Bertrand Gautherot has been quietly working away in the hamlet of Buxières-sur-Arce, in the Aube’s Côte des Bar region of Champagne, yet his wines have not escaped the attention of the top restaurants and retailers of the world. Each year Vouette & Sorbee allocations are eagerly awaited, and these exceptionally fine wines are consistently some of the best and most unique expressions from the area.

The vineyards here lie closer to Chablis than to Épernay, both in distance and geology, with soils dominated by the same Kimmeridgian limestone for which Chablis is famed. Gautherot’s wines take their deep and powerful personalities from these soils and the (relatively) sunnier climate of the southern Aube. His wines all come from a single harvest—noted by the “R” number on the back label—with the exception of the Fidèle cuvée, which sees a small addition of 5-10% reserve wine from a perpetual blend started in 2001. His winemaking abhors any kind of manipulation in the cellar. Gautherot uses the traditional Coquard press and the juice is transferred into oak or amphorae via gravity rather than being pumped. Primary fermentations are always carried out with natural yeasts and riddling and disgorgement are all done entirely by hand. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration and without dosage. The results are some of Champagne’s most original and delicious wines: wines of distinctive personality, energy and sense of place.

Blanc d’Argile has been described as Grand Cru Chablis with bubbles—a comparison that, on this evidence, flatters many a Chablis producer. Within the cold, west-facing, Kimmeridgian limestone-rich lieu-dit of Biaunes, there is a small plot of Chardonnay that Gautherot planted wild (without preparing the soils) amongst the native vegetation. The Côte des Bar is overwhelmingly planted to Pinot Noir, but nevertheless he did this in 2000, with massale cuttings from Anselme Selosse’s vines (in Avize) and Vincent Dauvissat’s Valmur Grand Cru vineyard. This plot has become the base of what Antonio Galloni calls “one of the most beautiful and distinctive wines in Champagne.” Fermentation for this wine was wild and took place in 4-10 year old, 500 and 600 litre barrels, with a small a portion of fruit fermented and raised in Georgian amphora. As with the Fidele, this wine spent roughly 15-18 months in bottle on lees, before being disgorged by hand with zero dosage.

The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral is a powerful, intense Champagne that captures all of the natural power of these old vines in Avize and Cramant. Aptly named, the Minéral is infused with tremendous mineral and soil inflections that give a real feeling of gravitas. Crushed rocks, slate, chalk and citrus accents are some of the many nuances that emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This release is fabulous. It is also a reticent wine, though, so at least a year or two in bottle will help soften. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Mineral is unsurprisingly the most salty, briny, and mineral inflected wine in the Argapart range. It is a blend of two old vine Grand Cru Chardonnay parcels on the border of Avize and Cramant, and spends 5 years on lees. Disgorged in February 2017 with a dosage of 5g/l.

    Other Reviews....
Half of this is from Les Champs Boutons in Avize and fermented in tank, while the other half is from similar terroir in Bionnes and Buzons in Cramant, just 100 meters away, and vinified in barrel. It feels unusually concentrated and ripe for the vintage, showing a subtle richness and depth on the palate, yet it’s held within a sleekly chalky frame, its salty, briny minerality increasing in intensity on the finish. It’s a superb edition of this cuvée, warranting at least another five to six years of post-disgorgement age to allow it to show its best.

2012 Pascal Agrapart Avizoise Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne Grand Cru
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $320. 00
    Bottle
    $3840.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Disgorged March 2019. Avizoise is sourced from vines of up to 60 years old in the clay-rich (argilo-calcaire) coteaux d’Avize vineyards of Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux. The richer soils in these two neighbouring sites give a deeper, more powerful and textured expression of Avize than the Minéral. Again, the 2012 does not disappoint although it is still tightly wound for now. Expect a super-complex wine with floral and mixed citrus fruit leading to a long, pithy and chalky close. The wine is aged entirely in 600-litre demi-muid, and the fermentation in bottle is carried out under cork rather than crown seal. Dosage is 3 g/L and the 2012 spent around 70 months on lees.

    Other Reviews....
The 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru L’Avizoise is another riveting wine from Pascal Agrapart. Here, too, the interplay of textural richness and finesse is utterly captivating. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and orchard fruit all develop, but it is the wine's feel and stunning balance that make it impossible to resist a second taste, and then a third. L'Avizoise emerges from old vine parcels in the Robards and Voie d'Epernay lieux-dits. In a word: exceptional!

Agrapart's 2011 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Vénus Grand Cru is a dream wine. Deceptively medium in body, the Vénus is all about nuance, sensuality and layers. Vibrant and finely sculpted, the 2011 exudes class. Hints of lemon peel, minerals and flowers add complexity, but it is the total package here that is most impressive. Today, the Vénus is dazzling. Vénus emerges from the La Fosse lieu-dit, a site that was first planted in 1959, and that, miraculously, has never been worked with mechanical methods. Disgorged: May 2017 and bottled with no dosage.

The 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral is superb. Powerful and ample in the glass, the Minéral is both broad on the palate and also somehow incredibly refined in feel, an appealing combination to be sure. There is so much to admire in the 2012, including its exceptional sense of total harmony. Dried flowers, almond, mint and dried apricot are all nicely layered in the glass, but again, it is the wine's poise that is truly mesmerizing. The Minéral is a blend of old-vine fruit taken from sites in Avize (Les Champboutons) and Cramant (Les Bionnes). Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 2019.

Disgorged May 2019. This is a very special wine from a very special plot of dirt. It comes from one-third of a hectare of vines in the renowned Avize vineyard called La Fosse. The vines here were planted in 1959 so they are extremely old by Champagne standards. It’s therefore a single parcel cuvée made in tiny quantities each year. The wine is named after the Boulonnais mare, Vénus, that first ploughed the vineyard. Apart from being ploughed by horse, this 0.3-hectare section of La Fosse lies on the very chalkiest portion of the slope near the village, contrasting with the more clay-rich soils of the Avizoise cuvee. Vénus is today one of the truly great cuvées of Champagne; it always shows incredible depth and yet retains finesse and subtlety, with pillowy layers of texture and serious complexity. In a year like 2012, it is mind-blowing. As always it is non-dosé and the 2012 spent over six years on lees. It is a magic, intense wine that can really benefit from decanting when young. It will also benefit further from two or three years further ageing and demands food. Treat it like a great white wine, served at the table with proper wine glasses, and you will be greatly rewarded.

    Other Reviews....
The 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vénus is ethereal, elusive and eccentric. It is also mesmerizingly beautiful. The expression of fruit is a bit richer and riper than in the other 2012s, with orchard fruit and tropical overtones that give the wine a sense of inner perfume and raciness. Soft curves and striking aromatics make for a stunning Champagne, an impression that is reinforced by the super-refined mousse. Persistent, racy and over, the Vénus is simply fabulous in 2012. Old vines planted in 1959 in the La Fosse lieu-dit inform the Vénus. Non-dosé.

The 2011 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L'Avizoise Grand Cru has more than enough brawn and depth to fill out its frame. The richness of fruit of this clay-rich site, along with the flavor complexity that is gained through aging on the cork results in a rich, vinous Champagne built on layers of flavor and vertical structure. As good as the 2011 is today, I would prefer to drink it on the earlier side given the challenges that 2011 presented. This is a superb wine for the year and a real revelation. Old vines in the Les Robarts and La Voie d’Epernay lieu-dits inform the Avizoise. Disgorged: May 2017. Dosage is 5 grams per liter.

Hailing from Damery in the Montagne de Reims, Champagne Alexandre Filaine started out as a side project for Bollinger winemaker Fabrice Gass with production a relatively modest 4000 bottles a year. Taking cues from his time at Bollinger, this blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier is fermented in old oak and matured under cork. It also sees no malolactic fermentation and receives 6g/L dosage.

    Other Reviews....
The NV Brut DMY is based on the same blend as Gass's Cuvée Spéciale, but it sees tirage under natural cork instead of crown cap, and longer maturation sur lattes. Bursting with aromas of pear, toasted brioche, dried fruit, spices, smoke and stone fruit, it's full-bodied, pillowy and concentrated, with an elegantly muscular profile, tangy acids and a long, saline finish. Deep, complex and layered, it's lent complexity both by its longer passage sur lattes and also by the presence of reserve wines and its élevage in old Bollinger barrels, some dating back to the 1920s. Readers who appreciate rich, sapid, patinated, dry Champagnes—the so-called "goût Anglais" historically favored by the English market—will find in the Brut DMY everything they have been looking for. Drink 2021 - 2037.

La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want

New technology, changing consumer values and a willingness to abandon tradition has not only multiplied the creative options available to wine label designers, but has frequently led to 'over-packaging'.

The extravagant presentation of Armand de Brignac has given some critics pause for reflection, one commenting “...the luxuriousness of the package made me afraid I’d subconsciously find the Champagne amazing simply because of its bottle.”

Produced by Champagne Cattier, the brand's first bottling was introduced in 2006 and is identifiable by its distinctive gold bottle with pewter Ace of Spades labels. Like Krug, the Brignac's Brut Gold is a multi-vintage style sourcing fruit from both Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Two other cuvées, a Rosé and a Blanc de Blancs were released in 2008. An appearance in the Jay-Z music video of "Show Me What You Got" prior to the launch of the Armand de Brignac brand sparked wide discussion on sites covering hip-hop and popular culture, following Jay-Z's public fallout with the makers of Cristal Champagne. As a result, Mr. Cattier's brand received more publicity in two weeks than it had in two decades. "I would have never imagined a few months ago that we'd become part of this mysterious and exclusive rap world," he said. "Jay-Z is a remarkable man. I'd like to invite him here to visit the winery."

Subsequent tastings by international wine critics have acknowledged Armand de Brignac as one of the world’s top Champagnes, though it comes with a price to match.

Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs is pressed from an exclusive selection of white Chardonnay from famed Grand Cru villages including Cramant, Avize, and Oger. It also counts itself as one of the rarest wines in Champagne, comprising no more than 5% of their small annual production.

These two direct imports are a great alternative to the big houses of Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon and the like, with their distinctive packaging, quality and this special introductory pricing making them exceptional value for Premier Cru Champagne.

The NV (2013) Extra Brut Cuvée La Rue des Noyers Non-Dosé is a rich, ample wine built on texture and layers of deep, resonant fruit. From the very first taste, the 2013 shows itself to be a Champagne of real breadth. Hints of orange peel, roasted nuts, minerals, ash, chamomile, dried flowers and spice all flesh out in the glass. A deceptively mid-weight wine, the 2013 is enveloping in feel, but also has softer contours than the more explosive 2012 tasted alongside it. This is all finesse. Disgorged: April 2016. Non-dosé.

Vincent and Raphaël work with a range of Champagne terroirs, mostly in the north of the region near Reims. The quality starts with thoughtful viticulture and low yields from a high percentage of old vines many planted in the 1960s and 1970s. Since the brothers took over the operation from their father in 2004, all chemical herbicide use was stopped and returned to labour intensive manual cultivation of their vines. In the cellar they employ long, natural fermentations and extended aging on lees. Parcels are vinified separately, and three-quarters of the production spends time in 350-litre barrels, while the reserve wines are held in demi-muids of 600 litres. Unusually, bottle aging is mostly under cork for the second fermentation (tirer à liege). The brothers believe this allows slightly more oxygen to get to the wine, resulting in Champagnes with finer bubbles and seamless texture. None of the wines go through malolactic fermentation. Bottling occurs without filtration and disgorgement is still done entirely by hand.

The 2013 Premier Cru Le Cran is showing especially well, bursting with aromas of pear, mirabelle, crisp yellow orchard fruit and blood orange, complemented by hints of buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's concentrated and intensely saline, concluding with a long, mineral finish. The late 2013 harvest has lent an exotic quality to the fruit tones this year that's very appealing, especially since Champagne hasn't seen to late a harvest in any of the years that have followed. This bottle was disgorged in July 2020 with three grams per liter dosage. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Campania Remensis is an extra brut rosé hailing predominantly from a single vineyard in Ormes with vines over 40 years old. The blend is 65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 5% Meunier, with the colour from an addition of 5% still Pinot Noir.

Disgorged in May 2019 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2015 Brut Rosé Campania Remensis is showing brilliantly. From a south-facing site characterized by sandy soils over limestone bedrock, it wafts from the glass with a beautiful bouquet of pear, red apple, fresh mint and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming, with a crisp core of fruit, a delicate mousse and fine-boned structure. This is one of the finest rosé wines I've tasted from Bérêche. Drink 2020 - 2035.

The 2014 Campania Remensis offers notable tension and along with a good bit of vibrancy that livens up the red berry, tobacco and floral notes. Deceptive in its pale color, the 2014 is beautifully persistent, not to mention impeccable in its balance, with terrific underlying structure. The 2014 is wonderfully alive in the glass. I loved it. Disgorged in November 2020 with two grams per liter dosage, Billecart-Salmon's newly released 2006 Brut Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is showing well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, dried fruits, walnuts, bee pollen and spices. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, it's a concentrated, muscular young wine, allying maturing flavors with broad structural shoulders and racy acids and concluding with a long, resonant and slightly mordant finish. From a parcel planted in 1964 and vinified entirely in oak, this is a powerful Champagne of considerable presence that needs some more time on cork to unwind and round out. Drink 2023 - 2036.

Although it was disgorged in November 2020, Mathieu Roland Billecart has been keen to delay the release. The ageing post disgorgement is just as important as that before it and sometimes overlooked, he maintains. The wine has an attractive Welsh gold colour, a lively and persistent mousse, and seductive aromas of nectarine, greengage and Victoria plum. I even noted a hint of spearmint. The palate maintains a youthful nervosité; behind that generous fruit, including red fruit (cherry mainly), hints of brioche and hazelnut and then an authoritative finish. Great potential. Drink 2022 - 2036.

Baked raspberries, salted yellow plums, figs, walnuts, orange zest, mahogany and some toasted vanilla on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with beautifully integrated, very fine bubbles. Dry, with exciting and unique white-pepper and sea-salt notes. Seamless. So harmonious. Salty and spicy clove notes evolving at the end. Amazing precision. Single parcel pinot noir, 100% vinified in oak barrels. No malo. 2g/l dosage. Disgorged November 2020. 6,750 bottles. Drink or hold.

Rich nose, yeasty and so alive. The oak shows even more as the wine opens up, giving a cedar spice. Such underlying depth and richness with such a surprising mineral and acidic backbone with a verbena note, mandarin – the most citric of the lot. There is a subtler nuttiness here that is almost creamy, like a Belgian chocolate, almost oily on the finish yet with such direction. Drink 2025 – 2045.

An exuberant mousse holds well over a pale straw, pale gold tinged base that’s threaded by an ultra fine and very persistent bead. Heady baked bread and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with hints of citrus and pear fruits also present. Subtle oily toast and roasted almond like notes ensue. Racy yeasty baked bread and citrus flavours are both sculptured and tense. Oily toast like characters, chalky oyster shell and roasted almond characters fill out on the back half. Finishes very dry and crisp with a chiselled feel to the long aftertaste.

Categorically the finest Extra Brut ever conceived, this is a cuvee of laser line and immortal structure that rejoices in the lightning energy of 2008 and the exacting precision engineering that is Billecart. A glowing, medium straw hue is a dazzling prelude to its scintillating purity and drive, cut with magnificent acid line and high-tensile chalk structure. The distinguished, north-east facing slopes of Verzy and Verzenay take a delightfully fragrant and pure lead, presenting white cherry and strawberry hull that ring out in clear peals like church bells. Age has done nothing to evolve its pitch-perfect high notes, lending just the most subtle nuance of fresh almond. A cuvée to age for another 20 years at least – and it will live effortlessly for 50. In sheer, breathtaking purity, monumental chalk minerality, endless longevity – not to mention ludicrous affordability – Extra Brut 2008 is one of the champagne buys of the decade.

A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, and as such is already extremely approachable. The flavour spectrum encompasses toast, oyster shell, citrus, cream and a flinty, mineral depth. There’s supreme balance and elegance here, combined with a hidden underlying power that will continue to emerge and broaden with time. The finish is dry and long.

This exceptional cuvee has been crafted since 1964 as a tribute to Nicolas Francois Billecart, founder of the house. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are selected in the Grands Cru communes of the Cote des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, with some of the base wine fermented in traditional Piece Champenoise (205 L) barrels.

This superb Champagne from another of our favourite houses opens with a white frothy mousse and shows excellent hold. Once dissipated, the pale gold straw coloured base wine emerges with exceptionally fine and profuse bead showing terrific persistence. The nose delivers a superb Champagne sniff with complex notes of baked bread, yeast lees, some toasty characters, a touch of citrus and some roasted almond end notes. On the palate yeast lees, toast, biscuit and a hint of citrus merge with some roasted nuttiness and a faint touch of dried honey. Creamy texture with a clean dry finish. Long aftertaste of yeast lees, baked bread, toast and roasted nuts.

This is the second of the now yearly special releases from Bollinger designed to highlight specific terroir in the context of house style. While this release follows a similar formula to the inaugural release, with the village of Verzenay the focus, each year the team will determine which of their sources performed best and deserve to be singled out. Verzenay grapes constituted 47% of the final blend this time round, compared to 48% last year. The cuvée is made from three different years, with 2016 as the base wine supplemented by wine from 2015 and from reserve magnums of 2006, also from Verzenay.

Disgorged in January 2021, Bollinger's newly released NV Brut Blanc de Noirs PN VZ16 offers up notions of pear, apple blossom, jasmine, orange zest and fresh pastry. Medium to full-bodied, precise and elegantly vinous, it's layered and charming, with racy acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse, and it concludes with a sapid finish. It's based on the 2016 vintage, complemented by older reserve wines matured in magnum, and derives, once again, largely from the village of Verzenay. Drink 2021 - 2037.

Soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting PN VZ 16 is a worthy follow up to the sublime 2015 that launched this new Blanc de Noirs in the Bollinger range last year. Sweet red cherry, Mirabelle, spice, mint and dried flowers all grace this wonderfully translucent, expressive Blanc de Noirs. North-facing sites in Verzenay that confer tension and energy make up about half the blend, with wines from Aÿ, Bouzy and Louvois playing supporting roles. Vinification is done in equal parts steel and oak. This release is based on 2016 (50% of the blend), with reserve wines that go back to 2006, including 23% from reserve magnums. Readers who enjoy Blanc de Noirs will adore the PN VZ 16. I find the interplay of vibrancy and the creamier notes that are so typical of the house style to be incredibly appealing. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Drink 2021 - 2033.

Fermented in oak barrels and aged under natural corks for almost 13 years, Bollinger's 2004 R. D. Extra Brut blends 66% Pinot Noir with 34% Chardonnay from 16 crus, 88% of which are classified as Grand Cru. The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing "recent disgorgement" (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity. A great Champagne on its way to improve over many years in the bottle. Tasted June 2018.

Mid gold colour. Smoky hints on the nose. Creamy texture, salty. Ripe, slightly honeyed aromas. Brioche and baked apple. Moderate intensity on the palate, but there is good persistence and a touch of savoury salinity on the finish. Lovely honeysuckle and cream on the length. Still a long way to go, but superbly open already. Seems softer in acidity than the 2002.

    Winery Notes….
A blend of 72% Pinot Noir and 28% Chardonnay, of which 7% was red wine, sourced from 84% Grand Cru vineyards and 16% Premier Cru vineyards. Fermented entirely in barrels and cellar aged for more than 10 years.
Brilliant salmon-pink colour. Subtle aromas that open with warm tobacco, chocolate, mocha and roasted coffee notes. This is followed by the fragrance of dried flowers and peony, and finally dried fruit and fruit compote notes, especially quince.
On the palate a fullness that strengthens the density of the wine, mature aromas, fruit jellies and honey. A great deal of length on the palate and a wonderfully fresh finish with notes of blood orange and mandarin peel.

    Other Reviews…..
Bollinger's 2008 La Grande Année is superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, ripe lemons, honeycomb, warm biscuits, dried white flowers and a delicate top note of walnuts and fino sherry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a beautifully refined mousse, superb concentration at the tightly wound core, incisive acids and a supremely elegant intermingling of Bollinger's oxidative stylistic signatures with fresh, vibrant fruit. The finish is long, precise and chalky. This is a Grande Année built for the cellar—the real excitement will come with a bit more bottle age—but this is already a thrilling Champagne in the making. Finished with eight grams per liter dosage, it was disgorged by hand in July 2018. This is also the first vintage of Grande Année to be bottled in Bollinger's new narrower-necked 1846 bottle, which should make for a slower evolving wine. Drink 2022-2060.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

Bollinger's 2008 Grande Année is rich, ample and full-bodied, with all of the pedigree of the vintage on display. Dried pear, dried flowers, chamomile, red plum and mint develop as the 2008 shows the breadth and creaminess that are such signatures of the Bollinger house style. A whole range of brighter, more floral and chalky notes appear later, adding translucence and energy. The 2008 is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay taken across 18 crus, and it is the Pinot that very much informs the wine in both flavor and texture. More importantly, the 2008 is one of the best Grande Années I can remember tasting. Bollinger fans won't want to miss it. Disgorged November 2018. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Drink 2020-2048.

A powerful, structured and graceful 2005, showing deft integration of the rich, chalky underpinning, firm acidity and expansive flavors of crushed black currant, spring blossom, toasted almond, crystallized honey and preserved lemon. Offers a fine, raw silk-like mousse and a long, spiced finish. Disgorged February 2015. Drink now through 2030.

Impressive concentration and power here. This is really assertive with ripe yellow orchard fruits and citrus within a core encased in a layer of more savory, toasty notes on both the nose and palate. There's that gentle hint of aldehyde that is the traditional stamp of the house plus savory woody notes, white mushrooms and some chalk and spices, too. The palate has a fleshy opening, filling out with peach and hazelnut flavors before a smooth ride to the finish. Approachable and complex. Drink it now through to 2020.

Bouvet Ladubay is regarded by many wine lovers as the finest expression of sparkling wine from the Loire Valley. The house was founded in 1851 by Etienne Bouvet, the son of a vigneron-sommelier who encouraged the young Bouvet in the wine trade. Recognizing the Loire's terroir to be extremely well-suited to the production of sparkling wines, he settled on the bank of the Loire River just outside the town of Saumur. Ms. Ladubay, Etienne’s accountant, soon became his wife, and the firm was christened “Bouvet-Ladubay”.

Bouvet is regarded by many wine lovers as the finest expression of sparkling wine from the Loire Valley

The house was owned by Taittinger Champagne from 1971 until 2007 and precisely the same wine making processes as the Grand Marque itself were employed in the production of the 2006 vintage. The grapes for the Bouvet 'Blanc' methode champenoise are predominantly Chenin Blanc, a varietal which has been grown in the Loire Valley prior to the Roman conquest of France. Bouvet source their grapes from 120 properties around Saumur - spread over an area of 15 x 30 kilometres. The notion of using such a diversity of vineyard sites is to provide complexity to the base wines. Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley employ a similar process. These 120 micro climates each provide the wine maker with base material that when blended together will create the sensation of considerable complexity. The art of blending is critical and at Bouvet the third generation of blenders from the same family are in charge - in fact they have been creating the blend for the last 60 years. State of the art, temperature controlled stainless-steel fermentation tanks, computer-regulated 'gyropallets,' or riddling machines, highly advanced freezing and disgorging equipment and micro-wave cork heaters have brought Bouvet’s vinification facility to the technical forefront. The winery itself, however, remains an impressive monument to the region’s history with the wines spending their final maturation period within freestone cellars built by Saint Florent monks around 1040. These tunnels cover some 2.6 hectares with eight kilometres of subterranean cellars - storage capacity for some 7,000,000 bottles!

Derived from a 73-acre, southwesterly exposed site that's one of Bouchard's highest-altitude parcels, the 2013 Blanc de Noirs Côte de Béchalin wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of citrus oil, mandarin, beeswax, white flowers, apricot and apple. Medium to full-bodied, racy and concentrated, it's vinous and tightly wound, with a bright spine and a long, chalky and aromatic finish. The 2013 is finer-boned and more incisive than its more muscular 2012 counterpart, and it displays some exotic aromatic top notes that reflect the late growing season. Bouchard recalls that he began picking on September 26, 2013, and finished in October, just before the rain set in.

The 2013 Blanc de Noirs Côte de Bechalin La Parcelle is fabulous. Candied lemon peel, almond, mint, sage and baked apple tart are some of the many notes that open in the glass. There is a sense of energy to the 2013 that is so beguiling. Eighty months on the lees give the Parcelle quite a bit of depth, but also the freshness that develops with extended time in the cellar. Zero dosage. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Bouchard's NV Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine (2018) is fleshy and dramatic, bursting with aromas of pear, warm bread, orange oil, nutmeg and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, it's one of the most gourmand, generous renditions of Val Vilaine to date, yet it remains beautifully precise and vibrant—even racy. It will be hard to resist young, but I suspect it will also evolve very gracefully in the cellar. As usual, while this is officially a "non-vintage" cuvée, the code "L18" on the label designates the year from which it is entirely derived.

The NV (2018) Blanc de Noirs Val Vilaine is bright, fresh and wonderfully nuanced. Orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes give the Val Vilaine so much energy. Cédric Bouchard coaxes so much nuance from these 40 year-old vines. The Val Vilaine is always the youngest wine in the range - the current release is the 2018, which spent just 15 months on its lees - but it will give readers who aren't familiar with these wines a very good idea of the house style. Zero dosage. Disgorged: April 2020.
