2023 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Aux Chaumes

Sylvain Cathiard built a fearsome reputation through the 1990's and early 2000's for producing some of the greatest wines of Burgundy. His ability to marry fragrant and perfectly ripe grapes with expertly chosen new oak set the standard at the time. While the wines were more approachable than his peers, they also had the requisite components to age and evolve gloriously for many years. Now under the stewardship of his son Sebastien, the wines have gained even more acclaim and are equally as well built for an envious evolution in the cellar.

This is aromatically quite similar to the straight Hautes Côtes but with a violet top note. There is however a bit more volume to the vibrant and stony medium weight flavors that display noticeably more depth and persistence on the nicely balanced finale. This is an excellent Bourgogne. Drink through 2027+.

The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Aux Chaumes has a subtle, floral bouquet with impressive precision and poise. Its very pure red fruit seems to shimmer with energy. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip and slightly darker fruit than the regular Hautes-Côtes. More salinity comes through on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2026-2033.

Another colour on the paler side. Again, an attractive leafiness, this time perhaps a mini-reduction. There is a greater depth of fresh red fruit, raspberry and redcurrant, a little youthful bitterness, but greater fruit content in the length compared to the oak. Drink from 2026-2028.
