Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

Bitter lemons and orange pith, as well as barely ripe nectarines and loquat. Medium-to full-bodied with raw power to the acidity and crystalline purity to the citrus fruit. Long and mineral on the finish.

The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

This is a remarkably mineral and taut style with dried citrus, quartz, ivory and brightly squeezed citrus. Edgy and compact on the palate with subtle, caressing phenolics and vibrant, bright acidity. Long and very citrusy on the finish. Drink now or hold.

A fabulous GG to drink now, thanks to an exotic-fruit character that's totally ripe yet so delicate, the succulence not a jot too much. Great balance through the long, very polished finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink or hold.

The delicious paradox of this great dry riesling is the way it is built on an imposing scale, but is very pure and super straight without any hint of heaviness, even on the very long powerful finish. You'll need to be patient for at least a couple of years if you want to experience all the subtle nuances, but the ripe mirabelle note is already delightful. At least thirty years of ageing potential.

For once orchard fruit getsthe upper hand on meadow herbs in a Christmann Grosses Gewächs, but not in a heavy-handed but rather delightfully animating way. Fine mineral and herbal notions add interest and the merest hint of residual sugar serves only to increase the Idig’s power of seduction. I liked the 2014 for its subtlety, but think the 2016 deserves an extra half point for elegance.

Produced from a vineyard planted in 1974 believed to be amongst the oldest Riesling vines in Tasmania, this wine is only produced in top vintages. Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green coursing around the edges. Intense aromas of lime juice meld into orange blossom, faint honeyed notes and some smoky minerality. Nicely rounded in the mouth, the palate is bursting with ripe lime, red apple and citrus fruits. Infusions of orange blossom, light honeysuckle and subtle smoky mineral characters flow onto the back half. Dry to off dry finish with crisp acidity enhancing the long scrumptious aftertaste.

Comes from Bream Creek's 44yo riesling vines, believed to be the oldest in Tasmania. It is already flaunting its wares with titratable acidity of 8.2g/l and residual sugar of 7.3g/l. It simply ratchets up the power of all in the inputs, and will give pleasure when very young or very old - and any point along the way. Drink by 2038.

Bream Creek has been around since the 1970s and the Reserve Old Vine Riesling is made from the first plantings in 1974.
Older vines should bring intensity and focus and that is exactly what is happening here. The green apple is a focused Bramley apple, lemon zest, sherbet, grapefruit curd, lemon blossom and fresh limes all are precise and intense. There is a hint of maturity in the kerosene and a silky richness to the vanilla notes but ultimately this is still so youthful with many years to come.  Quintessentially Tasmanian, this is a wine with a glorious sense of place and sense of self, delightful. Drink 2021-2031.

Loads of floral perfume, preserved lemon, pretty talc scents, a bit of warm river pebble, lime juice. Delicate in the palate, more lime juice here, tart and with great energy, crispness, cool herbal notes, some chalky pucker and endless mouth-watering length. Tightly wound but slightly juicy, if you get the drift. Beautiful expression, high toned saline mineral acidity, refreshing now to the max, will last a generation. Drink 2021-2040+

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents followed by hints of green apple and talc. Very concentrated and textured the palate is engulfed with mouth watering lime and citrus fruits which are sprawled over a back drop of orange rind, talc and minerals. Crunchy acidity backs the fruit. Fantastic power with a long tangy aftertaste.

Brilliant water like core with a distinctive greenish tinge running around the outskirts. Intense lime and lemon scents are married to notions of wet steel, chalk and minerals. Zesty lemon, lime and orange rind flavours fill the mouth and are underpinned by racy acidity. Finishes dry and crisp with steely mineral characters chiming in on the back half. Excellent drive and concentration with a long mouth watering aftertaste.

Very Intense Release. So much perfume, so much velocity and fruit power to taste. Citrus oil, apple juice concentrate, faintest honeyed character, a sluice of saline minerality. Powerful, amazing white wine here. A few grades up in usual density and intensity from Crawford River on this cuvee. Drink 2021 - 2030+

A combination of crushed and whole-bunch fruit, neutral yeast, fermentation in stainless steel, 3 months on lees prior to racking and blending. Not fined. So youthful, so fresh in a squeezed juice kind of way. Lemon jelly crystals, lemon drop, grapefruit pith, orange peel, lime blossom, in scent and on the palate. Nice texture in building phase. But, as usual, the co-star with equal billing in this production is the crunchy, tangy acidity. Drink by 2031.

Still rather closed on the nose this has both seductive peachy fruit and graceful acidity on the palate. A seamless harmony and the finish is long and refined! Better from 2018 through 2035.

The 2016er Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG is made from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. The wine develops a great nose of mirabelle, tangerine, brown sugar, mint, flowers, whipped cream, and fine spices. The wine proves rather firm and structured on the palate and leaves a fully spicy feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a fruity and elegantly light style. Drink 2021-2031.

Apple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.

More exotic than Dr. Loosen's other 2016 auslese and a bit more opulent too, but it also has a very serious structure that drives the powerful finish. Drink from 2020 to 2060.

This offers a gorgeous nose of almond, pear, candied orange zest, a hint of pineapple, coconut minty herbs and spices. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. This beautifully baroque expression of Auslese GK is still rather bold and will need a little bit of time to fully develop its inner balance. 2026-2046.

Whether it’s a function of the site or of the level of botrytis, this leaves behind the primary juiciness that characterized the “regular” Loosen Auslesen of the vintage. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

Animating and vividly bright for an Auslese, this displays an impressive concentration of fresh strawberry and kiwi laced with lime. Honeysuckle adds alluring inner-mouth perfume, and a glossy, subtly creamy texture serves as the perfect foil for the wine’s bracing brightness and infectious juiciness. Where the corresponding Sonnenuhr conveyed an extremely subtle impression of botrytis, here I can scarcely find any such impression – not that I’m complaining! The vibrant finish delivers tingling brightness of citrus, an invigorating crunch of strawberry seeds, wafting florality and a faint slick of quince jelly to accompany its irrepressible fresh fruitiness. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

Yes, this is a medium-sweet riesling, but the breathtaking spectrum of fruit aromas, from white peach through to mangosteen, renders this almost irrelevant. And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

So sharply focussed and really concentrated for this category. Stunning mineral freshness illuminates the succulent fruit like a laser beam shining on a diamond. Great potential.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

The bright colored 2019 Riesling Scharzhof displays very fine Saar typicity on the nose. This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The times of calling this is a Best Buy are long gone, but if you ant to taste the DRC of Riesling, you should definitely try it. Tasted in April 2020.

For the estate-riesling category, this is an impressively complete wine with white and yellow-peach, ripe-gooseberry and fresh-mint aromas. Medium-dry, succulent and vibrant with a very long, clean, minty finish.

The 2019er Riesling Scharzhof is an off-dry wine made from Estate holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Oberemmeler Rosenberg, and Saarburger Rausch. This bright white-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, apricot blossom, a hint of cream, smoke, slate, and still quite some residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves gorgeously intense and even almost powerful on the palate at first, but then develops great finesse in the long and subtle finish. Some minty herbs join the gorgeous flavors of white peach, chalky minerals, and a hint of whipped cream in the delicately airy and off-dry tasting after-taste. This wine proves a huge success but one which will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to develop its full aromatic finesse.

With striking clarity and purity, this is the sort of riesling you can get lost in, merely by breathing in the aromas of fresh sliced limes, white peaches and grapefruit, as well as nuances of white flowers, gun flint and spice. The palate has a similarly complete and composed style, leading you along with pristine lime, apple, white-peach and fresh-pear flavors. Long and effortless, this is all so pleasurable. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

It’s juicy and floral, cinnamon sticks, sweet apple with ripe lime juice acidity, light powdery texture, and a pretty but slightly savoury finish of excellent length. I most often prefer the dry Rieslings from Frankland Estate, so perhaps bear that in mind. Drink 2020 - 2026.

Off-dry and crafted from a plot-by-plot-by-row selection across the most propitious sites. Lemon squash, candied citrus zest, mountain herb and tonic. This serves as a transparent stream of uncluttered riesling scents, neither too dry and sour; nor excessively fruity and dainty. Make no mistake, despite its ethereal flow, this mid-weighted riesling packs punch across a long finish of sap and crunch, the dollop of sugar mitigating the grape's soprano acidity.

Lime juice, green apple, a lick of barely there grapefruit pithy here. Tangerine to finish. And minerally. Strong minerally finish, indeed. Tickles with its detail, filigree and stippled texture at once. Magic wine.

Beautiful perfume that reflects perfectly into flavours in the palate, a shimmering, glassy and tense feel drawn long and to a powdery, lightly puckering and, again, talc-like lingering finish. Epic.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

Parcels of the Berg Rottland vineyard site stretching into the village of Rüdesheim predominantly consist of deep loess soils. Elsewhere shallow, gravely soils emerging from slate and sandstone prevail. Yields are very low, at about 25 hl/ha.

A stunning GG equivalent! Serious ripeness, but it somehow remains poised and precise with minty freshness that gives it a light feel. The flavors roll gracefully over the palate through to the very long, grapefruit-peel and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

This is absolutely fascinating in its purity, finesse and complex elegance. Round and terribly lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and ripe, crystalline acidity, this is a highly elegant, delicate and complex Riesling that is enormously filigreed yet tensioned and long. A goddess of the greatest finesse and elegance. The sweetness, body and minerality are in perfect balance.

The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. The vibrant finish delivers a mouthwatering abundance of mineral salts and displays superb transparency to herbal, crystalline stony, slatey and smoky nuances.

In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting Pinot Noir, Riesling and savoury Shiraz.
While working in the Pfalz wine region of Germany, Nick was converted to the local method of selecting the harvest date of riesling grapes based on their acid content and structure ‒ rather than the traditional Australian manner of harvesting on sugar concentration and grape flavour. These grapes then ferment into riesling wines with delicate citrus flavours and aromas, compared to the tropical spectrum of a riper harvest.
The mid-palate structure of GDF riesling is invigorated by sur lie ageing, which involves keeping the finished wine on ferment lees for 6-18 months.

Major minerality at the very long, powerful finish. And all this at just 12.5% alcohol. Better from 2018.

Starts off sweet on the tongue with a ripe peachy note, but salty minerality and ample acidity take care of a well-balanced flavour. Generous and charming.

Full-bodied, round and creamypiquant on the palate, with lush and intense fruit, grainy tannins and some prominent oak that still has to be integrated (Hoesch 1200-liter Stückfass) this is a complex and mouth-filling Pettenthal that needs some years to develop and gain finesse.

Plenty of patience with the harvest has been rewarded with a successful alliance of sweet citrus fruit including mandarin, juicy acidity and generous body, but the icing on the cake, as always, is that fine dusting of sweet spices which gets the palate tingling.

On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure and very elegant Riesling with intense fruit, fine tannins and a long, intense finish. This Rothenberg is ripe, rich and lush but highly elegant, fresh and even finessed, with enormous salinity and a very long finish. Just 12.18% alcohol. This is a great Riesling that can age for 20, probably more, years. Great balance and complexity.

Aromas of ripe red apple and lime intermix with hints of mandarin, orange blossom and traces of mineral. Fruity red apple, lime and mandarin flavours are backed by a flinty minerality. Finishes off dry to dry with snappy acidity and an elegant yet refreshing aftertaste.

Fruit is sourced from long term Henschke Eden Valley growers, whose vines are up to 50 years old, growing in low-vigour ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude.
Brilliant water like core with a distinctive greenish tinge to the edges. Elevated lime juice, green apple and lemon scents have a talc overlay with some chalky mineral notes also evident. Racy and intense, zipping across the palate with fantastic drive are lime, green apple and citrus flavours. Chalky talc and flinty mineral characters sit in the background. Finishes dry and crisp with a long nervy aftertaste.

Lifted lime, red apple and honeysuckle aromas meld into hints of lemon butter and oily toast like notes. Well rounded lime, citrus and red apple fruits are backed by frisky acidity with some delicate honeysuckle and wet steel nuances lying underneath. Dry flinty finish with a snap fresh aftertaste.

Full-bodied, intense and enormously salty on the palate, this is a very fine and long Uhlen with sexy fruit and elegant texture. Crystalline but lush and assertive, this has grip and tension and a remarkable intensity. Another great wine from winemaker Kathrin Starke and her boss Reinhard Löwenstein. The blue slate of these terraces has given this a lemon and mint character, plus just a hint of peach. Very long finish that feels almost weightless.

The nose is deep and flinty, with perfectly ripe, precise stone fruit intermixed with crunchy slate aromas. Highly elegant and beautifully balanced, this is an almost creamy-textured Röttgen with great finesse and elegance. The finish is lush and stimulatingly salty, provided with very fine tannins and a lovely grip with very fine bitters. Very long, intense and fresh. One of the classics of Hermann-Löwenstein. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.

Still rather funky on the nose from wild ferment and long lees contact, this has plenty of pineapple and lemon zest on the palate. It may start out quite creamy, but then it turns firm and seriously mineral on the long finish.

This is a full-bodied, lush and fruity dry Riesling with an elegant, mouth-filling texture and a vibrating mineral tension and long-lasting salinity. This is firmly structured, with lovely bitters in the finish and grapefruit flavors in the aftertaste. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.

Another rather yeasty 2017 from here. The peach, pomelo and green-chili aromas are just beginning to emerge. However, on the palate it's already succulent and racy with an intense wet-stone character at the long finish. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certified. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
