2025 Bordeaux Pre-Arrival

The 2025 story is a familiar one for the modern era: a hot, dry season that threatened to stress the vines. However, while the summer was among the hottest on record, an abundance of cool nights allowed the fruit to retain vital acidity. The result is a paradox of style, the wines have modest alcohol levels that nevertheless possess vibrant fruit and silky, abundant tannins. As Antonio Galloni noted, "The combination of soaring aromatics, intense fruit, full, rich flavours, brisk acids and modest alcohols is something I have never seen in the red wines of Bordeaux." Yields were the main casualty, however, with many properties reporting a 50% reduction or more in volume compared to long-term averages.

Reviews to date highlight a compelling mix of power and drinkability in the best 2025s, alongside the structure to age effortlessly in the cellar if desired. James Suckling has already drawn lofty comparisons, noting that "Some of the best wines are at the same level as the great contemporary vintages of 2019 and 2016." While it's early days to determine if the 2025s will match the consistency of those years, for sheer style and outright quality, it looks to be a fair guide.
