2020 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Blanc
This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.
From Les Larreys picked late because it did not look good earlier. Mid yellow but cloudy as it is on all its lees. Quite a powerful nose, not so much finesse, sucrosity behind. Passion fruit and mango dominate, though the wine is saved by good acidity behind. Interesting to see if the heaviness wins out or a second winter’s elevage livens this up. Tasted: November 2021.
