Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

2019 Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (375ml)
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $940. 00 Bottle
    $11280.00 Dozen
    ABV: 6.5%
    Closure: Cork

Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim) soils; those deeply influence character and flavour of the wines. In order to reduce quantity and increase concentration, pruning is severe and in prolific years a green harvest is carried out in August. The vintage is picked much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches or single berries for Auslese qualities and above. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.

Based on single berries affected by an early botrytis, the raisin selection of the three-starred Auslese is the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Intense, very precise and spicy on the nose, the 2019 displays concentrated peach, almond and biscuit as well as lemon chutney, tea and ginger aromas. Silky, refined and highly delicate on the palate, this is a super precise and elegant TBA with great precision, finesse and salinity. The sweetness is certainly palatable but balanced by the clarity, precision, finesse and seamless texture of this crystalline and stimulating TBA that is extremely hard not to score 100 points. Maybe later, after some years of bottle aging? This wine has all the potential to become a legend. Bottled with roughly 400 grams of acidity, 6.5% alcohol and high acidity that was at 16 grams per liter in the must stage. 70 liters produced. Drink 2035 - 2100.

This is packed with dried-fruit aromas, ranging from pineapple to dates and figs, but it remains finely nuanced, rather than drifting off into opulence and density. With aeration, some ceps/porcini character appears, too. A super elegant wine, in spite of the enormous concentration and the sweetness that comes with it. The playful, filigree finish makes it really stand out in this category. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from fully-botrytized fruit picked at 210° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely exotic nose made of baked pineapple, coconut, mango, starfruit, almond cream, dried fruits, and honeyed elements. The wine is hugely sweet and unctuous on the palate, where a whiff of volatile acidity adds pep to the structure. The finish is long and alluring, but also marked by a touch of volatile acidity at this early stage. This superb TBA may eventually exceed our high ratings, especially as the volatile elements withdraw into the background. What an impressive effort! Drink 2029-2069.

From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Spätlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035 - 2070.

Plenty of exotic-fruit character from botrytis, but they haven’t made this refined Auslese loud, only more complex and tantalizing. Considerable concentration, but everything fits together so neatly that it comes off as restrained. Very complex, almost dry finish with a hint of vanilla pod. Delicious now, but so much aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese was made from partially botrytized fruit (1/3) picked at 115° Oechsle, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (125 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of elderflower, cassis, white peach, coconut, almond paste, fresh pineapple, and loads of citrusy and minty elements. The wine proves stunningly tactile and subtle on the palate, where delicately creamy fruits mingle with ripe yet gorgeously juicy acidity. The finish is all about bright exotic fruits, citrusy elements, and fine notes of cream. This gorgeous sweet wine may seem almost irresistible now, but it will gain from a decade of aging as the sweetness will have receded and given way to more nuances. Drink 2029-2049.

Sourced in all the sections of the cru and picked with 270° Oechsle and perfect botrytis, the yellow-golden 2018 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is deep, intense and refreshingly spicy and mineral on the compact and complex lime-zesty nose that reminds me of stewed apricots and sweet fig mustard with lemon zests. Incredibly rich, round and viscous but also finessed, fresh and vital on the palate, this is a highly elegant and perfectly balanced TBA with a long, intense and even stimulatingly vital finish. Compared to the filigreed, more crystalline Wehlener Sonnenuhr sibling, this is far more rich and oily textured, yet I can't avoid taking a large sip again and again, hedonist that I am! Thanks to the lower acidity, this is a smooth and sweet but still fine and delicate TBA that tastes fruity, fresh and highly digestible even at this early stage. All the components are already perfectly interwoven, and it's just a question of personal taste if you prefer to have this TBA sweet and smooth or matured and smooth. It's a marvelous wine in any case. It took a long ferment, until the end of June this year, which might have added a bit more complexity compared to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Tasted at the end of July and again in later August 2019 when the wine had already closed. Drink 2020 - 2090.

The 2018er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling TBA was harvested at 260° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. A whiff of volatile acidity quickly gives way to stunning elements of brown sugar, mango, candied pineapple, bitter lemon, raisin and cream. The wine is smooth yet stunningly multi-layered on the palate and leaves a gorgeously smooth yet precise feel of dried fruits and herbs in the long and juicy finish. The saturating sweetness in the finish still needs to integrate. It could then easily exceed our already very high expectations. Drink 2038-2068.

Sourced from the Brysky vineyards in Watervale, the 2021 vintage in Clare Valley was a mild one, allowing grapes to produce flavour ripeness prior to sugar ripeness. Production quality and yields were both high.

I am just loving these 2021 Clare Valley Rieslings, almost universally across the board. Any winemaker in the region who got this wrong should be condemned to make only warm climate, young vine Sauvignon Blanc for the rest of their natural life. Of course, some guys will inevitably do it better than others and it will come as no surprise that Dave O’Leary and Nick Walker are right at the top of the tree. And at $30 each, the value for both these Rieslings is almost criminal. A case for now, a case for the cellar.
This is green with pale gold throughout. Beautifully aromatic with spices, kaffir limes, hints of grapefruit, some minerals if you look hard enough and floral notes. A wine which is textbook and stunning. The palate is intense with great length and immaculate balance. It is perhaps a fraction more generous than the nose suggested, but nothing wrong with that. A Riesling which is cracking now and has a decade ahead of it. Drink 2022-2032.

A long, cool ferment over 2 weeks. This is awesome. Such density of flavour on the palate; mouth-coating intensity – it's almost painful. An absolute burster for the price. It'll drink beautifully right now, and it will still be going in a decade hence. The saline acidity leaves a quest for more in the mouth. Yes. Drink by 2031.

Yalumba’s Robert Hill Smith and Louisa Rose of Pewsey Vale & Heggies fame are intrinsically linked with Eden Valley Riesling. They had also long admired the potential of Tasmanian Riesling, so when the opportunity came up to work with a unique site of mature Riesling vines they jumped at it. In 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847. Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for Pewsey Vale Vineyard The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines.

    An imperial standard, of sorts!
Lemongrass, lime cordial, green apples. Huzzah! A touch of blackcurrant too? Perhaps. Attractive, varietal scents. Zingy and energetic to taste, compact, bracing with its core of steely, lemon juice acidity. Pent up, powerful, tight and very long. Bone dry. Excellent, classic expression. A Very Good Example. Mike Bennie – The Wine Front

Merle Pike is the mother of founders, Andrew and Neil Pike, matriarch of the family, and she would be bursting with pride at what Andrew and his team have achieved with these latest wines (Neil is now enjoying retirement and more likely seen with a golf club in hand than a wine glass). The chief winemaker now is Steve Baraglia. I met Mrs Pike on several occasions and a more gracious and lovely person would be hard to imagine. This wine is a fitting tribute (I always remember her saying that she didn’t know why they turned the sauvignon blanc grapes into wine – it was so much nicer as grape juice).
In the early days, Pikes released a Reserve Riesling but from early this century, it has been named, ‘The Merle’. It is made only from grapes grown on the estate and not produced every year. No 2007 for example. There are some truly brilliant Rieslings made in the Clare Valley, and this sits comfortably with any of them.
Even paler than the Traditionale, if that is possible, again we have the wonderful lifted aromas and pronounced flavours but this wine is more subtle, and even though very early days, there is more complexity. Terrific intensity here, incredible length and perfect structure. This wine offers more chalky soil notes (or at least, that is what it appears to do), along with those beautiful fresh lime characters. This is a stunning Riesling. The flavours explode across the palate. It has a life of twenty years ahead of it and many more, if you can be that patient.
If there is a better Riesling made in Australia this decade, I want to know about it. $55 might seem hefty for a local Riesling but in world terms, this is criminally cheap. This is so close to perfect, it deserves full points but I think it might just get even better and I need the wiggle room. Drink 2021-2045.

Pikes have long produced one of Clare Valley’s benchmark Rieslings, 2021 marking the 37th release, one which the Pikes family believe is one of the best from the last decade. Fruit is sourced predominately from the Estate’s Polish Hill River vineyard with the balance coming from growers located in the Watervale, Sevenhill, Leasingham and Mintaro districts. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel on lees for 3 months.

Bright lime and apple aromas here with a very fresh stance. Some white peach in the mix, too. The palate has a wealth of powerful lime and white-peach flavor with good depth and concentration. Impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Pure joy here! Lime zest, lemon pith, citrus blossom, brine, green apple skins and plenty of plush – almost ripe – stone fruit on the palate. This is generous and attractive, the acidity providing the tension and structure that it needs to elevate it into deliciousness. And delicious it is. Drink by 2031.

Pretty much the perfect vintage in Clare. It has resulted in some memorable wines and this classy value for money offering delivers with typical style and poise; crunchy lively lemon pith with a zesty citrus tang. The zingy acid carries the palate through to a fully extended finish leaving the mouth fresh and alive. Drink 2021-2031.

The Eden is produced from a single vineyard located in the heart of the Eden Valley region, established in1972. These old vines cling to the poorest soils on the Poonawatta property; the lean environment keeping the yields low, flavours concentrated and the fruit pure.

Boasting superb intensity and power, this is one for the Riesling purists.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Powerful lemon and lime aromatics soar out of the glass with talc, orange rind and subtle steely mineral notes ensuing. Mouth watering lemon and lime flavours display terrific intensity and drive backed by crunchy acidity. Dry, crisp finish with a very long scrumptious aftertaste. Superb.

It just has that little something extra this year. It's its usual floral self, underwritten by citrus juice and rind, a kind of chalkiness at play through the finish. Sheer intensity of flavour though, from the outset, is it really excels. Drink by 2025.

Royal Tokaji has been making the 5 puttonyos style since 1990. The Blue Label is made with at least 90% Furmint and a touch of Hárslevelű, with berries mainly sourced from the producer’s long-term contract growers. Golden in colour, the 2016 vintage bursts with dried apricot, peach, fig honey and Osmanthus, tinted with beeswax and pepper. After aging in second or third-use Hungarian oak casks for two years, the palate displays spiced apricot and honeyed fig flavours, with Furmint’s tell-tale acidity spine (9.9g/l), followed by a lip-smacking spicy finish. Sugar level sits at 158 g/l, much higher than the 120 g/l hallmark for 5 puttonyos.

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

Fermented in stainless steel, the 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is concentrated, deep and spicy on the nose that represents a perfectly selected botrytis. Rich and juicy-piquant on the palate, this is another highly finessed, elegant, rather lean and linear but balanced TBA with lingering salinity and mineral freshness thanks to the crystalline acidity from pure slate. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035 - 2100.

Mind-blowing concentration of dried exotic and stone fruit, but also stunning elegance, thanks to the brilliant acidity that also powers the super long finish. As delicious as this nobly sweet riesling masterpiece is, this really needs some years to reach its full, wide-screen glory. Very limited production. Better from 2022.

The 2019er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from 100% shrunken raisin fruit harvested at 194° Oechsle and fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (340 g/l). An initial whiff of volatile acidity quickly gives way to an aromatic, powerful, and concentrated scents of toffee, mango, raisin, mirabelle, grapefruit, passion fruit, apricot, plum, and spices. The wine develops huge concentration and depth on the palate, where a kick of acidity lifts the flavors. Despite the sweetness at play, the wine remains utterly balanced thanks to a playful acidity, its grip, and structure. The finish has an outstanding intensity. We would not be surprised if this stunning TBA will not eventually merit a perfect rating at maturity, once it will have revealed its finesse: It is THAT impressive! Drink 2034-2069.

The lime-green/citrus colored 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese * needs some time in the glass and should be opened some hours before being served. The wine is intense and concentrated yet very clear, fresh and spicy, even flinty or slatey on the complex nose that represents very fine botrytis aromas. Rich and juicy on the dense and finely structured palate, this is a luxurious, intense, round and textured BA with a higher portion of botrytis berries, which give a more luscious fruit texture yet without a loss of finesse and precision. The wine rewards one with some subtly exotic and gorgeously multi-layered flavors of fruit and honey on the palate, and leaves one with a delicately pure, juicy, and smooth sensation in the finish. The 2019er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit harvested early in a cool parcel of the vineyard at 93° Oechsle and fermented down in stainless steel to full fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (62 g/l). It offers an aromatic and ripe nose of yellow peach, pear, almond milk, candied tangerine, star anise, and a hint of banana flambéed. The wine proves sweet and ripe on the palate, where the juicy fruits give it more than a hint of Spätlese Schmelz. This smooth and juicy side carries over into the long and structured finish. Despite its richness and impressive levels of residual sugar, it proves crystal clear on the palate and rewards one with plenty of yellow honeyed fruits delivered with creamy and unctuous viscosity. This “one-star” BA has a “no-star” counterpart which I did not taste. “They were both very good and would have made an outstanding blend,” said Selbach, “but this lot exhibited a tick more finesse,” so he opted for separate bottlings, of which this one constituted 200 liters. White raisin and apple jelly are accompanied on the nose by prickle of lemon peel and radish, then pick up brown spices, honey, hazelnut paste and mango chutney on a viscous yet buoyant palate, leading to a vibrant, superbly multifaceted and ravishingly sustained finish. The finish is quite intense and very long. This BA is still very sweet and juicy, and will please lovers of rich and intense dessert wines. Drink 2028-2058.

Fresh and lively; a delicious array of lime, lemon and passionfruit opens proceedings on the palate and bouquet; steely acidity runs throughout, but doesn’t disturb the peace. Changes will emerge down the track, but don’t hesitate to drink it tonight.

Text book stuff. Pale green. Highly fragrant and lifted florals, lemon, lime and yeasty thiols. The palate is clean, fresh and tight, with citrus blossom, wet stones plus a texture like citrus pith that adds structure and interest to the long minerally finish. Good now, will improve further. Drink by 2027.

A terrific follow-up to the excellent 2020, this has piercingly fresh aromas of lemon and lime. Very floral, with some white peach, too. There’s such finesse and polished texture on the palate with grapefruit and lemon flavors wrapped in long and tight. Brilliant. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Formerly produced under the name Cuvée M, this wine is now called Grand Cru Mandelberg since the 2016 vintage. From one hectare of old vines over 60 years old, planted in a meagre limestone and pebbly, stony soil, as well as marl-limestone, with a south-southeast aspect. Mandelberg is one of only 3 Grands Crus of Alsace that are not adjacent to the sub-Vosges hills.

The Trimbachs have been producing this wine, from vines belonging to the convent in their Ribeauvillé home village, since 2009. The vineyard is 2.6 ha on the westernmost slope of this Grand Cru which has more limestone than the eastern part of the slope. (Total area of the Grand Cru, 8.5 ha, makes it one of the smallest in Alsace.) Some of the fruit is blended into Cuvée Frédéric Emile.
Greenish straw colour. Real excitement and lift in this. Far from heavy, this is ethereal. Racy with limestone/mineral influence. Drink 2019 - 2032.

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
