Pinot Noir was first planted in the Nursery Block at Best's in the late 1860's which are today thought to be some of the oldest in the world. It is believed that the Pinot Noir cuttings used to propagate the Nursey Block were sourced from some of the finest vineyards in Burgundy and brought across as part of the James Busby collection.
The fruit for this wine comes from 1980 and 1987 Pinot Noir plantings in the Concongella vineyards, at Best’s Great Western and the 1997 plantings at the elevated vineyard at Salvation Hills.

A decidedly moreish Pinot that’s highlighted by fresh, juicy fruit, excellent power and a silky feel.

Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant crimson red hue. Fragrant aromas of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry blossom from the glass trailed by hints of anise, bramble, forest floor and spice. Fresh, juicy dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours impress with their intensity and supple flow. Notions of forest floor, subtle bramble, dried herb and spicy cedar lend further interest. Excellent power wave and polished tannins. Finishes long, moreish and silky.

This bold Barossa Shiraz was one of Robert Parker’s darling wines in the early 2000’s meriting scores of up to 99 points. Produced from a selection of only the best barrels utilising the estate’s oldest blocks of Shiraz, this formidable wine is only released in the great vintages and whilst not widely distributed on Australian shores it can be found selling for $150.00 per bottle on the winery's website. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French and American hogsheads for a period of 30 months.

Rich, thick and incredibly concentrated with an exceptionally long, plush finish.

Impenetrable inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Dark plum, liquorice and blackberry scents waft through the nostrils trailed by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, incredibly concentrated and powerful, the palate has a thick layer of opulent dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits flowing across it. Spicy vanillin oak, ripe blueberry and earthy mocha elements ensue. Firm and dense yet velvety with a solid tannin framework supporting the fruit. Concludes exceptionally long and plush.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

    Other Reviews….
Sourced from the Estate’s oldest vines, the final wine is a barrel selection. Maturation is in a mix of new French and American oak for two and a half years. This is quintessential Barossa Shiraz. Under cork. An opaque black/maroon core with a dark magenta rim, this is finely balanced and offering good complexity, even at this early stage. The nose reveals aromas of chocolate, blackberries, plums, cassis, cocoa powder and coffee beans. Seamless and intense, there is great length here through to silky tannins. An absolutely cracking Barossa Valley Shiraz which will sit with the best of the vintage. A twenty-year proposition. Drink 2026-2046.

Deep, opaque crimson with vibrant purple hues. Aromas of blackberry, black plum and blueberry are layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, espresso and subtle cedar. The palate is full-bodied and richly concentrated, delivering generous dark fruit supported by firm tannins and beautifully integrated oak. Notes of mocha, cocoa and savoury spice build through the mid-palate, while balanced acidity provides freshness and definition beneath the richness. At 15% Alc Vol, the finish is long, powerful and persistent, carrying dark berry, pepper and chocolate characters. One of the best 2023 Barossa Shiraz in my book. A powerful Barossa Shiraz delivering exceptional concentration and flavour.

    ABV: 50.4%

Just when you thought the days of $250 dollar 30+ year old grains seems to be long passed, we bring back the value in a big way. Purchased direct-from-the-bottler, sourced from a distillery whose spirit has traditionally played an important role in some of Scotland’s best-known blends, now taken out of the blending room and given the opportunity to stand entirely on its own. North British is never bad above the 25 year mark, and extended maturation can transport the profile into layers of vanilla, caramel and honeyed sweetness, alongside coconut, soft fruit, gentle spice and polished oak. Undeniably a single grain bargain, with enough character to be bottled in its own right rather than disappearing into a blend. Refill Oloroso Sherry butt 262085 yielded 336 bottles. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Vanilla, toffee, grains, dried fruit, dark ripe berries, a little orange peel and roasted almonds. Taste: Soft, smooth and creamy, sweet cereal aromas, vanilla, toffee, dark ripe berries, a touch of oak spice and a light cocoa note. Finish: Long finish, dried fruit, a touch of honey and vanilla, as well as a subtle oak spice and a hint of cocoa. - whiskybase.com

Another obscurity from a large-scale Diageo-owned distillery that usually winds up in blends or in the Singleton bottlings that we carry every now and then. 344 bottles were finished in a first-fill oloroso hogshead. No tasting notes on this specific cask, however, there are some indications from whiskyfun who sampled Cask#11, which should be quite close. 55.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Sister Cask #11 tasted ... Colour: mahogany. Nose: very vinous, but in the good sense, really giving you the feeling of nosing some old brandy de Jerez, only much less sweetened or boosted by whatever-it-is. Bags of chocolate, powdered coffee, fig spirit, walnut liqueur… With water: very ripe figs and roasted pecans join the party. Mouth (neat): rich, firing straight away on leather, tobacco and bitter orange. Then it carries on with more leather, tobacco and bitter orange, before settling on more leather yet, tobacco and bitter orange. And chocolate. What you would call a compact and coherent palate. With water: becomes spicier, in a lovely fashion, with several kinds of pepper and, above all, plenty of juniper and clove. Finish: long and creamy, chocolatey again. Pepper and chocolate are still dancing together very nicely. Comments: we like this compact sherried Glendullan rather a lot. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

"It grabbed me from the very first dram... an absolute no brainer." - whiskybase.com

At the price, there's absolutely no reason to hold back on this value Highland Park. All the Orcadian hallmarks will be here - warm honey canopied by rich oak, a drift of peat and soft sea breeze… These natural strength bottlings can be amazingly concentrated yet graceful spirits. Signatory have opted for a little extra complexity and richness with elevage in a first-fill oloroso butt. 608 bottles were decanted at 55.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Knowing how good Glenlivet can be from Signatory, we've secured a little more of this than some of the other bottlings in the latest shipment. Also, we're back to a world where Signatory is a leader in both price and quality, so the confidence is high and the risk is low. Some of these au naturale Glenlivets are known to be clean and refreshing, others extremely complex with an old school vibe, especially when they're out of sherry, like this is. It could reasonably sell for more, but we're passing on the savings to move it fast. 522 bottles were drawn from a first-fill oloroso sherry butt. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.

Inchgower is often referred to as “The Manzanilla of Speyside” due to its proximity to the sea and a delicate saltiness that comes with the make. This fascinating departure from Bourbon wood sees full-term maturation in a first-fill Sicilian Marsala wine cask, adding a dense, Mediterranean sweet-fruit complexity that complements the maritime distillate without completely hiding its character. Something slightly coastal and a little luscious awaits! The outturn was 306 bottles from a first-fill Marsala hogshead. 59.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A new 2026 batch of Edradour's PX Sherry Cask lands, one year older than the previous offering. Andrew Symington's signature flourish places impact before elegance in a whisky matured entirely in first-fill Pedro Ximénez (sweet) sherry butts to mark the distillery's bicentennial. Offering a decadent profile of molasses, jammy stewed fruits, earthy malt, and a warm baking spice kick at a price that's completely accessible, it will be your fireside companion, a fine dessert whisky or a preferred dram for whenever you feel like spoiling yourself. This style isn't for everyone, but it is a rallying call to fans of sherried malts longing for the bargains of yesteryear. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and natural in colour.

Beautifully fleshed and deeply fruited with a long, refined finish.

Possibly their best yet release, the 2023 vintage is a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier. Dense pitch black heart with a dark red hue. Showing impressive aromatic lift, the nose is led by blackberry, liquorice and dark plum scents followed by subtle smoky cedar, peppered fennel and apricot notes. The beautifully fleshed, mid weighted palate is generously detailed with blackberry and liquorice fruits over a spicy dark plum, vanillin cedar and peppered earth back drop. Polished, almost velvet like tannin structure with a long, deeply fruited yet refined finish.

Co-fermented with 2% viognier; matured in 18% new French barriques. A vibrant, plummy red. There was no reserve in '23, and the fruit mainly went into this. The result is a nicely perfumed wine with red and black fruits, freshly crushed peppercorns and a little anise. The palate is medium bodied and gently plush, with gently chewy, persistent tannins rounding out a delicious wine to drink over the next four to six years. Outstanding value. Drink by 2034.

Home Hill is one of your classic Australian vineyard retreats that functions as both a serious winery and a charming getaway with restaurant included. The focus here is primarily on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sylvaner and Sparkling wine, but their track record really shines with Pinot. Over the years they have clearly established themselves as one of Tasmania’s best and most consistent producers of the varietal, culminating in their 2014 Home Hill Reserve Pinot Noir taking out the Jimmy Watson Trophy.

Rich, silky and powerful yet light on its feet this a super seductive Tassie Pinot.

The Landslide Pinot Noir is sourced from newer plantings and is fermented and raised in mostly old French barriques for 8 months. Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a vibrant crimson red hue. Perfumed like aromatics of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flood the olfactory senses followed by some fresh herb, forest floor, subtle brambly cedar and spice notes. Rich, silky and powerful yet light on its feet, moreish red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours meld into a fresh herb infused back drop of forest floor, bramble and spicy cedar. "Doesn't hold back at all... Rich sherry, rich smoke, nice strength—it just works". / "...a superb example of excellent value for money." - whiskybase.com

Notwithstanding recent pricing on Edradour's Ballechin and several Ardbegs, this is easily one of the most exciting peated whiskies we currently have on offer. At Bunnahabhain they refer to the style as “Moine”. Independents aren't permitted to use that title, so they reference nearby Loch Staoisha instead. The undeniably rare 40ppm output is usually reserved for blenders, yet more than holds its own against Islay compatriots. Wide, tall stills synergise dense smoke with Bunnah’s naturally briny character, creating a spirit that's both coastal and deeply peated. The complexity and divergence can be significant between bottlings. The smoke is strong, often of the cured meat variety, but generally not as maritime as that of Islay's south coast. At close to natural strength and with added input from first and second fill Oloroso casks, you can expect a diverse and immensely tasty rush of flavour. Find out why this 'new' Islay classic is gaining popularity so fast. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... "Very decent peated Bunna for the age and the price. Not a huge fan of the nose but the palate delivers. Some great bbq, dark fruit, spicy menthol peat and a very enjoyable finish."

"Very powerful. Strong peat and heavy barrel influence. Doesn't hold back at all. For the style, it doesn't taste too young. Relentless. Salted liquorice is the main note on the palate. Candy. It's not my favorite style, but I can enjoy it for what it is, and it's a really fun drink. Very well done and a great price. - whiskybase.com

Crafted by a prestigious Barossa winery, this Shiraz draws its name from the ancient limestone deposits layering its 1962 planted vineyard. Co-fermented with 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 17 months in French oak (25% new), it’s a sleek, powerful expression of its terroir.

Representing a lighter shade of Barossa, the suite of wine from ***** gets better each year. While this is full-bodied in terms of extract and alcohol, it is vibrant, subtly reductive, detailed and immaculately poised, making for effortless drinking. Limestone soils impart a je ne sais quoi tension to a whirl of white pepper, clove, boysenberry, deli meats and lilac. Yet what makes this so impressive is the combination of tannin, juicy freshness and confident oak handling, all boding well for cellaring. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Screw cap.

"Excellent integration of multiple flavors." - whiskyadvocate.com

Glenmorangie’s Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden, together with Master Blender Gillian Macdonald have captured their fascination for spice markets in a new limited edition. Initially bourbon-aged Glenmorangie was finished in four cask types: Moroccan red wine casks from European oak (a first for the distillery), New charred oak casks, Shaved, toasted red wine casks, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The four-way finish was a challenge, partly because raw, new charred oak and high-ester wine staves can rapidly inject bitter wood tannins or aggressive dryness, so the team had to systematically sample the warehouse rows to catch the exact month of optimal wood integration, ensuring the exotic spices framed the spirit rather than smothered it. The final whisky lands at 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The sixth edition in Glenmorangie’s “Tale of” series, following Tale of Cake, Winter, Forest, Tokyo, and Ice Cream. This offers cinnamon, clove, baked apple, and tiramisu sweet- ness on the nose, with lovely warmth and balanced spice. More cinnamon, then baking spice on a soft, balanced palate, with creamy vanilla on the back palate. The finish offers chocolate, more balanced spice, and hints of red berries. Excellent integration of multiple flavors. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The nose offers more of a floral sensation than anything, but the spices certainly come out on the palate. The Glenmorangie A Tale of Spices largely delivers on its promise, but the cloying red wine influence doesn't sit entirely right. That's probably a me-thing. Otherwise an interesting exercise that works out on the whole. - wordsofwhisky.com

...First impressions surprise: This doesn’t nose as particularly spicy, though the red wine barrels (fresh and stripped) make an impact right away. This doesn’t come across with any particularly aromatic herbaceousness, but rather a chewy, doughy character that I often associate with red wine or Marsala barrels. Bold cereal and nougat notes offer an indistinct maltiness, leathery and hemp-like. The palate continues that boldly malty theme with notes of ground almonds and almond milk, coconut husks, and oily wood. Again, it isn’t particularly spicy aside from some notes of saffron and green cardamom, with a lightly tannic quality enduring. I didn’t find much of anything in the official tasting notes at play here, which run from nutmeg to ginger to rose, though the finish does find a fleeting floral quality before retreating to its intensely ropey, barnyard-like qualities. It’s never bad; it’s just not memorable in any way, especially when compared to some of the other delights in this series." - drinkhacker.com

Founded in 1964 by a collective of Chardonnay growers, Champagne Jacquart has grown to become the region's largest grower-producer. Today, the brand maintains complete control over its production, sourcing 100% of its fruit exclusively from vineyards owned by its members.
Typically made from a blend of around 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 25% Pinot Meunier, Jacquart’s Mosaique generally includes 25-35% reserve wines and is matured for at least 3 years on lees.

At less than $60, a Champagne of this quality is a rare find in today’s market.

Delighting the olfactory senses are aromas of baked bread, yeast lees and citrus which are complexed by whiffs of brioche and oily toast like notes. A famous old Champagne house, this is a non-vintage release from them, representing both flavour and value. How soon before we lament the days when we could find a good bottle of champers for under one hundred bucks? The blend sits around 35 to 40% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with the remainder Meunier. Dosage sits around 10 grams/litre, reasonably standard, or perhaps fractionally on the upper edge for these days, and around 20% of the blend is reserve wines. Deep yellow gold in colour, the nose has those lovely biscuity notes, along with peaches, figs, stonefruits and hints of hazelnuts. Richly flavoured and excellent length, this has fresh acidity and impressive length. Very attractive and an exciting cellaring prospect – if you think good Champagne can’t age and improve in the cellar, give it a shot. Lots to like here.

Established in 1975, this little known estate is one Heathcote’s oldest and along with Jasper Hill and Mt Ida was one of the pioneering vineyards of the region. Further plantings were made in 1996, the dry grown vines from both vineyards now well established with deep roots in the mineral rich Cambrian soil. Winemaking is undertaken by the talented Mark Hunter from Sanguine Estate and maturation takes place in French oak barriques for a period of 18 months. The 2023 vintage was produced predominately from the 50 year old vines. Most of the fruit from the younger vines lost to a nomad herd of kangaroos who developed a taste for the delicious Heathcote fruit in the days before harvest.

A rich, power packed Shiraz made from some of the oldest vines in Heathcote.

Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. There’s an approachability and evenness to this, with everything that’s good about cabernet from this region sealed within. Mulberries and blackberry compote, cassis and currants with fresh mint and bay leaves, nori and licorice with spicy, nutty oak all coming together well. Fuller-bodied with open-knit, textural tannins. The palate is supple. This is ready to enjoy now but will obviously garner more complexity in time. Drink by 2036.

A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec and Petit Verdot from a single dry-grown vineyard. Lovely cassis on the nose, with a herbal gum note, moss, cooling wet stone and pretty violets. Slate and polished aniseed notes create beautiful aromatic complexity. Juicy and perfectly weighted acidity with plush tannins and vibrant, layered fruit. Savoury spice with a succulent, moreish character that saturates the palate. So long on the finish, with great length and persistence. An excellent expression of Wilyabrup terroir with harmonious integration of all elements. Drink 2025-2038.

The 2022 Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon is super bright and seductive, with raspberry pip, hints of coffee grounds and aniseed, star anise and freshly turned earth and brine. It's a lovely wine, showing the pedigree of the season. The tannins are powdery and chewy and gorgeous. Really pleasurable. Sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2042.

This is the most stylish expression of cabernet, which has about 5% malbec, 5% petit verdot, 3% cab franc, and 2% merlot. So it's a classic Bordeaux blend, and shows elements of that sinewy, minerally tannin profile that you might expect. Nice dark fruits on the nose with a lift of bay leaf and a distinct oyster shell character. The palate has good medium-bodied flesh supported by those fine sinewy tannins and integrated oak. It's a classically defined cabernet.

There’s a lot of terrible Moscato about, especially some of the gross sickly local examples, but when Moscato is good, it’s very much a refreshing treat.
Juicy white peach, mint, perfume. There’s a tickle of fine bubbles, acidity balances sweetness, and that tussle between those two things is the hallmark of good Moscato. There’s a feathering of grip and the finish is juicy and long. Bloody yum. This is a banger. Drink 2026-2027.

Two old-vine plantings of shiraz, open fermented, finishing in barrel, both French and American, an undisclosed though not intrusive portion new. There’s an old-vine gravitas here, a hard-won intensity, borne from vine roots digging deep over decades, suffusing the fruit with deeply moody dark-fruited intensity. There’s no excess, just depth and intensity, with spice notes, coffee, cacao, a tasteful nip of Captain Morgan and some woody herbs detailing. A milk chocolate feel to the palate, supple, slightly creamy, the tannins fine and the length sustained. Drink by 2032.

A marriage of fluorescent red berries, redcurrants, raspberries and black cherries. Some soft bay leaf and tobacco pouch. Acidity is measured for flow and even grace across the palate, granular tannins but carry the intensity right to the finish. Zippy and racy with a tight line of crisp acidity.

Since it’s establishment in 2009, winemaker John Hughes has in a very short period of time established RieslingFreak as one of the country's preeminent producers of the variety. Wine critic Mike Bennie describing it as ‘the definitive Riesling project in Australia.’
Brilliant water like core with a faint greenish tinge to the surrounding edges. "Mortlach is always a good choice. This one also offers excellent value for money." - whiskybase.com

Our last Mortlach 100 Proof was a bright gold coloured whisky and showed unusual restraint in the sherried department. Edition #73 is set to take you to the opposite extreme. Deep, dark and brooding, first-fill oloroso butts bring heavy sherry sweetness to a big spirit backbone. Some found Mortlach's 'meatiness' secondary to the sherry. Others found it emerging just at the finish. This was selling for around $160 in Australia. Via direct importing, we can offer the same whisky for significantly less. Strong recommendations from multiple sources include Dramface.com who declared it "Very good indeed... Not the Mortlach I hoped to find, but one I came to really love". 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... This isn’t the old-school, savoury, sulphuric Mortlach that I was hoping it might be, but it’s still very good. It definitely needs a bit of water, but once you get past that slightly vinegary note and tame a little of the sourness, it’s really very engaging.  As I write this it’s June and I’m still getting a lot of enjoyment from this bottle. Give me a cold, Autumnal evening and a nice log fire, and I’m pretty sure that this would be the perfect companion. If, like me, you’re a Mortlach fan, then this one is definitely worth your time and money. - dramface.com

"Mortlach is always a good choice. This one also offers excellent value for money. Nicely meaty, oily, and with the typical Mortlach gooseberry notes, plus a delicate sherry influence – not too much, as the color might suggest. A delight on its own". - whiskybase.com

I've always been a fan of the ***** shiraz. It's a big, bold style. 'Classic' Barossa, I guess you'd call it. It's familiar and comforting, not overblown in any way, and it always travels across the palate with grace and style. Pure blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruits, a fair dose of cedar and oak spice, roasting meats, a wisp of crushed herbs, fruit-and-nut chocolate, licorice, violets, earth and olive tapenade. Full bodied yet detailed. A rich cassis fruit flow, with fine-grained, silty tannins and plenty of cellaring potential. A cracking vintage this one, too. Drink by 2046.

So here it is, Barossa Shiraz from a great year, strutting all that you expect from both the region and the varietal combination. Loads of plummy dark fruits, plus chocolate, a little cocoa, and just a faint dried sage bush-like herby character. The palate is rich and delicious with firmish tannins in support and plenty of oak to add that final flourish. Established in 1978 Stonier Vineyards was one of the pioneers on the Mornington Peninsula and has recently returned to being locally owned and run after a period of corporate ownership. The fruit for Stonier Pinot Noir is derived from a selection of estate and leased vineyards, the majority of which sit on the red volcanic basalt between Merricks and Red Hill. The high elevation (200m+) Red Hill vineyards are the primary component of this wine which provides the lovely lifted red fruit profile.
2025 is considered to be one the great vintages of the last 25 years for Mornington Peninsula.

Powerful, flavour packed and expansive – this is one moreish Mornington Pinot Noir.

Showing impressive intensity, the nose features fragrant dark cherry, strawberry and anise scents which are complimented by violet, bramble, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich, supple and expansive, the gorgeous palate is detailed with dark cherry, strawberry and more subtle anise flavours. All the 2025 releases from Stonier have been reviewed to The Winefront site – well worth checking out – but I thought I’d include a note on this ‘standard’ release because it’s a contender for the Best Value Pinot Noir of 2026. I appreciate that $45 isn’t the usual price that you’d associate with value but in comparative Pinot Noir terms it qualifies.
I’ve been tasting and drinking Stonier Pinot Noir for a very long time – 30 years-ish – and this is the best standard Stonier Pinot Noir that I can recall. It’s a pearler. Its quality is so high because it’s more complex than the latest round capital gains tax changes, is beautifully interwoven with tannin, is juiced up with alarmingly more-ish fruit flavour and from start to finish, more to the point, it mounts the most coherent and articulate arguments int its favour. It tastes brilliant, it tastes interesting, it feels the goods and it lingers. I couldn’t be more on board.

This wine, perhaps more than any other in the range, proves that Stonier is in the best of winemaking and wine growing hands.
Buy this, cellar it, drink it. I’ve loved this ‘standard’ Stonier Pinot Noir for decades but I dare say that this is the best release that I’ve tried. Sheesh. It’s complex, it’s cohesive, it’s balanced and it feels authentic, the latter both to its variety and to its region. Mostly and ultimately though it’s more-ish. It’s cherried and strawberried and plummy and sweet spiced, with soil or undergrowth notes interwoven. Tannin profile is top notch, and the balance between juicy drinkability and tension is so perfectly judged. Last year’s releases gave an excellent insight into the uptick of Stonier but this year’s releases take things up again. Drink 2026-2032+

Riesling was the first white variety planted at Clonakilla, back in 1971 by John Kirk, the father of Tim Kirk, the current winemaker. It is still going strong. The grapes are handpicked and whole bunch pressed, before racking for fermentation. Tim has indicated that the fruit came in, in near perfect condition, despite it being a rather challenging year. Whilst some winemakers are a little like politicians, Tim is definitely one you can believe, even if he is based in Canberra. If he claims it was perfect, then perfect it was. This is a magic Riesling, surely one of his best. I have long been a big fan of the Clonakilla Rieslings, but this one surely exceeds all expectations. A wine of the palest lemon/lime hue, the nose is delightfully full of citrus and spices, especially an appealing lime sherbet note. This is supported by hints of river pebbles, honeysuckle, wet slate and ginger. The wine is clean, inevitably youthful, delightfully fresh with bright acidity and great length. Strike that and make it incredible length. This Riesling can sit with the best made anywhere in Australia. A twenty-year proposition. Drink 2026-2046.

Here we have a bit of a novelty from Speyside. Located in the far south of the region, Braeval shares the honour of being the joint highest distillery in Scotland, along with Dalwhinnie. Currently owned by Chivas Brothers, (who kick-started production in 2008), Braeval has always been reserved for blenders. The house style is unpeated, light and floral. According to the label notes, this edition offer flavours of zesty marmalade on buttery brioche with porridge oats and golden syrup. The finish lingers long with more of that fresh vanilla quality alongside caramel and gentle spice. 134 bottles were filled from a single refill barrel. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A lesser-known Speysider, Allt-A-Bhainne is an unpretentious, straightforward malt that's typically light and fresh with sweet floral notes. The distillery is working again since having been mothballed in 2002. It's a very young operation, opened only in 1975, serving primarily to supply whisky for the Chivas Regal blends. Despite its significant output, it's designed to be run by a single person.

There's never been an official distillery bottling from Allt-A-Bhainne, although one may come across the occasional independent. This one's drawn from a single re-fill barrel, after which it was bottled by Douglas Laing for the Clan Denny series. The label notes describe flavours of coconut cream and buttery oak biscuits followed by a moreish caramel sweetness with hints of polished oak. The outturn was all of 89 bottles! 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Delivers a classic Coonawarra Cabernet experience for a miserly sum.

Deep midnight black heart with a dark red hue. Rising from the glass are pronounced blackcurrant and mulberry scents which intermingle with some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and bay leaf notes. Rich, fleshy blackcurrant and liquorice fruits are delivered with admirable concentration across the mid weighted palate. Elements of mulberry, earth, tobacco and subtle bay leaf lend further nuance. Sturdy, fine grained tannins with a long, deeply fruited yet eloquent finish.

(Tasted December 2020). Aged for 11 months in used French puncheons. Just like its sibling (***), *** represents excellent value. There are cassis and blackcurrants with baking spices in the mix, but this is very savoury and even a little stern at present. In time the raspy tannins will melt into the medium-bodied palate. Rich and beautifully fleshed with a long, juicy yet savoury finish.

Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Rich and generous, bordering on opulent, in its flow, the mid weighted palate is filled with liquorice, black cherry and dark plum fruits. The fruit for this gem comes from four vineyards in the Hilltops region of New South Wales. After destemming and fermentation in open fermenters, the wine is racked to French oak puncheons and barriques, around 10% of them new, to mature for the next year. Dark garnet/red, the nose offers a range of aromas including dried herbs, red fruits, spices with a flick of white pepper, kirsch and aniseed. The palate moves more to raspberries and charcuterie. A wine of elegance and good focus with bright energy, this is quite a mouthwatering style. One glass simply demands another. Bright acidity runs the length, and freshness is an absolute highlight here. It is a wine of serious length and undoubtedly a ten year proposition. Hard to think of too many wines which would top it for value. Drink 2026-2036.

    Zesty, lip-smacking Soave.

Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Pear, lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs stream out of the glass trailed by some wet stone notes. Zesty lime, pear and green apple fruits make a lip-smacking entrance onto the palate. Mediterranean herb accents and a saline like minerality linger across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long scrumptious finish.

Intensely flavoured and texturally mouth filling with crisp, refreshing acidity and a long saline laced finish.

Since 1946 Gianluigi Bergaglio has grown Cortese on his 18-hectare estates near the town of Gavi. Cortese the grape is indigenous to this area and has not scientifically been linked to any other grape variety in the world, it is truly regional. Most of the 3000 hectares of the grape are planted around the town of Gavi in the southeast of Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, along the Lemme river. Vines are planted on hills with calcareous soil composition like most parts of Piedmont.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Filling the nostrils are aromas of pineapple, guava, pear and green apple which are complimented by some fresh herb and slatey mineral notes. Rich, dense and bold, this is a classic example of Heathcote Shiraz.

Rich, plush and concentrated, the palate is greeted by a dense wave of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. An exceptional vintage shows Heathcote shiraz at its best. As ever, Eagles Blood delivers a wine with a strong sense of place, of Aussie bush scents, acacia, briar, bracken and mineral red earthiness against a core of sturdy, ripe black fruits, chocolate and spice. In the fuller-bodied style, but it carries it well with tannins laid out evenly. There is the kind of balance in place that encourages drinking now – which I would do – but with the potential for further ageing – which I would also do. Drink by 2039.

Kalleske’s Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800’s. It’s certified both organic and biodynamic with maturation taking place in a mix of 30% new American and French oak hogsheads for a period of 19 months.

Profoundly deep, rich and immense in it’s size with a thick, mouth coating texture.

PLEASE NOTE: Glenfarclas whiskies are known for occasionally having cork issues. Because natural cork is used, it’s not uncommon for the cork to break when opening. This doesn’t indicate any fault with the whisky - it remains perfectly good to enjoy.

An elevated strength and zero chill filtration set this apart from most of Glenfarclas' core expressions. There are many positive comments on whiskybase.com praising this as a welcome addition that delivers a decent volume of sherry matched with distillery character. In short, a great introduction to the distillery's DNA, plus a bit more besides. Otherwise only available via Travel Retail. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

"A very successful Glenfarclas bottling with the typical sherry profile. The 16 years bring a lovely spiciness from the wood that harmonizes beautifully with the sherry aromas. It's not an overpowering sherry bomb, but rather shines with a very well-balanced sherry profile. After some weaker bottlings in recent years, Glenfarclas seems to be getting back on track with the Travel Retail Exclusive 11 and 16 year old releases. Both are highly recommended and offer wonderfully balanced sherry malts." - whiskybase.com

"A remarkably successful sherry whisky that impresses with its abundance of fruit, sweetness, and depth. The evolution in the glass is particularly captivating: from slightly tart red berries to dark fruits and cherries. The combination of berries, chocolate, leather, and the subtle espresso notes in the finish is perfectly harmonious and leaves you wanting another sip. For a whisky at 46% ABV, it delivers a surprising amount of intensity and exhibits precisely the qualities that fans of sherry cask maturation appreciate in a good Glenfarclas." - whiskybase.com

"Now that is what I call a whisky." 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

Readers may remember the high standard set by the original 16-year-old Glenlivet Nadurra, discontinued around 2015 due to shortages of older maturing stock. It was replaced by a range of no-age-statement (NAS) cask-strength bottlings including Oloroso Matured, Peated Cask Finish and this First Fill American Oak expression. Thankfully, the follow-ons maintained the quality of the original. In particular, if you enjoyed Nadurra 16YO, you can be pretty confident here as the wood regime is the same. Matured entirely in x-Bourbon casks, 'First Fill' typifies the distillery's style offering up deep scents of poached pear and ripe green apple over beeswax and vanilla. The orchard fruit theme continues in the second pass adding milk chocolate, orange cake, light pepper and clove. A precocious sniff! The palate builds with flavours of honey, vanilla and tea biscuits; quite spicy and concentrated, thinning out momentarily before a stewed pear sweetness almost breaks through the spicy oak, carrying the aftertaste in rebounds. A little water helps it along but it's fine to drink uncut. As one of the more engaging Glenlivets of recent years, this release serves as a reminder that NAS whisky isn't necessarily retrograde. 59.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch FF0117 tasted.

The Hennings vineyard is part of a family owned farm that was established by Henning Rathjen in 1858. He was the first to plant vines in the Heathcote region producing wines up until the 1920’s when the vineyard was eventually abandoned. It wasn’t until 1998 when Daryl Rathjen decided to replant the 30 acre vineyard on the same original site that production started again. Winemakers David and Liam Anderson from Wild Duck Creek are in charge of winemaking so its no surprise that the resultant wines are hefty, super rich examples of Heathcote Shiraz. Maturation took place in French oak, 15% of which was new for a period of 18 months.

Crafted for the curious whisky lover, the Old Particular Wine Cask Collection is a celebration of single cask malts elevated by wine cask finishes (typically sweet, fortified, or red wine wood). This comes off four blocks in the Barossa, and is made in years that are considered worthy. In this case, it’s very worthy. Deep purply-red colors. Expect a casual dram offering notes of dried fruits, warm malt and gentle spices, followed by a crisp, dry finish. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews...The Glenfarclas 11 is a very successful, well-rounded whisky. Naturally sherry-forward, but certainly not overpowering. It's a very drinkable (thankfully it's a 1-liter bottle!), delicious, smooth whisky. Well-rounded, not too sweet, and not too spicy. Great for simply enjoying with friends. Essentially, it's what the 12-year-old should be, but sadly hasn't been lately. - whiskybase.com

"...This is an impressive whisky from Glenfarclas. They are known for their use of ex-sherry casks, ex-Oloroso in particular, but this is not a massive ‘sherry monster’ or ‘sherry bomb’ of a whisky. Instead it is superbly well balanced and multi dimensional. This makes is a nice Autumnal whisky with the warming spices on top of the sweet and fruity characteristics. This 11 Years Old expression offers great value for money, especially given the quality of the liquid and reputation of Glenfarclas. Definitely one to consider picking up when next travelling through an airport. That’s what we did …" - whiskyforeveryone.com

Searching deep within the precious family vaults, Fred Laing himself has personally selected this superlative Macallan single Cask, said to be at its peak of perfection. Keen eyes will notice the label reference to his personal curation (part of his exclusive 'Chairman's Choice' Collection), setting it apart from the rest of Laing's 'Black' XOP range. This should be about as good as it gets. 246 bottles were filled from a refill barrel at 50.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.

This Speyside underdog operated between 1898 and 1902, and then again from 1965 until 2002 when it was finally dismantled. A few indie bottlings were trickling out but new releases have completely dried up in recent years. The flavour profile for this limited edition from Laing's sounds intriguing. 281 bottles were drawn from a refill hogshead at 49.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Given Tormore has mostly been a workhorse for blends, official bottlings didn't exist until 2004. Subsequent releases under Pernod Ricard never gained wide recognition, and the void has only been filled by independent offerings. In June 2022, Elixir Distillers (the company behind a slew of UK brands such as Port Askaig and Elements of Islay) took over Tormore distillery from the corporate giant. New bottlings have followed; however, this much-overlooked distillery will still be a novelty for most. Douglas Laing filled 276 bottles from single refill hogshead DL17247 at 41.6% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... The nose is attractively round and full of buttered burnt toast and milky cereal hues. On the palate detect butterscotch, malt, appealing spices and gentle lemon citric tones. That big malt impact is still therre on the finish, plus bourbon based vanilla flavours.

"A new kind of old Springbank—abstract, simple, magnificent." - whiskyfun.com

When it comes to pricing, the trajectory of regular Springbanks is heading further and further north, which puts the value for luxury bottlings like this into perspective. Apart from the extreme age statement and the stellar quality, collectors should note the tiny outturn of this particular release - just 176 bottles from a single refill hogshead. As for the style, says one fortunate taster: "It's sublime. No need to say more. We've reached a level where we can't use words and all we can hope for is another half-centilitre." Be quick. Seldom do you find a Springa' that breaches the three decade mark at this sort of price. 46.3% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Colour: light gold. Nose: the house style when there’s no sherry. Direct, slightly fermentary, with raw wool, modelling clay, damp chalk, and slate… You get the idea—it’s rather mineral, simple, almost youthful, yet to me, of an almost Caravaggesque beauty. Nothing is missing, and nothing is superfluous. Mouth: citrus and pepper, plus seawater and apple juice. That’s it—it’s little, and it’s a lot. A new kind of old Springbank—abstract, simple, magnificent. Isn’t complexity overrated in whisky? (Of course not—pure b*ll*cks.) Finish: not the longest, but always ultra-precise, with liquorice, mint, lemon, ashes, and pepper. Comments: it’s great fun tasting these vintages, which we first tried when they were ten years old, back when their ‘flaws’ hadn’t yet become their strengths. Who said time isn’t a major ingredient in whisky—aside from accountants? 92 points - whiskyfun.com

"Buttered country bread toasts, with semi-salted butter, gourmet cereals with a few raisins, ash vanilla with a pinch of icing sugar, delicately salted shortbread biscuits, melting caramel, nougatine, hint of mineral peat, almost chiseled, coconut, banana. Dry hay. On the palate, candied lemon, creamy flan, pulpy white fruits, with a slight sweetness. Maple syrup, pine needles, very light spices. Nutmeg coated with a sweet smoke. Very long, deep, ample finish, with maritime waves, foam and kelp, mineral, quartz and slate, cereal, wheat germ and oats, and farmhouse. Warm sand, a zest of clementine. Hazelnut. It's sublime. No need to say more. We've reached a level where we can't use words and all we can hope for is another half-centilitre." - whiskybase.com

Douglas Laing have been well known as a bottler of blends, and since the mid 1990s, for two well-established independent brands under the very successful Provenance and Old Particular labels. About a decade ago, they expanded into a range of seriously good Blended Malts. It started with the instantly recognisable 100% Islay edition named Big Peat. That paved the way for what was to become their 'Remarkable Regional Malts’ series – vatting different single malt whiskies from each official whisky region and the islands. The collection doesn't cut corners, sourcing from some of Scotland's most respected names, including Macallan, Ardbeg and Caol Ila. The family's passion for these creations is partly explained by Cara Laing's personal affection for blended malts. “In a way, single casks are easy,” she says. “They’re either ready to be bottled or they’re not. Blended malts take more effort.” She adds, "...unfortunately, many people turn up their nose at blended malts, simply because some have a negative connotation with the word blend."

Since the launch of Big Peat in 2009 a slew of bottlings have followed. You can now take your tastebuds on a tour around Scotland with a series of playfully presented drams that include Scallywag from Speyside, Rock Oyster (now Rock Island) from the islands, The Epicurean from the Lowlands, The Gauldrons from Campbeltown and Timorous Beastie from the Highlands. For the first time, they're all represented in miniature format in one wonderful gift pack! Six 50ml bottles at an average of around 46% ABV are featured, with no coloring or chill-filtration, each embodying the overarching characteristics of the region they're sourced from. A more detailed breakdown of what the pack includes is as follows:

The Epicurean (Lowlands) Crunched sugar, mixed spices, thyme, peaches and hard candy.
Timorous Beastie (Highlands) Sweet, light barley and spicy honeyed tones with crunchy meringue on the finish.
Scallywag (Speyside) Layer on layer of Sherry heritage - sweet stewed fruit, chocolate and cinnamon.
Rock Island (The Islands) Brimful of maritime character, with sea-salt, pepper, gentle smoke and sweet honey.
Big Peat (Islay) Big, leathery, ashy, coal-dusty marriage of Single Malts from Islay, with a sweet side, too.
The Gauldrons (Campbeltown) Salty & maritime with a spicy finish.

Rich, power packed and super juicy with a plump, bouncy feel.

Made from a collection of gnarled old bush vines with an average vine age of 75 years, 75% of the blend spent 10 months in seasoned French oak puncheons and hogsheads.
Semi translucent vibrant ruby red colour with black shaded edges and a light crimson red hue. Fragrant red raspberry and red liquorice scents sail through the nostrils with complimenting notes of cherry, scorched earth and pepper also evident. Rich, power packed and super juicy, the mid weighted palate is engulfed with red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits. Lending further nuance are vanillin confectionary, earth and pepper elements. Possessing vibrant acidity and velvety tannins, it has a plump, bouncy feel finishing long, fresh and succulent.

Built to secure a reliable supply of grain whisky for William Grant & Sons blends, when it opened in 1963, Girvan was the largest grain distillery in the world. It remains one of the most important sites in the William Grant portfolio. Like other grain producers, compared to single malt distilleries, Girvan flys under the radar. It's usually bottled by independents, and even then rarely. However in 2013, Grants took the unusual step of marketing Girvan under its own label. The price for the official 25 year old is now around $500 (and it's only 42% ABV). Enter Douglas Laing. As part of the Old Particular single cask range, we're able to offer two double-decaders at direct import prices. This edition from cask DL16964 consists of 282 bottles charged from single refill hogshead. Besides the impressive price/age ratio, the fact that these are high strength and non-chill filtered means you get even more bang for your buck! 51.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Round, rich and initially full of syrup, ahead of a truly sweet cereal based character. Palate: Catch candy floss, white and Demerara sugars, with a later strong vanilla toffee flavour. Finish: Barley sugar flavours apparent, beyond which gristy cereals and spices appear.

From arguably the Pyrenees most iconic producer, this beautifully aged Shiraz is a serious value at less than half it’s normal price. Established in 1973, it sits at highest elevation and is the most remote of the Pyrenees district vineyards. Maturation took place in French oak barriques for a period of 20 months.

An iconic back vintage Pyrenees Shiraz at less than half price!

Magnificent depth of colour featuring a dense inky black core and a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are intense aromatics of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth, dried herb and peppered fennel notes. Plush and concentrated, rich blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruits are still remarkably fresh and pure in spite of it’s bottle age. Lurking beneath are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, dried herbs, scorched earth, subtle fennel and blackpepper. Polished yet underlyingly muscular tannins and vibrant acidity provide great structure for further cellaring. Finishes long and moreish.

An assemblage of the best blocks from the ****** original vineyard. Hand picked, vinified separately with some batches having 25% whole bunches included in ferment. Matured 20 months in French oak (30% new), followed by barrel selection and blending. Strikes a generous pose and colour. There's some pretty smart and attractive oak that is a big part of this wine's appeal. It contributes added gravitas, with wide-ranging influences from prominent spice to a toasty, smoky, mocha overlay. The ripe blackberry, plum, aniseed fruit loves it. Mouth-coating and long. From a producer renown for their blockbuster Barossa reds, this richly flavoured Shiraz has been made in an Amarone style whereby the grapes are rack dried to concentrate the fruit. The resulting wine was then matured in French oak for a period of 18 months. At over 50% off it delivers great value for those who like their Shiraz on the bigger side of town.

Rich, dense and concentrated with an opulent yet chewy mouth feel and power packed finish.

Magnificent colour density featuring a super saturated inky black heart along with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Peppery black cherry, black plum and liquorice scents infiltrate the olfactory senses followed by some fennel, scorched earth and spicy vanillin cedar notes. A strikingly modern Barossa Shiraz that bursts from the glass with freshness, clarity and energy. Blueberry and dark berry fruits lead the way, vibrant and pure, before subtle notes of espresso bean, spice and crushed mineral detail add depth and sophistication.

Sumac and strawberries, paprika and lingonberries. Red fruit is taut and crunches with bursting acidity. A small portion of new oak adds some floral spice, potpourri and rose spray. Some Jarrah wood, cedar and red clay earth tones add further dimension. I find it so hard to fault the Yering Station line for its fruit purity, presence and price point. Ben Jeanneret calls this curiously named wine 'Rank & File'. It's what Shiraz represents to him - the heart and soul of the Australian wine industry. Sourced from some of the best low yielding, old vine vineyards in Clare, the fruit for this wine was matured in a mixture of French and American oak for a period of 17-23 months. Year in year out this is one of our best selling Shiraz, the powerful rich black fruits and opulent feel make it irresistible drinking.

Not for the faint of heart, this is a high octane, super dense Clare Shiraz.

Ultra dense inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue. "Kilkerran always delivers a superb bang for buck and one of the most solid distillates out there." - whiskybase.com

Now seen as the value for money alternative to Springbank, Kilkerran 8YO has quickly gained a reputation as a punchy, elemental Campbeltown bomb. Previous batches included full maturations in Bourbon, Port and Sherry. Batch No.12 comes 100% matured in Bourbon barrels, resulting in a creamier mouthfeel with hints of tropical fruit and low to medium peat. A few drops of water are recommended, while some tasters note that the rough edges common to young Kilkerrans blow off after the bottle has been opened for a few weeks. No details on the numbers released, but as usual, stocks are allocated in Australia. 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... A top-class whisky that will certainly be among the highlights of this year's ex-bourbon cask maturation. In my opinion, a few drops of water are very good for the whisky right from the start....This Kilkerran is also a very successful single malt in the mouth, even if the taste cannot keep up with the brutally strong nose. The dominant flavors for me are pear and banana. With a little more water, the papaya flavor also reappears. Additionally, there's a hard-to-describe aroma that I associate with Kilkerran. Furthermore, the alcohol becomes somewhat more noticeable again, even with just a few drops of water. A few more drops, however, make it disappear, creating space for the sweet flavors. - whiskybase.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Notes of butterscotch and custard creams lead, with apple butter and white miso. Cream sponge and poached pear sweetness follows. Palate: There is a creaminess on the palate in notes of shortbread crust and smooth caramel chocolate, with notes of gooseberries, white grapes, cigar box smoke and sandalwood developing. Finish: Hints of green peppercorn and honeydew melon emerge in the finish, alongside an ashy note.
