Il Carpino sit on Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s winemaking ‘golden strip’ of Ponca-rich soil in Oslavia, right near the Slovenian border. Their Vigna Runc range uses fruit from younger vineyards, and the wines are made in a slightly more conventional way - skins for only a short time, with all ferments in temperature-controlled steel tanks, clarification and filtration before release. The wines are released relatively early and do not undergo malolactic fermentation, maintaining their crisp and flavoursome style.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Elevated lime and green apple skin scents infused with fresh Mediterranean herbs are followed by some cantaloupe and stony mineral notes. Ripe and well rounded across the palate yet possessing a zingy, vibrant feel, the palate features fleshy pear, lime, green apple skin and mango fruits over a wet slate and minerally saline laced back drop. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long aftertaste that exudes freshness, elegance and minerality.

Sitting above the walled city of Soave at the top of Mount Foscarino are the vineyards of Azienda Agricola Inama. In the 1960s, Giuseppe Inama began buying up small vineyard plots on this peak in the heart of the Soave Classico zone, and as a result, the Inama winery today owns most of the vineyards on Mount Foscarino. Giuseppe Inama saw the great potential of these old, traditional vineyards at a time when others were more intent on producing larger quantities in the plains for inexpensive exports. His son Stefano, who took over the winemaking duties in 1992, has continued to work tirelessly to realize the potential of these vineyards, working with some of the very best vineyard management consultants in the world to get Inama’s vineyards into the best possible shape.

Stefano Inama is one of those producers who embodies the respect for tradition but is constantly thinking and striving to do more and better and isn’t afraid to take risks. He spent a lot of time talking with long-time local growers about what Soave was like decades ago when it was one of the best-known whites in the world. From these discussions, he learned that Garganega seemed to respond well to some old-fashioned techniques such as longer skin contact and less sulfur usage. Accordingly, intervention during winemaking is now kept to a minimum. The grapes undergo a short maceration and gentle pressing, followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, and ultimately bottling with a minimum of fining and filtration. The winery has also conducted a great deal of research into clonal selection and canopy management with the goal of maximizing fruit concentration while retaining varietal typicity. In the final analysis, Inama has truly succeeded in combining ancient grape varieties, nearly forgotten winemaking practices, and modern technology to produce both white and red wines that are benchmarks for northeastern Italy.

2019 sees the introduction of the Inama I Palchi Foscarino Grande Cuvee Soave Classico. Based on a selection of micro-parcels from the terraces (palchi) of Foscarino, the concept is to craft a wine with utmost emphasis on purity. Fermentation takes place in barriques (60%) and big barrels (40%).

There’s incredible mineral presence here, from the nose right through to the finish. A aromatic mix of flint, tufo and wet-stone aromas, as well as heather and floral notes. Then, the palate finally introduces ripe peach and pineapple to this mineral carnival. Full-bodied, super-silky and almost syrupy texture with dense, ripe fruit and light phenolics. The long finish mixes stone-fruit and enough acidity to handle the same, huge bundle of rich, silky minerals. This is a special old-vine selection from the historic, volcanic Monte Foscarino vineyards. Quite unique in the Soave context, and showcasing one of the appellation’s top vineyard sites. Fermentation in a mix of barrel and oak cask. First vintage. Drink or hold.

100% Garganega from 30 year old vines. I love Soave. I always expect it to catch on more locally, it being so well suited to our food and climate. A simple pleasure for me, as such. Kind of like entry level Chablis in a way.
Golden colour. Apple and green pear, brine, chamomile and honeysuckle. It’s fleshy and flavoursome, but clean and ‘mineral’, weight is substantial, without being heavy. The green herb bite through waxy orchard fruit is most pleasant. Finish is articulate, with a dusting of fine chalky grip, fresh and firm. As a classico, this is top shelf. I think I’ll buy some. Drink 2019 - 2024+

    Inniskillin Reserve Riesling Icewine (375ml)
    Niagara Peninsula, CANADA
    $95. 00
    Bottle
    $1140.00 Dozen
    Notes sourced from Inniskillin

Excellent conditions in the 2015 growing year set the Icewine grapes up for success. With a few freeze/thaw occurrences throughout the winter months the sugar levels and flavour concentrations were at their peak just prior to the Icewine grape harvest. The consistent frigid weather allowed us to reach our optimum harvesting temperature which enables us to maintain our high quality standards with the desired sugar levels and acidities in good balance. January 4th, 2016 brought ideal temperatures of -10º C to begin Inniskillin’s thirty-second Icewine harvest. One of the quickest on record, Vineyard Director Gerald Klose and Winemaker Bruce Nicholson began early morning and finished picking all estate fruit and receiving all grower fruit by the end of the day January 5th.

This unique Canadian product was harvested at the height of Canada’s crisp winter. Naturally frozen on the vine and then picked when the temperature drops to a frigid -10°C. Only a few drops of concentrated nectar can be squeezed from each bunch. The juice is then slowly fermented to achieve a rich, specialty wine know as Icewine. This 2015 Riesling Icewine was fermented at a cool 15°C for 21 days until a perfect balance of sugar, alcohol and acidity remained.

Tasting notes: Aromatics of fresh orange, lemon, lime and spice . On the palate this rich and elegant Icewine boasts smooth texture and concentrated flavours of peach and apricot along with a hint of clove balanced by a crisp, lively acidity.Residual sugar 235 g/l.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave represents one of the longest examples of vinous lineage in the world, with the family making wines in the area since 1481. Now under the guidance of Gerard Chave and his son Jean-Louis, the pair draws on five centuries of expertise to craft each of their wines. While known for the enviable collection of prime plots on the hill of Hermitage, their other main skill is in precise blending each year to best express the region and vintage. The backbone of their red Hermitage is sourced from the steep, granite slope of the Les Bessards cru, and is essential for making the finest red each year. Likewise, the base for Chave’s heroic Hermitage Blanc is the plot of century-old Marsanne vines in their Péléat monopole, which provides rich and intense fruit without heaviness.

J.L. Chave Selection is the exclusive negociant label of Jean-Louis Chave, and represents a more accessible way to experience the wines of the Chave family. Mon Coeur Cotes-du-Rhone is a blend of excellent plots in Vinsobres, Visan, Buisson, and Estargues, while Silene Crozes-Hermitage is 50% estate Syrah and 50% purchased, and the white Crozes-Hermitage Sybele a blend of 60% Marsanne and 40% Roussane. Renowned Chablis producer J.Moreau & Fils have branched out from their traditional roots to produce this very affordable Chardonnay that’s very Chablisisque like. Vins de France is a relatively new appellation that allows winemakers to source grapes from different French regions and allows for a greater liberty in winemaking techniques.

At a fraction of the price of Chablis this delivers great value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with hints of green around the edges and a watery hue. The nose shows a good whiff of pear, lime and green apple aromas infused with fresh herbs over a stony mineral background. Nicely textured with a rounded pebble stone like feel in the mouth, fresh pear and lime flavours sit over a bed of garden herbs and wet slate. Finishes dry and minerally with refreshing acidity on the medium to long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

The 2007 Dizy-Corne Bautray is soft, silky and quite open. Lemon peel, mint, white flowers and white pepper are some of the notes that give the 2007 its distinctive brightness and energy. Equally polished on the palate, the 2007 is exceptionally silky and finessed in its tactile impression. A wine of classiness and total understatement, the 2007 should drink well for at least another 5-10 years, perhaps more. There is good brightness in the glass, but the wine’s structure is very much medium in body. One of the things that stands out most is the silkiness and nearly imperceptible feel of the bubbles, especially as the wine opens up in the glass. Disgorged January, 2016. No Dosage. Drink 2017 - 2027.

From a plot of chardonnay planted in 1960, this has very impressive focus, power and concentration. Smells of chalk, stones and an array of citrus in the lemon/lime/grapefruit zone. Very fresh. The palate's fleshy, pristine, focused and really lithe with juicy lemon citrus flavours in addition to impressive depth and drive. Love the stony, mineral and toasted-almond finish. Brilliant Champagne. Drink now and through to 2022 and beyond.

Disgorged in November 2017 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, the NV Extra Brut Cuvée No. 737 Dégorgement Tardif, based on the 2009 vintage, is showing beautifully, bursting with aromas of ripe apples, white flowers, Meyer lemon, clear honey, walnuts and warm biscuits. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and complex, with a fleshy and textural core, lively acids and chalky dry extract. Drink 2019 - 2033.

The late-disgorged 737 has praline and creme-brulee aromas with a thread of bread and white stones. The palate is nicely compressed and delivered in a smoothly rendered array of red berries and creamy peach and almond flavors. Drink now.

Cuvee No. 741 is based on the 2013 vintage. An excellent frothy white mousse dissipates to reveal a gold tinged straw coloured base that’s threaded by an exceptionally fine and persistent bead. Heady aromas of citrus, toast and yeasty lees blend with dried honey, almonds and baked pear. Fresh and vibrant yet with an underlying oiliness to the mouthfeel the palate features a rich flavour profile of citrus fruits, toasty yeast lees, dried honey, almonds and traces of minerality. Dry mouth watering finish with a long citrus, almond and toasty lees laced finish.

The Cuvée No. 741, based on the 2013 vintage, is quite pretty. Complex, nuanced and multi-dimensional in feel, the 741 is beautifully layered in the glass. In this release, the Pinot Noir is especially expressive and gives the wine a measure of textural breadth that is unusual for a young 700-series Champagne. Soft contours and a host of toasty, resonant flavors give the 741 its distinctive feel. Best of all, the 741 will drink well upon release. Disgorged June 2017. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Drink 2018-2028.

A discreet application of wood easily allows the aromas of petrol straw and pear to be appreciated. There is more richness and volume to the nicely textured flavors that possess reasonably good depth and persistence if not quite the same punch.

Pale, bright yellow. Distinctly more soil-driven than the basic village Meursault, with its apple and spice flavors lifted by a calcaire element. A step up in intensity and spicy concentration as well, with apple and spice flavors framed by ripe acidity and enlivened by mineral verve. With less frost here, the estate made a bit more than 30 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine comes across as more energetic than the basic village bottling.

A light, elegant and refreshing Sancerre.

The Roger family have practised their trade in and around village of Bué since the early 17th century. Jean-Max Roger took the reins in the early 1970s and expanded the estate's Sancerre holdings from 4 hectares to its current 26. Beginning in 2004, two of his three sons, Etienne and Thibault, came back to work at the estate, ensuring this fine maker continues as a passionate, quality focused, family business.

The family's vineyards within the Sancerre appellation are located in the communes of Bué, Sancerre, and the hamlets of Amigny, Crézancy and Vinon. These plantings include three of the most famous vineyards - Le Grand Chemarin, Le Chêne Marchand and La Poussie - made up of “caillottes” (small calcified stones) “terres blanches” (maritime lime and clay soils like those found in Chablis) and some "griottes" (softer calcified stones). "Les Caillottes" is as the name suggests, the selection of grapes from the Caillottes terroirs on the estate, which have made the Sancerre wines so famous around the world.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a light greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. Lime top notes are followed by some grassiness, dried herbs and green apple. Light with an elegant mouthfeel the palate has flavours of lime and green apple intermixed with some grassy dried herb like characters followed by a touch of minerality on the back palate. Crisp dry finish. Aftertaste of green apple, lime and dried herbs.

Sancerre and Pouilly Fume without the price tag !

In recent years the wines of Menetou Salon, to the west of Sancerre, have enjoyed plenty of attention from sommeliers and journalists in search of new vinous pleasures. Thankfully, these fantastic wines are no longer considered "inside knowledge". To better grasp the appeal of Menetou Salon, think Sancerre or Pouilly Fume without the price tag, and you then understand why a following has developed the world over.
"Le Charnay" from Jean Max Roger grabbed our attention after the 2010 vintage won the favour of the New York Times tasting panel, praising this particular cuvee as the highlight of a line up including the top names in Sauvignon Blanc from the Central Loire Valley.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a tinge of green around the edges and watery hue. Ripe lime and green apple aromas are followed by a hint of asparagus with some fresh herb end notes. The palate shows slightly more concentration and texture than the Les Caillottes Sancerre with flavours of lime, a touch of green apple, spicy herbs and mineral. Clean crisp dry finish. Medium to long aftertaste of lime, spicy herbs and mineral.

"Cuvée G.C." is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes harvested predominantly in “Le Grand Chemarin", with some material from neighbouring terroirs with similar characteristics. These stoney, clay-limestone based soils known as "caillottes" cover steep slopes that enjoy southerly to south-eastern exposures. Wines from these areas are elegant, lifted and show great finesse.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish highlights around the edges and a watery hue. The nose is not quite as forthcoming as the Domaine Nozay Sancerre displaying herbaceous grassy characters, asparagus and citrus scents followed by some faint dried herbs and spice end notes. Light and not as texturally full as the Nozay but fresher the palate features flavours of herbaceous grassy characters, dried herbs, asparagus, citrus and spice. Clean dry finish with fresh acidity. Aftertaste of citrus, grassy herbaceous characters, dried herbs, asparagus and spice.

From ten small parcels of 20-60 year old vines. Les Tremblot, ("more Puligny in character, as the soil is argileous," says Jean-Louis); Les Meix, Les Levrons (more rounded wine for there are more stones and gravel here and it is not so heavy), Corvée des Vignes and Les Reuchaux. These small vineyard holdings are all just below the premier cru’s close to the village and cover the diversity of Puligny from north to south. Just 20% new oak for this wine which always shows excellent balance and drinking pleasure from an early age.
