    "For a ten-year-old, let's say it's pretty impressive." - whiskyfun.com

'Flotilla' is matured next to the sea in hand-selected first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. The profile promises vanilla sweetness with hints of zesty lemon and green apples, rounded off with a distinct maritime note, typical of Pulteney. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Totally ex-American oak. I found it so good and so balanced, after some previous versions more on sawdust and vanillin, that I placed it among my 'best of show' during the 'masterclass' we did with Dave B. at Whisky Live Paris this year. We always have a good laugh when doing these things with Mr. Broom. Colour: pale white wine. Top. Nose: we are really by the sea, it's not just some vague advertising pitch thrown on labels by marketeers from Wick or London. Sea spray and seaweed thus blend with a very subtle vanilla, which combines perfectly with wet chalk, baker's yeast, unleavened bread, and white beer brewed in town by the last local hipsters. A few notes of smoked fish, followed by some vanilla fudge. Mouth: very fragrant, powerful, smoky, spicy, salty, citrusy... I think that if we start to find more of such Pulteney, we can soon organise a large comparative session between them and Clynelish. It's good to have goals in life. I also really like these notes of dill, watercress, and sorrel in the background, on top of the lemon. Finish: rather long, still slightly fatty but otherwise perfectly centred on oysters and lemon. Some fresh spices in the aftertaste, as well as a few little Easter eggs in sugar. Not very sure about our timing here, ha. Comments: not much to add. For a ten-year-old, let's say it's pretty impressive. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Tomintoul Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Master Distiller, Robert Fleming, created this small batch bottling by specially selecting Tomintoul aged in ex-bourbon barrels which are then married & finished in hand-selected Pedro Ximénez sherry butts from Andalucía, Spain. In contrast to Tomintoul's lighter style, the ‘finishing’ creates a richer & more full-flavoured expression. Awarded a Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2024. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Aromas of sweet treacle and dried figs mingled with malt loaf, raisins and baking spices. Palate: Layers of fruit cake and banana bread followed by marzipan stuffed dates, toasted walnuts and sultanas with hints of clove and cinnamon. Finish: Cosy notes of Danish pastries, cocoa powder and syrup sponge cake fading to a warming oak and tobacco linger.

Founded in 1997 by Phil Sexton, Giant Steps has become one of Australia’s most celebrated cool-climate producers. With a focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the wines are crafted to reflect their individual vineyard sites, from Tarrawarra to Gladysdale. Today, under the guidance of Head of Winemaking Melanie Chester, Giant Steps continues its legacy of expressive, site-driven wines defined by purity, finesse, and a profound sense of place.

Planted in 1997 on the steep north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges in Gruyere, Sexton Vineyard sits between 130 - 210m elevation. The shallow gravelly loam over a rocky clay base naturally limits yields, producing concentrated fruit from predominantly Gingin and Mendoza clones. Fruit was 100% handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, with juice transferred by gravity to 500L French oak puncheons. Fermentation occurred with wild yeasts on full lees, followed by a small amount of bâtonnage and 10% malolactic fermentation. The wine matured for nine months in French oak, 15% new and 85% seasoned.
    Alc. 13.2%

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay leads with dried mint and white peach, lemon zest and brine. In the mouth, the wine is tightly coiled and almost austere; certainly, the acidity is like a whip in the mouth, lashing the fruit and trailing out over the finish. It's a mouthwatering wine, salty too. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

The 2024 Chardonnay Sexton is more pithy and open-knit. It delivers generous nectarine and musky peach skin aromas, with subtle flint and nougat-scented French oak. This is a flavorsome style, more expansive, expressive and fleshy than the other single vineyard wines from 2024, which is to its advantage, before softening on the finish. Drink 2026 - 2032.

A blend of Gingin and Bernard clones planted in '97 between 100 and 200m in Gruyere. 20% new oak and 10% mlf. Another salivating and seductive Sexton Chardonnay with its bouquet of stone fruits, preserved lemons, freshly ground coffee beans and roasted hazelnut. The beautifully balanced and tightly coiled palate is underpinned by its concentration and intensity. Finishes saline and extremely long. It's all here and needs another five to seven years, at least, to reach its zenith. Drink 2025 - 2033.

Smallest volume make in some time. Finer than the Tarraford.
Gentle reduction, stonefruit, brine, ginger, river-stones and a dry, almost salty feel on the finish. Gentle infusion of mango skin and citrus but juicy and fine throughout. There’s so much finesse to this release. There’s fantastic intensity to the fruit too; just when you think it’s finished it keeps on throwing punches. The small make has added, it would seem, to both the power and to the length here. This is a sensational Sexton chardonnay. Drink 2026 - 2032+

Today, under the guidance of Head of Winemaking Melanie Chester, Giant Steps continues its legacy of expressive, site-driven wines defined by purity, finesse, and a profound sense of place.

Planted in 1988, Tarraford Vineyard lies in a protected valley at 100m elevation with grey clay loam soils and a mix of north, south, and east-facing slopes. Despite its warmer subregion, Chardonnay is planted on the cooler aspects, with P58, 548, and 96 clones contributing to the blend. Fruit was 100% handpicked and whole-bunch pressed, with juice transferred by gravity to 500L French oak puncheons on full lees. Fermentation was wild, with 37% malolactic conversion, followed by nine months’ maturation in French oak (10% new, 90% seasoned).

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay is creamy and concentrated, with a flow of crushed nuts and notes of custard apple, scraped vanilla pod, freshly grated nutmeg and warm pastry. This is a rounded, powerful wine with less complexity and edge than the 2023 tasted alongside, and it has more bulbous fruit weight and shape. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2024 Chardonnay Tarraford is right in the slot, delivering a powerful yet balanced blend of musky peach and melon aromas, well backed by vanillin oak, buttery nuts and praline barrel ferments. This is full throttle in style for the Yarra, with expansive flavors and underlying strength, while retaining freshness on the finish. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Planted on a cool, south-facing slope in Tarrawarra. Barrel fermented and matured in puncheons and barriques (27% new). A bright green gold. Seductive with its bouquet of fuzzy peach skins, apricot, lemon oil and a hint of fresh vanilla bean. Opulent and creamily textured, with a fine vein of acidity running through the wine that gives it both structure and length. Very long and very yum to drink now and in the short to medium term. Drink 2025 - 2030.

Tarraford is the lowest and theoretically the warmest of Giant Steps single vineyard site. This vineyard is, to quote winemaker Mel Chester, “tucked into a glade in Tarrawarra”.
Straight out of the gate this looked really beautiful. “We’re leaning into the breadth of 2024 with this wine, and into the personality of the vineyard”. Almond, pears, peaches, citrus, flowers and spice but it’s the juicy flow of it, so well seasoned. Umumi savouriness on the finish. Chester used the word opulent and that’s the word. I would jump this now; it wants to roll right now. When I came back to this maybe 45 minutes later all it had done was continue to blossom and pillow. Gorgeous wine. Drink 2025 - 2032+

Planted in 1997 by Ray Guerin, Applejack Vineyard sits on steep east-facing slopes at 300m in Gladysdale, with grey clay loam over a basalt volcanic base. The cooler upper Yarra climate provides a long growing season, well suited to Pinot Noir. Fruit was hand-picked and fermented in a mix of small oak fermenters and stainless-steel vats, with Pommard parcels whole-bunch fermented and other clones destemmed. The final blend includes 30% whole bunch. Maturation took place over ten months in French oak barriques (20% new, 80% seasoned), before blending and bottling by gravity without fining or filtration.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir leads with its whole-bunch characters: scraped orange skin, chinotto, bitter clove, dark chocolate and star anise. In the mouth, the whole bunches serve to dry out the wine and compound the tannins, but what it does there, it balances by also contributing spice and capaciousness. In the end, this component pales in comparison to the flow of seamless fruit, which makes a significant impact. This is a powerful, lingering wine of great length and complexity. Time will smooth out the bunching tannins through the finish no doubt. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

From the Applejack vineyard, planted on grey clay soils at 300m in Gladysdale in '97 by Ray Guerin. 40% whole bunches and 40% less wine in '24. Darkly fruited and more intense than the '23 with aromas of wild blackberry, raspberry, briar, and just a hint of sous bois. On the palate, this is as concentrated and mouth-filling as the bouquet suggests it will be, culminating with succulent, grippy tannins on the long, tapering finish. It's a touch more 'sauvage' and a little less floral than normal but, even in this warmer vintage, one of Australia's most celebrated pinot noirs is in impressive form. Drink 2025 - 2032.

The Applejack Vineyard at Gladysdale in the Yarra Valley is on an east facing slope. There’s a 100 metre drop from the top of the vineyard to the bottom. There’s also significant clonal diversity in this vineyard. It was planted in 1997. The Bastard Hill and Primavera vineyards are red dirt; we’re into caramel-clay soils here at Gladysdale.
When I was a kid in suburban Melbourne various neighbours along my street would, in autumn, sweep up the fallen leaves into brown piles and then burn them, in the gutter, in the street. I’d walk to school and pass intermittent piles of smouldering smoke, which was cinematic, atmospheric, and mind-boggling simultaneously. I mention this here because this release of Applejack Pinot Noir is so inherently autumnal. I picked up the glass, took one sniff and sip, and thought: hello. The smoked herbs, the leaves, the walk through a misty-smoky field of red cherry and plum. The palate puts its foot down, upping the presence, and then fanning out through the finish. It’s a wine of extreme length but it’s the feels, the fleshes and the nuances that motor the enchantment. Drink 2026 - 2034+.

Planted in 2001 by Lou Primavera, this 12-hectare vineyard in Woori Yallock sits at 240m on north- and north-east-facing slopes of red clay loam. Fruit has been sourced from here since 2006, with MV6 on the north slope and 115 and G-clone on the south. Handpicked in two parcels, fruit was fully destemmed and fermented separately by clone in small seasoned French oak vats. After 10-14 days on skins and completion of malolactic fermentation, parcels matured for ten months in French oak barriques (20% new, 80% seasoned). Bottled by gravity without fining or filtration.

The 2024 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir is floral and fine, with a profusion of dried herbs and red fruit. The wine is sedate in its way, gentle and weighted to the back palate with exceptional flow and seamlessness. I like this so much. It has less raw, brute force than the Applejack (a very impressive wine), but it feels no less impactful or long. "Placid," comes to mind. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

From Lou Primavera's '01-planted vineyard at 300m on red volcanic soils in Woori Yallock. 35% whole bunches. A bright crimson red. This always highly seductive and perfumed wine has aromas of raspberries, orange peel and cranberries as well as a little musk stick and rose bush. There's a gentle succulence on the palate that's nicely balanced by the wine's supple tannins and fine-boned acidity. Long, lovely, now and over the next six to eight years. Drink 2025 - 2032.

The Primavera Vineyard sits at 300 metres above sea level.
Oak is more present in this wine. Mahogany, red fruits, lots of herb and flowers, pomegranate and roasted nuts, quite grippy, whole bunch notes evident but tucked in, classic red fruits, rinds, musks and florals but with whispers of mescal. This felt slightly blocky and oaky at first but it came together in the glass and as it did, the wine’s deliciousness went through the roof. The aftertaste has that animal fat, smoky, bacon-like aspect. This is the sleeper in the range; it could be up with the best of them in time. Drink 2026 - 2032+.

Planted in 1997 on the steep north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges in Gruyere, the Sexton Vineyard spans 30 hectares at 130 - 210m elevation. Soils are thin grey clay loam over granite and ironstone, with low yields naturally set by the shallow gravelly loams and tough rocky clay base. Pinot Noir is predominantly G5V15 and MV6 clones, well suited to the warmer conditions and sunlight exposure of this site. Handpicked fruit was fermented in a mix of small oak fermenters and stainless-steel open vats. The 2024 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir is incredibly perfumed, with apples and rose petals, cherry and blood plum. In the mouth, the tannins are quite grippy and firm—still eminently fine but with rigidity. From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere planted in the late '90s. 100% destemmed. A deep crimson ruby. Aromas of ripe dark raspberries, blackcurrant pastilles (these were always my favourite) and even a little kirsch. A touch of rose bush. The palate is juicy and fleshy and the wine's ripe, plush tannins make this, along with the Primavera, the richest, meatiest and most immediate of the four single-vineyard pinots in '24. Having said this, you'd be happy if you found some laying around the cellar in eight or so years. Drink 2025 - 2030.

Red fruit, aspects of saucy oak, figs and graphite, smoke. Chester described this wine as “grenache adjacent” and that’s as apt a call as you’ll hear. It has that cloves-tucked-into-raspberry-into-smoke-into-iron persona. It feels compact, it tastes delicious, and it has good weight and length, the latter featuring a keen smoked peppercorn aspect. ECK Wines is the work of Emily C. Kinsman, a former Collins Street lawyer who traded city life for winemaking in Central Victoria. Since her first vintage in 2019, Emily has grown organically farmed Shiraz on the northern banks of Lake Eppalock while also producing négociant wines under her ECK label. In 2024, she expanded to a remarkable 5-acre Macedon Ranges vineyard, planted in 1987 to Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer at 800m altitude. Her wines reflect both place and passion—crafted with love, hope, and no small measure of hard work.

The 2023 Doug’s Pinot Noir is a rare expression of Macedon Ranges fruit, sourced from Doug’s vineyard in the cool sub-region of Romsey. Planted in the 2000s at 530m on a north-facing basalt slope, the site is home to a mix of MV6, 114, and 115 clones, producing fruit of purity and finesse.
Hand-picked on April 26, the grapes were vinified with a mix of techniques—whole bunch and whole berry ferments in amphora, alongside de-stemmed fruit fermented in open vats with daily plunging. After pressing, the wine matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak barriques and amphora, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered in December 2024.

Bannockburn Vineyards was founded in 1974 by Stuart Hooper, who envisioned producing Australian wines to rival the world’s best. Situated in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong, the estate spans 26 vineyard blocks across diverse soils of volcanic debris, ancient seabeds, and limestone. Now among the oldest plantings in the region, Bannockburn is celebrated for its close-planted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varieties, grown with organic principles and crafted with minimal intervention to reflect purity of site. Remaining family-owned, the estate continues to balance heritage, sustainability, and innovation, producing wines of depth, character, and enduring quality.

The 2024 Grigsby Chardonnay comes from Bannockburn’s close-planted, certified organic block, established in 2007 and named in honour of long-serving viticulturist Lucas Grigsby. Grafted to Bernard 76 in 2019, the 0.87-acre site is densely planted (8,333 vines/ha) on dark clay over weathered basalt and limestone, producing fruit of concentration and precision. Hand-picked parcels were whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak hogsheads, around 25% new. Natural malolactic fermentation followed, with the wine resting on lees, unstirred, for 10 months before blending and bottling.

From a 0.4ha close-planted vineyard. Barrel fermented and matured in 25% new hogsheads and with 100% mlf. A light, bright green gold. In contrast to the slightly richer and more open Winery Block chardonnay, this is more restrained with its aromas of pink grapefruit, just-ripened stone fruits, oyster shells and almond. The palate is equally restrained and there's a touch of orange pith on the gently spicy, long finale. Will be even better when it opens up over the next two to three years. Tops. Drink 2025-2032.

Grigsby Chardonnay is grown on the estate’s close-planted (8333 vines per hectare), certified organic vineyard. It’s named after Lucas Grimsby, who has worked in the vineyards at Bannockburn since 1987.
Quite a lot of colour to this wine and powerful fruit up-front, though the finish is then as restrained as it is long. This is a honed wine if ever there was one. Nougat, grilled peach, steel, mineral, orange rind and lemongrass characters put on a powerful display, lemon blossom notes then rising through the finish. Despite its colour this is a wine with yet plenty up its sleeve. The length of the finish here though puts a significant positive emphasis on the quality on offer. Drink 2027 - 2031+

There's 30% whole bunches in the mix here and it comes across as a more complex, textural wine than the 'house' pinot noir. Some darker cherry in the mix, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, too, with an understory of spice, amaro herbs, dried citrus rind, gamey tones and a dose of earthiness. It's got a lovely minerally palate presence, tannins powdery and compact, the tail long, slender and lingering with spice, stone and red fruits. Drink by 2036.

Rich and voluptuous with lush black fruits saturating the flamboyant, weighty palate.

Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques of which 40% were new. Very deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Heady black raspberry, liquorice, black cherry and blood plum scents engulf the nostrils. Also evident are vanillin spice, provincial herb and subtle scorched earth notes. Rich, voluptuous black raspberry, liquorice and blood plum fruits saturate flamboyant, weighty palate with some ripe black cherry, vanillin earth and spicy fennel elements sitting in the background. My good mate used to live in the house next to the Slade vineyard. I've wandered these vines quite a few times with a Cooper's Pale in my hand; the vines are epic, gnarly old beasts, some of the best. Pure satsuma plum fruits daubed with souk-like spice along with hints of gingerbread, pomegranate, cola, char siu, biltong, dried citrus rind, some amaro herbs and an expression of blood orange. It's no airy, fragrant style. There's resonance and power here, abundant spice, bright acidity and a solid core of plum and ginger that rolls along nicely. Drink by 2040.

Fresh and juicy finishing long, dry and slippery textured.

Drawing on Tahbilk estate plantings of Grenache and Mourvèdre the fruit for this moreish Rose is picked early to retain freshness and delicacy, with the grapes crushed and pressed with as little oxygen contact as possible to preserve the fresh fruit characters. A technique favoured in Provence is then used to increase texture and mouthfeel, by mixing the cold juice (including the pulp and solids) with nitrogen gas briefly each day over four days. The wine is then racked to produce clear juice and fermented with a specific Rosé yeast.
Produced from a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. Vibrant damask pink tinged colour. Leaping out of the glass are aromas of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate followed by some musk and light spice notes. Fresh and juicy, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate fruits fill the mouth. Lively acidity lends an energetic feel with notions of musk and spice extending through the long, dry, slippery textured finish.

Not your usual strawberries-and-cream rosé experience, although strawberries together with dark cherries and raspberries do figure here. No, this brings a little bit extra to the glass in bramble and hints of wild herbs together with peppery spice, musk and a touch of earthy savouriness. It's a strong combo, delivered briskly with lingering red cherry and stone-dry freshness. Drink by 2028.

Other reviews... An unusual vintage bottling of Old Pulteney, in that maturation occurred in a mix of American bourbon casks and Spanish sherry casks that previously held heavily-peated whisky. The nose opens with a whiff of ozone; then lemon, vanilla, and coconut appear, along with fleeting wood smoke. Intense tropical fruitiness merges with milk chocolate, lemon sorbet, and lively spices on the palate. Spicy milk chocolate with a citric and softly peaty tang in the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...On the nose: funky! Now that’s interesting. Some fantastic dried fruits – cranberries, sultanas, quite sharp too. Also a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon kind of note, with black fruits, tobacco and black tea. Strawberry jam. Heather honey. Cherries now. Golden syrup sponge cake. In the mouth: Bonkers, but I love it: the smokiness is just a suggestion, the warmth from a cigar; nutmeg, oranges, heather honey, cranberries, blackcurrants. That is outrageous fun. Nicely oily too, and the dried fruits become just a fraction more cloying towards the herbal, honeyed finish. - malt-review.com

The Rosebank distillery is settled on the banks of the Forth-Clyde canal near Falkirk and has been mothballed since 1993. Considered as the Queen of all Lowland malts by some specialists, the final Rosebank release was a cask strength bottling in the 'Rare Malts' collection, and independent bottlers have put several versions on the market.

This particular bottling was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2008 at 46% by Hart Brothers. The distillery in Falkirk closed its doors in 1993, making this bottle a rare opportunity to taste this sought-after whisky alongside a new release. After being purchased by Ian Mcleod Distillers in 2023, the site opened up to the public in June 2024 and has started production again. A new Rosebank release is still a while away, but the older bottles will be getting snatched up quickly. Don't miss out!

The Sommet Shiraz block is a small 0.6ha block, consisting of 35 rows, and 5000 vines. This close planted block was configured with 1.6m row spacings and 0.75m between each vine. This block was planted at the most elevated point of our vineyard, on a steep south/west facing slope below the ridgeline of the Mount Camel range, on deep Cambrian era decomposed greenstone rock formed over 500 million years. Fermented in small open fermenters with 10% fermented as whole bunches. 18 days on skins. Pressed to 1-2 year old 600L demi-muids and barriques. The wine remained in barrel for 8 months prior to bottling.
This wine is a powerhouse and a superb combination of excellent fruit and expert winemaking. Aromas abound from the glass, sitting almost squarely between the primary and tertiary realms – mulberry, blackberry, wild strawberry, dried red and black fruits, earth, graphite – and just a touch of cedary wood from the relatively short time in oak. On the palate, you’ll be met with plush flavours and a sumptuous, teeth-gripping mouthfeel from the finely integrated tannins, with a length that lingers. “Sommet” is French for “summit”, and this wine is the pinnacle of the Tellurian range, worth every penny and with the potential to deliver the goods for many years to come still. If you’ve ever wondered why Heathcote is so revered for its Shiraz, drinking this wine will well and truly answer that question.

A moreish Pinot Grigio that shows wonderful intensity and textural shape across the mouth watering palate.

In Alto Adige Pinot Grigio ranks as one of the most important varieties and altitude is king. Erste + Neue’s Pinot Grigio comes from some of their highest sites ranging in altitudes up to 800 metres that have an array of different soil types. Picked in late September to retain acidity and freshness, post fermentation the pressed juice spends about 6 months in 110-hectolitre neutral oak and is left on gross less to provide additional texture and palate weight.

Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. Their labels Romulus and Remus come from the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin Remus in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus (Barossa Valley) as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus (Eden Valley) was more refined, focused and elegant.
Fruit was sourced from the Nuriootpa, Light Pass and Moppa sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged 80 plus years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 45% were new for a period of 18 months.

Dense, concentrated and velvety, this is top line Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.

Magnificent inky black core with a very deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with great potency are seductive aromas of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice which marry into some vanillin oak, mocha, subtle earthy fennel and spice notes. Rich, powerful and opulently layered, lavish blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruits saturate every corner of the weighty palate. Rich black fruits with an opulent yet chewy feel concluding long and juicy within a robust frame.

Valerie Chaume started Chaume-Arnaud when she was just 23 years old, renting 4.5 hectares of vineyards from her family. With her husband Philippe joining her in 1989, they expanded the cellar. Situated in the northern part of Cotes du Rhone villages, Vinsobres is one of the most northerly Crus in the Southern Rhone and sits at a high altitude of 400 to 450 meters, higher even than the highest vineyard in Gigondas.
The 2020 Vinsobres is made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Mourvèdre. The fruit is mainly sourced from the high plateau and south-facing stony, limestone clay soil. Hand-picked fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented using only natural yeasts, with gentle elevage for three weeks after which it is matured in concrete tanks.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Black raspberry and liquorice aromas rise from the glass followed by some black cherry, scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat notes. Since its stylistic shift in 2019, the Elsa has become Moss Wood’s canvas for exploring the more complex and imaginative side of Sauvignon Blanc. The 2020 release continues this trajectory, blended with 10% Semillon for added aromatic nuance and palate depth, and vinified with the same intricate techniques usually reserved for the Sauvignon Blanc component.
The fruit was sorted, pressed, and allowed a gentle natural settle before a cool ferment with multiple yeast strains commenced. Rather than seeking absolute clarity, the juice retained a light haze, bringing subtle caramel notes and textural weight. Fermentation progressed partly in French oak barriques (6% new), building body and finesse without overt oak expression. Secondary fermentation was carefully nurtured to completion, followed by nine months of maturation on lees before blending and bottling in January 2021.

A 90/10% blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon, barrel fermented and matured for 9 months in French barriques (6% new). The tiny percentage of new oak must have been accompanied by 1yo oak for all or most of the time it spent in barrel. The move away from clear juice to slightly cloudy (in 2019) has moved this into big boy's territory, full-bodied if you will, but none the worse for that. Drink 2022-2027.

Some of my compatriots in the wine writing game are not the biggest fans of full worked Sauvignon Blanc, but I am not one of them. Actually I think these wines can be some of the best white wines in the world when done right, as can be seen in the best white wines from Bordeaux. The Ribbon Vale Elsa is a relatively new addition to the Moss Wood range – actually this is only the second vintage. The 2020 is mid straw in colour with golden tints. The integration of fruit with oak is good with the pineapple and green herb notes seamlessly sliding together with vanillin oak and a little crushed cashew barrel ferment. There is already good complexity on show which bodes well for bottle aging. There is then a delicious brightness and freshness to the palate, with oak again sitting in the background before a finish of moderate length. Enjoy with lobster topped with a herb butter for optimal drinking pleasure. Drink 2021-2027.

The Estate consists of 33 hectares of vines planted on the prized Coonawarra Terra Rosa soils. Established in 1972, the first vintage in 1975 was greeted with considerable enthusiasm.
Dense inky black in colour with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Elevated blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice aromas are joined by some dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar and earthy mocha notes. Gloriously decadent, voluptuously textured and explosive, this is pure seduction in a glass.

Produced from a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier, Torbreck’s Run Rig is modelled on the Northern Rhone appellation of Cote Rotie’s wines. Fruit was sourced from the Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Moppa, Ebenezer, Light Pass and Greenock districts of Barossa Valley with maturation taking place in a combination of new (50%) and older French barriques for a period of 30 months.
Spectacular colour featuring an ultra dense, inky black heart along with an equally deep black dark red hue. Intoxicating the olfactory senses are soaring aromatics of dark to black plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and vanillin oak. Earthy mocha, fennel and spice notes ensue. Extravagantly rich and voluptuous, the luxurious palate is overwhelmed by a tidal wave of dark to black plum, liquorice, blackberry liqueur and dark chocolate fruits. Mocha, subtle apricot, vanillin oak, scorched earth and spicy pepper elements sit in the background. Possessing explosive power and out of this world concentration, it has velvety tannins and a plush, skyscraper finish that seemingly never ends.

The 2022 RunRig had 2% Viognier added to the Syrah after barrel maturation, from the current vintage. I've clarified this with winemaker Ian Hongell, because my incorrect memory ran toward skins only. Glad I asked. Aromatically, the wine is so fresh and detailed; it hints at latent power and intense concentration, but it doesn't overbear on this point. On the palate, the wine has everything we could hope for—intense, balanced red fruit, a splay of ductile tannins and such a light fluffiness to the profile that I find it most appealing indeed. The discussion here today is regarding the comparison to the great 2021 vintage. It was a freak, out-of-the-box year that blessed producers with a spot-free growing season, good yields and excellent quality fruit. The wines, for the most part, will endure through the decades with grace and ease. The 2022s are tighter, fluffier, more fruit forward and, in my opinion, slightly more delicious, but over the long term, backing the 2021s to go the distance seems the blue-chip option. We can discuss this again in 20 years (2045) when that answer will have become more clear. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast." I love this wine today. It's a superstar. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2042.

I guess you could call the RunRig a modern Barossa classic. 98/2% shiraz/viognier, it's an epic wine, a solid plinth of black and blues fruits deeply etched with exotic spice and earth. Hints of clove, star anise, Old Gold chocolate, licorice, pan juices, earth, dried meats, rose petals, black tea and graphite. Unctuous with great length of flavour and fine, silty tannins suffusing through the wine, it's a study in power and purity, light and shade and all that is great about ancient Barossa shiraz vines. Another great RunRig release. Drink by 2045.

Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Oloroso Barrel Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

An antique Spanish Oloroso barrel has been used for full maturation here. The dry, oxidatively aged sherry results in a darker, richer, and nuttier wine compared to other sherries, bestowing some of that goodness to the final whisky. 50% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... It's textured and mouth-coating with bold notes of dried fruits, plum jam, and sweet cherries in syrup. Mid-palate reveals deeper tones of bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso, and walnuts, all wrapped in velvety tannins from the oak. There’s a refined dryness that keeps the richness in balance, evoking old sherry bodegas and seasoned wood that’s smoother than a jazz sax solo.

Part of Dingle's "Celtic Wheel of the Year" series. This one celebrates the spring equinox, known as "Cónocht an Earraigh" in Irish, and was aged in first-fill bourbon casks with a Cabernet Sauvignon finish. A lightish nose of vanilla, sweet beer and dried grass preludes an oily entry and a malty mid-palate, gingery heat and oaky grip kicking in early. Rebounds with more of the requisite sugars, while hinting at semi-ripe red berries; finally balanced, but the length is cut short. Triple distilled. 50.5% Alc./vol.

Other reviews... A very drinkable Dingle, quite laid-back. Getting a wine barrel finish really good is not that easy, and often - in my opinion - maturing in such a barrel does not necessarily give it more depth, but on the contrary ensures that the whiskey becomes lighter and more floating. Fortunately, this is not the case here; at most, it could be that the fruity notes are more emphasized in the nose than usual. - whiskybase.com

Notes from the producers... Anticipate aromas of ripe plums, blackberries, toasted almonds, and muscovado sugar, with flavours of rich red fruits, subtle spice, gingerbread and toffee.

Matured in first-fill Bourbon casks followed by an extended finish in Tawny Port casks, this, the fifth release in the 'Celtic Wheel of the Year' series honours the ancient celebration of Grianstad an Gheimhridh, the winter solstice. Grianstad translates to ‘the stopping of the sun’ and the port finishing ties in with the label's theme, evoking the dark of night drawing in. Light, vaguely defined aromatics suggest dried grass, bread and faint beeswax, but compensate in a fuller, more oily and better defined mid palate presence; the creamy, biscuity malt fills out nicely, ending with hints of baked apple, cinnamon and white pepper. Appealing, even if complexity or persistence aren’t strong points. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Ice cream soda, blackcurrant jelly, banana carmel, pomegranate, cinnamon toast and warm ginger. Taste: Red berry fruits, dark chocolate, warm cloves, creamy soft fudge. Finish: The spice mellow leaving a lingering sweetness on the tip of the tongue.

    $1980.00 Dozen

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. 2023 Las Molinas is the second vintage of this single parcel wine from a centenarian plot of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines that had formerly been included in the Palo Blanco bottling. Fermented and aged in a single neutral oak foudre of 2500 liters.

    Other Reviews....
The second vintage of the 2023 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is quite similar to the regular Palo Blanco from the same year: saline, sharp and with great purity, precision and cleanliness. This matured in a Garbelotto 2,500-liter oak foudre. It has a moderate 11.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.01 and 7.48 grams of acidity. It's vibrant, full of energy and electricity, with effervescent freshness and volcanic minerality. This is very young but has the elements and the balance to age neatly in bottle. 2,500 bottles were filled in July 2024. Drink 2025-2035.

Forty percent of the 2023 Migan comes from concrete (the part bottled as Chingao) and the rest from wines aged in 228-liter barrels. The blend seems more polished and elegant than the Chingao, which felt rawer. It's still powerful and concentrated but has very good balance and elegance—one of the finest Migan to date. I also tasted it next to the bottled 2022, and this has a deeper color. It should age well in bottle. There will be some 7,000 bottles that they plan to bottle in November 2024. Drink 2025-2032.

Lousas is the name Envintate has given to their wines from Ribeira Sacra, translating to slate and a nod to the rock that marks these wines. Each of their Lousas releases are predominantly Mencia, along with a smaller component of various indigenous varieties such as Merenzao, Caino, Garnacha Tintorerra, and Palomino among many others.

Vina de Aldea is a blend of several plots from the Amandi, Quiroga, and Ribeiras do Sil subregions of Ribeira Sacra. Doad meanwhile hails from different terroirs throughout the Galician town of Doade, is Mencia dominant with the remaining 15% a field blend of various varieties. Rosende is sourced from a single vineyard from a village of the same name, and the soils here are similar to the Northern Rhone with granite crystals flecked through the sand. Finally the single vinyard pair of Seoane and Camino Novo perched on the edge of the River Sil, each featuring vines over 80 years old. While similarly located these two are very different in style, Seoane being the more lifted, elegant and immediately attractive, whereas Camino Novo is more brooding and often one of the most profound Mencia in the area.

    Other Reviews....
The bottled 2023 Lousas Viñas de Aldea is perfumed, intoxicating and showy, with a floral note of dried rose petals that I also found in the Misturado from this same vintage. It's a blend of grapes, 80% Mencía and the rest a field blend of reds and whites, Brancellao, Merenzao, Alicante, Grao Negro, Mouratón, Jerez, Godello, etc., and zones, Amandi, Quiroga and Ribeiras del Sil with lots of gneiss and also slate and granite, depending on the plot. The grapes were picked between the first and 23rd of September, a very long harvest because of the rain. It fermented with 70% to 100% full clusters in concrete or plastic bins, and 30% of the volume remained in concrete and the rest matured in used barrels of different sizes, from 225 to 500 liters, for 11 months with lees and without racking. There's also a flinty smokiness that gives the wine a different twist. It's stunning and incredibly priced. There were 31,150 bottles and 329 magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2024. Drink 2025-2032.

The 2023 Lousas Seoane has an intoxicating floral nose and seems to close in the glass. It's very young and tender, perfumed and primary. I think the field blend of red and white varieties brings nuance, perfume and detail (and possibly freshness too). It has pungent flavors and doesn't lack ripeness at 13.55% alcohol; this is the ripest of the single vineyards, a south/southwest-acing slope harvested the sixth of September. Like the rest of the single-vineyard wines, it was vinified with full clusters and indigenous yeasts, foot trodden in plastic bins, pressed with a vertical press and matured in neutral 228-, 400- and 500-liter barrels, including malolactic and without any added sulfur until bottling. This beauty is pure perfume. 1,960 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

Curly Flat, nestled in the Macedon Ranges at 540 metres altitude, is renowned for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from its 14.5-hectare vineyard. Established in 1989 and now solely owned by Jenifer Kolkka, the estate is committed to expressing its unique volcanic soils, cool climate and diverse clones through meticulous winemaking. With naturally high acidity and elegant structure, Curly Flat’s wines consistently showcase purity, precision and a strong sense of place.

The 2023 season in Macedon Ranges was marked by a cool start, with the coldest spring on record slowing vine growth before a warm, rain-boosted January gave vineyards renewed vigour. February’s dry conditions encouraged flavour concentration, while a cool April ensured harvest at ideal ripeness. The result was fruit of precision and freshness, with lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity, and finely etched structure. This Estate Pinot Noir reflects eleven separate vineyard parcels, each handled to highlight their unique clonal and soil characters. Indigenous yeast ferments, varying levels of whole bunch, and selective oak use combine to create a wine of depth and complexity. Fragrant red fruits, darker savoury notes, and vineyard-driven tannins are seamlessly integrated. After 16 months’ maturation in French oak (20% new), the final blend was bottled unfined and unfiltered, offering clarity and site expression.
    Alc. 12.5%

Curly Flat Pinot Noir can be a bit surly in its youth and this release is of that ilk. It’s not a flashy pinot noir, let’s say. It tastes of cherries red and black with stringy herb and stewed strawberry notes. It’s firm through the finish and for now, takes a lot of coaxing to relax and extend. There’s a meatiness to this release, not overt but there. It’s a solid release for now but in time could well push higher. Drink 2027 - 2034+.
