This wine is named after Frédéric Emile Trimbach, who became renowned in 1898 for ensuring a new standard of quality and authenticity for Trimbach. For several generations, the south and southeast-facing Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg in Ribeauvillé have been producing this wine. The vines, averaging over 55 years, yield limited quantities. Alongside the Clos Saint Hune release, this is the estate’s most famous wine.

Bright straw. Clean, vibrantly mineral and racy aromas and flavors of green apple, pear and lime. Ripe yet brightly acidic, this exhibits a penetrating quality on the long, juicy, ginger- and mineral-accented finish. Very compact, dense and still youthful Riesling. Outstanding. Drink 2026 - 2039.

Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). Drink 2026 - 2039.

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. Drink now.

Crunchy and juicy with a long, scrumptious mineral laced finish.

Verdicchio is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the Marche region of central Italy. First produced in 1983 this is Umani Ronchi’s flagship Verdicchio. Grapes are selected from four vineyards ranging from 8 to 30 years old, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks and the wine given approximately 5 months lees contact to build its textural attributes.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Lifted lime, pear and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs are followed by some guava and slatey mineral notes. A ripe, floral nose with baked apples and lemons, pressed flowers and a hint of ginger-tinged honey, turning immediately vivid and intense on the medium-bodied palate and driving through the long, tightly packed finish. Yet, it remains a well-proportioned verdicchio with a lovely, silky texture. From organically grown grapes. Fun to drink now.

Like the Montée de Tonnerre this is overtly floral in character on the lightly spiced nose that displays additional aromas of mineral reduction, iodine, lemon peel and pear. There is a really lovely sense of verve suffusing the powerful yet reasonably refined larger-scaled flavors that culminate in an almost chewy bone-dry finish thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract. This muscular effort isn't as refined as the Montée de Tonnerre but it's just as complex and persistent. Drink through 2030+.

The 2018 Chablis 1er Cru La Forest is also showing well, opening in the glass with aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus oil, beeswax, honeycomb and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's fleshy and enveloping, with a lovely spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. Like the Vaillons, this is quite demonstrative for a young Dauvissat Forest, and it will deliver considerable pleasure straight out of the gates. Drink 2021-2040.

The 2018 Chablis Forêts 1er Cru is clearly a step up from the Village Cru, displaying better definition and mineralité, smoke and subtle white chocolate notes, and more energy than the Village Cru. The palate is very well balanced with a spicy, tangy, marmalade-tinged opening. Great depth here, and a powerful, lightly honeyed finish. Excellent. Drink 2022-2030.

Picked in several passages, the last reaching 14 degrees. The wine is as pale in colour as others in the cellar, with an engaging freshness. In fact this does not come over as too ripe at all. There is significant weight here, white fruit, a touch fleshy at the back, a wine which is biding its time.

Forward, lush aromas of melon, guava and ripe apricots touched with honey. The texture is voluptuous, full in body, just enough acidity and a substantial weight enlivened by a subtle, pleasantly bitter note. I knew that this would be too young, and it is, but I was curious anyway. A ripe but nicely fresh fresh nose flashes reasonably good Chablis character on the white-fleshed fruit and floral nose. The sleek, delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the clean, dry and balanced finale where a touch of bitter lemon character slowly emerges. This is clearly still on the way up but it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now, provided that it's served slightly cooler than usual. Try from 2025+.

The 2018 Chablis is showing very well, offering up a pretty bouquet of citrus oil, crisp orchard fruit, oatmeal and beeswax. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and charming, built around ripe but lively acids and concluding with a delicately saline finish. Unusually youthfully charming and open-knit for a Dauvissat Chablis, while remaining very true to the appellation and the domaine's style, this will drink well comparatively young. Drink 2022-2038.

A less elegant but more complex nose reflects plenty of Chablis typicity with its nose of spiced apple, sea breeze, tidal pool, ripe citrus and a touch of the exotic. There is excellent volume to the intense and muscular flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a bitter lemon and anise-suffused finish that offers just a bit more depth. Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.

    $359.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2025-2030)
    ABV: 13.6%
    Closure: Stelvin

Rich, concentrated and creamy textured with a long beautifully shaped finish.

Walnut Block’s Chardonnay, planted in 1996 with the Mendoza clone, is known for its low yields and ‘hen and chicken’ fruit set which provides a high skin-to-juice ratio, thus resulting in a wine that possesses both depth and concentration of flavour. Maturation takes place in French 500 litre oak puncheons with wild yeasts from the vineyard providing a natural fermentation. The wine is left to develop in barrels for a period of 12 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Expressive white peach, nectarine, dried honey and cashew scents sail from the glass with ample intensity followed by some biscuity nougat and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and creamy textured, the palate is layered with white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours. Cashew, biscuity nougat and spice elements are interspersed throughout the back half. Beautifully shaped it finishes long with a lick of underlying freshness.

A Mouth filling Sauvignon Blanc that showcases Marlborough’s classic intensity and drive.

Walnut Block’s Sauvignon Blanc comes from the estates oldest vines which are trellised on the Scott-Henry canopy system allowing maximum light and exposure. The grapes are all hand picked and grown to a yield of 3.5 tonnes per acre. Fruit is first gently whole bunch pressed and predominantly fermented in stainless steel with cultured yeast. A portion (30%) is fermented with wild yeasts in old French Barriques, which contributes additional layers of complexity and texture.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. A mix of herbaceous gooseberry, passionfruit and lime scents sail out of the glass with some grassy asparagus and delicate spice notes lending further interest. Mouth filling passionfruit, gooseberry and citrus flavours are delivered with terrific intensity and drive. Lime, green apple and herbaceous grassy elements extend across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long, mouth watering finish. Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the New Zealand Organic Wine Awards.

    $2760.00 Dozen

It's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.

    Other Reviews....
Compared to the Brunnenhäuschen, Wittmann's 2023 Morstein Riesling GG is light and clear but also still very reduced in the fresh and mineral, even savory and precise nose, which is still restrained in the fruit. Pure and extremely salty on the palate, with a very firm and grippy structure and an almost dry/drying minerality, this Morstein draws saliva. It seems more austere and sinewy here and now than the Brunnenhäuschen, and it's still extremely influenced by limestone. This is a great and promising wine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
In another tasting two days earlier at the domaine, the 2023 Morstein showed a wonderfully chalky, elegantly fruity and balanced nose. Pure and with citrusy freshness as well as chalky salinity, this is a ravishingly fine, elegant and clever Morstein that is light-years away from the abundance and power of the 2000s and early 2010s. This is vibrant and stimulating salty and truly reminiscent of Champagnes from the Côte des Blancs. A magnificent Morstein! Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs still flickers with the slightest flinty reduction on its cool nose, but with air, lemon moves in and stays center stage. The palate is just as lemony and immediately projects cooling, moist, chalky depth. The palate is slender, delving deep into that chalkiness. Scented with lemon and bedded on soothing, citric yeast, the finish is totally zesty, precise, strait-laced, pristine and very long. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2060.

Nothing is more fundamental to the world than the interplay of light and darkness, and this wine brings that into your glass in a completely compelling way. There’s an incredible intensity to the minerality of this dry riesling. It’s a giant of orginality, but lies at the upper edge of medium-bodied, resulting in a fantastic sense of lightness. Extraordinary focus and precision in the enchanting and totally fascinating finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release.

Clear, bright, elegant and fresh, with spicy citrus fruit and a distinct lime and saline note, Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG starts strong! Elegant, dense and creamy on the palate, it has a zesty character but is also balanced and noble in texture. Pleasantly round, juicy and intense and always supported by its limestone texture, this is an excellent Riesling from Westhofen! The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs comes with notes of lemon balm and chervil, deeply scented and deliciously herbal. The palate gushes with coolness, like a mountain brook over stone, sinking deeper and deeper into the cool limestone with its serene, bright, lemony scent and the merest creamy edge—rather seductive. Pure, ripe lemon zest shines on the finish. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2055.

How can a mysterious labyrinth be so delightful? Because at every turn there’s a new aspect of the wine’s beauty. The incredible tension between the flinty and floral aspects of this wine makes it remarkably energetic for a dry riesling with this level of concentration. Then comes an astonishing Amalfi lemon freshness in the super-long and precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Aulerde Riesling GG continues the top performances of the last five years. It has a deep, concentrated, fresh and citrusy nose with substantial saltiness and still some reduction, reminiscent of clay, lime and lime chutney, and a dense and tightly woven palate. This is a fleshy, juicy and concentrated, very youthful but elegant and balanced Aulerde with great potential and long-lasting minerality and savoriness, but it's also generous and elegant in its fruit expression. The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from vines planted in the rich marls Aulerde in 1949 and 1951, at a then-unusual density of 8,000 vines per hectare. Wittmann says that this is the earliest ripening site, yielding tiny, ripe grapes year after year. A touch of mellow, ripe, yellow apple appears alongside gentle lemon on the nose. The palate also has that beautiful yellow apple spice and lovely juiciness and texture. The serene and smooth yet hearty palate radiates coolness. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2050.

Bold, compact and concentrated, this astonishing dry riesling GG makes a very serious statement. It also remains cool and restrained, with a glittering thread of flint winding through the textural complexity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Try to be patience, because this is delicious now, but the tension in the extremely long finish and the youthfulness of the aromas speak of wine with decades of life ahead of it. Wittmann's 2022 Aulerde Westhofen Riesling GG is super clear, refined and elegant on the deep and pure nose that is also intense due to fruit from old vines that were planted in 1949 and 1959. It's slightly reductive but attractively so and intermingled with discreet yeasty and mocha notes. On the palate, this is a very pure and mineral, firmly structured Riesling with concentration and power yet still a somewhat astringent finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1949 at an unusual density of 8,000 vines/ha in the rich marls of Aulerde. The vineyard still cannot be navigated by tractor in its narrow rows. The nose is vivid and direct with lifted lemon and flinty yeast. With air, the lemon attains all the richness of the ripest Amalfi lemon. The palate is concentrated but very fluid, compact, streamlined and rounded. Lemon freshness tingles around the edges as the wine transports you deeper and deeper into the soil. Phenolics lend structure to relative richness. The 2022 is concentrated, pure and shows subtle length. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

All the spices of the bazaar are married to generous yet fresh exotic fruit. Only medium-bodied for a site that leans more towards the rich and full-bodied direction. Bottled earlier on the day I tasted it (!), the 2022 Kirchspiel Westhofen Riesling GG is pure, intense and refined but also untamed on the chalky nose. Silky, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a rather lean, enormously saline Kirchspiel with a citric finish. This is a radiant and puristic limestone Riesling with salivating salinity and piquancy on the finish. The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs is from this east-facing site, with just 30cm of topsoil on limestone. A slight reduction marks the shy nose. The palate is slender but concentrated. A notion of green and yellow apple peel insinuates itself on the textured palate, presenting apple skin - perhaps this wine's guise of the phenolics - alongside the mouthwatering fruit that hovers between apple and citrus and a notion of lemon balm. The mid-palate is concentrated, very straight-shooting, linear and driven. The 2022 is cooling and has much energy. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Grosses Gewächs abuts the Morstein, but it is slightly more elevated with its limestone overlaid with terra rossa rich in iron oxide. Flinty reduction still holds sway on the nose. However, the palate comes with a smooth, serene and gentle texture of lemon zest bedded on soft, pillowy yeast, yet with many directions and zing, driving forward with gentle force. The finish tapers to beautiful, lemon-pervaded slenderness. The phenolic grip manifests on the finish with beautiful finesse and zesty, citric definition. The 2022 is a lovely and intriguing mix of obliqueness and directness. It's very long and very fine in the face of 2022. Wow. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The Brunnenhäuschen site is directly adjacent to the more famous Morstein and has a similar soil structure: reddish, with clay marl, limestone and water-bearing layered limestone rocks in the subsoil, which showed great advantage in the warm and dry 2022. This gives the Riesling an almost cool-seeming brilliance, with a slight smokiness over the apple and citrus fruits. The acidity is smooth and ripe, but also powerful. On the palate, it also makes a strong impression: intensive and lasts incredibly long. Drink 2028 - 2050.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

    Other Reviews....
The bottled 2021 La Mailloche Chardonnay, from a vintage that was challenging for the grape, showed really well. It has a moderate 13% alcohol and is very clean, with no reduction. It was cropped from a very cold year with small yields and aged for two years in barrique. It has vibrant acidity and a citrus character, sharper and fresher. As a comparison, he uncorked a bottle from 2005, which showed a profile of older Chardonnay, with a golden color, reductive and flinty, very stony, super austere and chalky. It is incredibly savory and delicious, with the bitterness that gives freshness, even in a warm vintage. It's still fresh. Drink 2024-2032.

Based in Ligny-les-Chatel on the northern fringe of the Chablis appellation, Domaine Garnier & Fils has been family owned since 1789 with brothers Jerome and Xavier Garnier currently overseeing the winemaking and management. Jerome works the vineyards, while Xavier makes the wines, and together they are leading a group of newer producers finding their voice in the northern most part of Chablis. Organic farming is practiced in the vineyards, and fermentation occurs with natural yeasts before the wines are matured in a mix of very large barrels and stainless steel tanks.
Brilliant pale straw colour with straw green tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping out of the glass are scents of pear infused with a mix of wet stone and smoky mineral notes. Hints of dried honey and oyster shell follow on. Delicious pear and lime fruits carry lovely textural shape across the palate with notions of wet slate, subtle dried honey and flinty oyster shell like characters lurking underneath. Brisk integrated acidity. Excellent concentration with the long, well proportioned finish infused with a saline like minerality.

As is usually the case chez Colin, this is the most elegant wine among these 1ers with its cool, pure and airy nose of lemon peel, mineral reduction, apple, pear and soft floral nuances. There is very good concentration to the seductively textured but precise medium-bodied flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the saline and strikingly persistent finish. Note well however that this chiseled effort is very firm and is a wine that is going to require extended patience.

(Colin's vines are located just across the road from his Charmes and a bit closer to the village of Meursault): Bright, pale yellow-green. Wonderfully delicate aromas of underripe pineapple, white peach, flowers, spices and crushed rock. Denser than Colin's other Meursault premier crus but its uncanny thickness is fully buffered by dusty, palate-staining minerality. This very pure wine shows the penetrating energy of a tungsten filament. Consistent from start to endless finish. There's still an impression of sweetness here as the wine has two grams per liter of residual sugar, but Colin suspects that one of his three 350-liter barrels has not yet completely finished its sugar fermentation.

Mario Schiopetto was the man considered responsible for bringing fame to Friuli’s white wines. He pioneered wine preservation techniques in the wine making process, something lacking in the region in the 1970’s - cold and anti-oxidative handling, epitomised by the German handling of Riesling - along with the more 'French' technique of elevating their wines in a careful, more oxidative, texture-building manner.
Schiopetto’s standout variety is Friulano which sees 7-8 months on lees resulting in a wine that’s rich in texture and flavour with an abundance of wild floral and almond notes on the nose, supported on the palate with rich stone fruits and refreshing acidity.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green shaded edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear, lime and green apple gently infused with aromatic herbs are trailed by some stony mineral notes. Elegant and racy, pear and green apple fruits meld into lime, fresh herbs and slatey mineral characters on the back half. Riverstone like mouth feel finishing dry with zippy acidity and a long snappy flinty mineral laced aftertaste.

The 2018 Chardonnay VGW is pure and sunny with pineapple, wet rock, pear, and delicate oak spice. The palate is ripe and long, with fresh peach, orange blossom, and warming spice. This is an exceptional and layered wine with great purity to drink over the next 10-15 years. Drink 2022 - 2037.

The VGW (Very Good White) is crafted from Dijon clone Chardonnay from the Eola-Amity Hills. The fruit was picked at 22 deg. Brix, despite advice to let it hang. The decision was wise - the resulting wine is balanced and elegant. Despite a pronounced reductive edge from the 'Black Chardonnay' technique of consultant Pierre Milleman, the wine is expressive and deep. Initially, the wine was a bit closed, but aromas of ripe pear, acacia flower, candle wax, and hay develop with time. The texture is rich and broad, with a depth that suggests that it will age for decades. Drink 2021 - 2031.

Limpid straw-gold. Vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of peach nectar, Anjou pear and Meyer lemon carry a bright floral overtone. Juicy and densely packed, displaying a suave interplay of richness and vivacity to the citrus and orchard fruit, honeysuckle, buttered toast and saffron flavors. Picks up smoky lees and vanilla nuances with air and shows excellent clarity and solid thrust on a strikingly long, penetrating finish that echoes the mineral note and betrays no rough edges. A very complex and powerful chardonnay with ripe-nectarine, lemon and grapefruit aromas, laced with cool, stony notes, as well as flint and attractively restrained oak. The palate has mouthwatering, intense fruit with such attractively concentrated, pithy-grapefruit and white-peach flavors with beautifully wound flesh that pervades the crisp, long and gently toasty finish. Really superb chardonnay. Drink or hold.

(Jobard picked a full crop of grapes at the beginning of the harvest): Sexy scents of lemon drop and wild herbs. Tactile, juicy and spicy in the mouth, showing excellent lift and mineral energy to the flavors of citrus fruits, ginger and minerals. This wine is not lower in acidity after its malolactic fermentation than the 2015 was, noted Jobard. Finishes lively and long, with an intriguing saline nuance. A lovely vin de terroir in the making.

2022 Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg Chenin Blanc
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $170. 00
    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

This extraordinary 100% Chenin Blanc hails from South Africa’s northernmost wine region, the arid Citrusdal Mountain WO, on the west bank of the Olifants River. Specifically, the fruit is drawn from three parcels of 90-year-old, ungrafted bush vines on the decomposed, red sandstone slopes of the Skurfberg (which means ‘rigid mountain’). Planted between 1940 and 1955, these are three immaculately farmed vineyards that have never been treated with herbicide or chemical fertilizers.

Fruit from each vineyard is vinified separately, basket-pressed, then transferred to old casks for natural fermentation. Following 12 months on lees, the wine is blended, then returned to the same casks for a further six months before being bottled directly from foudre.

    Other Reviews....
Coming from the most northerly aspect of the range, the 2022 Old Vine Series Skurfberg opens with a waxy nose and notions of dusty yellow apple and Meyer lemon with white melon. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate reveals a fine mineral tension with a delightful kiss of sea spray before displaying a classic, food-friendly phenolic bitterness. The wine glides into a long, lingering and subtly spiced finish. Only 4,200 bottles were produced. Drink 2023 - 2037.

The 2022 Skurfberg is pure Chenin Blanc from Citrusdal Mountains at 640m altitude, whole bunch pressed into old foudres. It has a pristine bouquet with yellow plum, crushed rock and a touch of lanolin, with hints of orange blossom coming through with time. The palate is lightly spiced on the entry with touches of stem ginger and a perfect line of acidity, gently building in the mouth towards an entrancing livewire finish that lingers long in the mouth. Thrilling. Drink 2025-2050.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

    Jancis Robinson

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.
