Aja Donica is a blend of Vermentinu and an ancient local varietal, Bianco gentile, and is the most crystalline and pure expression in the range. Bursting with white florals and acacia honey, flavours gravitate towards candied lemon, green melon and a gentle sweet spice conclusion. As with all the wines from Vaccelli, perfect balance is the hallmark here.

Campo di Magna is a bottling of 100% Vermentinu from a plot of the same name. Of the single site whites, Campo di Magna is the most giving and characterful, straddling the line of powerful citrus fruit supported by a taut mineral core. This is a white wine of immense presence, and deserving of time in the cellar to blossom.

    $2700.00 Dozen

Such is the detail and balance of fruit on offer, the 100% Vermentinu bottling of Chioso Novo immediately announces itself. Displaying a harmonious blend of pithy citrus and more generous melon fruit, there is a core of wet stone mineral flecks and a crunchy spice conclusion that is thoroughly appealing. Winemaking is equally well matched, adding to the sense of completeness and harmony.

Domaine de Villaine, nestled in the village of Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise, is renowned for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines. Founded by Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the estate focuses on organic viticulture and minimal intervention, producing standout expressions of Aligoté Doré, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Aubert de Villaine handed over management to his nephew Pierre de Benoist in 2000, with Pierre passionate about rediscovering the identity of the Côte Chalonnaise as a whole and of Bouzeron in particular. These wines embody purity, precision, and a deep respect for Burgundy’s traditions.

    Other Reviews....
Chardonnay grown in Bouzeron, and given the same vinification as the Aligoté. Chardonnay is thickening its skins in these warmer times, enabling Pierre to work with the bitter notes of the skin in the face of lower acidity. Pale colour with a light green tint. Fascinating perfume, actually more interesting than the Bouzeron I find. You can see the bitters to come, along with a floral top note and a white orchard fruit core. There is a lot happening in this wine, with a delicious light biscuit note adding further complexity. Ripe at 13% but correctly so, and finishes by leaving a fresh taste in the mouth. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Apr 2024.

Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Nosing sees gentle yet alluring scents of white peach, nectarine and bees wax released followed by some lemon butter, cashew, biscuity nougat and wet stone notes. Well proportioned the palate features a rich flavour profile of ripe peaches and dried honey over light crème brulee, citrusy nougat, cashew and subtle spice nuances. Round and fullish it finishes with good freshness and a lingering aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Nestled in the French Alps, Domaine des Ardoisières is at the heart of Savoie's revival, crafting wines that capture the region’s raw Alpine energy. The once-abandoned Coteau de Cevins was revived in 1998 by Denis Perroux and biodynamic pioneer Michel Grisard, and since 2005, Brice Omont has continued their vision, cultivating its steep, schist-rich slopes with native varieties. His expansion to the limestone and schist soils of St Pierre de Soucy in 2008 further enriched the Domaine’s range, producing vibrant, terroir-driven cuvées like Quartz, Schiste, Améthyste, and Argile. Today, Domaine des Ardoisières stands as a benchmark for Savoie, proving the region’s potential through meticulous craftsmanship and a deep respect for the land.

Schiste Blanc is a blend of 40% Jacquère, 30% Roussette, 20% Pinot Gris, 10% Mondeuse Blanche. The vineyard is a great terroir with south-facing terraced plots with an impressive 60-degree inclined slope and soil derived from metamorphic mica-schists. Yields are just 25hl/hectare, and the wine is aged for 18 months in three- to five-year-old barrels.

Quartz Blanc is 100% Altesse grown in the Coteau de Cevins vineyard. The variety is also known as Roussette in the Savoie and is the king of Savoie varietals with a personality of fleshy stone fruit held in check by a thread of fine salinity, white pepper and whisps of smoke. Fermented and matured in oak for 18 months, this crystalline will give 10+ years of pleasure in the cellar.

The Savoie region is nestled within the French Alps, not far from Chambéry. Once one powerful wine region with 20,000 hectares planted on the complex slopes of the mountain, it's now a small region, totalling 3,000 hectares. Most of the vineyards have been replanted on the flat, where the machines can find their way but not the quality. However, in 1998, one very special slope called "Coteau de Cevins" abandoned for decades was brought back to life by the Mayor of the area Denis Perroux and Michel Grisard, one of the pioneers of biodynamics in Savoie. The Coteau de Cevins once produced some of the most exciting wines of France.

The Coteau de Cevins was replanted in 1998 with the original, very qualitative vines of Persan and Mondeuse noire (red) as well as Altesse, Roussanne , Mondeuse blanche, Malvoisie and Jacquère (white). The slope reaches 60% of inclination, and the vines are planted on terrasses of very old, complex mica schists, loam and sand. With 8,000 vines planted per hectare and 25 hectolitres per hectare produced, it is the Grand Cru hill of Savoie. Out of this magnificent hill, three wines are produced, called Quartz, Schiste and Améthyste. The first real crop was harvested in 2002. In 2005, Brice Omont was appointed wine grower and director of Domaine des Ardoisières, to pursue the work Michel Grisard had started.

In addition to the Coteau de Cevins, Brice Omont started to rent a vineyard on the Coteau de St Pierre de Soucy in 2008 in order to produce wines from clay and limestone soils and schist. The two Cuvée Argile white and red were born. In 2015, Brice Omont started to rent another vineyard of great quality Jacquère to produce Silice, a highly addictive cuvée of white alpine wine.

The Argile Blanc is a blend of 40% Jacquere, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Mondeuse Blanche grown on western facing slopes on soils of schist and clay. The wine is fermented with native yeast and aged for nine months in vat. The Argile Blanc showcases an abundance of alpine tension and refreshment with flavors of white flowers, orchard fruits and green almonds.

In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.

Located towards the northern part of Fourchaume, this top Premier Cru vineyard is noted for growing on similar contours as the Grand Crus above the right bank of the Serein. The vines on average are 25 years old with some up to 35 years old. Vinified with indigenous yeast with a very long slow alcoholic fermentation of 2-3 months, 80% of the wine is aged in stainless steel and the remaining 20% in aged barrels.
Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense pear and lime aromas meld into light honeyed notes with some wet stone, oyster shell and chalky mineral nuances also evident. The 2015 Chablis 1Er Cru l'Homme Mort comes from 35-year-old vines and sees 15 months in 75% stainless steel and 25% wooden barrels. It has a complex and engaging bouquet, with subtle wax and honeysuckle aromas that combine neatly with the cold stone/flint scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity that counterbalances the viscous texture. It is a typical 2015 Chablis: quite rich and opulent and eschewing mineralité for depth and extravagance, and to be honest, it does that with some panache. Drink 2019-2029.

Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier's talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, and most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That's not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severely low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.

For many, the aptly named Silex is the pinnacle not only in the Dagueneau range, but in all of Pouilly Fumé. Hailing from a north facing vineyard rich in flint soils, the emphasis with Silex is the pure mineral traits Pouilly Fumé is famous for, yet with intensity and focus dialled up to eleven. Silex can take a few years in the cellar to fully express the core of citrus fruit among the smoke and flint notes; however history has proven it is well worth the wait. Dagueneau's Silex is a class leading icon of the Loire Valley.

The 2021 Terres Blanches is round and silky with a fine chalky texture that provides a fine, appetizing texture on the finish. It is satisfying with a delightful thread of acidity that keeps it together and your mouth watering. The richly fragrant 2021 Caillottes offers dill, fennel and elderflower at this early stage. Having undergone full malo and remained on lees for 12 months, it has a round and creamy texture while retaining the natural freshness of the vintage with an appealing line of acidity and chalky, almost tannic grip. The 2020 Pouilly Fumé MCMLV hails from Domaine du Bouchot's oldest plot of vines dating back to 1955 hence the name MCMLV. Bottled just four weeks before I tasted it in June 2022, it had undergone an unusual winemaking process: half of the wine underwent skin contact for several days while the rest was pressed directly into old (8 to 10-year-old) 500-liter barrels. This wine shows lots of thiol-related flavors: tropical fruit, gooseberry as well as a hint of green. It is wine with lots of texture, a sense of roundness and completeness with a sense of satisfying grip that clasps the palate on the finish. There's lovely acidity, but it's nicely balanced. Seems at first like a subtle expression of sauvignon, with initial aromas of lavender and light lemony citrus fruit. But on the palate you discover a deep-set, complex array of citrus and yellow fruit, together with a whole heap of terroir-driven nuances, from wet gray clay to sand and gravel. Full-bodied and super-silky with calm persistence. Long, mineral finish with some phenolic tightening. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Old vines. Drink or hold.

Domaine du Chardonnay was established in 1987 as a joint venture between three partners: Etienne Boileau, William Nahan and Christian Simon. For many years the wines were marketed as both Domaine du Chardonnay and Etienne Boileau, depending on the market. By 2019 though, all three of the original founders had retired and William’s son Arnaud Nahan took over the management of the business, while Thomas Labille joined as winemaker and equity partner. Thomas had previously worked with Domaine Laroche and in new hands the wines are going from strength to strength. A substantial investment has been made in equipment, with old fibreglass tanks being retired and replaced with new stainless steel (even stainless steel ‘barriques’!). Domaine du Chardonnay now replaces the Etienne Boileau label in the Australian market.
Bright pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Wet stone and oyster shell laced aromas of spicy pear and citrus emanate from the glass with some minerality also evident. Initial lime and green apple flavours meld into oyster shell and stony mineral characters on the back half. Finishes dry with brisk, refreshing acidity and a flinty wet stone infused aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted ripe pear, lime and dried honey aromas overlay wet stone, subtle oyster shell and chalk. Nicely rounded, the palate opens with fleshy pear, lime and dried honey flavours. Sitting in the background are stony characters and a subtle chalky minerality. Finishes dry with a lick of fresh acidity and a textured medium length aftertaste.

Within a short period of time Antoine Foucault is already making some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley. The Domaine du Collier was created in 1999 by Antoine (son of Charly Foucault from the famed Clos Rougeard) and his wife Caroline. Having worked at Clos Rougeard for four years and still at the young age of 26 he took the opportunity to buy four-hectares of vines (through his family) in the commune of Brézé in the best lieu-dit of ‘La Ripaille’. The estate comprises 6 hectares with the vast majority of the estate planted to Chenin Blanc (including some 100 year old vines) and just under a hectare of Cabernet Franc.

Antoine is dedicated to natural viticulture, without the use of chemical treatments, fertilizers, or weed killers. The harvest is manual with strict sorting carried out in the vineyards. In his deep cellar, Antoine does not use commercial yeast, and doesn’t treat the wine with sulphur until bottling. The end results are brilliant and it is probably no surprise that demand for them is very high and as a result they can be very hard to find.

The intensely yellow colored 2017 Saumur Blanc La Charpentrie is enormously deep, intense and complex on the concentrated and finely iodine and substantial nose. Full-bodied, round and lush on the palate yet also with a fascinating chalky finesse, this is a full-bodied, dense, round and vital, sustainable, iodine and finessed, highly stimulating finish. This is an undesignated grand cru from Saumur. Abnormally good. Highly recommended. 12.5% alcohol. Natural cork. 2021 - 2060.

The 2017 Saumur Blanc is bright and intense on the concentrated and chalky nose that is very fine, complex and authentic. Pure, fresh and highly elegant on the palate, this is a piercingly mineral, fresh and salty, stimulatingly grippy Chenin Blanc with a long, clear, fresh and iodine finish. 12.5% alcohol. Natural cork. Drink 2021 - 2040.

Always an incredible wine, this is produced from an old vine parcel (>100 years) in the lieu-dit of 'La Charpentrie' in Brézé. Deeper and more sombre than the regular Saumur Blanc always with a fine precision. Thrilling, complex scents of lime, flowers and pineapple give way brightly citric, concentrated palate, underpinned by chalky, mineral elements. This has more power and tension than the Saumur Blanc (if that is even possible!) - it is simply a wine for the ages. This rare bottling is one of the great white wines of France.

This 2016 is shaping up as one of the finest Saumur Blanc produced from Antoine. That it is a wine from grapes grown in stone and then aged in a stone cellar is evident - this is totally crystalline, seemingly hewn purely from the stones that lie in the ground from which it comes - floating on top is an entrancing citrus and floral perfume. In 2016 there is freshness and clarity - it has real presence and drive the finish is chiseled in the mouth displaying cut and salinity - it finishes with the sort of gravitas to make you ponder. Mouthwatering acidity, a fine substance, a vivacious finish - there is greatness here.
