Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2050.

So deep, it feels like it’s pulling you in the direction of the center of the earth! Yet, another side of the wine seems to float above the world. Radically mineral finish that leaves you in no doubt about this great dry riesling’s future! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. Saline and finessed on the palate, this is a tightly structured pure and tensioned dry Riesling with lots of salinity but also ripe and fleshy fruit with fine tannins, both representing a warm, ripe vintage. It is very long and saline on the pure and youthful finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

If you’re a Barolo fan, then here’s a dry riesling for you! The first impression is silky and suave, but then the massive structure - including tons of fine tannin - asserts itself. The mirabelle and citrus notes just emerging from this deep cave, but the promise is there! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

Very bright and uplifting nose with delicate dried-flower aromas. Lots of depth and structure, but also very polished. The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

The Hallet family has been farming in Frankland River since 1971, starting with just one hectare each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Shiraz, and Malbec. Their 1200-hectare farm now hosts a sustainable vineyard and winery. This medium-dry Riesling, made from estate-grown fruit, was harvested early morning and fermented in stainless steel to retain its freshness. It offers aromas of citrus blossoms, mandarin zest, and Earl Grey tea, with flavors of lemon sorbet and vanilla tea biscuits—perfect for a spring picnic with cheese.

A lot of good riesling for the bucks. Scents of green apple, orange blossom, Meyer lemon and jasmine. Flavours limey and intense, a little juicy with a powdery, talc-like finish a little squeaky through its lingering drawl of lemony acidity. Very refreshing, with high drinkability. An acid hound's style, well done. Drink 2023 - 2035.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from two standout vineyards within the higher altitude and cooler sections of Eden Valley, the Cranes Range vineyard and Boehm Springs Road vineyard. This is a stunning Riesling and amazing value. It might sound like the proverbial broken record but anyone claiming to like Riesling who is not buying, drinking and cellaring these is not serious. Rob Diletti sees this as his flagship. The fruit is all from the estate, from six different blocks, aged between two and four decades. Only the first press of 450 litres/tonne is used here. A bright lemon hue, it is leaner and more elegant than the Skywalk, as expected, with notes of florals, oystershells, citrus including fresh lime and grapefruit pith, and a line of saline acidity. Focus and length are present. This is easily a ten to twenty year proposition. A wonderful Riesling and one which is must-have value. Drink 2024-2044.

The 2023 Skywalk Riesling leads with a distinctly talc-y, mineral nose. It has all the delicacy and ephemeral nuance in the mouth as well. Despite its levity, it is long and persistent through the finish, spooling off into the distance, with white tea, jasmine, green apple skins, scratched lime zest and what feels like a million other tiny characters ... like pulverized confetti. It's such a pleasure to drink this. It's pure and crystalline. Drink 2023-2033.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

It's young but digestible due to a rather moderate dose of sulfur. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Here's the opportunity to get a GG-type dry riesling for a friendly price. Excellent ripeness and finesse, the stone-fruit and grapefruit character beautifully intertwined with the minerally acidity. Long, herbal and wet-stone finish that tells the full Mosel riesling story. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Drink 2024-2032.

Gigantically fresh, with a whole garden of fresh herbs, plus white peach and a touch of white currant. Great energy whipping it down the road on the sleek and focused palate. There must be quite some natural grape sweetness in here, but the acidity it so vibrant that you barely feel it. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

It’s not easy to prise apart the complex fragrance of the Marienburg Spätlese, suffice to say that herbal and mineral elements shape the first impression, with fine floral and fruity notes demanding a little more olfactory application. The taste of crunchy apple and zesty citrus fruit gets the juices flowing, sweet lemony acidity prolongs the sensory stimulation. More classic than avant-garde, traditionalists deserve to be pleased too.

The 2024 Crawford River Strata Riesling showcases exceptional purity and definition, thanks to a dream vintage after the challenges of 2022/23. The season began with a dry spring, followed by timely rainfall in late November that ensured excellent flowering, particularly for Riesling. Short bursts of rain in late December and January set the stage for a dry six weeks, with an early harvest starting on March 21. Immaculate fruit with plentiful yields marked a standout year. Grapes were pressed directly to stainless steel for natural settling, followed by fermentation using a mix of wild and commercial yeasts. The wine matured on lees for several weeks before blending and bottling in September 2024. Derived from loam-rich soils over limestone, this Riesling is open, generous, and expressive in its youth.

The 2022 Riesling Roche Granitique was harvested in the Brand Grand Cru. The nose is clear as a bell with a touch of smoke and a strafe of citrus, but essentially shy. The palate is clear, bright and shining, with a spectrum of plum, from greengage via Reine Claude to Mirabelle. This is fresh, wonderfully stony, zesty, streamlined and pervasive. It's almost incisive, with just a touch of pepper on the finish and a lovely feel of grapefruit zest. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2024-2045.

Picked very late in the middle of September, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling offers a very deep, rich and intense, lime and limestone-driven bouquet that is very distinctive, rich, coolish, fresh and citric. Round and generous on the palate, this is a powerful, complex, very salivating Windsbuhl Riesling with the generosity and finesse (also in terms of acidity) of a grand cru and a lemon-fresh (and bitter) finish The wine is wide and juicy but also refined and fresh in all its minerality. It is also really rich and potent yet not at all driven by alcohol. The salinity is great here and intertwined with tannins and noble bitters. 4,400 bottles 12.46% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is a "bucolic" site, Humbrecht says, surrounded by forest and fields at altitude. It is on rocky Triassic limestone. The wine is slightly flinty and nutty on the nose. The palate is stony, too, taut and bright but flowing like clear spring water, cooling, with ever more citrus coming to the fore. Lemon zestiness and lovely brightness make this mouth-puckeringly tangy and deliciously thrilling. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

At once powerful and crystalline, this densely structured dry riesling is made for the long term. Extremely lemony and salty on the medium- to full-bodied palate, then so compact at the very long, driving finish, which is as pointed as a rapier. From a cooler, higher part of the grand cru that is facing east-southeast on rocky, reddish soils, the 2022 Hengst Wintzenheim Riesling opens with a very deep and coolish, intense and complex yet refined and elegant, terroir-driven bouquet with fresh apple puree and spicy and saline terroir notes. Full-bodied, very elegant and not all too rich, this is a dense and well balanced, less racy Riesling than the Clos Häuserer but with a long, intense and finely tannic finish. After 500 liters in the inaugural 2021 vintage, 3,200 bottles plus 170 magnums of the 2022 vintage were filled in January 2024. Gorgeously smoky flint precedes subtle floral and tangerine peel notes. The juiciness on the palate is all-encompassing, spreading wonderfully ripe, fresh Mirabelle fruit pervaded by fine, tangerine-like ripe citrus. The late-budding and rather late-ripening Clos Saint-Urbain, in the very south of Alsace, meets the very warm and solar 2022 vintage in this wine. What a thrilling setting this is, the more so since August and September brought rather cooler conditions to this cooler but, due to its dark soils and stony terraces in summer, nevertheless warm terroir of the Rangen. Indeed, the pH level was rather low in 2022 (at 3.1) and caused a dry and tense Riesling that doesn't at all show the characteristics of the Rieslings around Turckheim or elsewhere in Alsace.
The 2022 Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann Riesling opens very clear, pure, saline/iodine-inflected and stony on the flinty or smoky nose that represents the volcanic terroir of the clos perfectly or, as Olivier Humbrecht puts it, "Like a volcano fart."
Powerful, rich and saline on the palate, this is a dense, highly complex and energetic Saint-Urbain that somehow combines the purity of Dönnhoff's Hermannshöhle with the concentration, power and mineral complexity of the magnesium-rich Rangen. The finish is very intense, dense and aromatic as well as salivating, with a great mix of tannins, saline acidity and perfectly ripe (apricot) fruit.
Pressed slowly over 14 hours, this is one of the, if not THE, finest Rangen I have tasted from Zind-Humbrecht. (Loyal readers know that I had them all a year ago.) The 2022 comes in with 12.8% alcohol and is a wine to keep for many years. Drink 2028-2090.

The 2022 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru was harvested among the last Rieslings but had one of the lowest alcohols, with 12.8 %. A lovely sharp, green aromatic flavor, almost of watercress intensity, fresh, green and vigorous without being unripe, sets an initial aromatic highlight. The famed smokiness arrives on the second sniff, followed by gloriously aromatic tangerine. The palate is exquisitely precise, stony, taut and naked, but oh so nuanced with immense citrus brightness. This is a marvel glimmering with zestiness, citrus and such stony directness. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special, old parcel of 40-year-old Riesling within the stoniest, rockiest parts of the Permian sandstone of the Höllenpfad. A touch of yeast still plays with the ripe apricot fruit that shimmers shyly on the nose. A touch of white pepper later appears. The palate is stony yet rounded, structured by rockiness, with vivid glimmers of lemon oil, concentrated and increasingly zesty. It's pure yet has an increasingly insistent intensity, spraying with ripe lemon zestiness, white pepper and iron oxide. In the end, buffered lemon zest fills the mouth and mind. The 2022 is long, pure, zesty and insistent. (Bone-dry) Drink 2025-2050.

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs is from shale soils. The nose immediately expresses water on hot stone: warm and redolent of things that are not vegetal but mineral. The palate, however, holds Riesling's alluring citrus and stone fruit. The stony depth and dimension are undeniable, waiting patiently in the background to come to the fore. For now, citrus provides the top notes, but the heart and base note is of absolute stone: wet stone, shale that holds water, salt and centuries in its depth. The buffered citrus serenity is captivating. The finish is pure lemon linearity. (Bone-dry) Drink 2027-2050.

The restrained beauty of the peachiness in the nose is hard to describe, but easy to be overwhelmed by! On the compact palate this has staggering concentration yet still manages to be very light on its feet. The finish is blade-runner sharp, but the blade also flashes in the sun. Breathtaking drive and energy for the very warm and dry vintage. Then comes the remarkable wet-stone minerality and you can’t wait for the next sip. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Donnhoff make the best wines in the Nahe region, and some of the finest anywhere in the world. While it was Helmut Donnhoff that launched this estate to worldwide attention, winemaking duties are now managed by his talented son, Cornelius. There's a deep understanding of the grand wines and grand vineyards that's been handed down through the generations. And given the enormous technical proficiency Cornelius has demonstrated so far, Donnhoff is sure to be at the top of the vinous hierarchy for years to come.

The 2022 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs unites volcanic and shale soils. The site benefits from underground aquifers. The nose opens with a smoky slate note leading to the lemon- and lime-edged ripe stone fruit. The entire impression is one of yellow-fruited, ripe juiciness. This verges more and more into a yellow spectrum of citrus, perfumed and almost tender. The palate keeps this juicy fruit and dips it into tingling saltiness. Generosity, ripeness, saltiness and textural elements of pear peel and citrus zest unite into a very energetic, driven, almost urgent wine. The finish on the tongue is linear, but the aromas expand and take flight. (Bone-dry) Drink 2027-2050.

What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. What a nose of floral honey and dried flowers this fabulous Auslese has. In spite of the abundant richness what makes this stand out is the invigorating mineral freshness. And the further back the wine rolls over your palate the more amazing it becomes. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. It's fluid, smooth, serene, bright and laden with citrus and grapefruit spice on the long finish. Drink 2028-2050.

This starts very quietly and gently with a wafting cloud of floral aromas, but then your gaze is pulled into the base of this Gothic cathedral window, pulling you ever further upward until you are staring at the heavens. Supernatural energy and vitality, the wet stone character cascading over your palate at the super-long finish. Doesn’t want to stop! From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. From shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is very intense and aromatic on the dense and voluptuous nose. White peach, quince and red raspberry give an impression on the nose and the creamy, polished palate of both jellied and fresh fruits. An influx of lime serves for welcome, animating brightness, and the penetratingly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish is transparent to wet stone, setting up a shimmering fruit–mineral exchange.

2017 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Alte Reben Reserve Riesling Grosses Gewachs

Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. 2,450 bottles made. To be released in March 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

The nose of the 2017 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve takes some swirling but the Erdener Prälat comes alive with gentle hints of spiced orange: think subtle clove and Navel peel joined by notions of dried lemon rind. The texture is serene, smooth, utterly compact and filled with flavors of wax, lemon and slightly bitter, dried lemon zest that seems to be dissolved in subtle oiliness. Enormously dense nose of mango and papaya. Gigantic concentration and power for a German dry riesling this inhabits its own habitat on Planet Mosel. Brain-rattling intensity and energy at the moment, so we recommend decanting and using large glasses. Better still, give this a few more years in the bottle. Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
