Exuberantly pinot-like aromas include those of both red and blue fruit, earth and a whisper of the sauvage along with background floral and spice hints.
Other Reviews....
An ultra-spicy and markedly floral nose combines notes of red cherry, wild currant and earth with those of exotic tea and leather nuances. The polished but concentrated and intense middle weight flavors display a lovely sense of verve that carries over to the mineral-driven and well-balanced finale. This almost creamy and mildly warm effort is perhaps not quite as fresh as the Clos de la Roche, but I suspect that the nose will recover once it receives a thorough aeration and my projected range accords the benefit of the doubt that it will. Drink 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is made with 100% whole bunches and matured in used oak this year and that is evident on the nose with open, transparent scents of blackberry, briary and crushed rock aromas. Less opulent than the Clos de la Roche, this is slightly more austere but no less captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, great depth and cohesion, structured towards the finish with touches of melted tar and tobacco. Superb. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Neal Martin - VinousVirgile farms a plot of vines which was replanted in 2003. A little less dense in colour, but with the classic ripe hedonistic style. This is less remarkable on the palate than the Clos de la Roche but I love the long, fine finish. Actually, the fruit builds very well, with good length, this is growing on me.

Very ripe and quite fresh aromas consist of plum liqueur, violet, lavender, leather, warm earth and spice wisps. The dense, palate coating and seductively textured big-bodied flavors possess a plush mouthfeel before terminating in an almost painfully intense finale. This is a bit and exceptionally powerful CdlR that delivers superb length and about the only nit worthy of mention is a trace of warmth. In short, this is a knockout but note well that its constructed accordingly and is not likely to make for especially good early drinking; indeed it may be 25 years before we see this beauty at its full apogee. Drink 2039+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru contains 80% whole bunches this year and underwent just a couple of punch-downs. There is a tiny amount of reduction on the nose as I taste it, gradually opening to reveal raspberry, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins matched with a very fine bead of acidity. This is a very cohesive and refined Grand Cru with a lilting, carefree finish that belies its inherent complexity and persistent. Easy to under-estimate this, I am sure it will age with style. Drink 2024 - 2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous80% whole bunch. Virgile now has 0.80ha to play with, the latest addition being old vines. Planting dates now range from 1944 to 1990. Gorgeous deep purple. This Clos de la Roche has a brilliant bouquet with blue fruit mixed in to a vast range of deep complex red and black notes, both acidity and tannins in the right place. There is a classic grainy texture here too and wonderful length.

An even earthier nose reveals its layered aromas of various dark berries and lavender, violet and soft spice nuances. There is more volume and power to the moderately concentrated and muscular medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a firm, austere and solidly structured finale. This should amply reward a decade plus of cellaring. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Chezeaux 1er Cru contains 100% whole bunches fruit this year. That comes through on the nose with more tangible sous-bois and black pepper elements, quite open with dusky black fruit and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very lithe in the mouth, the whole bunches are tangible but not overriding fruit or terroir expression. Delicate touches of cracked black pepper and clove line the finish that exerts a gentle but insistent grip. Excellent. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Les Faconnieres is a beautifully situated vineyard located just below the ‘heart’ of Clos de la Roche, and Virgile's vines were planted in 1948. Often this wine is very close to Grand cru in quality and depth.

Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable at present. Otherwise there is very good vibrancy to the dense and muscular but sleek medium weight plus flavors that possess lovely definition, all wrapped in a mouth coating, mineral-driven and powerful finale. This built-to-age and very firm effort will need to develop more depth, but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. Drink 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru, which contains 70-80% whole bunches, has a perfumed and floral bouquet of violets and iris. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very focused and perhaps the most sophisticated of all Virgile Lignier’s cuvées. He comments that this was closed 10 days ago but to his surprise has completely changed in recent days. On this showing, it will surely be the "must-buy" from Lignier-Michelot’s range. Superb. This tiny vineyard of en la rue de Vergy is just over three hectares in size and borders directly on to three Grand cru vineyards of Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays. Virgile owns 1.9 ha of vines planted 1975 situated quite high on the slope just above Clos de Tart where the limestone is quite close to the surface, similar to the highest vineyards in Chambolle Musigny which it borders on the southern side.

A slightly cooler though still liqueur-like nose features notes of black raspberry, violet and subtle spice influences. A much less expressive nose reluctantly offers up pretty floral and ripe aromas of plum liqueur and various dark berries. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a caressing, indeed almost creamy mid-palate, that is highly seductive, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and refreshing finale. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes contains 80% whole bunches this year. The palate is more balanced with a sweet core of candied black cherry fruit intermixed with cracked black pepper and clove. Mild reduction reduces the expressiveness and blurs the distinction of what are clearly ripe fruit aromas. The delicious and attractively vibrant flavors are not as dense as those of the old vines Morey though they do offer sneaky good length on the youthfully austere and moderately rustic finale. This is good but not as good as the best of these villages. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Bertin" contains around 80% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet with powerful black cherry and cassis fruit. Neal Martin - VinousHere too the expressive and more elegant nose is markedly ripe but it's also much fresher with its perfumed combination of very spicy red and dark currant aromas. This comes from a block of younger vines planted in 2009. "I developed the property with the owners, and in exchange for my soil work, they let me pick my block." Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E has a very concentrated nose of warm crushed blackberries and black cherries, dried rose petal, saline, smoke, sweet strawberry and raspberry preserves with notions of amaro, dusty earth and old leather. The palate is light to medium-bodied and youthfully coiled with a firm frame of lightly chalky tannins and good freshness, finishing long on a citrus peel note.

Erin Brooks - Wine Advocate (Dec 2019)One of the highlights in this range, the 2017 Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Block E is an outrageously beautiful, vivid wine. Deep, unctuous and resonant in the glass, the 2017 possesses tremendous richness and intensity. Inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha infuse the 2017 with character and personality. Even with all of its fruit intensity, the 2017 has more than enough structure to develop in bottle for years to come.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
