Laurent Roumier has a superb holding of just over half a hectare of vines which was replanted in 1975 and is located in the lieu dit of Grand Maupertuis in the higher part of Clos Vougeot bordering on to Grands Echezeaux, not far from Musigny. This parcel was worked en metayage by Georges Roumier from the 1950’s and was transferred to Laurent Roumier from the 1997 vintage. This is a remarkably rich deep and stylish wine that would put some notable Musigny’s to shame.

Sourced from two single vineyards in Geelong, one in the Moorabool Valley and another from the Bellarine with all the fruit handpicked and fermented separately to keep the individual vineyard characters distinct. Each parcel was treated the same; wild yeast fermented with around 50% whole bunches. The wine was then matured for 11 months in 40% new French oak barriques.

Fruit was sourced predominately (75%) a low yielding vineyard in Drumborg (Henty) with vines planted in the 1980’s. The balance of the fruit comes from Geelong. The destemmed fruit ferments in a combination of 5,00-litre open vats and 3,000-litre wooden fermenters; the fruit in the vats gets punched down, while the fruit in the wooden fermenters is pumped over daily. The wine then matures in a mixture of old and new (approximately 10%) French oak of various sizes.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a light red hue. Blossoming out of the glass are perfumed aromas of violets, red to dark cherries and strawberries infused with fresh herbs. Subtle forest floor and spice notes are also evident. Juicy cherry and strawberry fruits are supplely layered across the palate with notions of forest floor, dried herbs, anise and spice threaded through the back half. Polished tannins finishing with a juicy freshness, plenty of spice and a long moreish aftertaste.

It’s just on medium-bodied, and I’m thinking dried roses or rosehip, pomegranate, strawberry, light grainy almost graphite tannin, a little chicory bitterness, lots of crunch and fragrance on a firm sappy finish of good length. Ray Nadeson writes some of the most lyrical wine labels going. His hope with this wine is to reveal tannins that feel 'like you are melting into a soft cushion'. Well, they are certainly supple. A big proponent of whole-bunch fermentation, his '19 is striking in its structure and force of personality, with an imposing herbal imprint, chocolate cherry and red berries. Balance of oak/fruit/tannin is impressive, but the sustained length is that and more. Drink by 2028.

Intense, complex and very Burgundian like the nose offers up a mixture of red to dark cherries, rhubarb, winter strawberries, hints of stalk, forest floor, dried herbs and spicy cedar. The wines from Levantine Hill have been on the steady incline over recent vintages and are finally beginning to justify their lofty price tags. From the outstanding 2015 vintage this Pinot Noir saw maturation in French oak for a period of 9 months.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a fading orange red hue. The nose offers up a very fragrant bouquet of red to dark cherries intermixed with faint hints of dried cherries, strawberries, gamey characters, forest floor and spicy cedar. Rich ripe dark cherry and strawberry flavours supplely kiss the palate with notions of dried cherries, some gaminess, forest floor characters, subtle elements of stem and spicy cedar ensuing. Velvet smooth tannins and well balanced acidity. Superb power wave with a very long and savoury conclusion of ripe cherries, strawberries, traces of dried cherries, gamey forest floor characters and spicy cedar.

There seems to be a gentle touch this vintage, with wonderful fruit expression. A pinot with all the fine aromas and flavours the variety can muster, yet it’s restrained with mouth-watering raspberry-like acidity and silky tannins. There’s a savoury edge to this, lighter framed yet highly enjoyable. Drink by 2029.
