The Macallan Sherry Oak Cask 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Annual 2021 Release

Already onto the 2022 edition in the UK, Australia has just received stocks of the 2021 Sherry oak release. This is a slight departure on the 'Double Cask 18 Year Old', (matured in both European and American sherry seasons oak casks), with the 'Sherry Oak Cask' seeing Macallan filled exclusively into Oloroso seasoned oak from Jerez, Spain. Besides sporting a much deeper colour, the resulting whisky is characterised by mature oak, ginger and raisin flavours that are in some ways like extra-aged Armagnac. Our tasting also found nutty oloroso, dried citrus peels with touches of orange spice cake, muted sulphur and peel-heavy marmalade in a dryish nose feel. Some trademark Macallan honey and elegance is evident but the emphasis remains on sherry-driven dried fruits set against taut astringency. The finish is very fine, with bitter dark chocolate, tea-like tannins and wood spices. It falls a little flat with water, so to get the most out of this Macallan we'd recommend enjoying it neat or with minimal ice. 43% Alc./Vol.
