Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Gunderloch's 2020 Pettenthal GG is clear, bright, ripe and elegant yet still yeasty on the nose. Delicately juicy and round in the mouth, with fine, crystalline acidity structure and increasing intensity, this is a still-creamy yet persistently salty and tensioned Riesling with mouth-filling elegance and piquancy. Needs time. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2026 - 2040.

The ripe yet cool, peachy nose with a touch of exotic fruit gives this some real appeal. Then, on the rather generous and juicy palate there’s nice silkiness. Good, but not stunning length. Drink now. Screw cap.

Gunderloch's 2020 Hipping GG offers a very clear, bright and flinty, very elegant and slate-driven bouquet. The palate is tight, almost austere, enormously vital and very salty. This is a puristic and excitingly tensioned Riesling that deserves all our patience. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2045.

From the highest terraces in the most southern part of the Rothenberg that was designated as single vineyard until 1971, the 2020 Fenchelberg GG (Versteigerung) exhibits clear, deep, intense and concentrated yet elegant and coolish ripe fruit with a delicate spiciness on the nose. Dense, rich and juicy on the tightly woven palate, this is an intense, creamy-textured yet firmly structured, tensioned and promising Riesling with lots of salt and phenolic grip on the salty and powerful finish. This Fenchelberg was picked three weeks later than the Rothenberg GG. Due to the good water supply of the terraces of the Fenchelberg, it has always been the source for the world-famous Gunderloch noble sweet wines from the Rothenberg, such as Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). In the past few years, Johannes Hasselbach has gained a new perspective on the Fenchelberg and no longer harvests Auslesen here. Instead, he sees the site as another top vineyard just for dry Riesling. 320 bottles of the 2020 plus some large formats were filled. The wine has the power, tension and complexity of a Clos Saint Hune and is to be auctioned in November. 13.2% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted two times in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2026 - 2040.

Very cool and delicate with a wide spectrum of wild-herb and berry aromas. Sleek, precise and polished, this expands dramatically as it flows over the palate. The very long, spicy and mineral finish makes a serious statement. The first vintage of this wine, which comes from the highest-altitude section of the Rothenberg site of Nierstein. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Still rather closed this is a very concentrated wine with a beautiful balance that makes it taste less powerful than it really is. Major minerality at the very long, powerful finish. And all this at just 12.5% alcohol. Better from 2018.

An enchanting fragrance of summer meadow and orchard lifts the sensory spirits. Starts off sweet on the tongue with a ripe peachy note, but salty minerality and ample acidity take care of a well-balanced flavour. Generous and charming.

The citrus coloured 2016 Pettenthal Riesling GG has a clear, fresh/coolish and spicy bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling berries, slate and very discreet toast aromas. Full-bodied, round and creamypiquant on the palate, with lush and intense fruit, grainy tannins and some prominent oak that still has to be integrated (Hoesch 1200-liter Stückfass) this is a complex and mouth-filling Pettenthal that needs some years to develop and gain finesse.

The Rothenberg never fails to fascinate with its intriguing combination of grapefruit and spice. Plenty of patience with the harvest has been rewarded with a successful alliance of sweet citrus fruit including mandarin, juicy acidity and generous body, but the icing on the cake, as always, is that fine dusting of sweet spices which gets the palate tingling.

Fermented and aged 90% in oak (1,200-liter Stückfass), the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling GG has a clear, pure, deep and spicy bouquet that indicates great complexity and elegance. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure and very elegant Riesling with intense fruit, fine tannins and a long, intense finish. This Rothenberg is ripe, rich and lush but highly elegant, fresh and even finessed, with enormous salinity and a very long finish. Just 12.18% alcohol. This is a great Riesling that can age for 20, probably more, years. Great balance and complexity.

The tightrope walk and tension between fruit sweetness and acidity is delicious and fascinating in equal measure here, with characters of lime-edged apricot drops, lemon barley, dried honey, gingerbread and a dusting of soft spice and jasmine. Floral and head-spinningly pure on the palate, with nary a hint of cloying. A clean, precise bolt of pure botrytis fruit and spice on the finish lingers beautifully. Drink by 2028.

Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks of varying aspects, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2023 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and gradual flavour accumulation. This resulted in wines that possess a combination of high natural acidity, intense flavours and amazing power.

A super scrumptious Eden Valley Riesling that delivers mouth watering flavours with terrific drive and force.

Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green around the outskirts. Soaring out of the glass with fantastic intensity are aromatics of lime, citrus and orange rind followed by talc and chalky mineral like notes. A concentrate of mouth watering lime, citrus and orange rind fruits engulfs every corner of the mouth, overlaying a chalky talc, subtle wet steel and mineral back drop. Outstanding power and textural volume combine with crisp, cleansing acidity to lead into a dry, super scrumptious finish that’s exceptionally long.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water.
Through a straightforward approach to winemaking the Weber craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings, with well-integrated acidity from low yields and old vines, and bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2021er Niedermennig Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar (27 g/l). It offers a superb nose of mirabelle, herbs, white peach, and spices. The wine proves stunningly racy yet creamy on the palate and leaves a stunning feel of wet stone, herbs, anise, peach, and smoky elements. The finish is absolutely stunning and persistent. Drink 2029-2041.

Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, minerally Rieslings, distinctive to the area.

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is concentrated and fresh on the aromatic nose that is immediately present but also still reductive. Ripe stone fruit aromas intermingle with notes of crushed stones on a deep foundation of aromas from the soil and the fruit of old vines. On the palate, the 2021 is very fine but also intense, savory, saline and lush, leading to a long, intense and highly digestible finish with crunchy and cleansing slate features. Again, this is a fabulous Auslese from Prüm's iconic Sonnenuhr. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. Drink 2023 - 2060.

A surprisingly open nose defines the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, revealing an herbal savor that is reminiscent of moss, chervil, and carrot top, but just a hint. The palate is a gorgeously concentrated stream of ripe citrus, combining the aromatic intensity and ripeness of Amalfi lemon, the brightness of lime and the sweetness of sugared orange flesh. So direct, so precise, sweet but utterly balanced. Clear as a bell. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is from the smallest parcel the Prüms have, of just 0.6ha. Smoky, funky reduction can barely cloud the vivid citrus notes that break through - hints of tangerine are laced with lime and have beautiful crushed citrus foliage highlights. The sweetness on the palate amplifies the citrus purity, raising it to precision and high aromatic allure with bright acidity. This is incisive, vivid, invigorating and super-bright. Candied, spiced apple and overripe Persian melon dominate the Prum 2011 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese gold capsule, with honeyed impingement both aromatically and on the palate reinforcing the sense of relative opacity and rounded richness that the other Graachers in this year’s collection displayed. Here the sense of delicacy is nearly weightless; intriguing and enticing notes of liquid peony and lily enter the picture mid-palate after the wine takes on air; and for all of the botrytization in effect, there is a welcome retention of primary juiciness, spurring a lusciously long finish. Look for four decades or more of luxuriant satisfaction. Drink 2013 - 2053.

It would be no exaggeration to say Weingut Keller consistently produce the finest dry Rieslings in the world, a fact proven year after year since Klaus-Peter Keller took over the reins from his father in 2001. Along with his wife Julia, Klaus-Peter has continued to prioritise the quality of dry wine produced at the estate, and these are now some of the most sought after and collected wines on the planet.

The Riesling Trocken is such a perfect foray into Keller wines as it is always treated with the same meticulous care as their top releases. While 85% of Keller holdings are classified as 'Grand Cru', only 15% of their wines are labelled as such meaning a lot of premium fruit goes into the other releases including this fantastic wine. Jancis Robinson MW famously stated “If I had to choose one wine to show how great dry German Riesling can be I would choose a Keller Riesling.

Bottled last week. From vineyards all over Westhofen. A few tiny bubbles of CO2 from the fermentation, which, suggests Felix Keller, ‘Gives another dimension to the wine’. TA 9 g/l, RS 36 g/l.
Bright, intense stony citrus – lemon and lime – but also spring blossom and a hint of green apple. Marked citrus/lime purity with a delicate chalky limestone-induced texture. The stony sensation on the palate makes you think it is drier than it is. Salivating, great tension. Long and pure and stony, almost dry-tasting on the finish. Long, beautifully balanced. RR refers to Riesling from red soils – a half-hectare parcel within Kirchspiel that gives fruit that is a little more spicy than fruit that goes into Von der Fels. This parcel doesn't always ferment to complete dryness, as was the case in 2022, where it has also been blended with some top parcels from Abtserde and Morstein (usually destined for the GGs) that also didn't ferment totally dry. The resulting blend is just off-dry, with around 12 g/L of residual sugar, making this RR a serious example of feinherb.

Picked in conjunction with the corresponding Grosses Gewächs, this leads with scents of lemon, mirabelle and quince. The lusciously fruited, glossy but buoyant palate adds an animating tang of seedy white currant that sets up an invigorating and dynamic counterpoint with the wine’s sweetness and with the faintly jellied aspects of quince and mirabelle that feature alongside their fresh fruit expressions. A cooling inner-mouth hint of mint and a faint aura of white raisin add further contrast and allure. In keeping with themes familiar from this collection’s memorable Grosse Gewächse, the soaring, superbly sustained finish exhibits striking vibrancy as well as a palpable sense of chalky impingement rare in a sweet Spätlese. What’s more, for all of the richness and flirtation with overripeness on display here, there is infectious juiciness to refresh and encourage the next sip.

The top of the tree, Mort's riesling. It's a scintillating, intense and compact expression of the Clare classic style. Lots of energy here. Lime and lemon to the fore, with just-ripe green apple, fennel and a touch of blackcurrant between the bouquet and palate. Sleek in texture, very long and fine to finish. Finishes dry and crisp with a long mouth watering aftertaste.

Old, low-yielding vines. Light, bright green-quartz. The delicately perfumed bouquet takes some coaxing to reveal itself, the palate following without the need of persuasion. It is bright and lively, bringing citrus, Granny Smith apple, and slinky acidity from the first sip through to the lingering finish. Drink to 2040.

    James Halliday's Top 100 Wines of 2022

Riesling comes in many different forms – skin contact, fermentation in oak, wild ferment, etc, – but there is a classic style of Riesling that never goes out of date. Mort’s Block epitomises that classic approach in its concentration of fruit and singular purity of expression. Floral and spring-like in scent: citrus blossom, lime, spicy musk, orange peel. Youthful, taut in structure with emerging white peach, ginger spice and citrus flavours. Time is on its side. Mort’s Block, which is the basis for this label, boasts old vines planted in 1970 and grown on red loamy soils over limestone. That limestone plays a role. There’s an almost effortless balance here with mineral-laced fineness. Watervale Riesling in a great year deserves more time in the cellar, but few will be able to resist opening a bottle right now. Drink 2022-2035.

    2021 Kusuda Riesling
    Martinborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $86. 99
    Bottle
    $1043.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Stelvin

Hiro Kusuda was born in Tokyo where he worked as a lawyer before a stint in Australia. Along the way his love affair with wine and winemaking grew, and eventually he set off to complete his studies at Geisenheim in Germany before moving to Martinborough in New Zealand to make hand crafted Pinot Noir. Kusuda is known for attention to detail, to the point that each berry is picked individually at harvest by his Japanese friends that fly out each year to assist. Naturally this precision comes at a cost, in particular the miniscule volumes produced, and as such stocks are extremely limited.

The 2021 Riesling leads with salted lime, green apple skins, preserved citrus and cheesecloth. The palate is rich and fleshy, with a fine spool of acid that weaves the fruit and phenolics together as one. This textural wine has a long future in front of it. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2037.

This shows very intense lime, green melon and crushed stone. Some gun metal, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with zingy acidity. Tangy and bright. Off-dry. Drink now.

Fruit was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1974. Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Lifted lemon and lime aromas are trailed by hints of toast, bees wax and steely kerosene like notes. Zesty lemon, lime and orange rind flavours are underscored by racy acidity which imparts a taut steely feel across the palate. Subtle toasty kerosene and mineral elements are also present. Finishes dry and tightly focused with a long precise aftertaste.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
