Bollinger's 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. "Balance was hard to achieve in 2015," Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. "At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness." Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There's real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.

Antonio Galloni – VinousThis expressive Champagne features a rich, well-spiced range of flavors chiseled by well-honed, integrated acidity, which lends a racy feel to the ripe black cherry and mulberry fruit and notes of salted almond, pink grapefruit granita, crystallized honey and pickled ginger that ride the raw silk–like mousse. Hints of chalk and spring blossoms play on the clean-cut, lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged May 2023. Drink now through 2040.

WineSpectator.comThe 2015 Brut La Grande Année was disgorged last year with eight grams per liter dosage. The wine has turned out beautifully, exhibiting a more muscular, old-school Bollinger profile in contrast to the unusually racy, fine-boned 2014 that preceded it. Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, orange oil and white flowers mingled with notions of mocha, toasted hazelnuts and fino sherry, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with a dense core of fruit framed by chalky structuring extract, concluding with a long, sapid finish. Drink 2025-2045.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateEnticing, fragrant aromas of toast, lemon zest and an earthy-smoky nuance lead to a palate of subtle Bosc-pear, mango, papaya, even pineapple flavors. Lifted by fresh acidity on the medium-bodied palate, the wine keeps unfolding in toasted walnuts, honey and a dash of bitter marmalade. It’s mouth-filling, alive with acidity and full of finesse. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comA forward vintage for La Grande Année, with warmth evident in its roasted orange, Comice pear and Mirabelle plum, all polished with a sense of savoury maturity that is very Bollinger at heart. There’s a little more oxygen influence seemingly at play than in the 2014, with brine, nuts and a little dried leaf character already taking this far beyond fruit. The food-friendly chewiness of 2015 is there, but the mousse is supple and the Chardonnay brings the wine to a close with a fine, cooked lemon snap. This will start to show its best integration from 2025 onwards, although it is open for business now. 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims, Grande Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs, all fermented in small oak barrels and disgorged in May 2023 after seven years on lees. Drink 2025 - 2034.

2023 Bondar Violet Hour ShirazMcLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinViolet Hour is a blend of fruit from 10 blocks in Bondar’s Rayner vineyard, one of McLaren Vale’s better known vineyards. Each block has a different aspect, and soils range from deep sand with ironstone rocks to clay over limestone. The Shiraz vines are some of the oldest on the property, reaching 70 years in some blocks. Whole bunch and destemmed fruit is used, and the juice spends varying times on skins, depending on the block. The wine sees only seasoned oak, usually for a period of around 10 months.
A beautifully balanced, gorgeously shaped, power packed McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are intense spicy dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and blueberry scents gently infused with clove, fennel, smoked meats, vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Rich, opulent and concentrated the palate is awash with succulent dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and blueberry fruits. Polished yet sturdy tannin structure with fresh acidity brilliantly counterpointing the lavish layers of fruit. Notions of fennel, smoky vanillin cedar and peppered meats also chime in to lend further interest. Boasting outstanding power and depth it concludes long, juicy and peppery.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Mainly from the sandy patches of the Bondar home Rayner vineyard from the top of the hill, with a small portion from lower down on clay and limestone. The value here has always been super keen. That’s as true as ever with this iteration from a cool year, typically lifted and fragrant but also with some serious import. A tick up from mid-weight, this is spicy and peppered ferruginous minerality, along with blackberry, dark cherries, tapenade, violet, cassia, bay, coffee bean and salted licorice. Red berries swell up on the palate, with a thoughtfully woven skein of tannins underwriting its class. Excellent. Drink by 2024.

Bowmore Aston Martin Dark & Intense 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $114.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%The first in a series of re-packaged Travel Retail single malts featuring the Grand Marque, Aston Martin. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Come on, really, an Aston Martin at 40% vol.? That's neither a straight-6 nor a V12, it's more a Cygnet (remember Google is supposed to be your friend). It's still advertised as being 'Dark & Intense', let's check that… Colour: golden amber. Nose: some walnut wine at first, plus horse saddle and old leather jacket, tamarind jam, marmalade, a little spent engine oil (and voilà), then ras-el-hanout and a little ginger tonic. Blood oranges. This rather leathery smoke works well I have to say, even at 40% vol. There's also the obligatory lapsang souchong and cocoa. Mouth: nice salty arrival, with lots and lots of walnuts and a cup of oversteeped lapsang souchong. Some grapefruit then, chicken bouillon, orange zests dipped into chocolate (orangettes), smoked oysters… All nice, the problem is that it would tend to nosedive after ten seconds, and that's strictly because of the minimal strength. An Aston Martin with an empty petrol tank (which is not an unseen situation). Finish: pretty short, what a pity. Some toffee. Comments: I'm absolutely sure that even at 43% vol. this would have been a winner. One solution though, find a young indie Bowie at 50-60% vol. and pour a few drops into this one. I'm sure it'll be fantastic. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Bowmore Deep & Complex 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $210.00$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%Double Gold Medal & awarded the top expression in the travel retail segment at the 2019 San Francisco Spirits Competition.
This is the duty free version of Bowmore's 18 year old classic and comes with a heavier sherry imprint due to maturation in x Oloroso and x Pedro Ximenez casks. It shows in the richer colour. Not long after it was launched in the first half of 2017, it became the distillery’s darling, picking up a double gold for its combination of ripe fruit, dark chocolate and Islay smoke at the 2019 San Francisco Spirits Competition. That's no mean feat, given that there were more than 3000 entries (the largest number in the competition's history), all blind tasted in a controlled environment. A majority almost certainly would have been whisky. David Turner, Manager at Bowmore Distillery acknowledged that the accolade was “...one of the top awards for the industry" , adding that "it's an honour to have picked up so many medals across our range. Travel retail is a major market for Bowmore, testament to the high esteem that the distillery is held in across the globe."
Of the plentiful customer reviews posted on global retailer's sites, many now seem to preference this bottling over the general release 18 year old (selling for upwards of $180 in Australia). Put it all together and it looks like a bargain. If you revel in the richness and maritime complexity that these sherry-peat hybrids express so eloquently, this should tick almost every box. Limited availability at this direct import price. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The nose is redolent of a damped-down bonfire, with stewed fruit, wood spice, and pipe tobacco. Nose: Emphatic burnt grass. Peaty. Soft smokiness. Palate: Fragrant smokiness seems to waft against an oily, earthy, background. Some seaweed. Some sherry. Finish: Not only is the smokiness sustained all the way through, it surges in the finish. Lots of salt, too. Comment: Glad to see a Bowmore with an age rather than a brand-name. 8.5/10 - whiskymag.com
The unabashedly briny opening bouquet is all peat, sea salt and salted focaccia; time in the glass serves to bring out a refined Sherry scent. Firm, powerful and impressive. There's been a resurgence in varietal cabernet franc wines of late, and this is an excellent example of why. Blackcurrant, cocoa and eucalyptus flavours feel both rock solid and bold in the mouth (in a positive way), leading to a dry, resounding finish. You have to enjoy tannin to go for this because there's plenty of it here, but in that context, it's very good. Drink by 2033.

Very Australian aromatically, with red pastilles, peppermint after-dinner mint and menthol notes. Campbeltown Loch Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLANDReduced from $169.99$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 46%"...a fully naked Campbeltowner, undisguised and maskless. Very cool proposition, and certainly a true 'regional malt'." - whiskyfun.com
This Springbank novelty could easily be mistaken for the Campbeltown Loch Blend, as the label looks almost identical - only the age statement has been dropped. It is, actually, a little more exciting than that. Instead of blending malt with grain whisky, Springbank have re-invented the label using Campbeltown single malts sourced from the district's five distilleries (or distillates): Unpeated Kilkerran forms the base, followed by Springbank, Glen Scotia, Hazelburn and Longrow. The upgrade promises a genuine celebration of Campbeltown character, and the distillates all get a showing - from the dirtiness of Glen Scotia to the minerality and citric fruits of Springbank, the chalkiness, saltiness, and florality of Kilkerran, to the peat of Longrow and the clean honeyed notes of Hazelburn. All were drawn from ex-Bourbon and x-Sherry casks and combined and bottled at Springbank, although the whisky's deep colour suggests more of the latter.
If you want to get your head around Springbank without emptying your wallet, Campbeltown Loch is about your only option. The peated elements do most of the heavy lifting, balanced by a lovely malt and sherry richness. That combination, capped off by a salivating salt and pepper tang recalls certain peatier bottlings of Springbank 10 year old (which is reasonable to assume as the inspiration for this whisky). Also bottled at 46%, there's no shortage of Campbeltown chutzpah on offer: Sweet and sooty with a coastal bite, it firmly ranks amongst the most flavoursome, characterful blended malts of recent years. Buy it whenever the price is right.
Other reviews... ...Now, I just see that this is actually a blended malt – I used to believe Campbeltown Lochs were blended Scotch, no? Looks like this one's made out of all single malts in Campbeltown, namely Springbank, Glen Scotia, Hazelburn, Macallan, Kilkerran/Glengyle and Longrow (spot the odd one out!) Colour: white wine. Nose: young, starting citric and chalky, with some lemonade and kiwi juice. Then there's sourdough, a fresh pack of lemon drops, yellow Haribos and a little lime grass. This one should repel any mosquitos, perhaps even Campbeltown's famous – and voracious - midges. Mouth: very good, with a similar chalky, doughy and lemony development, supplemented with a little fresh mint, green pepper and tiny roots and saplings (quinoa?) Finish: rather long, on pretty much the same flavours and with a smokier signature. Longrow, I presume. This wee chemicalness too… Comments: a fully naked Campbeltowner, undisguised and maskless. Very cool proposition, and certainly a true 'regional malt'. Perhaps for your favourite hipflask rather than for your most expensive crystal sniffer (a.k.a. fishbowl). 86 points - whiskyfun.com
...There’s a fruitier freshness and a slightly peppery grip added with a mineralic fizz that makes things a little more pleasing for me. Yet objectively, this remains good, easy sipping whisky and regardless of which batch you grab, you’ll be in good company. The rumours have moved towards this being mostly Glengyle malt (Kilkerran) in the mix here and that would make a lot of sense, despite that distillery only running 25% of the year (from the same team - and malt - as Springbank) they’ve been making whisky since 2004 ,and a lot more since 2018, they’ve gotta free up that precious warehouse space somehow. Why not step in to alleviate some of the demand for Campbeltown whisky with a good honest malt blend?...Very good indeed. - dramface.com
Notes from Springbank... Nose: A distinct buttery note and characteristic hint of sea salt introduce this dram, along with notes of ginger loaf and pecan pie. Palate: Creamy coffee, salted caramel, date syrup and crystallised brown sugar on the palate, with a subtle hint of peat smoke. Finish: The peat smoke builds in the finish, with a leathery note developing over time.
Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.

Caol Ila 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $134.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 43%A gentler, more feminine and food friendly expression that Islay lovers should get to know.
Despite being the largest distillery on Islay (in terms of production anyway), nearly all of Caol Ila's output ends up in blends, so much so that until 2002 when the 12-year-old was released, independent bottlings were the only recourse for malt hunters. The distillery's gently fruity-smoky style sets it apart and comes down to the production process: "...although it receives the same spec of malt as sister distillery Lagavulin, Caol Ila’s distillation regime – longer fermentation, higher cut point, taller stills, helps to reduce the heavy phenols." Our tasting revealed soft aromas of sweet peat, smoked trout, a hint of lanolin and baked citrus. Rounded, pure and impeccably clean from start to finish, the palate offers semi-sweet smoky-fruity-oily flavours counterpointed by super fine tannins. Although this is relatively young for single malt Scotch, the balance is near perfect. The finish goes long with salt, smoked meats and light lanolin through the fade. A gentler, more feminine and food-friendly expression that Islay lovers should get to know. 43%Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Funny to think how recently Caol Ila was an Islay giant that was kept pretty much under wraps by its owner. These days it has cemented its reputation as the island’s Mr. Consistent. This version shows its character the best, a nose that mixes seashore and grass with a distinct hint of smoked bacon. The peatiness isn’t dominant, but flows throughout the palate, scenting, lifting, and subtly changing the mix. A delicious oiliness makes it a great food whisky. 89 points- whiskyadvocate.com, Reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2012)
A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat-reek; at midpalate the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. Ends on a sweet malty note. Builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last. Best Buy. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com
Caol Ila (Gaelic for 'the Sound of Islay') is hidden in a quiet cove near Port Askaig on the island of Islay. Many consider this locality to be the wildest and most picturesque of the island. Situated on Loch Nam Ban, the site is ideal thanks to the abundant supply of good water. The distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson - a Glasgow businessman with a keen interest in distilling. Like Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich, the development of Caol Ila created along with it a community of its own. Without these distilleries, it's likely that there would have been little sustained human interference in these areas at all. In 1857 Henderson went out of business and the distillery was purchased by Bulloch Lade & Co. The Distillers Company Limited took over management in 1927. From this date production continued until 1972, when the entire structure of the distillery was demolished. A larger distillery was built in the same original architectural style, and production resumed in 1974.

2022 Catena High Mountain Vines MalbecMendoza, ARGENTINA$32. 99Bottle$395.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2024-2030)ABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkNicolas Catena has been instrumental in Argentina’s progress over the last three decades, bringing the country's wine industry into line with world class standards. What you can now get for your money in the present day climate are seriously good expressions of the nation's signature varietal, Malbec, that rival many Australian reds for punch and price. Made by fourth generation vintner Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, this wine is sourced from three high altitude vineyards. Each vineyard is specifically farmed in preparation for its role in the final blend. Eighty year old vines in the Lunlunta (Maipù) vineyard lend soft, sweet texture whilst the intense sunshine in the Gualtallary (Tupungato) vineyard provides explosive floral aromatics and a concentrated structure. The last component is from El Cipillo in Eugenio Bustos, which has loamy sands and thick calcareous layers sit over rounded rock. Maturation takes place in a mix of new, second and third use French oak barrels for a period of 11-13 months.
2022 was an exceptional year from every possible qualitative standpoint. Winemaker Alejandro Vigil stating: “This is the best year that I have lived through”.Juicy, supple and sleek, this is one moreish Malbec.

James Halliday - Australian Wine CompanionVery impressive for a "regular" non-vintage Brut, not only in terms of aromatic complexity - candied citrus, dried peach and fresh mirabelle plus a hint of bread dough - also in terms of texture, the creamy, rich and crisp sides of the wine neatly interlocking. Long, structured finish. A cuvee that's half 2018 and half reserve wines, some of which are a couple of years old, but many of them are five- to 10-years-old, with several over 10-years-old. “Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. It's the smoothest vodka we tried, with a slight oiliness (specific to potato vodkas) that cut beautifully against the briny funk of black caviar and held its own against the thickest black bread I'd been able to find. We found Chopin itself to be 'slightly sweet' and 'well-rounded' with 'perhaps a hint of apple.' Chopin also had a 'medium-length, pleasing burn,' but 'very little aftertaste—it's remarkably clean.' To top it off, Chopin's tall frosted bottle was the prettiest we'd seen...the panel unanimously called Chopin 'far and away the best vodka we tried.” – Alex Abramovich, “Hit me With Your Best Shot”, Slate Magazine, 2004.

92 points (Exceptional) - tasting.com - Clairin Ansyen 49 Months Vaval Single Cask #VA16CR-1 Ex-Caroni Rum (700ml)HAITI$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 47.1%
Australian Exclusive.
Rum chasers on the hunt for hard-to-find libations will be excited to get their hands on Haitian “Clairin” (artisanal rhum). Like village Mezcal, these heirloom spirits have been produced by farmers, catering for their local communities before other markets. Almost unknown outside of Haiti where they're generally dismissed by the upper class as a peasant's drink, Clairins deliver the distinctive aromas and flavours of Agricole rum or Brazillian Cachaca – and more. Once you taste them, you'll realise other white rums aren't worth worrying about.
Small craft distilleries known as 'guildives' are scattered throughout the country, often in the middle of the sugar cane fields. Villages like Cavaillon, Saint Michel De L'Attalaye and Barraderes each have their own version of Clairin emphasising their own 'terroir'. “The person with the most money in the neighborhood [often owns] the guildive, producing clairin with a donkey pressing the cane juice” explains Garcelle Menos, account manager for Boukman Clairin. “Most of the time, they’re a combination of column and pot stills, very small columns and very small pots.”
Un-hybridised sugar cane varieties with names like “Cristalline”, “Hawaii” and “Madam Meuze” are grown for their amazing intensity of flavour, despite being low yielding and so ignored by large-scale rum producers. Spontaneous fermentations are long, creating complex spirits, with every batch different from the last. Clairins are unaged, and unlike most rums which have no regulations regarding ‘flavour enhancements’, they have absolutely nothing added.
This rare, barrel-aged expression from the Vaval farm distillery is a landmark having been exclusively bottled for Australia (to our knowledge, the first of its kind). Distilled in 2016 by Fritz Vaval in Cavailon, 49 months in an ex-Caroni rum barrel has imbued a sublime secondary smokiness that sings alongside the natural intense, grassy and fruity flavours of the Clairin. Barreled on the 28th of May 2018 and bottled in June 2022, more than one taster has stated "It's hard to believe that's agricole!" 47.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Upon tasting, the vibrant aroma likely greets you first, where fresh, grassy notes of sugar cane blend seamlessly with the richer, deeper scents of oak and tropical fruits. The palate is likely to offer a delightful complexity, featuring a balance of earthy sweetness from the cane, intertwined with smoky whispers and spicy, oaky nuances. The finish is expected to be long and satisfying, leaving a warm impression that invites further sipping and contemplation.

Clairin Sonson (700ml)HAITI$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 51.1%This is the fifth single estate Clairin to be released under Velier’s “Spirit of Haiti” label. 'Sonson' is named after Stephan Kalil Saoud's distillery in the village of Cabaret. Here Clairin is produced using a single traditional open fired pot still and an indigenous sugar cane variety called 'Madame Meuze'. Bottled a natural proof, the nose is unlike any other rum: intense, sweet-yet-saline with white pepper and a grassy / tropical fruit accent that continues to evolve. Reminiscent of high-grade blanco tequila, but more like young agricole. Flavours of plantain, papaya seed, dill pickle, brine and struck match. A vivid and potent cross-genre spirit that almost defies descriptors. Fabulous! [2018 vintage 53.2% Alc./Vol. tasted]
Other reviews... Clairin Sonson is equally at home in drinks that call for unaged agricole or Cachaca – it works great in a Ti Punch and it doesn’t make a bad Daiquiri either. In terms of flavour this is my favourite Clairin thus far and aside from the finish it’s really quite excellent when you consider the rustic nature of how it is produced. Well worth seeking out. - thefatrumpirate.com

Clairin Communal Blend (700ml)HAITI$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 43%If you can't decide which Clairin to choose, 'Communal' resolves that with a blend of four Clairins: Sajous, Vaval, Casimir and Le Rochers. Pungent, fruity-yet-fresh openings turning briney, caney, grassy, evolving white pepper, candle wax and plantain-like scents over 2-3 minutes of swirling… Silky yet concentrated. Off-dry, bready, waxy, briney flavours are perfectly balanced by an invigorating, vibrant finish hinting at prunes, raisins and late marzipan. Another brilliant Clairin that pretty much clocks the white rum flavour wheel. 43% Alc./Vol.

Clairin Vaval (700ml)HAITI$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 49.3%From the village of Cavaillon, three hours drive from Port au Prince. Heirloom sugar cane called "Madame Meuze" is the focus, the cane juice distilled at the Arawaks distillery under the direction of Fritz Vaval. Founded after the war by Fritz’s father, the estate possesses 20 hectares of cane grown without fertilizers or artificial pesticides. In the glass the rum appears clear with thick legs; It's very pure on the nose with a whiff of herbal freshness and a lovely yeasty / bready / grassy character, air contact adding hints of varnish, pickle, brine, icing sugar, dilute molasses. Exceptionally soft, medium-bodied, dry and fresh with a herbal-bready entry, you also get sweet pickle flavours, brine and developing oiliness but it winds up bone dry, minerally, yeasty with anise / dill freshness lingering. Great stuff. Natural strength. [2016 vintage 48.8% Alc./Vol. tasted].

2003 Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah Magnum (1500ml)Clarendon, South Australia, AUSTRALIAReduced from $1,200.00$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2024-2029)ABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkThis is a rare opportunity to acquire one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz in magnum format at a bargain basement price with over 20 years bottle age behind it. Priced at or below most vintages of Penfolds Grange in 750ml format this is a once off offer that can never be repeated.
"Frankly, along with Penfold's Grange, this may be the greatest Shiraz being made in Australia." - Robert Parker
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very dark red hue. Hedonistically scented, sent wafting from the glass are dark plum, liquorice and blackberry aromas which are complimented by leather, vanillin cedar, earthy dark chocolate and spice notes. Rich, silky and super intense, the seductive palate is saturated with voluptuous waves of aniseed, blackberry and dark plum which gradually evolve into a leather, dusty vanillin cedar, black olive and pepper back drop. Exceptionally powerful and expansive it possesses cashmere like tannins and finishes tremendously long and plush. Tasted from a 750ml bottle we expect the magnums to look even more impressive and show less development.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

It’s hard to believe the 2003 Syrah Astralis Vineyard could be better, but it offers riveting richness, intensity, purity, and equilibrium. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.

2011 Claxton's Exploration Series Jura 12 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Isle of Jura, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 50%Differentiating from Claxton's Warehouse ranges, whiskies under their Exploration series arrive in standard, round bottles instead of the premium "flat" bottle type. Under the neck foil on each you'll find a Claxton's coin which gains you points towards their exclusive releases (if you ever happen to visit Claxton's showroom in Dalswinton!) Despite the rather plain presentation, previous shipments have delivered some gems. The value remains reasonable considering these are generally just one or two cherry-picked casks per bottling and offered at a generous 50% ABV.
Jura commenced a massive re-racking programme in 1998 which continued through to 2016. It saw 30,000 mixed barrel types of pre-1995 stocks re-filled into casks of 'higher' quality (we can assume this refers to x-Bourbon). As of 1995, all of the new make spirit is exclusively put into first fill bourbon casks, hence, a Jura from a PX hogshead is an unusual thing. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Oily (Rapeseed), bitter orange and mild herbs. Palate: Sweet grape skin with more bitter fruits. Oily mouthfeel. Finish: Oak-sweet finish with more grape notes.

2014 Claxton's Exploration Series Glen Garioch 9 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 50%We're up to the ninth release in the Exploration Series. Closed in 1968, re-opened by the Morrisons (Bowmore et al) then purchased by Beam Suntory in 1994, nowadays Glen Garioch makes largely unpeated malt from short ferments, giving a deep cereal and spice note to the distillate. The new owners have great confidence in the quality of output, with all of its production dedicated to single malt rather than blends. This special selection from Claxton's was drawn from a Tawny Port barrique at 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Rich plums, raisins, icing. Danish pastry. Palate: Rich and fruity. Lots of raisins in syrup. Strudel. Finish: Sweet and warming. Long aftertaste of raisins.
