2019 Domaine Christian Moreau Valmur Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A deft application of wood serves as a neutral but not imperceptible backdrop for the exotic and lemon-suffused aromas of pear, apple and iodine. There is fine volume and outstanding richness to the dense, muscular and powerful large-scaled flavors that terminate in an agreeably dry, sappy and beautifully long finish. This is a classic Valmur controlled power that is clearly built for mid to even longer-term cellaring.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru was cropped at 25hl/ha from 45- to 70-year-old vines and matured in a mixture of 1- to 4-year-old barrels, for bottling in 2021. This has a very perfumed and slightly better-defined bouquet than the Blanchot. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, ripe but tense with superb mineralité already in evidence. Focused all the way through to the lingering finish, this is an outstanding Valmur in the making.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - Vinous24 hl/ha, so all has been made in wood, just blended, so the wine has not fallen clear yet. The bouquet shows class however, with a welcome tightness of approach, Perhaps a touch of sulphur. Plenty of colour beneath though. This is very pure, less Côte d’Orien than, sometimes, but there is a racy shellfish underlay. Finesse and intensity, not as broad based

2019 Domaine Christian Moreau Les Clos Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Interestingly, this is aromatically quite similar to the Valmur save for the presence of an abundance of floral elements. The super-intense, indeed almost painful, broad-shouldered flavors possess evident minerality and excellent delineation that possess a bracing salinity on the hugely long finale. This too is clearly built for extended cellaring and is going to need at least 5 to 7 before it will be approachable. In a word, excellent.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru yielded 35hl this year and is matured 50% in new and used barrels and the rest in tank. It has a well-defined bouquet with precise scents of yellow flowers, struck flint and smoke. I may actually prefer this to the Clos des Hospices cuvée. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, taut and focused and full of energy. The Clos des Hospices has more depth and intensity on the finish, so overall it has the upper hand, but this is a serious Les Clos that will give 20–25 years of drinking pleasure.

Neal Martin - VinousA healthy 45 hl/ha, made with 45% in barrel and 55% in tank, the parts as yet unassembled (though this sample is). Racy, lime and lemon colour with a very pure intense clean, but ripe nose, with a little spice. Very tasty! This has significantly more weight, some toast from the barrel, a little bit of flesh too, good weight as well, but seems to lack a touch of tension. White fruit typicity remerges at the back.

The nose of the 2019 Brézé is richly fruited and creamy, showing tropical pineapple characters and giving the impression of opulence. It is concentrated and powerful with real intensity of flavor. The 2018 Brézé is a clay-ey site, giving richness to the wine. It is round, silky and succulent, reflecting this sunny, warm vintage. It is at a beautiful stage in its evolution: developing almond characters alongside white peach. There’s fine acid rather than a racy profile but with a gourmand texture. Pastry, peach, and almond linger on the long finish. Drink 2023-2028.

Rebecca Gibb MW - VinousSofter impression to the nose than the 2019, but overlaid with a sense of minerality following through to the palate. This vintage is a halfway house between the old style (very flavourful and full-bodied), and the new style (fresher with more sense of tension). It shows a perfect balance between fruity and savoury, with some light lactic impressions at the end. ‘This is Clos Rougeard with all the complexity from citrus to exotic fruits,’ says winemaker Jacques-Antoine Toublanc. Vinified in new (20%) and up to four-year-old barrels, the 2015 Saumur Blanc Brézé exhibits a deep, intensely fruity and chalky, concentrated and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits, orange and grapefruit, as well as fine iodine notes. Silky, round and highly elegant on the palate, this is a rich and powerful, incredibly aromatic, round and finely iodine Chenin Blanc of exceptional quality. The wine is intensely fruity, juicy, ripe, refined and elegant, finely grippy and salty, and it finishes with lovely orange bitters. An impressive Chenin Blanc for hedonists, it has developed dramatically well in the last three years. 13.5% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2021. Drink 2021-2060.

The 2017 Brézé is an athletic lane of wine, going from the start gun to the finish line in one tram line. Citrus, pineapple and a reductive note with that salty edge you expect from this vineyard. Rebecca Gibb MW - VinousThe white wine from this iconic producer is often generous in style. The cooler 2017 vintage shows a typically rich, toasty nose, but the cooler 2017 vintage has resulted in palate structure that's firmer and more mineral-edged than this producer's often generous style. Concentration of honeyed melon fruit is balanced by brisk acidity and supported by savoury, mealy complexity. Long and lovely. Farmed using biodynamic principles. Drink 2024-2044.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Aug 18, 2023)The 2019 Gaïa is a bit of a Muscadet anomaly in that it is biodynamically grown and is fermented and matured in concrete egg. It's a rich style with a high level of intensity. Having gone through malolactic, it has a soft and full mouthfeel. The finish is salty and citrussy with a fine element of bitterness and nutty savory character. Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is stunning. It exudes textural depth, intensity and pedigree from the very first taste. I imagine it will still be stellar in another few years’ time. For now, it is a wine to think about cellaring. Time brings out dried lemon peel, sage, mint, chamomile, salt and crushed rock scents that lend both vibrancy and complexity. In most vintages, the Blanc is either incredibly steely or ample in feel. The Domaine de Chevalier 2018 Blanc, a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, slowly reveals beguiling scents of lemongrass, lime leaves, fresh grapefruit, allspice and ginger with a core of fresh lemon and grapefruit. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers bold citrus and spice layers with fantastic tension and a chalky finish. Aging on lees in barriques, 35% new, is anticipated to go for 16 months.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine AdvocateLively lime pith, herb, green apple, fennel and verbena notes streak through. The very focused finish has good zing for the vintage. Defined and long, this will unwind a bit more slowly than most of its peers.

James Molesworth - Wine SpectatorThis is dense and very structured with phenolic tension and depth. Full-bodied, lightly phenolic with sliced apples, cooked pears and lemons. Lively and intense. Solid as a rock. This is one to watch.

James SucklingDomaine de Chevalier's Blanc is surprisingly unctuous in this vintage. Lemon confit, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many notes that develop in the glass. The Blanc is, of course, famous for its ageworthiness, but I don't see the complexity, energy or structure of the very best years. I would prefer to drink it on the younger side. In 2018, the red is vastly more interesting than the Blanc. The blend is 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon. Tasted three times.

Antonio Galloni - VinousOne of the whites of the vintage is the 2018 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, which is both powerful and fresh in the vintage. Crushed citrus, tart melon, lemon curd, and crushed rock-like minerality all give way to a pure, full-bodied dry white that has integrated acidity and a great, great finish. A blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon that will spend 18 months in 35% new French oak, it’s going to be relatively accessible in its youth (unlike the 2015) yet should age beautifully.

The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc bursts with notions of ripe yellow apples, juicy pears and lime blossoms, plus hints of blanched almonds, yuzu zest and wet pebbles. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers impactful apple and citrus flavors with a racy backbone and seductive oiliness to the texture, finishing long and minerally.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is fabulous. Bright and airy in the glass, the 2020 bristles with energy. Lemon confit, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all pulse with tons of vibrancy. This finely-cut, chiseled white is going to need a number of years to be at its best, but it is so impressive and so full of potential. Bright saline notes punctuate the dazzling finish. Time in the glass brings out the wine's texture and layers. The Blanc is one of the world's great wines, hands down.

Antonio Galloni - VinousA dense, creamy DC white with lots of rich cooked-apple, mineral, cream and praline character. It’s full and very layered with chewy intensity and a long, bitter-lemon and almost honey finish. Pretty phenolic tension, too.

James SucklingStraw yellow in color, the wine shows off its Meyer lemons, spice, mango, pink grapefruit, lemon oil and flowers on the nose. On the palate the wine is silky, lush, creamy, juicy and fresh, finishing with sweet lemons and green apple nuances that easily display their purity, silky textures and racy acidity. The wine blends 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon 13.7% ABV.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderAn excellent white with precision, flesh and confidence, sure to age well. A ton of white pear and some soft pepper spice keeps up the pace and lift from beginning to end, and the intensity continues to build after the wine has left the palate - a sure sign of something special happening. A yield of 43hl/ha. Tasted twice. Unusual for me to score the red and white Chevalier at the same level, but both are extremely successful in this vintage.

The Domaine de Chevalier 2015 Blanc is composed of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon, fermented in barrel (35% new), and aged for 18 months on the lees with stirring. It opens with lovely lemon tart, fresh grapefruit and pineapple with a waft of honeysuckle. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly knit with wonderfully crisp acid and a citrusy finish.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Feb 2018)The 2015 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is every bit as captivating from bottle as it was from barrel. Time seems to have given the 2015 more depth and freshness, which is obviously a very good thing. A host of lemon peel, crushed rock, green pear, mint and dried apricot notes develop in the glass, but as is so often the case here, it is the wine's textural brilliance and persistence that place it among the world's great wines. The 2015 is simply magnificent.

Antonio Galloni - VinousInstantly impressive nose with pristine lemons and limes as well as subtly flinty, reductive notes. It will deliver at both ends.

James SucklingThe 2015 Chevalier Blanc is as brilliant now as it was on release yet still needs 4-5 years of bottle age to show at its best. Crushed lime, lemon zest, crushed rocks, and beautiful white grapefruit notes all emerge from this racy, beautifully concentrated, focused white that checks in with the crème de la crème of the vintage.

Jeb DunnuckClearly a contender for the top white Bordeaux wine, aside from you know who... The wine offers a crisp entry loaded with just squeezed lemon, pomelo, crushed rocks, lime and floral notes. Fresh and refreshing, concentrated and with racy acidity giving it lift, the honey and vanilla accents add just right amount of fatness to the wine. This is a beauty!

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderWhat sets this estate apart is its consistency for so many years since the current owner Olivier Bernard took the helm in 1983. The cooler vineyard surrounded by forest was ideal for the warmer 2015 vintage and compares favourably with the 2014. A more exotic and opulent style for the estate, exhibiting juicy white stone fruit - pear and peach - but wonderfully floral with a wet stone freshness marking the long, precise finish. Over time, shaved almond and fresh cut hay emerge. It is worth nothing that 2015 is the first vintage to use Diam cork, and the superior freshness compared to the 2014 is noticeable.

The Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon matured in around 40% new oak, with a low pH, Olivier Bernard remarking that it was close to 3.0. It has an almost clinical nose, extremely well defined, Zen-like at first with scents of flint and cold granite, stone rather than fruit. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, though it is not shrill. It is very focused, "minimalist" Domaine de Chevalier that Olivier remarked is perhaps the best he has ever made. Perhaps he is right. There is a Burgundy like sense of terroir coming through here, a wine that perhaps does not wish to conform to the Bordeaux stereotype of what a white Pessac-Léognan should be. So it's a bit of a sui generis, a one-off, and you'll love it. Drink 2018 - 2035.

The twist of clean minerality from the first attack brings a smile. You are in the hands of experts here, citrus dusting, controlled sappy acidity that just keeps on coming drip by drip, lovely persistency. Almond-blossom perfume and then, oh-oh-oh so beautiful. This is shimmering with depth and excitement. Absolutely thrilling wine. Quince and bitter orange, wrinkling apricot skin and baobab-fruit tang, sweet cardamom and cumin seeds. The fruit is violin-string sonorous and complex, soaring up through my fruit, sending goosebumps down the length of my spine. Beginning in 2005, Domaine de la Pépière has produced this cuvée from a small parcel of 50 to 110 year-old vines within the Pepiere vineyard. Originally called "Granite de Clisson" after the unique bedrock in the vineyard, Marc has changed the name to "Clisson" to agree with the new INAO Cru Communal classification. The granite is covered with gravel and clay with large stones, ensuring good drainage and deep penetration by the roots into the fissures in the bedrock, bringing the mineral elements indispensable to this wine.

This lovely wine clearly illustrates the difference between the granite and gneiss terroirs in Muscadet. Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south-facing slope overlooking the Maine. This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink over the next 5 to 8 years, it has a more herbal and floral bouquet than the granite-based wines and the palate, although refreshing and bright, is softer and more open.

The 2017 Monnières Saint-Fiacre offers ripe nectarine, apple and citrus alongside lees-derived nutty characters, having spent three years on lees. The Domaine de la Pépière Château Thébaud comes from old vines in a beautiful vineyard sloping down towards the river Maine. The granite here (granite de Château-Thébaud) is fissured and permeable by the vine roots which have access to water during dry spells and absorb micro-nutrients along the way. The grapes are hand harvested, fed into the press by gravity and undergo a one to two month fermentation with wild yeasts. The wine ages "sur-lie" for 30 months with regular battonage, contributing to the complex aromatics and richness of the wine.

The 2017 Château Thébaud has spent three and a half years building the mid palate to an elegant yet silken core. It is a quiet wine that is rather meditative and caresses the palate with its delicate yet creamy texture. The finish offers satisfying grip and a fine powdery veil of texture. This is a really gorgeous Muscadet that is precise and draws through to a lengthy finish. Drink 2022 - 2034.

This is also agreeably cool and restrained with its prominent floral aromas that add a certain elegance to the mostly white orchard fruit and lemon-lime wisps. The intense and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors exude a bead of minerality on the equally bone-dry linear and crisp finale that is borderline lean today. The one Chardonnay produced in the year of frost, the 2017 Arbois Les Brulées Chardonnay fermented and matured in 1,200-liter oak vat. None of the wines have any added sulfur and are produced in a natural way, fermented with indigenous yeasts and are quite true to the soils. Despite being rich and round, this has energy and good acidity and finishes with a tasty, saline twist. The yields worked out at something like 0.3 hectoliters per hectare! Remarkable result, but catastrophic yield.

I got the name of this Savagnin—planted on the same terroir as the Chardonnay Les Brulées—wrong last year, as the wine does not carry the name of the terroir. So, this year, I got it right for the 2017 Arbois Savagnin Autrement. All the white grapes have a direct pressing of the full clusters and ferment with wild yeasts. This year it fermented in stainless steel and then matured in stainless steel and a 500-liter cask. This is my favorite white from 2017, and I find it remarkably good for the catastrophic conditions of the year. The wine is clean and has a varietal nose, with yellow plums, acacia flowers and honey, a little volatile; it has a round palate, very tasty flavors and good volume and is balanced, with a tasty, salty finish.
