2019 Domaine Didier Dagueneau Pur SangLoire Valley, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkPouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier's talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That's not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severly low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.
Pur Sang (French for thoroughbred) is a superstar in the Dagueaneau cellar, and is widely considered one of the great white wines of the world. It comes from a densely planted, 30 year old vineyard in Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye called La Folie (the madness), hidden between two parcels of woodland about five kilometres north of Saint-Andelain. The vineyard is named for the local farmers, who thought Didier Dagueneau was mad when he purchased the land which was not a vineyard at the time and full of huge boulders. Back then it was not even registered as part of the Pouilly-Fumé AOC. It turns out that Didier had done his homework; not only was La Folie a historical Pouilly vineyard, but its vein of pure flint and Ludian silica clay (chaille roulées) as well as its gently sloping south/south-east exposure, made it potentially one of Pouilly’s finest.
Other Reviews....
What I love most about the 2019 Pur Sang is its focus and precision; the compact, light bodied core carries masses of fragrance across the palate and beyond on the long finish. There's clarity and freshness, with a thread of acidity and minerality pulling the wine through like a needle and thread. It is starting to show the very first hints of time in bottle with a hint of almond alongside the ripe melon notes and nettle tea character. Impressive stuff from this three-hectare parcel in the village of Saint Laurent l'Abbaye, about 5km northeast of the Dagueneau domaine. Drink 2022-2034.

In many ways the ultimate Dagueneau wine, Silex is super-mineral, pure and crystalline, and is typically driven, intense and very long-lived. Silex means flint and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines here mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than most other vineyards. Silex is fermented and aged in the famed Dagueneau cigar-shaped barrels as well as other casks.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Pouilly Fumé Silex shows an initial tenderness, sitting quietly and not shouting that it's made it into your glass. This is a wine that has its act together, feeling integrated and balanced with plentiful concentration and a savory long finish. A delicate dill note, which is a characteristic of oaked Sauvignon peeks out amid the hush. Drink 2022-2034.

It was long Didier Dagueneau’s dream to make a great Sancerre from the legendary, chalky slopes of Chavignol. He was finally able to acquire a half-hectare site in the late 1990s, smack-bang in the middle of the renowned vineyard of Les Monts Damnés. He soon began planting it to his exacting specifications. This location is south-facing and extremely steep, with white soil packed with chalk. The historical name of the parcel or climat (within Monts Damnés) is Les Vignes Blanches. Dagueneau noted that in spite of the aspect, it is one of the cooler terroirs of Monts Damnés.
Other Reviews....
The Dagueneau family has been making Sancerre off the steep slopes of the Monts Damnés since the early 2000s, and it's a rather different beast than their Pouilly-Fumés. The 2017 Le Mont Damné is incredibly pure and transparent with arrow-like precision, citrus and floral nuances and some nutty influence. Precise and refined, delivering glacial purity of fruit; the Kimmeridgian terroir gives this wine line, length and direction. The lengthy finish is scented with florals, citrus and spiced apples. Lip-smacking, no-holds-barred Sauvignon. Drink 2022 - 2034.

Perhaps the most famous of the Dagueneau cuvées, the 2018 Silex is flowing and accessible on entry, but then it coils and tightens. The silex (flint) soil gives firmness, imbuing structure and steely tension. Power and concentration combine, providing an almost waxy texture on the finish. Flavors of spiced apples, almonds and pastry linger. It's just not quite as long as expected. Tasted over three days. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Sourced from a south-facing single vineyard on flint and clay over chalk, the 2018 Pur Sang is all white flowers and spiced apple pastry. Seemingly effortless and silken, its Sauvignon edges rounded out in barrels. It offers excellent concentration on the mid-palate, a line of acidity acting like a thread and holding the core together like a ball. Delectably textured, with a hint of tannic sensation holding the mouth gently on a lengthy conclusion that's drawn-out and precise. A complex, multifaceted wine. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Buisson Renard is a cool, mid-slope terroir on the southwest side of the Saint-Andelain slope. Here the soils are a mixture of clay and flint (or silex, as the French call it). This was barrel fermented and aged in Dagueneau’s bespoke, cigar-shaped barrels (450 and 600 litres) which are designed to increase lees contact.
Other Reviews....
Returning in 2018 after 2017 was wiped out by frosts, this is an intense, wild 2018 Buisson Renard, like an untamed head of curls. In clear evidence at this early stage, it has floral and boxwood characters and a nutty oak-derived influence. There's even an intriguing note of peppermint on the sinewy, lengthy finish. In a mid-weight, linear style with a firm, phenolic finish that almost requires knife and fork. This needs more time in bottle to shed its austere frame, but if you're not in a hurry... Drink 2023 - 2033.

Previously labelled as Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, now reborn as Blanc Etc… and looking better than ever. This is the Domaine's only wine that is not terroir or soil specific, instead produced from the fruit of four vineyards. Two are plots situated away from the Saint-Andelain hill: one a parcel of 15-20 year old vines on flinty-clay soils; the other in the lieu-dit of Les Coques on limestone/marl (white clay) soil. This fruit was blended with young-vine parcels from Le Bois de Saint-Andelain itself. It was fermented in a mix of new and three-four year old barrels and then matured in both wood and tank.
Other Reviews....
A round, mouth-filling, textured 2018 Blanc etc. offers almond croissant, sweet apple and nectarine flavors. Full in body, the 2018 presents a sense of weight, fine texture, a line of delightful acidity and a lengthy, savory finish. From the Pouilly-Fumé appellation but now labeled as Vin de France, this wine was known as Blanc de Pouilly-Fumé until 2017. It's already drinking well now but has plentiful concentration and structure to continue for the medium term. Drink 2021 - 2027.

Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous - 2010 Didier Grappe Vin Jaune (620ml)Jura, FRANCE$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Didier Grappe completed his studies at the viticulture wine school in Beaune, Burgundy in 2001, and in 2007 his domain was certified organic by Ecocert. Situated in Saint-Lothain within the Côtes-du-Jura appellation, Domaine Didier Grappe farms 3.5 hectares of local varietals across three separate parcels around the village—Champs Rouge, Novelin, and Longefin. Half a hectare is planted with the red varietals (Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau), with three hectares dedicated to Chardonnay and Savagnin. These are rooted in grey and red marl soils, which he tends to with the utmost respect. No chemical treatments are used in the vineyard, and his winemaking involves no cultured yeasts or tannins, and is void of chaptalisation, acidification, filtering, and fining. “Grapes only”, as he would say.
Vin Jaune is emblematic of the Jura region, and is made from 100% Savagnin that thrives in the hills of blue and grey marls from the lias (Jurassic) and the earlier trias (Mesozoic) eras. All harvesting is done by hand, and following vinification the wines spends 6 years maturing in barrel with no topping up. This allows a layer of flor to form on top of the wine, and gives the final wine its unique walnut and saline flavours.

2011 Disznoko Aszu 'Kapi' 6 Puttonyos Tokaji (500ml)Tokaji, HUNGARY$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkKapi is a super-premium 6 puttonyos produced from a single parcel (the first 'Grand Cru' site identified and vinified separately by Disznókő) in very limited quantities. It is only produced in exceptional vintages - so far only three vintages (including this 2011) have been released. Planted on the upper part of the southern slopes of Disznókő, this plot has slightly lighter and more mineral soil than elsewhere on the estate and has come to be identified for the delicacy and precision of its wines. Not only is it a single-vineyard wine but also a single variety wine; Kapi is 100% Furmint. The 2011 was harvested via three passes through the vineyard between 28 September and 11 November yielding individually selected berries that were then steeped in a Furmint-based must.
Other Reviews....
Tasted at the Disznoko tasting in London, the 2011 Tokaji Aszu Kapi Vineyard 6 Puttonyos is an absolutely startling wine, frankly one of the best that I have tasted from the estate. It certainly surpasses my expectations given the bottle that I rated almost a year ago. This is their third single vineyard release following the 1999 and 2005 and having picked earlier, I feel this approach completely enhances the wine. It has a showstopping, crystalline bouquet that shimmers: Japanese yuzu, citrus fruit and an underlying stoniness (none of that chlorine tang that I picked up last time). The palate has a fabulous line of acidity running from start to finish: tensile, poised and with just a dab of white peach and nectarine on the mineral-rich finish. This is a fantastic Tokaji that should be a joy to drink for many years.

Tasted at the Disznóko vertical in London, the 2008 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos is a blend of 70% Furmint, 20% Zéta and 10% Hárslevelu, the maceration mostly with finished wine. This has an exceptional bouquet: Satsuma and mandarin, quince and marmalade, wonderful mineralite and tension. The palate is very well balanced with mandarin, lime, orange rind and a touch of quince. This is edgy, a more unpredictable yet compelling Tokaji from Disznoko with a very long and sustained finish. This comes highly recommended—an outstanding 5 Puttonyos.

Long aftertaste of passionfruit, grapefruit, citrus, grassy asparagus and faint capsicum.

The first thing you notice is the name, Overnoy. This one is not to be confused with the legendary estate in Pupillin although Guillame's Grandfather was a brother to Pierre Overnoy and their Poulsard is propagated from cuttings from Arbois-Pupillin. This estate is located in Orbagna, in the south of the Jura in the region of Sud Revermont. Guillaume came back to the family estate in 2013 and has been working full time since then. In 2014 he began conversion of the estate of 5.5 hectares to organic cultivation. They have all five Jura varieties planted and specialize in Trousseau which does particularly well in their area. The vines are grown mostly in Orbagna but they also have a single hectare further north in Cesancey. All vines are hand tended and farmed organically, always have been. Vinification is sensitive, observational, and skilful - generations of experience come in very handy.
Four years sous-voile, or under a veil of flor, before some time in bottle. Huge amounts of complexity, citric and saline in the mouth, with curry leaf, saffron and baking spices. Has super length and complexity with a finish that goes on, gastronomic and salivating all at once. This is quite remarkable.

This is a Savagnin aged in barrel Ouille, or topped up, like in Burgundy. Vines are mostly 40 years of age, and grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards on blue marl soils. Natural fermentation and bottled with a tiny dose of sulfur. The nose is salty and fresh, with green herbs and lemon, while the palate is bracing and moreish with pepper, apple, and lemon zest on the finish.

From vines near Cesancey and aged for two years in barrel Ouille, or topped up, like in Burgundy. This shows the warm tone of 2018 but is Jurassically bright, citric and floral with clear fresh and direct presence. You can feel and taste the limestone soils in the mouth where the saline infused flavours linger on.

Clarity is a term that accurately describes the 2018 Sancerre Clos La Néore. It has a pure and intense core of fruit. But it's not fruity. It's a sophisticated style with a distinctive aromatic profile - chamomile tea, lemon, honey and almond meal and an almost tonic-like edge. Today his son, Pierre-Marie and grandson Olivier Clape run the estate, which is considered to be the benchmark producer in the region. They farm 5.38 acres of Cornas including a resounding 3 hectares on the granitic soils of what is the finest plot in Cornas - Reynards. An “old-style” producer with no destemming, wild yeast ferments that take place in concrete vats and aging in older, neutral foudres for 20 months before bottling without filtration. If you seek a traditional Syrah from the sun-drenched, terraced slopes of the Northern Rhône, the stunning wines of Auguste Clape should be at the top of your list.
