Since then they have grown to now include 26 hectares of vineyards stretching across Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Moulin à Vent, along with their home in Macon's La Roche Vineuse. While not certified organic, from the beginning they have shunned the use of chemicals in their vineyards and maintain their soils with tilling between the rows. Winemaking is traditional with the handpicked grapes pressed as whole clusters before fermentation and maturation mainly in cask, where new oak use is decreasing year on year.
Barrel aged for 18 months using 30-50% new oak. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Ripe pear and peach aromas overlaid with a mix of honeycomb and bacon fat notes emanate from the glass with hints of crème brulee and wets stone also evident. Rich pear and dried honey flavours are intermeshed with faint crème brulee, almond and wet slate on the back half. Full creamy like textural feel concluding with good freshness and a long wet slate and almond laced aftertaste.

The 2020 Saint-Véran Côte-Rôtie comes from soils with a high level of active limestone, prompting Merlin to describe the wine as almost Chablis-like. It has a taut and direct, minimalist, flinty bouquet where you can almost smell that limestone. The palate is tense and very mineral-driven, plenty of salinity here…it just cries out for some fruits de mer! Drink 2023-2035.

Neal Martin - VinousThis superb lieu-dit in the village of Davayé in the St-Véran appellation faces due south on steep, rocky soils at the base of the rock of Vergisson. It is among the first parcels to ripen. Grapes were picked on 27 August and they delivered a wine of concentration and depth, with aromas of ripe apricot and peach, accented with a saline minerality and a hint of spice from the oak élevage. This substantial wine is eminently ageworthy. Drink 2023 - 2033.

The single vineyard Les Cras bottling is the emblematic wine of Domaine Olivier Merlin. Situated almost next door to their house on the limestone plateau, Les Cras produces wine that is both generous and approachable, yet near unmatched for longevity in the region.
Other Reviews....
Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036.

Neal Martin - VinousA marvel of complexity and depth, with aromas ranging from bright citrus to richer notes of melon and ripe apple, along with hints of hazelnut and mineral with a broad and ripe texture which is eminently balanced. 18 months in cask (10% new), it is drinking well now but should age nicely over the mid-term. An emblematic cuvée for the domaine. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.
Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

Perrieres stands alone in Meursault as its finest wine and many regard this vineyard as a candidate for upgrading to grand cru status. Located on the southern border of the appellation bordering Puligny Montrachet, here the aromas, flavours, and structure of this fabulous premier cru site are very distinct, with real intensity, lift, and perhaps more citric character.

2019 Domaine Racines Bentrock Vineyard ChardonnaySanta Barbara, California, UNITED STATES$210. 00Bottle$2520.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkThe Californian project of two classic houses of France, Racines is led by vignerons Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne. The aim of this collaboration is to create a range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool-climate of the Sta. Rita Hills, in Santa Barbara County, drawing upon each individual’s experience and knowledge from the Old World. The resulting wines, thanks to careful handling and “classic” (as in less hands-on) winemaking, highlight each specific terroir with purity and transparency.
Two north-facing parcels of Chardonnay make up the Bentrock vineyard. One sits a little higher, overlooking the Sta. Rita Hills, in a very exposed perch on rocky soils; the lower one, protected by the hilltop parcel, is located slightly to the east and has more soil (a mix of sandy and clay loam).Other Reviews....
A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard dazzles with its purity and translucence. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, white flowers and mint give the 2019 its brilliant, sculpted personality. Soaring aromatics and bright saline accents build into the regal finish. Drink: 2023-2031.

2022 Domaine Roland Lavantureux Vauprin ChablisChablis, FRANCE$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenClosure: CorkRoland Lavantureux founded his namesake Domaine in 1978 following completion of wine school in Beaune. Since then he has built a reputation for crafting some of the most consistent and reliable examples of Chablis from vineyards planted on the prized Kimmeridgian soils around the village of Lignorelles. The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Ferments are temperature controlled in stainless steel and all but the Petit-Chablis spends some time in 2 to 5 year old barriques. Whilst the Vaudesir is a mighty Grand Cru, the signature wine of the Domaine is the lieu-dit 'Vauprin' which is one of the highest vineyards in Chablis and gives remarkable mineral influence to the wine.

Coming from a 1.8ha plot, at one of the highest plantings of AP Chablis, this has more concentration than brothers David and Arnaud's 'straight' Chablis, with an additional mineral character balancing the concentration of fruit on the palate. Manages to have weight and force, yet remains light and delicate on its feet. A touch of wood adds a different type of complexity on the palate. Drink 2025 - 2029.

2022 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay BlancBurgundy, FRANCE$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSylvain Pataille has been instrumental in raising the profile of Marsannay since founding his domaine in 1999. Farming around 17 hectares biodynamically, he works with a remarkable diversity of sites, from old-vine Pinot Noir to rare Aligoté Doré and Pinot Beurot, and is known for sensitive, terroir-driven élevage with a high proportion of whole bunches. His work has been central to the ongoing push for premier cru recognition in Marsannay, and his wines are frequently cited as reference points for the appellation. They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.

Firm reduction overshadows the fruit today though there is good freshness to the sleek, racy and delineated middle weight flavors that possess slightly better complexity on the super-refreshing, clean and bracingly dry finale. The 2022 Riesling Roche Granitique was harvested in the Brand Grand Cru. The nose is clear as a bell with a touch of smoke and a strafe of citrus, but essentially shy. Picked very late in the middle of September, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling offers a very deep, rich and intense, lime and limestone-driven bouquet that is very distinctive, rich, coolish, fresh and citric. Round and generous on the palate, this is a powerful, complex, very salivating Windsbuhl Riesling with the generosity and finesse (also in terms of acidity) of a grand cru and a lemon-fresh (and bitter) finish The wine is wide and juicy but also refined and fresh in all its minerality. It is also really rich and potent yet not at all driven by alcohol. The salinity is great here and intertwined with tannins and noble bitters. 4,400 bottles 12.46% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Lemon zestiness and lovely brightness make this mouth-puckeringly tangy and deliciously thrilling. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousAt once powerful and crystalline, this densely structured dry riesling is made for the long term. Extremely lemony and salty on the medium- to full-bodied palate, then so compact at the very long, driving finish, which is as pointed as a rapier. The last riesling harvested in this vintage, but with the lowest alcohol and the highest acidity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

From a cooler, higher part of the grand cru that is facing east-southeast on rocky, reddish soils, the 2022 Hengst Wintzenheim Riesling opens with a very deep and coolish, intense and complex yet refined and elegant, terroir-driven bouquet with fresh apple puree and spicy and saline terroir notes. Full-bodied, very elegant and not all too rich, this is a dense and well balanced, less racy Riesling than the Clos Häuserer but with a long, intense and finely tannic finish. After 500 liters in the inaugural 2021 vintage, 3,200 bottles plus 170 magnums of the 2022 vintage were filled in January 2024. The vineyard was planted in 2016 with the winery's own selections at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare, which yielded 28 hectoliters per hectare in 2022. 12.83% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. Drink 2025-2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Feb 07, 2025)The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Hengst is picked on the eastern side of the Hengst. The parcel was planted in 2016 with high density, and the first vintage of the wine was the 2021. Gorgeously smoky flint precedes subtle floral and tangerine peel notes. The juiciness on the palate is all-encompassing, spreading wonderfully ripe, fresh Mirabelle fruit pervaded by fine, tangerine-like ripe citrus. The 2022 is serene, bright and sunny, with a long, zesty aftertaste. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2050.

The late-budding and rather late-ripening Clos Saint-Urbain, in the very south of Alsace, meets the very warm and solar 2022 vintage in this wine. What a thrilling setting this is, the more so since August and September brought rather cooler conditions to this cooler but, due to its dark soils and stony terraces in summer, nevertheless warm terroir of the Rangen. Indeed, the pH level was rather low in 2022 (at 3.1) and caused a dry and tense Riesling that doesn't at all show the characteristics of the Rieslings around Turckheim or elsewhere in Alsace.
The 2022 Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann Riesling opens very clear, pure, saline/iodine-inflected and stony on the flinty or smoky nose that represents the volcanic terroir of the clos perfectly or, as Olivier Humbrecht puts it, "Like a volcano fart."
Powerful, rich and saline on the palate, this is a dense, highly complex and energetic Saint-Urbain that somehow combines the purity of Dönnhoff's Hermannshöhle with the concentration, power and mineral complexity of the magnesium-rich Rangen. The finish is very intense, dense and aromatic as well as salivating, with a great mix of tannins, saline acidity and perfectly ripe (apricot) fruit.
Pressed slowly over 14 hours, this is one of the, if not THE, finest Rangen I have tasted from Zind-Humbrecht. (Loyal readers know that I had them all a year ago.) The 2022 comes in with 12.8% alcohol and is a wine to keep for many years. Drink 2028-2090.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Feb 07, 2025)The 2022 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru was harvested among the last Rieslings but had one of the lowest alcohols, with 12.8 %. A lovely sharp, green aromatic flavor, almost of watercress intensity, fresh, green and vigorous without being unripe, sets an initial aromatic highlight. The famed smokiness arrives on the second sniff, followed by gloriously aromatic tangerine. The palate is exquisitely precise, stony, taut and naked, but oh so nuanced with immense citrus brightness. This is a marvel glimmering with zestiness, citrus and such stony directness. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousAll the yellow and fresh tropical fruit of the world is packed into this exceptionally complex and mind-blowingly intense wine that pushes the envelope of minerality all the way, and then some. The 2023 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling trocken GG is beautifully pure, clear and bright or even coolish on the deep and complex nose that is still remarkably discreet but refined for this warm, volcanic terroir and offers elegant notes of melting stones and domestic seed fruits. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a generous, juicy and fruity Riesling with fine tannins and a long, intense, spicy and aromatic, finely saline and mineral finish. This is a mouth-filling, complex and textured Riesling with crunchy tannins on the finish. It's a superb 2023 that should develop beautifully over the years in the bottle. 12.5% stated alcohol. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is picked in the fully south-facing site of porphyry and melaphyr. Cornelius Dönnhoff says this is the most challenging site to work, simply because the stones are so hard and unforgiving, retaining almost no water. Thus, a year like 2023 was brilliant for this site. It is always the first GG site to be harvested because the rock retains heat from the day. Tender reduction still casts a flinty spell on the nose. Lovely savor implies crushed citrus foliage merged into iron oxide on the nose. The palate is taut, citric, bright with immense linearity, moving with absolute ease and direction, with energy and punch, towards a zesty, cool finish, long, sustained, all with savor and saltiness. The 2023 is a total joy of clarity, direction and stony poise. This is so elegant, so slender, so powerful, and no, this is not a contradiction. (Bone-dry) Drink 2034-2070.

At least since the magical 2020 vintage, this grand cru is becoming another Dönnhoff (and Nahe) icon wine next to the estate's Hermannshöhle GG. The 2023 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling trocken GG is bright and clear on the elegant and finely juicy as well as spontaneously inviting nose that indicates perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling fruit that is fully intermingled with the terroir-driven flinty notes. Perfectly round and finessed on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and finely juicy, then utterly saline and savory as well as buoyant Dellchen that pairs purity with intensity and a long, complex and promising finish. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs is grown on porphyry with a shale cover. The vines are sheltered and have underground aquifers. A tender lemon zest note holds traces of white summer blossom, wet stone and a touch of chervil—beautifully tender. The slender palate, likewise, is lemon-dominated, bright, sunny and friendly in its citric smile. The 2023 is agile, tingling and slender with a subtle stoniness. This is as wonderfully pervasive, tart and palate-cleansing as lemon sorbet. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special, old parcel of 40-year-old Riesling within the stoniest, rockiest parts of the Permian sandstone of the Höllenpfad. A touch of yeast still plays with the ripe apricot fruit that shimmers shyly on the nose. A touch of white pepper later appears. The palate is stony yet rounded, structured by rockiness, with vivid glimmers of lemon oil, concentrated and increasingly zesty. It's pure yet has an increasingly insistent intensity, spraying with ripe lemon zestiness, white pepper and iron oxide. In the end, buffered lemon zest fills the mouth and mind. The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs is from shale soils. The nose immediately expresses water on hot stone: warm and redolent of things that are not vegetal but mineral. The palate, however, holds Riesling's alluring citrus and stone fruit. The stony depth and dimension are undeniable, waiting patiently in the background to come to the fore. For now, citrus provides the top notes, but the heart and base note is of absolute stone: wet stone, shale that holds water, salt and centuries in its depth. The buffered citrus serenity is captivating. The finish is pure lemon linearity. (Bone-dry) Drink 2027-2050.

The 2022 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs unites volcanic and shale soils. The site benefits from underground aquifers. The nose opens with a smoky slate note leading to the lemon- and lime-edged ripe stone fruit. The entire impression is one of yellow-fruited, ripe juiciness. This verges more and more into a yellow spectrum of citrus, perfumed and almost tender. The palate keeps this juicy fruit and dips it into tingling saltiness. Generosity, ripeness, saltiness and textural elements of pear peel and citrus zest unite into a very energetic, driven, almost urgent wine. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comFrom shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. Dr. Loosen has been in the same family for over 200 years, and this is the estate's classic, regional expression of the Riesling grape. Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, south facing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. This crisp, refreshing Riesling represents the jumping-in point from Dr. Loosen, capturing the elegant and racy characteristics of steep, slate-soil Mosel vineyards.
Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinge around the edges. Lime, red apple and gentle honeysuckle aromas flow from the glass followed by hints of orange blossom and slatey mineral notes. Delicious pear, lime and red apple fruits carry a light, frisky feel across the palate. Mouth-filling, saline and highly refined on the palate, this is an elegant but tight and very complex, intense, long und textural Treppchen with a sustainable and layered finish that exhibits mineral and herbal flavors as well as great and complex intensity that is sourced from the terroir and transported by the deep roots of the ancient vines. The 2023 Treppchen is a highlight of the vintage in Loosen's portfolio and most probably among all the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings from the Middle Mosel. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in December 2024. Drink 2028-2060.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs tingles with tangerine peel notes and an ethereal lift. The palate is rounder, juicier and riper than expected yet absolutely stream-lined. There is always a touch of reduction bordered by mouthwatering pithiness. This is immensely juicy and bold. (Dry) Drink 2026-2056.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousAn amazingly minerally dry Mosel riesling that seems to descend into your glass from the heavens like an angel. Incredible wildflower and peach intensity, and yet this is very elegant and subtle on the medium-bodied palate. What fantastic precision at the extremely long finish. Great aging potential. Drink from release.

2017 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Alte Reben Reserve Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$245. 00Bottle$2940.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkDr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. 2,450 bottles made. To be released in March 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 26, 2022)A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousWhat a beautiful nose of ripe peach and toasted baguette this creamy and concentrated Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG has! I love the very sensual way that the mineral acidity is woven into the ample body of this irresistible wine that defies the regular descriptors for dry Mosel riesling with its succulence. Drink or hold.

Due the rich, red volcanic soils, Urziger Wurzgarten produces wines unlike any other in the region. As the name would suggest, expect an exotic and spice laden Riesling that leans more towards tropical fruit flavours than the neighbouring vineyards.

The 2017 Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichler Réserve Alte Reben is deep and noble on the intense yet pure, refined and elegant nose that offers a subtle bouquet with elegant sur lie and ripe (mirabelle) fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round on the palate, with nutty notes, this is a very fine, vital and elegant Würzgarten with frisky, saline acidity that leads to a very elegant, intense and juicy, saline and finely bitter finish. This is a gorgeous Riesling from the Würzgarten, and it will be released in March 2023. Only 2,481 bottles made. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 26, 2022)Russet pear peel and ripe, golden pear juice appear first on the nose of the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. The palate has a wonderfully light texture and yet is dense with flavor and a smooth richness suggesting dried lemon peel, pear peel, subtle wax and tingling notions reminiscent of spiced apple. The finish is poised, extended, absolutely elegant and defined by ripe lemon freshness. Compact, concentrated, serene. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

The 2017 Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben is pure, fine and flinty on the beautifully aromatic nose that reveals tropical fruit aromas intertwined with delicate slate tones and remains utterly refined. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a fruity, saline and sustainable, very intense and stimulating Prälat with gorgeous hedonistic features. The wine is enormously aromatic and fruity, with mango and peach aromas and everything that's yellow and lush, but it also has this superb finesse of the red slate in the Prälat and reflects its sunny exposition adjacent to the riverside. 3,743 bottles filled. 12.5% stated alcohol. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 26, 2022)The nose of the 2017 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve takes some swirling but the Erdener Prälat comes alive with gentle hints of spiced orange: think subtle clove and Navel peel joined by notions of dried lemon rind. The texture is serene, smooth, utterly compact and filled with flavors of wax, lemon and slightly bitter, dried lemon zest that seems to be dissolved in subtle oiliness. A wonderful sensation on the palate, utterly bright, deeply salty and effortlessly elegant. Wow. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousEnormously dense nose of mango and papaya. Gigantic concentration and power for a German dry riesling this inhabits its own habitat on Planet Mosel. Brain-rattling intensity and energy at the moment, so we recommend decanting and using large glasses. Better still, give this a few more years in the bottle. Either way this should silence any doubters about this category. Drink or hold.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousCool and herbal, but well-balanced and elegant this 2021 riesling GG has an appealing silkiness in spite of the lemony acidity. Loosen's 2021 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben is remarkably refined on the nose that exhibits a delicate and flinty-scented bright stone fruit and Riesling aroma. The palate is round and playful, almost silky and very elegant, leading to an intense and sustainably saline and tangy finish with fine grip and good tension. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comQuite straightforward on the nose with aromas of ripe, almost baked apple and the merest notion of ginger. On the palate juicy apple is joined by a little sweet citrus fruit and just a smidgeon of spice. Despite being on the sweeter side of Grosse Gewächse, the Treppchen is most lively and refreshing. Michael Schmidt - jancisrobinson.comThe 2020er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat), and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves quite non-saying and smoky at first before fine scents of anise, minty herbs, grapefruit, floral elements, and licorice emerge from the glass. The wine is superbly playful and spicy on the very long and smoky finish. The after-taste is very pure and long. Drink 2025-2035.

Brimming with red gooseberry and white peach plus notes of fennel, wild thyme and rosemary this is clearly identifiable as a representative of its vintage, but has some notes that are far from typical for 2016. This yellow-white colored wine offers a subtly complex nose made of pear, fine spices, some citrusy elements, a hint of petrol, and subtle scents of herbs. At this stage, the smoothness of the wine is coming through on the palate yet the finish is superbly airy, multi-layered, and complex. The aftertaste is all about smoke, spices, and herbs. This wine is clearly still going through its closed phase and is best left alone for another five years or so. But then, it will prove a superbly complex expression of dry Riesling. Drink 2026-2041.

While the nose is already hugely engaging, the wine is still slightly smooth at this stage on the palate but the complexity of the finish more than hints at the greatness packed in here at maturity. The aftertaste is simply splendid as it combines the subtly fieriness so typical of the Prälat with the typical delineated juiciness of grand dry Mosel wines. This is a classic in the making! This dry Mosel masterpiece is a sleeping giant, just beginning to awaken, but has decades of life ahead of it. JamesSuckling.comIn reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. Drink 2022 - 2026.

It offers a captivatingly aromatic and smoky nose of lime, pineapple, prune, spices, herbs, a hint of camphor, licorice, and tar. The wine is very compact and has great dry extract, but also a smoother and softer side on the palate as ripe and even exotic fruits join the party. The finish is superbly long and structured, with a touch of power in the background. This is already very impressive but has clearly upside potential as it will gain finesse over the years.
