    Closure: Stelvin

Rich, expansive and refined, this is a classic example of Yarra Valley Shiraz.

The Coldstream Hills Reserve Shiraz has been a single vineyard wine since 2014 and is made using traditional techniques in small open fermentation pots, including in some years, the use of whole clusters. The wine was matured in seasoned and new (24%) French oak barriques and vat for seven months.
Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Leaping from the glass are spicy dark plum and liquorice aromas which are complexed by notions of clove, vanillin cedar, smoked meats and peppered earth. Rich, expansive dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits engulf the beautifully fleshed, medium bodied palate. Smoky vanillin cedar, dried meat, clove and peppered earth elements lend further nuance. Displaying plenty of power, it has a polished yet sturdily built tannin structure and long, refined, pepper infused finish.

    Combier Triple Sec Liqueur (500ml)
    Saumur, Loire Valley, FRANCE
    $34. 99

    $419.88 Dozen
    ABV: 25%

Triple Sec (or curaçaos) done right are some of the finest fruit liqueurs money can buy. Some would say that the best examples are blended with old brandy, however even clear versions can make stunning standalone drinks. Between the different brands, there are differences in the types of oranges used, the combination of oranges and the type of alcohol base employed. With the exception of the cognac-infused Grand Marnier, they're (arguably) interchangeable in cocktails, including classics like the Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, Long Island Iced Tea and White Lady where they bring a sweet and complex citrus flavour to balance the other ingredients. In the end, it’s all about your personal preference as to which brand you choose and how you intend to use it. One rule holds steady - don't buy cheap. There are many substandard Curaçaos and Triple Secs that do the category a disservice.

While not as well known as its main rival, Cointreau, Combier holds the place as the world's first clear orange liqueur. They produce two Triple Secs. This is the lower abv version (25% as opposed to 40%) and it's a finer, lighter, fresher alternative to Combier's super-exuberant 'L'Original.' The aromas open floral, feminine and medium dry, at first evocative of Meyer lemons then bergamot before moving into orange pith and peel. The juicy mid palate sweetness is understated, offset by delicate citrus zest, orange oils and discreet spices, fading with pith and peel tang, hints of Earl Grey tea and icing sugar. 25% Alc./Vol.

"Comparing Combier to conventional triple sec is like comparing a Monet to a kid's fingerpainting." - tastingpanelmag.com

While not as well known as its main rival, Cointreau, Combier holds the place as the world's first clear orange liqueur. Created in 1834 by Jean-Baptiste Combier and his wife Josephine, it's made from sun dried orange peels steeped in alcohol and triple distilled in copper pot stills. Pouring crystal clear, bright and viscous, the aroma is of freshly peeled oranges / baked lemons - oily, pithy and more peel than pulp, exhibiting superb freshness and purity. Entry is glycerous and creamy leading into a juicy, plush, concentrated palate delivering a stunning explosion of ripe orange. The sweetness is tempered by lively spices. Finishes in stages, with more pith and peel entering, finally, fresh and dry, as the warmth subsides with the candied orange and zesty peel playing out at length. Riper and richer than Cointreau (which is the benchmark for the genre), but equally brilliant. 40% Alc./Vol.

"This whisky, with its style that I actively avoided for the longest time, has won me over completely. " - dramface.com

From colour to taste, this extreme release will likely be too intense for those who appreciate the distillery’s purest forms (Edradour's bourbon cask bottlings would be the better showcase). That leaves all the more for the sherry heads - and there are plenty of us. Andrew Symington's signature flourish places impact before elegance in a whisky matured entirely in first-fill Pedro Ximénez (sweet) sherry butts to mark the distillery's bicentennial. Offering a decadent profile of dried fruits, dark chocolate and toffee at a price that's completely accessible, it will be your fireside companion this winter, a dessert whisky par excellence, or a preferred dram for whenever you feel like spoiling yourself. This style isn't for everyone, but it is a rallying call to fans of sherried malts longing for the bargains of yesteryear. We have one parcel only, just landed at direct-from-the-distillery pricing. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and natural in colour.

Other reviews... Very sweet wave of PX sherry. Jammy again! Home-made cherry and forest fruit jam. It’s blackcurrants, strawberry, stewed prunes, and raisins galore. The kind of chocolate bonbons with alcoholic cherry creaminess inside. There are baking spices here, but they take a while to break through the fruit salad barricade. There’s that suggestion of Appassimento wine again. The finish is slightly drying. High cocoa content chocolate acerbity. It takes water well, and after a while that softens the experience a bit. Dilute to your own preference; it’ll play along nicely. This is a very well executed whisky. It turns out that if the casks are good and the distillate is robust and hefty enough to stand up to them instead of getting devoured by them, PX casks might be my thing after all. And this isn’t even a gentle finish; it’s full maturation for 10 years. I’m sure you can tell by now that I like it. This whisky, with its style that I actively avoided for the longest time, has won me over completely. It’s going down quicker than most bottles at the moment, and that tells me all I need to know. - dramface.com

...Not the typical Edra. Sweet, but not the over spice, nutty, dry finish that we dread. What a wonderful OB. Drinks like a well rested 22 y.o., but is too busy and diverse to notice. I wish that this revolutionary bottle could be a trend for the distillery. Definitely a best buy bottle.  - whiskybase.com

2024 Freycinet Vineyard Riesling - Last Stocks
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $29. 99

    $359.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2024-2032)
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Established in 1979 by Geoff and Susan Bull, Freycinet was the first commercial winery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Today daughter Lindy and partner Claudio Radenti who both have extensive winemaking experience from their travels around the world carry on the tradition. 2024 was a standout vintage delivering fruit of exceptional quality with concentrated flavours and ripe, juicy acidity.

A magnificently sculptured and pure Tassie Riesling that boasts explosive power and intensity

Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive glimmer of green around the outskirts. Leaping out of the glass are powerful aromatics of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some hints of orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. The palate is a combination of terrific intensity, drive and tension delivering sculptured, yet texturally engulfing flavours of lime, lemon and orange rind underpinned by mouth watering acidity. Lining the back half are green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral characters. Zingy in its feel it finishes exceptionally long, concentrated and super scrumptious.
Hard to resist now but will also cellar up to 6-8 years.
    Alc. 12.5%

    Other Reviews.....
A taut, high-tensile East Coast riesling that's all velocity and lip-smackingly pure lime and lemon fruits with hints of sea spray, crushed stone, lemongrass, grapefruit pith, citrus blossom and thirst-slaking good times. It's got a wicked minerally cadence as it cuts across the palate; a touch of clover blossom in there, too, if we're getting picky. But we're not getting picky and this is just a delicious, focused Tassie riesling. Drink by 2034.

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran Heavily Peated Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 13
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.6%

Yes, it’s that time again. Brought to market twice a year at natural strength, Glengyle's Heavily Peated 2025 release continues the trend of using high-quality bourbon casks (90%) to provide a creamy, sweet base for Kilkerran's earthy peat smoke. The remainder comes out of sherry casks with the barley peated to around 45 ppm. It's reported that the distillery is pretty happy with this formula and has settled on it going forward. Those who've tasted it generally agree that the combination hits the mark (yet again), being at least as good or better than most previous batches. On allocation in Australia. Stocks are not expected to last long. 58.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... We were rather fond of Batch 12, also released this year (WF 87) Colour: pale gold. Nose: seriously powerful at first, brushing up against cologne, then slowly the candied lemons, oysters and iodine tincture take over, bringing a piercing, clean sharpness to the whole. With water: seawater, seaweed, plaster and beach sand at low tide. Mouth (neat): perfect, farmy, very lemony, with surprising notes of Toplexil, green pepper and salt. In the end, it’s all about purity. With water: really excellent, almost like pure oyster juice, just missing a few drops of Muscadet. Finish: very long, very vertical, salty, peppery and lemony to the point of excess, but we’re all for that. Slightly youthful on the aftertaste, with green pear and a touch of rubber. Comments: still just as good and properly peaty. We now await batch #14, likely due next year. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

...Heavy smoky peat, associated with distillate which is peppery, lemony, and long aftertaste. Quite different than batch 12, which has been open awhile and may have changed. Batch 12 doesn't seem as heavily peated. I like this better, although just opened, mainly because the distillate has better flavors. - whiskybase.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Creamy butterscotch and notes of banana fritters and elderflower kick off this heavily peated dram. Palate: The peat smoke on the palate is complemented by notes of honeydew melon and Iberico ham. Finish:The smoke continues in the finish along with notes of verbena and honeycomb.

    2024 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc
    Marlborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $26. 99
    Bottle
    $323.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2025-2027)
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, herbaceous gooseberry and lime leaping out of the glass. Subtle green apple, stony mineral and grassy notes ensue. Scrumptious passionfruit, lime and green apple fruits burst across the palate with terrific intensity. Complimenting delicate herbaceous gooseberry, subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements also chime in. Displaying outstanding power and textural volume it has crisp acidity and a long, zesty finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.
    Alc. 13.5

    Other Reviews....
A stroll through an island rainforest is the best way to describe this wine. A canopy of elderflower blooms, green apple, and mangosteen flesh opens the experience, while the variety’s flourishing, leafy qualities sit at its heart in the most enticing way. Notes of cut lime, papaya skin and aloe gel weave through. The palate builds with each sip – a touch of self-raising flour mealiness, a hint of lemon-butter creaminess, all carried in an overall dry style that both quenches and intrigues. Its natural arch of acidity drives the wine forward, underpinned by a low hum of power and a full force of flavour. Best enjoyed in a wide glass, to capture its full effect. Drink by 2029.

Shanteh Wale - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2030.

1984 Janneau Vintage Collection Grand Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Vineyards suffered heavy frosts in 1984, so production was well down making this vintage quite rare. The producers hadn’t seen such disastrous frosts like it since 1977. Bottles released to date reportedly offer notes of candied fruits and rancio.

In a world of wood-aged spirits distilled from raw materials throughout the year, Armagnac stands out as a product of viticulture, subject to annual growth cycles and variations inherent to 'vintages'. Blending multiple harvests to create a consistent house style remains common, however vintage-dated Armagnacs are another thing - distilled from a single harvest, grapes are moulded by the year’s climatic conditions, partly determining outturn and quality. Vines are cultivated to obtain acidic wines, low in alcohol, resulting in fruity and floral eaux-de-vie. Most vintages are potentially marketable, however it's not a standard practise. Eaux-de-vie from a single year requires particular care and attention. Distillation and ageing must be adapted to capture the individual character of the distillate, and the Cellar Master must decide on the period it should spend in new oak. The minimum is ten years (unlike blends), but if the Armagnac is deemed capable of extended ageing, it might mean 20, 50 or even 100 years in barrel. Thus, with experience and patience, these bottlings can enter the realm of top-tier spirits.

Connoisseurs love Vintage Armagnacs because they have the ability to surprise - or at the very least - deliver more distinctive profiles than a mass blended brandy. Producers classify their diversity into five primary tastes – spices, fruits, bakery, floral, and green – with three different weights, ranging from “fine, light, and easy to drink” to “classic, rich, and well-balanced,” up to the "more powerful and expressive" vintages.

Because they're prominently labelled with the year of production, these gems have become hugely popular as gifts whereby birthdays and anniversaries can be marked by a singular bottle - a way to turn back the clock via a liquid time capsule, rekindle memories and reflect. If you're lucky enough to secure a Vintage Armagnac but aren't ready to open it, store it upright so the alcohol doesn't attack the cork, in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, there's no hurry to finish it. These spirits don't oxidise quickly like a wine or Vintage Port, but they are best consumed within a few years, as recommended by the BNIA (Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l’Armagnac).

Rich and enveloping yet remarkably fresh this is one of Australia’s most iconic Chardonnay’s.

Barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring and matured in the same barrels for a period of 11 months. Brilliant pale straw colour with a greenish tint to the edges and a watery hue. Rich and layered yet remarkably fresh, enveloping the palate are mouth filling white peach, pear, nectarine and dried honey flavours. If you were sitting quietly in a corner, contemplating the vicissitudes of life, and a glass of this exceptional chardonnay came your way, well, all would be very well indeed. And you’d perk up. It’s a wine that tends to be scintillating in youth, driven by all manner of citrus flavours – lemon, pink grapefruit with a dash of lime but also a mille-feuille of leesy lusciousness, oak spices and a moreish savouriness. It seems powerful and explosive with its acidity, drive and energy yet manages to remain classy and complex. Drink by 2032.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended. Sealed under screw cap.  Drink 2030-2047.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

This iconic Australian Chardonnay never allows standards to drop and this is yet another stellar effort from the great Chardonnay production line. A shimmering pale lemon, we have notes of spices, lemon curd, ginger, pink grapefruit, lemongrass, florals, peaches, nectarines, jasmine and stone fruits. There is a whiff of smoky oak as well and integration is proceeding well. There is complete balance here, with focus and energy. The wine is still very young and it will certainly be better if you can wait for two or three years before opening. Then enjoy it for a further ten to fifteen years. Juicy, with a supple texture and a long and lingering finish, along which the intensity is maintained for the full journey. A cracker. Drink 2025-2040.

From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
This, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is made in the traditional Amarone style whereby the grapes are dried to concentrate the aromas and flavours, as well as soften the tannins. This will be one of the last vintages that you’ll be able to get your hands on with the winery deciding to no longer make this wine due to the high production costs.

Thick and densely textured, this is a decadently rich, explosive Amarone styled Cabernet that will blow your socks off.

Incredibly dense pitch black heart with a deep very dark red black tinged hue. Potent ripe blackcurrant, Morello cherry, black plum and chocolate bullet aromas engulf the nostrils with vanillin oak, black cherry, earth and spicy cinnamon notes ensuing. Thick and densely textured, the palate boasts explosive power and off the chart’s richness. A super concentrate of ripe black currant, morello cherry, black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits saturates every corner of the mouth complimented by notions of spicy vanillin oak, earthy tobacco, black olive and dried herbs. Ripe chewy tannins provide ample structure. Finishes long and decadent.

Stylish and refined, the wine shows dark plum, sweet cherry, fine leather, olive and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a weighty palate that's plump and richly textured. Sam Kim – Wine Orbit

An absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Cab. Who says warm regions can’t do Cabernet? Sure, it might not be a Bordeaux replica, but it is delicious and drinks majestically. The name? Just like Frank ** did in attempting to expose corruption in the NYPD in the early 70s, this wine goes against the grain, as an Apassimento style Cabernet. For that, the fruit went into 10-kilo drying crates and was stored for 25 days, over this period, the grapes lost 30% of their weight. This had the effect of concentrating aromas and softening the tannins with the wine spending two years in a combination of French oak hogsheads, 60% new and 40% one-year-old. The 2020 *** Cabernet Sauvignon was made without finings and received only light filtration prior to bottling. Deep red/maroon, this has an appealing ripeness with notes of chocolate, cigar boxes, mocha, coffee beans and a hint of vanilla. The structure is seamless with juicy acidity and excellent length. Utterly delicious, this is more a cracking McLaren Vale red than the typically varietal Cabernet. Ten to twelve years. Drink 2024-2036.

Rich, youthfully bright and juicy, the concentrated palate is laden with blackberry, liquorice and fresh ripe blueberry fruits. Fennel, vanillin cedar and delicate peppered earth elements engage the back half. Fresh, energetic and succulent, it has a sturdy yet polished tannin structure which provides some underlying muscle. From '75 and '98 plantings on the Springs Hill vineyard. The '24 Paralian suite, for me, is the finest to date. All killer, as they say … The quiet power in this is something to behold – a wine of gravitas and grace. It comes in a little darker of fruit this year, though not heavy with it. Dried olive, black cherry, violet, blueberry, ground coffee, a certain sultry floral and spicy feel, with an undercurrent of nori and iodine. This is a marvellous expression, with finely tooled tannins and exceptional length. Simply brilliant. Drink by 2038.

Possessing all the hallmarks of Central Victorian Shiraz, this is a sensational value at just $16.99.

A decade ago, it was common to receive a dozen or more Port Dundas releases every year. They're becoming less frequent, almost to a stop, but that's been on the cards for a while. As a permanently closed distillery the remaining liquid has to run out some time. Now would seem like a good time to buy. Bottlings of this age are approaching full maturity, typically layered with flavours of sweet corn, vanilla, golden syrup, pastry and sometimes hints of dried banana from the American oak.  218 bottles were drawn from a bourbon hogshead at 57% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    "A tropical fruit-fest from an overlooked distillery" - dramface.com

This bright gold coloured Longmorn from a Bourbon barrel departs from the sherry influence that's almost standard for Signatory, instead opting for a vibrant and fruity expression. 226 bottles were filled at 56.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The palate pretty much delivers on the nose. There’s a little vanilla, but generally speaking the story here is one of tropical fruits and confectionery. I get boiled sweets – pear drops, specifically – and some aniseed balls, along with some orange zest, some water melon, some coconut, some more lychee and some pineapple. There’s also a slightly tannic note, which shows itself in the form of black tea and a hint of chamomile. If I dig around for it, I can also find some lavender, although it is quite subtle... this is very good whisky. If you like your tropical, ex-bourbon matured, single cask expressions, then you could do a lot worse than hunting down a bottle of this. - dramface.com

2007 Signatory Vintage Caol Ila 17 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.7%

Caol Ila is another distillery that seems to be quietly dropping off independent portfolios, most likely due to a change in Diageo's policies rather than by choice, as the quality is always high and the style is in demand. Cask #6 yielded 677 bottles from an oloroso sherry butt. Anticipate notes of ashy smoke, seashore, cured meats and a rich fruitiness wrapped up in an intense, peppery delivery. Think bacon-wrapped scallops! 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... quite complex, strong with a strong cask strength, but definitely drinkable neat. Nose: Smoke, first like when smoking ham, then the hospital-like aroma comes into play. Nutty and with roasted notes. Afterwards, aromas of lemon emerge. There are also chocolate, leather, and cherries. Taste: Smoke – ham smoke. Cherries and leather, nutty again. Caramel and perhaps a hint of melon. Ham and chocolate again. Finish: Sherry and chocolate. - whiskybase.com

2008 Signatory Vintage Dailuaine 17 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND

    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.2%

Even as prolific a bottler as Signatory Vintage have released but a handful of Dailuaines over the years. We're pleased to see it back as part of the Cask Strength Collection. Dailuaine's robust distillery character is known to handle sherry maturations well, where it becomes big, boisterous and complex. This one isn't full term sherry matured, so it may be more about power and elegance than brute force flavour. 660 bottles were decanted from cask #3 at a punchy 57.2% ABV, following a finishing period in a first-fill oloroso butt. Non chill filtered.
