Despite recent price increases, the consensus is that this is about as good as it gets for a standard distillery release. We're not alone in noting how wonderfully complex it is for a ten year old. Prolific whisky writer, Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com rates it as one of his desert island malts. Its style is summed up by Ingvar Ronde, the editor of the Malt Whisky Yearbook as "fresh & briny on the nose, with citrus fruit, oak and barley, plus a note of damp earth, then sweet on the palate, with developing brine, nuttiness, vanilla toffee, coconut oil and drying peat." Every sip makes you understand why Springbank is special. Bourbon casks are primarily used, allowing the distillery character to shine through. Sherry casks are also employed for added body. The ratio usually falls around 60% / 40%, but that can vary between releases. It's this whisky that continues to set the bar for everything else Springbank make - and it does so with aplomb. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [+/- 2024 bottling] Colour: white wine. Nose: I get the impression that SB 10 is becoming increasingly earthy, dirty, laden with soot, basalt, oyster shells, slightly rancid olive oil, mustard, slags, and various yeasts—everything we love, though it’s perhaps not quite to your new neighbour’s taste, just to be clear. SB 10 will never replace a good, easy Champagne blanc de blancs (not entirely sure about that last remark, S.). Mouth: austere, intensely saline, peppery, even dirtier on the palate, with striking bitterness and that unmistakable oily texture. Grilled aubergines come close, before lemon peel and a generous glass of fino sherry ride to the rescue. And it’s not the first time one gets the impression they’ve poured a bit of Longrow into the vatting tank. Finish: long, with that wonderfully discordant sensation of an oily yet razor-sharp malt. The aftertaste is saline, peppery, mezcal-like, and lemony. Comments: perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after. Go figure; we, of course, adore it, as ever.

    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.2%

Confident, assertive and ballsy is how Springbank at natural strength has been described. The 25th release sees 70% matured in bourbon barrels and 30% drawn from sherry casks. Big and wild as only Springbank can be, you can expect notes of sherried prunes, almonds and brown sugar with lighter notes of vanilla and apples intermingled with industrial smokiness. A whisky that develops well in the glass... 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... "...very typical Springbank bottling with lots of funky notes combined with a maritime edge and a whiff of smoke. This being a very typical Springbank also means it’s very typically awesome. Highly recommended stuff..." - maltfascination.com

15,000 bottles make up the 2022 addition to one of our all-time favourite series of contemporary Springbanks. Produced from Belgravia barley harvested from Glencraig's Farm near Campbeltown, the resulting spirit was matured in a mix of 55% Sherry, 35% Bourbon and 10% x-Rum barrels giving it a markedly deeper colour than many previous Local Barley bottlings. Considering the reputation for high quality and the very limited nature of this series, we don't expect any of the LBs to be easily re-stocked in the future. 55.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... I find it very smart that they would keep using the old livery (while it's not the oldest for the LBs). This one was distilled from Belgravia barley from Glencraigs Farm, right on the road to Campbeltown. Colour: white wine. Nose: something else, really, this is almost a blend of mezcal, aquavit and genever, even if seawater and pure lemon juice would then chime in. In the end, it is pure oyster juice, with some tabasco and Worcester sauce, plus a good glass of zero-dosage champagne. With water: once again, more mud, rainwater and porridge, with a touch of curry this time, poppadums, Mouth (neat): but where does this mezcal stem from? More bone-dry champagne too, more aquavit, more oyster water, more lemon and lime juices. It's also fat and oily, and certainly not as 'dirty' as your usual Springbanks (which, granted, I love too). With water: some curry again, aniseed, capsicum, bell pepper… I would suppose that's the oak, not the Belgravia barley. It's different, vive la difference, I like it. Finish: long, with salty lemons ruing it all and much more smoke in the aftertaste. Comments: I just tried 2017's 11 yo Local Barley again, I find this newer expression of an eleven largely superior, but I wouldn't say it's better, stricto sensu, than the astounding 2007 from Cadenhead's. 91 points - whiskyfun.com

Hard to believe we were able to source this time capsule, bottled in 2005 before the new style labelling was applied to the 10 year old and presentation boxes were still used. It's during this era that the ten year old gradually got peatier and more peppery (and better!), a trend that continued for many years, cementing its reputation as one of the most characterful tenners on the market. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Why Springbank is One of the World’s Great Distilleries.
(And why you should know about it.)

Collectors note: Unlike previous editions, this version was released without the original box. This is Springbank's contribution to saving the environment. There are distilleries in Scotland that inspire a sense of reverence due to their singular commitment from generation to generation. No fads, no computers, no fancy technology. ‘Traditional’ is a word that comes to mind, but its present day connotations with hackneyed Scotch Whisky marketing hype do this particular distillery an injustice.

Last year a visitor to Springbank described the experience as “...stepping into a Victorian distilling textbook”. You could think of it like a monastery or Amish farm house. We've met many seasoned whisky lovers who don't know about Springbank, but then, it doesn’t follow industry fashions or court publicity. There are good reasons why this is presently one of the most interesting distilleries happening in the world of Scotch whisky today. Springbank is small - in fact, one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. They’re also family owned. Both factors making Springbank inherently flexible. Small batches and experimental runs are their stock and trade. More importantly, they maintain complete control of the production process - from their own water source, to the floor maltings, through to a seventy hour fermentation which is one of the slowest in the industry.

At the heart of Springbank’s mostly superlative output is an artisanal distilling technique. They operate a form of ‘partial triple distillation’, that is, everything is distilled two and a half times instead of twice - the latter being standard for Scotch Whisky. The wash still is fired from the bottom by live flame (also very rare). It takes attention and skill to manage charges like this. Mess it up and you get undesirable burnt flavours. Get it right and you can introduce some interesting toasty grain characteristics to the whisky as parts of the mash fall on 'hot spots' and are gently ‘roasted’ on the base of the still. While the technique has always been highly regarded by the Scots it's rarely applied mainly for reasons of efficiency. When other distilleries switched from direct flame heating to solely steam coil heating in the 1960s, 70s and 80s many managers reported a change in the character of their spirit, and rarely for the better. To prevent solids within the wash burning at the bottom of the still, it’s fitted on the inside with copper chains, called rummagers, which rotate on an arm. The method of continuously scraping solids including yeast and barley has always been considered an important factor in the whisky's eventual flavour. It goes without saying that chill filtration and artificial colouring are no where to be seen here.

In his recent book, “101 Whiskies to Try before You Die”, Ian Buxton describes Springbank's 10 Year Old as “Arguably the most traditional Scotch Whisky...a must have whisky if ever there was one”. In fact, most of what’s been released from Springbank since the early 1990s could be classified as good to great. The beautiful thing about this company is that there’s always something else on the horizon. From triple distilled, to heavily peated and cask strength expressions, to wood finished whiskies, the latter of which Springbank are the modern day masters of. Their whiskies also have a reputation for holding age extremely well (if you want a clear cut example of this, seek out ‘Campbeltown Loch’ on this website - a dramatically under valued 30 Year Old blend with the vibrancy of a something half its age).

For the history buffs, Springbank’s location is also worth mention. Campbeltown was home to a big fishing fleet, and no less than 37 distilleries during the 19th century. Following the Excise Act of 1823 taxes were reduced to such an extent that legal distilling at last became competitive against smuggling. This really was the beginning of the golden years for Campbeltown distillers, who hastily began applying for licences. Subsequently Campbeltown became an epicentre for malt whisky, earning it the nickname 'Whisky Capital of the World.' Levels of production were so high that it was inevitable the bubble would burst. The early part of the 20th century saw changes which had a detrimental effect on the Campbeltown whisky trade. Overconfident in their Glasgow monopoly, some Campbeltown distillers became complacent, putting the emphasis on quantity, not quality, which led to the production of inferior spirit. This, coupled with a post-war economic depression and prohibition in the United States took its toll and by 1930 only three distilleries survived. ‘Rieclachan’ closed in 1934, leaving only Springbank and Glen Scotia. Springbank since opened a sister distillery, Glengyle, which is sold under the ‘Kilkerran’ label. You’ll also find it on this website.

Whilst bourbon casks are mainly used for maturation of Springbank malts, allowing the distillery character to shine through, a number of sherry casks are also used for added body.

Tasting note: Bright gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet toasty grains, potpourri and lanolin scented peat. Some fresh citrus peel notes emerge with time in the glass. The palate is very soft on entry, building with good length and excellent concentration. Spice, shortbread and salty peat flavours are delivered with a slightly oily, warming mouthfeeel. A touch of butterscotch is followed by a spicy, peaty, peppermint and salt aftertaste. It's this whisky that must set the bar for everything else Springbank make - and it does so with aplomb. We can't name another ten year old offering as much substance and complexity for the price. Highly recommended.  46% Alc./Vol.

2003 Springbank 15 Year Old Rum Wood Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $850. 00
    Bottle
    $10200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51%

Around 9000 bottles of this unusual , full term rum matured Springbank were released. As always, European markets quickly sold out. Deep gold. Sweetish on the nose but with the coastal sprightliness retained. Subtle hints of banana cake and unripe pineapple could be auto-suggestion, but the peppery / wood smoke lift is undeniable. A little menthol rub and brine add freshness. Intense and vivacious with early rum sugars followed by a grassy / peppery attack, laced with sooty peat, sweetening at the finish with a flash of fruitiness. The final stages turn peppery, lightly grassy, drying with a touch of cool mint and late peat. Complexity is a strong point. 51% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Demerara sugar, dark chocolate, Christmas cake, almonds, toffee, oak. Palate: Creamy, raisins, dark chocolate, figs, marzipan, brazil nuts and vanilla. Finish: Oak and sherry notes sustain and mingle with hints of leather.

    Tasting note:
Superb purity in the brilliant, glossy topaz colour. Dazzles in the glass. First nosings find shellac and warm, vapoury alcohol that quickly dissipates revealing sweet sooty malt; develops with aromas of brine, sawn pine, orange zest, toasted marshmallow, vanilla bean and chocolate box. Cask strength but you wouldn’t know it judging from the delivery which is only moderately spirity, bittersweet and initially peel-like with the smokey sweetness accentuating. It all happens towards the finish with a sensational surge of spice, toasty vanilla oak, earthy peat and Jonathan apple(?), while there’s suggestions of cured meats and dried fruits later in the aftertaste. Typically multifaceted Springbank. Hard to pin down and partly why we love it so much. The flavours blur into one another and just keep on giving. Must try. 54.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Strathearn Inaugural Bottling Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Strathearn is one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries, located in Highland Perthshire, an area with a rich distilling heritage owing to its freshwater lochs. Prioritising flavour over alcohol yield, it is also reported to be the only distillery to use Maris Otter barley resulting in a deliciously creamy new-make. Maturation takes place in first-fill ex-bourbon, wine, port and sherry casks. Since independent bottler, Douglas Laing acquired the operation in 2019 there have been several prototype releases, however this bottling is considered the first representation of an official house style and comes presented in new livery. Offered at 50% without colouring or chill-filtration, we noted aromas and flavours similar to hay bails, Ovaltine and toasted cereals followed by hints of beeswax and sweet tobacco in a mouth-warming setting. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... From a combination of virgin, bourbon and sherry casks, around 7 years old on average. Perthshire's quasi-pocket distillery Strathearn now belongs to Douglas Laing. We've already tried two or three indie youngsters, they were good. Colour: light gold. Nose: bread and pastry dough plus candied fruits. Simply perfect. Right, that was a bit short, so say panettone, sourdough bread, rhubarb juice and bamboo shoots. How does that sound? With water: fresh brioche straight from the baker's. Lovely breakfast. Also a closed pack of cigarettes (how about Gold Leaf?) Mouth (neat): mango, beeswax, more rhubarb, golden syrup, pancake sauce, green tea (Gunpowder) and pink grapefruit. Great idea to have waited quite bit longer before releasing a first official, well, release. With water: water pulls out sweet roots. Gentian, carrots, all complex flavours that are highly desirable in my book. Finish: long, rather more on milk chocolate and some slightly gingered orange juice. Touch of fresh turmeric in the aftertaste. Comments: awesomely complex at this age. TBH we visited the distillery while it had just been built and the tiny gear had been a little, let's say, frightening. Mea culpa, much impressed today. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers... Anticipate a rich Malted barley depth with gentle oak on the nose. Palate: The mouth-coating, syrupy palate brings honey and buttercream with baking spice and dried apricots. Finish: The warming finish is long with home baking and buttery oak biscuits.

    ABV: 52.4%

A distillery unknown to most, with the majority of its produce destined for blends.
This is the first time Strathmill has been included as part of Diageo's limited release "Special Series". 2700 bottles are on offer.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold with water like edges. A delightful bouquet of fresh-baked sponge cake, barley sugar and lucerne mulch. Second pass adds hints of raisins, cough drops and later scents of stewed pear. Proper concentration, but the heat is well controlled; deliciously juicy / fruity creamy entry. Finish ups the spices and adds vanilla, pepper and hints of citrus. Concludes lively, woody, drying and medium long. 59.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Light gold. Fresh and lightly nutty/biscuity combined with a gently swelling aroma of fruit syrups, green grape, lime (or green) jelly babies, and Quetsch, with that nut flour underneath. The palate is similarly smooth, creamy, and upfront, with a decidedly acidic zing to the finish before the wood finally shows its presence. A soft, delicious whisky that ticks all the right boxes but doesn’t really set the world alight. (2,700 bottles) 84 points
    - www.maltadvocate.com (Winter 2014), Dave Broom

Strathmill eventuated in the whisky boom of the late 19th century, where almost thirty malt whisky distilleries were founded (some familiar names include, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, Aberfeldy and Glen Moray). It commenced as a Flour and Corn mill factory in 1823 which was converted under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet. In 1895 the gin producers W. & A. Gilbey bought the distillery and changed the name to Strathmill ('the mill in the long valley'), which today falls under the Diageo umbrella.

Today, the malt supplies blends like J&B with very few single malts surfacing. Independent bottlers are the main source for malt fans to sample its delights, which have been referred to by the likes of whisky writer Michael Jackson as "the whisky's answer to orange Muscat". More recently, various bottlings of Strathmill have received ratings as high as 96 points by Jim Murray.

    Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND
    $99. 99

Talisker 10YO super buy! Includes a bonus Talisker branded mug to take camping.

'The lava of the Cuillins' - that's how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster: the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, it achieved a unique style. In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now-immortal Macallan. Talisker has continued strong since under the ownership of Diageo. An individual malt that remains an island classic, Talisker invariably offers a great sniff. At ten years old, the aromas are pungent-yet-fresh with Islay-like seaweedy smokiness and sweet fruity malt. There's a bold maritime influence on the palate too, perfectly complemented by a spicy, very peppery lingering finish. A little honey threads its way through the beautifully balanced spirit. Not harsh but warming. Always satisfying to re-discover this West Highland gem. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

A quite stupendous malt to be enjoyed at any time. But especially at night. - 93 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker’s smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. When young there are notes of the land: heather, moor, sweet seaweed, and a finish that has a distinctive cracked black pepper hit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2012)

Nose: A razor-sharp spiciness lances through Demerara sweetness and rich peat. Absolutely magnificent. Palate: The enormous build up of spice adds to the multi-layered peat. The sweetness is almost like freshly crushed grist. Wave upon wave, layer upon layer of complexity. Finish: Massively warming and still spicy. The peat lingers while the spice bristles. Comment: A dram to be savoured and celebrated. Rating: 95  - www.whiskymag.com.

A natural-strength Talisker released way back in 2007 - and with a huge age statement. Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com absolutely loved it (review below), while Jim Murray thought the oak was encroaching. 50.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Last year’s edition was truly excellent, very fresh and very clean (91), here’s the brand new edition. Colour: straw. Nose: very different from the G&M, certainly peatier, purer, even cleaner, more ‘riesling’. Fab sharpness considering its age. It’s also much waxier, more on purely fresh seaweed, coal smoke, apple peelings, fresh walnuts, almond milk... Also hints of shoe polish, wet stones, lemon zest. Gets more mineral with time and smokier as well. I remember having written than the 2006 version remembered me of Didier Dagueneau’s ultra-sharp Pouillys. Well, this is the Silex! I love this, no need to say. Mouth: starts a little fruitier but mostly on lemons, oranges and citrons together with these waxy and slightly resinous notes again. The expected pepper is well here, as well as green tea, small bitter apples... Gets grassier and a little drier, with also notes of fresh hazelnuts, hints of olive oil... And then frankly medicinal, with quite some camphor, salt, peaty smokiness... Full bodied, almost pungent (well, not quite), getting very, very salty after a moment. It grows bigger and bigger, as if you just wakened a giant. Finish: very long, very salty, not too peppery, with bunches of crystallised citrus fruits just like at the attack. Well, I think I like this one even better than the 2006 version, which was maybe just a tad shier than the 2007. 92 points - whiskyfun.com

Skye is a new addition to the range as of 2015, named after the beautiful island on which the distillery resides. It follows in the footsteps of an increasing number of distilleries now offering NAS (No Age Statement) bottlings. Matured in a combination of refill and toasted American oak, with a slightly higher proportion of the latter, by all reports, this is a toned down and highly accessible Talisker with a slightly sweet edge. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Gorgeously salivating with concentrated, sharp barley; the peat is now more muffled and then vanishes under the toffee. Has some sublime moments on the nose and delivery but eventually vanishes under the weight of the unforgiving caramel. 89 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...The latest release from Talisker is an NAS bottling which contains whisky matured in toasted and refill American oak casks. According to the distiller, this is “An easy-drinking Talisker…more approachable, but still definitely Talisker.” Certainly approachable on the nose, with tangerines, honey, and milk chocolate, before ozone and peat smoke develop. Ginger and a hint of coal tar. Medium-bodied, with citrus fruit and increasingly hot spices, though never overwhelming. Spicy peat, white pepper, and aniseed in a nutty finish. 84 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...I have to say the first batches, around 2014 or 2015, did not quite convince me but as they say in rock and roll, you sometimes need tough love… Colour: light gold. Nose: it’s nice-ish, it’s just not very complex, although, could be that they improved the recipe, I’m not too sure. I find less of the straight coconut-and-vanilla elements this time, and more tin, concrete, menthol, camphor and green pepper. Mouth: the oak feels, there’s a drying bitterness, then salt and lemon peel. I find it tough, and god knows I love the 10yo, which shouldn’t be that older. The oak gets louder (sawdust). Finish: medium, gritty and drying. Needs polishing. The aftertaste is a little nicer, read more on smoked brine, but that’s a little late. Comments: duties done, can we have the new 31 Prima & Ultima now? Seriously, there are only two Taliskers which I don’t like a lot, Skye and Port Ruighe. All the others, from Storm to the oldest glories, I really like or love a lot. 77 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... [First release tasted] Surprisingly clean and youthful for a 30 year old, both on the nose and palate. Complex, too, with a sea breeze freshness, vanilla malt, polished oak spice, smoked seaweed, lightly tarred boat docks, toasted nuts, and lingering telicherry pepper. Mature, yet still quite powerful. Rivals the original Talisker 25 year old and the Talisker 18 year old as one of the finest Talisker whiskies ever released.

[49.3% bottling tasted] ...These babies pull very mixed feelings when tasted blind because, I think, they deliver rather less power than younger versions of Talisker (I think the 20 or 25 are much more consensual). Nose: extremely dry, and extremely austere at first nosing, almost Jansenist if I may say so. Rocks, clay, earth (or even mud), coal, tar, leaves, putty, soot… It’s only after a good ten minutes that more bitter orange and fresh walnut notes do show up, but the whole never quite becomes fruity. There’s also more medicinal notes, disinfectant… And then the expected pepper. With water: more ‘coastality’. Oysters and lemon. Mouth (neat): big, earthy, leafy, rooty and peaty attack, with quite some brine underneath. Very dry yet again, sharp, very austere, but I love this. With water: more medicinal, Islay-style. More sea stuff as well (to keep all this as short as possible). Finish: maybe not very long but ashier. Also a little olive oil, with something tannic? Also lemons, salt, pepper, oysters…. Comments: I know my descriptions may not sound very sexy, but actually, I adore this kind of whisky, which I find supremely elegant and so anti-commercial, whatever that means. Joni Mitchell vs. Britney Spears… hem, forget about that. 93 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

The Talisker distillery is one of the most remote in the world, perched on the rugged western shores of the Isle of Skye, at the head of Loch Harport, in the small village community of Carbost. The distillery was originally founded back in 1830 – and not everyone in the local community was happy about it. The then parish minister felt the development of the distillery was 'one of the greatest curses that could befall (Carbost) or any other place'. More than a hundred and fifty years later, and Talisker is universally regarded as a jewel in the heart of Skye. The distinctive Talisker style recommends itself to seafood such as smoked salmon, kipper fillets, grilled smoked mackerel and oysters.

Time has rounded but not tamed the powerful taste of this Malt Classic.

Tasting note: It's been almost a decade since we revisited this maritime beauty, and at the very least, it's an age statement bottling that's held its ground - arguably even improved. Deep gold with water-like edges and solid legs. Opening aroma suggests dark chocolate and vanilla combined with a keynote of dried kelp. Air contact adds to the diversity introducing semi-ripe apple, pickled ginger, sea breeze and pepper. A creamy yet peppery profile that includes kelp, vanilla and a mildly oily texture. Finish ups the spice closing tongue tingling, fresh, citrus lozenge-like, mildly salty. Hints of pickled ginger, Fishermans Friend and drying oak in the aftertaste; some late sweetness returns in the fade. Complex, assured and immensely satisfying. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... First sniffings boast big-hearted aromas of maple sugar and caramel; further aeration stimulates marine notes of seaweed and light brine, but deeper notes of chili pepper, black pepper, honey and vanilla top off the experience. Palate entry is honeyed and full; at midpalate the taste profile inches its way towards the smoke-tobacco-ash-tar side of the flavor scale, but is sweet. Concludes moderately oily and lightly salty. 90-95 points  - wineenthusiast.com.

Other reviews... A sophisticated and refined Talisker, if that’s not an oxymoron. But this is certainly true when compared to the 10 year old. This 18 year old is deeper too, with less of the fishnets, more of oak boat docks. Less lemongrass, more fruit gum drops. There’s still that knock-out punch on the finish. There’s a fine line between polishing the rough edges of a beautifully powerful whisky and ripping its heart and soul out with a knife by dumbing it down. This whisky has not crossed that line. A fabulous whisky! 93 points - - maltadvocate.com

...Old gold color. Aromas and flavors of honey butter on grilled muffin with a pleasant hint of peat, warm sand and pepper. Dry-yet-fruity and medium bodied with a burning ember, buttercream, poached pear, and cigar tobacco accented finish. Nice integrated honeyed grain, fruit and smoke flavors that would be a great refreshing, introduction to peaty island Scotch whiskies.

Talisker, which combines the island style of distinctive peatiness with its own individual notes of spice and pepper, has accented its character by finishing in sweet Jerez Amoroso cask wood, amplifying Talisker's sweetness and rounding off its 'rugged' island edges. Sweet peat references pipe tobacco, white pepper, then lanolin becoming more salty and dried seaweed like; 3-4 minutes in the glass finds the smokiness in retreat revealing hints of dates and dried banana. Delicious, zesty, salty delivery is enhanced by lashings of sooty, sweet peat- the latter carrying white pepper through the finish. Lanolin, spice and ginger bread aftertaste sees the sugars more reigned in. Talisker is classic with sushi, but this 'worked' expression lends itself to the end of a meal - creme brulee? 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [2014 bottling] Fleeting green apples on the nose, before sweetening with figs, sultanas, red berries, and chili. Peat smoke finally makes its presence felt. Full-bodied on the palate, with spicy smoke, dark chocolate, peaches, and Jaffa orange; the additional fruitiness courtesy of the amoroso cask influence. Long and softly smoky in the finish, with ginger and lingering fruit notes. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...I mourn the loss of the nuclear effect it once had, but the sheer quality of this compensates. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017

...The immediate shore-like blast suggests that the sweet amoroso casks haven’t been overly enthusiastic in their embrace. What seems to have happened is that while giving some date and prune they have added an extra layer of oak — giving a charred element — and, like Lagavulin, hints of tar. The smoke is obscured and the pepper is Javanese. It’s a polite Talisker, but the absorption of the smoke means it has lost something integral to its being. 45.8% Alc./Vol. 86 points

    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.8%

One of the most seductive, seamlessly integrated and softly textured peated expressions from any island distillery.

Since 2011, Talisker's 30 and 25 year old expressions were bottled at 45.8% as opposed to natural strength. Brine and pepper lift gives way to peach and vanilla followed by hints of liquorice and smouldering cedar wood. Exposure emphasises the ripe orchard fruit aspect. Semi-sweet and briny in the mouth with an oily peat and fruit fusion. Finish turns beeswaxy, mildly peppery, (Fisherman's Friend lozenge) and beautifully rounded off by sooty, creamy peat. Text book balance. Talisker at its most accessible? Tasted from a 15ml sample. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A malt of magnificent complexity that generously rewards time and concentration. So for some, it may not be easy to get through the forests of oak early on, but switching your senses onto full alert not only pays dividends, but is no less than this great old malt deserves and demands. 96.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...I think this was the first 25yo bottled at Talisker's usual lower strength instead of the previous 'high strength' levels. The last earlier version that we've tried was the 2008 at 54.2%, brilliant stuff (WF 91). Colour: full gold. Nose: a completely different planet after the Dark Storm, this is smoother of course, but also more complex, with some lilac, tangerines, roses, almonds, this very 'tropical' smokiness that only old peaters can display, beauty cream, brine, oysters... It's a lovely nose, delicate and subtle. Mouth: once again, a slightly smoother version of an old Talisker but power is there. It's no straight brute as older versions could be (remember the 62% vol? Or was that the 20yo?) but it's not lacking oomph. Smoked overripe apples and lemon curd plus brine and kippers. There. Finish: long, maybe a notch woodier, with this feeling of strong green tea but also a perfect brine. Little pepper this time. Comments: I know some whisky lovers and Talisker aficionados were shocked by the drop in strength and in theory, I should be shocked too, but let's be honest, this remains a mightily powerful dram. 90 points - Serge Valentin, www.whiskyfun.com

A homage to the Talisker 8 year old from the 1970s and 80s which helped build the brand's reputation internationally, it comes bottled at the strength used by one-time owners, John Walker & Sons Ltd. We didn't get to try this at the official Diageo launch, however we received a small sample a few weeks later.

Tasting note: Deep gold. Pepper-driven on the nose with lanolin-laced peat and latent citrus adding freshness. The palate follows through in an intense, oily Talisker with the spices ratcheted up. Some smokey bacon before the sweet malt thickens then recedes in a wave of coastal character. Chillie heat, lanolin and white pepper finish the whisky in text-book distillery style. It's the quintessential Winter warmer. 59.4% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, this is the first Special Releases Talisker since 2013. Peppery tweed, ozone, coconut oil, and subtle smoke on the nose. The palate features woodsmoke and chili, toffee, and green berries. White pepper, sea salt, and a savory note in the finish.

Delve into the world of Sherry-finished single malt without breaking the bank.

First, there was the 'Sherry Cask Edition'. Now comes a variation focusing on Oloroso sherry maturation in a one litre format. Equal in quality to its sister release, this is another solid value that offers clear sherry input without being overdone. The classic notes of fruit cake, orange zest and sweet nuttiness are all here, sensitively dialled in to match the lighter volume of Tamnavulin's spirit. There is also a lovely peel tang to the finish, completed by whisps of cocoa and ginger biscuit. 40% but tastes like 43%. We preferred it straight, or with just a few ice cubes, but if you must add water, do so judiciously. There is a sweet spot to this whisky that errs on the less is more side. Find it and this gentle dram is a pure delight. Travel retail exclusive. One shipment at the current price.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Vivid amber gold. Nose: Moist fruit cake soaked in Oloroso sherry with hints of candied orange peel, marzipan, crushed almonds and ginger. Taste: Rich flavours of tarte tatin, pineapple and maple syrup followed by hints of thick treacle cake and orange marmalade. Finish: Rich and smooth - A signature Speyside malt.

One in a series of Tamnavulins for the Travel retail market with a wine matured theme. This one sees an initial period in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into Spanish ex-Tempranillo red wine casks. The finishing adds a pleasing tint of colour as well as contributing a berry-like notes. Bottled in a large format at 40%, the producers say to expect warm, sweet flavours of figs, maple syrup and toffee apple with notes of peaches, decadent chocolate ganache and a touch of coffee.

Other reviews... A little NAS finished in one the strongest red wines, what could go wrong? Remember, tempranillo is the varietal that's giving us the famous red Riojas. Colour: gold, not pink, and not even salmony/apricotty. Nose: as unusual as we were expecting, rather on peach and pear leaves, tomato leaves as well, then more earthy wood (barrel) and cassis, fruits and buds. Enters then more and more beer territories, which comes just as unexpected, but that would rather be Kriek and double-IPA. Mouth: a bizarre drop on the palate. Sour cherries, more Kriek, homemade mead, then wine gums and, well, a feeling of sangria. An acquired taste, shall we say. A little bitter/sour oak. Finish: short. Barrel water and more mead mixed with cherry juice. Comments: I'll never really manage to acquire this taste, I'm afraid. Please no red wine in my malt whisky (we'll have to make a T-shirt one day). 70 points - whiskyfun.com

...Double Cask sure is a difficult name for any whisky, it’s like if you’d have named your newborn son Donald J. or Adolf. And boo, there’s no age statement either… Colour: gold. Nose: wait, this is nice! There’s this typical vanilla-ed and banana-y profile that screams US oak, but there are good pastries underneath, and marmalade and quince jelly, and then raisins with a touch of mint (leaves). This may have seen some sherry-seasoned oak at some point. It’s a nice, well-carved nose. Mouth: a little more kick would have been welcome, especially since treatments with active wood demand stronger spirits and do not favour heavy reducing too much, in my humble experience. What I’m trying to say is that it’s all a tad too modern for me (again, bananas, vanilla, raisins, coconut), but I agree it’s still a very fine dram, done with care, and very pleasant to drink. Indeed it is a drinker. Finish: short, a tad tea-ish, pleasant. Apricots. Comments: I was having fears – not just because of the unimaginative name – but I was wrong, it really is a fine dram. 80 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Tasting note: Following the rest of the re-packaged range comes Arran's hugely successful wine cask finishes. After initially maturing in x Bourbon casks for around eight years, this was finished in a selection of Portuguese Port casks. Here the malt, which normally is a highlight of any Arran, feels subdued, the spirit slightly sharper and the length only moderate. Compared to equivalent expressions, the port pick up is slight. There's an odd mustiness on the palate and the finish is short. Try it with dark chocolate. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Arran... Nose: Cinnamon, baked apples. Palate: Vanilla spice, ripe citrus & dried fruits and nuttiness. With a splash of water more depth of mandarin citrus with fudge and honeyed notes. Finish: spice, bitter orange, chocolate, cherries.

This eight year old Bourbon cask matured Arran comes finished in a selection of x-Sauternes casks sourced from a small producer in Bordeaux. The wine style compliments Arran's typically rich malt, here adding succulence and providing a subtle overlay of yellow fruits, honey and sweet bread. While the alcohol is slightly nippy, it strikes a nice balance between wine and whisky without being overly sweet. Pair it with a creamy toffee or fudge based pudding. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Arran... Nose: Honey sweetness and citrus. Palate: Richly honeyed and backed with a lifting zestiness which slides into spice and zingy salt. Once the dram opens out, vanilla and sultana stand out followed by notes of toasted oak. Finish: Sweetness, Honey, Apricots, Melon, Honeysuckle.

"... the spirit itself is nothing short of brilliant." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

Machrie Moor is a reference to an area of Arran island strewn with Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones, once used by a giant to tether its favourite dog (hence the label). The whisky is moderately peated at 20ppm and started as a regular 'limited release' of around 18,000 bottles, but became so popular, the distillery decided to make it a part of the core range. This label has now been superseded by a ten year old and a cask strength version. The style offers a balance between Arran's fruity malt and moderate phenols which are applied in soft brush strokes. More Highland than Island, the middle stage oily-sweetness is followed by a surge of pepper and sooty smoke before turning ashy and medium dry (think high-quality Ardmore). It's pretty close to spot-on in terms of overall balance while packing a decent punch at 46% ABV - and with more peat than the nose suggests. If the intention was to create a compelling alternative to entry-level Islay, then Machrie Moor is a success. Non-chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [5th Edition] A few tired old Bourbon barrels have taken the score down slightly on last year. But the spirit itself is nothing short of brilliant.

Distillery records show Glenturret used peat dug from Octhertye Estate in the early 1800s. The present day set up permits the production of peated and non-peated spirit at different times of the year from the same stills. Taking advantage of that, Glenturret have produced this expression. American oak sherry seasoned casks build the confectionery sweetness from the new-make while refill casks contribute smokiness. Saying that, the peat input isn't anything like the medicinal / maritime attack found in many Islays. Instead, the effect feels more attuned to mesquite smoke (think Mezcal) alongside earthy farmyard notes with a gentle, oily-fruitiness developing at the finish. Complexity isn't high, but Glenturret succeeds in delivering a very elegant, dry aperitif alternative to traditional heavy-peat styles. 44% Alc./Vol.

This appears to be a Glenturret bottled prior to the recent take over, and probably the same liquid that was then blended with some of the rare 30-year-old spirit bottled in this Lalique-designed decanter. Judging by the colour, there looks to be more than a few sherry casks at play here. After three decades ageing, expect notes of dried fruit, stem ginger, dried oak and cardamom. Launched in 2023, this is Macallan's celebration of the art of maturation, where the whisky's rich amber hue hints at the intricate dance between the spirit and the oak. Intended solely as a travel retail exclusive. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Ex-seasoned sherry oak, not sure if it was full-maturation or some 'enhancement', not sure that even matters (good mood mode activated here). Colour: dark gold. Nose: once again, it is rather 'old-school Macallan' while we're no longer too worried that the palate might be too light and too unbalanced by the wood since this baby has been bottled at 43% ABV. The difference is enormous between 40 and 43, we all know that. We find the usual dried and fresh figs, the apricots, some dried pears (slices), some high-end apple compote, various raisins, plum pudding, treacle toffee, kumquats and bergamots, some Demerara sugar, caramel and fudge… Nutshell: all is well. Mouth: there's much more happening in this one, the oak doesn't quite get in the way and the fruits in all their forms have plenty of room to express themselves. Kumquats, raisins, tangerines, figs, jujubes, apples, then honey, maple syrup and chocolate,  the latter becoming then a little bitter and drying, which comes from the oak I would suppose. No big deal, it's an excellent one. Also a little meatiness ala M**** (another 'M', a.k.a. the beast of Dufftown). Finish: still a little short and dry, but these peppered Seville oranges and these cloves do really work. Hints of honeysuckle. Comments: around 500-600€, apparently. No comments, except that to be honest, we would have preferred it to be a bit stronger, but it's still very good. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

...The nose opens with noble lacquered wood, lots of milk chocolate, carefully complemented by red berries and sour fruits. The signature sulfur content of The Macallan alcohols is felt. A little later, crusts of gray bread appear and the fruit palette is somewhat transformed: pineapples, dried bananas, peaches and orange peels become audible. The taste is similar to the nose in terms of wood, chocolate and sulfur, but there are more sherry tones here in the form of almonds, dried fruits, raisins, red grapes. Also present are floral honey and blood oranges. The finish is long, woody and chocolatey, with nuts and dried fruits. - whiskybase.com

It’s the latest batch of the well-known and now very expensive 18yo ‘sherry’. It’s actually not pure 1996, as it says ‘1996 and earlier years.’ I had found last year’s 1995 very excellent (WF 89.) Colour: amber. Nose: feels like home. It’s probably not as deep and complex as the pre-1980 vintages, and certainly more focused on fruitcake and toffee, but indeed it’s a lovely nose. Glazed chestnuts, honey sauce, touches of fennel or dill, dried porcinis, cigars, toasted brioche and, yeah, sultanas. Really a perfect nose, and the 43% vol. make it pleasantly approachable, in both senses of the word. Mouth: it’s a little narrow, perhaps, less majestic and ample than the old ones for sure, and maybe a little too toffee-ed and malty (Ovaltine-malty.) Raisin-filled chocolate, praline, butterscotch. The mouth feel is perfect, though. Finish: good length, spicy and toffee-ish. Peppered fudge. Comments: very, very good, of course, I’m just missing a little more complexity on the palate. But as they say, ‘it does what it says on the tin.’  87 points - whiskyfun.com

    ABV: 43%

The 2024 release in Macallan's 'A Night on Earth' series was created in collaboration with Jerez-born artist, María Melero, whose festive designs capture the spirit of celebration in her hometown. Named A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera, the whisky pays tribute to the Spanish region where The Macallan’s cask journey begins, laying the foundation for the whisky that follows. It goes without saying that the spirit inside comes aged in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks! As usual, this is bottled with a natural colour at 43% Alc./Vol. and comes with an impressive 'fold-out' presentation case.

Notes from the producers... With a deep amber colour and an aroma reminiscent of dried fruit, dark chocolate and spices, this whiskey is a true sensory experience. The palate is complex and full-bodied with notes of sherry, raisins and caramel, balanced with spices and oak, giving a long and satisfying finish.

A limited release exclusive to travel retail, this expression in the Colour Collection features whisky that has matured for 21 years in American oak casks seasoned with Sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Artist and Graphic Designer David Carson captures the influence of the cask through an array of rich brown tones that evoke the wood. Expect flavours of tropical fruits, coffee, hazelnuts and dark chocolate orange, with a natural, warm bronze colour that is evoked by the light oak finish of the presentation box that the whisky is housed in. 43% Alc./vol.

"For reasons not even science can wholly explain, whisky has always matured best in oak casks that have contained sherry."
Such was Macallan's claim on back labels of the era.  Like the even harder to find 18 year olds, these twelves from yesteryear seem to be drying up. In full Sherry-form, distilled in the heydey when majority Golden Promise barley was still being used and probably bottled in the 1980s. One only. 43% Alc./Vol.

A limited edition Macallan matured exclusively in sherry casks and bottled at ABV 40%. It's part of the 'Colour Collection' which sees a return to age statements for the duty free market and represents a celebration of Macallan's commitment to natural colour and sherry seasoning. From its pale oak colour to the deep burnished chestnut of the 30 Year Old, the colour of these whiskies gradually deepens. The presentation is captured through the eyes of American Artist and Graphic Designer, David Carson, who collaborated with the distillery to create the campaign artwork. American oak casks, harmoniously complemented with a subtle inclusion from European oak are employed. This is probably quite a large outturn, yet it's still sold at an extremely high price compared to the general release 12YO, so you could say it's another Macallan aimed at 'conspicuous consumption'.

Other reviews... Around 150€ vs. around 70€ for the 12 yo 'Double Cask', there must be something happening. Pure golden promise? Proper sherry butts used in bodegas and not just seasoned? What's sure is that the label is beautiful. And the whisky, you may ask? Let's see… Colour: deep gold. Nose: reassuring, slightly fat given the low strength – which is good – with rather a lot of beeswax and many dandelion flowers, then some apricot and mirabelle jams, juicy fresh sultanas, fudge, acacia honey… It would then fade away a little bit, because of the bizarrely low strength. Are we still in 1995? Mouth: good presence, with the expected roasted nuts and toasted breads, but some burnt oak tends to feel in the background. Some chestnut honey, black Assam (remember we say Assam for any black tea, ha), black pepper, a wee bit of cardboard that, indeed, feels a little '1995'… And some fresh marmalade and more mirabelle jam lifting it a little bit. Finish: short, the 40% vol. really feel now. Or rather, they do not feel. Cardboard, sawdust, marmalade, dried apricots. Comments: it's rather simple, 84 points at 40% vol. and probably 85 at 43% vol., 86 at 46% and 87 at 50%. You bet! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Macallan's 'Double Cask' 18 Year Old was matured for almost two decades in a combination of American and European oak - all oloroso seasoned. Assertive caramel and toffee aromas lead the nose. On the palate, vanilla and creamy caramel are enlivened by a hint of orange peel. Adding water creates an even bigger and richer effect, bringing more caramel center stage, finishing long with a sprinkle of cinnamon and cocoa powder. This easy sipper is a 18-year-old single malt rested in ex-Sherry casks. 95 points - wineenthusiast.com

Already onto the 2022 edition in the UK, Australia has just received stocks of the 2021 Sherry oak release. This is a slight departure on the 'Double Cask 18 Year Old', (matured in both European and American sherry seasons oak casks), with the 'Sherry Oak Cask' seeing Macallan filled exclusively into Oloroso seasoned oak from Jerez, Spain. Besides sporting a much deeper colour, the resulting whisky is characterised by mature oak, ginger and raisin flavours that are in some ways like extra-aged Armagnac. Our tasting also found nutty oloroso, dried citrus peels with touches of orange spice cake, muted sulphur and peel-heavy marmalade in a dryish nose feel. Some trademark Macallan honey and elegance is evident but the emphasis remains on sherry-driven dried fruits set against taut astringency. The finish is very fine, with bitter dark chocolate, tea-like tannins and wood spices. It falls a little flat with water, so to get the most out of this Macallan we'd recommend enjoying it neat or with minimal ice. 43% Alc./Vol.

Part of an annual line of limited editions designed to celebrate 'perfect pairings' and harmonious flavour profiles, 'Rich Cacao' is also a collaboration with world-renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca (of 3 Michelin star fame at El Celler de Can Roca). Specifically tailored to pair with fine chocolates, crafted from a combination of European and American oak casks with a 'zero-waste' approach, it is a homage to the cacao plant in its entirety. The gift box is made using discarded cacao pod husks and is 100% recyclable. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Decidedly un-gimmicky. Downright delicious, actually. The aroma shows that classic, sherried Macallan core with new leather, dried citrus, honey, and almond paste, but atop all that sits a unique wood-driven layer that does indeed evoke chocolate, err cacao, although not in an incredibly obvious way. It’s more subtle than the name implies with well-balanced notes of cocoa nibs, dry baking chocolate, and a bit of milky coffee. The palate is where the confections really show off with deeper, darker notes of chocolate that become almost fudgy into the finish. There’s a creaminess here, as well, which works beautifully to complement notes of dark vanilla bean, juicy dates, and baking spice. It’s reminiscent of a holiday fruit cake, if that fruit cake had chunks of chocolate in it — which may sound a bit strange but not in this dram. Elaborate backstory aside, this is one to put on the shelf. - drinkhacker.com

Notes from the producer... AROMA: Chocolate fondant, honey, oak, zesty lime and ginger. PALATE: Dark chocolate, honey, dates, vanilla and cinnamon. FINISH: Long with rich chocolate.

There's been quite some interest in this curiously titled Macallan which reflects the story of Scotland’s world-famous Hogmanay festivities celebrated annually on 31st December. This seasonal release is a collaboration with acclaimed Japanese-French illustrator, Erica Dorn, whose artwork has featured in director Wes Anderson’s films.
The unique packaging provides a special unboxing experience coupled with Dorn’s playful abstract illustrations, inspired by the historic fire rituals dominant in New Year celebrations around the world. Upon opening the gift box you discover a blue interior, representing the night skies of Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) and the blue from the national flag of Scotland, the Saltire.

Says Macallan's Lead Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgess, "Creating A Night on Earth in Scotland has been an extremely personal experience for me, which took me back to growing up in our family home in Speyside, just across the river from The Macallan Estate."

American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, along with American ex-bourbon barrels have been employed to bestow a rich, sweet shortbread-like character - a whisky referencing the rich Scottish delicacy traditionally gifted and eaten at Hogmanay. This profile is punctuated by festive notes of dried orange and spice. It's recommended neat, with a serve of shortbread on the side. 40% Alc./Vol. Natural colour.

Other reviews... Macallan always loves to wear its sherry on its sleeve, but this is nonetheless one of the racier bottlings I’ve seen from the classic Speyside outfit in recent years. Boldly sherried up front, the whisky exudes notes of fresh clementines and cloves on the nose, though these exuberant, Christmassy characteristics are tempered by notes of oiled leather and roasted chestnuts. Austere but refined, it immediately invites sipping, where many of these same elements are evident. Oily with orange and nougat notes prominent, it fades into a lightly grassy cereal character, some youth evident later in the game. The finish has a gently pastoral character to it, though it remains bright and dripping in citrus notes, almost lemony at times. While it’s not overwhelmingly serious or complex, it is hard to put down — and a (nearly) classic example of what Macallan does best. And it’s awfully pretty in the box. - drinkhacker.com

Yet another expression where a big brand Scotch is taking age out of the equation, letting the liquid (not the number on the label) do the selling. Launched in the US in late 2014, Macallan Rare Cask is drawn from 16 different hand picked sherry-casks, the majority of which are first fill. The Sherry input is reportedly quite profound, so expect a bigger, richer expression.

"Whisky obviously has an age, we just don't publicize it here," says Stuart MacPherson, the Macallan Master of Wood. "This is something the whisky industry created in the early 20th century, where we put an age on it to make the whisky easier for the customer to identify. We're taking things a step forward and saying this isn't about the age, it's about what the consumer wants and the skills of the whisky maker."

While Macallan will not disclose the age of the various whiskies in the mix, their theory is that by not being tied to a number on the label, Master Distiller, Bob Dalgarno can work to taste, not to age, and so do some of his finest work.

Described by one taster as "a ruby red wow of a whisky" and another as "a Macallan fit for Kings", this certainly seems to have hit the sweet spot for many veterans of the brand on the web. The stunning colour is highlighted by a sculpted, heavy glass decanter and red presentation box.

Tasting note: Deep copper coin colour. Sherried, but not in a profound way, with a little more pepper than the traditional 18YO. Give it plenty of time in the glass to let the aroma fill out. Spice and peel on entry, but gains richness and typical Macallan polish towards the finish: Shortbread, dark chocolate, fruit cake and cinnamon flavours emerge as well as whispers of smoke. Elegant and slightly leaner Macallan. Tastes like some Fino barrels could be in the mix? 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... One of these very embarrassing newish NAS bottlings, ridden with stories about oak and sherry – and laudatory adjectives – but in fact, it’s all a thick smokescreen of claims, there’s nothing certain. Only the price ‘may’ tell us where it sits... But can you trust a price tag? Colour: amber. Nose: an earthy and slightly smoky sherry that reminds me of the older 8 or 12, with raisins, kirsch, Seville oranges, chocolate, chestnut honey and then cinnamon, cloves, mint, and nutmeg. It doesn’t feel very old, but I’d call this ‘classic’. Mouth: indeed, the older 12+. Quite a lot of bitter oranges and honey in the arrival, then this very peculiar toffeeness plus Corinthian raisins, pipe tobacco, liqueur-filled chocolate, and a touch of vanilla fudge. Millionaire shortbread. Good body. Finish: medium, very well balanced I have to say, rather on marmalade this time. Honeyed and moderately spicy aftertaste. Comments: seriously, I think this is very good, and probably much more ‘Macallan’ than other newish bottlings. Great work, only the price is a little, well, you know what a mean.

Whisky and Scotland inseparably intertwined.

Made from the most elemental of ingredients, water and 100% malted barley, Single Malt Whisky has become inextricably woven into the fabric of Scotland's history, culture and customs. Indeed, there are few drinks which are so closely related to the land of their birth than Scotch (even though most distilleries nowadays are not actually owned by the Scots.)

Malt Whiskies, which differ considerably in flavour according to the distillery and region from which they come, tend to have a more pronounced bouquet and flavour than grain-heavy blended whiskies. By definition, malt whiskies are also single distillery, made by the one distiller in the one location. They offer something blends generally don't: a sense of time and place that translates into a one-of-a-kind flavour sensation influenced by the water source, the shape and size of the stills, the type of cask, age and the degree of peating. If you're new to whisky, it's worth reading our Scotch Whisky primer here.

How Single Malt Scotch suddenly became so popular...

90% of the single malt Scotch produced continues to be used to make blended whisky, and the proportion was once much higher than that. Glenfiddich's famous 'Special Reserve Pure Malt' was the whisky that introduced and popularised the bottling of Single Malts to the world. Glen Grant, Macallan and others followed suit and in the 1980s malts started to gain a reputation as a 'more authentic' product than blends. At the same time, the popularity of vodka and other spirits began threatening the market share. In response, blenders dropped their prices. Unfortunately, consumer's perceptions of blended whisky were also lowered. A sense of snobbery developed against the 'cheap' and 'inferior' blends. Unjustified as this was (and remains), it was a sequence of events that helped prepare the way for the current Single Malt boom. So successful has the rise of Single malt been that the industry has found itself in a position of deficit. Older malts are becoming increasingly rare and pricey, partly accounting for the present trend of N.A.S. ('No Age Statement') bottlings and limited edition collector releases.
