2020 Breuer & Mehriein & Lunden Riesling Venture TrockenRheingau, GERMANY$27. 99Bottle$335.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 4 Years (2022-2026)ABV: 12%Closure: StelvinA joint venture between Theresa Breuer, Weingut Bernhard Mehrlein from Oestrich-Winkel and Georg Breuer cellarmaster Markus Lundén. Sourced from three to four different villages around the region to bring diversity, the fruit is whole bunch pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel for approximately 8 months.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct tinge of green to the edges. Aromas of lime, pear and red apple are married to hints of honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. Scrumptious lime, red apple and subtle orange blossom infusions overlay a crunchy back drop of chalky lemon and wet slate characters. Zippy acidity finishing dry, long and mouth watering. Alc. 12% - 2019 Bricco Ernesto Vino BiancoPiedmont, ITALY$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Cork
Bricco Ernesto company was born in the small village of Priocca in Roero, Piedmont, and is run by one of the most talented and driven vignerons in the region; Renato Vezza. Along with his partner, they juggle multiple-part time jobs in their quest to maximize the potential of this land which has been farmed sustainably since the 1990's. The cellar is as stripped down as they come, with just a few cement tanks and a small collection of barrels. That's pretty much it.
With the 2019 vintage Renato has produced a small amount of Arneis for the first time. However, the Bricco Ernesto Bianco is not an Arneis as you normally know it. 100% Arnies that is macerated and fermented in wood for 100 days before aging for 6 months in Amphora and then 6 months in bottle. By no means an aperitif wine, but a multi-layered, deep, complex wine with aromas of honey, beeswax, stone fruit and herbs, with texture, medium body and length. A truly tiny 800 bottles only made in this first vintage.
Other Reviews....
I thought this was going to be another Piedmont bianco, and then saw the colour and thought ‘Oooh good!. It’s (Roero) Arneis that spends a whopping 100 days on skins in old wood, then goes into anfora. 800 bottles produced.
Orange, waxy, nutty, spicy, dried herb, floral, stonefruit. Chewy but fresh. A lot of grip, but a wholesome feel to the tannin, if that makes sense. Long and spicy. Really good skin contact white here. I never decided on 94 or 95 points. Either way. Drink 2021 - 2027.

2018 Brundlmayer Kamptal Terrassen Gruner VeltlinerKamptal, AUSTRIA$34. 99Bottle$419.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 3 Years (2019-2022)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinGrüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things.
This is probably Austria's number one estate outside the Wachau. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel protect the vineyards from the cold north-westerly winds. During the day, the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night the fresh, fragrant forest air drifts through the Kamp Valley into the Langenloiser Arena. The Kamptal is not far from the Wachau or Kremstal but it does throw up a whole different terroir and style mix. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are still kings but there are no Federspiel/Smaragd categories. The wines of Bründlmayer are dry, mineral, powerful and harmonious.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged outskirts and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, green apple, pear and subtle fresh herb infusions are followed by slatey mineral notes. Nicely textured, the palate is intensely flavoured with lime, pear and green apple fruit over a background of wet slate and minerals. Finishes dry and crisp with a long mouth watering aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Ripe pear, hay and yeast on the nose promise both fruit and savoriness. The palate adds lively apple freshness and combines pear and yeast in a fruity embrace. This is easy and dry but full of interest.

The 2016 Roero Arneis was bottled on Saint Valentine's Day and that's a fitting touch. Some 140,000 bottles were made, which is more than average. This is a fresh and buoyant wine that is loaded with tangy tropical fruit, pineapple and honeydew melon. The wine's intensity is exuberant, pronounced and refreshing. Dustings of fine mineral and salty limestone characteristics give the wine a brilliant sense of polish and crispness. Bruna Giacosa tells me the fruit harvested in 2016 was beautiful. She distinctly remembers the perfumes of the Arneis grapes as they came into the winery on the back of a truck during harvest. This is a beautiful white wine. Drink 2017-2020.

From red and yellow sandstone soils of the premier crus but earlier pickings and younger vines, the 2021 Wachenheimer Riesling Village offers a clear, pure, fresh, precise and flinty bouquet of concentrated lemons and ripe yellow seed fruits. The 2019 Riesling/Grüner Veltliner is rather lovely in a serious way. While you might think the combination of these two varieties would create a light, linear style, this is quite the opposite with its rich, savory, dense core of fruit. It’s dry, fresh and firm, with a satisfying bit of grunt on the long, grippy finish. You can expect lingering layers of apple, citrus and spice flavors, but the joy of this wine is truly in its multifaceted textural elements. It continues to improve year on year. Drink 2022 - 2029.

2019 Carmes de Rieussec (375ml)Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$34. 99Bottle$419.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2026-2032)ABV: 14%Closure: Diam CorkBeing owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard. Across the various plots the plantings are broken down as 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak. The chateau also produces a second wine called Carmes de Rieussec, which is subjected to the same rigour in the vineyard and winery as the first wine, however the emphasis with Carmes is more on beautiful aromatics and citrus flavours. Barrels showing more of these traits are selected to be bottled as Carmes de Rieussec after 18 months of elevage.
A viscous, honey coated Sauternes that still manages to show a sense of refinement.
Pale gold colour. Exotic aromatics of apricot, pineapple and honey laced peaches mix with marmalade, hints of dried fig and spice. Viscous, honey coated flavours of peach and apricot are draped across the sweet, juicy palate with dried pineapple, subtle marmalade and spiced fig elements dancing across the back half. Showing a sense of freshness and refinement, it finishes long and luscious.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.
For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

A suggestion of the exotic is present on the aromas of white peach, dried orange peel and moderate wood-scented nose. There is good intensity to the utterly delicious middleweight flavors that culminate in a clean, dry, youthfully austere finish that displays fine length. This well-made effort should drink well early or with mid-term cellaring of 5 to 7 years. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe chardonnay vines are at mid slope, which ripens early so the white Beaune Grèves has to be picked among the very first. Attractively perfumed, yet with quite a dainty touch on the palate, with an energy that emerges at the back, after the white fruit flesh, now followed by some tangerine notes. Enough acidity, though in style a wine which will come forward quite quickly. Drink from 2026-2032.

A more elegant nose is comprised by more floral-suffused aromas of white fleshed fruit, citrus and subtle rosemary oil whiffs. Here too there is a really lovely texture to the medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while buffering the citrus-tinged finale that offers noticeably better depth. This too is recommended. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundLow yield at 30-35 instead of 50-55 hl/ha, due to a little bit of 161/49 damage. Lovely pale lemon with a green tint. The bouquet is pleasingly elegant as well, then a little bacon fat arrives. Interesting texture, a fine-grained tannin supporting some quality white fruit. Medium plus length, altogether an attractive wine. Slightly riper aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2034.

Like the Champ Gains, the expressive nose is markedly floral in character with additional notes of essence of pear, rosemary oil and citrus confit in evidence. The rich, caressing, seductive and beautifully textured middleweight flavors possess fine length and balance while offering just a bit more depth. Once again, this is worth your interest. Allen Meadows - BurghoundMade from 50-60 year old vines, small bunches, small leaves, hardly need to trim them. Millerand throughout. A clear pale colour, with a significant concentration of white fruit on the palate. Not the most demonstrative but there is good intensity, juicy and good acidity too, but above all there is this intensity of white fruit. Do not be in a hurry for this. Drink from 2027-2035.

A fresh, cool and very pretty nose reveals only a hint of exotic character on the aromas of white peach, orange peel and anise. Once again the palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is rich, generous and seductive but with more evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the nicely dry bitter lemon-inflected finale. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundCaroline Morey’s rows run from top to bottom of the Caillerets slope. A light green tint, fresh and enticing. Precision rather than strictness, with energy but there is a wealth of quality white fruit, with some floral aspects too, lingering nicely on the palate. Racy but ripe apples spread out at the finish. Drink from 2027-2036.

Soft wood sets off slightly riper though not exotic aromas of white peach, petrol and citrus confit. There is excellent density to the sappy and palate saturating medium weight flavors that are both denser and possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel while delivering fine length on the balanced finale where the wood expressed by the nose reemerges. Lovely with very good cellaring potential. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru is almost entirely from Champs Gain and Vergers. It has a clean and precise bouquet, quite focused, not powerful but nicely delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame orchard fruit, bitter lemon and orange rind notes. Good weight and concentration here with quite a persistent and convincing finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousA blend of Champgains and Vergers with a bare smidgin of Caillerets and Chaumées. The first two managed a good half crop after successful protection. Cool and airy aromas are comprised by notes of green apple, lemon zest and a touch of rosemary oil. Allen Meadows - BurghoundFrom three lieux-dits, the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Chambrées has a tightly-wound bouquet with red apple, lime and crushed stone. The palate is quite intense and weighty in the mouth, rounded like a Meursault yet counterbalanced by a keen line of acidity that maintains focus on the finish. I can imagine this being approachable in its youth. Drink 2024-2032.
