2025 Soumah Hexham Vineyard Chardonnay
Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
Founded by hospitality veteran Brett Butcher, Soumah Estate is a highly acclaimed, family-owned Australian winery located in the prestigious Warramate foothills of Gruyere, Yarra Valley. Their outstanding Hexham vineyard Chardonnay was barrel fermented with 100% wild yeast then matured on lees in French barriques and puncheons for a period of 8 months.
A concentrated and mouth filling Yarra Valley Chardonnay with a long, generously rounded conclusion.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Elevated nectarine, white peach and pear aromas drift through the nostrils followed by whiffs of cashew, faint dried honey, nougat and spice. Rich, creamy textured flavours of white peach, pear and dried honey caress what is a concentrated and mouth filling palate. Citrusy nougat, cashew and spice characters ensue. Long, generously rounded conclusion.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
Alc. 13.3%
Other Reviews….
A bright green gold. A bouquet of white nectarine, grilled hazelnuts, orange zest and a hint of oyster shell. Medium bodied, with good concentration. This will benefit from six to 12 months in bottle, then develop well over the next four to six years. Drink by 2032.

Philip Rich - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
If Soumah’s Ngumby Vineyard Chardonnay is the friendly one, its sibling – Hexham Vineyard Chardonnay – is the more linear and finer edged of the two, and still very much evolving. This is the keeper, the one to put aside for a while. The palate is svelte, lean and almost piercing with a strong acid presence driving tangy green apple, pear, grapefruit, lemon, white peach and honeysuckle. A fine, persistent line of acidity – zesty, fresh and bright – runs the full distance of the wine. An evolving texture is emerging before a mouth-watering grapefruit finish. All the elements are here for a Yarra Valley Chardonnay of some class. Just give it time. Drink 2026-2036.

A vibrant bouquet brimming with mango, ripe peach, baking spice, and candied lemon leads harmoniously into a palate rich with plump orchard fruits. Crisp white grapefruit and crushed rock minerality balance the juicy, mouth-coating texture, finishing fresh and lifted with bright citrus zest.
