963 Red Label "Rich & Sweet" Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Sasanokawa Shuzo (also behind the Yamazakura whiskies) has created a charming malt and grain blend here. Located in Koriyama, Fukushima prefecture, the company has been producing whisky since 1946, however their history is in sake and shochu which they've made since the late 1700s. The provenance of the liquid is not disclosed, however in true Japanese style, the producers say the flavour is aimed at "delightful surprise".

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Unlike Shuzo's Black Label, this is unpeated, with some of the liquid coming finished in sherry casks. Shy opening scents develop to attractive fruity, dried pear and apple over light vanilla. Medium weight with a decent injection of malt and spice through the mid palate. Hints of dried fruits, with warming spices adding zest to the finish. Seems more complex and substantial than its smokey sibling. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Adelphi The Winter Queen 9 Year Old Fusion Cask Strength Whisky (700ml)
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52.7%
    "A true Sherry bomb".

The first edition 'Winter Queen' is another Adelphi Fusion, following on from the Glover, Kincardine and The E&K bottlings – each being a marriage of either Scotch and Japanese whisky or Scotch and Indian whisky. This time, Dutch single malt enters the mix. The Scottish contribution comes from one American oak ex bourbon barrel from Longmorn and a couple of liters of Glenrothes from an ex sherry butt, blended with two ex Oloroso sherry hogsheads from Millstone (Zuidam distillery) Baarle Nassau, in the Netherlands, a producer famous for sherried styles.

Described as “a true sherry bomb”, it's another fitting tribute whisky to a great Scot: The label references Elizabeth Stuart, born in Falkland Palace in Fife in 1596, the eldest daughter of King James VI of Scotland. After a brief reign as Queen of Bohemia, Elizabeth spent most of her life in The Hague. In the face of war and exile, her shrewd diplomacy, tenacity and humour saw her political and cultural influence extend across Europe. Bottled at natural cask strength, non chill filtered and with no added colour, the Winter Queen was limited to 866 bottles world wide. Extremely limited.

Notes from Adelphi... Nose: drying with chocolade and desiccated coconut, Scotch pancakes with bacon coated in maple syrup, polished floorboards, Manilla envelopes and dark toffee. Palate: crème caramel, Maraschino cherries, rhubarb crumble and molasses with roast meat jus in the development. Finish: soft and creamy with all the hallmarks of a good Sunday lunch including the rowan and quince jelly. 52.7% Alc./Vol.

    A Scotch-Dutch fusion collector's edition.

A very ambitious blending exercise, considerably older than the first edition Winter Queen, the composition here takes a different trajectory: part of a refill ex-sherry butt from Mortlach, part of a refill ex-sherry butt from Bowmore, part of an ex-sherry butt from an undisclosed Highland distillery, part of two refill ex-bourbon hogsheads distilled at Teaninich combined with a Dutch component - part of a first fill ex-PX sherry hogshead distilled at Zuidam Distillery, Baarle-Nassau, in the Netherlands. The latter is the youngest whisky in the Fusion. All of the Scotch single malts are more than thirty years of age. Limited to 400 bottles world wide. Extremely limited allocation.

Notes from Adelphi... Colour: mahogany in colour, with amber lights. Nose: slightly nose drying, with blueberry compote, saddle soap and a dusting of coffee powder. Maritime notes also start to become apparent (moss and driftwood). Palate: to taste, Parma Violets with highland toffee and touch of smoke creeping through. Finish: a long finish with hints of dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee in abundance. 54.5% Alc./Vol.
2016 Akashi 4 Year Old Single Cask No.61966 "Ghost Series No.15" Cask Strength Single Malt Japanese Whisky (500ml)
    Akashi, JAPAN
    $2499. 00
    Bottle
    $29988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.5%

A now very rare item that sold out in under ten minutes on release. Selected by Japanese whisky godfather, Stefan van Eycken with Hideo Yamaoka as part of their 'Ghost Series', edition #15 is a 4-year old Akashi, made from single malts matured in sherry and bourbon barrels which were then vatted in a single port cask for one year. With only 849 bottles produced, it will be on collector's radars. Beautiful presentation. 61.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Highly sweet but it's a tad dreary. Prunes, dried leaves, and tiny bit of spiciness. I guess they call them dark fruits for a reason. Digging deeper, there's that sweet potato tanginess if you look for it. Palate: Deep, dark sherry that stuck around after last call. Water brings out dark chocolate. Finish: Great tannins and nuttiness, A slight tinge of bitterness alongside mint and cinnamon. Shochu sticks around. Another wonderful entry in the Ghost series. Tawny means "orange-brown or yellowish-brown colour." Yes I had to look the word up. That definition matches this profile quite well: the sherry here shows through but it's taken on a slightly darker, more ominous role. Japanese whisky gets its share of fortified wine cask aging, but this character certainly isn't found anywhere else. Perhaps that's the shochu speaking? - nomunication.jp

White Oak Akashi Meisei Japanese Blended Whisky (500ml)
    JAPAN
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
"Meïsei" translates as 'celebrity' in Japanese. Reports have it that this whisky was made with 45% American oak matured single malt and was released exclusively for the French market.

Other reviews... Spicy and savory with dark soy sauce, the blackened bark of a hunk of roasted meat, peppercorn, fennel, and faint lemon zest. Lemon meringue pie and tangerine flavors; quite sweet, with lovely flowing spices throughout, and a few green notes, but when the creamy fudge comes in, the ride is over. Compared with the standard blend, this has greater balance, benefiting from the absence of the more abrasive spices and herbal aromas. Abrupt finish, leaving a hollow spiciness behind.

    JAPAN
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55%

The super limited Akkeshi Boshu peated represents the third release and the ninth season in the distillery's series of 24 Sekki, Japan's distinctive cycle of seasons in which solar terms represent the seasons dividing the year into twenty four equal parts, such as the beginning of Spring and the Summer solstice.  'Boshu' or "Sowing Of The Grain" marks a time of the year when grains mature and when fireflies appear, as depicted on the label. Bottled at 55% after three years of ageing, the smoke here is described as being of a campfire quality, with additional chocolate and fruit notes. Approximately 9000 bottles are on offer worldwide.

World Malt Edition whiskies explore their unique blend from 4 different types of cask maturation or finishing. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 from this series are based on No. 1.

Edition No. 2 is finished in a red wine cask. Showcasing the change in fruit character this process can bring, expect to get much more red fruit influence while still retaining a mild malt driven astringency and citrus peel freshness.

In early 2014, peated malt was so scarce it was well-nigh impossible to procure it. In this situation, Amrut's Chairman, Shri Neelakanta Rao R. Jagdale, made a bold move to smoke-dry his own barley with peat sourced from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This is the result. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I would not know when this little sister of the Greedy Angels 12 yo was bottled, even if they were having it at The Whisky Show in London this year, while I had never seen it before. But remember, no proven data means no data. We should tell a few politicians, don't you agree? Colour: full gold. Nose: some fruity smoke, unless that would be some smoky fruits. It's very unusual, much unlike those old peaters that were wonderfully fruity as well (Bowmore, Laphroaig). Think a blend of lapsang souchong with green earl grey, plus half a glass of the trademark mango juice. Very curious about what water will do to it… With water: rather sour fruits, citrus, yuzu again… The smoke is becoming more furtive.  Mouth (neat): barbecued marshmallows and, indeed, that blend of lapsang souchong with green earl grey tea. Or a smoky daiquiri on steroids. With water: very good, despite a peat that sometimes feels slightly out of place, as it does in several 'new' smoked Speysiders, for example. But I'm really nit-picking once more new, it's a lovely dram. Finish: long, more on custard and masked pumpkin. The mango-y smoke returns in the aftertaste, together with some green tea and sesame oil. Comments: almost talking in morse code, with a peat that goes on and off and on and off. Unusual, fun and very good. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Amrut Fusion XI Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)

    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

A tribute to Amrut's late Chairman, Neelakanta Rao Jagdale, celebrating the eleventh Anniversary of the iconic 'Amrut Fusion'. This is a one-of-a-kind expression being a combination of their 12-year-old, 10-year-old, 9-year-old and 7-year-old single malt whiskies. Matured in a port pipe and ex-bourbon casks, it's limited to 1000 bottles worldwide. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [10th anniversary edition tasted] A deeply intense whisky, with prunes, molasses, black grape, peppercorn, black mustard seed, and allspice notes, then a waft of burnt heather twigs. The palate is a dense concoction of brown sugar, stewed fruit, pepper, oxidized apple peels, bramble, oak tannins, clove, and hints of savory juices. Water tames the tannins, flushing out a softer, fruiter side, but this sophisticated profile is still quite an acquired taste. Peat and Port work well together at Amrut, so it's no surprise that La Maison du Whiskey have bottled several iterations. This was part of the 2020 Creation Catalog dedicated to the Bangalore distillery. The whisky finds its unity of tone thanks to a subtle but incessant back and forth between peaty, fruity, animal, exotic, medicinal, spicy and ashy notes. According to the bottlers, the attack on the palate is particularly exotic with pineapple and intense peat, while the aftertaste is reminiscent of a chimney fire. Filled in 2014, cask #2713 was a run of 516 bottles in August 2020, specially commissioned by the French retailer. We have secured a small quantity. 60% Alc./Vol. It's not stated on the label, but it's safe to assume this was not chill filtered.

A relatively new release for Amrut, made with Punjabi malted barley and aged in ex-Bourbon casks.

Other reviews... A distinctly Speyside-style malt focussing on gentleness of touch and light caramels. As is the present Amrut style, the finish is a little feeble and bitter. But there is much to enjoy with its early grassy quality both nose and delivery. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Ian picked out something quite different - Amrut matured in a former rye whisky cask, filled back in 2011. Amrut continues to experiment, this time with Portuguese Madeira Casks; in fact, this is India’s first ever Madeira Cask Finish single malt - and by all reports the combination works brilliantly!

“Amrut had really worked their way around to make this bottling with a near perfect balance of aromas”, says ambassador, Ashok Chokalingam. “We are very delighted with this bottling and the flavours emanating out of this whisky are truly mind boggling. It is a fantastic addition to Amrut stable and yet it is distinctive. We have pretty much produced every style of whisky and pushed the boundaries on maturation techniques that are possible. A few more are now in the pipeline to complete the course” he observes.
Bottled at 50% this comes non chill filtered and naturally coloured.

Other reviews... This limited edition is quite a color: deep orange with beautiful rose tints. Quite vinous on the nose, with orange peel, crème brûlée, honey, toasted coconut, grated chocolate, and preserved lemons all benefiting from the higher bottling strength. It’s darkly sweet with piquant plums, juicy raisins, sweet shortbread, fig, chocolate, honeyed lemons, and tangy candied peel. Truly excellent, the spice dominating the dark fruits and chocolate throughout the finish. (4,800 bottles)

A bottling to celebrate the 60th birthday of Amrut's Chairman, Mr. Neel Jagdale. Amrut rarely age their whiskies for longer than four years. This represents some of the distillery's oldest stocks - a tricky undertaking given the greedy nature of India's angels where evaporation rates are around 10-15% annually, as opposed to 2% in a cooler climate such as Scotland. Apart from the dramatic loss (over 250 litres disappeared in this experiment), extended ageing means there's a risk that the spirit will breach a critical point beyond which it tastes overly woody. Produced from unpeated Indian barley & Scottish peated barley, 1350 bottles are on offer worldwide.

Tasting note: Bright amber. Resiny, shellac-like opening phase takes several minutes to blow off. Second pass finds a core of sweet barley and vanilla with fruit jam density. Third pass hints at kumquat paste, raw sugar and plantain. Saturates the mouth with a slow-motion wave of creamy malt and ripe mango. Delicate bittersweetness. The length is superb. Ends rich, satisfying, warming with flavours of cream tea biscuit and cough lozenge in the fade. Beautifully poised given its weight and ABV. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A whopping three-quarters of the spirit put in these casks was taken by greedy angels. It has a big waft of crystallized pineapple, tropical fruits, and spiky spice on the nose. On the palate, red licorice, syrupy jellied fruits, some mandarin, cherry lozenge, and tinned strawberries, and the same menthol rancio you’d kill for in a 30 year old scotch. This is Amrut's oldest-ever whisky; it's as rare as hen's teeth…and just 8 years old. Awesome.

A virgin American oak cask selected by the Australian importer, Ian McKinlay, on his last visit to the distillery. The unpeated malt was distilled in April 2010 and bottled in December 2015.

Tasting note: Eyecatching glossy mahogany colour shows considerable legs. This needs lots of air to blow off the opening varnishy notes. Five minutes finds a dramatic improvement, gaining definition with hints of candied orange peel, dates, cinnamon and thick malt. A densely packed, bittersweet attack. Mid palate surge adds a fabulous stone fruit rush: nectarine, apricot, white peach? Aftertaste is creamy, fruity, lingering with nectarine salient in the aftertaste. A summer fruit flavour extravaganza. 120 bottles available. 62.8% Alc./Vol.

    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Produced from 100% Indian malt, this whisky starts its maturation in ex-Bourbon casks in Bangalore, situated at over 3,000 feet above sea level in the heart of South India. The casks are then shipped 9,000km to a location in Scotland—allowing a further maturation in the cooler climate.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Peel heavy, mildly acidic opening whiffs. Later hints of Summer pudding. Offers flavours of cocoa, vague fruitiness and an oily finish. Beeswax, vanillan oak and warming spices carry the aftertaste. Full bodied and vivacious young malt. Non chill-filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [Second edition tasted 2011] Two Continents refers to the fact that this is matured in India and then Europe. But Amrut has tweaked the winning formula of the first edition, taking the alcoholic strength from 46% to 50% and using bourbon instead of grain casks for European maturation. The changes are immediately noticeable. The nose is honeyed, with key lime pie, and strawberries and cream. The taste is spikier, spicier, and feistier than before, with dark cherry, blood orange, and unripe banana. 88 points - www.maltadvocate.com

'Naarangi' derives its name from the Hindi word for "orange." This extraordinary release saw Amrut fill casks with Oloroso sherry and add orange peels to them. This mixture was left to season the wood for over two years. Afterwards, three year old malt whisky was put in the casks to mature for an extra three years. Intrigued? We certainly are. Very limited stocks.

Tasting note: [Bach 003 tasted] Pale amber. Thick, malty, liqueur-like aromas are sultry, semi-sweet and redolent of tangerine / mandarine peel / blood orange followed by an assortment of dried fruits. Medium bodied with a crisp, lively-malt delivery and a strong blood orange accent to the finish. Concludes cleansing, mildly oily, orange pith/peel-like and with nice length. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Amrut ingeniously flavored an oloroso cask with wine and orange peel for 3 years before finishing this highly innovative whisky in it. A warmth and richness exudes, the citrus intensity of peel and orange oils develops the longer you resist temptation. Dried fruits, apricot, heather, ripe mango, triple sec, with a slight mustiness. Syrupy, soft orange pulp with zested limes makes it quite nippy. Finish of gum and wood notes after a spicy start. Whatever you do, drink it neat.

A blend of two (relatively) old Indian whiskies from Amrut, one from ex-bourbon and one from an ex-Port pipe (the distillery typically bottles whiskies under four years of age).
Produced from Scottish Peated barley, this was distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2017. 900 bottles on offer worldwide. We have less than a handful to sell.

Tasting note: Deep amber. Intense aromas include spent candle, toffee apple, camphor and menthol. Softens after further air contact accenting mango fruitiness and vanilla. Quite a smokey number with a gentle bittersweet delivery ; oaky then creamy and warming, with vanillan oak, dark chocolate and poached pears through the aftertaste. 46% Alc./Vol.

Amrut's whiskies have come of age with more mature bottlings now hitting the market. Demand has dramatically escalated. Rare releases such as "Greedy Angels" and several other limited editions are been snapped up by collectors apace. Due to India's hot climate, the distillery loses almost half of what gets put into barrel annually, hence supply of extended age bottlings is sure to remain limited for years to come.

If you like old-fashioned Edradour, Glengoyne or heavily sherried malts of similar ilk, this Indian flavour-bomb is sure to put a smile on your face.

Another innovation from Amrut. If you've not heard about it yet, Spectrum has been talked up as "pushing the boundaries" even "History making" - in short, one of the world's most innovative takes on the spirit to date. It's an imaginative experiment in maturation that's seen Amrut's spirit aged in reconstituted barrels composed of different oaks. The 004 release was originally limited to 1800 bottles in 2017. It's closer to 6000 bottles now. That's still tiny by global standards meaning it will continue to be hard to get. Once again, it's a combined stave cask including new American Oak (char #3), new French Oak (lightly toasted), ex-Oloroso Sherry and ex-Pedro Ximenez Sherry. Due to copyright issues, the Bond-themed “004” subtitle has been covered up on the packaging this time around. We have a small allocation.

From the first sniff, our tasting revealed a sherry extravaganza, boasting all of the baking spices, fruit cake and dense malt notes that are typical of the most expressive in this genre. Combined, they give it an almost Amaro-like aroma, and while the initial entry is low-definition, Spectrum balances the equation in a finish that is impossibly wound-up, sweetly oaky and drenched in fruity sherry, exotic spices and bitter peel with an aftertaste that lasts for close to a minute. If your preference is for older Edradour, Glengoyne or even well-aged Demerara rums, this should be one of the easiest buying decisions of the year. Our 50ml sample benefited greatly from air contact, so we recommend pouring a glass and returning to it over several hours.

Mark Gillespie from www.whiskycast.com explains the original concept: "...the Indian single malt was originally matured in Amrut’s Bangalore warehouse in ex-Bourbon casks for three years. Then, in an experiment that could only be described as Frankenstinian in nature, five separate finishing casks were created at an undisclosed location in Europe from new American oak, new Spanish oak, and new French oak, along with previously used Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. Staves from each cask were then removed and replaced with staves from each of the other four casks to create five complete casks with five different types of wood in each one. The barrels were then taken to Bangalore, where the whisky was filled into them to mature for an additional three and a half years before bottling."

To quote Ingvar Ronde, Editor of Sweden's Malt Whisky Year Book, Amrut Spectrum is, “One of the most innovative whiskies I´ve tried in a long time and one of the best this year... I can´t remember when I last experienced such a complexity of flavours in one whisky and at the same time, everything was in balance. I got coffee, chocolate, tobacco, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, orange preserve, sandalwood, walnuts, pecans, stracciatella and cocoa. This is pushing boundaries and whisky making at its best and I love it!”

Other reviews... The sherry is a bit more concentrated on the nose than the 2017 release, with brighter, punchy notes of stewed dark fruits and almond paste. While its predecessor showed more sultry, damp oak and smoke, this is definitely more fruit-forward and lively with secondary notes of fresh ground clove, coffee beans, and rose oil. The palate reflects a similar contrast with a more youthful and sweet sherry character. Layers of rum raisin, berry jam, orange oil, and dark roast coffee ride atop an oily, vibrant body. A gentle warmth builds into the syrupy finish, which sees a bit of astringency as all those different oak influences battle for your last bit of attention, teasing for the next sip with notes of candied citrus and stone fruit. While I prefer the 2017 bottling, which was a bit more balanced on the sherry front, this latest release is still a worthy addition to the Spectrum lineage. - drinkhacker.com

Amrut Greedy Angels Chairman's Reserve Peated Sherry Finish 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)
    Bangalore, INDIA

    Bottle
    $15588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 60%
Amrut's latest creation is limited to just 324 bottles worldwide. The process began by casking peated new make spirit, distilled from Scottish peated barley into a first fill PX-Sherry Butt for seven years. After this period the whisky was transferred to an ex-Bourbon cask and a 100 litre refill virgin oak barrel, then aged for a further three years. Here, Amrut have followed an unusual process of moving from Sherry cask to ex-Bourbon which would normally have been done the other way around.

"The result is so gratifying, and one can witness a profile of peated whisky aged for over 30 years in the Scottish Isles", says Distillery representative Ashok Chokalingam. "This is made evident by the phenols which are absolutely soft and playing the hide and seek game while being punctuated by heavy sherry notes, and somewhat kneeled down by the impact of ex-Bourbon and virgin Oak maturation combination. The result is an essay in complexity, and one needs to really look deep down & under to appreciate the mystical complexity of this extraordinary single malt from the Amrut stable".

Presented in a beautiful crystal decanter and custom made box befitting the distinctive nature of the spirit within, each decanter comes with a certificate of provenance.

Other reviews.... This was the final Chairman’s Reserve selection by the late Neel Jagdale, the second-generation chairman of family-owned Amrut Distilleries. It spent the first seven years in an Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask before being transferred into two smaller casks – an ex-Bourbon barrel and a 100-litre virgin oak cask – for the final three years of maturation. The nose has a kiss of smoke along with notes of cherries, caramel candies, hints of white pepper and chili powder, dark fruits, and a touch of oak tannins. The taste is thick, oily, and intensely spicy with chili powder and white pepper balanced by cherry cobbler and a hint of toffee. The finish is long, oaky, and spicy. (June, 2019)

This is the first South African single grain whisky, produced in Wellington at the James Sedgwick distillery, and it's made an impressive debut, In the UK, it was awarded a Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2010 and a Silver at the International Spirits Competition before being crowned with the title of "World's Best Grain Whisky" at the World Whisky Awards. Not bad at all!

Other reviews... South Africa may be home to an increasingly impressive wine industry — and a noted brandy producer — but the country is also home to two whisky distilleries. Drayman’s in Pretoria is run by brewer Moritz Kallmeyer, while the James Sedgwick distillery in Wellington is home to Three Ships and Bain’s Cape Mountain Grain. Bain’s was created by distiller Andy Watts as a way to attract the new, female drinker. Sweet and succulent, this is like an alcohol ice cream sundae — fudge chunks, toffee, and butterscotch syrup, not to mention the ice cream, You pile on the pounds just smelling it. A lush beauty.

Tasting notes: Polished copper. Opening whiffs of marzipan and pepper. Second pass features hazelnut plus hints of new leather and mulch. Light entry follows through to a gently spiced, medium bodied delivery; crisp malt gives way to sweeter, richer flavours of hazelnut and vanilla. Finishes keenly balanced and fresh with hazelnut, cocoa and hints of orange zest in the aftertaste. Some definite Toblerone moments here. Fascinating. 43% Alc./vol.

Given their long history if distilling, cooperage and fine food and wine it's surprising that the French have taken to whisky so late. Master Distiller Jean-Marc Daucourt spent considerable time in Scotland before establishing his own venture near the Cognac region in south-west France. Sourcing both barley and wheat from the north east of the country, he uses alembic pot stills (normally reserved for making brandy). The whiskies are aged for five to seven years in a combination of French Limousin oak, cherry wood and acacia casks.

Tasting note: Alsace whisky has recently been afforded an official AOC and many consider it the country's best region for the spirit. 'Uberach' is a new release from Jean Metzger whose been producing whisky at the Bertrand distillery for more than a decade. Brass gold in colour, it has a spicy fruit cake lift plus an odd earthy, herbal quality on the nose which is hard to classify. Full bodied, slightly rustic and chewy in the mouth, there's a plummy, musty, grapey, glace cherry character that reminds you of good aged grappa or Eaux de vie. Medium long, sweetening towards the finish, it's the single malt equivalent of abstract art: Difficult to pin down, yet curiously likeable at the same time. 42.2% Alc./Vol.

Bimber's foray into sourced whiskies sees twelve year old Highland and Speyside malts matured and blended in spice-forward Bimber x-Bourbon casks. Tasted from a 15ml sample, as you'd find in many a Speysider, the opening sniffs include fresh cut oak, before moving into malty gear with gorgeous, ripe aromas of poached pears, apple tart, tea biscuits and vanilla wafer. It sounds a bit pedestrian in terms of flavour descriptors, but compensates in a superbly textural delivery with an almost fresh orchard fruit crunch and crispness, backed up by sweet wood notes and furry tannins. The fruit / malt / spice interplay is skilfully harmonised, but it's that special something to the mouthfeel that makes this more than an everyday drinker and more of a quiet treasure. Bottled without chill-filtration in a striking, custom bottle which features a tactile glass fashioned to imitate the surfaces of Bimber’s small copper pot stills. 46.3% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Spiced pears and oven-baked apricot flans are sweetened by candy necklaces and scented with rosewater, nutmeg and powdered ginger. Palate: Syrupy orchard and stone fruits provide a bright and fresh mouthfeel supported by lightly charred oak, gentle white pepper and cooling mint. Finish: Lingering ripe and sweet fruits alongside sympathetic, aromatic oak.

The English Whisky front continues to expand with London-based Bimber. Their first casks were laid down in 2016 and an inaugural single malt followed three years later in September of 2019. This project definitely fulfills the category of a 'craft' operation with 100% of the barley sourced from a single farm, traditionally floor malted, hand-mashed and slow-fermented for seven days in wooden washbacks. Direct fire copper stills and an in-house cooperage complete the picture. Distiller, Dariusz Plazewski’s policy of small-batch and single-cask releases has quickly built a loyal following.

Batch 2 in the Bourbon matured series is an outturn of approximately 2200 bottles at natural strength. Comes non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [Batch 1 tasted] Colour: pale gold. Nose: what’s immediately, glaringly apparent, is that this is a distillate influenced more equitably by its fermentation rather than just by its malt and its wood. You have this initial hit of bubblegum, then some rather bright and shiny green fruits. There’s also a similar richness and natural quality to the cereal components as we saw in the Cotswolds, but here it sits alongside these bolder and more assertive fruity aspects. Citrus peels, wee fizzy esters and eventually more vanilla from the American oak emerging. With water: spices, orchard fruits, gooseberry, kiwi and some softer things like sandalwood and fabric. I even get a wee impression of chalkiness. Mouth: here you feel the oak a little more directly at first. Quite a lot of green and pink peppercorns, rye breads, nutmeg, ginger and turmeric. All hyper clean and in some ways more towards what we might think of as as ‘world whisky’ profile (terminology that’s increasingly loosing meaning in my view). With water: indeed, rather grippy spices, a mixture of fresh and bitter herbs, lime, sorrel, peppery watercress and some pretty classical vanilla sponge cake. Finish: good length, a nicely bitter, peppery, lightly herbal and even showing some notes of ointment and witchhazel. Comments: Extremely impressive stuff. The oak bites ever so slightly for me but this is undeniably classy and very well-made young whisky. I love these herbal qualities that emerge with time and a little water. Would love to try this distillate from refill one day.

Our ruby port casks were sourced from the Duoro Valley in Portugal  – the birthplace of port, where wine has been made for over two thousand years. And they’ve become amongst our oldest, having been left to mature for an extended time – now being released at nearly five years of age."

Norway can now be added to a growing list of Northern European whisky producers. The Bivrost distillery, aka 'Aurora Spirits', creates single malt whisky, gin, aquavit, vodka and more. The name is derived from a combination of two ancient Norse words: ‘Biv’, which means ‘shaking’, and ‘rost’, which means ‘road’ or ‘path’. Combined they make the Viking word for the Northern Lights. This is a properly Norweigan product, pot distilled from Nordic barley and diluted with Elvejordvannet glacier water from the Lyngen alpine range. To further distinguish it, the whisky has been matured underground in a former NATO storage facility using carefully selected ex-Bourbon casks and then finished in 240 litre Teak casks - an extremely rare finishing that's not actually permitted in Scotland. 46% Alc./Vol. 3506 bottles are available.

Palate: Vanilla and tropical fruits, with a clear influence of cinnamon and other spices. Finish: Pleasant, spicy finish. Overall: A sweet and pleasant Whisky, very suitable as a first introduction to Whisky.

Fans of powerful, sherry matured malts will be looking forward to tasting Cotswold's latest. Throughout its relatively short history, the distillery have aged their whisky in a variety of casks made from different woods (both Spanish and American oak), in different sizes (250-litre Hogsheads and 500-litre Butts) and seasoned with different wines (dry Oloroso and sweet Pedro Ximénez). Every year they create a blend from these various cask types with the aim of delivering the ultimate sherried whisky experience. Each batch will be unique, but will always be full-term matured in sherry casks. 9900 bottles are on offer at natural strength.

Other reviews... Nose: Full on flaming Christmas cake here, the brandy has just been lit and the cake split open. Dark-skinned fruits abound, plums in port, blackcurrant jam and Medjool dates. Palate: Those fruits come through first, then treacle and sweet dates, crumpets with golden syrup and a little cinnamon spice. Finish: Slowly dried with a little cracked black pepper spice and redcurrant tang. Comment: A nice, not-quite-sherry-bomb whisky that has plenty of balance between sweetness, the wood and fruits. - Rob Allanson, whiskymag.com

"Unlikely you'll find a more perfectly balanced and complex peat cask malt than this, this year!" - Jim Murray

What started as an experiment has become the newest (and most praised) addition to Cotswolds' growing core range. Consisting of around 2900 bottles per batch, 'Peated Cask" is made using un-peated local barley; the new-make is then aged in x-peated quarter casks from Scotland (these are considerably smaller than your standard whisky cask). The Islay-soaked oak influence complements the fruity notes in the spirit without overwhelming (it's more like the phenols are softly brushed on). Awarded Best World Whisky at the International Whisky Competition 2020, it also added yet another glowing review to Cotswolds extraordinary track record from Jim Murray (see below - batch 01/2019 tasted). Note: We have considerably less to sell than the Founder's Choice, so if you're in the market for a peaty treat, be quick.

Other reviews... (Batch No. 01/2019) at first the smoke is little more than a thin shadow, or a distant echo. Slowly, however, it builds, seemingly a molecule at a time, into something more complete... delicate, so delicate.... a degree of youth prods the salivation button.... not so much a blanket of smoke, more a thin sheet. This is laid gently over the contours of the mochas-enriched tannins, gentle ulmo honey and demerara sugars. First it is a tease. And then a complete seduction. On St.George's Day an English Whisky that is unquestionably among the world's elite this year. Amazing. 59.3% Alc./Vol.

    - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

This release sees Cotswolds' creamy, fruity new-make filled into American oak STR barriques for just over three years. The Master Blender selected nine for the final cut. The inaugural batch was dedicated to industry legend, Dr. Jim Swan, who encouraged Cotswolds to shave, toast, and re-char red wine barriques. Subsequent batches have followed. The highly active casks were finally disgorged and bottled at natural cask strength, non-chill filtered and with no added colouring. Once again Jim Murray et al were impressed, with the whisky taking out "Best English Single Malt" at the WWA in 2019. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... The beauty of a whisky at this strength is that the sharpness of the wine casks is at full volume, their salivating qualities heading through the roof. The nose may be little more than a caress - but no such subtlety here as the barley gangs up into something more rich and remarkable. ... long, and after that big fruit explosion, emollient and concentrating on all the softer, more honeyed aspects of the malt. There aren’t many distilleries that could claim more auspicious beginnings than Cotswolds. Taking inspiration from Bruichladdich, this 'terroir focused' venture is a tick list for quality and attention to detail: 100% locally grown floor-malted barley, long fermentations, unusual yeast strains, innovative distillation cuts and bourbon and shave-toast-rechar red wine casks indicate a producer at the high end of the passion scale. In an effort to improve transparency, the barley variety and farm it was grown are also listed on each bottle. Commencing production in 2014, the use of ‘STR' casks has been key to early success. These vessels were designed by the late whisky consultant, Dr. Jim Swan. Readers might be familiar with his involvement with other ‘new world’ ventures, bringing quick recognition to brands such as Kavalan and Amrut.

Effortlessly elegant, and with a sensuality rarely encountered in whisky of any persuasion.

The story behind these remarkable whiskies begins and ends in Champagne.
Maison Dumangin J. Fils has been producing wines from the Montagne de Reims for well over a century. Gilles Dumangin returned to the Domain in 2000 after studying in London. A small wine merchant, not far from Harrods had introduced him to a Tain L'Hermitage finished single malt. It was love at first taste. Gilles was inspired to create his own delicately tannic 'Ratafias Champenois' (a fortified wine made with Champagne must and Champagne based spirits) using second-fill barrels from the Côtes-du-Rhône Septentrionales (x-Syrah). He now applies the same principles to single cask whiskies - this time with a Champagne twist, using the same barrels that aged his Ratafia Champenois.

The Dumangin whiskies follow in the footsteps of French pioneers like Michel Couvreur - only there's another layer of expertise bought to the table. While Gilles clearly has a 'magic touch' when it comes to selecting and maturing world class singles and grains, he isn't just a buyer and bottler. He's an acclaimed winemaker applying his know-how. Whiskies arrive in Champagne to complete their maturation in 228 litre barriques in the cellars at Chigny-les-Roses. The Ratafia finishing gives them a distinctive signature: a subtle yet delicious, creamy, fruity twist unique to Champagne.

Tasting note: Young to middle-aged Penderyns have been receiving rave reviews for some time now. This one's spent four years in a Bourbon barrel followed by 18 months in a Ratafia Champenois cask. Opening aromas of sweet oak, pecan pie and shortbread build with poached orchard fruits. Unfolds like a fine wine in a gorgeous, off-dry rush of buttery vanillas, ripe grapes, honey and dried fruits with just a hint of citrus. The malt glazes the tongue. Rebounds with sweet grape and pear, but ends with hints of something more exotic (ripe nectarine, Feijoa (?). So finely tuned, this has a cognac-like elegance and a sensuality rarely encountered in whisky of any persuasion. Superb. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 373 bottles produced.

A collaboration between East London Liqueur Co. and Sonoma Distilling Company's Adam Spiegel, this London Rye whisky has been matured in a variety of casks, including ex-peated whisky casks and Pedro Ximenez sherry. We were treated to a thimble full and the quality was certainly impressive.

Other reviews... Nose: Classic rye notes of caramel, toffee, sweet cereals, rye bread, peppercorns and baking spice. Then fresh chopped logs, and a little fruit and nut mix. Palate: Very savoury to begin, with green wood, tomato vines, bran flakes, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, conifers, and pine cones. Then some unripe lime, pomegranate and little herby thing – parsley and chive. Finish: Stays herbal and woody, with an earthy sweetness – tobacco leaves. - edinburghwhiskyblog.com

Unanimous praise as one of the great batches in the Barrel Proof series. Strictly limited to one bottle per customer.

A non chill filtered release with previous editions garnering considerable praise from Bourbon enthusiasts, including No.1 in Whisky Advocate's 2017 Top 20. This particular batch left Jim Murray impressed. In fact, it was one of the highest rating Bourbons in his 2021 Whisky Bible. Sheer chance led us to discover and import a tiny quantity for Australia. While it's not the most sophisticated Kentuckian of recent years, it is one of the most emphatic: The aroma packs a punch with a straight-from-the-barrel whiff of nose prickling, penetrating alcohol; Shellac develops into vanilla bean and fresh sawn oak with cinnamon and toasted coconut in support. The entry is creamy, vanilla-heavy; mid palate is dense and chewy, though surprisingly approachable until the atomic ABV explodes in a mouth-coating, mouth-tingling wave of oaky sugars and booming spices. Layers of orange zest, cocoa, caramel and vanilla are left in the wake. Whew! If you're looking for a whiskey to separate the men from the boys, this is your bottle. Batch A119. 67.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... When you get this degree of toastiness from a Bourbon, either there has been one hell of an average temperature rise in Kentucky. Or this has been plucked from near the top of a warehouse where it has been cooking happily for over a decade. The result is a Bourbon that takes no prisoners. It is also a fascinating bourbon, not just because of the intensity of the blood oranges on the nose or the prickle of the splinters on the palate. But it is because it shows an inordinate degree of copper in the flavour profile, the mid-point to the finish in particular. It is as though something was just done to the still, maybe some repair work, just prior to this being distilled. And that to the blindingly busy small grain input and the result is a bourbon of cor blimey richness!

[previous batch] As bourbon matures in new charred oak barrels over time, it approaches a perilous point when the oak dominates the flavor. To sip Elijah Craig at 12 years of age—at full barrel proof, without dilution or filtering—is to taste bourbon at its apex, so dangerously close to going over the crest of the hill, yet delivering a massive mouthful of incredibly robust flavors that drape leathery oak over a gooey caramel core, sprinkled with baking spice, while candied nuts and tobacco leaf notes appear on a drying finish dusted with cocoa. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

[previous batch] A top tier barrel proof bourbon that deserves to be experienced. If Heaven Hill can ever catch up with demand on this one and make it more readily available, watch out. It could send shock waves through the barrel proof bourbon market. - breakingbourbon.com

One of the crowd favourites at the distillery. Primary maturation in ex-bourbon casks has softened the mouth feel and allowed Filey Bay's signature flavour profile to shine, while a finishing in Shaved Toasted and Re-charred (STR) ex-red wine casks has added a wonderful deep colour and hints of red fruits. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Light, floral and fruity with flavours of red fruits, vanilla ice cream and toasted oak.

With two Forsyths pot stills and a four-plate copper column, the Spirit of Yorkshire distillery have plenty of options when it comes to nailing a house style. This example falls into the experimental category, however it's now sold out at the distillery, so we can assume the experiment was a success! While sherries like Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso are well known in single malt whisky maturation, Moscatel is much more unusual. The varietal is known for its floral aromas (orange blossom, jasmine and honeysuckle) as well as citric notes like lime and grapefruit. The Yorkshire team initially matured this expression in 200 litre bourbon casks (filled in 2016), before transferring it to 250 litre Hogshead barrels that previously held Spanish Moscatel. The result is summed up as a really interesting, flavourful whisky - light and soft but with layers of tropical fruit and sweet spice. You can also expect notes of honeycomb, orange marmalade, dried fruits and cocoa. Very limited stocks from an outturn of 6000 bottles. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery has been in operation since May 2016 and is a first for the district. The team has already received rave reviews for multiple expressions, in particular its first and second releases, now superseded by the ‘Flagship’. Rated 95 and 93 points respectively, Jim Murray commented of the inaugural bottling, “I have to say that the first thing that flashed through my mind on tasting my first mouthful was: Glenfiddich!… I’m talking about the classic non-age statement version, for years its trademark brand, that was sadly lost a great many years ago to make way for the 12 year old. When you taste this, you’ll see why. It is the sheer elan, the fabulous brightness of the whisky that both wins your heart and takes you back the best part of a couple of decades, youthful, fun and stunningly well made…” Expect something similar in this latest batch. Also on offer is a Moscatel finish, rare for whisky maturation (94.5 points) and an STR matured malt bearing the influence of industry legend, Dr Jim Swan (he helped with the Filey Bay startup a year before he died. It partly explains why these whiskies are so good.). Unfortunately this shipment was too small to permit us opening any of them to taste. Be the first!

Other reviews... [First release tasted] Fresh and massively satisfying... 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

[Second release tasted] An encouraging step toward their flagship single malt, this lemon-pale dram evokes aromas of lemon, herb gardens, clotted cream, marshmallow, and a little vanilla. It’s sweet as candy, with flavors of sugared almonds, Sweethearts, butter icing, candied lemon peel, pancakes, and a finish of peppery arugula leaves. (6,000 bottles)  88 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2020

[Second release tasted]... It’s the first time I’m trying this make. Apparently, it is a combination of pot and column spirits, so a self-blend or a single blend if you like, although it’s labelled as a single malt. Not too sure what the rules are in Boris Country, or are you allowed to call it a single malt if your column(s) does not rectify much? Just speculating, let’s try this baby… Colour: white wine. Nose: light and rather gracious, on pears, vanilla, melons, acacia honey and fresh maple syrup. I am not getting any graininess I have to say, and for sure no varnish, would love to have a look at their column. Mouth: indeed, it is sweet, fruity and easy, with bonbons, preserved pears and peaches, pineapple, and a little barley water. Shall we say we’re finding an Irish side to it? Finish: medium, fresh, easy, leaving your mouth as fresh as a baby’s. Comments: rather the opposite of the previous German drop, but I find it just as good. The high quaffability is a plus. 82 points - whiskyfun.com
