2015 Marie Courtin Efflorescence Extra Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkBased in the tiny hamlet of Polisot in the southern Cote des Bars region of Champagne, Dominique Moreau is producing some of the most dynamic and striking wines of the area. Naming her estate after her grandmother, Marie Courtin, Dominique has set out to craft Champagnes which emphasise how her specific terroir can be expressed in a given vintage. Her wines then are single vineyard and single vintage, made with meticulously grown fruit from biodynamically-grown grapes, see no dosage, and sulfur is used sparingly or not at all.
Éfflorescence is 100% Pinot Noir that is fermented and aged in used barriques. Dominique chooses the vines from the lower part of this vineyard as she believes this results in greater power and aging potential. As with all her wines this does not receive any dosage at bottling.
Other Reviews....
The 2015 Marie Courtin Efflorescence is ample and resonant in feel. Plum, cherry, spice and ginger meld into a deep core of Pinot fruit that continues to flesh out with a bit of time and aeration. There's terrific depth, density and creaminess here, not to mention tons of sheer personality. No dosage. Disgorged: June, 2021. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Produced from 44% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, and the rest Meunier, the 2015 Champagne Grand Vintage Extra Brut pours a medium golden-straw hue and is opulent on opening with toasty aromas of baked bread, spiced orange peel, marzipan, and dried peach. Full-bodied, with a pillowy mouthfeel, it has a very nice balance of ripe fruit while retaining freshness Silky textured, its notes of citrus oils and orchard fruits last through the finish. This elegant and warming wine would do fantastically well moving into these cooler fall and winter months. Disgorged in February 2018 with five grams per liter dosage, Moët's 2012 Extra Brut Grand Vintage is showing well, unfurling in the glass with an expressive bouquet of ripe yellow orchard fruit, peaches, toasted nuts, warm bread and honeycomb. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a tangy but ripe core of fruit, nicely integrated acids and a pinpoint mousse, concluding with an attractively fruit-driven finish. Moët's 2006 Brut Grand Vintage is beautiful, finessed and expressive. Smoke, slate, apricot and pastry notes emerge as the wine gradually unfolds. Montaudon Classe M. Brut Champagne - Pre-Arrival OfferChampagne, FRANCE$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenClosure: CorkChampagne Montaudon is one of the most exciting and individual of Champagne Houses. The cellars are located in Reims, close to Reims Cathedral and are exported throughout Europe, USA, Japan, South Africa and now Australia. The Montaudon is still owned by the founding family, a rare thing in Champagne, which has become the home of Corporate Giants. In 1891 Auguste Louis Montaudon came to Champagne as a cellar manager. Some years later, his son Auguste Eugene, decided to create a Champagne House which danced its way to success in the 1920ís and was later to become the wine found in the top Caberet Clubs of Paris. It is said that in 1936, the mystical star of Revue Negre and Folies Bergeres, Josephine Baker signed a contract with Montaudon to supply her Caberet Clubs with first class Champagne. The rest, as they say, is history. Whilst the buildings which house the operations of Montaudon are historic, the wine making facilities are very modern, with a number of small stainless steel vats available to ferment and store the base wines until they are required for blending.
Nicks Wine Merchants / Vintage Direct have managed to secure the marketing and distribution rights for this outstanding Champagne for the Australian Market. The quality of Montaudon is exceptional as can be attested by the comparative tasting results conducted by Wine Spectator Magazine in the USA. From our own tastings the results have been very impressive, particularly so when one considers the price points compared with other much larger Champagne Houses. The ultimate expression of Champagne as perceived by the Montaudon Family, the "Class M" out-rated the 1996 Louis Roederer Cristal ($250.00) and the 1993 Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill ($100.00) in a recent Wine Spectator tasting. The wine is beautifully presented in 19th Century replica bottles. Again, as with all the Montaudon, the Champagne pours visually to perfection with creamy mousse and extremely fine and persistent bead. Superbly refined nose of cashews, biscuit, yeast lees and subdued creme caramel end note. The palate texture is exceptionally creamy, with a sense of refinement only ever found in the top cuvees of the best producers. There is a remarkable length and persistence of flavour here, with honeycomb , yeast lees and biscuit emerging. Superb length and balance with exceptionally long aftertaste.

Based in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, Sébastien farms eight hectares of vines spread across 60 separate plots. While much of the vineyard area is planted to Pinot Noir, there are additional small parcels planted to the remaining six varietals legally allowed in Champagne; Chardonnay, Arbane, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier and Petit Meslier. Aiming to bring further translation of site to his wines, Sébastien works with very low yields in his certified organic vineyards, with fermentation and élevage then completed in a mix of steel tanks and older 500L barrels. Sulphur additions are also kept to a minimum.
L’Exaltant is made 100% of Grand Cru Verzy Pinot Noir grapes, that received just a day of skin contact for a blush of colour before the juice was fortified with grape spirit. Furthering its uniqueness, Les Riceys is the only region in Champagne to boast three appellations. One of these is Champagne, of course, but there are also two non-sparkling wine appellations: Côteaux Champenois (red and white) and Rosé des Riceys.
The Sève is a Rosé de Saignée Champagne, from the warm, single vineyard site of en Barmont, where Pinot Noir can reach a robust ripeness. Four days of semi-carbonic maceration imparts both complexity and lightness. This joyful, deeply exuberant Champagne displays a beautiful copper pink color & unfurls in a cascade of ripe strawberries, rhubarb, and graham crackers.
- 2017 Pascal Agrapart EXP (Experience) Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne Grand CruChampagne, FRANCE$880. 00Bottle$10560.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Cork
Champagne Pascal Agrapart is one of the great grower producers, based at the heart of the Cote des Blancs in the grand cru village of Avize. Pascal has the reputation for being a grape grower first and Champagne producer second; a philosophy shared with his son Ambroise who is now in charge of production. Ambroise and the team works an astonishing 70-plus micro-plots in the Cote des Blancs, mostly in Avize, but also in Cramant, Oiry, Oger, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. All of these parcels are ploughed, and no chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides are ever used. Production is very small, with no more than 6,000 cases produced in any given year.
Formerly known as Experience, Agrapart's EXP is utterly unique in the world of Champagne. Given how difficult it is to produce, and the inherent rarity of such a cuvee, demand for EXP around the globe is enormous which is in part reflected in the price of this spectacular Champagne. In 2002, Agrapart sought and (remarkably) received permission from the local authorities to begin experimenting with a small quantity of wine that he wanted to produce without any sugar additions at all; no chaptalisation and no additions for the second fermentation and final dosage. Not using sugar and yeast for the liqueur de tirage (to prompt the second fermentation in the bottle) is actually against the AOC laws, which is why Agrapart needed permission. Instead of sugar, he uses must (grape juice) from the same vineyards that produce the wine, thus enabling him to produce a Champagne that is solely the product of estate-grown grapes.
This 2017 release is an equal blend from vineyards that also contributed to the Avizoise and Mineral cuvees (Les Robarts in Avize and Les Bionnes in Cramant), ‘dosed’ with around 20% of the juice of 2018 from these same vineyards. It was this juice that drove the secondary fermentation in the bottle. No sugar or yeast additions were used for either fermentation, and the wine was not fined or filtered.

The 2016 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Avizoise derives from lieux-dits Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux in Avize, two sites that are characterized by deeper clays than those in the parcels that inform Minéral. The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Avizoise Grand Cru stands out in this range for its breadth and power. Lemon peel, savory herbs, dried flowers, grapefruit and mint lend a bit of upper register and aromatic presence. Slight vegetal notes, a characteristic of any 2015s, lurk beneath, while texturally the Avizoise is on the lighter side. For those reasons, I would not push my luck on aging. 2013 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Extra Brut Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$1099. 00Bottle$13188.00 DozenClosure: CorkPhilipponnat's Clos des Goisses vineyard is one of the most famous in all of Champagne, and having been purchased by the Philipponnat family in 1935 it immediately became its crown jewel. The name is taken from the local dialect “Gois” meaning very steep, and the vineyard is the steepest, directly south-facing site in the whole of Champagne with a gradient between 30-45%. Pinot Noir dominates the cuvee with the typical blend two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay, granting Clos des Goisses with power, structure, and exceptional longevity. Other Reviews....
Surpassing even the 2012 and 2008, Philipponnat's 2013 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses looks to be the finest vintage of this cuvée in several decades, at least on first acquaintance. Deriving from only the six core parcels out of the 13 that make up the Clos des Goisses, it's a striking wine, evoking aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, clear honey, bee pollen, stone fruit and iodine. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated and tightly wound mid-palate that's girdled by racy acids and chalky structure, before concluding with a long, saline finish. Why is it quite so good? It would appear that 2013 was the perfect storm: an early-ripening terroir in a cool, late vintage; moderately yielding Burgundian selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that attained full maturity; and a willingness to make a strict selection have all come together to deliver a profound Clos des Goisses. Drink: 2025 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2013 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is fabulous. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is in no mood to show all its cards. The late harvest produced a bristling, intensely saline Clos des Goisses that will require years to be at its best. Even so, its depth, textural resonance and finish are so evocative as to what the future holds. The 2013 is a positively stunning Champagne and one of the best Goisses in recent memory. I can't wait to see how it develops. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Drink: 2031-2053.

Georgina Hindle - DecanterTasting this a year later alongside the new release of 2014, the 2013 Champagne Clos des Goisses Extra Brut seems to be coming into its own. Composed of 85% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, and pouring a rich straw/copper hue, it’s starting to show lovely, layered aromatics as it unfolds with scents of red berries, currant, toasted croissant, frangipane, and orgeat. Full-bodied, assertive, and long on the palate, it has driving, assertive energy with fantastic concentration and acidity. Though it has broad shoulders, it remains in check with itself and offers a long, fantastic finish. It has great structure and an angular feel, with notes of Meyer lemon preserves and orange rind, and delivers wonderful energy throughout. Disgorged in April 2021 with the usual 4.5 grams per liter dosage, Philipponnat's 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses offers up generous aromas of pear, pomelo and peach mingled with hints of honeycomb, macadamia nut and fresh bread. Full-bodied, broad and vinous, it's fleshy and textural, with a strikingly concentrated core of fruit, compelling mid-palate plenitude, bright acids and a pillowy pinpoint mousse. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2022)The 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is a Champagne of extraordinary elegance and finesse. Silky and aromatic, the 2012 impresses with its mid-weight, refined personality. Hints of kirsch, red plum, flowers and chamomile open gently in the glass. Clos des Goisses is often a rich, vinous Champagne, but the 2012 comes across as restrained and understated in all the right ways. Its aging potential will be measured in decades not years. Sadly, severe spring frost took with it a startling 50% of the crop. According to Charles Philipponnat Pinot fared better than Chardonnay. Ultimately, though, the Goisses blend is a typical two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Drink 2024 - 2047.

Open-knit and inviting, the 2008 Royale Réserve Brut Rosé is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Pinot Noir plays an important role in this distinctly vinous, rich Rosé. The soft contours and slightly forward aromatics suggest the 2008 is best enjoyed over the next handful of years. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2022)The 2014 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Montjolys shows just how compelling this vintage is. It offers a gorgeous mix of energy from this late-ripening year along with the natural radiance of this site. Lemon confit, white pepper, apricot, white flowers and chamomile are all finely delineated throughout. There is a bit of youthful austerity, though, so I would cellar the 2014 for at least a year or two. Drink 2024-2035.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2014 Champagne Cuvée Speciale Les Montjolys Brut is floral and has a hint of greenness, with notes of almond croissant, marzipan, lemon curd, and green melon. There is great tension on the palate, and it is more linear, as you might expect from the vintage. With a note of lime blossom, its florality continues through the finish and lingers. Drink 2024-2044.

Audrey Frick - jebdunnuck.comA sister to Les Chétillons, its vines just a little lower, with a little more clay over the chalk bedrock. Pale dreamy lemon, then an appealing attack of sourdough which, on warming, presumes upon notes of gingerbread; in the same vein the almonds defer to marzipan and the lemon pith is joined by nectarine and Mirabelle plum. Generous and precise at the same time; all that one should expect from a great wine from a great village (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger). Drink 2021 - 2028.

2014 Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$750. 00Bottle$9000.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Disgorged in July 2021, Péters's just-released 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is showing very well, unwinding in the glass with scents of ripe citrus fruits, crisp green and yellow orchard fruit, white flowers and subtle hints of freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, it's seamless and concentrated, its elegantly fleshy core of fruit underpinned by a racy spine of acidity and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse; it concludes with a long, mineral finish. Readers will have a lot of fun comparing the 2014 with the more tightly wound 2013 in a decade's time. Drink 2023 - 2043.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2022)The 2014 Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is fabulous. The 2014 is not as obvious as years like 2012 or 2013, but it presents a youthfully austere, classic personality that is absolutely beguiling. Readers will have to be patient here. There is certainly a lot to look forward to. The 2014 Les Chétillons is a Blanc de Blancs that sizzles with Mesnil tension and energy. Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2021. Drink 2024 - 2034.

Antonio Galloni - VinousA comparative tasting of neighbouring vineyards, Les Montjolys and Les Chétillons reminds one of the tortoise and the hare. Les Chétillons is incredibly reserved at first, but with a little air and a little time, spring flowers take boom, then hawthorns and acacia appear and even a hint of white pepper calls from behind the chalky foundations. The wine grows on the palate too, and what starts as austerity slowly but surely is transformed by the rigour of an innate and enviable complexity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030.
