Ménétrières reflects a mix of three soil types, clay, limestone and marl. One of the fuller yellow colours. Almost banana and cream on the nose, high class though. Here the fruit and the crystalline racy character march hand in hand, very well integrated with the oak as well. Waves of flavour course across the palate. Clearly an additional nobility, with a fine backbone and excellent length. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2038.

Here the nose is similar to the Perrières but with more floral influence. In contrast to the relatively refined mouthfeel of the Perrières, the notably bigger-bodied flavors are rich, concentrated and powerful with seriously good punch on the strikingly long, balanced and sappy finale. In the context of what is typical for Pouilly-Fuissé, this is a big wine. Drink through 2030+.

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Ménétrières 1er Cru is more reticent on the nose following on from the Les Perrières. Crushed stone and subtle menthol notes emerge with aeration. Fine delineation (again). The palate is well-balanced with fine depth, but this year, I found more complexity within the Les Perrières, and it needs a little more mineralité on the finish. Nonetheless, it is a well-crafted Pouilly-Fuissé, albeit not best in show this vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

Over the crest from Ménétrières, with more of a northern aspect as well as east, lots of stones in a light marly limestone. Once again, the Tournant de Pouilly shows a superb backbone, rinsed in lemon and lime, on a very pure white fruit, apples in the orchard, one feels to be hardly touching the potential of this wine. Stunning potential. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2040.

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Tournant de Pouilly 1er Cru, which is located in the climat of Les Reisses, has a sophisticated bouquet with crushed stone, orchard fruit and noisettes. The 2022 is pure and quite seductive. The palate is nicely balanced with a keen thread of acidity. It's a little more tensile than the Les Ménétrières this year, with a bright, lightly spiced, persistent finish. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.

Pretty, cool and airy aromas of apple, pear, acacia and a whiff of lemon are complemented by delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors that possess fine volume, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, clean, dry and well-balanced finale. This is a lovely Puligny villages and worth considering. Drink through 2028+.

Pale yellow, firm bouquet as a little bit of sulphur at this stage. Clean, brisk, medium powerful. Fills out really well on the palate, with a grapey generosity. More spritz in a second sample, a tiny bit more alcohol, but excellent length. The third is crunchy and spicy. Excellent. Seven plots in all across the village Drink from 2027-2032.

A slightly riper nose reflects notes of petrol, white peach and rosemary oil. There is more size and weight to the richer, even opulent and generously proportioned, medium weight flavors that terminate in a bitter lemon-inflected, attractively dry and long if mildly rustic finale. Planted in 2013 close by the Château de Chassagne. Clear pale lemon yellow, with quite an open bouquet, light apple fruit, without the complete feel of the Puligny. A little youthful bitterness, but good length, an attractive wine which does not quite challenge the Puligny. Drink from 2026-2030.

A discreet application of wood sets off cool and layered aromas of the essence of white orchard fruit, citrus confit and acacia blossom. There is again fine richness to the medium-bodied flavors that retain better detail on the mineral-driven and focused finish that delivers sneaky good length. This isn't exactly chiseled but it's close and a wine that should repay up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2029+.

A full fresh pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is deliciously elegant, with the charming floral qualities that we rather missed in the vintages 2018-2020. The acidity melds in correctly with an impressive weight of fruit on the palate. Golden notes, with a welcome youthful bitterness. Medium plus length, quite accessible but with structure nonetheless. A strikingly fresh, cool and pretty nose combines notes of citrus, acacia blossom and green apple. His losses to frost prompted Carillon to blend much of his holdings together into a cuvée of 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village, which is composed of around 80% premier cru and 20% village-level fruit. Exhibiting aromas of dried apricots, tangerine, honeycomb, preserved peach, flowers and nutmeg, it's medium-bodied, with a satiny attack, lively acids and a mordant finish.

Glowing yellow colour, quite backward, good energy. A little bitterness, not the wealth of the hotter years, but good tension. Second cuvée a little less colour and power, but fuller on the palate, a more classical succulence. Third also discreet on the nose, but poised with good acidity. And some length. Going to work very well. Drink from 2025-2028.

La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

Cuvee Marguerite Chardonnay hails from old vines planted in 1902 on grey marl soils. Vinification includes 100% whole cluster fermentation, along with full malolactic fermentation before being aged three years in oak barrels. Bottled only in magnums.

Here too whiffs of petrol and phenolic character add breadth to the aromas of essence of pear, orange peel and acacia blossom. Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.

Here a more elegant nose resembles that of the Charles Maxim save for a broader range of floral elements. Fine pale yellow. The bouquet bursts out of the glass, but with a sense of tension quite different from Charles Maxime. Partly floral, partly fresh greengage, but with some riper tendrils curling round the edges. There is a backbone to this wine, and a sense of precision, which is deeply impressive. Then comes the flesh you would expect from this relatively sunny summer. This wine makes quite a statement. Good natural acidity is part of the equation. Complex and complete agrees Jean-Pierre. 55 year old vines which never over-produce. Drink from 2028-2035.

Like the Bouchères, this is also relatively firmly reduced. On the palate though there is both excellent freshness and verve suffusing the finer and sleeker middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively complex, long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is excellent and a wine that should easily repay a decade plus of keeping. Highly recommended particularly for those who enjoy cellaring their whites. Drink through 2032+.

Medium to full lemon yellow. The nose has the sensuous richness which characterises Charmes, and the oak seems more prominent. No more new oak has been used for the Charmes but a particular barrel may have given this buttery edge. Jean-Pierre plans to fine this a little more to bring it more into line with the others. The core wine on the palate has the distinction of the other Meursaults, though the buttery note resurfaces at the finish. I have lowered the score based on today’s tasting but have confidence that the final wine will merit more. In fact, the finish encourages me to go up again. Nine barrels, two new, one an experiment, one traditional in its toasting. Drink from 2029-2036.

As is often the case, the aromatic profiles of the Pucelles and the BBM are quite similar with the slight exception that the latter is even more floral in character. On the palate though there is more volume, richness and concentration with the medium-bodied flavors displaying impressive power as well as an abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the notably firm acid spine supporting the hugely long, balanced and very classy finale. This too is terrific and a wine that should age gracefully for 20+ years. Drink through 2034+.

Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts and spices, Leflaive's 2022 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a cool, harmonious, integrated profile and a long, mouthwatering finish. The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a captivating sea cave and oyster shell-scented nose that is so different from the Puligny Premier Crus. The palate is slightly reductive but in a positive way, imparting a light bitterness and tension. There's tremendous weight on the finish, but it retains linearity and focus. This is another of Leflaive's 2022s that will demand time in bottle, but it is preloaded with potential. Drink 2028-2050.

Pale lemon yellow. An idea of velvet on the nose, a puree of fresh apples, a real concentration of pure white fruit on the palate with a rinse of lemon. Fine tension, nothing too oppressive in the weight, nuanced throughout. I wonder if the Bienvenues has quite the same length as the Pucelles. Yet the wine is detailed and surprisingly stony, Grand Cru from first sniff. Drink from 2029-2038.

Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren't quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it's almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. Moreau’s village Chablis is drawn mostly from 20 to 30 year old vineyards in Préhy and Courgis, both in the south of Chablis. Then, there are parcels in Chablis and Chichée (under the Premier Cru Vaugiraut). All up, the domaine has the luxury of working with 30 parcels scattered across the appellation, representing a variety of soil structures and exposures. All the fruit from the younger vines is sold off in bulk, which perennially helps Moreau deliver a Chablis greater than the sum of its parts.

The Chablis was picked over various dates, depending on the plot. The fruit was subject to a very gentle four-hour press, and the juice was fermented with natural yeasts (a rarity in Chablis). It was raised mostly in tank, yet the élevage was unhurried. This spent 20 months on lees, considerably longer than most Chablis of this level. These traditional methods, along with hand-harvesting, the quality of the terroir, low yields and the full ripeness levels at which the fruit is harvested help to explain the mouth coating texture, salty depths and the quality that is on offer.

The most south-westerly of all the Chablis Premiers Crus, Les Beauregards is one of its coolest due to its altitude and location at the end of Chablis’ Left Bank. It’s also one of the steepest (meaning the clay soils are shallow, and the limestone marl is never far from the surface) and one of the highest, rising to 300 metres. While this parcel has been in the family’s hands for decades, it was replanted in 2001 with mass-selection cuttings from Stéphane Moreau’s most treasured vines. Now that the new vines have reached 20 years, Virginie Moreau believes they deliver the intensity to join the Moreau-Naudet lineup. High on the hill, Moreau farms almost one hectare of vines that catch only the sun's coolest rays, meaning Les Beauregards is one of the last vineyards to be harvested. All these factors play out in tension, cut and pithy citrus notes that course through the palate.

On the left bank of the Serein and the middle of the slope, Vaillons is a particularly well-positioned Premier Cru that enjoys an excellent reputation thanks to the work of several key growers. The domaine works with vines planted in 1974 in the lieux-dits of Les Epinottes (a cooler part of the vineyard) and Roncières (which provides more flesh). Then, a parcel of 75-year-old vines in Sécher usually accounts for 30% of the blend and provides intense mineral cut and structure. The wine fermented and aged in both tank and older barrels. Each parcel was vinified separately before blending.

Based in the village of La Roche Vineuse, Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne founded their domain in 1987 after taking over the 4.5ha of vineyards of the 200-year-old Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin. Since then they have grown to now include 26 hectares of vineyards stretching across Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Moulin à Vent, along with their home in Macon's La Roche Vineuse. While not certified organic, from the beginning they have shunned the use of chemicals in their vineyards and maintain their soils with tilling between the rows. Winemaking is traditional with the handpicked grapes pressed as whole clusters before fermentation and maturation mainly in cask, where new oak use is decreasing year on year.

Barrel aged for 18 months using 30-50% new oak. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Ripe pear and peach aromas overlaid with a mix of honeycomb and bacon fat notes emanate from the glass with hints of crème brulee and wets stone also evident. Rich pear and dried honey flavours are intermeshed with faint crème brulee, almond and wet slate on the back half. Full creamy like textural feel concluding with good freshness and a long wet slate and almond laced aftertaste.

The 2020 Saint-Véran Côte-Rôtie comes from soils with a high level of active limestone, prompting Merlin to describe the wine as almost Chablis-like. It has a taut and direct, minimalist, flinty bouquet where you can almost smell that limestone. The palate is tense and very mineral-driven, plenty of salinity here…it just cries out for some fruits de mer! Drink 2023-2035.

This superb lieu-dit in the village of Davayé in the St-Véran appellation faces due south on steep, rocky soils at the base of the rock of Vergisson. It is among the first parcels to ripen. Grapes were picked on 27 August and they delivered a wine of concentration and depth, with aromas of ripe apricot and peach, accented with a saline minerality and a hint of spice from the oak élevage. This substantial wine is eminently ageworthy. Drink 2023 - 2033.

The single vineyard Les Cras bottling is the emblematic wine of Domaine Olivier Merlin. Situated almost next door to their house on the limestone plateau, Les Cras produces wine that is both generous and approachable, yet near unmatched for longevity in the region.

    Other Reviews....
Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036.

A marvel of complexity and depth, with aromas ranging from bright citrus to richer notes of melon and ripe apple, along with hints of hazelnut and mineral with a broad and ripe texture which is eminently balanced. 18 months in cask (10% new), it is drinking well now but should age nicely over the mid-term. An emblematic cuvée for the domaine. Drink 2023 - 2030.

A nicely shaped Chenin Blanc with pear, red apple skin and quince flavours to the fore.

Domaine Pichot is a 24Ha family estate in Vouvray on the right bank of the Loire, where vignerons dedicate their time to the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, locally coined ‘Pineau de la Loire’, to produce dry, sweet and sparkling whites. The Coteau de la Biche is the only vineyard of the estate, planted on silex layered over limestone slopes. It is the spot of choice to make dry whites of great class, displaying the richness of ripe Chenin with a minerality that can rival that of the grandest Chablis. The la Biche undergoes a combination of ferments in both stainless steel and 400 litre barrels.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green to the surrounding edges and a watery hue. Pear, baked apple and quince aromas are trailed by faint honeysuckle and cinnamon spice notes. Delicious pear, red apple skin and quince flavours are nicely shaped across the mid palate with delicate honeysuckle and wet slate elements the undercard. Brisk acidity with a gentle chalky feel to the dry, elegant finish that shows good length.

Demi-sec Vouvray is, after sparkling Vouvray, the most popular wine of the appellation and perhaps the most typical, showing Chenin Blanc at it most perfumed and expressive with just a delicate sweetness balancing the lively acidity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated baked pear, Jonathan apple and honeysuckle aromas mix with hints of quince and cinnamon spice. Luscious pear, baked apple and musk flavours are texturally full and round with some honeysuckle and quince elements lurking in the background. Excellent concentration finishing off dry with fresh acidity. A dash of spice emerging on the long enveloping conclusion.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.

Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

Perrieres stands alone in Meursault as its finest wine and many regard this vineyard as a candidate for upgrading to grand cru status. Located on the southern border of the appellation bordering Puligny Montrachet, here the aromas, flavours, and structure of this fabulous premier cru site are very distinct, with real intensity, lift, and perhaps more citric character.

The Californian project of two classic houses of France, Racines is led by vignerons Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne. The aim of this collaboration is to create a range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool-climate of the Sta. Rita Hills, in Santa Barbara County, drawing upon each individual’s experience and knowledge from the Old World. The resulting wines, thanks to careful handling and “classic” (as in less hands-on) winemaking, highlight each specific terroir with purity and transparency.
Two north-facing parcels of Chardonnay make up the Bentrock vineyard. One sits a little higher, overlooking the Sta. Rita Hills, in a very exposed perch on rocky soils; the lower one, protected by the hilltop parcel, is located slightly to the east and has more soil (a mix of sandy and clay loam).

    Other Reviews....
A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard dazzles with its purity and translucence. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, white flowers and mint give the 2019 its brilliant, sculpted personality. Soaring aromatics and bright saline accents build into the regal finish. Drink: 2023-2031.

A rich, effusive wine, the 2019 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict offers a stunning expression of this site. All the classic S&B signatures come through, kicked up with an extra touch of textural richness. Creamy and silky in the glass, the 2019 is outrageously beautiful. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and tangerine oil are some of the many notes that build in a soft, silky Chardonnay that dazzles from start to finish. Impressive. Drink: 2023-2031.

The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Ferments are temperature controlled in stainless steel and all but the Petit-Chablis spends some time in 2 to 5 year old barriques. Whilst the Vaudesir is a mighty Grand Cru, the signature wine of the Domaine is the lieu-dit 'Vauprin' which is one of the highest vineyards in Chablis and gives remarkable mineral influence to the wine.

Coming from a 1.8ha plot, at one of the highest plantings of AP Chablis, this has more concentration than brothers David and Arnaud's 'straight' Chablis, with an additional mineral character balancing the concentration of fruit on the palate. Intense peach, nectarine and honeycomb scents fill the nostrils with lemon butter, crème brulee, citrusy nougat, bees wax and subtle bacon fat notes ensuing. The mid weighted palate combines rich nectarine, pear and dried honey flavours with a refined feel. Citrusy nougat, crème brulee, bacon fat and delicate hazelnut characters linger in the background. Finishes dry and fresh with a long elegant yet restrained aftertaste.

Enticing aromas of ripe apricots, peaches, golden apples, honeysuckle, nutmeg and caramel. It’s full-bodied, creamy, ripe and deliciously buttery, yet elegant, with a mineral and spicy edge. Hints of limes and apples. Why wait? Drink now.

Sylvain Pataille has been instrumental in raising the profile of Marsannay since founding his domaine in 1999. Farming around 17 hectares biodynamically, he works with a remarkable diversity of sites, from old-vine Pinot Noir to rare Aligoté Doré and Pinot Beurot, and is known for sensitive, terroir-driven élevage with a high proportion of whole bunches. His work has been central to the ongoing push for premier cru recognition in Marsannay, and his wines are frequently cited as reference points for the appellation. They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

This is the only blended Aligoté in the Pataille range. Half the fruit is harvested from old-vine Aligoté Doré in Marsannay itself, including fruit from Champ Forey on limestone and gravel, and the balance coming from Échevronne in Hautes Côtes, above Corton. The average age of the vines across the two parcels is more than 50 years, and although this is Pataille’s entry-level Aligoté, you can immediately feel the depth and energy born from the old vines and low yields. The wine ferments naturally in stainless steel before maturation in old foudre and then goes back to stainless steel for four months before bottling.

A very aligoté nose of green apple, citrus and spice introduces racy, delicious and softly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a dry, clean and refreshing finish that offers better depth and persistence than is typical for the genre. Worth a look. Drink through 2025+.

The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté, mostly aged in foudres nowadays, was the only cuvée that had been bottled by the time of my visit. With light apple blossom and waxy aromas in the glass, the well-balanced palate is fresh, finishing with a touch of lemongrass. Enjoy over the next couple of years. Drink 2024-2030.

In bottle. Mid lemon yellow. A fine tangy fruit on the nose, crunchy and classy, a little bit of almond paste, very long. Just a lovely example, straightforward by Sylvain’s standards but so persistent. Drink from 2024-2027.

This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.

Delivering aromas of pear, yellow orchard fruit, citrus oil and orange blossom, the 2021 Marsannay Blanc is medium-bodied, fleshy and perfumed with a satiny attack, racy acids and a giving, charming profile. Drink 2023-2030.

Raised in demi-muids and pièce on the lees, the 2021 Marsannay Blanc has quite a strict nose, a bit bashful at the moment. The palate has much more going on with orange zest and lime, fine length with bitter lemon on the finish. Worth seeking out. Drink 2024-2030.

Domaine Vacheron stands out as one of the top properties in Sancerre, crafting both white and red Sancerre wines with exceptional clarity and precision. Under the leadership of two young cousins, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, the domaine has fully embraced biodynamic farming practices. They refrain from using any synthetic materials in the vineyard, conduct hand-harvesting, and rely solely on fertilizer derived from compost. They intentionally keep yields low to enhance quality.
With access to prized vineyard parcels, the cousins adopt a Burgundian approach to winemaking in Sancerre. They ferment grapes from individual parcels separately and create unique blends each year. This approach allows them to explore the diverse terroirs of Sancerre and produce wines that reflect the nuances of each site.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of green apple and lime mix with some green herb, subtle herbaceous gooseberry and wet stone notes. Nicely rounded in the mouth, lime and green apple fruits show good intensity over a wet stone infused back drop of fresh herbs and minerals. Finishes dry with a lick of fresh acidity and a long stony mineral laced aftertaste.
