2019 Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos Fremine
    Loire Valley, FRANCE
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Based in Savennieres, Thibaud Boudignon is one of the new young stars of the Loire Valley. In addition to his prime plots in Savennieres, Thibaud also owns two small vineyards across the river on the south side of the Loire in the Anjou. Thibaud has worked with Philippe Charlopin in Gevrey Chambertin, Chateau Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux (amongst others) and also in Australia before settling in the Loire, thereby building up a wealth of experience without having been born into a wine producing family. Working organically in the vineyards he harvests by hand making successive tries throughout each vineyard ending with yields that are much lower than the appellation rules allow. In the winery the grapes are whole bunch pressed with no settling and the juice is kept cold before starting a long slow fermentation. He vinifies with natural yeasts and ages the wines on lees with minimal SO2 in a mixture of barrels ranging from 300-600 litres.

This Clos Fremine site adjoins Clos de la Hutte separated only by stone walls surrounding each Clos and a tiny road between and is planted to 1.5ha of vines from massale selection, with the original material coming from vines of more than 100 years old. Sloping towards the Loire the soils have a fine cover of sand blown over the underlying schist across many millenia which conveys a silky elegance to the resulting wine, giving more immediacy and enabling this wine to be appreciated in its youth.

    Other Reviews....
An elegant and pure style that offers a delightful silken texture. The 2019 Clos de Fremine floats delicately, almost as if you are tasting a cloud, despite containing plenty of intensity in its focused core of fruit. There's a burst of fresh acidity and a bristle of fine-grained texture; whether that's the tannin or the soil, it's there on the finish. I could tell you it tastes of apples and citrus, but this is a wine that seems to care less about fruit descriptors and more about the essence of its place. Drink 2021 - 2029.

Named in honour of his mother Françoise, who passed away when Thibaud was 17, and his father François, Anjou Blanc a Francois(e)… is an electric and powerful expression of Chenin Blanc. Hailing from the same vineyard in St-Lambert-du-Lattay as his regular Anjou Blanc, this however sees fermentation in wood including some 300L cigares, used to build lees complexity. Maturation then occurs in these cigares along with 700L demi-muids (30% new) for 15–18 months.

Firm reduction renders the nose impossible to accurately assess. More interesting are the finer and more elegant though less concentrated middle weight flavors exude a subtle stoniness on the lingering and almost delicate finale. This sleek effort is already quite harmonious and a wine that should drink well both young and with up to a decade of bottle age. Drink through 2028+.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet La Combette 1er Cru has a wonderful, tensile, energetic bouquet with even more mineralité than the excellent Chalumaux. The palate is very well balanced with lemon rind, orange pith and mandarin, good extract and density towards the finish with quite a spicy, stem ginger and lemongrass tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb. Drink 2024-2042.

Still in barrel, unracked. Lemon and lime, a mild reduction gives some grip to the nose in the way that the Charmes does not. This has a wonderful volume of fruit in the mouth, fills out the back of the palate and good acidity. Fair to long finish.

Ripe and exuberantly fresh aromas are comprised by notes of roasted nuts, acacia blossom and lemon confit. The lilting and utterly delicious medium weight flavors are intense to the point of being almost painful while exhibiting fine length on the stony, bone-dry and sneaky long cuts-like-a-knife finale. A quality Meursault villages. Drink through 2026+.

The 2020 Meursault Village comes from 12 parcels and sees no new oak (barrels one to five years old). Taken from tank, it has a taut, fresh, walnut and smoke-tinged bouquet that has a pleasing strictness. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, saline, lightly spiced with an almost Charmes-like finish. This is work seeking out. Drink 2024-2037.

Pale colour with a light lime tint. No new wood from here on. Some apple but also fresh pears here, a pleasing but not excessive ripeness. Gorgeous fruit on the second half of the palate, a rounded Meursault still with a fresh thread through the middle.

A slightly riper nose offers up its array of poached pear, spice, white flowers and a hint of fennel. There is better volume and equally good vibrancy to the attractively textured medium-bodied flavors, all wrapped in a more subtly mineral-infused, moderately austere and sneaky long finish. Drink through 2027+.

The 2020 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a lively Alpine-fresh bouquet with lemon verbena, fern and touches of yellow plum. Very vivacious and nicely delineated. The palate is well-defined with good weight, not complex perhaps, though there is satisfying density towards the finish with veins of shaved almonds and stem ginger, the latter lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2024-2042.

Still in barrel, unracked. Pale lemon and lime, some citrus in with the apple here. Almost a Iime note as well, a more chiselled finish, white fruit, is going to take a little time, a wine to keep, which remains one of the great qualities chez Matrot.

A markedly floral-suffused nose speaks mainly of various ripe white orchard fruit, hazelnut and lemon zest. There is both better volume and richness to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the seriously persistent if youthfully austere finale. While this too could use a bit more depth, this wine has a superb track record for aging out well. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru comes from three parcels, 70% Charmes-Dessus and 30% Charmes-Dessous, has a beautifully defined bouquet with no new oak, despite its subtle creaminess implying there might be, say 20% or so. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tension, taut and quite saline with an edgy, quite saline finish not unlike a Puligny. Razor-sharp Meursault! Drink 2025-2048.

Still in barrel, unracked. Pale colour, little or no nose. Racy and generous with weight of fruit behind, more body than Chalumeaux but less finesse, show the oak a touch even without any new barrel. Solid rather than flamboyant.

Smoky notes of mineral reduction add breadth to the equally cool and airy nose of green apple, citrus and a plenitude of floral wisps. The dense yet refined medium weight flavors possess a positively gorgeous texture that carries over to the markedly stony bitter lemon zest finale that possesses not only stunningly good length but terrific complexity as well. This borderline tannic effort is very much built to reward extended cellaring and will need at least some. The word brilliant comes to mind and the 2020 version is one of the best recent Matrot Perrières I've seen. Drink through 2032+.

The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a delineated bouquet, demonstrating fine mineralité and tension, the oak here well integrated (no new barrels used here.) The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and density, a satisfying bead of acidity, but my only quibble is that it does not quite deliver the stoniness, the mineralité of a great Perrières on the finish. Still, there is impressive length and it should still age well in bottle. Drink 2025-2040.

Still in barrel, unracked. Delightful pure lemon and lime colour with especial intensity on the nose. This is multi layered, certainly the concentration of fruit that one hopes for but it comes in waves rather than single overwhelming block of fruit. Excellent mineral acidity to, the most complete wine, ahead of the Combettes, and possibly even the stunning Chalumeaux.

This is also aromatically cool and airy with its notes of wet stone, acacia blossom, citrus zest and anise. The nicely rich and seductively textured middle weight flavors manage to retain very good delineation on the equally stony and lingering finish that is a bit more compact so at least some patience strongly suggested. The 2020 Puligny Chalumaux 1er Cru was showing a little reduction on the nose, although there seems to be plenty of tensile, citrus fruit here, touches of lime and orange pith. The palate is well balanced with a slightly waxy, resinous opening, fresh and quite saline though it closes down towards the finish. Nice persistence. Maybe longer-term than the La Garenne. Drink 2025-2045.

Still in barrel, unracked. Adèle’s favourite. Really racy fruit, with a fresh greengage note. Ripeness arrives quickly here but has clearly been managed well this year. The body is perfectly judged, a mix of ripe citrus and fresh pear here, beautifully judged, finesse and really long. Perfect! I don’t think I know a better Chalumeaux.

Citrus, white flower and an array of white fleshed fruit aromas complement the fine and more detailed if less expansive middle weight flavors that are at once rich and impressively long on the slightly more structured finale. The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet La Combette 1er Cru, which was still in barrel, has an impressive, detailed bouquet, the wood beautifully integrated and demonstrating impressive mineralité. The palate is very detailed from the beginning, the citrus fruit complemented by fleeting touches of apricot and mango, leading to a very poised and quite saline finish. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Picked very early as the leaves were starting to drop off. Currently this is still in barrel. Lemon and lime colour, less ripe after the episode of hydric stress, so less well balanced than the Chalumeaux. There is a little saline touch at the finish. This year I am more taken with Les Chalumeaux.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Chalumeaux 1er Cru has a refined bouquet of scents of lime flower and dew-dappled Granny Smith apples; a crushed stone scent emerges with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and quite racy and spicy. Very good depth and persistence on the finish. This gets better as it goes along. Good potential. Mid lemon and lime, offering a slightly fuller nose than the Matrot Puligny Garenne. The news from Elsa is that the lower part of their plot is doing better than the upper in the heat. Delicious floral perfume, roses even, really attractive. Seamless and more sensual than Garenne, with a really delicious long finish.

Impenetrable reduction overwhelms the underlying fruit today. Once again, the mouthfeel of the strikingly intense medium weight flavors is super-sleek while brimming with minerality on the explosively long finish that is akin to rolling small pebbles around in the mouth. The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has an intense nose, although I find more terroir expression in the La Combette or the Meursault Charmes. Maybe this was just going through a dumb phase of its élevage. The palate is fresh and vibrant with impressive depth. Quality is stacked on the finish, which is extremely well defined and demonstrates enormous length. I suspect that the aromatics will open once this is in bottle and given adequate aging. Picked early in the piece, but not suffering like the Combettes. Beautiful complete nose, showing the majesty of Perrières without any undue heat. A few pears can be coaxed out, really special. There is everything here including good natural acidity. Understated, and really fine. Plus the length! Just the right oaking too, as it has been raised in young barrels though not new.

While there is a trace of reduction it's not enough to completely suppress the citrusy white orchard aromas. The caressing and suave medium weight flavors possess a fine mouthfeel while the youthfully austere and dry finale is shaped by firmer lemon-tinged acidity. A very Meursault nose is comprised by notes of hazelnut, acacia blossom and a plethora of citrus elements. The 2019 Meursault Villages comes from 12 separate parcels on both the flat and sloped parts of the appellation. The fragrant bouquet features lime, citrus peel and light orange blossom scents. The palate is well balanced with crisp orange zest and mandarin notes, moderate depth and a slightly waxy texture toward the finish. Again, it just lacks a little persistence on the aftertaste, but there is plenty of freshness and what you might call "guts." Drink 2023 - 2032.

From 12 plots, all around the village, with no new wood and now in tank. Light reductive nose, even a touch of something interestingly yeasty. Pale primrose, with a lifted attractive fruit. Plenty of juicy fruit here, lots of energy, good acidity too, maybe not a, butter and hazelnuts wine of yore, but a Meursault of substance.

Here too there is a hint of sulfur on the lightly wooded aromas of white peach, citrus and pretty floral nuances.
