'Glansa' which is Old Norse for "shining storm-laden skies" is a gently smoky Scapa initially aged in first-fill American oak casks, then finished in casks that previously contained peaty whisky. Compared to the unpeated Skiren, you get more of a saline / ocean breeziness to the nose; the peat is earthy but slight, the barley defined by orchard fruits; It's also fuller and spicier than its sibling, the peat adding an extra layer, weaving its way through the honeyed malt, followed by hints of sweet tea biscuits and baked fruits through the sprightly, tangy finish. This presents a dainty, airy kind of smoke, akin to Ardmore, or Scapa's famous neighbour - a good thing, as the distillate's finer points could easily be smothered. This has been sensitively handled. The result is a delicious 'aperitif' island style, possibly unique to Orkney. 40% Alc./Vol.

...Madeira notes on the nose, with vanilla, honey, and pears. Richly fruity on the palate, with cocoa powder, vanilla, caramel, and mild wood smoke. Dark berries emerge from the background. The dark fruits continue through the lengthy finish, where smokiness increases. 87 points

[+/- 2021 bottling]...With an NAS at 40% vol., we don't speak much. It seems that this is finished in ex-peaty-malt casks, which is just in-cask blending in our book. They should call these (many do that these days) blended malts, no? Colour: gold. Nose: there, naturally, this rather works, with a feeling of Ardmore and some rather lovely whiffs of meadow flowers and lighter compost. I'm even finding notes of fino sherry (that mineral smoke) and fermented plums. Oh and bandages and ointments in the background. Mouth: a blended malt, rather on smoked coffee, with some cigar ashes and, once again, a rather smoky kind of sherry. We're extremely far from Scapa's light honeyed floralness, but indeed it's a fine drop. Good blended malt. Finish: I'm also finding a little mustard in this fine blended malt. More fino, that's great. Comments: congrats to the blenders, very fine piece of work. At 46% vol., this well-crafted in-cask blended malt would be a killer. Brilliant pale straw colour with flashes of green to the edges and a watery hue. Delightful lime and green apple aromas infused with fresh herbs jump out of the glass followed by some citrus and stony mineral notes. Terrific concentration and textural shape with zingy lime, green to red apple, guava and pear fruits flooding the mouth. Infusions of fresh herbs and mineral elements lend further interest. Crisp acidity with a long, wonderfully fresh and beautifully fleshed finish. A superb example of Vermentino.

Established in 1975, this little known estate is one Heathcote’s oldest and along with Jasper Hill and Mt Ida was one of the pioneering vineyards of the region. Further plantings were made in 1996, the dry grown vines from both vineyards now well established with deep roots in the mineral rich Cambrian soil. Winemaking is undertaken by the talented Mark Hunter from Sanguine Estate and maturation takes place in French oak barriques for a period of 18 months.
Dense, powerful Heathcote Shiraz with lashings of black fruit framed by muscular tannins.
Opens with spectacular colour density featuring a super saturated pitch black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate fill the nostrils with spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and dense the full bodied palate is engulfed with succulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which are framed by a muscular tannin structure. Relatively stern yet opulent in it’s feel, earth, spicy vanillin cedar, subtle dark chocolate and blackpepper elements lend further nuance. Deep and powerful it finishes long and juicy yet robust.

As is always the case with these 'Secret Signatorys', Macallan isn't stated on the label, however the ever-reputable whiskyfun.com have reviewed bottlings from the same "M" series and their classification and tasting compass points firmly towards Edrington's darling. Matured for 18 years in a first-fill sherry butt (presumably oloroso), this promises all those lovely rich aromas and flavours of dark fruits, chocolate, manuka honey and crème brulee that sherry heads consistently seek out. Few tasting notes are available on this batch, but hopefully that list extends to classic Macallan descriptors like orange marmalade, dried figs, cigars and no sulphur! Judging by reviews for other (M)s, it should be pretty darn good. Signatory's already reasonable asking price is made all the more sweet by direct import pricing. We've received a small share of the 658 numbered bottles produced, un-chillfiltered. 58.4% Alc./Vol.

A mix of heavy Wedderburn and medium bodied Plummer pot-still distillates, aged for up to 3 years and bottled at a potent strength. The Smith & Cross brand is steeped in tradition, both in terms of history and character. The name goes back to 1788, referencing an English trading company that was importing vast quantities of rum and sugar from Jamaica to the UK. The rum itself is described as "old fashioned", pre-dating the trend for sweetened styles that's so prevalent today. Hampden Estate's stills are famous for delivering funky notes like caramelised banana, tropical fruit and a complexing earthiness. Their rums are typically absent of chill filtration, excess dilution or added sugar. Hence, this is what you might call 'old-school' rum. It's exotic flavour profile and punchy strength have made it a bartender's favourite for Tiki cocktails, but you can also showcase its high esters in a classic Daiquiri or Mai Tai. The Kingston Negroni is a contemporary alternative, where Smith & Cross' baking spice notes mingle with red vermouth, while the rum's sweet molasses is balanced by the gentian-forward red bitters. In a similar vein, stir Cocchi Vermouth di Torino with Smith & Cross, a little maraschino and orange bitters and you have a Martinez with a genuine reggae beat!

...Smith & Cross is definitely not the sweeter newer style of rum which have been more prevalent since the 50’s and 60’s. It is no Ron Zacapa or Diplomatico. It is a million miles away from that. It is in many ways like Ronseal – it does exactly what it say on the tin (bottle). Smith & Cross make no allusions or false claims about their product. As a rum to recommend it's a difficult one you either like dunder heavy Jamaican rum or you don’t! I’ve had around 100ml of the stuff during this review and I can certainly feel it! The ABV obviously attributes to this! This is a good rum – well made and constructed and has no pretences about being anything other than an old fashioned hard hitting Jamaican pot still. 'The lava of the Cuillins' - that's how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster: the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, it achieved a unique style. In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now-immortal Macallan. Talisker has continued strong since under the ownership of Diageo. An individual malt that remains an island classic, Talisker invariably offers a great sniff. At ten years old, the aromas are pungent-yet-fresh with Islay-like seaweedy smokiness and sweet fruity malt. There's a bold maritime influence on the palate too, perfectly complemented by a spicy, very peppery lingering finish. A little honey threads its way through the beautifully balanced spirit. ...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker’s smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. A blend of 52% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir, 9% Pinot Meunier aged for a minimum of 2 years on lees. A satiny mousse slowly fades into a salmon pink coloured base that has a fine, persistent bead coursing through it. Attractive pear and strawberry aromas intermingle with raspberry, brioche and subtle lees notes. Crisp and stimulating, the palate has a savoury, flavour packed profile of pear, strawberry and raspberry fruits which meld into a brioche, yeast lees and baked bread background. Lively acidity with a long, very dry finish that has a slightly chalky feel to it.

This salmon-pink rosé is beautifully complex, with gentle savouriness giving the mid-palate presence and depth. A thread of gorgeous acidity sails effortlessly through the wine. Every element is beautifully balanced and refined, from the warm strawberries and baked bread nuances to the faint dried rose petal tones. A sophisticated drop, simply excellent for the price!

Notes on Glenallachie 12YO... The GlenAllachie have done it again! The 12 Year Old has won the award for World's Best Single Malt at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards, an honour it previously received in 2021 for Batch #4 of its 10 year old Cask Strength release. Billy Walker considers the 12 year old to be the heart of the core range with some of the very best virgin oak, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez casks selected. It is slightly less robust than the ten year old, though just as deeply coloured and easily one of the more flavour-packed 12 year olds going around, opening with notes of chocolate box and Turkish delight followed by a medley of dried fruits, cocoa, clove, honey and vanilla, plus no shortage of concentration on the palate; A saturate of dried fruits and spices, orange oils, citrus blossom, chocolate box and dried apricots combine with fine astringency for excellent sweet-dry balance. Overall, fresher, and with a little more 'breed' than the brawny 10. If you enjoy exuberant sherried styles, then this will be right up your alley. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 92 points

Notes on Glenallachie 12YO Moscatel Wood Finish... Initially aged for over 8 years in ex-Bourbon barrels and then finished for approximately 42 months in hand-selected Moscatel barriques (a Portuguese sweet dessert wine) imparting floral aromas and a luxuriously smooth texture. It's another decadent, fruit-forward Speysider, typical of GlenAllachie’s celebrated wood-finish lineup. Bottled exclusively for Europe, it's unlikely we'll see this one again! 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... The Moscatel cask is mainly noticeable in the nose, where it pours out of the glass very sweet and sticky and light fruity (gooseberries, light grapes, star fruit, etc.). The fruit flavors integrate nicely into the light Glenallachie character without overwhelming the whisky. There is a slight spice in the finish, but it is much lighter than many of its distillery siblings. Overall, nice summer whisky with a lot of pressure and well-integrated alcohol. Whisky reviewers often say that modern day GlenAllachies are unashamedly 'cask-driven' - as opposed to emphasising the distillate. Precisely what that means and whether or not it's a criticism isn't something that's straightforward to answer or easy to quantify. At the end of the day, if something tastes good, most drinkers are not going to be nitpicking (especially when the price is right). Whether you think heavy barrel input is a plus or a minus, GlenAllachie's series of natural strength ten year olds have been the recipients of considerable praise, with Batch #4 awarded the ultimate accolade as "World's Best Whisky" at the World Whiskies Awards in 2021. From our own experience, there are plenty of people who appreciate the richness that these whiskies deliver, enhanced by a range of cask types, and not entirely sherry. For Batch #10, there’s an unspecified portion of red wine and virgin oak casks in the mix (in contrast to the 12 and the 15 year releases). Combine that with a high ABV and non chill filtration, and you have a flavour bomb that sweetens up with water. Normally these editions retail for around $200 in Australia. At direct import pricing, now is the time to buy!
Other reviews... a whisky that’s not exactly about showcasing the characteristics of the new make. Instead, Pedro Ximènez, Oloroso, red wine and virgin oak casks were used... This is seemingly all about the cask. Arriving on cracked black peppercorns, cloves, a touch of ginger and some mocha. Also peach pits, some cherry liqueur and eucalyptus. Somewhat vinous... A quintessential example of an engineered whisky. The GlenAllachie 10 Years Cask Strength Batch 10 is well-designed. The Master Distiller comments, at full strength the prominent character of the spirit is pear. When ‘one cut’ of water is added, the strength is reduced to around 40%, and almond biscotti steps forward as the keynote. 50.3% Alc./Vol.

Diageo launched the Singleton label in 2006 to rival the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. It went on to become the world’s number one selling single malt brand, now with a triune of labels (the others being Glen Ord and Dufftown). A typically a soft and creamy whiskey – hence this year’s title - here you also get to experience Glendullan at full cask strength, with part of the maturation in French oak casks that previously contained White Burgundy (Chardonnay). Tasting from a 20ml sample yielded notes of digestif biscuits, delicate orchard fruit juiciness and drying oak - a simple yet effective combination that equates to a broad appeal sipper. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Green apple flesh and light honey on the nose, but it’s mild and delicate and takes time to open up, adding gentle floral notes, Bartlett pear, and white pepper. Caramel apple slices, pepper, white chocolate, grapefruit, white grape, and hints of dried banana and caramel chocolate round out a smooth tasting experience, but this one is at its best with a little water. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

It’s a rare achievement in this industry for a wine to maintain its price point for more than 20 years without sacrificing quality, even more so when it's priced under $10. But the Three Brothers Reunited Shiraz has done just that. Most new labels (particularly in the sub $20 category) start with a bang and over deliver in the first couple of vintages in an attempt to win new customer's loyalty. However, in follow up releases they often stretch expectations of quality in order to meet increased demand. Gradually the brand fades away as customers are disillusioned with what's become a lesser wine. Three Brothers, on the other hand, has made quality and consistency its number one priority, only gradually increasing production while growing a very loyal customer base that's made this our top selling red for over 20 years.
Juicy and silky textured this is a terrific, everyday drinking Shiraz for just $10.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass with impressive intensity are aromas of dark cherry, liquorice and dark plum which are interwoven with some scorched earth, vanillin spice and peppered dried herb notes. A touch lighter in weight than the 2019 vintage, the medium bodied palate is layered with rich, juicy dark plum, dark cherry and liquorice fruits which carry a silky flow. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and pepper elements are threaded through the back half. Slightly grainy yet polished tannins with an amply fruited, pepper laced finish.

Rich, concentrated and voluptuous with a textural flow of liquid silk.
This single site Grenache comes from the Harris Vineyard located in Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. Grown as bush vines in iron stone rich brown loam and clay soils it sees 18 months maturation in 2400 litre Frenck oak foudre.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a dark red hue. Dark raspberry, ripe cherry and liquorice aromas waft through the nostrils trailed by some vanillin spice, earth and subtle peppered fennel notes. Rich, concentrated and voluptuous, silky smooth flavours of dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry power across the palate. Vanillin spice, earth, subtle fennel and pepper characters lurk in the background. Velvety tannins finishing exceptionally long, opulent and seductive.

In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves. As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood. Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. Unbelievably rich, dense and thick, the palate rocks V8 Bi Turbo like torque, decadently coated with a liqueur like concentrate of blackberry, dark to black plum, liquorice and earthy mocha flavours. Showing less toast than recent vintages, it still possesses a strong vanillin oak component yet remains perfectly balanced. Fennel, dark chocolate and spice elements lend further complexity. It’s statuesque tannin structure largely absorbed by the sheer weight and density of fruit. Incredibly expansive, deep and voluminous it concludes with mind blowing length.

The 2021 The Laird is from the Laird vineyard, planted in 1958. This is dark, dense and brooding in its styling, showcasing a depth that the Forebear expresses differently. The latter vineyard (the Hillside vineyard) is almost a hundred years older than the Laird, and I find this to be a curious and interesting fact that bears little on the quality of the wine but heavily impacts/defines the character. The first time the fruit was sourced was in 2004, but it was 2005 that the first Laird was produced; the vineyard was finally purchased in full by Torbreck in 2014. The vineyard is split in its soil types, with black and red clay east to west, and the two sections are picked at different times, as the fruit ripens differently. So, to the wine. Aromatically the wine leads with cocoa and cigar, armchair leather and old books. The palate follows this same smoking-room character and veritably stains the palate in flavor and length. This is a wine of enormous impact, one that lingers and stays in the mouth for ages after the wine has gone. The wine is moody and late-night in its vibe. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. The Woodcutter’s Shiraz is sourced from Torbreck’s younger vineyards located in the prime Barossa sub regions of Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer.
Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in a mixture of cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for 6-7 days. It is then basket pressed to well-seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres where it’s matured for 12 months.
Hands down one of Barossa’s most consistent wines, the 2024 Woodcutter’s delivers an abundance of rich, succulent fruit with Torbreck’s signature flamboyance and power.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark purple black hue. Wafting out of the glass with classic Torbreck hedonism are dark plum, freshly crushed black cherry and liquorice aromas which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and pepper notes. Rich, densely concentrated and voluptuous, propelled across the multi layered palate is a thick coating of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Lurking underneath are notions of vanillin cedar, smoky fennel and peppered earth. Velvet smooth tannins with a long, seductive finish that oozes flamboyance.

One that proclaims to be the crème de la crème of PX’s and with six centuries of sherry production under their belts, Valdespino can lay claim to being one of the oldest sherry houses in the region. In a process called Soleo, after harvesting, the grapes are sun dried for two weeks to concentrate the sugar and turn the grapes into raisins. After partial fermentation of the must the wine is fortified and then enters the soleras where it’s aged for between 10-12 years in American oak casks.

Deep sienna brown colour with deep olive green hue. Wonderful nose filled with the aroma of toffee, molasses, spice and brandied ripe raisins. The palate is a viscous treasure with its rich luscious texture and oil like consistency. Totally mouthfilling flavours of spice, honey, toffee and crushed dried raisins fill the mouth. Incredible length – perfect harmony with clean finish and exceptionally long aftertaste of treacle, caramel, honey and raisins. Perfect with chocolate cake and a must with the Christmas pudding.

Pedro Ximenez is often referred to as “Black Sherry” due to its dense, dark colour. This is a superb example of the style made entirely from the Pedro Ximenez grape and is a wonderful pairing for chocolate dishes of any sort (or that ‘special’ mid year Christmas celebration being the perfect wine with Christmas pudding). The wine has the viscosity of oil. Very dark sienna brown colour with olive green hue. Superb nose of mollasses, treacle, crushed dried honeyed raisins. Rich and luscious, totally mouthfilling with a silky, oily texture which disolves into honeyed toffee. Layers of treacle and caramel add further depth and complexity to the wine. Sweet, yet clean finish with exceptionally long aftertaste.

The 2024 Chardonnay is mealy, nutty and spicy on the nose, with a framing of subtly toasty oak. In the mouth, the wine comes together, showing a textural creaminess and wide complexity, while the purity of the Margaret River acidity races across the palate at pace. It was wild fermented and matured in French barrique (30% new), with a total élevage of 15 months, including five in tank prior to bottling. This is routinely a superb wine, offering complexity and depth at a reasonable price point. The 2024 vintage was challenging, as it was hot and dry (breaking records in both categories); however, in a global context, it remained no more than moderate in its extremes. The whites, if anything, show a little firmness in their structure, given the slightly earlier picking—a decision no doubt undertaken in order to preserve fruit quality and natural acidities. Walnut Block’s Chardonnay, planted in 1996 with the Mendoza clone, is known for its low yields and ‘hen and chicken’ fruit set which provides a high skin-to-juice ratio, thus resulting in a wine that possesses both depth and concentration of flavour. Maturation takes place in French 500 litre oak puncheons with wild yeasts from the vineyard providing a natural fermentation. The wine is left to develop in barrels for a period of 12 months.

West Cape Howe's Old School Chardonnay is made the way Chardonnay used to be – rich, textured and full-flavoured. Sourced from specific vineyard blocks in Mount Barker, the wine was barrel fermented and matured in French oak (20% new) for a period of 10 months. Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.

This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. ...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had. It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used. W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable. At the price it is also very good value. W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is. It is a very good white overproof mixer. ...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation. When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. Renown as one of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets, Wynns John Riddoch is made from parcels of the estates best fruit and is only produced in exceptional vintages.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass are captivating aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry which are complimented by vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle earth, violet and traces of bay leaf. Rich and concentrated yet refined and structured, the medium to full bodied palate is redolent in fleshy red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and bay leaf accents. Fine grained, sturdily built tannin framework yet quite polished in it’s feel. Marrying finesse with power it finishes very long and eloquent with a deep core of fruit.

Blackcurrant leaf, acaí and prune skin. Black coffee, vanilla pod, ash and charcoal. Acidity wisps about the palate like magic, a mesh of thread-like tannins pull and draw the focus. A hint of dark chocolate bitters; the wine finishes perky with echoing tunes of granite. It's just so centered and chic. Pure cabernet poise. Drink by 2038.

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2051.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. Drink 2024-2054.

This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Wynns John Riddoch is stylish and built for the long haul. It takes a couple of days to show its true colors. It radiates with blackcurrant, gravel and dried mint aromas, with a dusting of earth all wrapped up in a gentle blanket of French oak. Composed and super refined, the wine is underpinned by a line of seductive yet firm tannins with killer length and balance to finish. It is already very approachable but with serious staying power. Made from a collection of gnarled old bush vines with an average vine age of 75 years, 75% of the blend spent 10 months in seasoned French oak puncheons and hogsheads.
Semi translucent vibrant ruby red colour with black shaded edges and a light crimson red hue. Fragrant red raspberry and red liquorice scents sail through the nostrils with complimenting notes of cherry, scorched earth and pepper also evident. Rich, power packed and super juicy, the mid weighted palate is engulfed with red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits. Lending further nuance are vanillin confectionary, earth and pepper elements. Possessing vibrant acidity and velvety tannins, it has a plump, bouncy feel finishing long, fresh and succulent.

This one, medium-bodied, highly perfumed and aromatic, and with a delicious, crunchy, vibrant, supple medium-bodied palate loaded with red fruits, a little chocolate, and some slightly leafy notes. A richer, more opulent rendition of Yalumba’s Signature that has a long and quite sumptuous conclusion.
A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz first produced in 1962, Yalumba’s Signature pays homage each vintage to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba. The 2023 vintage’s signatory is Yalumba’s trade marketing manager, Peter Sawrey who has been responsible for writing the last 32 Signature back labels. This year’s release marks the 52nd vintage of Yalumba The Signature.
From vines with an average age of 23 years the 2023 Signature is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (22% of which was new oak) for a period of 19 months. Impenetrable inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. A mix of blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils. Vanillin cedar, tobacco, hints of dark chocolate and bay leaf follow on. Rich, opulent and full bodied, the seductive palate is flooded with blackcurrant, liquorice, dark plum and lush blackberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco and bay leaf accents linger across the back half. Velvety yet underlyingly sturdy tannin structure. Deep and powerful it has a long and quite sumptuous conclusion.

Yalumba's iconic blend sees 55/45% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz with the '23 release. Again, the release impresses with its fruit purity, elegance and cellaring potential. Deep blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruit with underlying layers of brown spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil case, roast meats, dried herbs and black olive tapenade. Beautifully composed on the palate with a firm yet kinetic, fine-grained tannin structure, lacy acidity and a finish that sails on gracefully for ages. A cracking release. Drink by 2055.

We might be yet to learn who is to be honoured with the 2023 Signature, but whomsoever it is should be well pleased. This is a cracking release, one of their best. An opaque centre with a dark maroon rim, there is still vanillin oak evident on the nose, but it is integrating well. The aromas include notes of dried herbs, black fruits, graphite, licorice, mocha, chocolate, plums and cassis. This is balanced, youthful, offering real persistence and coiled power. The palate sees the move to gorgeous chocolate notes. A wine with serious length, there is much to love here.

This is the seventh release of Yalumba’s flagship wine, the ‘Caley’ and it’s up there with their best yet. A classic marriage of two noble grape varieties sourced from two of Australia’s greatest wine regions, Coonawarra and Barossa it’s a blend of 74% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Barossa Shiraz. The wine is matured for 18 months in a mix of 21% new French oak barriques with the balance in 1 year and older French oak barriques.
A seamless blend of Cabernet and Shiraz highlighted by extraordinary length and wonderful finesse.
Pours with spectacular colour density featuring an inky black heart alongside a deep dark red black hue. Soaring through the olfactory senses is a complex matrix of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry scents interwoven with vanillin cedar, subtle earthy dark chocolate, tobacco, pepper and bay leaf notes. Rich yet gorgeously refined and structured, the mid weighted palate is flooded with red to black currant, liquorice, dark chocolate and ripe mulberry fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and bay leaf infused back drop. Displaying immaculate tannin integration and outstanding power, it concludes long, highly finessed and sophisticated.

At this viewing (and we are a long way off from this wine's intended release), we are in for a very special wine – Yalumba's flagship, from the excellent 2021 vintage. It is a picture of elegance and fruit power in one package. There is a glass-staining deep crimson colour for starters. The fruit, seemingly reduced to an essence, is all blackberry, cassis, black cherry and dark plum. Hints of deep spice, blackforest cake, licorice, cedar, tobacco pouch, bouquet garni, black olive tapenade, pencil shavings, roast beef, earth, veal glace and dark chocolate. The tannins are powdery, layered and in perfect resolution, the oak sitting simpatico with the deep fruit, the finish stretching out for a considerable length of time. The best Caley release thus far for mine. Drink by 2024.

It might be suspicion only but one feels that our venerable old Barossa producer, Yalumba, may have felt that, as impressive as its portfolio of wines is, the world did not see them having a release which challenged the Granges and the Hills of Grace and a surprising number of new releases at ridiculously high and arguably undeserved prices. Enter this wine, although it still sits well below how others when we start talking cost, but then that is only to its advantage. They opted for the great Aussie red blend to take it away from the usual single variety rock stars. It is also a blend of regions with the Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and the Shiraz from the Barossa. There have been some absolutely superb releases of this wine over the years but for me, none better than this 2021. It is a superstar. Under cork. Gleaming blood red/maroon, the nose reveals notes of bright cherries, tobacco leaves, spices, well integrated oak, plums, blackberries, aniseed, cassis and beef stock. It is subtle and seductive, generous and plush, offering a fine line of acidity in great length. There are silky tannins on the lingering finish. Superbly focused, this is surely the best Caley to come my way (and I have seen them all). Stonkingly good, if one wishes to get technical. Thirty years with ease. Drink 2026-2056.

The 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz hails from an excellent year in South Australia. The season was warm but not hot (in fact, it has been described as cool, although I think "mild" and "benign" are more accurate terms) and offered both growers and makers the opportunity to get the best of their vineyards and produce some of the best wines possible. These should be exceptionally long-lived wines. So here, the 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz leads with a nose of deep dark chocolate, dark fruits, mahogany and black olive tapenade. In the mouth, the tannins are both intense and profuse, encasing the fruit at this early stage yet promising many years in the future to come. This is persistent and long, powerful and concentrated. Sealed under Diam and wax. Drink 2026-2051.

This is not only the greatest wine to ever emerge from the hallowed halls of Yalumba, it is categorically the finest exemplar of the great Australian blend of the modern era, and the equal of the greatest in history. Kevin KG Glastonbury’s relentless fanaticism has fused Coonawarra Cabernet with Barossa shiraz (26%) to perfection, and I use this word very deliberately.
While I was not alive at the time to have the privilege of tasting it in its youth, it has perhaps not been since Max Schubert’s legendary 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A that this union has been mastered with such breathtaking harmony. Since its inaugural release a decade ago, The Caley has set the standard for refinement in cabernet shiraz, reincarnating the Coonawarra/Barossa blends of Yalumba of a half- century ago to become the first wine to win Matthew Jukes and my The Great Australian Red competition four times with three vintages, each of which I scored 98-99 points. 2021 embraces this profound legacy and takes it further to establish an all-new benchmark. It elevates this distinguished label by effortlessly contrasting greater depth of black fruits, higher lift of violet fragrance, more energetic, cool season acidity and more profound confidence of tannins that are at once finer and more velvety and yet somehow stronger, more rigid and more enduring - the pinnacle of KG’s life work. I have bestowed a perfect score on an Australian table wine only once in the past decade, and The Caley 2021 is every bit deserving. Be sure to be first in line when it is unleashed on 1 May 2026.

I am infinitely grateful to have creator, creative and creation knowledge of this wine, from its inception to this moment in time. All vintages, all progressions, all inflections and all moments of ‘worry’ have been shared, and so when a wine, and there are few on the planet with this epic consistency of production, is released, the world must pay attention. There is so much class here, it is extraordinary. How would you place this wine if you were an alien landing at our intergalactic hub in search of a refreshing libation? It could only be a wine from the 5263 quadrant of SA, which I am sure an alien could compute faster than most humans. But there is a looming sense of disquiet about this 74% Coonawarra wine, because it has an x-factor that transports into an otherworldly plane that is simply jaw-dropping. My wine mind does all it can to personify every sip I taste and yet, as much as I admire all the James Bonds, Hans Solo, and even, and this might sound somewhat incongruous, the Jackson Lambs of this world, this wine has no earthly human form synonym. It soars, mythical, half-human, half-deity, and it holds back more than it gives, and then releases unfathomable mysteries when you momentarily switch off. It is, in short, epic. I wondered if any wine could eclipse the inaugural 2012 The Caley, and then a handful of them have done just this. 2021 is the most recent to do so, and I am thrilled to bring it to your attention.

Matured in French oak puncheons for a period of 10 months. Semi translucent ruby red in colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Wonderfully fragrant nose with a bouquet of violet, red to dark cherry and wild strawberry trailed by hints of anise, rhubarb, forest floor and spicy cedar. Light, fresh and supple in its flow, the moreish palate is decorated with red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits. Subtle anise, dried herb, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lie underneath. Polished fine grained tannins with a long savoury, red fruited finish laced with spice.

Sumac and strawberries, paprika and lingonberries. Red fruit is taut and crunches with bursting acidity. A small portion of new oak adds some floral spice, potpourri and rose spray. Some Jarrah wood, cedar and red clay earth tones add further dimension. I find it so hard to fault the Yering Station line for its fruit purity, presence and price point. All is considered and makes for a harmonious drink, now and in the near future. This will show well in another 3-6 years further. Drink with simmered slices of thin pork in a cabbage and mushroom stew. Drink 2026-2032.

The Corte Giara range is an offspring of the famous Allegrini family in the Valpolicella region. Rich, juicy and concentrated, the mouth is engulfed with spicy red raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits. Combining magnificent power with a tense, sculptured feel, notions of crushed rock, fresh herbs and peppered earth lend further nuance. From the biodynamic Warboys Vineyard; 50% whole bunches; 16 months in French puncheons. This is moodier but also finer than the ’21 – more savoury, spicy and powered by authoritative tannins. The ’22 vintage saw many top Vale grenaches in this vein, with the structure sometimes forbidding early on. But what a joy those wines are now, and so too this. Relatively pale of hue, with aromas of cranberry and redcurrant rendered in savoury tones. Pressed flowers, dark spices, rosehip tea, warm bricks, bresaola and tar, the fruit intensity coiled into the structure, delightfully nervy and tense, drawing long and flavours fanning out strikingly. Superb. Drink by 2034.

This release is on song. Black pepper and peppercorn characters float through cherry and plum fruit flavour. It's lively, it has enough depth, it finishes well and it charms throughout. Campbell Mattinson – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
This is good. A cooler climatic expression that remains distinctly Australian, rather than playing the reductive hand of an ersatz Rhone. An exceptional nose of mace, clove, blue fruits, olive and briar, backed by a wave of beef bouillon and iodine-umami warmth. The tannins, a clatter across the middle, with a bow of dutiful acidity drawn to just the right degree of tension. Some scrubby menthol dries the finish ever so slightly. This said, this is a delicious wine of immense personality and soul. Drink or hold.

A bold and juicy Cotes du Rhone that has a chewy mouth feel.

With an average annual production of around 4 million bottles, this wine is a model of consistency year in year out and one of Cotes du Rhone’s best buys. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre sourced from vines with an average age of 35 years. Maturation takes place in oak casks for a period of 18 months.
Dense black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Black raspberry and liquorice scents waft through the nostrils followed by some ripe black cherry, dried herb, earthy incense and pepper notes. Rich, concentrated and lush, the weighty palate is swamped with juicy black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits. A ripe chewy tannin structure imparts a firm, robust mouth feel. Infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth and pepper the undercard. Long opulently fruited finish.

This latest Nicks Secret Shiraz comes from a relatively new Barossa producer that has hit hard times and needs some fast cash. Made from the spectacular 2021 vintage, fruit was sourced from a number of different growers with maturation taking place in a mixture of French, Hungarian and American oak barrels for a period of 9 months.

Engulfing the nostrils is a heady wave of liquorice, ripe black cherry and dark plum aromatics which are followed up by some gently smoked vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, plush and concentrated, the weighty palate is seductively layered with a coating of liquorice, ripe black cherry and dark plum fruits. Smoky vanillin cedar, earth and peppered fennel elements the undercard. Velvety textured it has a silky smooth tannins and a long opulent finish.

Made from 92 year old unirrigated vines located in McLaren Vale’s famed Blewitt Springs sub district, this superb Grenache comes from the same estate as the 2021 Nicks Secret TW Barossa Valley Grenache. Normally selling for around $60, it delivers out of this world value at just $22.99 as a Nicks Secret.
Rich, powerful and muscular in its structure, this is Blewitt Springs Grenache at its very best.
Matured in 500 litre French oak puncheons for a period of 9 months with 15% whole bunch fruit included in the fermentation process. Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a red to dark red hue. Fragrant dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry aromas show ample volume with some crushed rock and peppered fennel notes also chiming in. Boasting magnificent power, concentration and richness yet remarkably light on it’s feet, this sublime expression of Blewitt Springs Grenache bears remarkable resemblance to some of Clarendon Hill’s finest. Dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits are flayed across the palate with vanillin spice, subtle scorched earth and peppered fennel elements lending further nuance. Juicy yet chiselled feel with fine bony tannins and energetic acidity shaping the exceptionally long and succulent finish.

A stylish and exquisitely crafted Grenache from this outstanding sub-region within McLaren Vale. It always produces wine of such finesse and restraint, yet within it is the intensity and drive that is part of this region. Some whole bunches went in here, and it was naturally fermented with only light pressings included. The oak treatment was reasonably subdued in 500-litre French oak and stainless steel punctions for about 9 months, so the oak never intrudes, but it provides that important structural and complexing addition. Perfumed, highly scented aromas and a palate that springs from the glass with its vibrancy and energy. Lots of red fruits, spices, roses, a touch of varietal earthiness and that final lift of raspberry-like cherry character. Terrifically appealing wine. Drink 2025-2033.

From the brilliant 2021 vintage, this is bargain city. Don’t miss it. They made 200 cases, so put a percent or two of that in your cellar. 92-year-old vines, 15% whole bunches in the fermentation, which was in 500-litre French oak puncheons and stainless steel, followed by nine months maturation.
The colour is a pleasing garnet/maroon. The nose is a delightful jumble of cherries and raspberries, with spices, florals, soft red fruits, cranberries and dried herbs. Simply beautifully fragrant. Well structured, the palate is seamless with impressive length and plenty of tannins, albeit very fine ones. A ten year proposition, longer if desired.

Established by Salvatore Pala in 1950, today, over 70 years later Mario Pala represents the third generation of the family to run this famous estate. The winery is located in Serdiana, a small town some 20km from Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia and specialises in Vermentino and Cannonau.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Fragrant lime zest and Granny Smith apple scents infused with fresh Mediterranean herbs fly out of the glass trailed by some slatey mineral and saline like notes. Crunchy lime, green apple and fresh pear fruits are delivered with impressive intensity over a back drop of Mediterranean herbs and a saline like minerality. Crisp, snappy acidity, finishing long and zesty.

In 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847. Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with green tinted edges. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromas jump out of the glass trailed by distinct chalky talc, green apple and mineral notes. Scrumptious lime and citrus fruits fill the mouth carrying with them plenty of textural volume. Crunchy acidity with orange rind, green apple, chalky talc and subtle steely mineral elements lining the back half. The finish, long and racy.

What a beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling is this estate Pewsey Vale wine. The nose is intense lemon with a minerally bath salts character, while the palate has that lemon rind edginess, balancing the deeply intense, linear and focused fruit that emerges from this high-altitude block. It retains a degree of tension with a slightly talcy character, and the finish is long and fine. Excellent wine. Drink 2025-2037.

Super stuff; we all need a bottle of this close at hand when the weather warms up. Drink by 2040.

This wine marks another debut appearance in our Best In Show selection – for Eden Valley Riesling, though we've featured Eden Valley Shiraz/Syrah here in the past. It's a young wine and light on its feet (just 11.5%). Riesling here manages, remarkably enough, to deliver full-season fruit complexities at this strength since phenolic ripeness continues, in the High Eden's skeletal soils, even after sugar ripeness has slowed, including in very warm vintages like that of 2025. It's an enticingly aromatic wine with a tumble of blossom blowing about an aromatic core of zesty lemon, lime, fresh dessert apple and early season nectarine. On the palate, the wine is bright and tangy with racy apple and rhubarb acidity; it has ample mid-palate wealth and poised texture, then the blossoms come blowing back to lift its brisk, mouth-freshening finish. Its Eden Valley pedigree suggests that this beautifully vinified wine will age well, too.

'Suze' was created in 1889, at the Rousseau, Laurens and Moureaux distillery in the outskirts of Paris. To differentiate his product from the many wine based aperitifs of the day, Fernand Moureaux decided to create an aperitif from the Gentian plant, a yellow Alpine flower with massive roots that dig deeply into the flanks of mountains. It is these same roots that are used to prepare the base material of the liqueur.
Legend has it that Moureaux bought the formula from an old distiller in the Canton de Bern on the Swiss Jura Mountains where Gentian thrives, and where the river Suze flows. Here, Hans Kappeler had been selling "Or des Alpes" to the locals for years as a remedial tonic. Late in his life, sick and almost financially ruined, Kappeler may well have taken the opportunity to sell his creation to the French negociant. The story goes he convinced Moureaux that one day his liqueur "would flow in France like the Suze", in reference to the river passing through the village.
A more prosaic version has it that the aperitif was named after Fernand Moureaux's sister in law, Suzanne Jaspart, who enjoyed the drink during sessions of tennis. Regardless, Suze became a sensation due to its original flavour. A testament to its popularity is the plethora of advertising material that was produced around the brand by illustrious artists including Pablo Picasso, and the nickname it received from fans - "The Yellow Fairy!"
In the present day production of Suze, wild Gentian is still sourced from Jura, but also from Auvergne where other famous brands of Gentian liqueur are still produced. The modern-day Suze is much sweeter than the original recipe, but still includes all of the aromatic plants in its formula, though exactly which remains closely guarded.
The gentle alliance of sweetness and bitterness is the trademark of this aperitif, which continues to be the biggest selling in its category. It also makes it hugely versatile:
- Try it neat or on the rocks: Traditionally enjoyed chilled as a pre-dinner drink. Pour it over a single ice cube, let it dilute slightly to cut the sweetness, and enjoy as the French do.
- Suze Tonic: Mix 1 part Suze with 3 parts premium tonic water over ice, and garnish with a twist of lemon. The quinine accentuates the herbal, medicinal notes of the gentian root, making it a fantastic low-alcohol alternative to a standard Gin & Tonic.
- In a White Negroni: Substitute Campari with Suze in a classic Negroni (mix with gin and dry vermouth) for a lighter, more herbal, and floral cocktail.
- Suze Spritz: Combine 50ml of dry white wine or sparkling wine, 50ml of Suze, and 25ml of soda water over ice with a lemon slice
- With Citrus: Serve it over ice with a lemon or orange twist to highlight its bright, citric notes.
