2021 Astobiza TxakoliBasque Country, SPAIN$31. 99Bottle$383.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinAstobiza is produced from the traditional Basque varieties Ondarrabi Zuri (90%) and Ondarrabi Zuri Zerratie (10%). The fruit is Estate grown and vinified using hand-picked fruit, meticulous hand-sorting, and a cool, slow fermentation to preserve its aromatic qualities. The resulting wines are crisp and vibrant, showcasing strong notes of pear, citrus, and stone fruit. The wine's acidity and saline character make it a perfect match for the savory and seafood dishes of the Basque Country.
Other Reviews....
Txacoli is a great summer white, light in body and perfect for pairing with fish or seafood. It's usually a coastal wine, often with a slight spritz. This incarnation comes from further inland, near Rioja – it's fuller bodied than some, and doesn't have a spritz. It's still utterly delicious though, with a brisk, marine aroma, softening on the palate slightly to give juicy green apple flavours. Fresh and vibrant, drink it in its youth. Drink 2022 - 2023.

Alc. 13.5% - 2022 Azores Wine Company Terrantez do PicoAzores, PORTUGAL$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Diam Cork
The Azores Wine Company began in 2010 with winemaker António Maçanita's project to revive the Terrantez do Pico grape, later founded with Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado. They focus on restoring native Azorean grape varieties, mainly on Pico Island. Here, vines grow in rock cracks at the foothills of a volcanic mountain, close enough to the ocean that locals say you can hear “the crabs singing.” The vineyards are shielded from strong salty winds by rock walls called “currais,” which are believed to be 500 to 1,000 years old which allowed Pico to achieve it's UNESCO World Heritage status.
Less than 100 plants of the nearly extinct Terrantez do Pico grape were known outside the agrarian services collection. This unique variety was in grave danger until António Maçanita began its recovery. Today, it is gradually being replanted, which is great news. This wine showcases the potential of this rare grape in an extreme volcanic terroir, resulting in a mineral, salty wine, encouraging others to help save it from extinction. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested into 20kg baskets, mainly from Pico Island with a small portion from São Miguel Island. They undergo whole bunch pressing and natural racking after 12 hours. The first press is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while the second press is fermented in three-year old barrels (30%). Expect a clean citrus color with an intense floral aroma, featuring notes of tea, bergamot, and iodine.

This Verdelho is the original island variety, distinct from mainland Verdelhos. Known for its mineral taste and unique perfume, it offers a teasingly salty palate. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested into 20kg baskets, whole bunch pressed, and naturally racked after 12 hours. Fermentation is spontaneous in small stainless steel tanks, with 30% aged for 6 months in barrels on fine lees. Expect a mineral and salty attack, featuring intense aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit, and guava.

It offers some of the juicy tropical flavours of the grape variety, but it’s also distinctly saline with some pink grapefruity attack through a glossy and creamy texture. Texture is slightly powdery and the finish is juicy, but has a burst of acidity and a whole load of that sea spray/salty digestive drink thing, also closes somewhat stony. Terrific. Recommended. Hello. This is all about fresh apricot, butter menthol, preserved lemon and spice, quite saline too. with a pear juice richness. It’s golden and very juicy, plenty of salt crusted things, slippery but with a bright tangerine acidity, nutty too, tastes in a way like a waxy golden Riesling, but there’s a whole other different character to it. Quite unusual in a way. A rich wine, but also has zip and tang. Sea spray carries on a dried apple and cream sherry finish of good length. So interesting. A little Jura style oxy thing here too. 2023 Babo Pinot GrigioFriuli, ITALY$27. 99Bottle$335.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 1 Years (2024-2025)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinFriuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear and lime mix with hints of dried honey, apple and spice. Fleshy pear and spicy red apple fruits carry good shape across the palate with traces of lime and stony mineral accents lying underneath. Finishes dry with brisk acidity and a stony mineral laced conclusion.

Friuli, 28 year old vines.
Gee, they’ve done very well here. Green melon, pear, cut fennel. Cool feel, a subtle raw almond flavour, fine chalk dust texture, a smattering of perfumed green herb, and a long and lightly grippy finish. Top shelf. Drink 2020-2024.

2018 Babo Pinot GrigioFriuli, ITALY$21. 99Bottle$263.88 DozenCellar: Drink now (2019)ABV: 13%Closure: StelvinAccording to winemaker Justin Bubb the Pinot Grigio from Friuli always has more more textural layers than say the Veneto (highly cropped Pinot Grigio) and Trentino (can be difficult to achieve optimum ripeness) - and a little more skin contact certainly accentuates this.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Showing good elevation are aromas of fresh pear, red apple and honeysuckle trailed by citrus and subtle pebble stone like notes. Light in body but very well rounded and possessing good intensity, the palate is flavoured with pear, apple and subtle dried honey over a citrus and wet stone back drop. Dry crisp finish with a medium to long supplely textured conclusion.

Nurtured from the ground up with sustainable practices and produced in a carboNZero certified winery, the pure and intense flavours of Babydoll reflect the winery’s innovative thinking in tune with the environment.
Individual parcels of Sauvignon Blanc were selected for this wine from Awatere and Wairau Valley vineyards. The parcels were harvested and fermented separately, using selected yeast strains for Sauvignon Blanc to enhance varietal character. A long, cool fermentation took place over four weeks, with the parcels then being blended and stabilised, prior to bottling. -
