A Magnificent Fortified Wine.
This wine has been matured over many years by Geoff Hardy and Ian Leask. Deep sienna brown colour with olive green hue, clearly showing its age. Superb nose of rancio, followed by raisin and spice with toffee end notes. Warm spiritous end note. The palate delivers everything that the nose suggests – rancio flavours, toffee and caramel over a background of warm brandy spirit. Perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of rancio, honey and raisins. A superb drink.

Pierre Ferrand Blanc Pineau des Charentes (750ml)Cognac, FRANCE$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 17%Closure: CorkPineau des Charentes is generally categorised as a fortified wine (aka 'mistelle' or 'vin de liqueur' in France). However, being a blend of unfermented or only lightly-fermented grape must and Cognac eau-de-vie it could be argued that the genre is more akin to a liqueur. The net effect is a disjointed blend of grape juice and spirit that needs at least a year in cask in order to integrate. The ruby or red styles are made from the same grapes as dry red Bordeaux. Both red, white and rose versions are typically drunk chilled as an aperitif, a digestif or included as an ingredient in cocktails.
Tasting note: Bright polished copper appearance. First inhalations yield generous scents of dried apricot, wild honey and suggestions of sweet spices. A silky entry develops into a soft, medium bodied, semi sweet profile with flavours of apricot, dilute honey and just enough acidity to keep it fresh. Finish is clean and gently warming with a hint of prune. Excellent balance. Dry, refreshing aftertaste of prune, honey and dried apricot showing reasonable persistence. 17% Alc./Vol.

Malaga is the name of a town, a Mediterranean Sea Port and a famous drink, that very few people have heard of today. The history of Malaga dates back 600 B.C. when vineyards were planted by the Greeks, buts it’s popularity did not emerge until the 17th and 18th Century, and peaked in the mid 19th Century, when vineyard acreage reached an astonishing 247,000 acres. Great Britain and North America were the key markets, and hardly surprising given the rich sweet flavours. The demise of Malaga coincided with two viticultural disasters – the occurrence of Phyloxera and Powdery Mildew. The catastrophe reduced the number of wineries from 100 to 3, and today it is only the serious wine buff whose heard of the variety. The two wines reviewed include a Malaga, produced from Moscato, whilst the second wine is produced from Pedro Ximinez. Traditionally, the wines were made by drying the grapes, thus concentrating the sugar and in order to achieve this the grapes were left out on mats for 7 to 20 days. Today some of the Malaga is still made this way, but the most common method is by incorporating reduced grape must. The sweet grape must is reduced to a third of its volume by heating, producing a rich luscious deep brown liquid. The wines from Malaga are used as desert wines, with soft cheeses, hazelnut, figs, dates, rich chocolate cakes and orange cakes. The flavours of Malaga dance on your tongue and integrate beautifully with the right food.
If you’re into glitz, then this is your wine. It comes in a very bright gold coated bottle, which will match ones Louis the XVII furniture perfectly!
Deep caramel colour, with green olive edges. The nose is subdued at first, but slowly evolves to reveal nuances of raisins and walnuts. The palate is luscious, mouthfilling with flavours of raisins and honey. Silky creamy texture followed by very long honey raisin aftertaste. Enjoy. -

- Ransom Sweet Vermouth (500ml)UNITED STATES$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenABV: 17.8%A blend of organically and conventionally farmed aromatic white varietals, including Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Riesling and Pinot Gris. The wines are fortified with brandy alambically distilled in-house. The vermouth is then barrel aged in mixed French oak with an infusion of Wormwood, Sarsaparilla, Sassafras, Wild Cherry Bark, Red Cinchona Bark, Dandelion Root, Hibiscus Flower, Orris Root, Cardamom Pods, Blessed Thistle, Chamomile, Orange Peel, Verbena, Spearmint Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Arch Angel Root, Lemon Peel, Vanilla Beans, Cacao Nibs, Coffee Beans, Walnuts, Black Mission Figs, Medjool Dates and Dried Cherries. Ransom's expression harkens back to the flourishing cocktail culture of the Belle Époque, when joie de vivre filled the air and Vermouth made the evolutionary leap from charlatan snake oil and disguised refuse to a distinguished mainstay of the era’s most popular drinks - the Martinez, the Negroni, and across the pond, the Manhattan. The vermouth is finally sweetened to a bittersweet balance with a proprietary blend of Muscat grape juice, maple syrup and Turbinado sugar and minimally filtered before bottling. While it's an original recipe with elements of whimsy, it remains fundamentally a classical formulation, rooted in flavours of wormwood and the quinate barks. 17.8% Alc./Vol.

Roberto Amillo La Saca Centennial Solera Palo Cortado Sherry (500ml)Jerez, SPAIN$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 22%Other reviews... There is a new selection from sherry collector Roberto Amillo, who has now joined forces with the Altanza winery from La Rioja to purchase and bottle the NV La Saca Palo Cortado, which comes from a centenary solera purchased from a family. The wine has notes of rusty iron and saltpeter that took me to a phase of biological aging in the wine, and it also has plenty of oak, even with some creaminess and spiciness from the oak (noticeable especially in the nose). It had notes of nutmeg and felt spicier as it sat in the glass. I tasted it next to some 30- to 40-year-old wines, and it seemed of approximately the same age. The palate is medium-bodied, with some sharpness and elegance. I'd call it an Amontillado rather than Palo Cortado. It does have elegance and intensity, but it's narrow rather than round, and it seems to have been concentrated due to being untouched for a number of years. 360 half-liter bottles produced per year.

The Palo Cortado from the boutique Colección Roberto Amillo was the highest scoring Palo Cortado in the Guía Peñín 2013, with 96 points. No wonder this is the wine Robert is most proud of. As with the other releases, it was sourced from a renowned bodega, in this case an old solera from Williams & Humbert in Jerez. A wonderful Palo Cortado, a classic example of the genre. Saline and acidic, with just enough dried fruits and oak to balance it out. Recommended - possibly the best wine in the Colección. 5 stars - sherrynotes.com ...The very aromatic NV Palo Cortado was sourced from Williams & Humbert in Jerez, from a special bota selected by Paco Salas, the capataz of the bodega for 33 years. It has aromas of candied fruit, flowers and even cherries in liqueur under the spirity and nutty aromas natural in this kind of wine. It has a certain creaminess and is very elegant, clean and balanced. This is power and elegance. These wines are presented in unusual 500-milliliter square glass bottles. As with all the wines in the collection, 1,000 half-liter bottles were filled in 2011.

Nutty and intense, like peanut brittle reduced to liquid form—but with less than half the corn syrup. It delivers beautiful texture and intensity; it's almost fruity, but then mushroom, almond and macadamia nut take over. With perfect weight and a finish that doesn't quit, this is a great dry Sherry.

Michael Schachner - Wine Enthusiast MagazinePale tawny with a hint of green at the rim. Very nutty nose with the pungent creaminess of well-aged sherry and just enough sweetness to compensate for the dry treacle character. Jancis Robinson MW (November 2021) - 1947 Seppelt Para Liqueur Port (738ml)Barossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$295. 00Bottle$3540.00 DozenClosure: Cork
The winemaking philosophy of the house of Seppelt is clearly evident in their outstanding collection of Tawny wines, though in particular, the Para Port, named after the Para river that flows through the centre of the Barossa Valley. The 1947 release was produced from Grenache, Shiraz & Mataro grapes. To add complexity, a small addition of very old Tawny Port was married to the wine, after which it was transferred to 2000 litre casks and left to mature for approximately 18 years.
Seppelt Para Port has become an Australian legend, instantly recognisable in its unique bottle, with a distinctive style highlighting rich fruit flavours and complexity. Very rare. 738ml bottle. No tasting notes available.

So now gone are the 375ml “Terrain series” bottles and in come the traditional 750ml Portugese Vintage Port bottles.

Seppeltsfield is a national treasure for its fortified wines and every time I drive past my eyes light up at the sight of the old gravity-fed winery and the memory of the smell in the fortified cellar fills my wee noggin. I love the place. A tawny with 21 years under its belt in front of us here. Medium-tawny in the glass with the usual head-spinningly complex array of aromas and flavours that make us flip our lids for this stuff. Candied citrus fruits, fruitcake spices, mahogany, brandy snaps, Christmas cake, toffee, rancio, roast and candied nuts and layer upon layer of spice and comforting whiffs of warm, woody tones and leather. Viscous, unctuous and wildly complex, the transposition of aroma to flavour completes and then starts multiplying, reaching a crescendo before slowly fading at a glacial pace with an amazing length of flavour and sense of freshness. Wonderful. Drink 2023 - 2053.

Dave Brookes - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionIf anything in the fortified realm nudges perfection, this is it. Typical aromas of molasses, orange verbena, roasted walnut husk, tamarind, clove and the medley of everything available (and not) in the Moroccan souk. Yet what makes this wine is the balance between decadent sugar levels and the undercarriage of savoriness, manifesting as bright acidity and chewy, unctuous, moreish rails. You know you are drinking something akin to liquid diabetes, but you want the next glass! Drink or hold, as this is indestructible.

There is no other fortified winemaker in the world able to match the range and sheer quality of the Seppeltsfield portfolio laid down in 1874 (and nourished each year thereafter), headed by the sublime 100 Year Old Para Vintage Tawny. Seppeltsfield Wines are the proud custodians of the priceless collection of fortified wines spans more than 150 years of winemaking excellence. This heritage includes a range of fortified wines that is Australia's most diverse and unsurpassed in reputation for quality. In 1866, plans to build a new stone cellar were started by Joseph Seppelt, the founder of Seppeltsfield. In 1878 the stone cellar was completed by Benno Seppelt. To celebrate, in a gesture both unique and inspirational, Benno selected a puncheon of his finest wine and gave instructions that it was not to be bottled for 100 years. This became a magnificent tradition and Seppeltsfield Wines is now the only winery in the world to have significant stocks of wine laid down in consecutive vintages over 100 years. Over the generations, the 100 year old Para Vintage Tawny has retained remarkable consistency of style and character. A full bodied tawny style, awesome in its power and concentration, every drop holds the promise of an exquisite life enriching experience. Produced from Mataro, Shiraz & Grenache grapes, the wine was aged in 500 litre casks (puncheon) for 100 years in the 1878 cellar. Dense impenetrable olive brown colour with distinctive green edge. The nose displays an initial lift of alcohol followed by burnt toffee, raisin fruit cake and vanilla aromas. Very powerful aged characters tend to dominate the fruit and combine with an obvious sweet vanillin oak lift. The palate is sweet and viscous showing burnt toffee, raisin fruit and dark chocolate. There is a strong influence of wood aged characters that outshines the fruit. The finish has remarkable intensity enhanced by acidity and alcohol giving considerable flavour length. An extremely complex wine showing a greater influence of wood aged complexity than many other vintages. A very fresh and vibrant wine. (Allow 2 weeks for delivery)

Seppelt Para Liqueur Tawny was named after the Para river that flows through the centre of the Barossa Valley. First released in 1953, it quickly became an Australian legend with its distinctive style highlighting rich fruit flavours. It became instantly recognisable in its unique bottle. Vintages are now sought after as with time in the cellar these fortifieds achieve a stunning complexity.
What's old is new again as rare parcels are presently being drawn off for a broader audience to appreciate. This 1971 vintage is superbly 'repackaged' in an old world, wax sealed oval flask and presented in its own timber box. As a gift that will rival Penfolds Grange for prestige and sheer luxury these national treasures should be on everyone's short list. 21.1% Alc./Vol.

Has a distinctive yellow-gold colour, different to that of all other Rutherglen topaques; a classic array of cold tea leaf aromas joining with caramel, shortbread biscuit and toffee flavours; it is somehow brighter and crisper than most other Rutherglen topaques, yet does not sacrifice complexity. 500ml.

This is a wine for the future - for when that moment eventuallyarrives, say 2010, what ever you do, don't drink the lot in onego. Drinking a bottle of Vintage Port in one sitting is apractice that belongs to the three bottle club of the 18thCentury and is where it should remain! Produced from shirazgrapes planted in 1921, grown on Jack's Block this wine hasalready won 2 Trophies, 5 Golds and 4 Silvers. Deep brick redcolour. The nose is restrained and will blossom with time -working it up, reveals delightful marzipan, almond, ripe plumsand spicy raisins. The palate is concentrated, with rich raisinplum fruit flavours superbly balanced with beautiful brandyspirit and firm tannin grip. The spirit provides the backboneand lasts well into the aftertaste - its mouthfilling warmsensation is well juxtaposed to the marzipan notes. Amagnificent port - just be patient!\Z

The 2016 Vintage Port was originally seen about a week before bottling in a more unsettled incarnation. It is now in the USA and showing in a rather forward fashion for Taylor's. It was aged for 20 months in wood and comes in with 102 grams of residual sugar. This is a pleasure just to smell, with its hints of herbs, eucalyptus and blackberries. Some more time in bottle has made this a classic Port from start to finish in terms of aromatics and flavors. In my almost-40-year history of Port drinking, Taylor's was and is always one of my benchmarks for what a Port should taste and smell like. This delivers all that in spades.
Now, it is not the most powerful or massive Taylor's. Dry and a bit tense after it sat in the glass for an hour, this finished with moderate bang and pop a couple of hours later. I've certainly seen young Taylor's with more intensity. A creature of its vintage, it is a very elegant Port with a touch of understatement. It shows off focus and freshness more than jammy richness. If it is not quite as tightly wound as in some years, the typical profile is still there and the structure is still very good. Indeed, some two days after opening it did not lose any power. The Fonseca is probably more powerful in the Fladgate Group offerings in this vintage (and, perhaps, the somewhat deeper Taylor's balances the tannins differently), but the fruit here is even more gorgeous and seductive. Indeed, the fruit is often sensational, the biggest bragging point here. I gave it a couple of extra days open to be sure just how lovely it was. It was particularly closed on the first pours, when many young Ports are exuberant. It eventually became far more expressive. How you evaluate this will depend on what you most want in Port. If you want that old-school vibe, perhaps Fonseca will serve you better this year. If you want to drool over sensational fruit, this will work just fine. You'll think I'm being stingy.
Given how precocious it seems just now—it certainly won't make your mouth turn immediately to cotton and your tongue seize up—the fruit is so good that some will dare to drink it now. (If you do, you can unfriend me on Facebook and the rest of social media, not that I'm judgmental or anything.) Harmony and complexity will still take time; there is no shortcut for complexity and harmony. Overall, the purity and flavor make this rise above the crowd. How far above still remains to be seen. I'd like to see more proof of development here around 2030, more evidence that this will fulfill all of its potential.

The 2016 Vintage Port has an aristocratic bouquet with tight wound aromas of blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, black olive and a light, marine-tinged element, perhaps almost peat-like. The palate is just beautiful with fine, chiseled tannins and a perfect line of acidity. There is that almost "arching" structure one always seeks in a great Taylor’s with a gentle but insistent grip towards the finish. It is everything you really want from a Vintage Port. JamesSuckling.comThe 2017 Taylor's Vintage Port comes from their three quintas: Vargellas, de Terra Feita and do Junco, picking commencing at Vargellas on September 1, the earliest since 1945. Now this boasts a bold and more flamboyant bouquet vis-à-vis the Croft with layers of blackcurrant, blueberries, violet and allspice. Wonderful definition here and as it ratchets up through the gears with aeration manages to maintain impressive delineation. The palate is medium, rather full-bodied. The first impression is one of freshness, completely disguising that summer’s dryness and warmth, a disarming finesse built around the frame of tannins that would have been impossible years ago. It is a silky-smooth Taylor’s, one of the most polished 2017 Vintage Ports with energy and tension flooding through the finish. Neal Martin – VinousThe 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend aged for approximately 20 months in wood. It comes in with 100 grams of residual sugar. A step up (or two) on the 2016, this shows fine depth, more focus, vivid fruit and serious power. It's not particularly thick, austere or astringent, but this is built for the long haul. It is potentially a great Taylor's, effortlessly combining brilliant fruit and structure. It tastes great now (today, it is far more vivid than its Vinha Velha sibling), but the power makes this hard to drink today. So, have some patience. It will need some time, probably a lot more than indicated, and will likely last longer than indicated as well. As noted in the accompanying article, I don't see much point to impossibly long drinking windows. At some point, reevaluation is required.
At the moment, it seems to be a step up on the Vinha Velha, although that is far more closed. I'd pick this today, but in time, both undoubtedly will have more tales to tell. Great young Ports go through many phases, and both are great young Ports. When ten-year anniversary tastings are done, this will have to be on the shortlist of greats to reconsider to determine how the best in the vintage are meeting expectations. Drink 2030-2077.
