From slate and porphyry soils, the 2016 Nahe Riesling Norheimer Dellchen "GG" is very pure, precise and mineral on the elegant, subtle nose, where ripe seed fruit aromas are displayed. Very sensual! Full-bodied, rich and round, this is a highly elegant, intense and dense Riesling with a persistent finish. Very aromatic and sensual, but it needs some time to gain even more finesse.

Non-showy nose – very discreet actually with light floral notes. Solid mouthful of still-quite-chewy earthy fruit. The opposite of exhibitionistic. A slow burner?

Deep nose with stacks of spice plus flinty and leesy complexity. The ripe stone fruit character emerges more and more with each swirl of the glass. A generous mouthful of extremely harmonious dry riesling. A touch of fine tannin deftly supports the finish. A good two-thirds fermented in stainless steel, the remainder in large neutral oak. The 2021 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben offers a clear, beautifully refined and flinty bouquet of ripe and elegant Riesling fruit spiced with stony splinters. Lush and refined on the palate, this is a very elegant, saline and textured Riesling with enormous salinity in the mouth-watering, rich and intense finish. Definitely the finest GG of the vintage here. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. To be bottled in October. Drink 2023 - 2050.

From Permian rhyolite, the 2021 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben opens up into a nose making you believe that you can smell texture because this sports wonderful notes of russet pear peel. The palate adds lovely notions of pepper to a body that has a smooth but concentrated texture. There is such limpidity of flavor, such charm, such elegance. A super-bright version of lemon acidity highlights it all. Beautiful and echoing with exquisite length. (Dry). Drink 2025-2050.

Tasted as a cask sample in Wiesbaden in August 2021, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben offers a very intense and beautifully spicy, slatey nose. Fairly straightforward fragrance of fresh apple, pear and citrus aromas. The fruit is fresh and vibrant on the palate and well supported by citrusy acidity as well as a marked spicy piquancy. Starts off deceptively light on the palate, but is beginning to show greater depth as the flavour goes on. Spice is another trademark of Ernie’s Grosse Gewächse, and the Sonnenuhr has plenty. Drink 2022-2030.

The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves smoky and flinty at first before it reveals its very refined and finely aromatic nose of tangerine, vineyard peach, Conference pear, dried white flowers, and almond. The wine is delicately juicy and elegant on the smooth rather than bone-dry palate. The finish manages to bring the right amount of freshness as zesty elements and spices kick in. A hint of tartness in the after-taste still needs to integrate before this beautiful wine will show its best. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2020 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben is pure, deep and salty on the remarkably clear, precise and complex nose. Full-bodied and juicy, this is a round and fruity, not all too dry Würzgarten that is stunningly pure, finessed and tensioned for this complicated Mosel vintage. Highly promising. On the nose the fragrance of ripe apple and pear is complemented by the Würzgarten’s unique spicy aroma. This also applies to the palate, where the initially straightforward delivery of sweet and sour fruit flavours are given an injection of lemon zest and ginger spice, to add an additional dimension to refine the overall expression. The 2020er Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Unterst and Oberst Pichter, Maxberg, and Layenhaus sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. It offers a beautifully complex and superbly refined and aromatic nose of cassis, almond cream, William’s pear, tangerine, orange, and spices. The wine is superbly playful on the palate, where its light juicy and fruity texture is wrapped into a blanket of spices. The finish is focused, long, and pure. Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

The 2014 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (AP #20) offers a nice flinty flavor intermixed with ripe Riesling aromas. Racy and piquant on the palate, but also rich and very juicy, with the sweetness well masked by the piquant and racy nature. Brown spices, vanilla and lime zest accent the tangy fresh apple fruit of this buoyant yet mouth-filling and subtly creamy bottling. Significant residual CO2 adds to the stimulation of a juicy, judiciously sweet finish. I find the delicacy and clarity of the corresponding Kabinett marginally more appealing today, though this Spätlese should become more interesting with time and hold its allure longer. Touches of exotic spice and crushed minerals lend complexity to sun-kissed peach and melon flavors in this medium-sweet Riesling. It's punchy and spry, full of high-toned acidity and lift, but finishes long, lean and elegant. It's youthful and exuberant now, but should continue to meld beautifully through at least 2027.

Framboise and strawberry distillates, lime peel and wet stone inform an ethereal nose. There is some of the same delightfully invigorating impression of fresh, seedy red berries as in the as-yet unbottled “regular” 2018 Grosses Gewächs, a further demonstration that extended time in cask (this spent two years there) need by no means sap Loosen Grosse Gewächse of primary juiciness, animation or invigoration. In fact, the energy that this bottling projects is quite tightly wound. Alkaline, saline and kelp-like notes serve for intrigue and saliva-inducement on a tongue-tingling finish. The mineral and marine elements here are perceived more as a suffusion, and there is, for now at least, not the sense of transparency projected by the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. It offers a breathtaking, undercooled, and superbly complex nose of aniseed herbs, smoke, spices, almond cream, honeyed yellow peach, muscade, quince, and fine buttery elements. The wine reveals a great creamy texture and plenty of superbly playful fruits wrapped into plenty of spices on the palate. This feeling carries over right into the hugely long and focused finish. The wine is still tight in the aftertaste but already hints at great refreshing elements of tangerine, minty herbs, and above all spices. Drink 2024-2040.

Sea breeze, wet stone and moss intriguingly greet the nose, joined by site-typical hints of vanilla and apple. The polished, subtly creamy palate features animatingly youthful, juicy apple and lime, and the lingering finish is admirably transparent to myriad nuances of a mineral, mossy and lichen-like sort. This wine’s combination of sensual allure with head-scratching intrigue delectably substantiates Loosen’s notion that his Grosses Gewächs could be improved upon by delaying the bottling of selected fuders for a second year or longer. And my intuition, like his, is that this approach should also conduce to longer bottle life, a contention that recent re-tasting of the vintage 2012 Reserves seems to support. Drink 2020 - 2030.

From volcanic soils, the 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben is beautifully clear, fresh and subtle on the precise and highly finessed bouquet of slate, iodine and herbal scents. The warm and elegant Riesling fruit intertwined with very fine herbal notes represents the very best of this exceptional grand cru in its original, much smaller size. Almost entirely sourced from the Urglück, this is a lush and intense, enormously powerful yet restrained and slatey Würzgarten GG with crystalline acidity that leads to a long, intense and still slightly astringent finish with refreshing lemon features. Apple, pear and more than a hint of spice delight the olfactory perception, although there’s also still a little yeasty exuberance of youth. Very viscous on the palate. Juicy stone fruit makes the first call, but is getting caught up by a cool stony minerality towards the finish.

The 2019 Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG Alte Reben comes from two very old plots adjacent the Prälat (the upper part of the former original Treppchen and the lower Herzlay) that have never been replanted since long before World War I. It shows a clear, intense yet subtle and deep, highly complex but also refined bouquet of very fine red slate and herbal aromas as well as perfectly clear and elegant Riesling fruits. Silky textured, highly finessed and perfectly balanced on the palate, this is a very intense and juicy, enormously long and concentrated yet finessed and mouthwatering Treppchen with the crystalline grip of broken slate and the intensity and complexity of biblical vines in a great terroir. A charming fragrance combines floral and herbal with aromas of ripe yellow fruit and a hint of earthy minerality. On the palate the fruit of peach and pear takes the initiative, but is well balanced by cool mint and fine nuances of spice with aniseed the most prominent.

Delicious red apple and fresh lime fruits decorate the mouth underpinned by racy acidity. Subtle notions of honeysuckle, light infusions of orange blossom and a spritzy minerality make an appearance on the back half. Finishes slightly off dry, zesty and long.

"One of the finest young vintages I have had the pleasure to taste"
    - John Gilman, A View From The Cellar

As far as German Riesling goes, there have been a few contenders for vintage of the century in the last 20 years, yet not every region succeeded in these years. However the experts all agree that 2015 is the real deal, the best since 1971 and 1975, and a vintage destined to become legendary in the years to come.

"Kabinett is something the Mosel can do like no others and there is plenty of gorgeous Kabinett to please lovers of playful yet deep Riesling in 2015!!"
    - Jean Fisch & David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines

It's also become clear that while there are some standout wines from newer producers in 2015, the great Estates made great wine this year, while good Estates made good wine. And for lovers of elegant, floral, yet wonderfully intense Riesling there are few greater examples than those of Dr. Loosen in the Mosel.

The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years, and consistently produce some of the top wines across each Pradikat level. Featured here are three of their Kabinett level wines, the off-dry style that the Mosel region excels at like no other. While these wines display excellent early drinking appeal, the balance and intensity will reward those able to hide them away in the cellar for a few more years.

Brilliant pale straw colour with tinges of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted red apple aromas combine with citrusy honeysuckle notes over pear, lime juice and faint cinnamon spice. Possessing the greatest flavour intensity of the trio along with a shade more weight the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of ripe limes and apples carefully laced with honeysuckle infusions over some pear and citrusy mineral characters. Off dry with finely tuned acidity leading to a precise finish of ripe limes, pears, honeysuckle and citrusy mineral.

The 2016er Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG is made from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. The wine develops a great nose of mirabelle, tangerine, brown sugar, mint, flowers, whipped cream, and fine spices. The wine proves rather firm and structured on the palate and leaves a fully spicy feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a fruity and elegantly light style. Drink 2021-2031.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer - Mosel Fine Wines

Apple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.

Animating and vividly bright for an Auslese, this displays an impressive concentration of fresh strawberry and kiwi laced with lime. Honeysuckle adds alluring inner-mouth perfume, and a glossy, subtly creamy texture serves as the perfect foil for the wine’s bracing brightness and infectious juiciness. Where the corresponding Sonnenuhr conveyed an extremely subtle impression of botrytis, here I can scarcely find any such impression – not that I’m complaining! The vibrant finish delivers tingling brightness of citrus, an invigorating crunch of strawberry seeds, wafting florality and a faint slick of quince jelly to accompany its irrepressible fresh fruitiness. This product of November 30 and December 5 pickings at multiple sites (Erdener Herrenberg prominent among them) delivers a slightly sweet-sour meld of green apple and apple candy with glazed pineapple. It displays prominent glycerol and considerable sense of stuffing to help buffer its blazing, penetrating, tangy brightness, and finishes with penetrating if edgy and only moderately complex persistence. I would permit it a year or two to settle itself, but given Eiswein’s caprices, I wouldn’t lose track of any bottles I cellared. Drink 2019 - 2025.

The 2016er Riesling Eiswein was made from fruit harvested at approx. 120° Oechsle in Bernkastel, Erden and Ürzig on both November 29 and November 30, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (143 g/l). It develops a beautifully zesty and fresh nose of candied grapefruit, orange jelly, and spices, joined by riper notes of quince, pear puree, and almond cream after some airing. The wine is superbly balanced and refined on the palate, and leaves a rather pure and smooth feel in the very long and light finish. The sweetness still dominates the acid core in the after-taste at this stage, but this should change after a few years of cellaring. Drink 2024-2036.

Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, southfacing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. The "Sundial of Wehlen" is one of the greatest vineyards in the Middle Mosel.

100% Riesling from blue Devonian slate soils and ungrafted vines with an average age of 60 years. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, according to strict German environmental regulations. Yields were 50 hl/ha. Selectively hand-harvested grapes underwent cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and traditional Fuder barrels. Half of the juice was fermented with natural yeasts, the other half with cultured yeasts. Fermentation was arrested by chilling

This bracing, but juicy and barely off-dry riesling has a slew of red apple, spring blossoms and fresh herb character. Long, very crisp finish with plenty of depth. Drink or hold.

Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett is a fruity-styled wine with a subtle nose of peach, citrusy fruits, herbs, and a hint of creaminess and apricot blossom. The wine proves incredibly playful and precise on the palate, where its creamy side is wrapped into beautiful acidic and fruity elements. The finish is simply stunningly pure, focused, and silky. A kick of acidity then provides the right freshness and elegance to the aftertaste. This Kabinett is a huge success! Drink 2029-2041.

Very striking nose of tangerine with touches of orange blossom, fresh tarragon and mint. Juicy and vibrant on the surprisingly generous palate. Long, zesty finish with a touch of citrus pith character underlining the very animating acidity. Drink or hold.

Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate. Drink 2024-2042.

Complex, red-apple and red-plum nose with delicate spice. Very ripe, but retains noble discretion, the succulence married to great structure. Long, creamy finish, in which the grape sweetness is already beautifully integrated. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves rather restrained and even reduced at first and needs quite some time to reveal some ripe, luscious, and very complex scents of pineapple, orange peel, mango, pear, a touch of quince, blackberry, almond cream, and a whiff of honey already lurking in the background. The wine proves highly fruity, smooth, and yet delicate on the palate but reveals a more spicy and herbal side in the focused, persistent, and intense finish. Sweetness still dominates the aftertaste of this wine with Auslese presence. This beauty will really only shine in a decade. Drink 2033-2060+.

The 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese A.P. #6 reflects numerous parcels and pickings with largely healthy fruit but slight botrytis influence. Quince and white peach hover between fresh and jellied, overlain with heady, musky perfume of peony and narcissus. But there are also elements of honeydew and mint – especially on the polished, delicate palate – to supply the cooling side to flavors that is familiar from other Egon Müller 2020s. The superbly sustained finish soothes yet invigorates and refreshes, with musky and chamomile floral billowing, cooling traces of mint, and lightly stimulating hints of wintergreen and cress. There is no question that this wine has an especially serious future, even by exalted Scharzhof standards. Drink 2021-2050.

Spring-blossom, honeysuckle and gardenia aromas pour from the glass of this Spätlese, which effortlessly marries mangosteen and passion-fruit ripeness with serious concentration and great finesse. Racy acidity drives the very long, precise finish. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still quite reduced at first (smoke, marine herbs and sea breeze, and bacon driven scents) before gradually revealing its amazingly complex nose made of spices, white flowers, vineyard peach, cassis, mint lozenge, orange peel, apricot, and star fruit. The wine proves intense and beautifully focused on the intense yet impeccably balanced palate. Despite all the intensity and complexity at play, the wine remains stunningly fresh and light-footed right into the finish. The minute-long aftertaste is all about deep citrusy fruits and spices. This Spätlese is an incredible success! Drink 2030-2060.
