Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holdings, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture. Keeping yields low, Joseph picks on the early side to retain an unmistakable purity and freshness in his wines. He likes the tension and vibrancy in his whites, and feels it is a signature of his output. Purity is a word that Joseph particularly associates with his wines, since he doesn't like heavy handed or reductive and oaky wines, but rather he allows the different terroirs to shine through truly in the glass. The wines display a tense and vibrant profile, championing minerality and finesse yet there is a comforting richness in the mid-palate.
Other Reviews....
Riper though still quite fresh and bright aromas include those of apple compote, acacia blossom and a suggestion of crushed star anise. There is good volume to the nicely concentrated and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a sappy mouthfeel that buffers the bone-dry, youthfully austere and balanced finale. Here too a few years of cellar time should prove beneficial. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundYoung vines, the first vintage was 2019. Full mid yellow. This joins Les Frionnes the most stylish and floral of the wines to date on the nose. White fruit on the palate a little richer and riper with a softer finish and slightly oaky. Drink from 2024-2026.

Here the equally restrained nose is dominated by a smoky petrol character along with background citrus nuances. There is slightly better volume and mid-palate density to the delicious middleweight flavors that possess a lovely texture and evident minerality on the very dry and lingering but not really austere finale. Lovely. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundClear pale lemon. An impression of density on the nose. This is much the most complete as it combines the extra fruit intensity of Champlots with more of a limestone minerality, so fleshy and fresh together. Very tasty! Drink from 2025-2028.

The vines are getting older which is bringing more precision as well as concentration. Three plots, one very old, the middle aged one improving. This is a very good example of the vineyard, with flesh on the bones whereas the flavours can be a little shallower this high on the hillside.

This comes from Les Travers du Marinot section. Fine pale primrose, a little more concentration while retaining the stricter character. Pure white fruit, fattening out just a little at the finish, a touch of liquorice, attractive and ripe enough.

Top of the vineyard. Second plot, was red, left fallow 6 years. There is a little more flesh to this without losing the basic Joseph Colin style which is more austere than most. Perhaps because of the youth of the vines the finish is not quite as long, but the wine has been beautifully put together. Very attractive to drink reasonably soon.

NB This cuvée will have a different name in USA market. It comes from 9 plots in seven lieux-dits so Joseph may choose Les 7 Terroirs. Pale lemon colour, a light reduction to the nose. Lime notes on the palate, very much a classically crisp St-Aubin, with modest flesh but fine persistence.

From two plots so now called Les Hauts de la Combe to bring in the names of the two lieux -dits. This has been bottled without fining or filtering. Pale colour, light yellow fruit, but again these are not high levels of ripeness. Very slight confection at the back but a good volume of fruit and excellent clean acidity.

Pale primrose, clearly more backward, still some fermentation aromas, good weight of course, excellent acidity, still so backward. I like the level of intensity though. Very long finish. Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825, and while they have been known for producing outstanding quality wines throughout this time, they are widely considered one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Since taking over from his father Francois, Erwan Faiveley has made a deliberate decision to emphasise freshness and purity of fruit rather than fruit extraction, and at times, excessive use of new oak. This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.
On the border of Puligny-Montrachet, this is a south-east facing plot with a mix of silt and stony soil. The site was once covered with hornbeam trees, 'charmes' in French, hence the name.

The 2018 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is an ample, creamy and super-expressive wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and minty notes all flesh out in a Chablis endowed with striking depth and resonance - all qualities that build into the long, beautifully persistent finish. This is one of the bigger premiers crus in the range, but it also retains terrific freshness and vibrancy.

A fresh and pure nose if mildly exotic nose offers up notes of white and yellow orchard fruit, melon and tidal pool. The lush and opulent but punchy medium-bodied flavors possess a seductively textured and dry finale thanks to the citrus-tinged acid spine. The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is a dense, spherical wine built on power and texture. Lemon confit, apricot, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile all build as this creamy, voluptuous Chablis shows off its vivid personality. Bright saline notes cut through all the richness, giving the wine energy and a sense of crystalline beauty that is not easy to express with words. Today, I find the 2018 just a bit closed. I won't be surprised if it is even better from bottle.

VinousHere too there is a discreet but still discernible dollop of wood surrounding the airy citrus, oyster shell and sea breeze-scented nose. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation in the context of the vintage before concluding in a powerful yet refined, focused and strikingly long finish. This too is really quite impressive.

VinousThis is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to overshadow the underlying fruit at present. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that culminate in a dry, saline and solidly persistent finish. James SucklingThe 2017 Chablis, due to be bottled in September, has a tightly wound, slightly chalky bouquet with hints of musk developing in the glass. This confers on the wine an austerity and a sense of reserve that are the signature of the great wines of Chablis. Yellow and white fleshed fruits like peach and apricot are revealed. In sunny years, these notes develop
towards concentrated fruits "confits" and quince. In cool years, the floral notes such as hawthorn offer the wine of this "climat" all its distinctiveness. 2023 Keller AbtsE Riesling Grosses GewachsRheinhessen, GERMANY$765. 00Bottle$9180.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
The Abtserde vineyard sits immediately above the old monastery site in Westhofen, on pure limestone soils with light marl. It is regarded as one of the estate's most finely detailed sites, producing wines defined by precision and minerality, and is among Keller's most limited bottlings.

From the Abtserde plot within the Brunnenhäuschen site in Westhofen, the 2023 Abts E Riesling GG is incredibly pure, deep and intense on the nose that is concentrated and chalky, with saline and lemony notes. Full-bodied, pure, fresh and saline on the palate, this is a highly complex and tight Riesling with a very intense, aromatic and structured finish. A great Riesling! Tasted as a sample in May this year. Drink 2025-2070.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abtserde Grosses Gewächs is from a site between Kirchspiel and Morstein with the high active limestone. The shy nose teases with immensely pure but tender lemon peel notes, still interspersed with reduction. More air adds lemon balm. The palate is a picture of slenderness, brightness, freshness and limestone coolness. Underneath that is salt, stone and immense juiciness. Zestiness reigns, bringing length, depth and extra dimensions of citrus radiance. This is luminous and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

The tonal scale starts to rise here to a higher note than in Morstein but also showing more obvious smoky/mineral reduction. Ripe, pure and lightly spicy citrus, becoming ever more fragrant with air. Morstein is the most historic of Keller's holdings, first documented in the 13th century and renowned for its active limestone and clay-marl composition. The vineyard's elevation and exposure give it a reputation for longevity and complexity, making it a cornerstone of Keller's dry Riesling portfolio.

From vines planted in 1944, the Westhofen 2023 Morstein Riesling GG opens intense and fine like a perfume, with wet chalk, lemon juice and yellow plum aromas. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs is made from 75-year-old vines higher up in the Morstein. Just a touch of reduction still swings on the nose, but underneath, white peach, lemon balm and chervil flirt enticingly. Later on, creamy lemon joins in. Smooth serenity, absolutely cooling depth and an almost zen-like calm define the palate. Lemon at the core is almost incidental to this luminous, cool, profound wine with impeccable purity, poise and freshness. The longer you consider this, the deeper it sinks into that limestone. This is a slender, contoured monument to tranquility. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comSomeone once described Keller's wines as the Puligny-Montrachet of Germany, and this one exemplifies that association. It’s not the grape variety that takes centre stage here, but the terroir – clay marl with limestone on a rocky subsoil. Everything comes together in perfect harmony: a silky texture, balanced ripeness, and a captivating flow. A hint of iodine mingles with citrus fruit, and the memory of this wine lingers far beyond its finish. Drink 2024-2055.

An even deeper note than in the Oberer Hubacker. Spicy, rich, open in citrus and smoky/herbal complexity. A little more obvious reduction here. Altogether a darker, deeper wine that the previous wines from limestone soils. Immense concentration and power, essence of Riesling from this site, which give a more savoury complexity and seems incapable of flirting with the taster. But the taste stays with you for ever. Picked at 31 hectoliters per hectare, the sample of the Dalsheimer 2023 Oberer Hubacker Riesling GG is deep and pure yet not ascetic on the nose that indicates ripe fruit with yeasty and saline notes. More green fruits here than in the Kirchspiel, a deeper tone, like going down a tonal scale from von der Fels to Kirchspiel to this wine. Stony/mineral dustiness. On the palate there's great depth and richness, the wine's feet planted more squarely on the ground than those of the Kirchspiel, but it still reaches up to the sky with purity of citrus fruit and intense freshness on the finish. From 60- to 70-year-old vines, the rare 2022 Riesling Westhofener Morstein GG Alte Reben shows a clear and finely chalky bouquet with delicate but juicy fruit and a touch of exoticism but also citrus notes. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Morstein is from 75-year-old vines that were field-grafted over to Riesling in 2009 (halt to Pinot Noir, half to Riesling). The nose is rather muted. Just a glimmer of lemon freshness shines, with a suspicion of reduction. The juicy, chalky palate expands somehow vertically into deep limestone chalkiness and inherent coolness. For now, there is just lemon. Everything else seems locked deep in that limestone freshness and cool profoundness. It will take time to allow the undoubted fruit to loosen itself from the austere stoniness and come to the surface. The extended finish comes with lemon zest and pith. (Bone-dry) Drink 2025-2050.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe concentrated power in this is fascinating. There seems to be a bit of everything: citrus, lemon zest and lemon balm, all dense and highly concentrated. In 2022, the good water retention of the heavy clay marl soils with layers of limestone ensured that the vines are adequately supplied and prevented the bitter notes typical of the vintage. Great concentration on the mid-palate, but the intensity only builds at the very long, energetic and wet stone finish. Doesn’t want to stop! Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comTank sample. Limestone soils. Apparently the stones used to build the Kellers' home come from this vineyard. Klaus Peter Keller's grandfather sat the Sprengmeisterprüfung (a test that allows you to use explosives) so that he could source the rocks for building.
Somehow 'darker' on the nose than the Kirchspiel. More earthy and spiced. Not as flirtatious, with a slight impression of smoky reduction, the herbal fumes of spontaneous fermentation that I did not sense on the Kirchspiel. Powerful, savoury, darker on the palate, too. Really savoury with a strong herbal aftertaste. Power and length but without the charm of Kirchspiel. Darker and more earthy. The same quality level as Kirchspiel but not as much to my personal taste. Drink 2026-2038.

2022 Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Grosses GewachsRheinhessen, GERMANY$480. 00Bottle$5760.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Keller's 2022 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel GG opens with a clear, elegant, dense and chalky nose with a ripe, intense fruit and notes reminiscent of iodine. Elegant, dense and chalky on the palate, with an intense, tightly woven and salty-savory finish, this is an excellent finessed Kirchspiel and very typical for its terroir. Drink 2026-2040.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs was harvested from vines planted in 1964. The nose is a cool, pure breeze of lemon balm and freshly cut, ripe lemon. The body is taut and tender, shimmering with ripe Mirabelle on the fluid, compact mid-palate. A fine phenolic web holds this together as the concentration seems to seep lemon-juice-like into the depth of cool limestone. This is driven and zesty, bone dry. The finish holds a shimmer of lemon and limestone with a frisson of seductive, riper stone fruit, very fine and elegant. (Bone-dry) Drink 2025-2050.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousA super-elegant, high-end, dry riesling with the combination of restrained ripeness and lively and subtle acidity that characterizes the best side of the 2022 vintage. The aromas at the front are very stone fruit-focused, but at the back it turns decisively in a citrusy direction and there the chalky minerality builds and builds. All this is deftly supported by fine tannins. Drink or hold.

On the nose, the classic blossom notes as well as the stony minerality that I associate with Kirchspiel’s limestone soils. Lime and peach fruit add both richness and freshness to the mid palate. This has a corset of acidity that holds the fruit in a tight framework but more power than in some years. A little bit of spice. Immense concentration without loss of its unique fragrance and lightness of foot. Really long. Mouth-watering finish. A wonderful pairing of elegant scentedness with persistence and intensity. Drink 2025-2035.

It would be no exaggeration to say Weingut Keller consistently produce the finest dry Rieslings in the world, a fact proven year after year since Klaus-Peter Keller took over the reins from his father in 2001. Along with his wife Julia, Klaus-Peter has continued to prioritise the quality of dry wine produced at the estate, and these are now some of the most sought after and collected wines on the planet.
The Riesling Trocken is such a perfect foray into Keller wines as it is always treated with the same meticulous care as their top releases. While 85% of Keller holdings are classified as 'Grand Cru', only 15% of their wines are labelled as such meaning a lot of premium fruit goes into the other releases including this fantastic wine. Jancis Robinson MW famously stated “If I had to choose one wine to show how great dry German Riesling can be I would choose a Keller Riesling.”
