The fruit came off the Bremerton vineyard in Langhorne Creek, with 72 hours on skins before pressing to neutral Burgundy barrels; lees stirring was frequent. This is a coolly-fruited expression of the grape, with lifted herbal notes of pea tendril and mint, along with sugar snaps, lime, green apple, cool stone fruit and a gravelly, mineral-like note. There’s an appealing Irpinia via Sancerre quality this vintage, but a little time in bottle is needed to swell out the flavour and texture. Drink by 2028.

    Atlantico Reserva Solera Rum (700ml)
    DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A brand created in Florida by two entrepreneurs, Brandon Lieb and Aleco Azqueta, and sponsored by Enrique Iglesias, the popular Spanish singer. Instead of being a distillery, Atlantico rum is produced by an independent bottler - Oliver & Oliver using the solera technique that includes rums up to ten years old. However the recipe begins with both molasses-based rums and rums made with fresh cane juice, separately aged for 2-3 years before blending and resting for another two years. The solera follows, and just prior to bottling a small amount of unaged Aguardiente is added for a finishing touch. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Starts sweet and fruity with pronounced vanila ice cream and caramel. More sublte boiled sweets, apricot jam, cinnamon and hot pepper spice. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com

Atlantico Reserva offers a rich, buttery nose, with popcorn and a creamy toffee. In the background is a faint grassiness. The palate is drier and oaky, with a lighter take on those buttery notes, and an earthy, mineral layer. Some of that original creaminess comes back on a smooth, warm finish with a touch of caramel and vanilla. 83 points - distiller.com

2023 Standish The Relic Shiraz Viognier
    Barossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.9%
    Closure: Cork

The Standish Wine Company, founded in 1999 by sixth-generation Barossa vigneron Dan Standish, produces ultra-limited, single-vineyard Shiraz from dry-grown, old-vine sites across sub-regions like Greenock, Marananga, Krondorf, and Eden Valley. Using wild fermentation, whole-bunch inclusion, foot treading, basket pressing, and aging in French oak, Standish crafts powerful yet refined wines that express purity, intensity, and a strong sense of place. Highly sought-after and released in tiny quantities, each bottling captures the essence of its vineyard with precision and flair.

By all reports, the 2023 vintage in the Barossa was shaped by a cold, wet winter and spring, followed by a cool, dry summer and a notably late harvest. It was a challenging season in the vineyard, yet early impressions suggest the resulting wines are remarkably poised and pure. Standish’s 2023 releases, in particular, are said to show extraordinary finesse and aromatic detail, with the usual power and depth intact. Careful adjustments to whole bunch use and shorter élevage have delivered wines that are intense yet fresh—an impressive result from a difficult year.

Known for its exotic perfume and silken texture, The Relic is plush and opulent. Co-fermented with a small portion of Viognier, it combines expressive aromatics with deep, brooding Barossa fruit.
    Alc. 14.9%

    Other Reviews....
The 2023 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier is texturally velvety and smooth; that may sound like a base observation to make, and perhaps it is, but the experience is overwhelmingly silky/ethereal this year. Apricot blossoms, sweet roasted bone marrow, hung deli meat, crushed rocks, licorice, anise and raspberry mingle in the glass, while the palate gives us these characters tenfold, bolstered and grounded by savory tannins. What more is there to say about this, other than that it is sensational? I find this to be an incredibly consistent wine year after year, with my scores rarely deviating too much from "excellent." This is among the very best Shiraz Viognier's in this country; it's a treasure. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025 - 2043.
    98 Points
Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Relic, 98.5/1.5% shiraz/viognier is sourced from the Hongell Family vineyard in Krondorf and immediately presents itself beautifully with dark and red plum, dark cherry and indeed, a stone fruit component that sits obliquely to the deeper fruit on display. A smaller percentage of whole bunch this year but an exotically spiced trail is still apparent in the wine, like fading footsteps in wet sand. There's a char siu meaty aspect in the mix, too, with dried meadow flowers and a real sense of place; the tannins are like powdered sand and there is a sapidness apparent in its cadence. There's only a handful of producers in the region that produce wines with this level of intricacy. It's like bonsai winemaking, capturing nature and all its harvest-borne detail with a sense of balance and proportion. Tremendous drinking. Drink by 2042.

    Other Reviews....
The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish. The use of concrete egg in the fermentation/maturation stages lends the wine a sense of purity and finesse. It supports a core of crystalline fruit that is wrapped in earthy, grainy tannin and woven together with threads of saline acidity. It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision. Standish performs somewhat like a Burgundian producer—he works with one grape (I suppose two, if you count the small inclusion of Viognier in the Relic) to express different vineyard sites, soil types and elevations. There's no "declassified" fruit in these wines, no flow-on opportunities to other cuvées, just "make or break" viticulture and winemaking. The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking. This 2023 Schubert, despite the cool and wet conditions, is a testament to Standish's clarity of vision. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The '23 release of the Schubert Theorem is just gorgeous. It's kinetic. The purest of plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits stretch impossibly long on the palate, with impressive density and a real sense of grace to its travel. The edges are smooth and round here and there is a calmness as it glides across the palate, the tannins more in the powdery spectrum (and I'm sure this comes from the portion that spends its gestation in a concrete Nomblot egg). Bunch (50% or thereabouts) is bang on here, lending a golden ratio of spice, sinew and texture. But man, that pure rolling swell of fruit is the star; this is a wonderfully composed wine. Other Reviews....
Following on from the perfect 2022 release, I find myself opening this wine with a fair bit of excitement. I called Dan Standish one day in early May 2023 (I think to ask my questions about the wines I was tasting), and he was in the vineyard up in Eden Valley, picking the Lamella fruit for this wine. 2023 was a wet, cool season, so much so that the fruit for this cuvée was picked in May. Still, aromatically, the 2023 Lamella Shiraz leads with sumac and orange peel, fresh raspberry, black cherry, licorice, petrichor, wet asphalt and river stones. Sandalwood and rose petals follow through the finish. This is velvety and grainy, supple and pliable. The tannins are dry and silky, and they perfectly balance the intensity of sweet/spicy fruit in the mouth. This wine is a clear example of why you must back a producer over a vintage, because a good producer will triumph no matter the conditions. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025 - 2045.

This year's Lamella, an Eden Valley wine, sees the majority of the shiraz sourced from the epic Stonegarden vineyard down near Springton, with a smaller proportion of fruit from Hutton Vale. Last year it was the other way around, but vintages are like that. The fruit, again at its core pure dark plum and blue fruits, has some redder shades in play, with plenty of exotic spice, meadow herbs, purple floral tones and that Eden Valley sage thing going on and the thinest wisp of spearmint rising from the depths. I love this wine's powdered granitic heft and mineral cadence, the wink of Campari and bunchy nuance done just right and its composed 'Eden Valleyness'. It's lovely. Drink by 2042.

40/30/30% negroamaro/mataro/touriga nacional; harvested on the same day and co-fermented; matured in seasoned French oak for six months. Savoury and spicy, with preserved black cherry, dried olive, black plum skin, panforte spicing, chinotto, star anise, umeboshi. Modest of weight, and from varieties that can be fulsome and gruff, this is elegant and food friendly, with a fine line of tannin and a fanning of cherry-scented fruitfulness marking the finish. This is also excellent chilled. Lovely.

The 2020 Syrah is elegant and spicy—the whole-bunch component lends a spice and a skeleton (I always mean to say rachis, yet I censor myself to skeleton each time) and a structure that is most attractive. The wine is concentrated and silken, with a flow and ebb in the mouth that speaks volumes to the pedigree of fruit resource and clever handling in the winery. At this stage, the oak is still obvious in the glass, however having tasted the 2019 alongside, I can confirm that it recedes into the fruit like the ocean over sand with time. In my opinion, the best McLaren Vale Shirazes/Syrahs display a balance of sweet fruit and meat; it's a challenge to foster both parts of the grape in the bottle, but when it's done, it is a marvel. As this is. Drink 2022-2032.

Clarendon and Seaview sourcing, harvested across staggered windows to impart textural detail and freshness. Fermented wild with gentle pumpovers. 50% bunches in the mix. Basket pressed to 500L French wood (55% new). The end result, as with all wines here, is one of consummate class and refinement. While the grenache is the leading light, this sits comfortably in 2nd place. Carnal spice, pepper grind, salami and blue to darker fruits are strung across bow of saline tannic tension, rolled into a firm gristly knot. Superlative grape tannins, mind you, extracted with a confident aplomb. The oak, a mere echo. This glimpses the finest crus of the northern Rhône through the lens of the Vale. Exciting. Exceptional. Rewarding. Drink by 2030.

Whiskey Hunt Australia's third and final Old Forester single barrel pick.

Back in 2019 Whiskey Hunt Australia did what few outside the US could — secure three Old Forester Single Barrels, handpicked from their legendary Louisville, Kentucky warehouses. Because the volumes were so small they only made it to a handful of retailers. Old Forester subsequently changed their international barrel pick policies and slammed the brakes on future single barrel selections. WHA only just managed to sneak this one through. So for the time being, it's the last of its kind, or to be more precise, the only single barrel officially bottled outside the US since 2021 (the distillery will instead be offering a 100 proof and an unfiltered, straight from the cask barrel strength option). We're told Old Forester use heat cycling in their rickhouses to maintain consistency, so if you enjoyed WHA's previous selections, they should be pretty close to what we’ve sampled here. Ripe peaches, soft rye and banana bread feature on the nose with a hints of bubble gum. For all of its high proof, this is remarkably easy-going with supple peach and light vanilla flavours framed by sweet cinnamon and peppery wood spices. The balance is so good, you don't really need water. It's uncomplicated, affable, heart warming Bourbon that's certainly above average, and with enough body, depth and oiliness to set on repeat without losing interest. Alternatively, add minimal ice for maximum easy-drinking. 204 bottles imported. Distilled from a mash bill of 72% Corn, 18% Rye and10% Malted Barley. 50% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... That classic Old Forester sweet banana on the nose. Palate hits with peanut brittle, caramel, and a balanced mid-level sweetness. Not overloaded with vanilla — instead, there’s a subtle touch of toasted oak. The finish is that classic oak-driven with a satisfying lift of spice. Super easy drinking.

    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Getting the botanical balance right in a 'classic' gin can be tricky. Too many ingredients and it can lose direction and lack style. Too few and the gin can taste one dimensional. Mobius Distlling have succeeded in creating a signature expression defined by juniper (like a London Dry should be) with a hint of citrus in reserve. The aroma is soft and pure, infused with notes of crushed pine buds exuding a peel-like freshness, later joined by hints of cardamom and white pepper. The taste is silky, creamy, smooth and lemony with bright juniper and warming peppers finished by a gentle peel tang. Relaxed and refreshing on its own, this middle-weighter makes a lovely G&T, but go easy with the mixing as it can be quickly overwhelmed. The distiller's recommend a light tonic, garnished with a lime wedge. 43% Alc./Vol.

2020 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili Riserva Barbaresco
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $190. 00
    Bottle
    $2280.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.5%
    Closure: Cork

Asili has created some of the greatest Barbaresco over the years and has a strong worldwide following. The main part of the vineyard is a protected bowl facing South/West, further away from the river and the valley influence with a warmer and less breezy microclimate during most of the summer. Usually quite closed in its youth it opens up slowly with impeccable complexity and style. A classic Barbaresco, and also one of the most distinctive vineyards of the region.

    Other Reviews...
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili shows terrific balance and freshness thanks to cold evenings that lasted to the end of September. Asili is not far from Pora, and both sites share similar sandy soils. However, Asili is cut off from the warm air currents of the Tanaro River. This wine is more profound as a result, with soft tannins, a linear texture and well-defined mouthfeel. The 2020 vintage is more accessible overall, but you get the profound depth that Nebbiolo offers. This was the fifth of nine wines presented in the Riserva series. Therefore, it falls somewhere in the middle of the power continuum in terms of intensity and richness. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is gorgeous. It offers a beguiling mix of intense fruit and supporting structure. A wine of depth and complexity, Asili has a lot of everything. It is clearly a step or two above many of the wines in this range. Today, the 2020 comes across as a bit somber, but that may partly be a reflection of its recent bottling. There's gorgeous depth and resonance in the Asili. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a slightly darker ruby color and is a bit firmer in character compared to Paje' and Mucagotta. The Asili has the most depth as well and draws you in on the nose with notes of black cherries, hints of sweet licorice, fresh leather. The palate, which is seamless and in line with the nose, also captures the polished, smooth, ripe tannins, and it’s long on the palate, with a very slowly floating finish. I’m impressed with the polish and evenness that both the Paje and the Asili are currently expressing. Drink this over the coming 20 years. Drink 2025-2045.

From a not widely known vineyard, Montefico sits half way between Ovello and Montestefano and it is often compared to the latter because of their similar soil (high calcium) and their close proximity. Its warm - full south - exposure is mitigated by the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels into the narrow valley between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. First released in 1970, it produces classic Barbaresco wines that could be seen as austere when young but with incredible complexity behind the tannins.

    Other Reviews...
Two standouts from the 2020 vintage are Montefico and Asili. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico comes from a site that is distant from the warm air that travels through the Tanaro River Valley and is closed within an amphitheater. This is a beautiful vineyard that looks toward the village of Neive and has active limestone soils. The wine is especially compact in texture and has a distinctly herbal note, with dried rosemary and lavender, that gives it a Mediterranean or botanical feel. The palate delivers a brief moment of softness, but otherwise the wine is structured and rich. Drink 2026-2050.

A complex, beautifully layered wine, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico expresses so many of the attributes that make the wines from this vintage and site so intriguing. The bouquet alone is wonderfully complex. Dried herbs, mint, pine, tobacco and cedar open first, leading to a core of chiseled dark-toned fruit. A vertical, structured Barbaresco, the Montefico is superb. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is a deep red color, and the nose opens to notes of crushed rosemary, darker crushed stones, and black cherries. The palate is rich in sapidity, saturating the senses with ripe tannins, even acidity, and a long finish. It feels like a more profound and compelling wine in the range for this vintage. Bravo. Montestefano is one of the vineyards with higher concentrations of calcium in the soil; this gives the wine a powerful tannic structure. The extra warmth of the South facing slope is responsible for the full body and meaty texture, resulting in a deep flavoured wine with ripe fruit and tannins. In a wetter season it is usually the last to be picked among the Barbaresco vineyards. This is probably the Barbaresco that reminds more of Barolo where flavours of tar and roses prevail. A truly wonderful Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate with a classy finish that lingers without overwhelming the senses.

    Other Reviews...
Normally, Produttori del Barbaresco President Aldo Vacca puts Montefico, Rabajà, Muncagota and Montestefano at the end of his flight of Riservas. But in this year's presentation, he put the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano fourth to last instead of last. This wine is usually the darkest and the most austere in the series. However, the 2020 does not live up to its usual flavor profile. The aromas are quite ripe, even overripe, with prune and raisin. The tannins are soft, leading to a succulent and chewy mouthfeel. My recommendation is to give this wine a shorter drinking window. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the most elegant, polished wines in this range. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and cedar are beautifully lifted. The tannins are remarkably polished for a young, recently bottled Riserva. I admire its poise and elegance. This is an especially refined edition of the Montestefano. In 2020, the mix of vineyards is a bit younger than in the past, as one of the blocks of older vineyards was replanted and not used. If I could have only one of the Riservas in 2020, this would be it! Drink 2025-2035.

In this year and at this stage, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is not as full as the Montefico, which is the reverse of most years. A deep ruby/red color, it reveals notes of black raspberries, toasted spice, crushed flowers, and sweet earth. The palate is lush and inviting, with a refined and approachable feel. It has a lot more approachability at this stage than you’d expect, with velvety tannins and a long, floating finish. While the palate has less weight, it has an underlying nervous tension, with mouthwatering notes of sanguine, iron-rich mineral accents. Drink 2025-2045.

The Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.

    Other Reviews...
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is quite powerful and ample but not fully integrated as of yet. This vineyard site is located in a warm growing area, and you do feel the heat of the vintage in terms of the ripeness of the bouquet and the softness of the tannins. This wine paints with broad brush strokes, offering blackberry, plum and spice. It needs another year or two to find better focus. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota comes across as somewhat austere today, which is pretty atypical. Floral, mint and white pepper lend notable aromatic brilliance. Deceptively medium in body, the 2020 offers plenty of drive. Floral, savory and mineral notes extend the intense, saline finish. I am curious to taste this again with more time in bottle. Coming from a southeast-facing exposure with a cooler climate, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is a bit lighter by comparison and has more lift aromatically as well, with notes of rosemary, mint, redcurrants, and dried earth. It has a more linear feel and captures a wonderful, refreshing energy, with finer but defined tannins and ripe citrus and apricot on the long finish. I think this is going to be one to watch and could potentially exceed the rest of the wines in the range thus far. Drink 2027-2057.

Ovello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.

    Other Reviews...
The Ovello vineyard has some northern exposures and generally represents a cooler growing site. You can expect intense fruit flavors and more prominent tannins as a result. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello fits the bill. Vine growth starts much later and usually lasts longer to produce dark intensity and bold aromas in the wines. In the cold years, the tannins can be aggressive, but in the hot years like 2020, they show better balance. This wine offers ferrous notes of iron and rusty nail followed by cherry-driven sweetness. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a massive, packed wine. Graphite, crushed rocks, dried herbs and cedar open first. Ovello tends to produce a more linear style of Barbaresco, and that is very much the case here as well. However, the 2020 also possesses notable depth and layers in the mid-palate. It's a gorgeous wine in the making. Drink 2025-2035.

The nose of the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello offers a more woodsy profile, with aromas of pine, leather, black raspberries, sweet floral perfume, and licorice candies. The palate is compact and nervous, with dark mineral accents, refreshing, ripe acidity, and a long finish. It is going to benefit from another couple of years and show its best over the following 10, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve for 15-20 years either. Pajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.

    Other Reviews...
The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins. In fact, this was the second of nine wines served in a flight that started with the lightest Riservas and ended with the most powerful wines. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is a classic wine from this site. Deeply spiced and balsamic notes meld into a core of dark, sepia-toned Nebbiolo fruit. The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Paje' pours a deeper red hue and is polished on the nose with aromas of black cherries, candied berries, polished leather, sweet herbs, and balsamic herbs. Usually, this site has a brighter, more floral character, but here it has a bit more richness, with an outstanding balance of savoriness, velvety textured tannins, and dark, stony underpinnings seamlessly weaving together through the long finish. Proximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, as well as a relative warmth in the early morning hours due to its proximity to the valley floor. The slightly higher soil fertility here gives to the wine a smoother character, with soft tannins and aromas that usually tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza.

    Other Reviews...
This is the first wine served in a flight of nine that increase in intensity and power moving forward. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pora opens to a medium-light color with garnet highlights. Aromas include wild cherry, cassis and blue flower. You also get hints of crushed limestone. The Pora vineyard is near the Tanaro River Valley, where warm air accumulates, and the vines are planted in fertile soils. The extra heat and humidity of the area makes for accessible wines that are ready to drink and are less complex overall. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is aromatic, effusive and quite charming. Crushed flowers, spice, leather, tobacco and cedar lend notable inner sweetness. Rabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lies between the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North. The meeting of these two different soils give Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure.

    Other Reviews...
In this vintage, the Rabajà was served last in a series of nine Riservas; that's because it shows the most structure and power over a very defined and sharp mouthfeel. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is streamlined and tight and a wine of enormous energy. The fruit is crunchy and tight with cassis and blackberry. A pretty mineral note defines Rabajà, giving it a chalky or powdery sensations on the close. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another stellar wine in this range. Dark and explosive, the 2021 possesses notable richness to match its dark, brooding personality. Black cherry, plum, leather, cloves, menthol, licorice and gravel explode onto the palate. The 2020 will require a measure of patience, but it has a ton of potential. Drink 2025-2035.

Not far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.

    Other Reviews...
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes from an area that is further removed from the Tanaro River and has southwestern exposures. It shows a typical profile for Nebbiolo with rich fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and textural volume that is delivered with ample blackberry, blackcurrant and spice. The character of this wine is generous and rich. There is plenty of meat on these bones. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is pretty closed today, which is probably a very good sign for its aging prospects, as this site tends to produce wines that are more open than this. Founded in 2017 by Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean is located within the Drimnin Estate on a remote west Highland peninsula with spectacular views over Mull and Tobermory. The name is an abbreviation of 'Neachneohain', which translates as 'Queen of Spirits' from Gaelic. Like Ardnamurchan, an innovative and eco-friendly approach is at the heart of the distillery and its team. 2021 may well be one of the most significant in its early history: It was the year Nc'nean became the UK’s first distillery to gain Net Zero status with carbon dioxide emissions as close to zero as possible - twenty years ahead of the Scotch industry target. They're certified organic, powered by 100% renewable energy and recycle 99.97% of their waste. The whisky is also bottled in 100% recycled glass and is vegan friendly. Batches of around 5000 units are bottled at 46% and are both non chill-filtered and natural in colour.

Other reviews... [Batch 18 tasted / circa 2022] Right, bad luck, it's 2/3 ex-STRised red wine, now STR doesn't obligatorily make the whiskies winey, it often doesn't in my experience, so there is hope… Colour: straw. Nose: indeed, no obvious wine, but there are berries, probably rather elder, also peach syrup and orange blossom honey. Some Californian IPA. Well,  a style of beer that was to be found in California back in the days, but the whole world seems to be making this style today. Then a little sweet bread and some vanilla. Fine, soft, fruity, with also quite some hay. Mouth: very sweet, clearly 'flavoured'. Szechuan pepper, tangerine, oranges, hay wine, the usual cinnamon and ginger, some herbal teas (rooibos, peach leaves), vanilla and zests... Finish: medium, sweet, with more citrus, which always works, I think. Comments: clearly fruitier than the only earlier batch I've tried, which was #7. Pretty 'modern world', very cask-driven, certainly well made. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

    $149. 99
    Bottle

    ABV: 57.9%

Even though this is a NAS release, you can expect Glengyle's whisky-making team are refining their blending skills and introducing older material into each batch. So it makes sense that some tasters are describing this as one of the best, if not the best batch in the series to date. Drawn from 90% Bourbon casks with the remainder out of Sherry, complexity will be a strong point. The Kilkerran style we've come to know and love includes notes of key lime pie, toasted rye bread and peat smoke, toasted marshmallows and campfire embers with hints of vanilla and custard - and of course, that Campbeltown smokiness carrying through to the finish, along with a mineral note to round things off. Even after dilution, these natural strength expressions can remain beautifully fresh. If you're partial to the uber-peaty, invigorating coastal blast that comes with Longrow at its finest, this will be for you. In line with previous releases, Batch 11 weighs in at 57.9% Alc./Vol and comes bottled non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... A true experience for the senses – powerfully peppery, with a comforting sweetness and the unmistakable Campbeltown DNA. The combination of intense glow, fruity freshness, and creamy depth makes this a whisky that shows character without being overpowering. ...Both batch 9 (WF 86) and batch 10 (WF 85) were excellent, though perhaps ever so slightly immature, a tad on the rough side for my taste, but let’s admit it, we were nitpicking. Colour: straw. Nose: it’s the 16-year-old, only younger, livelier, and above all far more medicinal. With gallons of iodine tincture and mercurochrome, sea water and a splash of lemon balm infusion, one could almost use this as a balm, an anaesthetic or indeed as a repellent against mosquitoes and, more crucially, midges. Well, no guarantees there. We like it. With water: well now, it rounds out and softens completely, but also brings seaweed and, above all, plenty of sage and tarragon. Worth trying in a béarnaise sauce. Mouth (neat): this slaps you twice across the face, a proper one-two. Brimming with salt, ashes, camphor, iodine tincture, lime, oysters and smoked fish. With water: a more classical peater, though still immensely salty, with notes of machine oil and even penetrating oil. Could come in handy. Finish: very long, with salt, lemon and bitter almonds. Black pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: hey, we’re moving forward! A fine beast, really. We should set up a blind tasting, twelve young Longrows versus twelve young Kilkerrans. Glenallachie Meikle Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

"For a 5 year-old this is complex and rewarding. My favourite so far. " - whiskynotes.be

Producing peated whiskies was always in the pipeline for Master Distiller, Billy Walker. The dream is now a reality. His new series named 'Meikle Tor' (which means "Big pursuit") is a first for Glenallachie and has had a staggered release in Australia. Finally, most of the range is here, (mostly) differentiated by cask type, including The Original One, The Chinquapin One and now The Sherry One - the latter considered a high point for value. Some say it even beats Lagavulin 16 year old. Initially aged in American oak followed by PX and Oloroso Sherry puncheons for three years, the spirit is peated to 35 PPM. Walker employs a remarkably long 160-hour fermentation and uses mainland peat from St. Fergus (think Ardmore), imbuing a sweet and smoky profile. Production takes place for around six weeks per year. The whisky is bottled at 48% and is non-chill filtered, further enhancing the bang for your buck.

Other reviews... It’s that warming, soothing smoke acting as a through line for all these whiskies so far. The Sherry One is enhanced by the ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro Ximénez puncheons. Punching above its weight. - wordsofwhisky.com

...Overall the Oloroso and PX puncheons are quite balanced and the peat is big enough to keep the upper hand. For a 5 year-old this is complex and rewarding. My favourite so far. - whiskynotes.be

Aged in a mix of oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons. The nose is dusty and dark with baking cocoa and fresh brewed coffee. A lift of citrus – blood orange and eventually sticky marmalade – arrives with time in the glass, but it never gets much beyond those dark roasted notes, all of which are accentuated by smoldering smoke and mild incense. The palate starts out lush with dark berries and treacle but dries out a little on the midpalate with notes of char and walnut skins before settling into a warm balance on a generous finish of fig jam, silky milk chocolate, and candied orange peel. - drinkhacker.com

    Marionette Amaretto Liqueur (500ml)
    AUSTRALIA
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 25%

Almonds from the Keen family's lush biodynamic orchards on the Murray, macerated with a lick of golden syrup and a dash of salt are at the heart of Marionette's Amaretto. A marzipan character from Goulburn Valley apricot kernels, held over from Marionette Apricot Brandy and Muscat from Australia's fortified-wine heartland of Rutherglen round out this cocktail staple. Unflocked and only lightly filtered, creating a hazy liqueur packed full of natural flavour, this Amaretto is rich and nutty with a touch of marzipan, bolstered by varietal raisin notes from the Muscat. Enjoy it in a Mai Tai, Godfather, or Amaretto Sour, or try using it as a substitute for orgeat in cocktails. 25% Alc./Vol.

A noteworthy price for a peater with this kind of age statement. It's another batch from what some have nicknamed "the ampersand clan" (aka Atom Brands). As a senior member of the Seaweed & Aeons family, this heavily peated Highlander spent 18 years maturing with a portion of the whisky believed to have come out of sherry casks. If Ardmore is your style, this should tick all the right boxes. 40% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A secret single malt from the Highlands, though it does feel a touch peculiar presenting this sort of thing at 40% vol. Ex-Seagram/Pernod Ricard stock, perhaps? Ardmore, maybe? Colour: light gold. Nose: well yes, it’s charming, fresh yet peaty, with notes of bacon, lemon zest, engine oil and tar, and above all a good deal of toasted sesame oil. Mouth: it holds its own at 40%, smoky, bordering on sooty, yet indeed there’s not the faintest whiff of the sea, not even the shyest of periwinkles. Thoroughbred peated Highlands, in short. Finish: surprisingly long, with smoked tea and lemon... Comments: no, this is both lovely and delicious, it’s just that I can’t quite locate the ‘seaweed’ element, but no complaints otherwise. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Established by Captain Stentiford in 1893 the Laira Vineyards was purchased by Eric Brand and his wife Nancy in 1950. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s they sold their fruit to larger wineries before releasing the first Brand's Laira wine in 1966. Eric and his sons continued to produce wine at Brand’s Laira until 1994 when the McWilliam’s family purchased the property. Casella wines now own the vineyard.

Rich, beautifully fleshed and refined, this is a prime example of Coonawarra Cabernet.

Outstanding colour saturation featuring an impenetrable inky black core and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Streaming out of the glass are delightful blackcurrant, mulberry and vanillin cedar aromas which are complimented by some tobacco, subtle earthy black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant and mulberry fruits flow effortlessly across the mid weighted palate with subtle dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and spicy bay leaf accents lending further nuance. Seamless tannin integration concluding long and refined.

From a renown McLaren Vale winery, this is one of their flagship cuvees which is only released in top years. Sitting at an altitude of 200 metres the Blewitt Springs sub region normally ripens 1-2 weeks later than most other areas in McLaren Vale producing refined wines that have a silken feel and gorgeous layers of rich blue to black fruit.

Sleek and glossy textured this is a gorgeous marriage of opulence and finesse.

Midnight black heart with a dark purple black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are seductive aromas of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are complimented by spicy vanillin cedar, traces of dark chocolate, earth and peppered fennel notes. A rich, silky flow of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits caress the full bodied yet wonderfully refined and polished palate. Vanillin cedar, subtle earthy dark chocolate and peppered fennel accents line the back half. Outstanding in it’s power and depth, it possesses velvety tannins and a long glossy textured finish that marries opulence with finesse.

From three sandy sites, two planted in the '70s and one the late '90s; 14% whole bunch in the final blend; matured in French barrels (12% new) and a 2600L foudre. This is the most aromatic and lifted of the triad of single-site syrah in this range, which is unsurprising given the sandy soils. It doesn’t lack for depth and intensity though, the fruits simply more red, blurring a little into black, the structure tautly tensioned, the finale pleasingly brisk. Sour plum and cherry, tart blackberry, clove and pepper, struck rock, iron and black tea. It’s a lovely expression, just starting to suggest some tertiary perfume, which promises to build appealingly. It’s very good. Drink by 2035.

An impressive nose of blackberries, dried kelp, violets and licorice. The structure is a taut coil, like a spring contracting and expanding across gritty, detailed tannins melded to saline acidity. Iodine reduction, nicely handled. Full-weighted but detailed and classy. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. Screw cap.

St Bridget's Kirk Solera Batch #3 Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48.5%

This limited edition is created using Lady of the Glen's own method of blending malt whiskies. Drawing on different distilleries and styles, each batch is small, bespoke and distinct from the last; each blended, married and bottled from the company's custom built solera system made up of an ex-Fino sherry quarter cask and two ex-Oloroso quarter casks. Synonymous with the sherry and port industries, a solera involves multiple 'connected' barrels. As whisky is drawn from the last barrel the first barrel is topped up and the whiskies improve as they flow down the line. This is the 3rd batch under the St.Bridget's Kirk label and Hannah says they're now seeing real benefit from the process. In this example there's a rewarding balance of malt and sherry with any signs of youth now well into the background. Some tasters have found wisps of smoke. Instead we found the emphasis was on orange spice cake and cream tea biscuits. With an ice cube melting away, the emphasis shifts towards coffee cake and chocolate, also luxing up the mouthfeel. Very well integrated and much better than an everyday drinker. You'll find it hard to stop at one. 218 bottles. 48.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Taste: Oloroso-led arrival. Toffees and caramels. Treacle. Walnuts and winter spices. Black pepper – very peppery at first, though mellows over time. Medium to full-bodied. Velvety texture. Marmalade and honey. Oak – becomes more noticeably woody the longer it sits on the palate. Smoky finish lingers. Water reduces the intensity of the pepper and makes for a more rounded dram. It also seemed to unleash more of the smoke – with an earthier, more pungent peaty note coming through. Thought: Satisfying and fully flavoured. Not overly smoky but neither does the sherry completely dominate, although it certainly leads the way. With time and water the balance seemed to improve and make for a more interesting dram, at least for me – those who like that big sherry hit might prefer it without water. Tasting it on a crisp, Autumn day was a winner – the dram itself seems very Autumnal – like fallen leaves, distant coal fires and sultana cake. - ascotonscotch.com

Notes from the bottlers... Old leather, orange peel, cola cubes, toasted marshmallow and smoked kippers.

2013 Dalgety Glen Spey Small Batch 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.2%

Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favorable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, the particularity of the distillery style resides in its production method. As with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit.

For this bottling, Gregor Hannah has selected a pair ex-port casks. One of the casks is a refill ex-ruby cask but the other is barrique which has been seasoned with a premium ’Super Porto’ wine from the Douro River Valley. Married for a suitable time, these casks balance out the distillate's fruit and spice notes with the secondary maturaiton leaving notes of red berry compote, spiced biscuits, cloves, cinnamon, Turkish delight and black forrest gateau. 681 bottles produced. 50.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2011 Dalgety Glen Moray Small Batch 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $134. 99
    Bottle
    $1619.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52.5%

Another fruit salad Glen Moray, in the best possible way, no doubt partly due to the the fact that refill hogsheads have been used. These were combined and married in a butt for a couple of months before bottling. Hannah considers Glen Moray one of the most underrated whiskeys on the market, an opinion backed up by this simply delicious malt. Textural and mouth watering with fruit confectionary and vanilla flavours that are borderline lush, fine tannins and acids relieve what could have fallen flat in the wrong cask type. Nicely done. 683 bottles at 52.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A range from Hannah Whisky Merchants. A simple refill hogshead such as this one should be perfect. Colour: white wine. Nose: one is reminded of icing sugar, lime zest, broken tree branches, cactus, green apple... All of this, we like. With water: damp chalk and raw wool stand out, along with a bit of porridge, grist, damp peat with also a hint of eucalyptus... Nothing to fault, it's really perfect, of great purity. Mouth (neat): very citrusy and on green apple, extremely lively, with a bit of green pepper and a hint of fruit candy, like lemon and grapefruit. Perfect tension, very refreshing. With water: and there you have it, the texture thickens, there's limoncello, pink pepper, crème de menthe, anise, and a tiny touch of chilli. Finish: long, fresh, lemony, and minty. Comments: when people speak of desert island drams they mention old Lagavulins or Laphroaigs from the 1960s. In reality, it's this kind of Glen Moray that would be more appropriate. But in a double-magnum. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Director Gregor Hannah and Brand Ambassador Paul Mckendrick carefully hand select casks from their extensive portfolio to create this unique and harmonious small batch single malt whisky. A classic example, fully matured in a pair of refill hogsheads for 12 years allowing the soft and gentle, vanilla and honeyed nature of this make to shine through. Tasting revealed - pecan, honey, caramel wafer, white grape, black pepper and walnut.

This is a wine that shows what can be achieved in the Languedoc. It's a generous wine chock full of rich, concentrated ripe black fruits complemented with a sprinkle of dried herbs and a little pepper. It's rich and has a juicy succulence which makes the palate so appealing with a combination of ripe plummy fruits, a little dark chocolate, and an edge of licorice. Fine tannins provide the core to support the fruit as it drives through to a sustained finish. An impressive wine offering great value for this quality.

A less fruity style of Glenlossie which could be put down to the three year Oloroso spell that has added a dried peel tang. Otherwise, concentrated, nippy and a little tannic. Attractive touches of dry triple sec lift the finish, the aftertaste flattening with caramel and milk chocolate in tow. 261 bottles at 58.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... A light bodied distillate and a fairly modern style of Speyside whisky where the vast majority of output is destined for blends, we rescued this cask from mediocrity. More than 3 year finish in our famous oloroso cask sourced from Hidalgo cooperage in Spain has offered the spirit a softer side of ex-sherry with more of a toffee and caramel character rather than the expected Christmas cake and dried fruit notes. The Madeira finish has had an influence on the nose, though not enough to eclipse the bright fruit character of the distillate. Intense biscuity malt climaxes with a zing, while a nectarine and feijoa-like fruitiness rises through the later stages - strikingly similar to the rebound on some hors d'Age cognacs. A fascinating, odd-ball malt in a league of its own. 200 bottles at 55.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Madeira Finish. A light bodied distillate produced at high strength in Loch Lomond's straight neck pot stills. Aged in a hogshead and finished in a first fill ex-Madeira cask for layers of caramel, walnut and citrus. This distillery is famous for its ability to consistently produce many different styles of spirit including grain spirit too. Inchmurrin is one of their lighter styles distilled in straight neck still with a higher cut point producing a light fruity style. This combined with well over a year finish in a Madeira cask has produced a lovely toffee and caramel character. Tasting revealed - banoffee, tinned peaches and cake mix.
