Sylvain Pataille has been instrumental in raising the profile of Marsannay since founding his domaine in 1999. Farming around 17 hectares biodynamically, he works with a remarkable diversity of sites, from old-vine Pinot Noir to rare Aligoté Doré and Pinot Beurot, and is known for sensitive, terroir-driven élevage with a high proportion of whole bunches. His work has been central to the ongoing push for premier cru recognition in Marsannay, and his wines are frequently cited as reference points for the appellation. They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

En Auvonnes is found on the lower part of the slope, closer to the D974 on the border of Marsannay and Couchey. Here, the dense marl soil is littered with cailloux calcaires, which brings a positive reductive character to the wine. Pataille works with 0.10-hectare of beautiful Aligoté Doré planted by his grandfather, Armand, in the 1930s. Pépé is shorthand for grandfather in French.

    Other Reviews....
Produced from a small plot west of Marsannay village in the lieu-dit En Auvone that was originally owned by Pataille’s grandfather, who planted it in the 1930s, this wine is a beautiful introduction to Pataille’s single-vineyard Aligoté range. Grapefruit and apricot fruit with structure and power on the palate, but enough pleasant, lemony brightness to bring balance. Organic. Drink 2024-2035.

A classic aligoté nose reflects equal amounts of citrus character on the Granny Smith apple, spice and suggestions of floral wisps. The succulent, round and very punchy medium-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract as well as minerality that seems to build on the youthfully austere bitter lemon-tinged finale. This is superb and absolutely worth your interest if you like aligoté. Drink through 2028+.

The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté Auvonnes Au Pépé, named after the lieu-dit on marn soils, has one of my favorite bouquets from Pataille: endearing lemon thyme, pear, and white peach aromas blossom in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp bead of acidity. It is lightly spiced, but what makes this wine is the lip-smacking salinity on the finish. Very more-ish. Drink 2025-2034.

Mid lemon and lime with a salty white fruit on the nose. Clean white orchard fruit on the palate with a slaty note behind. Good length. May need longer to express itself fully, at which point it could leap ahead of its stable mates. Drink from 2025-2030.

This is the only blended Aligoté in the Pataille range. Half the fruit is harvested from old-vine Aligoté Doré in Marsannay itself, including fruit from Champ Forey on limestone and gravel, and the balance coming from Échevronne in Hautes Côtes, above Corton. The average age of the vines across the two parcels is more than 50 years, and although this is Pataille’s entry-level Aligoté, you can immediately feel the depth and energy born from the old vines and low yields. The wine ferments naturally in stainless steel before maturation in old foudre and then goes back to stainless steel for four months before bottling.

A very aligoté nose of green apple, citrus and spice introduces racy, delicious and softly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a dry, clean and refreshing finish that offers better depth and persistence than is typical for the genre. Worth a look. Drink through 2025+.

The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté, mostly aged in foudres nowadays, was the only cuvée that had been bottled by the time of my visit. With light apple blossom and waxy aromas in the glass, the well-balanced palate is fresh, finishing with a touch of lemongrass. Enjoy over the next couple of years. Drink 2024-2030.

In bottle. Mid lemon yellow. A fine tangy fruit on the nose, crunchy and classy, a little bit of almond paste, very long. Just a lovely example, straightforward by Sylvain’s standards but so persistent. Drink from 2024-2027.

A classic aligoté nose reflects notes of green apple, spice and a variety of citrus nuances that are picked up by the racy, intense and delicious middleweight flavors and particularly so on the very dry, moderately austere and sneaky long finish. This should drink well shortly after release. Drink through 2024+.

Offering up notes of mint, lemon oil, pear and grapefruit zest, the 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté is medium-bodied, with a satiny attack, tangy acids and a taut, somewhat compact profile. Drink 2023 - 2033.

The 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté has a pretty nose with light white flower and citrus notes. The palate is well balanced with a spicy opening, fine acidity with a touch of green lemon on the finish. Fine. Drink 2023-2028.

Sylvain wants an accessible entry point with this wine, made mostly from 70 year old vines and kept one year in big wood. Not fallen clear yet. The nose is a little bit restrained, but the palate is classical Aligoté with a lime and greengage touch, but more flesh than in the past. Lovely aftertaste. Tasted: November 2021.

This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.

    Other Reviews....
From Les Larreys picked late because it did not look good earlier. Mid yellow but cloudy as it is on all its lees. Quite a powerful nose, not so much finesse, sucrosity behind. Passion fruit and mango dominate, though the wine is saved by good acidity behind. Interesting to see if the heaviness wins out or a second winter’s elevage livens this up. Tasted: November 2021.

Here the nose is markedly reduced, even slightly skunky and needs to be racked. By contrast there is good freshness and energy to the succulent and relatively energetic flavors that possess an attractive texture though the reduction shows up on the finish. Note that my projected range assumes that this will clean up appropriately. Drink from 2023+.

The 2019 Marsannay Blanc is a blend of several parcels. This showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is quite fat and juicy, good weight and an attractive waxy texture, but I feel it will need 18-24 months in bottle to get going. Drink 2023-2032.

Solely aged in stainless steel tanks, this Macon has a brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Lifted top notes of fresh nectarine and citrus are intermeshed with light honeysuckle and wet stone notes. Fleshy ripe nectarine and white peach flavours dominate the palate with infusions of honeysuckle and wet stone on the lively finish. There’s a refreshing purity of fruit to this wine with good volume in the mouth complimented by plenty of vibrant acidity. Medium to long aftertaste.

While based in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Taupenot-Merme has collection of prime vineyards across both the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune. A significant proportion of their 13 hectare holdings are in premier and grand cru plots, including the grands crus Clos des Lambrays, Charmes-Chambertin, Corton-Rognet and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Much of these vineyards contain old vines which have been supplemented with newer plantings from massale selections of their strongest vines.

Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot is in charge of winemaking, aided by his sister Virginie. Organic farming has been practiced since 2001, and once harvested grapes are 100% de-stemmed before a cold soak and indigenous fermentation. Oak use is also sympathetic with only 25% new oak used for the village wines and up to 40% for the grand and premier cru. While the wines can carry a healthy degree of richness, they are always balanced by freshness so as to be a pure and faithful representation of their origin.

The Taupenot-Merme family owns 0.61Ha of village-designated Chardonnay vines spread across three plots in Auxey-Duresses, with about half of the vines planted in 1957 and the other half in 2009.

Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a faint glimmer of green to the outskirts and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe pear and red apple are overlaid with dried honey, quince and spice notes. Pretty perfume shows light floral notes, whiffs of pear and small red berries, touch of honey. Palate is soft and sumptuous but held fresh (when cold) with bright acidity under the oily flow of pear, ginger and cinnamon spice and sundry light honeyed notes. Opulent sort of wine but with vitality on its side. Drink 2019-2021.

This white blend comes from an 18-hectare plot at 300 meters of altitude, purchased in 2016. This piece of land has a cooler orientation than the rest of the Estate - east and south–east facing - and is mostly composed of sandy marl. As it is less hot, the site is mostly used to emphasize the freshness of white and rosé wines, as historically this terroir was considered the reference for Bandol in these two colours.

Primarily Clairette (60%) and Ugni Blanc (30%), with bits of Bourboulenc, Marsanne and Rolle, the 2021 Bandol Blanc was still in tank when I visited early last year. It presents a striking juxtaposition of ripe pears and honeyed richness with brighter notes of fresh lime juice on the nose and medium-bodied palate, finishing with a sense of plush richness balanced by mouthwatering citrus zest and brine. Jean-Louis Trapet of Domaine Trapet in Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy and his Alsatian born wife Andree run this certified organic and biodynamic estate in Alsace. This Riesling is sourced from less than 1 hectare of vines grown on a hillside overlooking the village of Riquewihr with an East Southeast orientation. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel before being aged for 10-12 months in neutral French oak and concrete eggs.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus scents meld into lemon butter, bees wax, toast and flinty wet stone notes. Rich and voluminous on the palate, generously textured lime and citrus fruits are underpinned by fresh zippy acidity. Subtle notions of bees wax, lemon butter, wet stone, delicate tertiary kerosene and smoky mineral characters ensue. Outstanding depth finishing long and concentrated with an oily like feel.

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. The domain was created in 1977, when Gérard Valette was one of the first in the area to leave the local cooperative and start bottling his own wine. After completing wine training, son Philippe joined in 1990 and then decided to convert the family's vineyards to organic farming, using biodynamic methods since 1992.

The Valette's are known for their specific style, wines raised with thorough lees-contact and without racking. They have remained true to this style of winemaking since the 1950s. It is a sort of family tradition that requires accuracy as well as painstaking detail knowledge of the indigenous yeasts and the wine’s proneness to develop reductive flavours. If the estate's wines through the late 1990s were simply powerful, textural examples of high-quality white Burgundy, the wines being released today belong in a category of their own. Complex and sapid, these are fascinating wines although you should be prepared to find wines that are quite different from any of the Valettes' neighbours. Anyone who appreciates the Jura bottlings of Jean-François Ganevat or the Thomas Pico Chablis wines is likely to love them.

Valette's Macon Chaintre Vieilles Vignes hails from vines over 65 years old, and is aged in 80% in oak and 20% in tank for a full two and a half years after the harvest before being bottled without sulphur. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Valette's wines often benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Pouilly-Fuissé produces the grandest wines of the Mâconnais and its best wines can age for many years. Average age in Valette's plots is over 60 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. Aromas of minty green apples and citrus oil introduce the 2017 Mâcon-Villages, a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy wine that's bright and layered, concluding with a saline finish. This bottling comes from comparatively young vines and is vinified and matured in tank. The 2017 is quite easy to understand and makes a great introduction to the wines of this fascinating and idiosyncratic domaine.

The lovely 2014 Pouilly-Fuissé offers up an inviting bouquet that mingles notes of waxy citrus rind and clear honey with nuances of marzipan, mandarin and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. Just bottled, this is the latest release of Valette's regular Pouilly-Fuissé.

Le Clos Reyssié is an east facing vineyard with 65 year old vines, and the elevage here was 10 years in barrels, topped up four times a year. The nose is explosive with varied oxidative notes showing curry, candied citrus, saffron and salted butter caramel. The mouthfeel is ample and very complex, with a graceful fluidity. Finally phenomenal length, beautiful tension and lovely balance. A wine to savour and one that will keep.

The Pouilly Fuisse Clos de Monsieur Noly Vieilles Vignes is an incredibly special wine that defies convention as it is elevaged in barrel for 12 years topped up four times a year. It's pure South facing vineyard with 65 year old vines. It has a luminous yellow gold/amber colour and very complex nose of confit citrus, spices, cherries, and honeyed almonds - wonderfully complex. This is a massively expansive, beautifully balanced, and pure wine coats the senses. It is hugely complex, concentrated, and simply fascinating.

Vinified and bottled without sulfur, Valette's 2015 Mâcon-Chaintré Vieilles Vignes responds well to oxygen—in fact, it's best decanted—and the more air it sees, the less wild it seems. Opening in the glass with aromas of buttered orchard fruit, orange rind, smoke and nutmeg, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny-textured and muscular, with lively acids, chewy structuring extract and a long, sapid finish. This is an intensely characterful Mâcon-Chaintré that exemplifies the last two decades of reflection and evolution chez Valette. Any readers who find parallels with the wines of Jean-François Ganevat will be interested to know that Valette told me that the two producers are working with fruit that grows in the same strata of Jurassic limestone—though there are clearly technical and philosophical parallels too.

Vincent Dancer runs a tiny operation based in chassagne-Montrachet where he crafts his wines from five hectares of well-situated vineyards. The winery is small even by the standards of Burgundy, and despite Dancer’s reclusive nature, the wines are well known to a small circle of restaurateurs and wine-lovers who reliably take their miniscule allocation year after year. Vincent is quietly individualistic, creating his own lean, bright, and savory style of wines, trusting his instincts and experience to make the best possible wine in his own way.

The nose speaks subtly of green pear, lemon zest and peppery green leaves. A slender, crisp palate unites all these notions, with fine freshness and a lovely herbal zing on the dry, appetizing finish. The lemon zestiness rings long.

Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s most important grape variety making up approximately one third of the country’s total production. In Wachau in general and at Domäne Wachau in particular, this percentage is even higher at more than 50%. A multiplicity of styles can be produced from the Grüner Veltliner grape, a prime example being those under the Federspiel classification which have a maximum alcohol content of 12.5%.

Green apple, a little white pepper and herb, sour mango. Juicy, big burst of green apple and spice, fine powdery texture, light acid crunch with a yeasty weightiness, good finish. Wholly satisfying and classic expression of Grüner. I’m having a nice little glass of it now. Drink 2019-2023.

Here too the nose is elegant, pure and layered but with more floral and spice nuances adding breadth to the cooler and more restrained aromas. There is both excellent intensity and density to the mineral-driven flavors that terminate in a bone-dry, sneaky long and balanced finale. This too is really very good. Drink from 2027+.

Consisting of roughly equal parts Montmains, Butteaux and Forêts (the three sous-climats of Montmains), the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains offers up aromas of crisp green apple, white flowers, bee pollen and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's taut and precise, concluding with a saline finish. Drink 2023 - 2045.

From all three sections of the vineyard as usual. Racy lemon colour. Pure crystalline nose, very little reduction, very classical left bank Chablis, very intense but neither heavy nor exotic. The kimmeridgian is speaking underneath a graceful layer of flesh. Fruit and stones both keep coming back at the finish.
