Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2019 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee AlexandrineBurgundy, FRANCE$380. 00Bottle$4560.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkThe Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.
The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. The cuvée “Alexandrine” was created in 2005 to showcase Alexandrine’s talent. She selects the grapes over six of her favourite plots of vineyards. She is only taking the grapes that are “millerandées” meaning the grapes that are naturally smaller and concentrated. It requires a doubly long selection process and twice as many locations to create this cuvée with Grand Cru complexity, sans the Grand Cru price tag.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine derives, as usual, from vines within Roy's six favorite parcels that produce tiny, shot berries. Unwinding to reveal aromas of sweet berries, orange rind, peonies and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and perfumed, with ultra-fine tannins, lively acids and a deep, seamless profile. While it's approachable young in this charming vintage, it has more than enough substance to age. Drink 2021 - 2039.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)Discreet wood is presently on the compositionally similar if ever-so-slightly riper nose. There is again excellent intensity and delineation to the delicious and sappy middle weight flavors that are a bit denser though somewhat surprisingly given this wine's excellent track record, they are no more complex on the firm but not really austere finale. This too is a very good villages that should benefit from a few years of bottle aging. Drink 2026+

2022 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Fremiet Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$430. 00Bottle$5160.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, anise and plenty of spice nuances are trimmed in just enough oak to notice. The suave, palate coating and solidly concentrated flavors possess a richer and more generous mouthfeel where equally fine-grained tannins shape the less mineral-driven but slightly longer finish. In the context of what is typical, this is a relatively powerful Frémiets that is very much built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2034+.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundOffering up aromas of raspberries, plums, sweet spices and petals, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is medium to full-bodied, pure and lively, with refined, powdery tannins and a fine-boned, elegant profile.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has more depth and fruit concentration compared to the Clos des Angles. The nose displays a mélange of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and a touch of loam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, just a slight lactic note on the entry, segueing into a more marine-tinged latter half. A pinch of black pepper appears toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2026-2042.
93 points
Neal Martin - VinousAlthough the vines for this Fremiets are very close to those for the Clos des Angles bottling, the style is very different – it is much more mineral, almost salty, with bright black fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a texture with abundant tannic grip and an almost chewy feel. The domaine farms nearly 1.6 hectares on the steeper slopes with shallow soils. Although it is not as reserved as the Clos des Ducs, this would benefit from five years of age before opening. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterMid crimson purple. The vineyard is just above Clos des Angles, and bears some similarity on the nose. However, the fruit is a little deeper, and darker on the palate, good acidity here, just a little more structure all round. Drink from 2030-2037.

2022 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Champans Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$530. 00Bottle$6360.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding. Drink through 2034+.
93-95 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled squab, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly carnal finish.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. Drink 2028-2048.
94 points
Neal Martin - VinousThis monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink 2027 - 2055.
96 points
Charles Curtis MW - DecanterThe archetype of Volnay for Guillaume, and it prepares the way for Clos des Ducs. A clear bright purple. Today, the nose has a light reduction, but the fruit beneath is light on its feet yet with a fine tensile strength. This has a long backbone. An interesting, complex wine which one could easily pass over too quickly. Drink from 2031-2040.

2021 Domaine Meo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulees Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1699. 00Bottle$20388.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Here the expressive nose freely reveals its overtly exotic aromas of orange peel, jasmine tea, star anise, sandalwood and violet. The rich and impressively concentrated medium-bodied flavors are also blessed with an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract while displaying outstanding length on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. This beautifully balanced if compact effort should also amply reward longer-term cellaring. Drink through 2033+.
92-95 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe domaine's efforts to protect the 2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées were quite successful, so the yield this year is the same as in 2020. Bursting with notions of raspberries and plums mingled with orange zest, spices and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with powdery tannins, bright acids and a melting finish.
92-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is expressive and overtly floral on the nose…just how you want a Vosne to be. It discretely gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with quite structured red fruit, symmetrical, nothing powerful yet almost "athletic" on the finish. I suspect this will gain weight throughout its second winter. Drink 2025-2045.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousOne of the fuller red purple colours. A most engaging expansive deep cherry fruit. This is close to its magical best, with a volume of fruit which for me sits just right. Obviously less than in the recent rich vintages, but definitely enough! And an excellent fresh mineral note through the finish, not the burned stone style of the hot dry years. Drink from 2029-2036.
94-96 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis is ripe and smoky up front, with a black cherry and mulberry fruit aromas and mineral and earth notes. The texture of the wine is dense and firm but enlivened by the fresh acidity of the 2021 vintage that carries it to a marvelous, lingering finish. The grapes come from Méo’s 0.72-hectare parcel planted in the 1930s. The grapes are destemmed and fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (half new). This will show well sooner than the grand crus but should also have the substance to age for several decades. Wonderful wine. Drink 2030 - 2060.

2021 Domaine Meo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1070. 00Bottle$12840.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A restrained if really pretty nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its combination of cool earth, red berries and herbal tea hints. The medium weight flavors are not particularly dense, but they do possess both a really lovely texture as well as fine precision that carries over to the saline, youthfully austere and superbly long finish. Moreover, there is already first-rate depth and overall, this beauty is very promising. Drink through 2033+.
92-95 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is more structured, unwinding in the glass with aromas of smoky berries, sweet spices, plums and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with powdery tannins that assert themselves on the saline finish, it's one 2021 that will reward a bit of patience.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)A medium crimson purple in colour. The bouquet is attractive rather than massive. Lovely cherry fruit right through the middle then a firmer finish as the natural tannins of the Clos kick in. Proper length here as well. Drink from 2030-2038.
93-95 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis wine is surprisingly accessible, with a charming, bright pomegranate and ripe cherry fruit, and rose petal, pepper and mineral notes. The texture is silky and fresh – it lacks the imposing density of some years (like 2020), but it is beautiful nonetheless. Méo has 2.75 hectares, second only to Château de la Tour, and the parcels are very well placed in La Garenne (which he calls Pres du Château), Les Chioures, and Grand Maupertuis. The 2021 vintage is a blend of all of the parcels. Drink 2027 - 2055.

En Orveaux is a distinctive Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru nestled in a cooler, secluded area near the border with Flagey-Echezeaux. Incredible depth for a pinot that’s so expressive yet delicate. There is mineral depth to the aromas of red berries, dark fruit, bergamot, dried roses, stones, wet forest floor and sweet spices. Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
Fruit for this Monthelie Rouge has an average vine age of 40 years sourced from three different parcels, Les Plantes, Les Longenes, and Les Sous Court. Vinification includes a 5 hours cold maceration before fermentaiton in stainless steel, before being pressed to barrel for 18 months in oak, 20% of which are new.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

2019 Domaine Racines La Rinconada Vineyard Pinot NoirSanta Barbara, California, UNITED STATES$225. 00Bottle$2700.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkNeighboring the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, this plot consists of mostly deep, rocky soils. The original cuttings were brought down by Richard Sanford - a winemaking pioneer in the Santa Ynez area - down from Mt. Eden in Northern California in the '70s.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Pinot Noir La Rinconada Vineyard is a heady, dazzling wine. The 100% whole clusters lend striking aromatic top notes that soar out of the glass. Sweet red cherry, sage, rose petal, blood orange and lavender give this beguiling, layered Pinot tons of complexity. Savory, wild and constantly changing in the glass, the Rinconada has so much to offer. This brilliant, captivating Pinot from Racines has so much to offer. Drink: 2024-2039.

Other Reviews....
The 2019 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is a powerful, brooding wine. The high percentage of stems (75%) undoubtedly adds savory intensity, but it also masks some site character. The 2019 is a gorgeous wine, but it is also austere and not an especially typical expression of this site. I hope to have a chance to taste it in a decade. Drink: 2024-2039.

2021 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$490. 00Bottle$5880.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkThere's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices. That they are found in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a village with no grand cru sites, has allowed these wines to fly under the radar for many consumers. That said, these are some of the most accomplished wines of Burgundy, and best of all continually produce wines that seemingly ignore any challenges a vintage might throw their way to achieve results seen only at very few of the finest addresses across the Cote.
Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.
Les Vaucrains is located further up the slope from Les Saint-Georges and Les Cailles, and completes the trio of standout vineyards in Nuit-Saint-Georges. It's also the most powerful and concentrated wine in the range, and is shown after Les Saint-Georges when tasting at the Domaine. Chevillon's plot is on the lower portion of the vineyard, granting is some more depth of fruit than some other producers of Les Vaucrains.
Other Reviews....
A slightly more deeply pitched nose combines notes of spice, red and dark currant, plum and plenty of humus-inflected forest floor character. The sleek and almost painfully intense larger-bodied flavors possess exquisite detail as well as focused power that really builds as the solidly complex and lingering finish sits on the palate. As one would expect in the 2021 vintage, this doesn't have its usual volume, but the balance is impeccable. Highly recommended. Drink through 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains unwinds to reveal aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of baking chocolate, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's a powerful, structured wine that's broader-shouldered than the more suave, elegant Cailles and Les Saint-Georges, but which is also exceptionally characterful.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The deepest core in the purple colour and the sturdiest most upright bouquet. This is not about sensuality but there is a youthful majesty that is most appealing, a fresh finish, even a saline touch. Everything perfectly in place for a great bottle in the medium term, and maybe longer. Drink from 2029-2038.

Along with Les Vaucrains and the eponymous Les Saint-Georges vineyard, Les Cailles is one of the most highly regarded parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Bordering Les Saint-Georges, Les Cailles produces wines which often rival those of its neighbour, and while they may not display the outright power they are perhaps more refined here.
Other Reviews....
Classic ruby color. As is often the case chez Chevillon, this is the most elegant wine in the range with its spicy, ultra-fresh and restrained nose that mixes both red and dark pinot fruit, violet and sandalwood. The equally restrained, cool and intense middleweight flavors are notably finer with superb detail and ample minerality on the moderately austere, balanced and strikingly lengthy finish that is shaped by fine-grained tannins. This is at once stylish and very classy. Drink through 2033+.

The slope in Les Pruliers is moderate though steep towards the top of the vineyard. Despite the slope there is still a good proportion of gravel here, and can lead to wines with generous fruit weight and presence. Chevillon produces a deep and firm example of Les Pruliers that can often rival Les Vaucrains for the most powerful wine in the portfolio.
Other Reviews....
A darker fruit profile presents notes of plum, dark currant and plenty of earth and game wisps. There is both fine power and richness to the big-bodied if less refined flavors that display fine length on the robust and moderately rustic finale. This isn't as dense as it usually is but even so, there is no lack of size and weight. Patience again suggested as this is definitely built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundScents of red berries, dark chocolate, orange zest, sweet spices and loamy soil preface the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's built around sweet, powdery tannins, and which concludes with a mouthwatering finish. As a synonym for quarry, it's no surprise to hear Les Perrieres sits above a working limestone marble quarry. A mid-slope site, Perrieres produces a fine and aromatic Burgundy, deep in colour yet light and silky on the palate.
Other Reviews....
Elegant, pure and airy aromas are comprised by mostly red berries with background hints of crushed fennel, forest floor and anise. The intensely mineral-driven and strikingly well-delineated medium weight flavors possess a wonderful underlying tension that adds a real sense of lift to the moderately austere and beautifully long finish that is akin to having a small pebble in the mouth. Soils in Les Chaignots are more alluvial than in other areas of the village, with more chalk and gravel and very little clay. The site has a gentle slope with good drainage, and the vines here grow deep to access water and nutrients. Located at the northern end of Nuits, wines from Les Chaignots display intense floral aromatics with fruity nuances and great concentration.
Other Reviews....
As is usually the case, the expressive nose is quite spicy, indeed blind this could aromatically pass for a Vosne with its pretty plum, dark berry and exotic tea scents. Les Roncieres is a steep vineyard with poor, pale soils covered with white stones and gravelly shale. The early-ripening site produces wines which can show a slight wild edge to them, bramble fruit with a linear structure; quintessential Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Other Reviews....

Situated on the lower slopes at the northern end of Nuits village, Les Bousselots often produces softer and more approachable reds than is seen with the other premier cru Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyards. While the soil here is deep, Chevillon's plot contains old vines that retain good acidity and structure to support the richer flavours.
Other Reviews....
Here a more restrained nose is aromatically similar to the Chaignots if not quite as spicy. There is more power and punch to the intensely saline-suffused middleweight flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. Les Saint-Georges is the most lauded Premier Cru site in the commune, lending its name to the town of Nuits in the 1890's to become the full Nuits-Saint-Georges we know today. Otherwise, there is terrific energy to the mineral-driven and precise larger-scaled flavors that are at once sleek and powerful while exhibiting the usual youthful austerity on the gorgeously long, balanced and built-to-age finale. In a word, marvelous. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with warm spices, baking chocolate and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's gourmand and dramatic, with lively acids and ample reserves of powdery tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)Black purple, the bouquet is very backward, but more importantly not at all cooked. Now the concentrated deep raspberry fruit starts to emerge, red rather than on the blacker side. Very succulent, a grand lush wine that is reserved at the moment, but this should develop into a stunner and may yet move into five star territory.

2020 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Cailles Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$490. 00Bottle$5880.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkThere's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices.
Moderate wood sets off spicy and very ripe aromas of various dark berries that are not quite as fresh though they are nicely layered. The exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors possess fine intensity as well as good concentration, indeed the sappy dry extract buffers the equally firm and robust finale. The Chevillon Les Cailles is normally a wine of refinement and grace but the 2020 version is much more robust and powerful than usual. Drink through 2038+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)Rich dark purple, black fruit, a little bit heated, then a rich bright dark fruit on the palate with a slightly fresher finish. This may well make it through, and the fruit shows the class of this excellent vineyard. Judgement a little bit reserved for now, but there may well be a greater upside here.

A markedly sauvage-inflected nose is comprised by notes of newly turned earth, red and black currant and a whiff of underbrush. The intense and detailed big-bodied flavors exude a subtle salinity on the complex, serious and moderately austere finish that is shaped by palate coating tannins. I would recommend not touching a bottle of this for at least 10 years as it's very much built-to-age. Drink through 2038+.

A vague touch of wood is present on the ripe and exuberantly fresh aromas of poached plum, dark currant and anise. The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from 80-year old vines: 100% whole bunch with one-third new oak. This takes time to unfold on the nose when often this cuvée is quite medium. The aromatics say: Hold your horses. Then it unfurls to reveal slightly tertiary black fruit, tobacco and crushed limestone, almost flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Silky texture, poised acidity, this might be the most elegant and refined Bonnes-Mares that Nicolas Groffier has produced. I confess, I could not resist swallowing my tasting measure.
