2020 Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva Barbaresco
The Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.
Other Reviews...
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is quite powerful and ample but not fully integrated as of yet. This vineyard site is located in a warm growing area, and you do feel the heat of the vintage in terms of the ripeness of the bouquet and the softness of the tannins. This wine paints with broad brush strokes, offering blackberry, plum and spice. It needs another year or two to find better focus. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota comes across as somewhat austere today, which is pretty atypical. Floral, mint and white pepper lend notable aromatic brilliance. Deceptively medium in body, the 2020 offers plenty of drive. Floral, savory and mineral notes extend the intense, saline finish. I am curious to taste this again with more time in bottle. Drink 2025-2035.

Coming from a southeast-facing exposure with a cooler climate, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is a bit lighter by comparison and has more lift aromatically as well, with notes of rosemary, mint, redcurrants, and dried earth. It has a more linear feel and captures a wonderful, refreshing energy, with finer but defined tannins and ripe citrus and apricot on the long finish. I think this is going to be one to watch and could potentially exceed the rest of the wines in the range thus far. Drink 2027-2057.
